I'MMA LET YOU FINISH

SECOND FRIST TODAY?

I just saw footage of Bush showing up at a rally in Florida by helicopter to Top Gun music. God how campy. Does this crap really turn on his base? Bill Maher hit the nail on the head, it's all about emotion with these people.

Gravatar"Eye of the Tiger"? Are you f**king kidding me? (I thought it playing on that commercial was just a joke!)

God, Shrub's fans' taste in music is as horrendous as their taste in presidential candidates!

GravatarAt least he didn't play shirtless volleyball with Cheney. I just finished my dinner.

GravatarBoy am I sick of the WaPo. Even when they do the right thing, they do it in the wrong way. And their Sunday paper sucks, and their new restaurant reviewer really sucks and their ballet coverage sucks.

GravatarWell, it is better than a poke in the eye with a sharp stick.

GravatarSunday, October 24, 2004; Page B06

...B06?

Shorter Wapo endorsement: anyone but Bush.

Gravatar"Does this crap really turn on his base?"

More than you know.

I've often remarked that people who are devoutly Bush had brutal disciplinarians as fathers, and view the president as the father figure of the nation, and thus respect Bush's drunken violent maschismo. If Bush wanted to speak to these people directly, he would show up to these events wearing a stained wife beater and drinking a Pabst. Images of Rodney Dangerfield in "Natural Born Killers" springs to mind.

GravatarI'm glad they endorsed Kerry and at the same time think they gave Bushco way too much credit; they made it sound as if bushco had some idea about what they were doing, like there was reason involved in the choices. Huh?

GravatarGod. What a bunch of crap. NY Times kicked their ass.

"We look back on the past four years with hearts nearly breaking." NY Times endorsement of John Kerry.

WaPo is so passionless...

Gravatarhe would show up to these events wearing a stained wife beater and drinking a Pabst.

assuming, of course, that he still drank...Pretzel, anyone?

Gravatarand their ballet coverage sucks.

Ballet? How French. Post starts coverin' two step line dancin', maybe I'll see if I can get Karl to let me start lookin' at the pichers in the paper again. I miss lookin' at pichers.

Now, My Pet Goat, there was some pichers in THAT book...7 minutes worth...

GravatarThey criticize Kerry's "zig zags on Iraq," yet his criticisms of Bush policy pretty much mirrors theirs.

GravatarOr, alternately, that episode of All in the Family where Archie's drunk and relates to Meathead how his father busted him around. There's a lot of Archies in the Republican party.

Shoot. Feeling ill. I have my laptop hooked up so I can watch TV, flip through the cable, and surf the internet. I have to give this up. My, um...what do you call it..attention span (?) is taking a nosedive.

KERRY IN A LANDSLIDE!

Gravatar******Breaking*****
Des Moines Register endorses Kerry!!!!

http://www.dmregister.com/apps/p...317/1035& lead=1

GravatarWashington Post = wishy-washy.

Gravatar******Breaking*****

Haloscan.

(Seriously, though, that's probably a quantum leap more important than the WAPO endorsement.)

GravatarNow that both NYT and WaPo have endorsed Kerry, is it remotely possible CNN will pull their heads out of Unca Karl's ass?

Gravatar*****Breaking ********

Pickler gets a -- HUGE Scoop --

What a bitch that thing gets, when the campaign miles rack up on her over-sized postion seat at the AP

GravatarI got me an editor association problem...

-- Huge Scoop2 --

GravatarWow, I didn't think it was possible, but yes, that editorial was bland and hallucinogenic at the same time.

GravatarKate Graham,

I'm glad you died before you had to see this shameful display of so-called journalism.

Gravatarremotely possible CNN...

No.

Gravatar"assuming , of course, that he still drank. . ."-watertiger

bush obviously still drinks like a fucking fish. he never quit drinking. he just quit going out in public unsupervised.

GravatarDes Moines Register endorses Kerry!!!!

That's huge, I used to live there. The Register is a very respected paper.

GravatarWho did they endorse last year, Gore?

GravatarThe NYT endorsment was beautiful, when they said history has called out to GWB on so many occassions......does anyone have the quote?

