GravatarThe election won't be decided on November 2nd, because the number of provisional and absentee ballots cast will exceed the margin of votes between the candidates. The election will be decided in the weeks immediately following November 2, as those votes are counted and legal challenges are mounted. Plus there's Oregon, which votes entirely by mail. And then there's Colorado, where a constitutional showdown looms.

1996 will probably go down as the last election in American history to be decided on election day.

On November 3, we'll be donating to recount funds.

GravatarWe need to figure out:

1. How to make the politicians our bitches, so to speak.

2. Get their asses spanked for misbehaving in undemocratic ways.

3. Work for the greater good of the nation rather than their party or personal gain.

4. Find other jobs for lobbysists. Making coffee at Starbucks or something like that.

Basically, we need to create a democracy of the people, for the people, in this here the United States.

Gravatarpolitics will never be the same again. the internet and people like atrios and the deanies have started a revolution. newspapers and television will now have to share the spotlight with bloggers. you've all done an incredible job. no matter who wins nov. 2 ... the real winners are the folks like you and the American people. GravatarWell, I;'m out of work, Every week or so I manage to scrape up about $10 and send it off to Kerry. I really, really, really want to get Bush out.

But ... I'll bet most of my money -- maybe $150 in all -- has gone to TV stations. I hate TV. I hate TV ads, including most of Kerry's. I hate to think that at the bottom of this whole suckhole of campaign spending are the pockets of broadcast executives.

They win no matter who loses.

GravatarShould Kerry win, we need to keep reading the papers, magazines, and tabloids so we can laugh at the photographs of a George W. Bush that dumped Jesus and reintroduced himself to Jack Daniels.

GravatarWhat now indeed.

THe media will still be as deranged as ever,we will still have the radical right, and worse,if junior actually does give up power he will have made a marytr. We win but will we lose too?

America is at a crossroads and the path to self destruction is the easiest path to take. Will we travel the road to inescapable tragedy or the road to everlasting respectability?

GravatarIf there is a close Democratic win - like there was in 2000 - the rethugs will simply steal the election again. We need a Kerry landslide! And there's always the possibility that Junior will simply refuse to concede, and get the SCROTUS to nullify the election on some specious grounds. If that happens, will the US public meekly accept the end of democracy, or will there be blood in the streets? It's hard to know which scenario is worse.

GravatarWhat I am going to do, no matter what the result, is finally find time to hook up with Democracy for NH and take back the NH Democratic Party from the folks who have made a mockery of it for years. What have I been doing that I haven't had time? First, working for Howard Dean, then doing 99% of the organizing in my town for the NH Primary and the general election; plus, a full time job, Selectman, Selectman rep to the Planning Board, helping try to pass growth management ordinances so that my town isn't overrun with suburban sprawl, and trying to be an emotional support to my husband who just closed down a 19 year business.
Unless I move to Canada if Bush wins. But I can't, because I am guardian to my blind retarded brother who lives in a group home in MA, and if Bush wins I will probably end up having to take him home with me, which will mean the end of my job, no more health insurance (my husband and I are in our 60s), and no money. Ah, well, at least God will be in the White House.

GravatarOutrage fatigue. Too much deception. Too many lies. Too much to fight. Too many deceived fools in sad and uneducated opposition. We've all experienced it. This race is close. The swing states are narrowing down. Do something. We can sleep when we're dead. Fight fight fight. Get on the phone. Seek volunteer work. Do something. Leave it all on the field. Be utterly and completely exhausted and spent come November. Gird up and fight like your life depends on it.

GravatarI've given nearly $10,000 this season - though not through this site, though I am a daily reader. This is a shocking amount of money for me to have spent. I'd never given a dime before this year. I've also spent a good part of each week working for and with groups like MoveOn and ACT. I know I've done all that I, personally, could. And I'll continue giving the time right up until election. If it doesn't pay off the larger question for me is what to do with the sense of anger and disillusionment? I don't know how I'll deal with it.

