In a last flurry of flailing desperation, Bush -- at Rove's command -- is pretending to be over-confident. Rove believes that people want to vote for a winner, so you pretend that you're winning even if -- especially if -- you're tanking. FBI chases new leads on election attack plot, as CIA source discredited
(10-23) 13:54 PDT WASHINGTON (AP) -- FBI investigators have made new arrests and developed leads that reinforce concerns that terrorists plan to strike around the presidential election, officials said Saturday, even though the CIA has discredited a person who told its agents of such a plot involving al-Qaida.
A senior FBI official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said some of the leads were culled from interviews with thousands of individuals that agents have conducted in the Muslim community.
The official would not be more specific, but said the FBI continues to have misgivings about possible al-Qaida intentions to launch an attack with the goal of affecting the elections.
Several people have been taken into custody recently on charges not related to terrorism, but officials are investigating whether they may have been involved in terror activities, said another law enforcement official, speaking on condition of anonymity.
As for the person who warned the CIA, at least some of that individual's reporting no longer is seen as credible, said a U.S. intelligence official, speaking on condition of anonymity. The official stressed, however, that a number of other sources point to terrorist activity around the election season.
The official also said no concrete plot has been discovered so far with specific mention of time, place, method or identity of would-be attackers.

What's pissing me off is how polls are reported. Headlines with "Bush Pulls Ahead!" are showing a five-point lead for Bush in a Time poll - among 800 *likely* voters.
They conveniently fail to report the polling results for the 1100 *registered* voters.
And they don't mention what the margin of error is - if it's within that five point spread (yes, even among *likely* voters), it's still tied.

I sent AP the following e-mail. The Jennifer Kerr article about the rounding of up American Muslims and "interviewing them" is a work of art worthy of Goebbels. The Ministry of Propaganda extols the latest fine work of the Gestapo.

The official also said no concrete plot has been discovered so far with specific mention of time, place, method or identity of would-be attackers.
James Carafano, a homeland security expert with the conservative think tank Heritage Foundation, said there's little doubt that al-Qaida wants to send a message with an attack.
"I think they're probably less concerned with affecting the outcome of the election, whether Bush or Kerry wins, but it would be more prestigious, the capability to do something before the election and really undermine the confidence of the United States," he said.
Top government officials have warned since the spring about al-Qaida's desire to attack during the election with the hope of orchestrating something similar to the March commuter train bombings in Madrid. The bombings, which killed more than 190 people, were a factor in the ouster of Spain's former ruling party.
The FBI has partnered with American Muslims and others as part of what the agency describes as a prevention plan aimed at disrupting an attack. Thousands of agents from bureaus across the country are participating in the effort.

Bigvic, et al:
Caca! Here's the story, cuz it ain't linking. I apologize to all beleaguered parties:
Cheney: World Would Be Worse With Kerry
FARMINGTON, N.M. - The Soviet Union might still exist and Saddam Hussein might control the Persian Gulf and possess nuclear weapons had Democrat John Kerry been president when the United States faced those regimes, Vice President Dick Cheney said Saturday.
"I think it's a good thing that he wasn't in charge," Cheney said.
Kerry asserted Friday that had he been president during the war in Afghanistan, terrorist leader Osama bin Laden would be in captivity or dead. The Democratic nominee has long criticized President Bush for abandoning the pursuit of the alleged mastermind of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks so that U.S. forces could invade Iraq and topple Saddam.
Contending that the Massachusetts senator was "claiming that the world would be a whole lot better if he had been president," Cheney suggested to supporters at a rally that he believed the world would be far worse off.
"Let's go back to the 1970s when John Kerry was saying that we should only deploy U.S. troops under the authority of the United Nations," the vice president said, citing a statement Kerry made in 1970 after returning from Vietnam service. "One way the world might look if he had been in charge is, we would have ceded our right to defend ourselves to the United Nations."
Cheney said Kerry campaigned for the Senate on a platform of opposing major weapons systems that, during the Reagan administration, helped win the Cold War. "So if John Kerry had been in charge, maybe the Soviet Union would still be in business," the vice president said.
Kerry voted against going to war in the Persian Gulf in 1991 after Saddam had invaded Kuwait. "So if John Kerry had been in charge, Saddam might well control the Persian Gulf today," Cheney said. "After the Gulf War, international inspectors judged that Saddam would have been armed with nuclear weapons by the early '90s. So not only would Saddam control a crucial part of the Middle East, he might well have nuclear weapons."
Cheney said Kerry recently contended that the United States must pass "some kind of global test before we could take military action" and assured supporters "the president and I know better than that." However, Kerry actually said the "global test" would come after the United States had taken pre-emptive action and has vowed never to allow another country to determine how the United States would defend itself.

"But credit where credit is due. The skank can shift ass on a dime.
When a pair of hooligans tried to attack her with pies during a speaking appearance, an episode broadcast on cable news today, Coulter didn't freeze like a deer in the headlights. She showed lightning reflexes, ducking away from the lectern and running backstage on high heels, which any woman will tell you is difficult to do. Because of her quick getaway, the flying pies wildly missed their target, sparing her a humiliating cream pie bukkake facial that would have made the papers and been downloaded millions of times on the internet.
Perhaps she was a dodgeball champion in school, or perhaps her nerves are so permanently on edge she can sense danger while the rest of us are in our usual fog. One can only conjecture. Minimum wage may very well be next, and I wouldn't rule out child labor laws either. These guys are targeting the whole of the New Deal, which gave us the 40 hour workweek, social security, and end to child labor, worker protection -- in other words damn near every facet of what anyone who works for a living would think of as the modern world. They want to take us back to the economic model of roughly 1890.
Problem is, this model failed spectacularly in 1929. And it pretty much failed globally. The two most noteworthy responses to it were the New Deal (boo! hisssss!) and... fascism (uh... yay?)
As for enlisting 8-year olds, my daughter who is 11 asked me if it was possible to lower the draft age below 18. She seems to realize that women as well as men are going to get drafted the way things are going. I wouldn't rule it out, I told her. If we get the right number of idiots in Congress, I wouldn't put it past them to lower the age of consent if that was the only way to feed the militaristic beast. I know at one time it was possible to enlist at 17 -- maybe they'll lower that as well.
Common sense and common decency are not going to act as a bar to the ambitions of these unscrupulous people.

