Have any military leaders called Bush on the draft issue? It seems rather strange that no one has looked at the fact that because of our commitments in Afghanistan and Iraq the U.S. military cannot offer any type of military assistance to the Sudanese refugees. If the U.S. continues to lose soldiers at the rate it did in September, there will be a draft.

Mary's Silence On Lesbian Squabble
(Washington) 365Gay.com has learned that the GOP outrage over Democratic presidential candidate John Kerry's remarks about Mary Cheney may have been orchestrated by Mary herself.
Sources close to the Bush-Cheney campaign tell 365Gay.com that the idea came up in a telephone call between Mary and her parents immediately after the presidential debate Wednesday night.
The younger Cheney, who serves as a backroom advisor to her father, suggested that she would continue to be a "issue" for Democrats unless something was done to stop it immediately.

That boob lies so much that hearing him tell the truth for once, even in error, is a tremendous relief.
The article notes that the crowd fell silent after chimpy's blunder. It would be nice if they used that split-second to wonder "why am I voting for this idiot?"
Yeah, I know - the cult of Bushbanality doesn't permit such moments.

Republicans accused Kerry of fear mongering, saying that he had opposed legislation that would have made it easier to produce vaccines.
You know, when Jesus of Nazareth said "Remove the log from your eye first, rather than the splinter from your brother's eye," this is what he meant.
What you see in your brother's eye is really a reflection of what you, yourself, are carrying.
Now the GOP accuses Kerry of fear-mongering?
And they said irony was dead....

Fears of a terrorist attack are not sufficient reason for authorities to search people at a protest, a federal appeals court has ruled, saying September 11, 2001, "cannot be the day liberty perished."
Civil liberties, my little bitches . . .
"We cannot simply suspend or restrict civil liberties until the War of Terror is over, because the War on Terror is unlikely ever to be truly over," Judge Gerald Tjoflat wrote for the three-member court. "September 11, 2001, already a day of immeasurable tragedy, cannot be the day liberty perished in this country."
"In the absence of some reason to believe that international terrorists would target or infiltrate this protest, there is no basis for using September 11 as an excuse for searching the protesters," the court said.

Is the Mary Cheney issue really doing any damage to Kerry? Is it even a distraction? It may be in the news, but I do not get the sense that anyone cares. But then I'm in Portland, Oregon!
It strikes me that Bush having to continually deny that a draft is on the way is far more significant.
Kerry can ignore the Cheneys. Clearly Bush cannot ignore Kerry's draft suggestions.

Check out Hackworth.com. Most of you know who David Hackworth is, but for those of you who don't, he's an old, hard-ass military type, and very respected. He's been an outspoken critic of the Iraq War, and has an excellent article on his site about the draft. His exact words regarding a potential draft: "Bet on it."
Check out the "articles" section of the site for several dozen damning screeds against Rumsfeld, Wolfie and company.

The younger Cheney, who serves as a backroom advisor to her father, suggested that she would continue to be a "issue" for Democrats unless something was done to stop it immediately.
Sue
Mary Cheney - your sexual preference will only be an issue as long as your dad is willing to support amending the Constitution to deny certain Americans equal rights.
Get it now, Mary? Your dad thinks gays and lesbians are so inferior, he is willing to throw you, his own daughter, to the wolves so he can be president for another four years.
Who you sleep with is only an issue because your dad - not John Kerry - made it one.

No.

What part of that do you not understand? Just read his lips.

The marine corp usually takes only volunteers. But there is still the navy, airforce, etc. It's an interesting way that would allow GWB to get away with a lie -- not that he has ever done that.

Kerry should pound this one like a carpenter getting paid by the nail.....