As for what's next for you, I hope you keep up the good work. I cosign what samlex and Willem said. And agree that this won't be over on Nov. 3rd. Me thinks there will be much more work to do that will only begin on 11/3.

Peace.

GravatarI should say that with maybe one or two exceptions, all of my donations have been made via mail...but very much at the prompting of Atrios (and sometimes to candidates I wouldn't have known about, otherwise). I'm sure I'm not the only person who's done things this way, so the actual amount Eschaton raised is probably well above the "official" amount!

Also, bear in mind that legal challenges are going to cost a fortune. These people have to be shut down in the courts, and that takes $$$$$$$.

GravatarAnd, frankly, whether Bush or Kerry wins, nothing changes. Our job is to be an informed, intelligent and active electorate. Doesn't matter who wins, we gotta hold their feet to the fire and remind them ever so sweetly that they work for US, rather than the other way around.

Course, my reckoning tells me that will be a wee bit easier with Kerry in charge rather than Bush.

GravatarFirst of all let me repeat myself for the 1,000th time. There is more to this election than just the White House and Congress. There are state and local elections that mean so much! County commisions and state reps and govs and on and on. It's the local and state officials that have engaged in most of the voter supression efforts in Ohio and Fla. and those are Republican controled states. I spend most of my days, since I'm out of work and have NO MORE money to donate, hitting the phones, canvassing door to door and other stuff for local candidates. There is sooo much we all can do!

Go to a swing state and get out the vote. Gird up and fight the monsters. Remember everything they have done. Pick a disgusting visual and keep in in your mind. Focus. Gird up. Make a difference.

GravatarOT--David Horowitz is on Cspan giving a rant. He has accused everyone from Michael Moore to Senator Biden to being a fellow traveler. It's a pretty good speech - if you are Ann Coulter dreaming of Joe McCarthy. Otherwise it sounds like Father McCoughlin or.. well.. actually, Cheney.

If we wake up to regret on Nov. 3, what good is that $100 left in your pocket?

Give to DNC, Ginny, and Hoeffel!

GravatarHave faith. The news won't be bad. Unless you're a bush supporter.

What's next? Reform the media. Let's attack media consolidation. Jon Stewart's broadside on Crossfire yesterday was just the opening salvo.

Really, it's too important to our democracy- as long as the rethugs and the facists among us have a compliant and incompetent media, we'll never be safe.

GravatarI just gave another $100 to MoveOn.Org, and I'm volunteering with their NoVoterLeftBehind drive as a precinct leader (though in my precinct--not where I live, but where I canvass--it's pretty frustrating, cuz there's quite a high turn-over in rental dwellings' resodents...

GravatarMy gut feeling, if the Rovites win this one is that lots of people pouring sweat and money into this race could be discouraged to the point of just saying fuck it and dropping out. If we can't beat the machine after how they have totally fucked the country, it really becomes like Nazi-land in the 30's, they will have total power and not much to stop them. With the added stacking of the courts and more HOMELAND security and cameras probing everymove, the web shut down, cable teevee censored, even sat programming censored, how the fuck do you fight them.
Just being a negative fuck? YEA, I've seen how the contry has regresssed the last 23 years and its not pretty and the public has allowed it to happen.

GravatarHuh? Is the donation period over, or is there no longer any guarantee that the money you give will be spent? What's going on?

Somebody get back to me on this because I have a little bit of money that I'd like to spread between the DNC, DSCC, and DCCC. But I hope there is still time...

A very distressing article, that likens whats happening in the press and media to the nixon administration.

He makes a very scary pont,in that the L'affair de Plame is the governments way of killing of dissent from the media.Even tho those involved are republican supporters the end result justifies the persecution of some of the believers.J.Miller and the like are being investigated by the J.D. and there fore the media giant owners of these journalists are really the ones responsible for the reports. This is a covert mission of killing off the few major papers that disagree with the junior administration's way of doing business.

Seriously disturbing.

GravatarRemember when all politics was local? Well one of the things the Repubs have been able to do over the last 20 years is nationalize politics.