And they don't mention what the margin of error is - if it's within that five point spread (yes, even among *likely* voters), it's still tied.
no, it's not. a lead in a poll is a lead in a poll. A poll is not an error-prone measurement of the entire population; it's an exact result for the particular people surveyed, at the particular times you asked them.
what there is uncertainty about is how well the particular individuals polled represent the rest of the population. The MoE is an attempt to quantify that uncertainty, under the assumption that the sample (the choice of the particular 1000 or so people you talked to) is unbiased.

I think if Kerry wins, the story vis-a-vis political history will be, "2004: The Year Democrats Learned to Fight Smart".
It's the power of the Internet. The Sinclair thing is a case study -- Media Matters kicked the whole thing off, everyone was kept informed by Atrios, JMM, Kos, et al. and the Sinclair Boycott website, compete with an advertiser database as made in, what? 24 hours? The turnaround time was amazing. It took less than a week for everyone to put so much pressure on them that the entire corporation caved. Think about it. Everyone, collectively, served Rove a 145 MPH Andy Roddick heater straight into his eyeball. Props to us.
And liberals will just get better and better at this type of fast turnaround action and other war room tactics.

Just Curious-
My Local Paper (SF Chron) has an article front page about heavily armed SWAT police patrolling the train system to prevent "terrorist attacks" in the run-up to the election. Is this going on in other cities? Is someone trying to put us on edge? The article doesn't say who made the decision to start the patrols, but it smacks of being afraid of wolves!

senator byrd, once again, is standing up for the constitution and bravely bucking 9/11 commission recommendations:
"Let us remember that intelligence--remember, this is not just Robert Byrd saying this--let us remember that the intelligence was manipulated to get us into the Iraq war. Will it not be more easily manipulated in the hands of one intelligence chief, a partisan chief more free than ever to tweak intelligence to please a President? It may be a Democratic President. Does that make it any better? No. That makes no difference. It is comforting to believe that our intelligence agencies will not be manipulated for political gain, but it is also naive to believe that. To turn over to a greater degree the power of the purse to shadowy figures in the intelligence community is to invite abuses like those that lead to scandal and to the disgrace of the United States in the eyes of the international community."
[...]
"The larger concern is not only that the Congress, in its rush to act, may botch the implementation of the 9/11 Commission's recommendation, but that those recommendations may not be as well-thought-out as the public relations campaign would have us believe. We are so threatened by the politics surrounding the 9/11 Commission's report and the release of its recommendations prior to the Presidential election that we stand ready--stand, salute--to abdicate our constitutional responsibilities rather than to question or probe deeper into the potential flaws of the Commission's recommendations. "

Hey, Atrios:
NY Times: "The president would say that he relied on his ''gut'' or his ''instinct'' to guide the ship of state, and then he ''prayed over it.''
So I guess it's not a doctrine, it's the "Bush Latrine"!
Bush is campaigning like victory is imminent, he is going for the landslide.
Yeah, and the crazy guy on the street corner last week with a sign that said the world would end last Friday was also "campaigning like victory was imminent".
He is going to states that have been Democratic strongholds for decades. Kerry is desperate, still trying to convince his own base, wasting time in states he should have locked up months ago.

more from byrd:
[...]
"Also, consider this Constitution and the oath I have taken this many times to support and defend the Constitution of the United States. This Constitution provides for adequate oversight. It gives the Congress the power, the oversight. This bill will, to a considerable extent, take away that power. I am not seeking to undermine the intelligence reforms proposed by the Governmental Affairs Committee. I seek only to ensure that the Congress retain its oversight functions in intelligence and national security matters. We owe it to the people who had faith and confidence in us and who sent us here. "
[...]
"We owe it to the victims of the September 11 attack and their families to get these reforms straight and to take time to study and debate them. Why not take more time? It would be a sad legacy if the suffering of these victims of the September 11 attack, it would be a sad legacy if their suffering and loss resulted not in the strengthening but in the weakening of our national security and intelligence service, leaving more Americans vulnerable to a terrorist attack. In summary, it is a critical mistake to hand to an unelected intelligence chief nearly unfettered budget transfer authority. We are handing off the ability to exercise oversight. When we do that, we cannot determine whether congressional intent for the people's tax dollars has been met. We will not know about transfers until some time, perhaps, after the fact. Millions of dollars--nay, billions of dollars--could be moved around at the discretion of one man, an unelected figure, with no one the wiser. Resources could be switched from one area of the world to another area of the globe at the discretion of one man. Secret operations could be funded without the prior knowledge of any Member of Congress at the discretion of one man. This is one-man rule. Intelligence could be manipulated by one man, with discretion concerning where to take away secret resources and where to add them. Absolute power, Senators just heard, corrupts absolutely, and the United States is about to aid and abet that truism. Senators, Republicans and Democrats, we will rue the day when, because of rushing and posturing and hurrying, we created a spy chief with such awesome power."

Why are we pussy-footing around the real issue: Bush is dumber than a bag of dryer lint! He is a hollow little man being lead around by the deaf and dumb. All of you neo-cons on this board need to admit that Iraq was a big fucking mistake. Not only did the U.S. not find any WMDs, but we made Al-Qaida stronger by driving Zarqawi into a unholy alliance with Bin Laden. Does Bush not know who the imminent threat is or does he simply not want to know? We're in a real mess and we need the "adults" to get us out. I think a war time president needs to have served in war time and that's why I'm voting for Kerry.

Has anyone looked at the business tax overhaul that Mr. Bush quietly signed late Friday on Air Force One.
It may do more damage to the American economy than the 2002 tax cut and the Iraq war combined.
We should congratulate ourselves about Sinclair. But the real damage is caused by Mr. Bush's economic pornography.
Like the traditional Friday night document dumps, there has not been much in the news about this. Perhaps we should focus on this.

