GravatarIt's meaningless. Popular vote nationwide doesn't determine the winner. State-by-state electoral votes do.

Look at the margin Bush holds in red states - 20 points or more in several places. That alone would skew a nationwide popular vote poll.

GravatarBizarre.
I'll take solace in the news I read that Kerry is well ahead in the swing states now.
I wonder if the red state he-men are backing Bush even more strongly now and that's skewing the polls?

GravatarWhat makes you think there is any legitimacy at all to these numbers? There are millions of freedom loving Americans out there that you know not of. We are the majority, We don't play games with the exploits of the sinewy and flaxen haired daughters of our leaders. Such a sin...to love Women. Yes, 'tis better than loving a Liberal Man.

That's why Our God will not punish her. But you Freaks of Flesh will be punished. God is resolute about that, God bless our God and condemn you haters to a nether world, where Liberals play and frolic and have pleasure. How disgusting.

GravatarAh, but the key is that Shrub is still at 48 percent. This appears to be his ceiling.

Not as good for us as 47, at which Shrub is surely toast, but still very playable for Kerry as long as he keeps beating the domestic issues drum to get swing state seniors to turn out for him.

GravatarI dont know any serious political pollster (those who work for candidates) who lets "likely voters" self-select. That's ebcasue almost no one says "I'm not voting." Realistic professional polls use voting data bases to determine whether someone is likely according to his or her voting record, which is public.

GravatarGOTV is the key.

And come November 2nd, there's gonna be a buttload of "unlikely" voters that show up to vote, and these polls aren't counting them.

It's gonna be beautiful.

GravatarWhy does Bush have as much support as he does?
Because of the general template of flipflop -- which Kerry and the mainstream media have studiously avoided. The first voter to ask a question in the Missouri town hall debate focused on the 'wishywashy' image as the main reason those of her friends who wouldn't vote for Kerry had.
As that spin has begun to weaken (its substance is bogus -- see Jonathan Chait in the 10/18 issue of the New Republic on the subject, but beware of the excuses he makes for the press avoiding the issue) the new spin based on Matt Bai's article with the much milked "nuisance" quote has come into play. The idea of Kerry as weak on terror is being pushed by the Bush camp and the mainstream media alike, given credence by the highbrow demagogy of Bai's distorted picture. Again, lack of refutation from the Kerry camp and the mainstream media.
I call the whole process "Dukakissing" -- a method to engineer a "mandate" for Bush's invasion of and occupation of Iraq, the whole agenda of the powers that pee in this "election". If all else fails, they just steal the election outright, already underway with its exposure protestated to the heavens.

That's what worries me, because Zogby gives the Chimperor a 4-point lead right now. Newsweek LV also gives Shrubby a 6-point lead. Hpefully, the WaPo tracking poll will have some better news.

GravatarThis election will be Kerry's because of two things:

newly registered voters
young voters

neither of which are included in these polls, either because they've never voted before, or because they're cell-phone-only (like me).

Do not let these numbers bother you.

GravatarI remember during the 2000 campaign, pollsters were already saying they were having trouble getting a sample because of answering machines and voice mail. At least then they admitted it.

How much worse must it be now, with cell phones and so many more people having caller id?

RE;

"Look at the margin Bush holds in red states - 20 points or more in several places. That alone would skew a nationwide popular vote poll."

I wonder if that is really so. Clearly, if you look at the distribution of poll advantage across the states, it is skewed towards red states having higher margins for Bush. But a lot of those states are little pissants, population-wise. Does anybody have figures that might re-construct the nationwide popular vote tallies from the current state-by-state data? All you would need to do to get a rough idea would be to multiply each candidate's percentage in a particular state by that state's number of electoral votes-2 (to discount the 2 extra that are not apportioned by population), add up all the numbers on each side, and divide by the total number of electors. I think, anyway. More rigourous would be to multiply each state's population by it's percentage for each candidate and add up all the people.
Maybe I'll give that a try.....

Gravatar Gore was down by about 3 points in each of them ('cept Zogby, which mostly nailed it) and he won.

Yes. Thank God for President Gore!

