Just from watching the limited news coverage here in Iraq, its as if the GOP crew has stopped trying to come up with credible answers to any question -- lying has become second nature to these bozo's. Case in point was the only 1% increase in the defeciet that Bush claims happened on his watch during the debates. The strategy has to be that you can claim anything and nothing will stick to you as long as you come up with a bigger lie before the last one can be checked. It amazes me people (and many people in the military) are still being fooled by this clown. What this country needs is the equivalent of the British PM meeting with Parliment -- would very like to see Bush (or any Prez) answer questions that take more than studied responses to bluff your way through. Thanks for letting me vent, I feel better.

Sadly, many of the people I know in managerial positions lie about things that happened to them. I once ran across my best friend's resume and didn't read the name until the end. I couldn't figure out whose it was. What is she doing now?
She is the Director of Environmental Quality Control at the IBM plant in Bromont, Quebec and has been for 10 years.
Many other manager types I know do the same thing. It seems it's the way to get ahead in the world.

The pieces of the puzzle begin to come together: the "voluntary" community service, the additional flight time logged in a two-seater 102 after qualification, the refusal to submit to a physical exam requiring drug testing (blood & urine), the statements of Bush replacement's widow about Lt. Col. Killian's criticisms of Bush's performance (landing was a problem). "High on Cocaine, Driving that Plane, Georgie, better watch your speed."

Actually, you'd be surprised at the amount of bullshit that Blair can come up with. But it's much more obvious. For instance, on Wednesday -- you'll see the re-run on Sunday's CSPAN schedule -- Blair completely side-stepped the questions from Charles Kennedy about previous commitments to ensure British tactical control over British units in Iraq.
Blair basically answered a completely different question. But that was obvious, and the press called him on it within hours.

Remember how Scotty got prickly when asked about community service by Helen Thomas this past April?
Remember the Salon piece reporting an old Bush confidant who'd said that Bush needed to get out of Texas and to AL because he'd been too wild?
And lastly, if Bush can talk about 1973, why can't we?

Slightly OT, but at least having to do with Bush:
This week on Whad'Ya Know, Michael Feldman interviewed Maureen Dowd. A couple of her remarks stuck in my mind, but not enough for these to be exact quotations.
"Most presidents live in a bubble, but this one is in a Thermos."
"One Bush went into Iraq to show that you can't invade another country unilaterally. The other one went into Iraq to show that you can."
Eventually the interview will be online at http://notmuch.com, second hour. Also check out the first hour, in which Michael Feldman interviews Michael Feldman regarding his latest book. Yes, he did read the book before interviewing himself.

Tena
My theory too, Tena.
Chronology goes like this.
Bush and James Bath were busted with coke in March/April 72. Around that time, his flying skills went down due to drug/alcohol abuse and was flying
trainer craft and even simulators.
Poppy wanted him out of the state before he can fix the drug charge. Hence he went to Alabama in June/July 72. His boss Killian wanted him to take physical ahead of his scheduled date (birthday) because he heard/suspected that Bush was on drugs. Bush could have taken physical by being clean for a week but he didn't want to take chances. So sacrificed his TANG service. He was back in TX in Dec72/Jan73. By that time, his case was fixed by poppy, he was asked to do 3 or 6 months of community service, which he did at PULL. His records were sealed. I guess in Texas, criminal records for even adults can be sealed, if they have a pull.
One could piece all this together just by reading blogs for the last year or so.

Hmm. Bush did his "non-voluntary" work at P.U.L.L. in Houston, while still being paid by the T.A.N.G. Then, he gets his early discharge, with a still-cryptic notation that he's somehow unfit for duty.
Anyone check to see if there were any courts-martial (or even more likely, non-criminal administrative discipline) proceedings in the military justice systemagainst Bush around 72-73? Maybe people have been snooping around for this "conviction" in the wrong court system entirely . . .