Steve F, thanks for that bit of history on Millar....he's also the guy who brought New England the Cowboy Up mantra from last year. And, after this years win against the Yankees to clinch the ACLS series, I heard him on the radio talking about how the Red Sox have a great "controlled" swagger on and off the field. I started to barf because I immediately associated his words and actions with something Dubya would say and act.
Now normally, I am not against anything Texan or southern or anything having to do with swaggers, but due to my stong aversion to Cowboy Texan swaggering Dubya, this native New Englander and Red Sox fan was really turned off by it all. So I agree if there has to be a Bill Buckner award...Millar sounds like a great candidate for it.

Ohio Provisional Ballot Ruling Reversed
CINCINNATI - A federal appeals court on Saturday ruled to reverse a lower court's ruling that Ohio voters could cast provisional ballots on Election Day anywhere in the county in which they are registered.
AP Photo
The 6th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals (news - web sites) ruled that a provisional ballot cast outside a voter's home precinct isn't valid, agreeing with Ohio Secretary of State Kenneth Blackwell.
Federal law allows people to get provisional ballots if they are in the right jurisdiction. Blackwell, a Republican, defines that as a precinct, while Democrats say it's the voter's county.
The state's Democrats had filed a lawsuit challenging Blackwell's directive instructing county elections boards not to give ballots to voters who come to the wrong precinct and to send them to the correct polling place on Election Day.
U.S. District Judge James Carr on Oct. 14 blocked the directive, ruling that Ohio voters who show up at the wrong polling place still can cast ballots as long as they are in the county where they are registered.
Blackwell appealed to the 6th Circuit.

Isreal bombs Iranian nuke sites. plausible?
I don't think so. From what I've read, there are going to be one or two more rounds of diplomacy before the bombing commences. The Israelis are too smart to do it before the election, they would immediately be slapped down by Europe. I'm sure they really don't want to tangle with a nuclear power like Iran (let's face it: they have nukes) before an election with so many unknowns.
After the election, if Bush wins...that's another story.

Okay-little pick-me-up for ya. . .
I live in Houston and I went to early vote on Monday morning, the very first hours they were open. Who should appear to cast their votes alongside the "commoners", but George I and Babs. We were asked by a poll worker if we would mind if they decided to rush them along in line ahead of all of us. The older woman next to me gave valiant, but understandably worthless protest. "Yes, we do mind." I offered that we knew we didn't really have a choice, but thanked him for asking. Not sure why, (maybe the obviously lame applause when they entered) they decided to wait in line, not to affect anyone's vote, mind you. Here's where it gets really interesting. When they finished and were leaving, they were supposed to hold a press conference out front of the polling place. Ladies and Gents, in Houston, TX, there were so many Kerry supporters out that they had to cancel the press conference and whisk them away. I kid you not.

there will be no landslide...
Bullshit. Like no one thought that might be a possible outcome.
The Dems are prepared, and the election is 10 days away.
I have a dear friend whose family came here as refugees from war-torn Lebanon. All 6 kids were educated and worked hard in the "American Dream". They were a good, strong, happy and productive family. Totally law-abiding, paid their taxes, had social security numbers, reported to the courts and Justice Departments every year for the finger prints and such and they followed all the rules and laws pertaining to their status here. For almost 18 years they sought counsel and then watched their money drained by immigration lawyers, always with the false hope that their green cards would be granted soon.
Six months after 9/11 -federal authorities and police came to their home in the early morning hours, handcuffed and arrested them (between 30 and 40 years old) while yelling and terrorizing their sickly parents, and put the kids in maximum security prisons. The parents were not allowed to see them and they were NEVER told the reason why they were arrested. No representation or court appearance of any form was allowed. All of their assets (home, cars, bank accounts - all legal) were taken from them without any reason given. All their neighbors and friends tried desparately through media and such to fight this "insanity" to no avail. Only after the US (FBI, Justice, etc..) completed their "investigation" six months later were they taken straight from prison and put on planes to Lebanon without cause. One month later the parents were sent home to Lebanon. Absolutely no reason, no paperwork, no commentary was given regarding their deportation. To this day they still do not know what they did wrong or why they were deported.
My friend was not with her family that day but living here in CA with her husband and children. She has spent every waking moment in fear - afraid to leave her home and frightened to death that she would be taken from her children. After the work of many, many friends here - lawyers, judges and immigration advocates and after almost 2 years of hiding, she has just informed that she may finally have her green card. Why do I share this story???
I witnessed first hand what I thought was only possible in Nazi Germany or a dictatorship. Oh yes, please make no mistake about it, Cheney, Bush, Ashcroft and Neocons all are evil people to be taken quite seriously and not laughed at as clowns.
My full blown contempt of this Administration began on that day and only increased in time. My patriotic naiveness also ended then when I realized for the first time that our freedoms and rights are not guaranteed but are quite open to infringement and subterfuge. If you had any doubts about casting a vote for John Kerry, please think of my friends and then multiply the numbers. I am sure that such events happended for many others as well over these past 3 years. Their (Bushistas) way of life must be voted out now!!!

Take 10 minutes between now and election day and ask yourself how far you are willing to go to protect and preserve our democracy.
No really--how far? Because they're going to try everything--every thing--to keep it. Remember, we witnessed a bloodless coup last election, and we have allowed ourselves to be ruled by an unelected fool.
Have you seen 1 single Republican speak out against the documented election-stealing going on now across the country? Just 1?
This crowd has already proved quite capable of allowing the 9/11 mass murder and creating the Iraq quagmire and still have nearly half the country believing their bullshit. What else do you think they're capable of?
But even more importantly, are you ready to fight for democracy with all you have? If not, don't worry, there won't even been an election in '08. They won't even have to pretend by then.
Kick ass, take names. No one is forgiven aften we win this one.

House Majority Leader Tom DeLay, increasing his local visibility in the face of ethics complaints and with an election just 11 days away, said in Houston on Friday that Democrats are vilifying him.
"I've never had a campaign where the entire nation has tried to destroy my name," DeLay said. "They are going after me in the most personal and vindictive way. It's gutter politics."
On Thursday DeLay was subpoenaed to testify in a lawsuit alleging he abused his power during last year's fight over congressional redistricting. His attorney filed a motion Friday asking a state district judge in Austin to throw out the subpoena, and DeLay said the deposition will not move forward.
"This is trying to criminalize politics," he said.