Last week we had local candidates forum here in my little town. The Repub candidate for COUNTY FREAKIN' CLERK got up there and talked about how he'll defend the right to bear arms and stop gay marriage! I swear, like a county clerk has any say or responsiblitly toward that.

I was watching the crowd and the Dems in the crowd were laughing at him and the Repubs were nodding and acting as if that's exactly what the county clerk should be doing.

We need to localize politics again.

GravatarTake back the media. Jon Stewart really hit on something when he challenged the bullshit of Carlson (and Begala). How can we leverage the power of the bloggers and the Internet to dilute the impact of 'mainstream' media? Or try to change them? O'Reilly's sex scandal may be just the trigger needed to slow Fox News. How do we keep applying pressure? How can we combat the Sinclair's of the world so that what we are facing now (the airing of an anti-Kerry film) can never happen again? (so far, boycotting advertisers is having no impact). I think there's much that can be done - regardless of who wins (or who is selected by the Supreme Court). This election season has been the most sickening I've ever experienced. Precious few "journalists" hold politicians accountable, so the average Joe is subjected to neverending spin - spin so retarded that Cheney can form the words, "the Duelfer report justified the Iraq war" and newspapers print it - knowing it is crap. I've had enough, and I would love to see bloggers harness their power to force the media to do their jobs.

Gravatarwe are nothing without party leadership and party institutions. obviously, grass-roots never had a chance to hang on. we saw lafollette, dean, wellstone, hightower, mlk and others sidelined, dismissed, rejected, eleminated or just plain losing.

the most urgent work is to create and/or join a lobby and get it legitimized within the party and move it to the left. we need to deploy propaganda of every kind to promote the virtuous circle within business, government, investment...

the problem is that i don't see how to get a mass lobby moving. I see the Dem wealthy elites, the academics, the laywers, doctors, scientists, businessmen, radicals with cachet (harvard, etc) even football coaches and tribal gambling with more clout than I do, tho I consider myself open-minded, highly educated, fair, and all that good stuff.

GravatarWe have much work ahead.

First, we'll have to beat back the vote fraud & court battles Bush will wage to steal this election, too.

Once Kerry is safely in the White House, the next project begins. Assuming we don't retake the House and Senate from the nutjobs, then we have to protect Kerry's flank against what's sure to be an endless swarm of congressional investigations, bogus legislation, and other garbage until Democrats and sane Republicans retake Congress in 2006.

On top of all that, we need to reform our free press and put it back to work serving & informing us instead of simply entertaining us.

This is a bipartisan effort to reclaim our political process from the wackos. The good, decent Republicans who just basically disagree with Democrats are still out there, but their party has been hijacked by a lunatic fringe who think they're on a mission from God. But the sane Republicans are going to retake control of their party, and together we're going to restore our nation.

The great work begins.

GravatarI was thinking about this the other day. The Conservatives got where they are because it wasn't about coming out for elections -- it was about fighting fo the Movement on a daily basis.

When we remove the quotes around "cause", we'll start catching up.

And ours really is a cause.

GravatarOkay, I feel like I had to share these two stories. I've been doing GOTV canvassing for MoveOn, and it's been really rewarding speaking to Kerry supporters. The best contact, so far, however, was one that wasn't on my list. As I was walking my dogs after one of the debates, I asked my doorman if he had watched it. He said that he hadn't, and volunteered that he didn't like Bush, but thought that Kerry was...yes, a flip-flopper. He's a big "tough guy" who owns a security company on the side. So, I went back upstairs and downloaded some Kerry plans about homeland security and the WOT, and took them back down for him. We talked until 2 a.m., and he came back the next week as a Kerry supporter. He said he thought about what we talked about, and saw some of Bush's negative ads which he said "made [him] sick."

My co-worker talked about the debates with his 92-year-old neighbor. She still holds a grudge against Hoover, since her husband lost his job under Hoover's administration when they were newlyweds. He's walking her to the polls on Election Day.