PS: i was THIS close to forgetting and posting the original (long) URL and breaking Hell-O-Scan....
Oh ya!You cant break Hello scan any more.
Heres why.
TROLL-PROOF YOUR BROWSER
against Haloscan-busting trolls
and long-URL-pasting boneheads
This involves patching Haloscan's broken CSS on your own machine with a user style sheet:
------------------------------
If you use Mozilla or Firefox:
------------------------------
1. Find the chrome directory: Go to C:\Documents and Settings\your name\Application Data\Mozilla\Profiles\default\some random letters\chrome. (The path is a little different on Firefox). You will find two files in the chrome directory: userChrome-example.css and userContent-example.css.
2. Create a new text file with Notepad, with the following contents:
Save it to any directory ("My Documents", whatever) as "haloscan_fix.css".
2. In IE: Go to Tools -> Internet Options... In the "General" tab, click on the "Accessibility" button. Where it says "User style sheet" check the checkbox that says "Format Documents using my style sheet", click "Browse", and select haloscan_fix.css in the dialog. Click OK.
3. Close all IE windows and restart.
------------------------------
Your browser should now be immune to Haloscan-busting trolls, since the comments page table will now be fixed at 500 pixels wide. (Change the number to whatever you like.) Scrolling left and right is no longer required. If someone posts a long troll string or a long URL, you can still see it, but ordinary lines wrap and don't extend to the URL length. A red dotted line will appear along the table border surrounding the comments, so that you know this patch is being used.
This is a clumsy workaround since it affects all TABLE tags on all pages you visit that have been declared with a class attribute of "MainTable". UNFORTUNATELY Haloscan seems to have chosen a very commonly used name for its table element class. It seems that people mindlessly copy it from CSS tutorials. So this will affect the layout of any site that also contains a TABLE element with a class named "MainTable". One such site is Hotmail (you'll see the red dotted line there too).
The real solution would be to pressure Haloscan to add a "width:500px;" attribute to their P element in their own comment page CSS. It would be a one-line fix involving no extra server processing.

How many people are thinking "OMG! My gay kid might get mentioned in a Kerry speech!"

"Do not be misled...the 'draft' can be activated Nov. 3rd if aWol is elected.
Although the DoD claims that it has consistently filled slots on the board and that this does not indicate that plans for a draft are imminent, its own website shows a marked increase in the slots to be filled as well as a campaign to increase the percentage of the population registered with the SS.

Anybody know how to find local draft board members? It would an interesting sport to out them / ask their opinions.

It's very simple folks.
George Bush, Jr, says:
"Read my lips. No new draft."
Is that so hard to understand?

Involuntary volunteers!
What a concept!
Did you hear about the National Guard volunteers who involuntarily volunteered to go to on a "suicide mission" and now they volunteered to be court martialled?

In an earlier chapter in war and the draft:
I remember Lyndon Johnson in the 1964 campaign saying, "I will not send American boys to die in an Asian war."
He might even have meant it when he said it.
Unlike Bush, who just says whatever comes out -- inspired by God, of course.

National Review gets a clue"
OVER-PLAYING THE HAND [Andy McCarthy]
Just read yeasterday's WSJ editorial and heard some talk-radio railing about the same thing earlier today -- the purported "outing" of the Veep's daughter. I hate to say this, but I think this is really dumb. What Kerry did was utterly obnoxious, transparently pre-meditated, and worthy of being talked about at length. It goes to his judgment and character. In a close election, it could even be a decisive gaffe. But what he decidedly did not do is "out" Mary Cheney, and some of our folks are going way overboard by saying otherwise.
That term has a very specific, very extortionate meaning -- revealing the gay sexual preference of someone who has kept it publicly unknown, usually to try to intimidate the person (and others who also prefer to keep the matter private) into vocal support for the gay socio-political agenda. Ms. Cheney was already "out" -- that's the reason Kerry knew about it.
Strategically, it is counter-productive to claim otherwise. First, it must make gay people and the media think we are clueless -- as if we just yelled "touchdown" after a home run. If you're gonna speak with indignation convincingly -- and there's plenty of good reason to be indignant about what Kerry did -- it's important to sound like you know what the hell you are talking about.
More importantly, calling it an "outing" has the potential to make Kerry seem sympathetic -- because the focus becomes whether he is being falsely accused rather than his nakedly calculated crassness. It runs the risk, with the media's certain help to the Kerry campaign, of changing the subject to "who first revealed her sexual preference" instead of "how could someone who wants to be president behave that way." Indeed, I think this is already happening.
Sometimes I think we don't have enough feet to shoot ourselves in.

The draft will not begin on November 3. After Bush loses in both the electoral and popular votes, and sees all his court challenges being thrown out, and his hopes of a second term dwindling rapidly, he will declare martial law. The delay due to the election court challenges should bring this on around mid-December. Then he will reinstate the draft.

Annya,
i know nothing about statistics, except that done correctly they give a reasonably accurate reflection of the group polled. this year i'm reasonably certain they are going to be wildly off the mark. why?
i have called all my stoned slacker freinds, guys like me, who have never voted, i wanted to urge them to register and vote. to a person they all proclaimed, i'm registered and i'm voting. none of them particulary like kerry, but don't misunderestimate the power of bush hatred. some of them have draft age kids too. that's a very real factor.
my feeling is depending how it goes that could happen even if kerry gets elected, but it would certainly be less likely.