If John Kerry had been in charge, maybe a presidential daily briefing entitled "Bin Laden Determined to Strike in US" would have ACTUALLY BEEN READ AND ACTED ON BY THE FUCKING PRESIDENT!!!!
Out on a limb, watch out, I'm calling it right here and now:

Actually, as I've posted here before, Mr. Kate has been saying "Kerry in a landslide" ever since February. If he's right, he's going to be doing one spectacular Snoopy dance.

Don't know if anyone mentioned this on an earlier thread, but I just saw the funniest promo on Bravo. Scenes of warfare with a voiceover (paraphrasing): "The president lied to the American public and involved the U.S. military in a secret war. . ."
Then the action on screen freezes and the voiceover says "Just kidding, it's only a movie! Watch Harrison Ford in Clear and Present Danger . . ." I about pissed myself.
I know Bravo obviously skews left, but I still like to see them picking up the "lying to the American public" parallel.

"Take 10 minutes between now and election day and ask yourself how far you are willing to go to protect and preserve our democracy."
I've been doing that for months. I'm ready to fight and die for America -- not the real estate, but the principles. I don't think it comes to that, though. Sure, it might. But I don't think it will.
Instead, I think we're going to have to take a lot of cues from Martin Luther King's playbook. We're going to have to take to the streets en masse -- not to control them, but to block them. We're going to have to risk and even invite mass arrest -- clog the jails, clog the courts, clog the system.
We're going to have to follow the lead of Thoreau -- and refuse to underwrite the cost of our own oppression. You know what I'm talking about. Here again we're talking about jail. Here again, we have to do it on a scale that clogs the machine.
If we can't stop the bastards, we can sure as hell make 'em have to work for it.
And we're going to have to build on what we did with Sinclair. I'm not sure we can claim that as a success -- they aired their bullshit, after all. But we showed our displeasure through the one medium they cannot ignore -- the money. They always count the dollars, even as they're losing the votes.
So by all means, load up on guns, clubs and knives. But remember that's what they're expecting. Remember they think physical force solves all problems. They're not ready for the sheer goddam orneriness of the average American.
And their going to find out what the last batch of fascists found out the hard way: You underestimate the average American at your own peril.
We will bear any cost. But they are the ones who will ultimately be made to pay.

Nope,
Polls are NOT exact results based on the actual sample of people called. First, they ask a bunch of biased questions to narrow them down to "likely" voters. Then they use some more biased statistics to "weight" the results based on their assumptions of actual voter party identification. Ruy Teixeira's Donkey Rising blog gets into these details. I believe it was Mark Twain who said it: "There's lies, damn lies, and statistics."

Wow! Thanks for the story about George I and Babs -- amazing.
More anecdotal evidence: I was shopping today and the receptionist at the furniture store said, "I like your button; that's who I'm voting for." I did my usual "Are you registered and do you know where to go to vote?" routine and then got into a discussion w/ her. She's had 3 friends killed in Iraq. This is a young African American woman in Alexandria, VA. It hit me that I don't know anyone who's been killed in Iraq. This truly is a war for the poor and middle class of this country.
I swear you'd be surprised what just wearing a Kerry button can do -- it's really a good conversation starter. If we can stop them from stealing Florida and Ohio, Kerry will win.

You know, between the Wrepublican war chest and the Iraq qWagmire, Bu$hCo has funneled one helluva lot of money into private security/ intelligence/ mercenary firms.
Often these firms are run by ex-CIA and Special Forces men.
They've had a ripe recruiting ground in the Middle East.
Let's not forget what ex-Company men and republican partisans in the CIA and Defense departments did to Jimmy Carter.
We are going to be in business for a long time yet defusing this $yndicate, people.

Lest anyone doubt that James Maynard Keenan is the most brilliant bastard in music today, I offer the following lyrics - a big shout out to all the "faith based" Bush voters out there:
The Noose
So glad to see you well
Overcome and completely silent now
With heaven's help
You cast your demons out
And not to pull your halo down
Around your neck and tug you off your cloud
But I'm more than just a little curious
How you're plannin' to go about makin' your amends
To the dead
To the dead
Recall the deeds as if they're all
Someone else's
Atrocious stories
Now you stand reborn
Before us all
So glad to see you well
And not to pull your halo down
Around your neck and tug you to the ground
But I'm more than just a little curious
How you're plannin' to go about makin' your amends
To the dead
To the dead
With your halo slippin' down
Your halo slippin'
Your halo slippin' down
Your halo slippin' down
Your halo slippin' down
(I'm more than just a little curious
How you're plannin' to go about makin' your amends)
[repeated]
Your halo slippin' down
Your halo slippin' down to choke you now
My jaw just dropped when I listened to this CD - still replay it almost every day. IMO, once of the top 100 ever.
Of course, if Backslider is in here, gotta ask what you think ...

Frank Rich, in what we refer to as the Farts & Pleasures section, has dedicated his column to Baba O'Reilly and lesbians. And I quote:
"In the annals of election year 2004, Oct. 13 will be remembered as the day it rained lesbians in red America. That was when we learned that Andrea Mackris, an associate producer on "The O'Reilly Factor," had filed her sexual harassment law suit, charging that her boss had an obsessive interest in vibrators, phone sex and, most persistently, erotic scenarios involving pairs of women. That night brought the final presidential debate, in which John Kerry's description of Mary Cheney as a lesbian so riled the Bush-Cheney campaign, not to mention the easily aghast Washington press corps, you'd have thought the vice president's daughter was accused of enlisting in a threesome with Bill O'Reilly."
I don't know which is funnier, that quote or the one he excerpts from "The O'Reilly Factor for Kids":
"And guys, if you exploit a girl, it will come back to get you. That's called 'karma.'"
Tim McCarver is not a flake. As a sportscaster, he's a flake.

I'm new to blogs. Will someone please explain the "troll" concept? Is a troll simply someone who expresses a view contrary to prevailing ideology of a blog? Or does a troll also have to express themselves poorly?
It seems kind of juvenile really. Please let me know if I'm wrong, sort of like a way to brand someone as "not cool enough for the club." A couple of right wingers might liven things up a bit around here.