Michael - I think that's pretty much it. Wasn't there some speculation in the blogosphere about some of the code on Bush's military records? I vaguely recall someone trying to make noise that a combination of letters and numbers signalled that Bush had been discharged less than honorably.
As far as expunging records - anyone who has been convicted of a crime in Texas can petition to have his record expunged. It isn't necessarily easy to have it granted, but it would have been for Poppy. In fact, it probably would have all been done very quietly and quickly back in 72, 73.

Hi all -- In watching the electorl map/polling the last few weeks, I hve generally thought (as many have suggested) that if Kerry wins OH and PA, he'd be a sure bet. Obviously that may still be true, but there seems to be an undercurrent now that if Bush takes Florida (and who among us doesn't think that state is fixed for Bush), he may have enough strength in WI and IA, and maybe MN, to win w/o Ohio.
I live in MN, am doing what I can, and fell MN will, when push comes to shove, go Kerry's way. But this WI-IA possibility for Bush has me a bit worried. If Kerry needs PA, OH, AND FL to win, it could be a long night.

A Bush pre-election strike on Iran 'imminent'
White House insider report "October Surprise" imminent
By Wayne Madsen
According to White House and Washington Beltway insiders, the Bush administration, worried that it could lose the presidential election to Senator John F. Kerry, has initiated plans to launch a military strike on Iran's top Islamic leadership, its nuclear reactor at Bushehr on the Persian Gulf, and key nuclear targets throughout the country, including the main underground research site at Natanz in central Iran and another in Isfahan. Targets of the planned U.S. attack reportedly include mosques in Tehran, Qom, and Isfahan known by the U.S. to headquarter Iran's top mullahs.
The Iran attack plan was reportedly drawn up after internal polling indicated that if the Bush administration launched a so-called anti-terrorist attack on Iran some two weeks before the election, Bush would be assured of a landslide win against Kerry. Reports of a pre-emptive strike on Iran come amid concerns by a number of political observers that the Bush administration would concoct an "October Surprise" to influence the outcome of the presidential election.
According to White House sources, the USS John F. Kennedy was deployed to the Arabian Sea to coordinate the attack on Iran. Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld discussed the Kennedy's role in the planned attack on Iran when he visited the ship in the Arabian Sea on October 9. Rumsfeld and defense ministers of U.S. coalition partners, including those of Albania, Azerbaijan, Bahrain, Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Georgia, Hungary, Iraq, Latvia, Lithuania, Macedonia, Mongolia, Poland, Qatar, Romania, and Ukraine briefly discussed a very "top level" view of potential dual-track military operations in Iran and Iraq in a special "war room" set up on board the aircraft carrier.
America's primary ally in Iraq, the United Kingdom, did not attend the planning session because it reportedly disagrees with a military strike on Iran. London also suspects the U.S. wants to move British troops from Basra in southern Iraq to the Baghdad area to help put down an expected surge in Sh'ia violence in Sadr City and other Sh'ia areas in central Iraq when the U.S. attacks Iran as well as clear the way for a U.S. military strike across the Iraqi-Iranian border aimed at securing the huge Iranian oil installations in Abadan. U.S. allies South Korea, Australia, Kuwait, Jordan, Italy, Netherlands, and Japan were also left out of the USS John F. In addition, Israel has been supplied by the United States with 500 "bunker buster" bombs. It's not about the coke or the youthful indiscretion, either. It's about the hypocrisy of Bush approving of other people getting caught and having their lives ruined for something he got away with repeatedly.

there is absolutely no hard evidence that Bush was busted for drugs.
A far better explanation is that Bush was "assigned" to Project Pull by higher ups in the Texas Air National Guard.
Bush was paid for 17 days of service between May 1 and June 7, 1973, and 19 more days of service between July 2 and July 30, 1973. These include 28 days on "active duty" that was ordered on four different "active duty orders". These orders were issued on the letterhead/forms of the 147th Fighter Interceptor Group, and were all signed "for the commander" by an Asst Admin. Officer named Billy Lamar.
But the COMMANDER of the 147th, Bobby Hodges, has NO RECOLLECTION of Bush every returning to ellington Air Force base after he left for Alabama in May 1972. And the personnel officer of the 147th, Rufus T. Martin, thought that Bush had "finished out his last year" in Alabama.