You know, I'm sick of hearing this "Gore won" bullshit. The electoral college vote was taken, Gore did not win, and Gore was not inaugurated.

Gore has not been President of the United States for the last four years.

This nonsense about winning the popular vote is a fiction we tell ourselves to make ourselves feel better about being losers. There is no popular vote; there is not even a constitutional requirement to have a popular vote.

We lost, not because we were robbed (although we were), but because the Constitution stacks the deck against us from the beginning. This isn't Republican vote fraud, it's constitutional law.

We lost, not because we were robbed, but because we ran an incompetent campaign that chose to emphasize contesting a state in Jeb Bush's pocket over contesting our candidate's home state. This isn't Republican vote fraud, it's bad Democratic strategy.

We lost because we failed to demonstrate that the opponent was a deceitful, hypocritical, incompetent, underachieving substance abuser prone to bribery and blackmail. These are all things that we knew in 1999. This isn't Republican vote fraud, it's failed Democratic media relations.

And, finally, we lost because we were robbed by the fucking Supreme Court. If we take this sitting down, we are fools. The next Democratic President should immediately double the size of the Court and fill it with liberals.

There are at least half a dozen ways in which we could have won the 2000 election. We failed at all of them, and telling ourselves that we "really won" doesn't change the disaster that occurred because we did.

There are at least half a dozen ways in which we could have won the 2000 election. We failed at all of them, and telling ourselves that we "really won" doesn't change the disaster that occurred because we did.

GravatarThe other thing that struck me is the fear that Bush is instilled in people can be skewing the polls. There can be a large number of people afraid to say their are against Bush but take solace in secret ballots. Secret ballots weren't invented to make it easier to count and verify but to protect regular folks from powerful bullies like George Bush.

GravatarA lot of fairly good news in the new Newsweek poll here:

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/6260.../site/newsweek/

Kerry has come up about 10 points since the last poll by Newsweek and since the debates.

Young voters, newly registered voters, and elderly voters prefer Kerry by a wide margin. That means getting out the vote is going to be very critical to the Democrats.

The debates helped Kerry...the details in this poll show that clearly.

(though I agree, you'd think the numbers would be even higher, wouldn't you??)

all in all, a heartening poll!

GravatarStill an uphill climb for Kerry. RealClearPolitics has the best national view of what's going on. Even with their math on "Leaning Bush/Leaning Kerry", JFK has GOT to win Ohio and had better win Iowa, or else he has to flip Wisconsin (what's the matter with those cheese-heads anyway).

Of course if Rove gets indicted by the grand jury, or we have a major Ramadan meltdown in Falluja or something else, the American people might really get to see the Emporer's new clothes and think twice.

Has anyone done any REAL statistics on on the influence of newly registered voters? I saw something about having about 6,000 or so net new Democrats in a state like Iowa. Is that enough to put in the blue?

GravatarWell at least it keeps the Democrats awake and we have a shitload of new Democrats registered to vote in this country. If the polls stay like this, they and all the other Democrats are going to turn up on November 2 and vote. If that happens, we win.

GravatarIf Rove were to be indicted by a Grand Jury, I swear to God, Bush would pardon him faster than it could hit the news. Probably happened yesterday.

I thought I heard on the radio that Hillary was heading to Oregon to campaign. I couldn't figure out why she would go there. I just heard now, that a "Riley Research Poll" came out with Bush leading 48 to 43. What in the world is going on? People must believe this poll or why are they panicing? On Oct 12 Kerry led an ARG poll there 49-44. On Oct 11 Kerry led in a Survey USA poll 53-44 and on Oct 5 Kerry led a Zogby poll in Oregon 54-43. I don't believe this Riley poll for a second. Bush is paying big money to buy himself some newsy polls. I think he believes that will buy him votes. This just can't be accurate.

GravatarTena, I sent it. I finished calling my list of voters today, and I'll say it again, the Kerry voters are fired up. They want Bush out, support Kerry, and are definitely going to be voting on November 2nd. They're so angry!!

I'm so happy.