I guess what I'm saying is that money and organized canvassing is great, but even if you can't do that you can start a few conversations and add a few more votes on Election Day. Based on what I've heard so far, I like our chances.

Gravatarthe first step is to end broadcast networks and radio and get subsidized fibre-optic cable to every home. put it all on cable and have 1000's of choices.

Sounds good. In order to kill the teevee, the teevee has to be killed.

The Internet is going to make the Magic Picture Box obsolete.

The FCC just approved Internet-over-powerlines. Soon, hopefully even very poor and very rural people will be able to get onto the Internet.

Gravatar"goddam its so sorrowful. Two hundred plus years of democracy and we have to cajole people to go vote."

The numbers of people voting every 4 years has been going up. What we have to do is cajole Democrats to vote for the Democrat. If that had happened in 2000 we wouldn't be in this position today.

Gravatarmy feeling on it is canidates should get a ham sandwich and a soapbox. there is too much money in politics.

i'm voting, against my will at that. it's 'cause bush is a war criminal, though i have always admired kerry. i consider him a true patriot, then he became a politician, that's problematic, but rather have a patriot for president than a war criminal.

i sure hope he wins and pulls enough senators that we at least get that house back into sane hands.

GravatarSpread about $250 today to the last batch of Dean Dozen candidates. Makes for > $1200 for all the Dean Dozens this season (my little $10.44 shots are the real campaign finance reform)
Not to mention the several hundred I gave to Howie starting last November.

Coupla hundred to DNC, DSCC, and DCCC over the last few weeks.

Gonna hook up DFA2.0 and Lakoff's Rockridge to a monthly $25 from my Visa.

Gonna be in Albuquerque with all my siblings & their wives on Oct 28-Nov 3 to make sure NM is a deep, royal blue this time (we all live in CA).

Agree with upthread: Jon Stewart fired the first shot yesterday, and the slow but real caving of Sinclair is proof that we can do this.

I was depressed over the last few years, but Howard, Atrios, and Markos have given me incentive and tools to fight. I'll never be politically asleep again.

Gravatarread some things today that raise an extremely important issue, and that's whether or not there will be a draft. When you look at the landscape and you wonder what next big questions might face this country, might this realistically be one of them? And if it is, wouldn't it be wise for as to start asking it now rather than later?

GravatarThe election won't be decided on November 2nd, because . . . Plus there's Oregon, which votes entirely by mail.
Oregon's voting system does not delay election results. Although ballots can be returned by mail, they must be received by election day. A postmark is not enough. Last minute voters must drop off their ballots at designated locations before 8pm on election day.

GravatarOh wow! Spent all day at the Kerry booth at Clarendon Day and I am just flying. Tons of folks said they'd already voted for Kerry. Young voters and older voters totally energized. Several folks shared that they're going to various swing states to GOTV and work for election protection. Lots of folks told of donating hundreds this year. One guy really wanted to talk and said he's 43 and for the first time in his life he watched all three debates and is voting for Kerry because "George Bush just isn't all that smart and whoever gets elected will have lots of problems to deal with." Only one obnoxious pro life guy who wanted to argue and talk over me (always a mistake!) Never saw people so energized in my life. Hundreds of yard signs sold. Ran out of Kerry stickers. We can win this thing. GOTV!

GravatarGood Lord Atrios, what a depressing post. The " news" is not going to be bad on November 3rd.
How, at this crucial time, could you post that? Instead of being worried about your extra source of income
now and worried it won't continue, you should be motivating bloggers to action like heading out to battleground states to help Kerry/Edwards.
Don't get me wrong, you have done a lot for Kerry and the cause and I thank you...but now is not the time for you to go all soft on us.
I suggest after Kerry is elected President you probably will be the top reporter/blogger on the web.
You will no longer need your day job.

GravatarThe Conservatives got where they are because it wasn't about coming out for elections -- it was about fighting fo the Movement on a daily basis.

The majority of people who describe themselves as conservatives have been as screwed over as anyone else during this period of time. They’ve been manipulated into following because their leadership has convinced them that things would be even worse with Democrats in power. The power of the right is based on misdirected blame.

