Have any military leaders called Bush on the draft issue? It seems rather strange that no one has looked at the fact that because of our commitments in Afghanistan and Iraq the U.S. military cannot offer any type of military assistance to the Sudanese refugees. If the U.S. continues to lose soldiers at the rate it did in September, there will be a draft.

The marine corp usually takes only volunteers. But there is still the navy, airforce, etc. It's an interesting way that would allow GWB to get away with a lie -- not that he has ever done that.

Although the DoD claims that it has consistently filled slots on the board and that this does not indicate that plans for a draft are imminent, its own website shows a marked increase in the slots to be filled as well as a campaign to increase the percentage of the population registered with the SS.

OVER-PLAYING THE HAND [Andy McCarthy]
Just read yeasterday's WSJ editorial and heard some talk-radio railing about the same thing earlier today -- the purported "outing" of the Veep's daughter. I hate to say this, but I think this is really dumb. What Kerry did was utterly obnoxious, transparently pre-meditated, and worthy of being talked about at length. It goes to his judgment and character. In a close election, it could even be a decisive gaffe. But what he decidedly did not do is "out" Mary Cheney, and some of our folks are going way overboard by saying otherwise.

That term has a very specific, very extortionate meaning -- revealing the gay sexual preference of someone who has kept it publicly unknown, usually to try to intimidate the person (and others who also prefer to keep the matter private) into vocal support for the gay socio-political agenda. Ms. Cheney was already "out" -- that's the reason Kerry knew about it.

Strategically, it is counter-productive to claim otherwise. First, it must make gay people and the media think we are clueless -- as if we just yelled "touchdown" after a home run. If you're gonna speak with indignation convincingly -- and there's plenty of good reason to be indignant about what Kerry did -- it's important to sound like you know what the hell you are talking about.

More importantly, calling it an "outing" has the potential to make Kerry seem sympathetic -- because the focus becomes whether he is being falsely accused rather than his nakedly calculated crassness. It runs the risk, with the media's certain help to the Kerry campaign, of changing the subject to "who first revealed her sexual preference" instead of "how could someone who wants to be president behave that way." Indeed, I think this is already happening.

Sometimes I think we don't have enough feet to shoot ourselves in.

The draft will not begin on November 3. After Bush loses in both the electoral and popular votes, and sees all his court challenges being thrown out, and his hopes of a second term dwindling rapidly, he will declare martial law. The delay due to the election court challenges should bring this on around mid-December. Then he will reinstate the draft.

People can volunteer to be a draft board member, local draft boards decide which young men in each community receive deferments, postponements, or exemptions from military service based on federal guidelines.

i know nothing about statistics, except that done correctly they give a reasonably accurate reflection of the group polled. this year i'm reasonably certain they are going to be wildly off the mark. why?

i have called all my stoned slacker freinds, guys like me, who have never voted, i wanted to urge them to register and vote. to a person they all proclaimed, i'm registered and i'm voting. none of them particulary like kerry, but don't misunderestimate the power of bush hatred. some of them have draft age kids too. that's a very real factor.
my feeling is depending how it goes that could happen even if kerry gets elected, but it would certainly be less likely.

Save it anywhere, it doesn't seem to make
a difference which folder. I just saved it
to my desktop.

Alas, the fix doesn't work for all of us, for some reason. Other people have gotten it to work in Firefox 1.0 Preview, but it will not work in mine. I spent most of last night working with a lovely anonymous gal on the Mozilla boards who spent hours trying to help me with it -- nothing worked, not even a piece of javascript she came up with. It isn't the browser, because she got it to work on her Firefox PR1.

I can kinda work around it by opening Eschaton in Firefox, and if a thread's broken, pulling up H'scan in IE, where I can implement the fix. It's awkward but at least it's readable.

But I would respectfully request that people not get in the habit of posting long URLs. I'm not gonna bitch about it anymore, though, 'cuz it's not a problem for most folks anymore -- thanks to Millionth Monkey and that brilliant fix. (Oh, apparently those of you, and me at work, stuck with Mac OS9 or earlier plus IE5 for Mac cannot use the fix, and Chris Tucker mentioned it didn't work in iCab.)

(BTW, you can also change the "dashed red" to "solid gray" in the code, and the border's considerably more stylish.)

Most of those of us who have volunteered to become members of our local Selective Service Boards did so a year ago when the issue first arose and we realised that it was more realistic to be in the system than outside it.