They got a look at his polling numbers and they're trying to avoid humiliation?
the polling numbers I've seen are pretty good for Chimpy today. even Zogby has him ahead.
to follow up on my blathering upthread, though, I think the problem with polling this year is not that the samples are small (hence the MoEs large) but rather that the population of likely poll respondents is no longer representative of the American voter - that is, that the samples are biased on almost every poll.
Even most of us who still have land lines are rarely at home, and when we are at home, the last thing we want to do is spend fifteen minutes talking to a pollster. I routinely hang up on pollsters, political polls, marketing surveys, or what have you; if they want my time, they can pay me for it.

In a speech quoted in mjor news outlets today, Dick Cheney said that Kerry opposed the weapons systems that helped America defeat the Soviet Union. (??) I don't remember us using any weapons on the Soviet Union. Alls I remember was the deterioration of conditions in the Soviet Union and in Eastern Europe that were inevitable with such a wrongheaded totalitarian political system and which eventually caused its collapse. I was living overseas during the years when the end came. Did we fight a war with the USSR and I missed it??? Damn John Kerry for opposing those vital weapons that defeated the Russkies! That was money well spent. He probably favored spending it on that health and environmental shit instead of good old Nucular Wup'ems.

From Dictionary.com;
"An individual who chronically trolls in sense 1; regularly posts specious arguments, flames or personal attacks to a newsgroup, discussion list, or in email for no other purpose than to annoy someone or disrupt a discussion. Trolls are recognizable by the fact that the have no real interest in learning about the topic at hand - they simply want to utter flame bait. Like the ugly creatures they are named after, they exhibit no redeeming characteristics, and as such, they are recognized as a lower form of life on the net, as in, "Oh, ignore him, he's just a troll." "
Of course, you could always just sit around and watch for yourself just how much such people add to the conversation. Indeed, how much they add to your own conversation, but trying to drown it out and even going as far as calling you at home and telling you to stop posting...
Real conservatives are welcome here. People who've been chasing the powdered chimp too much to ever consider admitting they may not have all the answer to life, the universe and everything else are not.

Before people start picking on Texans, I think they need to look at their own states. Yes we have a bit more in the way of Bushites, yes we exported the Texas political creed to the rest of the nation, but look at the number of folks who voted for Bush in other states. And as far as "hicks" are concerned, we are a pretty damn diverse group of people. That being said, in my book there is only one valid reason to put Bush in office again and that is to keep him as far away from here as possible.

I stop by here once or twice a week, as well as most blogs. This place is as bad as it gets for over the top hate, and refusal to entertain the truth. Assorted Atrios henchmen will block you after a few disageeable posts.
In other words, hello again to one of our regular trolls.
You see, Atrios only bans deliberately abusive people. And "Phillie" apparently too, who still comes here often despite the banning. But guess how many times the name "Phillie" has been seen in the last (oh let's say) 2 months?
In fact, guess how many posts have ever been made under the name "Phillie"? You can do a Google search for "Atrios Eschaton Phillie" if you want to check... Although I didn't bother, already knowing the answer.
But how is "Phillie" (or what ever name s/he will claim to have posted under originally; you'll notice they never say who it is they were, because then you'll be able to see why they were banned) able to come here despite being banned? Funny story; there's a number of trolls who've become so desperate to troll here that they've gone to extraordinary efforts to get around bannings. Atrios can tell you more if he feel's like it. But for now, let's just say that our main friend has been at it for years. And I wasn't kidding about stalking people at home either.
Now care to work out what this logically means about "Phillie"...? She's been banned here before, and yet...?
Our most obsessive friend's definately here right now as it is; The one foaming about Tena; who he absolutely cannot resist devoting his time too. You'll pick up on this particular misogynistic trait quickly, I'm sure...
One of his other tricks is to try and post as two identities at once; the obsessional stalker identity... and usualy a more "sane" poster, who echoes the insane side of himself but tries to justify it rationally. You can normally catch him as the first person to jump upon the new topic he himself starts, which isn't related to the thread in anyway, and no one else is interested in. It's almost as if he expects us to believe that all these mysteriously banned and silent posters suddenly reappear from nowhere, as if they are magically notified of the single post made in days that they actually agree with...
Oh wait; "Phillie" was responding to your question wasn't s/he, "Alex"? Well, perhaps that was merely coincidental; but if you decide to stay with us a while "Alex", you'll very quickly learn why trolls are hated all over the internet. In fact, I'll illustrate exactly why with another of Dr. Obsessovo's favourite tactic... Observe!

There has been a sea change in this presidential race.
Bush has GIVEN UP ON OHIO!
Unless Kerry can get Florida, the race now hinges on WISCONSIN! If Bush gets that plus New Mexico OR Iowa, which has been polling red for several weeks, he wins even without Ohio. So if you know anybody in Wisconsin who is persuadable, GET ON THE PHONE TO THEM NOW!!! Minnesota is 2% Bush according to Mason-Dixon, but that's a crock o' shit. Wisconsin, on the other hand, has two recent polls tied and two recent polls favoring Bush. It's in real danger of choosing the Dark Side. Iowa is looking pretty bad, too. Three out of five recent polls favor Bush, one is tied, and one has Kerry by only 1%. Gore won Iowa in 2000 by a totally negligible margin.
Maybe the incumbent effect will save our bacon, but better to play it safe. Kerry should STOP FUCKING AROUND in Arizona and Colorado, and put a stop to this end-run play in Wisconsin and Iowa IMMEDIATELY. If he picks one of these states and puts all his effort there, he will win!
Any thoughts on this out there?

What part did you find not credible? The video footage of Bush reading to kids for 7 minutes while the nation was under attack (not shown: the 20 minute press conference after or the disappearance into the hinterland for half a day after that)? The video of Colin Powell telling an Egyptian audience in 2001 that Saddam was contained, unable to produce WMD, a threat to no one, not even the region? The ties between the Bin Laden and Bush families are well known and documented, so it can't be that. So what was it that was so humorously phony?
I know - your claim that you actually saw it. Now THAT is funny.