GravatarI'm taking a short break (for lunch) from GOTV in Phoenix.
I am amzed at how many people already voted Kerry.
Lots of folks young and old, middle-class and poor who are furious at the Chimperor.
Look for AZ to turn blue in '04.
It's exhausting work but thoroughly rejuvinating.
People are genuinely grateful to you for being out there walking.

Kerry in Landslide !!!

GravatarWhy does Bush get away with calling Kerry a "Mass. Liberal"? Isn't he the president of all the states. I would have loved to hear Kerry call him on that during the debate. Nothing like seeing the adolecent Bush with that "I just peed in my pants" look on his face.

GravatarThe fight will not be over on November 3 whatever the outcome. The neocons and fundies and other hangers-on will still be here and they will still have more money than we do. But we are going to win this.

My suggestions for the future:
1. We need to rebuild local movements on local levels. This means being involved in politics on a daily basis for at least some of us.
2. We need to take the media away from the Murdochs of this world and make it unbiased or at least mutually biased. Fairness doctrine must be re-introduced and we should seriously consider buying a major tv channel (if there's money).
3. We need to put serious investments into building think tanks and/or groups that can go and respond and talk in the media easily. This is needed in the longer term for guaranteeing that our opinions see the light of the day.
4. We need to goad the Democratic Party to keep them honest and assertive and to make them fight the extremist fringe of the wingnuts.

Yup. One reason I never vote for goopers for anything is that even the lowliest local offices are the training grounds for the gop fascists of tomorrow. I've seen too many goopers that I thought were decent local pols head off to the statehouse or Congress only to become DeLay toadies or have their minds twisted by the party apparatus.

F that. No goopers for me under any circumstances, ever.

GravatarIf you want to contribute to Kerry, may I suggest you contribute to his GELAC Fund? This is the money that will help pay for the post-election battle against the brownshirts when they try to steal the election for Bush.

And if you think they don't have detailed, step-by-step plans already in place to do just that, you haven't been paying attention.

The fight won't be over November 2. It will have just begun.

GravatarOn the one hand congratulations for doing your bit. On the other, it seems to me the chances for a fair election are fairly small:
http://www.votersunite.org/info/ ...iousmessups.asp

If this election is totally fixed, as seemes likely using voting machines, it is the beginning of the end for the democracy known as the USA. The signs of this end have been coming for while and include a sharp turn towards a banana republic with the imprisonment of people without due process and torture.

GravatarHecate, you live in Clarendon? I'm in Falls Church (greater, not "city of").

I feel optimistic -- Virginia may go red, as always, but if this many VIRGINIANS are displaying Kerry signs, bumper stickers, pins, etc., I think we can be optimistic about other parts of the country! As someone whose votes LOSE 99% of the time in this state, I am very excited by what I see these days.

BTW I have my "Support our Troops" magnet under my Kerry sticker, which is in the back window of my wagon. Sorry it's not a Volvo

GravatarI've given a whole heck of a lot more money this year than ever before (not through your site), but I know it isn't enough, so I recently signed up as a Precinct Leader with the MoveOn PAC people to get out the vote. I live in Ohio, and I have hope that unless the election is completely stolen, the people we get to the polls will make a difference.

It is time to focus everything on getting out the vote. We can worry about what to do after November 2nd... after November 2nd. Right now, let's work to make it a resounding victory for John Kerry, and at least make it a lot harder for Bush to steal. He may refuse to leave power, but lets at least make it clear what he is doing so he has no shred of legitimacy left if he does try anything.

GravatarFor those of you stuck with a prolifer in your face, ask them what I do.
Ask them about the innocent children who have died in Iraq, through absolutely no fault of their own.
Usually the response you will get is something along the lines of "Well, better to fight them there so our children don't have to die."
I politely point out to them that their answer highlights the gray in the Iraq war. No one wants the children to die but it is the lesser of two evils.
this shows that they realize that not all issues can be treated as black and white.
The same is true with abortion. No one wants to have one, but it is the lesser of two evils.
No laws have ever stopped abortions.
Since Bush has declared no one should be able to dictate your nation, the same argument applies on the microscale to American women.
I don't know if it convinces them, but it sure shuts them up.

