I've given nearly $10,000 this season - though not through this site, though I am a daily reader. This is a shocking amount of money for me to have spent. I'd never given a dime before this year. I've also spent a good part of each week working for and with groups like MoveOn and ACT. I know I've done all that I, personally, could. And I'll continue giving the time right up until election. If it doesn't pay off the larger question for me is what to do with the sense of anger and disillusionment? I don't know how I'll deal with it.

It's the local and state officials that have engaged in most of the voter supression efforts in Ohio and Fla. and those are Republican controled states. I spend most of my days, since I'm out of work and have NO MORE money to donate, hitting the phones, canvassing door to door and other stuff for local candidates. There is sooo much we all can do!

My gut feeling, if the Rovites win this one is that lots of people pouring sweat and money into this race could be discouraged to the point of just saying fuck it and dropping out. Remember when all politics was local? Well one of the things the Repubs have been able to do over the last 20 years is nationalize politics.
Last week we had local candidates forum here in my little town. The Repub candidate for COUNTY FREAKIN' CLERK got up there and talked about how he'll defend the right to bear arms and stop gay marriage! I swear, like a county clerk has any say or responsiblitly toward that.
I was watching the crowd and the Dems in the crowd were laughing at him and the Repubs were nodding and acting as if that's exactly what the county clerk should be doing.
We need to localize politics again.

we are nothing without party leadership and party institutions. obviously, grass-roots never had a chance to hang on. we saw lafollette, dean, wellstone, hightower, mlk and others sidelined, dismissed, rejected, eleminated or just plain losing.
the most urgent work is to create and/or join a lobby and get it legitimized within the party and move it to the left. we need to deploy propaganda of every kind to promote the virtuous circle within business, government, investment...
the problem is that i don't see how to get a mass lobby moving. The best contact, so far, however, was one that wasn't on my list. As I was walking my dogs after one of the debates, I asked my doorman if he had watched it. He said that he hadn't, and volunteered that he didn't like Bush, but thought that Kerry was...yes, a flip-flopper. He's a big "tough guy" who owns a security company on the side. So, I went back upstairs and downloaded some Kerry plans about homeland security and the WOT, and took them back down for him. We talked until 2 a.m., and he came back the next week as a Kerry supporter. He said he thought about what we talked about, and saw some of Bush's negative ads which he said "made [him] sick."
My co-worker talked about the debates with his 92-year-old neighbor. She still holds a grudge against Hoover, since her husband lost his job under Hoover's administration when they were newlyweds. He's walking her to the polls on Election Day.
I guess what I'm saying is that money and organized canvassing is great, but even if you can't do that you can start a few conversations and add a few more votes on Election Day. Based on what I've heard so far, I like our chances.

My co-worker talked about the debates with his 92-year-old neighbor. She still holds a grudge against Hoover, since her husband lost his job under Hoover's administration when they were newlyweds. He's walking her to the polls on Election Day.
I guess what I'm saying is that money and organized canvassing is great, but even if you can't do that you can start a few conversations and add a few more votes on Election Day. Based on what I've heard so far, I like our chances.

The numbers of people voting every 4 years has been going up. What we have to do is cajole Democrats to vote for the Democrat. If that had happened in 2000 we wouldn't be in this position today.

my feeling on it is canidates should get a ham sandwich and a soapbox. there is too much money in politics.
i'm voting, against my will at that. it's 'cause bush is a war criminal, though i have always admired kerry. i consider him a true patriot, then he became a politician, that's problematic, but rather have a patriot for president than a war criminal.
i sure hope he wins and pulls enough senators that we at least get that house back into sane hands.

The election won't be decided on November 2nd, because . . . Plus there's Oregon, which votes entirely by mail.
Oregon's voting system does not delay election results. Although ballots can be returned by mail, they must be received by election day. A postmark is not enough. Last minute voters must drop off their ballots at designated locations before 8pm on election day.

Oh wow! Spent all day at the Kerry booth at Clarendon Day and I am just flying. Tons of folks said they'd already voted for Kerry. Young voters and older voters totally energized. Several folks shared that they're going to various swing states to GOTV and work for election protection. Lots of folks told of donating hundreds this year. One guy really wanted to talk and said he's 43 and for the first time in his life he watched all three debates and is voting for Kerry because "George Bush just isn't all that smart and whoever gets elected will have lots of problems to deal with." Only one obnoxious pro life guy who wanted to argue and talk over me (always a mistake!) Never saw people so energized in my life. Hundreds of yard signs sold. Ran out of Kerry stickers. We can win this thing. GOTV!

1. We need to rebuild local movements on local levels. This means being involved in politics on a daily basis for at least some of us.
2. We need to take the media away from the Murdochs of this world and make it unbiased or at least mutually biased. Fairness doctrine must be re-introduced and we should seriously consider buying a major tv channel (if there's money).
3. We need to put serious investments into building think tanks and/or groups that can go and respond and talk in the media easily. This is needed in the longer term for guaranteeing that our opinions see the light of the day.
4. We need to goad the Democratic Party to keep them honest and assertive and to make them fight the extremist fringe of the wingnuts.

I live in Ohio, and I have hope that unless the election is completely stolen, the people we get to the polls will make a difference.

Count me as another guy donating time instead of money. For my part, it's Las Vegas for a week plus. Voting has already begun. Lowly Nevada is vital, which is scary as fuck considering its ridiculously crude brand of political corruption. (Which I can speak to, having grown up there.)

Progressives need an ideas infrastructure as powerful as the one on the right, so I'd say that after the election it would be worthwhile to start sending money to the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities and similar organizations.