For Bush, talking is "hard work"; it's hard.
The description of the crowd falling silent is perfect.
Since Bush is yet again trading his cowboy boots for Freudian slippers, it bears recalling that in September after the speech before the UN and after Kerry's NYC speech, Bush kept trying to say how his opponent is wrong that America is safer with Saddam out of power. What he said in at least two different venues according to 2 different stump speech videos I saw was something like: "America is not safer....I mean America is safer with Saddam gone..."

I agree: that's exactly what Lush said ('no all-volunteer army").
Whatever he said after that was drowned out by the cheering at the arrest of 3 women who had the gall to wear t-shirts that read "Protect Our Civil Liberties". At a Lush Rally! Jeez, some people, huh?

I just don't get it. I don't see how they think that by saying you're all drafted now, surprise! Now go fight and die for oil, that Americans will just blindly go and do it. It's not going to be like Vietnam ever again. We're all smarter. We see the results of blindly following madmen into useless wars. Does anyone here under 34 actually expect to just show up and say where do I sign up?
What if they fought a war and nobody came?

We can't let another generation become Vietnamized (I know it isn't a real word, but I can't express it any other way.)At this point Kerry is like Obi-Wan-Kenobi: his our only hope. And no Atrios is not connected to this fix.We all do it to our own puters.

right on. The media is focused on the security moms or Cubans as the key voter groups but it'll be us Stoned Slackers that key the take back of our country. Come Nov 3rd I expect to see a greenish haze covering Philadelphia, Austin, Ann Arbor, etc as we celebrate our great victory.

Boob Novak is back, and he is outraged over the Mary Cheney remark.
I am sure this will be the main topic on all the sunday morning shows, but I sure hope that will be the end of it. It think it has cost Kerry a few points, and we need to recover fast.

"Get it now, Mary? Your dad thinks gays and lesbians are so inferior, he is willing to throw you, his own daughter, to the wolves so he can be president for another four years.
Who you sleep with is only an issue because your dad - not John Kerry - made it one.
Stinky"
No offense to Stinky for the good comment, but:
Mary Cheney GETS it all right. She's got the best of both worlds right now. She's a member of one of the richest and most powerful families on earth and can fuck anyone she damn well pleases.
The only defense is for Democrats to ask;
"WHY ARE THERE LESBIANS IN THE WHITE HOUSE?" on mailers sent out to all the coneheads in WV, TN, AL, and MS.

The government spends over $25 million a year to keep the selective service system running. It's notable that "women...are not subject to a draft under current law." (2003 annual report, page 4).
My hunble suggestion is that if there is a draft, everyone against it out themselves as gay. Nothing like a little theater to fuck up the system.

Tow, Safari isn't based on Mozilla. It is based on another.
As for that fix, I have no clue whether it would work or not in Safari.
K and Y, I flinched a couple of times during the Veep Debate when Edwards did that slip up on OsamabinHussein or HusseinisbinLaden. Haven't heard or read about Kerry doing it though.
But, Bush is the King of Mushmouthery. So, expect him to do more of this in his plain talking.

The I Feel Like I’m Fixin’ to Go AWOL Rag
Well come on all you Americans
Uncle Sam needs a helpin’ hand
Bumped us into a big ol’ jam
Over yonder in ‘raqistan
Real work’s a bore
Hear the rockets roar!
Now march yer ass to the war!
And it’s one, two, three
What are we fightin’ for?
Don’t ask me I don’t give a damn
Next stop Eye-raqistan!
And it’s five, six, seven
No! No! Guantanamo Gate!
Now who started this row?
All Hat! No Cow!
Whoopie! We’re all AWOL now!
Well come on Guardsmen sea to sea
And all you Guardgals where ‘er ye be
Gotta mount up and pound some sand
Over yonder in ‘raqistan
We need the gas
So mover yer ass
It’s a Weekend Warrior blast!
And it’s one . . .
Come on publicans across the land
Toss a pot to Iraqistan
Come on lobbyists – yer fight too
Or cough up a son, or a daughter’ll do
Be the first yer side o’ the street
To jack a leg in the grinder meat!
And it’s one . . .
Come on preachers near and far
Open yer Bibles to we are
CEOs don’t you be slow
More we kill – more dough to blow!
Guns and burgers!
Piss and Pot!
Halliburton gonna bid the lot!
And it’s one . . .
Come on Exxon ‘n’ git yer thrill
Lay some pipe and send ‘er the bill!
Abu grab you, Tex state pen
All the same – it’s ‘murikin!
We’ll sell ‘er soul
Dilate ‘er hole
Tank ‘er up ‘n’ watch ‘er roll!
And it’s one . . .
Now sorry y’all for the mess we made
It’s how we figger that poker’s played
Keep yer stinkin’ Eye-raqi sand
Don’t you fer’ners understand –
We’ll all be free
’s ‘mocracy!
Now drop that RPG!
And it’s one . . .
Now come on bloggers around the globe
Post yer comments – and lock ‘n’ load!
Come on journalists, you know who you are
Bring the feathers and bring the tar!
Up on a rail!
Heigh Chimp! No bail!
AWOL – a hitch in jail!
And it’s one, two, three
What are we fightin’ for?
Don’t ask me I don’t give a damn
Next stop Eye-raqistan!