I see you guys crowing on Freep as well as Yahoo whenever Bush leads on the hompage which has been a few times over the last couple of weeks. I will not dig through the Freep cesspool looking for a link however.
As for the poll being Kerry slanted, in fact Bush was ahead on the homepage. He is not ahead in the final predictions page however and the homepage is more or less even today due to Florida being tied.
Kerry 257
Bush 254
What does his being a Kerry supporter have to do with his compiling of public polls? Do you think that because you are dishonest that he would be as well?
Seems like it...

Northern New Mexico update (also works as troll-repellant):
Friday afternoon, big buzz, people coming in all afternoon asking for signs, getting flyers to share with neighbors, and often signing up for hours of canvassing, phone banks etc.
Saturday 8:30am. More than 200 people turn up to do a shift of canvassing neighborhoods. Every one of a couple thousand collated brochures and handouts for candidates is taken out and distributed.
Saturday afternoon: Word confirms that Kerry is coming to Albuquerque Tuesday, with 'special musical guests' and the word is Big Dog will be there too. Tickets are distributed, and are almost gone in Santa Fe. I got 2 and will take my neighbor and a couple of other folks with tickets down to the rally.
Every goal that's been set on phone calls completed, contacts made with voters on phones or in person have been met with astounding success. We count on a heavy turnout in Northern New Mexico to counter-balance the Repubs down south and the mix in the ABQ area. Looks like we'll top our always high turnout by several percentage points this time around. Proudly point to the fact we had one of the highest state-wide turnouts in 2000.
Local TV covered the visits of Kerry and Cheney Kerry crowds in southern NM today overflowing, lots of shots of Kerry and NM pols smiling and speaking to the cheering crowd. Cheney in controlled inside 'rally' with a much smaller crowd, Cheney spreading fear with his dark words.
New Mexico will go blue and our 5 electoral votes will go to Kerry, although I'm losing hope in the Romero-Wilson race down in Albuquerque.
And as a long-time Mets fan, I never thought I'd say this, but:

Hecate - I've done some volunteer work on every cycle since 84 here - even if it was just driving people to the polls on Election Day. I've never seen so many people working weeks before the election as I have this fall. Folks around here were ready by the January caucus to vote Bush out.
We've got a decent amount of money to spend, there's people stepping up and asking what they can do, many who readily say they have never done any voluntering before, but they couldn't sit by and do nothing to stop Bush and the repubs.
I was in a local mega-chain store at the beginning of the week. The nice middle aged lady who checked me out commented on my K/E button. I asked if she had voted yet, she replied "No, but I'm going out to early vote this week and taking my aunt with me. The only way these Republicans ever win is by cheating. So we're going to make sure we get our votes in early."
I gave her my button to wear when not working, pulled out a spare to give to her auntie, and on the way home, just kept chanting:
"Kerry in a Landslide, Kerry in a Landslide, The People are Awake and we're giving Kerry a Landslide!"

ah dang it, those wicked Haloscan cookies, now you all know my secret identity
I think you're wrong about support for Kerry, and perhaps unlucky in the people you meet. My husband's a proud vet supporting Kerry, so's our next door neighbor here in AZ. We recently got Air America and other programs on the radio here, so many people are thrilled and excited about it, many many people calling the station to thank them over and over again for 24 hour progressive programming.
I rarely meet a Bush supporter, and the ones who are seem sheepish about it. I think Arizona is going to surprise the hell out of a lot of people. We have 20,000 people working for the AZ Dem Party campaign, and that doesn't begin to count the other groups like MoveOn and ACT and others. There's a palpable excitement in the air. Haven't seen this much vibrancy since...ever!

albert champion,
the places you are listing are terribly right wing strongholds, so it's not surprising that you're meeting all of the wingers. Anywhere outside of the Chicago metropolitan area, for example, tends to be quite conservative. Doesn't take away from the fact that illinois is a through and through red state. Casper, Wy, well, wasn't Cheney from there? I mean, I could make the argument that everywhere I go everyone wants to see Bush dethroned, but I myself tend to be restricted to visiting large cities, and most of the people I interact with are of the 18-34 age group, so it's a selective sampling. So keep in mind that you are interacting with certain groups of people from republican strongholds. But like polling, it's not indicative of much.

albert, when you write this:
"also, it is possible that i run in the wrong income group."
Your elitist trolly roots are showing.
Fortunately, although it may take a struggle to get the votes of the poor and middle class, minorities and urban votes counted, our votes count as much as your votes does in the final talley. And there's a hell of a lot more of us than there are of you.
My family's been broke and poor. Now we're in the tax bracket that Kerry is going to tax the most, and that's because of our own efforts, educations aided by government grants, and the Clinton economy. We don't mind, as a matter of fact, we gave all of Bush tax cut and then some to Kerry and Democratic orgs.
So kindly go pluck yourself, elitist a-hole, thinking that the reason we don't like you very much is because _you_ think you make more money than other folks who post here. Many of us could probably buy and sell you, we just don't brag about it.
1. It's to Kerry's advantage to have Bush a few points ahead in the polls this close to election. Think about it. If Rove thinks Bush is ahead, he may relax a little. That's good for all of us. Also, it may mean that fewer people get harrassed by freaked-out republicans challenging them at the polls. I'm for that. Don't get so worked up if the infotainment outlets are reporting higher numbers for the powdered chimp.
2. We don't want Limbaugh off the air. Limbaugh is like a toilet. He attracts all the turds to him and they all sink lower and lower until they're all in the cesspool together. You can identify them by the smell and the brown. They're hopeless anyway, so let them all swim together. He keeps them out of the way of "thinking" people.
3. I visited the freepers site and the Tucker Eskew or is it Askew? sites. People there are seriously deluded. That's a good thing. LEt them live in their dream world, voting for their chimp king. The rest of us will help get our democracy back while they pout and moan.

albert, the slide downhill would be rapid if things went the way the Wrepublicans predicted- not publically, but in their own PNAC-AEI policy bubble.
After all, in 50 years there will be no fossil fuels.
Stop and think about that, everybody.
The Wrepublicans intended to use the worsening economic conditions to return the West back to a neo-feudal culture.
So they never seriously considered this: alternative energy sources can easily run industrial societies if the desire to develop and re-tool is there.
Kerry plans on this.
If the Democrats were Liebercrats, yes, albert, we'd be "sliding down the razor" just as fast as we have been with Bu$hCo in charge.
But they're not.
Kerry has always been a sincere progressive. And if we can drive and keep Cheney's private contractor buddies out of national policy machine and away from the Treasury, Kerry should be able to turn around this socio-economic slide.
Just like the Big Dog did to Poppy's economic slide.