GravatarWe lost, not because we were robbed (although we were), but because the Constitution stacks the deck against us from the beginning. This isn't Republican vote fraud, it's constitutional law...We lost, not because we were robbed, but because we ran an incompetent campaign that chose to emphasize contesting a state in Jeb Bush's pocket over contesting our candidate's home state. This isn't Republican vote fraud, it's bad Democratic strategy.

I'm sorry, that sentiment REALLY pisses me off. Tell that to the scores of voters who were unconstitutionally deprived of their right to vote; tell that to the myriad Representatives who were ignored when they pointed out the gross lawlessness of the last election. The GOP had no fucking right to fix an election, and I'm filled with rage each time I think of the callous manner in which they singlehandedly decided who should get to participate in a democratic election. Gore's (and the country's, for that matter) stunned disbelief at the flagrant shenanigans of the GOP was disheartening, but did not "lose" "us" the election. No one, of any political party, has the friggin right to disenfranchise voters and I for one will always rail against the party which chose to do so, and will not invert the situation by blaming Gore for the horrific acts of others. Shame on you.

Gravatar"...the Constitution stacks the deck against us from the beginning..."

ummmm, no.

The Supreme Court's decision in Bush v. Gore bypassed constitutional processes with the extraordinary ( and constitutionally nonexistent) reasoning that the uncertainty of a disputed election would be too damaging to this country. The Supreme Court stepped in when they should have bowed out and let the real constitutional process play itself out, likely ending with the constitutionally mandated process of the election being decided in the Senate.

That being said, the Democrats, and Al Gore specifically, did make mistakes in how they contested the election, and I don't think that those mistakes will be repeated. As they say: "Fool me once, shame..., shame on you, fool me...., uh...., uh...., Can't get fooled again!"

GravatarAnonymous, I think every state is important. We can't take anything for granted. Kerry and Edwards can't hit all 50 all the time, so it's good that other high-profile Dems are keeping the energy level up.

We must not take ANYTHING for granted.

Gravatar"I am voting my conscience" and not supporting Nader
In the following statement, Winona LaDuke, Nader's 2000 running mate, announced:
I am voting for John Kerry this November. I love this land, and I know that we need to make drastic changes in Washington if we are going to protect our land and our communities. I'm voting my conscience on Nov. 2 I'm voting for John Kerry. He wants to move federal policies to support Native communities, whether Native farmers, businesspeople or tribal governments. We are on his radar; this is a beginning. Kerry offers other reasons for hope. He opposes converting Yucca Mountain into a nuclear waste dump. By Nov. 2, 2004, John Kerry will have earned my vote.

GravatarI see no reason for optimism.
How can a country so fucked up by the Bushites show this much support for the mo-ron?
Even if Kerry can pull it off and the Repubs allow it to happen, (a big if), we still have a very fucked up country.
Someone give me reason not to be a whining defeatist leftist.
When will the big rev begin?

GravatarDid anyone else hear Jesse Jackson's

speech and Q&A
at the Commonwealth Club yesterday?

He sounds like he's already organizing a national call to arms should this dicey election get too close to call and the Cheney-Rove-Black-Baker-Scalia evildoer machinery kicks in again.

THAT should fire up the Democrats. Keep hope alive. Better yet, go out and vote so that those bald-faced liars won't have a chance to disqualify, un-recount, or otherwise shoplift America.

We are going to win this - now ain't the time to get all mopey, kids.

Now's the time to get seriously behind Kerry and work our asses off.

So this whole Bush movement is basically a cult. Not surprising; this country has always been a bastion of cult activity (Justice Thomas' wife was once in a cult). We should really begin to research strategies of busting up cults so that we might salvage that 25-30% of the population who are following and sacrificing their children to Bush.

GravatarRE: skewed advantages and popular vote

Well, I crunched the numbers.

Here's what I did:

I took 2004.k.com's latest state-by-state polling data, and made an Excel column of percent Bush, percent Kerry, and percent Neither for each state. I then put next to that column a column containing the population of each state from the Census Bureau's web site's latest estimates.
I then multiplied each percentage by the population of the state polled, to get an estimate of the number of Kerry or Bush or Neither voters represented by that percentage.