GravatarHowie Kurtz is still in the ladies' room crying.

GravatarFor those who didn't see Lawrence O'Donnell's masterful handling of the liar John O'Neill on MSGOP last night, some wingnut has kindly posted the clip.

Also, show Tucker Eskew some love by adding your comments to his, um, blog.

GravatarThis is kind of a weird request, but does anyone know on a online database or website to see who has contributed to the Repugs or the BushCo marketing, er reelection campaigns? I am in the process of doing some work on my house and DO NOT want to patronize any contractor who has given $ to the fascists. Thanks
mvp

GravatarMy favorite was:

"We look back on the last four years with hearts nearly breaking."

Atrios made fun of it all, but I thought it was one of the most powerful newspaper endorsements I've read. And I think if you look through the Times history, it doesn't get much graver then that.

GravatarNew Mexico New Mexico New Mexico
The states to watch over the next few
days are Wisconsin (10), Iowa (7), and
New Mexico (5), the three states that
Bush will be hitting Sunday through
Tuesday as he tries to make up for the
potential loss of Ohio's 20 electoral
votes.

GravatarGood lord. I'm leafing through the Sunday New York Times, and I just came across an ad for Good Morning America:

"An Exclusive Morning Television Event. George W. Bush -- The Interview. Only a week before the election. President Bush. Charles Gibson. An exclusive interview. Personal. Provocative. Not politics as usual."

Mebbe that's why he was down on the farm today.

GravatarI was reading the endorsement, getting more and more irritated, until it hit me: what I was reading is the inner angst of the Republican establishment who just simply cannot endorse Bush. It's chock full of repub spin-points and conservative world-view pronouncements--but finally, they just can't do it. They really want to endorse Bob Dole, but he isn't running.
By the time I finished, it really left me with valuable insight to how the fat-cat patrimony Republicans are feeling right about now: "Damn these whiney soak-the-rich one-world liberals--but the moron's driving the country over the cliff. He has to go."

Compare this endorsement to The American Conservative Magazine's Kerry endorsement, and see if they don't sound awfully, awfully similar.

Gravatarthank you sgo for introducing Supadubya earlier today.
great lyrics:

a new age has dawned rising from the ashes of the innocent
my dead versus your dead let's see who can get more militant
blood for blood, pound for pound, an eye for an eye
my tribal god has told me that i must murder or die

you kill ten of mine, i must kill ten thousand of yours
preemptively decapitating all those who dare to oppose
shoot the motherfuckers now, and ask questions much later
terrorist, freedom fighter, innocent bystander, instigator

it don't matter, your ass is brown, you got a towel on top of your head
you pray to a foreign god, you pray to mine or i'll shoot you dead
patriots, sidewinders, m-1's and f-16's
the most beautiful display of destruction mankind has ever seen

i'm not an invader, i came here to liberate your people
i'm carpet bombing your mosques so i can build my church steeples
yeah, freedom and democracy, baseball and apple pie
buy and consume or go bye bye bye

now who the fuck do you think you are to go against my manifest destiny
i got a mandate from my god to smite all of my enemies
look at me the wrong way and i'll put your ass on my shit list
what? you want some of this, bitch? i'll take you for a ride, with no witness

what would jesus do? fuck that, you know it's just a front
to appease the bible thumpers while i do what the fuck i want
propagatin propaganda, live in fear and i'll protect ya
i'll raise the terror alert and you know that i'm gonna check ya

what books do you read, who do you talk to, where you goin, what's your habit?

the usurping bastard child of an archaic plutocratic system
what's my fucking name..?! if it was something else you'd have missed him
playing games with poppy's cash, let's bankrupt the company make bank on the options
fuck the pension plan, fuck aunt millie, neck deep in corruption

power to the people, no the power belongs to the white men in white collars
gathering every single day to worship in the temple of the dollar
mr greenspan, mr greenspan, tell me which way the wind blows
and why are all these people jumping out of their fuckin windows?

why are all these mothers crying for children that won't return
their blood spilling in the desert while the city of baghdad burns
the black blood that feeds the empire must never stop flowing
no price is too high, we must keep shocking and awing

it's the project for the new american century, the new world order
an empire disguised as democracy, prostituted and distorted
you think this shit started the day the towers came falling down?
no, it's an old idea we've been munching on and kicking around

we've been waitin to scratch that itch for

Sort of an October surprise, I guess.
I hope they ask him about the bulge in his jacket.