Why should we realistically be concerned about a draft if Bush is re-elected?

Because if he wins THIS time, he and his right-wing machine will, without a doubt, declare that victory as a total vindication of his foreign policy, and a unquestionable mandate to do the same. Our media, as ever, cowed by his victory, will trumpet this as the correct interpretation. How can they oppose in any way the voice of the people.

And what is Bush's foreign policy? To attack convenient targets throughout the world in pursuit of "democracy", or against any whiff of a threat, real or imagined. Is it even conceivable that in the next four years, no such opportunity will raise its head?

And when this invasion takes place, Bush will suddenly find out -- what a surprise -- that he needs even more troops to "keep us safe." And then he'll explain to the American people that, well, he needs a draft a few kids to do their patriotic duty, despite his promise.

The point here is that Bush will NOT need an ACTUAL terrorist episode, or an AUTHENTIC threat, to occur to engage in another war. He will feel fully entitled to do so in virtue of his election itself.

I suspect you're being ironic, but in fact, this isn't true. Most of those people long ago lost their stateside jobs because they've been gone too long. It provided an easy way for many of their employers to reduce their head count without declaring an actual layoff. They would not have been rehired anyway, or in far more cases (13,000 or so) they are so badly and permanently injured when they return that they couldn't resume their jobs anyway.

Good news, though! They can't look for a job, so they aren't counted as unemployed, so the unemployment rate won't go up! Whoo-hoo! U-S-of-fuckin'-A!

Well, I saw different results today, bigvic, but remember one thing: even a "narrow" victory will be a LOSS.

A "narrow" victory can... and will... be STOLEN. If the results were, say 54 Kerry - 43 Bush, it would be nearly impossible to stop the clock and steal it again. The only recourse they would have left would be to drag every state closer than 60-40 into court, claiming "irregularities"... which they would still absolutely do.

And I'd take that! Because at least that way, if it were to drag on indefinitely and they were to, say, nullify any states' results based on "irregularities"... and THEN they stopped the clock!.. the country simply would not tolerate it, and all bets on the social contract would be off.

Which, in turn, would generate the level of outrage it would finally take for the peasants to rise up, and string 'em all up. In a manner of speaking, of course.

Tinfoil, perhaps, but these people (and you listen to me good!) DO NOT DO DEFEAT. They are RADICALS; they do not accept our Constitutional system as sacred (see also Paul Krugman's "The Great Unraveling"). Anything short of an overwhelming victory for our side = de facto defeat.

Here's the thing. We will always have anecdotal stories to encourage us. The lifelong Rethug you know who suddenly can't stand Bush; the lawn signs; "not one person I know is voting for Bush", etc.

But polls, say what you want about them, are indeed scientific. You know, "science", as opposed to "creationism" (got your attention, now?).

And while you can have a skew of up to maybe 7 or 8 points between certain polls, what does it say about a methodology that can look at a nation of a few hundred million people, and get it that close?

I've heard people grouse about broadcast ratings for years, as well: "Nobody I know watches 'Fear Factor' or 'The Apprentice'!" I can honestly say that's true, in my case. But those who have no respect or understanding of research and polling are like the old song by Bill Cosby, about "The Little Ole Man". He just sat there and got run over by a train. Why? "'Cause I cannot believe... that it's HAPPENING!"

I submit to you that people who "don't believe in polls" (ohh, give me a buck for everyone you know who has said that, and I'm off to Tahiti!) are as faith-based as W. They simply, well, er, just CAN'T believe that research could possibly have any validity! Because I personally don't comprehend how it could possibly work!

That's why when reading these posts, I skip all the feelgood shit about lawn signs. I'm glad it pumps up the troops, I really am! But please... just give me a 10-point lead in three lousy polls until Election Day, and I'll be the most optimistic mofo you've ever met.

IF we need a draft in order just to keep things at status quo in Iraq and Afghanistan, how will President Kerry avoid it? In his speeches he says he will get 40,000 more people in the Army, but how? I'm not trying to bring anyone down or start a fight, I'm just wondering...I'm actually starting to think a draft wouldn't be horrible--at least people would be forced to pay attention to the news.

Unfortunately, the downside of a volunteer military is that it selects for those who just love taking orders; it is not a cross-section of the population.

i live near a major University with an ROTC chapter. One of them has a bumper sticker on his truck that says "VIVA BUSH."