And...any fixes out there for Safari?
Spinoza
Yes indeed Spinoza
Safari fix:
Create the plain text .css file from MillionthMonkey's directions.
Save it anywhere, it doesn't seem to make
a difference which folder. I just saved it
to my desktop.
Go to Preferences, then Advanced,
and under "Style Sheet" select
"other" and choose the .css file you just
created.

All we can hope is that his people don't have the good sense to lock him up and adjust his medications before he flips out. However, if there is suddenly a need for him to attend to business that makes little or no sense, you'll know his handlers are allowing him to play Reagan nappy time when My Pet Goat, reading by Condi Rice.

Tow, Don't worry about being code clueless.
I really have no idea how that code could do anything if someone used it on their computers. Seems impossible to me. But, I know next to nothing about such things.
And, if the text don't fit, I just close the Haloscan window and surf to another site to avoid having to scroll.

The Kerry campaign needs to make it clear that Mary Cheney made her living selling beer as a liason to the gay community. That will not go over well with the fundies. To be gay and sell beer. The Bush campaign will drop the issue fast if the issue is framed in terms of Mary and Coors.

The Kerry campaign needs to make it clear that Mary Cheney made her living selling beer as a liason to the gay community. That will not go over well with the fundies. To be gay and sell beer. The Bush campaign will drop the issue fast if the issue is framed in terms of Mary and Coors.

JOHN KERRY IS GOING TO TAX SICK AND NEEDY AMERICANS WITH BIG GOVERNMENT-RUN HEALTH CARE. THIS MEANS WAITING YEARS TO GET PROCEDURES DONE, RATIONING AND HIGHLY COMPROMISED QUALITY. IF YOU LAY OUT KERRY'S PLAN ON A FLOW CHART AND STAND IT VERTICAL, IT'S AS HIGH AS A 3 STORY BUILDING AND WILL GIVE YOU VERTIGO.
Get the facts and stop repeating talking points as if you're in a cult. Go to Kerry's website and read through his healthcare proposal and contrast it with our current state of affairs. Take some responsiblity and de-program yourself.

And the only reason I'm singing you this song
now is cause you may know somebody in a
similar situation, or you may be in a similar
situation, and if your in a situation like
that there's only one thing you can do and
that's walk into the shrink wherever you are
,just walk in say "Shrink, You can get
anything you want, at Alice's restaurant.".
And walk out. You know, if one person, just
one person does it they may think he's really
sick and they won't take him. And if two
people, two people do it, in harmony, they
may think they're both faggots and they won't
take either of them. And three people do it,
three, can you imagine, three people walking
in singin a bar of Alice's Restaurant and
walking out. They may think it's an
organization. And can you, can you imagine
fifty people a day,I said fifty people a day
walking in singin a bar of Alice's Restaurant
and walking out. And friends they may thinks
it's a movement.

Knowing the way these ghouls work, it would be something like "Expanded Alternate Government Labor Environment" - EAGLE, for short. Or maybe they could call it the "Compassionate Service Act."

Yes, I repeat:

Ah you see lemons, I see lemonade. That's 1100 more job openings. And name one coompany that will not only let you fight for freedom, but give you a really fancy punched-up burial ( I heard they are going to use caskets from now on made from metal retrieved from the WTC).

We're going to need to mobilize after the election. Kerry is going to win, but the thugs will still be there to tear him down.God save me for saying this, but we need to use the Republican media model and use it to our advantage. We need to form a cohesive structure to impart our message to the media. Norquist has a meeting every week to get out talking points. Why can't we? Maybe someone like Carville can have a phone conference every week to get out our talking points. I'm not just talking about the big boys. There needs to be a cohesive structure for the grass roots also. We have the internet. Let's use it to our full advantage. We are going to have to mount a counter-attack whatever the results of 11/02/04. How do we go about creating this organization.