GravatarI have the NYT quote: "We're shamless shills for Kerry, we can't help it. Our Communist upbringing and hate for all the things that are good about America force us to bow down at his feet. Long live John Kerry. We hate George Bush, who does he think he is, representing the US? that's our job."

GravatarI wouldn't even touch Susan Estrich with your little soldier, Atrios. She wants me, though.

I'm savin' mine for O'Lielly when he comes out.

GravatarOlaf, I like the way you think.

My conspiracy-minded family and friends have been asserting since it happened that the Pretzel Incident was just a cover-up for Bush getting sloshed out of his noggin.

GravatarCharlie Gibson should ask this question:

"George, what the fuck was wrong with you when you charged at me during the debate? The viewers don't know this, but I smelled booze and pot on your breath."

Gravatar"I just saw footage of Bush showing up at a rally in Florida by helicopter to Top Gun music. God how campy. Does this crap really turn on his base? Bill Maher hit the nail on the head, it's all about emotion with these people."

I always thought they played the theme from "Elmo's World" when Bush showed up.

I heard that's his favorite.

GravatarYeah, Lawrence O'Donnell was masterful, he screamed "Liar" 500 times. He's just making sure that when the Kerry ship sinks, he can claim that he was pumping the bilge as fast as he could...

GravatarI hope they ask him about the bulge in his jacket.

Charles Gibson?

That's funny.

And hey, thanks for the hotlink to the Win Back Respect ad last night.
I finally got to see it.

GravatarOur Communist upbringing and hate for all the things that are good about America force us to bow down at his feet.

AH-HAHAHAHAHAHAHA! Troll, don't make it quite so obvious that you don't even READ the NY Times!

GravatarAlso, show Tucker Eskew some love by adding your comments to his, um, blog.

Be prepared, the wingnuts over there are just as ignorant as they are when the find their way here.

GravatarAnonymous:
Quick survey--did your father beat you?

Just a theory I have...

GravatarEt tu, Brute? Then fall, Caesar!

GravatarThe Houston Chronicle endorsed Bush. It was too much to hope that they would show any stones or any sense, but hope I did.

GravatarWAPO HO Why doesn't your reportage reflect your choice? Ho! Ho!

Gravatar"Yeah, Lawrence O'Donnell was masterful, he screamed "Liar" 500 times. He's just making sure that when the Kerry ship sinks, he can claim that he was pumping the bilge as fast as he could..."

Boy, the WingNuts hate it when a Dem adopts their rhetorical strategies (i.e. screaming) to make a point.

"No fair! No fair!"

Bwahahahaha!

GravatarChimpy counted his fingers and toes.
His keepers cheered with robust bravos.
"He's precocious, you know,"
Said the zoologic honcho.
"He flings shit at the fucking homos."

GravatarThat Des Moines Register editorial was beautiful, anyway to switch it with WaPo?

But Kerry, we believe, has a better chance of overcoming that anger. It is the nature of the man to listen and to respect others. He does not tend toward vindictiveness or in-your-face triumphalism. There is a dignity about him.

GravatarEt tu, Brute? Then fall, Caesar!

GravatarThis just posted by Drudge:

Rush Limbaugh arrested running naked through the streets of Palm Beach. Claimed wolves were chasing him.

Developing . . .

GravatarElmo likes his goldfish, his crayons too, thaaats Elmo's world!

GravatarIt's kind of funny how wingers are always complaining about Godwin's law, but are really quick to label anyone slightly to the left of Pat Buchanan a (take your pick, wingers don't know the difference anyway) socialist, communist, marxist. Methinks they long for the good old days of the cold war.

GravatarGeorgie likes his co-caine, his liquor too!

That's Georgie's world!

Gravatarassuming, of course, that he still drank...

You don't think so? I've seen him with the alkie red nose a few times... and I recognize it well, as my grandfather has the same Rudolph glow when he hits the sauce.