I then added up each column and divided the total by the reconstructed total US population, in order to get the calculated percentage of the whole popular vote for each candidate, based on state-by-state polling.

The answers are:

total Kerry voters: 134587450
total Chimpy voters:136---goddammit!

my Excel spreadsheet just crashed, taking all that work with it! Fuck!

...Well, I happen to remember the percentages, which were 46.2% Kerry, 46.8% Bush, and 7% Neither

That's pretty much dead even, BUT this 2004.k.com data gives Kerry 275 EV, Bush 252, and 11 tied. If the tied states go like 2000, then it's Kerry 282, Bush 256, with Bush still winning the popular vote by 0.6% !

So, the skewing is not enough to account for a 6% difference in the popular vote, but it is DEFINITELY working in our favor!

Apparently the secret Redneck Relocation program is working!

(oops! I shouldn't have said that...)

GravatarAs I've said many times, the reason Bush can't win unless he steals it is simple:

I don't know a single person who voted Gore in 2000 who is planning to vote Bush in 2004.

I know at least 5 people who voted Bush in 2000 who won't be voting Bush again this time. It doesn't matter whether vote for Kerry or for no one at all; what it means is that Bush is going to come in with fewer votes in 2004 than he had in 2000. GOP voter registration efforts won't change that, because the dirty little secret the SCLM won't share with you is that there was hardly anyone left in Bush's wackoreligio "base" who wasn't already registered, since the fundy churches have been registering any and all warm bodies who step through their doors for the past 10 years already.

The other reason he won't win, also anecdotal, is the reaction I get from people at stores, gas stations, etc. I've made it a habit to just say, "you're registered to vote, aren't you? be sure to go vote on election day because it's important." The responses I have been getting, at least 90% of the time, are emphatic - "YES I am registered and I WILL BE voting." Just a few days ago a young African American woman clerk responded by saying, "NOVEMBER 2!!! I WILL BE GOING TO VOTE!!!"

These are people who aren't being polled. They are fired up, and the media won't tell you about them, because, well...they're peons and the media exists to suck up to the rich and powerful.

I'm telling you, the look on the media whores' faces after the votes are counted is going to be almost as priceless as getting rid of the Chimperor.

We're going to win this thing, and any time you see a poll or hear something that leads you to despair, instead of posting about it here, get out there and talk to people. It may help turn out some more voters, but even if it doesn't, at the very least, it will cheer you up when you realize how divorced from reality the polls and media coverage really are.

GravatarForget the polls, they're all bullshit.

I think a whole new shit storm is about to come chimpy's way. They're just not measuring the new voters.

And if they try to still THIS election, well, we've got the pitchforks, lawyers, guns and money on standby.

So go suck on it chimpy.

GravatarI wish that the Kerry campaign would PLEASE get a TV advertisement on the air to debunk/respond to the Bush negative ads blasting him for supposedly supporting a gazillion tax increases. These Bush ads are on the air 24/7 in Ohio.

Kerry has NOTHING replying to this crap. As far I can tell, this is the first time in almost 30 years that the Democrats have not run ads specifically refuting a Republican attack ad, on a major issue like this.

Taxes are always a big deal in Ohio.
Kerry will definitely be hurt if he does not run TV ads against these GOP ads portraying him as the tax man.

If Kerry loses Ohio, it will be because he failed to answer this crap, ad for ad.

GravatarIf Kerry loses Ohio it will be because Bush sends out tons of mailings. I have received no mail from Kerry, inspite of the three uncommited voters in my family. The only mail we have received was addressed to my brother, who died ten years ago.

GravatarWhy are there NO ads from Kerry debunking/responding to the massive Bush ad campaign attacking Kerry as supporting a pile of tax increases?

These ads need to be refuted, since they are on TV practically 24/7 here in Ohio.

If Kerry loses in Ohio, it will be because he did not respond to these ads, which are obviously aimed at undecided voters.

Taxes are always a BIG issue in Ohio.

Kerry ignores these ads at his own risk.

This is the first time in 20 years that I have not seen the Democrats not respond to a strong negative ad campaign in Ohio.