GravatarFire Michael Powells's ass.

Fire the Chair of the FEC and reorganize it iwth some fucking teeth.

Indict anyone involved in voter fraud on treason charges. Fuckers can think twice next time.

Go after the media. Start by reinstating limited ownership regulations. Then start going after broadcast licenses.

Remind every on of them that the airwaves do not belong to them. They belong to the people. And either they can get on board with their responsibility to the public, or they can get run over. And frankly, I don't care which.

GravatarI'm spending the weeek before and day of the election working in Ohio doing whatever they'll have me do. Bought my plane tickets from California already. I figure when we're looking back on this years later whatever the outcome I can honesty say I tried to put a stop to the fascist movement. Kind of like, "What did you do in the war, daddy?"

It's costing me a week of vacation time from work and the plane trip and expenses but I know I'm going to feel good about myself come Nov 3rd.

I'm working on getting my high school age daughters to do some volunteer work in Ca. for Democratic candidates. They'll thank me for that years from now.

GravatarI have room for ONE volunteer to crash for the last week on the couch in the livingroom, if somebody is coming to albuquerque to rock the vote, as it were (and can handle a passel of dogs)...email me, we'll talk

GravatarIf the news is "Bad" I'm out of here. I'm unemployed due to outsourcing to Manila - worked at a large travel e-commerce "dot com" located in Seattle, and my entire team was let go (150 years of combined industry experience.) But they don't have to pay for health insurance - and don't care about the inferior service.

At least being unemployed has given me time to volunteer for the Kerry campaign, so I can say I did all I could if I find myself migrating to Buenos Aires in 2005.

GravatarI have come to the realization that no matter what happpens on November 2, the horror has only just begun. If Kerry wins, the right wing will do everything in their power to nullify the election. If they can't nullify it in the courts, and if they don't do something worse (martial law?), then they will retreat to their patriot hideouts and oil their guns for the coming revolution. (That's always been why they fought gun control, didn't you know?) Bush winning the election may be the best, because life as we knew it will end quickly and bloodlessly.

GravatarAny advice for a first-time canvasser?I'm going door-to-door to contact undecideds for our county Dem. organization, to see if they've made any decisions about who they'll be voting for. I'm trying to get as few doors slammed in my face as possible. Any words from the wise?

GravatarCount me as another guy donating time instead of money. For my part, it's Las Vegas for a week plus. Voting has already begun. Lowly Nevada is vital, which is scary as fuck considering its ridiculously crude brand of political corruption. (Which I can speak to, having grown up there.)

I'm stunned at how many Californians are doing like me and getting out to other locales. Hundreds per weekend just to LV. But please, don't forget to get your absentee ballots in, y'all.

GravatarProgressives need an ideas infrastructure as powerful as the one on the right, so I'd say that after the election it would be worthwhile to start sending money to the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities and similar organizations.

GravatarThe election, which we will win if people get to the polls and we make sure the votes get counted, will be only a first step. From election day to Inauguration Day we will need to be extra extra vigilant, because the apparatus of the state will still be in the hands of the sick radical Bush Junior team, and they are Leninist in their ends-justify-the-mean approach.

That period will be very very dangerous. From administrative regulations to sweetheart last-minute contracts to judicial appointments to the possibility of black ops, we will need to stay mobilized and ready to respond rapidly in the ways we have been.

I know a lot of people here are very suspicious of Kerry and feel he will need to be hammered on, but I urge you to remember that Bush Junior and his team are America's real enemy, and until they no longer have their hands on the wheel officially, they are dangerous.

Tuesday night -- party like it's 2004. Wednesday afternoon - be loaded for bear.

GravatarProud to say I've already voted for Kerry.

I look forward to the day that I can complain about Kerry and what he's doing as president. Ah, deep sigh of relief.