GravatarSupadubya rocks.

Gravatar[Washington Post] On the one hand, Bush sucks. On the other hand, Bush rulez.

Geeze, make up your frickin' mind already. There's some serious butt kissin goin on in that endorsement. Sounds like they're hedging their bets in case Bush wins they don't want to face any repercussions.

GravatarHow many people here ever heard of someone passing out from eating a pretzel. It's the lamest excuse there is, do you think a rehab counselor would buy that bullshit excuse if a client showed up at his door with a face-plant full of bruises?

GravatarThere is a dignity about him.

Ah, dignity.

Remember that?

Shrub is the opposite of dignity, and he's the chief exhibit in this circus of bloodthirsty lunatics running our country--for the next three months.

GravatarWas Limbaugh spotted running naked with a falafel in each hand?

GravatarDrunkee, interesting that you should make that observation. I was just listening to an introductory psychology course on the Learning Channel the other day, and it does turn out that people who are very strict and judgemental towards others had fathers who were the same way. I think this explains the red/blue state of America today.

GravatarNo joke, if Bush actually manages to steal the election, any media organization that goes over the top in supporting Kerry is in trouble. These people are vicious, and the WaPo knows it. They are being careful.

Gravatar" Does this crap really turn on his base"

Now we know who answers those Nigerian spam scams.

GravatarReading the Register endorsement almost gives one hope that there's some heart left in the Heartland even if it's in scarce supply elswhere.

GravatarSheesh, that mealy-mouthed piece of crap makes the NYTimes endorsement sound like it deserves a Pulitzer.

Essentially, what the WaPo is saying is that it unreservedly accepts all the Kool-Aid it peddled in previous Bush-lovin' editorials, but even then doesn't think the Chimp has earned another term. Oh, and that Kerry isn't the Chimp.

What crapola.

GravatarLawrence O'Donnell was stellar last night. He just kept shouting "Lies" with a sense of firmness (rather than rabid insanity- the way I do), and he looked pretty good doing it too.

As for the WaPo, I can't bring myself to read it beyond the occasional Dana Milbank piece or EJ Dionne column.

Gravatar"Was Limbaugh spotted running naked with a falafel in each hand?"

Indeed, police are reporting that Limbaugh was carrying a falafel in each hand. They believe the wolves may have been after the falafel, Tim.

Gravatar"As for the WaPo, I can't bring myself to read it beyond the occasional Dana Milbank piece or EJ Dionne column."

You mean you don't follow Tell Me About It?
Omigawd...

Gravatar"We look back on the last four years with hearts nearly breaking."

Amen Amen Amen! Fucking Bush has destroyed the reputation of the USA.

The right-wing nuttery have destroyed the fabric of American decency, honor and integrity. It will be an uphill battle to get it back. The era of stupidity in the USA is over the minute President Kerry takes office.

I'm ashamed beyond measure that a fuck-wit like Bush was able to do such damage while the majority sat silent.

GravatarAh, yes. The One Without the Texas Accent

(this better freakin' link. if not, i've pasted the URL in homepage.)

GravatarWhat media outlet worth its salt could support a former cheerleader like George W. Bush during a time of terror.

GravatarWe went outdoors, wet our fingers, and held them up in the air.

We believe the wind is blowing in the direction of John Kerry.

GravatarI was just listening to an introductory psychology course on the Learning Channel the other day

Step away from the Learning Channel. It is wingnuttery in the highest degree.Even if they do have "fags" on it.The wingnuts eat that shit up.

I havent watched TLC since they gave up on their educational programming. The wingnut wife and all her freinds watch it till the cows come home.

GravatarWhile driving down Baltimore Pike near Lansdowne, PA this evening, I spotted a white sign on the sign of road on which was written, simply:

falafel?

I laughed so hard I almost drove off the road. Then tried to explain to my wife and 3-1/2 year-old son what was so funny.

Jake (my son) had a good laugh too. He thought "falafel" was very funny and for the remainder of the ride home, pleaded, "Daddy, tell some more funny stories!!"

In other news: did 4 hours of canvassing today for MoveOnPAC, along with 2 volunteers who came down from NYC. It was frustratingly unproductive (no one was home today!) but felt good to know I was trying.