I am really irritated about this. Somebody needs to tell the Kerry campaign!

I see they've got a new ad about the Bush failures regarding flu shots, but (I hate to be honest about this) the Bush ads on taxes are more effective.
KERRY NEEDS TO RESPOND TO THE BUSH TAX ATTACKS NOW!

GravatarThe picture I am getting here on the ground is nothing like the polls or the media indicate, I live in a red county in CA and we are seeing Kerry volunteers come out of the woodwork. We have outregistered the rethugs by 6-1. Do not allow yourselves to be discouraged use that energy to go out and register people to vote, we still have 2 days here. Make sure you encourage voting to everyone you speak with. It's not time to sit and whine, get off your duff and help Kerry get elected!

GravatarAlso, ads portraying Bush as out of touch are much more effective than ads defending Kerry's tax record. A good strategy here in Ohio is to highlight how Bush believes that the solution to job loss is a two year community college degree, and John Snow believes that job loss in Ohio is a myth.

Defending himself never got Kerry anywhere.

GravatarIf it's still essentially tied on Election Day, Kerry wins -- the undecideds invariably swing to the challenger, and Dem fist-time voters dwarf the Repub first-timers. Bush would have to be 7 or more points ahead on 11/2/04 to win...

GravatarIf I had to guess what is going on in the polls - it is that $$$ speak a lot louder than people.

Review:
$$$ own The Media
$$$ own The Executive Branch
$$$ own The Legislative Branch
$$$ own The Judicial Branch
$$$ own International trade
$$$ own the electronic voting systems
If $$$ own everything else, why on God's green earth would a lousy poll stand in Bush's way?

It is all in preparation for a landslide in Bush's favor come election day. The landslide won't come from the people, but that is the way the votes will be counted.

Conspiracy theory is just a conspiracy theory. But Begalia saw the debate bulge a "suit pucker" ...in three different suits!?!

Stranger things have happened.... Like us using depleted uranium in Iraq and thousands of cases of "gulf war syndrome" blamed on shots. The American media gave them a pass on this so that we could have a third act.

Go figure.

GravatarI know I'm being optimistic (can't help it), but I believe that the polls are missing huge numbers of people. The explosion of cell phones since 2000 distorts the sample. I know people, mostly young, that have no land line. The polls only call land lines. Am I right in recalling that a telephone poll in 1936 showed Alf Landon beating Roosevelt? Telephones were owned mostly by well-to-do Republicans in 1936.

GravatarI believe Kerry/Edwards will win the majority of votes and the electoral college, by a fair margin. Why? Because more poeple will vote this time. The Republican ground machine is well organized, and disciplined, probably better than the Democrats.

However, the mood pendulum has swung Kerry/Edward's way.

I sense that Republicans are still for Bush, but many now have lingering concerns about him; this is something new. The Democrats have a more positive view now - the debates showed clearly that the Kerry/Edwards ticket was more than acceptable as the next administration. The demonization of Kerry and Edwards has failed. Every viewer of the 4 debates could see that.

What does this mean? Simply this: on November 2 more Democrats will turn out on their own to vote than will Republicans. This should carry the major swing states (including Florida), with some surprises in store for Bush/Cheney.

The Time poll supports this - the narrowed gap on security issues bodes well for Kerry and is ominous for Bush.

GravatarEverybody get a hold of yourselves! The sky is not falling! So what, Kerry down by 2 lousy points?! Big deal! It's well within the margin of error and much better than being down 10-14 like a few weeks ago. Geez, everybody chill out. Kerry's well within striking distance and is doing awesome in the battleground states. Just everybody calm down and take a few deep breaths.

GravatarA couple of things:
1. Steve Rosenthal, the guru who runs ACT, said he wants Kerry to be DOWN 3 or so on election day, so that GOTV ppl are fully motivated. As he put it, he wants the quaterback to put them in range so they can kick the field goal to put them over the top.
2. Kerry has cut an ad with idiot John Snow's comment about job losses being a "myth" and are running it in OH. As a Kerry advisor said, "John Snow might have just costed Bush/Cheney Ohio."

SO CHILL YALL!!
