This is way off topic, but if someone here has read something similar to the following I would like to know the source. I am nearly certain that I have read it before, but when I googled it I came up with nothing. It appeared in a column in a local paper and I believe it is plagiarized from another source. I know the editor and he would not appreciate plagiarism so it would be nice to be able to prove the deception.
It is basically an article about voting "for America". Though it doesn't mention Bush by name, the implication is very clear.
It starts off :
“What do you see when you think of America? Do we envision a small child on his father’s shoulders waving an American flag during a Fourth of July Parade or do we see a parade of protestors fighting for yet another ‘right’ that they claim?”
It goes on like this for several mind-numbing paragraphs, mostly trying to make a link between religion and the founding fathers, and decrying the the fact that God has lost “his rightful place at the head of our nation”.
I apologize for the double post.

Apologies for being OT, but:
In Riverside, CA, on a single block three Kerry yard signs disappeared overnight (the BCO4 sign next door was untouched).
Same day, in Orange County, I was parked in a parking structure in Costa Mesa. My car sports both "Re-Defeat Bush" and KE signs. When I returned to my car 45 minutes later, some douchebag had pasted a BC04 sticker on my drivers' side window (since my signs were on the inside surface of the windows, could not easily be defaced).
Thanks, BCO4 douchebags. I am kicking another $50 to the DNC in your honor.

Telegraph: "Preparations for a last-ditch defence of Fallujah have been stepped up by Iraqi militants after the breakdown of negotiations with Baghdad aimed at averting an American-led onslaught on the city...
An attack will be postponed until December, but imposing a cordon around the city will tie down 2,000 crack Marine and Army troops...
Meanwhile, a UN audit of spending by the American administration in Iraq, leaked overnight in Washington, revealed that half the £3.2 billion spent in the first half of this year could not be accounted for, including one payment of £800 million into a Kurdish bank account."

Luckily, where I grew up, folks were equal opportunity ass kickers. They didn't bother with where anyone's grandmother was born before they stomped the shit out you. Good ol' boys are open-hearted lugs like that.
Course, if you weren't white, well...sometimes that was a different stories. Mostly, however, it was white people beating the bejeezus out of white people as one.

Does anybody see the Franken vs. O'Reilly war as a nerdy Jewish kid hitting the anti-semitic Irish Catholic bully back after a few decades of seething over it?
That's kind of how I see Franken's special dislike for the man. Of course I have absolutely nothing to back it up, but I just brought it up to make a point how we all think in ethnic stereotypes to a certain extent.
O'Reilly sells his Irishness. His target viewer is the 50 year old ex Marine in Nasau County who screams at his TV and hates Hillary Clinton.
If he had a WASPY persona like William F. Buckley (also an Irish Catholic) his act wouldn't be the same.

Same with being a WASP. William F. Buckley (Irish Catholic) and Gwynneth Paltrow (Jewish) both give off WASP vibes.
O'Reilly just exudes that NYC area suburban Irish Catholic asshole persona. He reminds me exactly of my racist uncle Charlie (his target audience).
Do you really think Tucker Carlson could appeal to the same demographic?

If Bush wins, it will be about 1 month or 2 of depression followed by the most ferocious backlash from the lest we've ever seen.
Are you afraid of the way Bush is backing himself into a corner over the draft. If he wins, we invade Iran. We'll need a draft.
Won't he restrict democracy even more rather than repeat his father's "no new taxes" gaffe?

SWR: I wonder if the 'depression' will last even a month, especially if there is anything remotely resembling Florida '00. You can see it here- it just seems people are really wound up- and win or lose, we are looking at weird times for a long while to come.
John Kerry (and all the rest of the Dems who ran for President this year are as well) is an incredibly brave man to want to be President after George...

someone in my neighborhood did the very same thing with the Bush/cheney sign, and graffiti'd the internet address on the bottom so it now says "georgewbush LIES"
or maybe you live in my neighborhood
anyway, yay for all the little personal protests i've been seeing everywhere lately. Was driving through town (a very liberal town in a very blue state, but nonetheless), and saw a random old guy in a chair with a huge sign that said "Bush is lying to you". I've seen lots of stuff like that lately. It's heartening.