And, I just sent $25 to Patsy. Got a nice letter from Stan yesterday saying thanks for the turkee...

If & when we pull this thing off, I have promised to get straight with the good Lord above. Should probably start by changing my Atrios handle. Leaning towards JFKFC...

GravatarTribute Paid to Fallen Soldiers With 1,100 Coffins

WASHINGTON (AP) - A small group of war protesters paid tribute to the troops who died in Iraq by setting up more than 1,100 flag-draped cardboard coffins in front of the Lincoln Memorial on Saturday.

The coffins stretched halfway down each side of the reflecting pool. At 1 p.m., members of the Iraq War Memorial Coalition read the names of the people who were killed and then played taps.

Pat Elder, who helped organize the event, said the 75-member coalition was formed two weeks ago by people who belonged to the Quaker faith, Veterans for Peace and Military Families Speak Out.

"We just wanted to get across the idea that there's a human cost to this war," said Elder, 49, who owns a real estate title company in Bethesda, Md. "We're not the radical ones. We are moderates, We're not all antiwar, we're just against this war."

Elder said the event was made possible by an anonymous donor from Texas who contributed $20,000, used to pay for cardboard coffins and flags.

It took 75 volunteers six hours to put together the coffins, Elder said.

As of Friday, at least 1,104 members of the U.S. military have died since the beginning of the Iraq war in March 2003, according to an Associated Press count. At least 844 died as a result of hostile action, according to the Defense Department as of Friday. The figures include three military civilians.

GravatarOh, f**k me. It was a Yahoo article about Jeb Bush campaigning for his brother. The quote I was going to draw yer attention to was this:

"People were impressed with his performance during the hurricanes. As a governor, he grew a lot," said Roger Handberg, a political analyst at the University of Central Florida.

"He was not partisan during the hurricanes themselves and that's what people remember," said Handberg.

I should certainly hope NOT! Oh, so sorry, Democrats don't get drinking water.

Wankers.

GravatarOT: One goddam thing after another.

I was wondering what year-end Eurobashing would look like for 2004. Last year it was The Air France Terror Flights to Tahiti. This year it's going to be Galileo, the GPS competitor.

Appartently the Pentagon now considers Galileo to be the terrorists' positioning service and is threatening to shoot the satellites down for "compromising US and NATO military operations" and the Pentagon's own secret "M" service.

The language for such a move is dubbed "irreversible action". We will take "irreversible action." All your coordinates are belong to us.

GravatarBush brief supports Blackwell on Ohio voting dispute. They don't believe in the concept of a provisional ballot.

GravatarJFKFC...

Just fucking kidding for christs....?

Gravatar"What media outlet worth its salt could support a former cheerleader like George W. Bush during a time of terror."

Hey, let's not get too harsh here. From what I've read, Bush led some GREAT cheers exhorting the REAL soldiers, like Kerry, as they departed for Nam.

"Hold 'em, boys, hold 'em, hold 'em over there! Fight those dirty Commies so I don't have to go!"

Brought a smile to many of the REAL soldiers' faces.

GravatarOuch! Pop-up single to the throat! That's gonna leave a mark.

Never really saw baseball as a contact sport before.

GravatarShrub is the opposite of dignity, and he's the chief exhibit in this circus of bloodthirsty lunatics running our country--for the next three months.
Thersites

You are correct, sister! My heart and mind is sick over the fact that this bastard has even a 1% support among the general population.

GravatarSmalfish tell us more. I was watching the Discovery Science channel 8:15 here on the Left Coast) and there's a relentless add for "FarenHYPE 9/11".

What the fuck?!

GravatarPalmer,

Perhaps you heard his personal favorite:

T, A, N, G
That is where you got to be
To stay home!
To stay home!

GravatarUpthread pbr (or somebody like that):

By the time I finished, it really left me with valuable insight to how the fat-cat patrimony Republicans are feeling right about now: "Damn these whiney soak-the-rich one-world liberals--but the moron's driving the country over the cliff. He has to go."