Oh ya!You cant break Hello scan any more.
Alas, the fix doesn't work for all of us, for some reason. Other people have gotten it to work in Firefox 1.0 Preview, but it will not work in mine. I spent most of last night working with a lovely anonymous gal on the Mozilla boards who spent hours trying to help me with it -- nothing worked, not even a piece of javascript she came up with. It isn't the browser, because she got it to work on her Firefox PR1.
I can kinda work around it by opening Eschaton in Firefox, and if a thread's broken, pulling up H'scan in IE, where I can implement the fix. It's awkward but at least it's readable.
But I would respectfully request that people not get in the habit of posting long URLs. I'm not gonna bitch about it anymore, though, 'cuz it's not a problem for most folks anymore -- thanks to Millionth Monkey and that brilliant fix. (Oh, apparently those of you, and me at work, stuck with Mac OS9 or earlier plus IE5 for Mac cannot use the fix, and Chris Tucker mentioned it didn't work in iCab.)
(BTW, you can also change the "dashed red" to "solid gray" in the code, and the border's considerably more stylish.)

"Anybody know how to find local draft board members? It would an interesting sport to out them / ask their opinions."
Spinoza - "Out them"? Why not just ask me?
Most of those of us who have volunteered to become members of our local Selective Service Boards did so a year ago when the issue first arose and we realised that it was more realistic to be in the system than outside it.
You don't have to 'out ' anyone. Your local Selective Service board's phone number is in the book.

Why should we realistically be concerned about a draft if Bush is re-elected?
Because if he wins THIS time, he and his right-wing machine will, without a doubt, declare that victory as a total vindication of his foreign policy, and a unquestionable mandate to do the same. Our media, as ever, cowed by his victory, will trumpet this as the correct interpretation. How can they oppose in any way the voice of the people.
And what is Bush's foreign policy? To attack convenient targets throughout the world in pursuit of "democracy", or against any whiff of a threat, real or imagined. Is it even conceivable that in the next four years, no such opportunity will raise its head?
And when this invasion takes place, Bush will suddenly find out -- what a surprise -- that he needs even more troops to "keep us safe." And then he'll explain to the American people that, well, he needs a draft a few kids to do their patriotic duty, despite his promise.
The point here is that Bush will NOT need an ACTUAL terrorist episode, or an AUTHENTIC threat, to occur to engage in another war. He will feel fully entitled to do so in virtue of his election itself.

Bush Boy's fuckin' up the country, babe where we gonna go
We're going to some place where we've never been before
We're going, we're going to Iraq in real quick time
We're going, we're going to Iraq in real quick time
Bush will jump in the water, stay drunk all the time
We're gonna leave this city, got to get away
Cause Bush n' Cheenee will draft us
sure as you can say.
All this fussing and fighting, man, you know I sure can't stay
Now baby, pack your leaving trunk, you know we've got to leave today
Just exactly where we're going I cannot say, but We might even leave
the USA
'Cause there's a brand new game that I sure as fuck ain't gonna play
No use of you running, or screaming and crying
'Cause you've got a home as long as I've got mine

Bush Boy's fuckin' up the country, babe where we gonna go
Bush Boy's fuckin' up the country, babe where we gonna go
We're going to some place where we've never been before
We're going, we're going to Iraq in real quick time
We're going, we're going to Iraq in real quick time
Bush will jump in the water, stay drunk all the time
We're gonna leave this city, got to get away
Cause Bush n' Cheenee will draft us

Noname mom, You cannot dodge the draft in Canada this time. Our government,in its infinite wisdom (more then likely in a vain attempt to get Paul Celluci to shut the fuck up for thiry seconds) decided to sign a treaty that allows the RCMP to arrest and deport draft dodgers.

I've been registering the few remaining Youngsters I can find to vote and hand delivering their forms to the Dem Party HQ. The draft question is the main reason they sign up.
Not a one of them believes AWOL when he claims he won't reinstate the draft.
I am SO gonna volunteer for the local draft board.

TV SPOT THEY'LL NEVER DO:
[clip] "I made it very plain. We will not have an all-volunteer army."
[VIDEO: Grainy zoom-in on W's face after making that comment. Pause between that line and the next sentence, time-stretched slightly, giving viewer ample opportunity to study frozen "I'm THINKING!" look]
[AUDIO: Slight cavernous reverb on the line, which has time to trail after line finishes and audio under reverb is taken DOWN, so that long, silent "reaction" is emphasized]
[clip:] "WE WILL have an all-volunteer army,"
[AUDIO: Same FX; emphasis on stone silent reaction]
[clip:] "Let me restate that. We will not have a draft."
[AUDIO: VO kicks-in immediately]
[VO:] "Are you ABSOLUTELY... one hundred percent... SURE... that your president just misspoke? Really? Which time? Well? WILL there be a draft? Or WON'T there be a draft? He SAID there would be no draft. George W. Bush has said a LOT of things... remember 'weapons of mass destruction?' Right. Well, this time, if you'd like to wager your son or daughter that he's telling the truth... please. Go right ahead and vote for him." [etc]
A few more ads like those, this year, and maybe we wouldn't be narrowly losing in most of the polls, right now.
It takes Rove to beat Rove. We got spirit. We got the truth. We got balls. We ain't got a Rove.

