This is way off topic, but if someone here has read something similar to the following I would like to know the source. I am nearly certain that I have read it before, but when I googled it I came up with nothing. It appeared in a column in a local paper and I believe it is plagiarized from another source. I know the editor and he would not appreciate plagiarism so it would be nice to be able to prove the deception.

It is basically an article about voting "for America". Though it doesn't mention Bush by name, the implication is very clear.

It starts off :
“What do you see when you think of America? Do we envision a small child on his father’s shoulders waving an American flag during a Fourth of July Parade or do we see a parade of protestors fighting for yet another ‘right’ that they claim?”
It goes on like this for several mind-numbing paragraphs, mostly trying to make a link between religion and the founding fathers, and decrying the the fact that God has lost “his rightful place at the head of our nation”.

I apologize for the double post.

In Riverside, CA, on a single block three Kerry yard signs disappeared overnight (the BCO4 sign next door was untouched).

Same day, in Orange County, I was parked in a parking structure in Costa Mesa. My car sports both "Re-Defeat Bush" and KE signs. When I returned to my car 45 minutes later, some douchebag had pasted a BC04 sticker on my drivers' side window (since my signs were on the inside surface of the windows, could not easily be defaced).

Thanks, BCO4 douchebags. I am kicking another $50 to the DNC in your honor.

O'Reilly sells his Irishness. His target viewer is the 50 year old ex Marine in Nasau County who screams at his TV and hates Hillary Clinton.

If he had a WASPY persona like William F. Buckley (also an Irish Catholic) his act wouldn't be the same.

I've just found out about some seriously jacked up stuff regarding Halliburton and Iraq in general. We've got to start an email and phone campaign to get the media to cover this stuff. I love Steve for cheering me up after that depressing Suskind article you directed us to, Atrios.

Gilliard seems to be saying that because the woman was dismissed, and she can add wrongful firing to the complaint, she can depose other women at Fox about being harrassed, on the legal theory that there was a harrassment-friendly culture at Fox.

And she can depose women from earlier phases of Bill's career.

In other words, this can turn into a fishing expedition as big as the Arkansas project, if her lawyer cares to take it that far.

Embarrassment for years and years for the bully, and heaven knows what scandals-in-waiting lurk at Fox.

I happened to finally watch Outfoxed today -- well, inspired to stop procrastinating because of this story, really -- and O'Reilly's treatment of Glickman really was atrocious.

Funniest thing: he went to Franken's lawyer to sue for defamation. But the lawyer said he had to prove O'Reilly knew he was lying, which was difficult because of one thing: O'Reilly lies constantly.

Franken couldn't help laughing as he pointed out that a pattern of pathological lying is a great defense against slander.

O'Reilly must be mortified by this thing. The specificity of her complaints almost guarantees she recorded the calls and perhaps the in-person harrassment.

Tapes. Lovely.

Man, $98G a year salary for being just one of O'Reilly's producers? Good gig.

Except you have to put up with harrassing assholes.

Interestingly, Franken is mostly somber and terse on the subject, even with O'Reilly's thuggish threat toward him revealed in the complaint.

Although he's started statements with "O'Reilly--" and Catherine has yelled at him, "high road, high road!"

It must be hard.

(a) POLICY-

(1) ACCESS TO STUDENT RECRUITING INFORMATION- Notwithstanding section 444(a)(5)(B) of the General Education Provisions Act and except as provided in paragraph (2), each local educational agency receiving assistance under this Act shall provide, on a request made by military recruiters or an institution of higher education, access to secondary school students names, addresses, and telephone listings.

(2) CONSENT- A secondary school student or the parent of the student may request that the student's name, address, and telephone listing described in paragraph (1) not be released without prior written parental consent, and the local educational agency or private school shall notify parents of the option to make a request and shall comply with any request.