I don't think that even this administration would attack Iran's leadership for short term political gain. I know they are shameless, but would they risk an immediate all out war with Iran? Because that's what would happen if they targeted Iran's leadership. This would probably be followed by impeachment because the attack would be so blatantly political and lead to so much bloodshead.
That said, they and/or Israel might attack Iran's nukes program.

Tena, I really have encountered a number of scared people. We're talking prosperous, smart folks whose first reaction to any alarming news event nowadays is to assume that terrorists are behind it. you misspelled "I am a pathetic dittohead who masturbates to Ann Coulter covers, has his mommy dress him, and is behind on his GOPoints with only ten days to go.".
1. What are "Ann Coulter covers"? Has she done an album of other people's songs or something?
2. If my mom dressed me, I'd look a lot better than I do now.
3. I'm way behind on my "GOPoints", because I've never heard that term before, and I haven't supported a Republican in an election since, um, the 2001 Philly DA election.
But to return to the subject at hand, do you disagree with my assertion that both Kerry and Bush support the war on drugs? It seems pretty uncontroversial to me.

I live in Astoria, NY, right across the river from Manhattan. I have a 21-year-old daughter that works in the city every day. My 13-year-old goes to middle school here. I (and those who I love) am on public transportation every day.
I am not afraid of terrorists. I am never in fear on the subways.
However, I have nightmares every night that Bush will be elected.
This would probably be followed by impeachment because the attack would be so blatantly political and lead to so much bloodshead.
Oh, you mean like the way impeachment followed the blatantly political attack on Iraq that has led to so much bloodshed? There will be no impeachment for anything Bush does as long as the wingnut Republicans control the House of Representatives.

Hersh talked about a call he had gotten from a first lieutenant in charge of a unit stationed halfway between Baghdad and the Syrian border. His group was bivouacking outside of town in an agricultural area, and had hired 30 or so Iraqis to guard a local granary. A few weeks passed. They got to know the men they hired, and to like them. Then orders came down from Baghdad that the village would be "cleared." Another platoon from the soldier's company came and executed the Iraqi granary guards. All of them.
"He said they just shot them one by one. And his people, and he, and the villagers of course, went nuts," Hersh said quietly. "He was hysterical, totally hysterical. He went to the company captain, who said, 'No, you don't understand, that's a kill. We got 36 insurgents. Don't you read those stories when the Americans say we had a combat maneuver and 15 insurgents were killed?'

I don't think that even this administration would attack Iran's leadership for short term political gain.
I don't think it will be Iran, either.
Bush's handlers have a bit of an idea that they need to get Iraq secured, that he's become far too vulnerable about the situation there. The internals are showing that people are getting more and more fed up with it, it's hurting. A lot. So they have to get control there, before they can con the public into going after Iraq. So guess what?
Here in San Antonio, AKA Military City, USA, there are rumbles about what's coming down the pike, from some people who would know.
What I keep hearing them talk about is a "massive" offensive into Fallujah; apparently, the thinking from Bush & his enablers is that, if Fallujah can be tamed, once and for all, the rest of Iraq can be controlled (I know, I know, but this has been the word for about two weeks now from the military community.
It's stupid, but I wouldn't put it past them to level Fallujah in the next week or two.

Had a nice conversation with an undecided woman who is petrified of terrorism, well-informed, just the sort who would be an enthusiastic Kerry supporter, but for that petrified of terrorism, maybe we shouldn't change right now, thing. (Patient twenty-minute conversation about accountability followed, urging her to consider how bad Bush's security team has been.) Funny, but my town was last visited by terrorists, of a sort, in 1780. The only way to play this game is one voter at a time, listening to them, and responding with the clear fact that a) Bush has failed b) we won't.