Well, well written. The Chicago Sun Times was just as bad. "We praise oh praise Dear Leader, but are afraid he's not quiiiiiite what we had in mind for a President..."

Drek. But gotta take what we can get. Houston Chronical could've almost, almost broken President Spoiled Brat's back, but, alas, as someone said above: "no stones."

GravatarMaureen

GravatarMy conspiracy-minded family and friends have been asserting since it happened that the Pretzel Incident was just a cover-up for Bush getting sloshed out of his noggin.

epilepsy, maybe.

would explain a lot of things.

GravatarThat's a great one, Watertiger.

Just spit my libation all over the desk.

Gravatarso if Dubya landed to "top gun" music, does that mean that the flight suit is far behind?

GravatarWe look back on the last four years with hearts nearly breaking

I look back on the last four years like I look back on that party someone dragged me to back in college, where a bunch of drunken fratboys shouted to each other about how they liked beating up homosexuals and foreigners, threw up on each other, humiliated the women who were there--who put up with it in a disgustingly subservient fashion, pissed in the hallway, started crying when some eejit put on Billy Joel's "Piano Man," and in general seemed really repressed, confused, depressed, and annoying.

GravatarLimbaugh naked? Ugh pleeeeeze! It makes me think of vienna sausages!

Lord, I need a drink!

Now here's an image. I think Bush owes Limbaugh a LOT. Like maybe a good ass tonguing?

Gravatarsyntallic

Fine, lets elect the Flight Suit, it has more spine then the contents.

GravatarOrlando Sentinel endorsed Kerry
the first democrat they have endorsed since 1964

this is huge !

GravatarWaPo is so passionless...

We take exception to that.

We would gladly do your wife.

GravatarWaPo endorsed Kerry with as much enthusiasm as one has going to get a root canal.

The whole thing was one giant backhanded compliment. We are will endorse Kerry because we feel he won't be quite as big a colossal failure as Junior, a colossal failure for which we think Junior has been unfairly rapped by his critics.

Gravatarmeal·y-mouthed

adjective

lacking frankness or directness: wary of speaking plainly or openly, especially of admitting unpleasant truths.

As in: (While endorsing Kerry) We do not view a vote for Mr. Kerry as a vote without risks.

GravatarFine, lets elect the Flight Suit, it has more spine then the contents.

At least we know it's got bigger balls than the content...

GravatarIsn't bob Woodword a shill for the Republicans? And does he have an adam's apple?? as Stann Coulter does? or is he just a shill?

Gravatar and there's a relentless add for "FarenHYPE 9/11".

No doubt junior ads out the ass too.

Watching the war channel err...I mean the History channel, has junior ads with NO Kerry ads.

GravatarEkCenTrik, please I want to see the flight suit on Chimpy again ... maybe he can fly an F16 into the Rockies and never be heard from again.

the only downside to this scenario is that when you return from Mexico via the border little brown kids will be selling black velvet paintings of Dubya to go along with the matching Elvis and Tu Pac set

GravatarMcGOVERN:
One of the great
problems that we've had in the
leadership of this country is that we
have had too many people that were
unwilling to change their mind when they
got new evidence. They, they were afraid
they'd lose face and so they wouldn't
change. Now, I think we need a president
who isn't afraid to say, "I'm gonna
change my mind. I made a mistake." And
sometimes you ought to be able to say to
the people, "This is not going to be
popular, but this is what we're gonna
have to do to save our country." You
have to make those hard decisions.

ANNOUNCER: McGovern, Democrat for the
people. The people are paying for this
campaign with their hard-earned dollars.
Send what you can to: McGovern for
president, Washington, D.C.

McGovern was also unable to convince the public of any connection between the Nixon administration and the June break-in at the Democratic National Committee headquarters in the Watergate apartment complex.

GravatarYeah old George was taken in by
that flight gear, when he heard it
was a G-suit he naturally thought it
meant George Suit.

GravatarYo, not a troll, I swear, and going off-topic, but this needs to be said: You guys need to get your troll-radar (tradar?) recalibrated. Lately there have been lots of posts that were very funny, very tight satire, and they have received the "go away, fucking troll" treatment. I suggest you read it twice before condemning.
That said, the anonymous post at 10:42 is clearly a troll, so good one there.
That's my piece and I have said it.