A Bush pre-election strike on Iran 'imminent'
White House insider report "October Surprise" imminent
By Wayne Madsen
According to White House and Washington Beltway insiders, the Bush
administration, worried that it could lose the presidential election to
Senator John F. Kerry, has initiated plans to launch a military strike on
Iran's top Islamic leadership, its nuclear reactor at Bushehr on the Persian
Gulf, and key nuclear targets throughout the country, including the main
underground research site at Natanz in central Iran and another in Isfahan.
Targets of the planned U.S. attack reportedly include mosques in Tehran,
Qom, and Isfahan known by the U.S. to headquarter Iran's top mullahs.
The Iran attack plan was reportedly drawn up after internal polling
indicated that if the Bush administration launched a so-called
anti-terrorist attack on Iran some two weeks before the election, Bush would
be assured of a landslide win against Kerry. Reports of a pre-emptive strike
on Iran come amid concerns by a number of political observers that the Bush
administration would concoct an "October Surprise" to influence the outcome
of the presidential election.
According to White House sources, the USS John F. Kennedy was deployed to
the Arabian Sea to coordinate the attack on Iran. Defense Secretary Donald
Rumsfeld discussed the Kennedy's role in the planned attack on Iran when he
visited the ship in the Arabian Sea on October 9. Rumsfeld and defense
ministers of U.S. coalition partners, including those of Albania,
Azerbaijan, Bahrain, Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Georgia,
Hungary, Iraq, Latvia, Lithuania, Macedonia, Mongolia, Poland, Qatar,
Romania, and Ukraine briefly discussed a very "top level" view of potential
dual-track military operations in Iran and Iraq in a special "war room" set
up on board the aircraft carrier. America's primary ally in Iraq, the United
Kingdom, did not attend the planning session because it reportedly disagrees
with a military strike on Iran. London also suspects the U.S. wants to move
British troops from Basra in southern Iraq to the Baghdad area to help put
down an expected surge in Sh'ia violence in Sadr City and other Sh'ia areas
in central Iraq when the U.S. attacks Iran as well as clear the way for a
U.S. military strike across the Iraqi-Iranian border aimed at securing the
huge Iranian oil installations in Abadan. U.S. allies South Korea,
Australia, Kuwait, Jordan, Italy, Netherlands, and Japan were also left out
of the USS John F. Kennedy planning discussions because of their reported
opposition to any strike on Iran.

In addition, Israel has been supplied by the United States with 500 "bunker
buster" bombs. According to White House sources, the Israeli Air Force will
attack Iran's nuclear facility at Bushehr with the U.S. bunker busters. The
joint U.S.-Israeli pre-emptive military move against Iran reportedly was
crafted by the same neo-conservative grouping in the Pentagon and Vice
President Dick Cheney's office that engineered the invasion of Iraq.
Morale aboard the USS John F. Kennedy is at an all-time low, something that
must be attributable to the knowledge that the ship will be involved in an
extension of U.S. military actions in the Persian Gulf region. The
Commanding Officer of an F-14 Tomcat squadron was relieved of command for a
reported shore leave "indiscretion" in Dubai and two months ago the
Kennedy's commanding officer was relieved for cause.
The White House leak about the planned attack on Iran was hastened by
concerns that Russian technicians present at Bushehr could be killed in an
attack, thus resulting in a wider nuclear confrontation between Washington
and Moscow. International Atomic Energy Agency representatives are also
present at the Bushehr facility. In addition, an immediate Iranian Shahab
ballistic missile attack against Israel would also further destabilize the
Middle East. The White House leaks about the pre-emptive strike may have
been prompted by warnings from the CIA and the Defense Intelligence Agency
that an attack on Iran will escalate out of control. Intelligence circles
report that both intelligence agencies are in open revolt against the Bush
White House.
White House sources also claimed they are "terrified" that Bush wants to
start a dangerous war with Iran prior to the election and fear that such a
move will trigger dire consequences for the entire world.

Yesterday a friend voted early at a polling location in Austin. She voted straight Democratic. When she did the final check, lo and behold every vote was for the Democratic candidates except that it showed that she had voted for Bush/Cheney for president/vice pres.
She immediately got a poll official. On her vote, it was corrected. She
called the Travis County Democratic headquarters. They took all her information. They told her that she wasn't the first to report a similar incident and that they are looking into it.
So, check before you leave the polling booth, and if anything is
wrong, get it corrected immediately.
Report any irregularities to your local Democratic headquarters.

Thanks Plutodog.
Is there any chance this story could be a Karl Rove set-up? He is famous for this kind of thing.
He could say Kerry leaked the story to make the chimpster look bad.
I dunno, it kind of rings true.

kelley,
kerry, sincere progressive? whaaaa? on the environment maybe. have you seen all of his corporate deregulation votes? his coddling of big media? nevermind his voting for every trade bill there ever was. when kerry brags in his rallies he broke party ranks to vote with reagan to reduce the deficit, that was done on the backs of poor people. children were deprived of healthcare because of that vote.
compare kerry with a true progressive. fiengold voted against nafta, NCLB, patriot act, against the iraq war resolution, etc. now that's a real progressive.
all this talk about kerry being rated the most liberal senator--it's nothing but bogus propaganda generated to serve up bush with attack ammo.
yes we should all be voting for kerry but don't be delusional. people should know the reality of what it is they are voting for. and not be bamboozled by the idealized campaign manufactured image party hacks have crafted.