As an Irish-Catholic, it troubles me that somehow O'Reilly is supposed to resonate with me because his name has an O followed by an apostrophe. Stewart and Franken might not be Irish or Catholic, but they are passionate, funny, politically-minded, and smart asses...Irish-Catholic in spirit.

I've just found out about some seriously jacked up stuff regarding Halliburton and Iraq in general. We've got to start an email and phone campaign to get the media to cover this stuff. People are dying and all we seem to be able to talk about is O'Reilly's loofah. Not that I'm not pleased to see that blowhard get his, mind you, but we're down to the wire here. If we fail to get the truth out now, it will be too late on November 3rd.

I love Steve for cheering me up after that depressing Suskind article you directed us to, Atrios.
Gilliard seems to be saying that because the woman was dismissed, and she can add wrongful firing to the complaint, she can depose other women at Fox about being harrassed, on the legal theory that there was a harrassment-friendly culture at Fox.
And she can depose women from earlier phases of Bill's career.
In other words, this can turn into a fishing expedition as big as the Arkansas project, if her lawyer cares to take it that far.
Embarrassment for years and years for the bully, and heaven knows what scandals-in-waiting lurk at Fox.
I happened to finally watch Outfoxed today -- well, inspired to stop procrastinating because of this story, really -- and O'Reilly's treatment of Glickman really was atrocious.
Funniest thing: he went to Franken's lawyer to sue for defamation. But the lawyer said he had to prove O'Reilly knew he was lying, which was difficult because of one thing: O'Reilly lies constantly.
Franken couldn't help laughing as he pointed out that a pattern of pathological lying is a great defense against slander.
O'Reilly must be mortified by this thing. The specificity of her complaints almost guarantees she recorded the calls and perhaps the in-person harrassment.
Tapes. Lovely.
Man, $98G a year salary for being just one of O'Reilly's producers? Good gig.
Except you have to put up with harrassing assholes.
Interestingly, Franken is mostly somber and terse on the subject, even with O'Reilly's thuggish threat toward him revealed in the complaint.
Although he's started statements with "O'Reilly--" and Catherine has yelled at him, "high road, high road!"
It must be hard.

OT, but not much:
“We cannot simply suspend or restrict civil liberties until the War on Terror is over, because the War on Terror is unlikely ever to be truly over. September 11, 2001, already a day of immeasurable tragedy, cannot be the day liberty perished in this country.”
Bourgeois v. Peters, No. 02-16886 (11th Cir., Oct. 15, 2004), Slip Op. at p. 16.

I think that the whole "falafel" thing is not a Freudian slip, Thaty-there O'Reilly (And, despite the name, I'll bet he's not even an Irish citizen) actually has sex with middle eatern foodstuffs...!
Yep. Sources confirm that rumours exist that the buy once engaged in a contest with Sean Hannity to see how many Baklavas they could fit in each other's rectums.
Turns out, they are such a couple of big assholes that they ran out of balkavas before either man had lost interest...

WHY ISN'T THIS AN ISSUE???? Could some american explain who this got in? And what it implies. names, addresses and telephone numbers.
The recruiting list thing was an issue a couple of years ago when it was passed, but that was during the GOP's free reign period where the Dems were afraid to put up any real opposition.

Ooops,
Jeb Bush caught using Voter Felon list that he knew was false.
from dKos,
State authorities in Florida told Jeb Bush that his original list of voters to be purged as Felons was created with inaccurate and incorrect data and methodology in advance of its publication.
Jeb Bush deliberately disregarded it and attempted to use it anyway to purge black voters from Florida's voter rolls. this has got to be spread around.

Kerry will lose because he is not only spineless, he's SPUNKLESS. No prostate gland. Totally removed due to cancer. He's on estrogen due to the fact that testosterone causes the cancer to recur. That's why he's always doing what his clownish wife calls manly things. Crawling on his belly after deer with his trusty double barrel shotgun, windsurfing, bikeriding, etc... This guy is a phony and everyone knows it. That's why women won't vote for him. He's SPUNKLESS!

"Ooops, Jeb Bush caught using Voter Felon list that he knew was false."
Sheesh... you think that's bad:
The Department of "Justice" will be placing election "monitors" in key states to (prevent?) voter intimidation. What absolute BS - bring your photo ID even if your state didn't require one the last time (and if you don't have one, get one soon).
Oh, and just for the hell of it, a link to more facist crap from Colorado (my apologies - I'm not good at hyperlinks this late, or early, in the day - but copy this blockbuster into your navigation bar, and check it out):
This is the GOP people (a party that controls 2/3's of the states), so be prepared...