Who will be the last dead American out of Iraq? It probably will not be number 1100 - who died today. But once we crossed the 1000 mark, I figured the next significant milestone would be 50,000, giving the lunacy of Vietnam a run for its money. The acrid smell of death grows more overpowering every day that these apocalypticians remain in office. As Americans, we are all war criminals now. How much glee there was in the land when CNN broadcast live the faux toppling of Saddam in Firdos Square. War as bloodless sport sold a lot of advertising. Now that the truth of war has so undeniably proven itself otherwise, no advertisers, no news. Advertisers, who don't really give a fuck about America, want happy news. Basically they do not want news at all, they want happy themes, a spiritual morphine to help the pain of time go by. Anyway, may God hang the deaths of these 1100 - and the many more - around the neck of Bush and his outrageous, inhuman cadre of advisers. Also, may God once again bring fiery justice to Israel for their opportunistic whoredom of the American evangelical FOOLS. Goddamn them all.

"Ah you see lemons, I see lemonade. That's 1100 more job openings.
Spinoza"
I suspect you're being ironic, but in fact, this isn't true. Most of those people long ago lost their stateside jobs because they've been gone too long. It provided an easy way for many of their employers to reduce their head count without declaring an actual layoff. They would not have been rehired anyway, or in far more cases (13,000 or so) they are so badly and permanently injured when they return that they couldn't resume their jobs anyway.
Good news, though! They can't look for a job, so they aren't counted as unemployed, so the unemployment rate won't go up! Whoo-hoo! U-S-of-fuckin'-A!

Yeah, it looks like a defibrillator alright. So.... both Bush and Dick have serious problems with their hearts? And the W.H. is hiding it so a certain clique can remain in power? Hell, why doesn't a reporter ask him straight out? (oh, right,..... we don't have a *real* press anymore. Slipped my mind).

I think it would more cost-effective to simply gerrymander the southern Canadian border down to say the NY-PA southern border, thus encompassing all of New England and NY (except the City: you REALLY don't want that burden!).
Then I wouldn't have to move (from upstate)!

Dear anonymous troll,
JOHN KERRY IS GOING TO TAX SICK AND NEEDY AMERICANS WITH BIG GOVERNMENT-RUN HEALTH CARE. THIS MEANS WAITING YEARS TO GET PROCEDURES DONE
My wife is alive today thanks to cancer surgery and followup treatment performed in England under the National Health Service, on two weeks' notice. The rules are simple: if you carry an NHS card and you have a life-threatening illness, you get treatment. It's real. We've been there.
I fervently hope that you do not have a spouse. But if you do, I hope that the two of you never have to experience the US healthcare system under similar circumstances.

"And, yet, today while I was working the Kerry booth at our local community fair, I saw young people w/ Bush stickers. I don't get how any young person can be supporting Bush.
Hecate"
Walk up to them and say:
"I want you shake your hand and tell you I respect your right to vote for your candidate. And I want you to remember this moment--this very moment when we spoke--when the mortar shell blows your guts out and you lie dying in the sands of Syria, 300 days from now. Now please go and enjoy your last 300 days on earth, son (or young lady as the case may be)."

It's all Ed Gillespie. He's still pissed about the Rock the Vote people telling him to shove his edict up his colon powell.
Besides he has nothing better to do than be reactive at this point. The 'Bush record' thing hasn't given him much to work with.