pardon me, the game is into adverts now. i shall take advantage of the intermission.
i have tuned in. short comment...i don't think that you are paying attention to what i have been saying.
and anyone who thinks me a troll hasn't been reading my posts. ever.
let me say it again. undoubtedly there are anti-bushits. i just don't encounter many of them.
now, they must be there, because the polls say that they are out there.
but pay attention, among my employees, doing an in-house poll, only 2 of us will be voting for kerry/edwards. one of us is 55. the other is 62. and as i said, USN and USMC. in the vietnam era.
that is 2% of my workforce. most of them women earning just above the minimum wage.
quite candidly, this voting orientation depresses me.
i don't understand it.
and then, there is a part of me that does understand the hatred of democrats. if you have ever read me, you know that i hate the usg for killing so many iraqi noncombatants.
and this homicidal mania is not exclusively bushian. surely you can recall madeline albright[bill clinton's secstate] and her response to the unicef reports of the deaths of 500,000+ iraqi children...
what was it that she said? something like, we acknowledge those numbers and think them acceptable.
think on that.
and also think on the clintonian cruise missile attack on iraq. more death and destruction unleashed by the democratic president than unleashed by bush1.
but, as i read the posters[posturers] on this site, democrats murdering noncombatants is OK.
and of course, it should be noted that the 500,000 - 1,000,000 noncombatant deaths that the more evil c*nt[madeline albright] than condi rice countenanced, were murdered during the reign of that great humanitarian, bill clinton.
yeah, tell that to the sudanese.
and tell that to all those living in the balkans.
so, think on this, those of you who profess to be saviors of life, why is there no record of any outrage from kerry/edwards concerning this country and its murdering of noncombatants?
and that is the crime...
the democrats are as homicidal as the republicans.
i weep. because nothing will be changing this november. even if kerry/edwards triumph.
iraqi women, children and old men will still be getting killed by us forces. afghan women, children, and old men will still be getting killed by us forces.
it is clear to me from reading the responses that i have generated that virtually none can read[and that includes you dr pederast].
and this is what explains the death of the republic - the ascension of the ignorants.
signing off now. preparing for my move to france.
i no longer want to converse with so many idiots.
good luck. hope you are able to keep your hold on a democratic republic.
but it is my assertion that you have lost it. imagine one boner versus another boner. and you think this to be a contest. hah.
so it goes.

just remembered, even kerry's commitment to the environment is suspect when he blocks wind farms from going up next to his home at cape cod. would spoil the view.

What ho? Advert on the old telly, don't you know! Pip pip! Yanks such as myself -- yes, truly I am an American! -- fear for this Kerry chap. All the reports I've heard from my mates tell me that Bush is in for victory honours. It's all over but the shouting. I am an American, with my finger on the pulse, et cetera. Kerry, you're done for. Take it from me, an actual American. Don't bother voting. Up Bush. Down Kerry. Well, that's what my fellow Americans are saying. Cheers!

yes albert. it wasn't just bush senior who betrayed the kurds. clinton also promised to back the kurds in an attempted coup, promised them air cover, but abandoned them in the last hour to saddam's wrath.
clinton fearing failure didn't want another bay of pigs on his hands. clinton allowed the kurds to be slaughtered. iraqi lives lost was less important than sparing him political embarrassment.
but we refuse to hold clinton accountable because he's elvis. because he's the big dog. because we worship at the alter of charisma.

Shouldn't there be some "hurrrm"s sprinkled in there? (I heart comic books.)
Funny, my good buddy (Marine Recon) is thinking the same way you are, albert. He also bumps into a lot of people who vote against their own best interests. He can't figure it out either.
Good luck with your move, and tell Crumb I said "Hi".

I am an American, living abroad now for over 10 years...so correct me if I'm wrong but I seem to recall that when one registers to vote, like outside a shopping center or something...that you do NOT receive a receipt. Is that correct?
I seem to recall even then having a weird feeling, wondering how long I should wait before receiving confirmation about being processed.
The partisan ruling by a republican judge in Las Vegas sickens me. For one thing the process itself ought to be more foolproof. I mean, if one registers to vote, one ought to receive official confirmation by a certain number of days. Also obviously ought to receive a receipt with date, time, and place signed by the person registering you, AND there ought to be sufficient time after the "cutoff date" that allows anyone that has registered in time and correctly to find out if their registration has been processed and if not they must have access to redress in time to vote.
I am amazed that this isn't the case.
I myself applied in time from Europe, but received a "sample ballot" that I was to fill out (with NO instructions that I was to use the sample ballot as my actual ballot) and when I called Contra Costa, CA to find out what this all was, they told me they would transfer my vote to a real balot when they got it. I am registered as a democrat. I would love to know if Republicans abroad got the same treatment...they claimed they didn't get the ballots in time. They also claimed they forgot to put the letter explaining that one should use the sample ballots in the envelope.
There ARE ways one could tighten up this process...hell, if we're going "hi-tech" with the voting machines we damn well ought to be able to log on on the net, and get access to our own vote to see if it was registered as we filled out.
Hell, the republicans ought to even be for that, since poor people often have no access to the net...
But King George wants a fucking FLAG ammendment...how about a damn ammendment to standardize voting so that all are assured a system that actually will COUNT their goddamn votes?
He's spreading something all right, but it doesn't smell like democracy.

but pay attention, among my employees, doing an in-house poll, only 2 of us will be voting for kerry/edwards
Late to the thread (next morning), don't know if it's still alive...but I dunno about that, albert. I was once one of 2 people in my immediate hallway at work who did not vote for Oliver North for Senate.
He still lost.
I see so much support for Kerry/Edwards around here that I can't help but be optimistic. I know northern VA always goes for the Dems, but I never saw this much fervor before. A friend & I, sitting on a bench in a shopping center yesterday, burst into spontaneous applause at the sight of this bumper sticker: "Republicans for Kerry."
I am disturbed by the vitriol on both sides, though. Post election is going to be pretty ugly, at least for a while.

If I wanted to average about a dozen Presidentail polls, I'm thinking it would not be statistically acceptable to average polls which entertained different candidates (i.e. some of the polls did not include Nader). Or, can I get away with this if I just ignore Nader's percentages throughout?
Also, when averaging polls, is it acceptable to just average the margins-of-error for all the polls used in the average? Or, do I also need to somehow take into account sample-numbers or any other factors.
I might be giving a short speech next week and I'd love to include some poll data in a concise way, but I don't want to screw it up with ignorant mistakes.