This part from the K-R story is key, and is not quoted here or at TPM:
"George had to sign in and out - I remember his signature was a hurried cursive - but he wasn't an employee. He was not a volunteer either," she said. "John said he had to keep track of George's hours because George had to put in a lot of hours because he was in trouble."
It's a detail that someone would remember and not likely make up-- he had to account for his hours even though he was not an employee and wasn't being paid by PULL. This strongly suggests that he was assigned a precise number of hours that he had to account and sign for. Back then, judges had enormous discretion, especially for well-connected miscreants. Judges could offer military service in lieu of jail time--no small thing during the Vietnam war--or quietly sentence the scion of a prominent, rich well-connected old boy to volunteer work.
Just to cut through the bullshit--Bush was using coke, IMHO. That's why he suddenly refused to take a flight physical in 1972--the first year the physical included a drug test--and what he got busted and sentenced to PULL for. Know the name of the other pilot from the same unit who refused a flight physical that summer? Bush's party buddy James R. Bath, who later was the Texas money manager for the Bin Laden family and an investor in Dubya's first failed company, Arbusto.

We're on the verge of establishing quite a precedent -- namely, that a presidential candidate's criminal record doesn't merit exhaustive investigation and full disclosure.
Frankly, it's just too close to the election to be news now, unless someone really brings home the bacon.
Let's hope more details surface before the election makes it all moot. The press has already rationalized why this isn't news.
The editors and reporters I've corresponded with seem very comfortable with not investigating this further. But they want to be the first ones to learn the truth -- if anyone cares to share it with them.

I think someone made reference to this upstream. The Bush military records released F.,10/15 gave a discharge code of PTI 961. This means Bush was kicked out of the TANG as "unfit to serve" although it doesn't indicate the exact details as to why. http://www.glcq.com/pti_961.htm
The Pentagon knows exactly where Osama is hanging out in Pakistan. Go on over to http://www.talkleft.com & page down to "Pentagon Knows Where Osama is Hiding" to see the details.

I bet there's a real real real good chance that Hatfield guy was murdered by Bush family operatives.
Thye Bush family has numerous sus[icious deaths associated with them, including a number of "suicides" by
previously non-suicidal people who crossed/went against the family in some way, and suddenly "just had" to take their lives for some reason.
Also, Clifford Baxter (Enron exec who might have blown the whistle had he lived) died the same way.
Part 4 should be done within the next few days.

At the time in question, Texas had a particularly humane procedure in its criminal law.
It was called "deferred adjudication."
A miscreant would plead guilty to a given charge. The court would conditionally accept the plea.
If a first offense, the miscreant would probably be placed on probation. If all conditions of probation were met, the miscreant could come back to court (after two years or one-third, whichever was less, of the period of probation had passed), and move to reopen the matter.
The court then had the authority to set aside the conviction and dismiss the indictment (or complaint, in the case of a misdemeanor).
But the case was still a matter of public record.
One further step. A conscientious lawyer would then file a petition to have the miscreant's records expunged. Upon proper proof, a court would grant the relief, and an order would go out to a surprisingly large nunmber of law enforcement agencies, including the FB and I, to destroy the miscreants records and remove his or her identity from data bases.
The records would be erased, and if sought, could not be found. They no longer existed. They were not sealed, as has been suggested. They simply no longer existed.
This was the law which well served many of my clients up to the time I retired in 1987.
It is most reasonable to believe that George was busted, probably for coke, that Poppy's phalanx of lawyers then leaped to the fore and did exactly what I have outlined. This is why there are no records.
The objection has been raised in other fora that at the time, there was no formal community service requirement in Harris County (Houston).
Nonsense. Formalities aside, a district judge sure had the authority to order a probationer to help keep the streets clean, help out at the public library, or to read to the kids at a given school - all as a condition of probation.
Perhaps this is why George kept staring off into space after he was told of the September 11 tragedy - he may have been reliving his days as a probationer, when he first learned to be a volunteer (although under judicial fiat), instead of facing the discomforts of the real world.

You know, this is sad. Bush made mistakes, he then did volunteer work for this organization(most likely required, but that's neither here nor there), and by some accounts did connect with the poor kids served by the organization. About 13 years later he officially got "saved", which ought to consist of feeling oneself a sinner and inadequate in the face of God, and also recognizing that we are all sinners together and ought to help each other and have compassion for each other.
It seems that perhaps he got closer at age 27 than age 40 and later. If so, sad.