"What Orwellian name will the Republicans give to their draft?"
I'm sure it'll be something equally as nauseating as "Operation Enduring Freedom". I'd like to posit the following:
1. Fat Rich Assholes Use Deferments Act (FRAUD)
2. Liberty In A Republican Society Act (LIARS)
3. Registration of Voluntary Enlistees Act (ROVE)

Well, I saw different results today, bigvic, but remember one thing: even a "narrow" victory will be a LOSS.
A "narrow" victory can... and will... be STOLEN. If the results were, say 54 Kerry - 43 Bush, it would be nearly impossible to stop the clock and steal it again. The only recourse they would have left would be to drag every state closer than 60-40 into court, claiming "irregularities"... which they would still absolutely do.
And I'd take that! Because at least that way, if it were to drag on indefinitely and they were to, say, nullify any states' results based on "irregularities"... and THEN they stopped the clock!.. the country simply would not tolerate it, and all bets on the social contract would be off.
Which, in turn, would generate the level of outrage it would finally take for the peasants to rise up, and string 'em all up. In a manner of speaking, of course.
Tinfoil, perhaps, but these people (and you listen to me good!) DO NOT DO DEFEAT. They are RADICALS; they do not accept our Constitutional system as sacred (see also Paul Krugman's "The Great Unraveling"). Anything short of an overwhelming victory for our side = de facto defeat.

Bushwahd,
C'mon! Didn't you know that NYC the center of the Universe? Besides, at least you'd be able to actually HEAR the announcements on the subways if we were Canadian.
Come to think of it, I kind of like the way that sounds: New York City, Ontario. Or you could just shunt us over to Quebec. That way, you could hate New Yorkers and the French in one fell swoop.
Hell, my sister in Australia has already sent me the emigration paperwork, just in case. But then again, they just re-elected a pint-sized (but equally stupid and destructive) version of Bush...much to her chagrin.

Barry, Barry, Barry,
Calm down. I and you and everyone else here will fight to the death for every vote this election.
I had an eye-opening experience at a large party for a lifelong friend. Most folks at the party know each other's partent and brothers & sisters. A number of them turned reThug after they got rich and are political whores. None are fundies. Even so, I was shocked and delighted to learn that 2 of the most rock-ribbed thugs there sidled up to me and said they hate Bu$h and that Bu$h turned them from the Republican party.
I hear this a lot.

bigvic, mah man:
Here's the thing. We will always have anecdotal stories to encourage us. The lifelong Rethug you know who suddenly can't stand Bush; the lawn signs; "not one person I know is voting for Bush", etc.
But polls, say what you want about them, are indeed scientific. You know, "science", as opposed to "creationism" (got your attention, now?).
And while you can have a skew of up to maybe 7 or 8 points between certain polls, what does it say about a methodology that can look at a nation of a few hundred million people, and get it that close?
I've heard people grouse about broadcast ratings for years, as well: "Nobody I know watches 'Fear Factor' or 'The Apprentice'!" I can honestly say that's true, in my case. But those who have no respect or understanding of research and polling are like the old song by Bill Cosby, about "The Little Ole Man". He just sat there and got run over by a train. Why? "'Cause I cannot believe... that it's HAPPENING!"
I submit to you that people who "don't believe in polls" (ohh, give me a buck for everyone you know who has said that, and I'm off to Tahiti!) are as faith-based as W. They simply, well, er, just CAN'T believe that research could possibly have any validity! Because I personally don't comprehend how it could possibly work!
That's why when reading these posts, I skip all the feelgood shit about lawn signs. I'm glad it pumps up the troops, I really am! But please... just give me a 10-point lead in three lousy polls until Election Day, and I'll be the most optimistic mofo you've ever met.

" if it were to drag on indefinitely and they were to, say, nullify any states' results based on "irregularities"... and THEN they stopped the clock!.. the country simply would not tolerate it"
Said what? I don't know about you bub, but I live in the U.S. of A., where the people will tolerate *anything*! Hell, the "Brooks Brother Revolt" consisted of what, about a dozen pasty, chubby, irritable Republicans intimidating a couple of county officials? And then what? The country rolled over and continued dozing.
I was half a world away when I saw Republican slime marching around in front of the Vice President's house in DC, with their charming "Al Gore! Get out of Dick Cheney's House" refrain. I couldn't believe that Democrats didn't rush to the scene to shout down those weasels, instead, followed the Ned Flanders "Can't we all just get along" Kumbayah pathway. And what do you expect to happen this time? That if they steal the election again that Democratic soccer moms will build barracades in the street and set flame to tires? That "Street Fighting Man" is going to be blaring from Democratic stereos as they prepare to battle their Republican neighbors?
Let's face it, Democrats aren't going to do diddleysquat, not when the election is stolen, not when the tanks start rolling into Iran, not when the Army comes for their kids. Never. Not ever. They'll stand there and take whatever these monsters dish out, so please..... don't start with "the country won't take it" horseshit, ok?

Thanks so much for that remark. I'm so pleased that I'm 1/4 Canadian. Maybe someday soon, I'll return. But first, I have to cast a certain vote...