Didn't you hear?
"The No Child Left Behind Act is really a jobs act."
- Presidnet Bush, 3rd Presidential debate
thought
Exactly. This is the only fully-funded provision in the No Child Left Behind act. That's how the act will lead to job creation - and how it can be invoked as the answer to low wage jobs. The rest of NCLB is bereft of funding (like IDEA for special ed) and is simply another drain on state budgets - and the states are allowed to set the standards for what "left behind" means, so that part is pointless as well. As they run out of money, you can count on the states to gut educational standards and measurements in order to "comply" with NCLB. The whole thing is a cruel joke and is the "accomplishment" Bush used to answer almost every domestic question.

Thanks "Sam". Whether things are true or not never seems to matter to Bush voters, does it? - In fact wilful blindness to PREPOSTEROUS LIES seems to be the common characteristics of the few cretins still willing to support him/it.
It's the only way you can actually stomach voting for Bush, isn't it, "Sam"?
Relax "Sam". Nobody gives a fuck how you justify failing in your democratic duty to vote for the better candidate rather than admit you were hoodwinked once before by the Bush machine.
Failure is, well, miserable failure...
"Sam Boogliodemus", you are entitled to vote for the dry-humping shoe-sniffer Bush, but at least have the good sense to do it quietly, the good manners to do it without drooling on your greasy cum-stained keyboard, and the self-respect to not come here trying to justify your pathetic, weak, trechery to us.
You are not fooling us, and I doubt you are really fooling yourself.
Indeed, why are you posting here, "Sam", if Kerry is such a "no prostate phoney"? You remind me of a "straight" guy hanging around in a gay bar...

He's SPUNKLESS!"

First-class ticket and private jet not good enough for "regular guy" Sean Bukkake Hannity
Less than a week before he was scheduled to speak to students at Washington University in St. Louis, ABC Radio Networks host and FOX News Channel host Sean Bukkake -- who regularly casts himself as an "average American" while attacking Senator John Kerry's "elitist lifestyle" -- reportedly canceled the appearance because flight arrangements were not made to his liking.
According to an October 6 article in the Washington University magazine Student Life,Bukkake Hannity "reportedly asked that the media not be informed of his motivations for the decision." The students who had coordinated the event -- who had raised $20,000 to bring Bukkake to their campus -- described what happened:
Bukkake cited personal reasons for his cancellation, said law student Ruth Hollander after speaking with the right-wing pundit over the phone yesterday. Bukkake, Hollander said, requested a private jet to fly him to St. Louis for the speech, but then rejected "several" different jets offered by a private donor.

OT -- Here's a quote from the Telegraph in the UK:
"Meanwhile, a UN audit of spending by the American administration in Iraq, leaked overnight in Washington, revealed that half the £3.2 billion spent in the first half of this year could not be accounted for, including one payment of £800 million into a Kurdish bank account." What's this all about?
Report out from KPMG for the International Advisory and Monitoring Board.
The Fact Sheet (PDF) is 4 pages long, and is broken down into sections:
CPA-Administered Projects
Commander’s Emergency Response Program (CERP)
Iraqi Ministries
Kurdish Regional Government (KRG)
Iraqi Provincial Governments
The Development Fund for Iraq: Report of Factual Findings in Connection with Disbursements (PDF) is 28 pages long.
The Report and Fact Sheet are posted at the website of the Committee on Government Reform, Minority Office where Rep. Henry Waxman (D-CA) is the Ranking Minority Member. Information is posted under the section titled Problems Found in Bush Administration Management of Iraqi Funds
On the £800 million, Kurds wouldn't allow an audit.
Read the report, it's frikkin unbelievable. And then remind yourself that Little Ledeen was handing out money with her little Heritage Foundation friends so she could one day be all grown up.