(3) SAME ACCESS TO STUDENTS- Each local educational agency receiving assistance under this Act shall provide military recruiters the same access to secondary school students as is provided generally to post secondary educational institutions or to prospective employers of those students.

(b) NOTIFICATION- The Secretary, in consultation with the Secretary of Defense, shall, not later than 120 days after the date of enactment of the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001, notify principals, school administrators, and other educators about the requirements of this section.

(c) EXCEPTION- The requirements of this section do not apply to a private secondary school that maintains a religious objection to service in the Armed Forces if the objection is verifiable through the corporate or other organizational documents or materials of that school.

(d) SPECIAL RULE- A local educational agency prohibited by Connecticut State law (either explicitly by statute or through statutory interpretation by the State Supreme Court or State Attorney General) from providing military recruiters with information or access as required by this section shall have until May 31, 2002, to comply with that requirement.

Exactly. This is the only fully-funded provision in the No Child Left Behind act. That's how the act will lead to job creation - and how it can be invoked as the answer to low wage jobs. The rest of NCLB is bereft of funding (like IDEA for special ed) and is simply another drain on state budgets - and the states are allowed to set the standards for what "left behind" means, so that part is pointless as well. As they run out of money, you can count on the states to gut educational standards and measurements in order to "comply" with NCLB. The whole thing is a cruel joke and is the "accomplishment" Bush used to answer almost every domestic question.

Until the mid-19th century, most Americans would have adamantly refused to say a loyalty oath to the flag "and to the republic for which it stands." It wasn't until the depression of the 1890s, when capitalist elites were menaced by Populism, Coxey's Army, the Pullman strike, and a militant labor/socialist movement, that this bizarre official ideology was cobbled up as a way of getting the peoples' minds right.

Thanks to a century of the government schools' propaganda, most people have no idea how radical a break this was with the skeptical, anti-authoritarian American mindset of earlier years.

As you'r a Brit living in Asia, you may not be aware of the strong push among parents of high-school age students, especially on the East Coast, to have that portion of the law changed. It's been going on for at least two years. It's incredibly distressing. There is an opt-out mechanism, but the student must request it him- or herself.

Of course, since the SCLM never mentions it, one might assume that, yes, no one gives a boot and that we Democrats are all passive.

But that assumption would be incorrect.

UN security council Resolution 1483 required that US use Iraqi funds "in a TRANSPARENT manner to meet the humanitarian needs of the Iraqi people and for other persons benefitting the people of Iraq".

The Defense dept has until Nov. 5 to turn over records, deposits, withdrawls, documents, contracts, spreadsheets, memos, emails, etc. etc. etc. They of course can stall by submitting a letter saying they have a good reason not to comply by that date and the election will be over by then.

Thankyou Mr. Waxman and Mr. Shays.

Here's hoping the committee on Government Reform will be allowed to accomplish much in the coming year.

Mackris may not get a jury trial. There's no Constitutional right to a jury trial in cases in equity. I'm pretty sure NY doesn't give you a jury automatically for equity cases, either. If so, and if it goes that far, Fox will go for the bench trial. Her bigger problem is that she returned to work w/O'Falafel. Did the harassment start before -- or after -- she returned? I hope it was after. In hostile environment cases, plaintiff must prove that the environment was so bad that it resulted in "constructive discharge," i.e., every day was such a shit sandwich that she wasn't able to do her work. Returning under those conditions would be very bad for her. On a more important note: I wish this could have happened to Hannity. He's ten times worse than O'Reilly.

According to the great SNL oral history LIVE FROM NEW YORK, Franken and Davis had a pretty acrimonious breakup in the late-80s/early-90s -- apparently their manager stole most of their money from them, plus Franken and Davis clashed over Davis's drug use. There's still some mutual affection, but they really can't work as a team again.

Mackris is asking for monetary damages in her lawsuit, which takes the case out of equity principles. Besides, I'm reasonably sure that New York, as have most states, eliminated the distinctions between equity and commonlaw courts a long, long time ago.