"Open a vein"? If that's your reaction, then knock yourself out. I hear all of my pals talking tough about what will happen in America if Bush were to steal the election again, and it rings pretty damned hollow, dontcha think?
Ask yourself this question chum: Aside from bitching about it, just what would YOU do? Anything?
I rest my case.

Wow!! On the one hand, I'm too pessimistic... and on the other hand, I'm singing "Kumbaya"! I love it!
Thurber, boobie, you're having too much caffeine with your keyboard! Just so we establish the ground rules of who this one member of the "Democrats" is, and how he feels about stuff:
I was bitching and fuming in the REAGAN era that we wuz being rolled! A guy later wrote a book about press coverage of that administration. Perhaps you've read it? It's called "ON BENDED KNEE".
I was watching the Sunday morning white people gasbaggin', before it was fashionable! I've always been in a snit over the fact that right-wing corporatists are the "moderates" and genocidal fascists are "on the right", on these shows.
Ya want more? When George H.W. Bush was asked in an interview why the End Of Communism... this stupid-ass country's fucking raison d'tre!.. wasn't eliciting more of an animated response from Poppy, the old bastard goes, "Wayulll.. I'm not the kind of guy who wears his heart on his sleeve, ya know." WHAT?!?! WHY AREN'T YOU MEDIA FUCKWADS SPLASHING THIS MINDBLOWINGLY IDIOTIC REMARK ACROSS EVERY FRONT PAGE IN AMERICA??
Then, when this same modern-day president kept vetoing a civil rights bill a thousand times, because he claimed "I'm against QUOTAS", and Ted Kennedy finally got him a bill with specific language that said, 'QUOTAS ARE PROHIBITED", the motherfucker vetoed THAT one. Said it would cause "QUOTAS". WHAT?? HELLO?!? WHERE IS THE CALL FOR THE IMPEACHMENT OF MODERN HISTORY'S FIRST ANTI-CIVIL RIGHTS PRESIDENT? Nada.
When the saintly, matronly darling of the women's magazines, Barbara Bush, called Hillary Clinton... you know, the first lady of the frickin' USA... a "bitch", it was swept under the rug by a subservient press, in a gentlemanly fashion. WHERE THE HELL WAS THE "SCANDAL"?!?
Babs again: when she was asked to give a quote about the AIDS crisis, she came out with something damned close to this: "The message is simple. If you have sex... you will DIE." WHERE WERE THE HEADLINES, "RETARD IN WHITE HOUSE!" ??
When George W. Bush took the tobacco settlement that two sides of lawyers in the state of Texas had hammered-out after years of litigation, and just flat-out refused to PAY the state's lawyers, who were out millions...
When Jeb Bush, in his first run for governor of Florida, was asked what he would do for Florida's Black community, and he tossed off, with the patented Bush smirk, quote, "Probably nothing"...
So Thurber. You suggest that "Democrats" (and by this do you mean the NATIONAL PARTY or the PISSED-OFF RANK AND FILE?) might not have seen the need to be slightly aroused and ready to tear off heads and shit down necks, when the Rethugs overthrew the American government in 2000.
Well, maybe I was the only one, then. If so, I wouldn't bet the college money that that's the case in this land today. Good night.

IF we need a draft in order just to keep things at status quo in Iraq and Afghanistan, how will President Kerry avoid it? In his speeches he says he will get 40,000 more people in the Army, but how? I'm not trying to bring anyone down or start a fight, I'm just wondering...I'm actually starting to think a draft wouldn't be horrible--at least people would be forced to pay attention to the news.

Again i find myself wondering what percentage of American troops will fire on Americans protesting a stolen vote. Or arrest the Democratic members of Congress at Bush's order.
Unfortunately, the downside of a volunteer military is that it selects for those who just love taking orders; it is not a cross-section of the population.
i live near a major University with an ROTC chapter. One of them has a bumper sticker on his truck that says "VIVA BUSH."
it sounds distressingly like a slogan in a bananna republic. Scary.

Barry, when I used the term "Democrat", I was talking about *virtually* everyone who carries that tag. Now, maybe you were out on the street by your lonesome, standing up to the fuckwad Republicans that thought that they owned the White House, no matter what the vote said. If so, your brave face never made it to my side of the planet bro, so I'll say "thank you" now. But on the off chance that you weren't out there, then what is your political curriculum vitae to me? I'm bone tired of people spouting this "We're not gonna take it!" line, when, in fact, *they ARE gonna to take it*. According to you, you've been impotently saying this very thing since the Reagan era. Thanks for making my point for me.
Ron CO: (heh) That's your response? That's what you want to go with? Look, I'll give you a "do-over" because I know you weren't running on all cylinders when you cobbled that one together.