slatsg,
When I think of America, I think of a bunch of anti-authoritarian hell-raisers at Lexington and Concord, fighting for another "right" they claimed. In other words, people who took up arms against their own government.
Most decidedly NOT flag-worshipping, Kool-Aid drinking authoritarians.
The rise of the Cult of Old Glory and the American Legion version of history was a radical break with the American past. Until the mid-19th century, most Americans would have adamantly refused to say a loyalty oath to the flag "and to the republic for which it stands." It wasn't until the depression of the 1890s, when capitalist elites were menaced by Populism, Coxey's Army, the Pullman strike, and a militant labor/socialist movement, that this bizarre official ideology was cobbled up as a way of getting the peoples' minds right.
Thanks to a century of the government schools' propaganda, most people have no idea how radical a break this was with the skeptical, anti-authoritarian American mindset of earlier years.

me,
As you'r a Brit living in Asia, you may not be aware of the strong push among parents of high-school age students, especially on the East Coast, to have that portion of the law changed. It's been going on for at least two years. It's incredibly distressing. There is an opt-out mechanism, but the student must request it him- or herself.
Of course, since the SCLM never mentions it, one might assume that, yes, no one gives a boot and that we Democrats are all passive.
But that assumption would be incorrect.

UN security council Resolution 1483 required that US use Iraqi funds "in a TRANSPARENT manner to meet the humanitarian needs of the Iraqi people and for other persons benefitting the people of Iraq".
The Defense dept has until Nov. 5 to turn over records, deposits, withdrawls, documents, contracts, spreadsheets, memos, emails, etc. etc. etc. They of course can stall by submitting a letter saying they have a good reason not to comply by that date and the election will be over by then.
Thankyou Mr. Waxman and Mr. Shays.
Here's hoping the committee on Government Reform will be allowed to accomplish much in the coming year.

Oh, f**k me. Just turned on NPR and Sunday Edition had their "soundbites of the week". Third up? JK's Mary Cheney comment (which, upon hearing YET again, strikes me as incredibly sensitive), followed by Lynne "I am NOT a closet case!" Cheney's "bad man" remarks (which seemed to go on forever), followed by Elizabeth Edwards thinking how sad Lynne's statement was (which played for about 1/4 of the time that Lynne's did).
F**k you, NPR. You ain't getting a plug nickel from me for this beg-a-thon.

...and for occasional articles about cooking and food. He's the best liberal blogger for that.

I'm am so surprised no one has brought up these two words. These are the two words that probably haunt Bill o'reilly at night. Bring them up in his company, and he will become enraged. The words are:

Mackris may not get a jury trial. There's no Constitutional right to a jury trial in cases in equity. I'm pretty sure NY doesn't give you a jury automatically for equity cases, either. If so, and if it goes that far, Fox will go for the bench trial. Her bigger problem is that she returned to work w/O'Falafel. Did the harassment start before -- or after -- she returned? I hope it was after. In hostile environment cases, plaintiff must prove that the environment was so bad that it resulted in "constructive discharge," i.e., every day was such a shit sandwich that she wasn't able to do her work. Returning under those conditions would be very bad for her. On a more important note: I wish this could have happened to Hannity. He's ten times worse than O'Reilly.

The reason Franken goes after O' Reilly is simple. it's because O'Reilly is a big, fat LIAR.

Forgive me if this has been brought up already, but I don't want to spend my morning reading about Bill O'Reilly. Has anyone considered that this is a ploy to get people to look away from the election, and that it will all go away quietly after Novemeber? I wouldn't put anything past the people who want Bush reelected.

I have heard this before, but the logic escapes me. Could you explain how you came to this conclusion?

Saw Trading Places the other day: whatever happened to Franken's old comedy partner Tom Davis?
According to the great SNL oral history LIVE FROM NEW YORK, Franken and Davis had a pretty acrimonious breakup in the late-80s/early-90s -- apparently their manager stole most of their money from them, plus Franken and Davis clashed over Davis's drug use. There's still some mutual affection, but they really can't work as a team again.

Mackris may not get a jury trial. There's no Constitutional right to a jury trial in cases in equity.
Mackris is asking for monetary damages in her lawsuit, which takes the case out of equity principles. Besides, I'm reasonably sure that New York, as have most states, eliminated the distinctions between equity and commonlaw courts a long, long time ago. She should get a jury trial if she requests one.

Tom Davis was on The Al Franken show a week or two ago, playing a Bush official who had left "to spend more time with his family"...until, on questioning, he admitted he had no family...but he did need to supervise painting his house...except he actually had no house...
etc.
Mildly funny. But it must hurt to see your old partner a star being asked to run for Senate in Minnesota.