GravatarI'm more and more convinced, Kerry in a landslide. There is something happening out there. I know newspaper endorsements might not influence many voters, but I do think they reflect public sentiment (except when they're hijacked by asshole Republican owners and publishers who go against editorial board decisions).

Gravatarsyntallic

Youhave some very intresting comments on the skew blog.I like them.

Gravatar"He was not partisan during the hurricanes themselves and that's what people remember," said Handberg.

Wow. Big-hearted Jeb!

"We thought he and his buddies were use all the confusion as a cover to ride around and hunt us for sport, but he didn't. He's got my vote."

Gravatar"In Iraq, we do not fault Mr. Bush for believing, as President Clinton before him believed, that Saddam Hussein possessed weapons of mass destruction..."

"... because then we would have to admit that protestors, bloggers and progressives of all types were smarter and/or more honest about what they 'believed' than he was; and, by extension, smarter and/or more honest about what they 'believed' than we, the Washington Post were. You know... when we were singing God Bless Fucking America at the top of our fucking lungs, to the sound of George Bush ramping up for an obscene and wrongheaded war?"

(Nothing in the WaPo editorial, a good editor can't fix!)

GravatarMore Orwell, I guess Smalfish. Pitch ads to science geeks from an administration that's been hostile to science (not to mention reality).

I did once complain to the History Channel about how it was nothing about war. How about some Howard Zinn's history. They replied testily that they knew their market, thank you, and they wouldn't be changing their format.

Sigh. And don't get me started on the Geography Channel.

You people keep me sane! Thanks.

GravatarYou are correct, sister!

I am complimented on how acutely you have discerned that I am in touch with my feminine side!

(My wife will probably snort at this, given as how I'm plonked down on the couch drinking beer & watching college football...)

GravatarLately there have been lots of posts that were very funny, very tight satire, and they have received the "go away, fucking troll" treatment.
You're right Josh. In fact, there have been people banned from the site for doing exactly that. This can't be discussed though. They will just deny it and claim 'hardly anyone ever gets banned'.

GravatarFloyd the Barber
I tend to think the endorsements are
playing safety. One of the things I
keep harping on is you can see the
change when at a minimum the media
and press start attempting to be
fair. The Express-News endorsement was
very strange, they went for Bush, but
removing that bit, it read like a total
condemnation of the man.
ANd the other thing that keeps bothering
me is that it seems like everything points
to Kerry. The polls do not. I refer back
to the voter registration and turn out. The numbers are obviously an
order of magnitude past the last
several elections. Smething is going
on and the polls just do not seem to
reflect it.
I keep trying to be conservative, but
I keep coming up with Kerry not by
an inch, but by a mile.
Get the prozac out and find some good
therapist numbers for the Republicans.
I think their clock is about to be
cleaned. I can't stand it, I am actually
committing to a prediction.

GravatarGot a friend who works at the Mid-Atlantic Office Depot warehouse, says they just got an order to deliver 5,000 Deluxe Model paper shredders to someplace called "Undisclosed Underground Location."

I take this as an encouraging sign for our side.

GravatarWell, that was a steaming pile.

Way to go, Post. You're making Even The New Republic look liberal.

GravatarSure as hell smells like a Kerry victory, and maybe even a Democrat victory in Congress as well.

Change is in the air, no doubt about it.

GravatarFeels good, doesn't it, EkCenTrik?

Something IS happening.

And it's good for us.

Gravatarthanks, smallfish ... gotta speak their language in wingnut land to show them how stupid they really are. democrats are always so much better at ridicule than the rethugs are. Any idiot who thought iraq was anything but the supercharged oil lobby trying to make a buck out of 9/11 go get your head checked for vacancy.

time for dubya to get on his knees all nixon-like and suck the dick of his secretary of state like trickie dick did with kissinger. i would pay anything to watch the parting shot between powell and dubya just before the rethugs have to hand over the keys to the white house

here's to hoping that cheney, rummy, wolfowitz, feith and perle all get long prison sentences so that they can no longer vote in the red states and get gang raped by homeboys repeatedly while watching the months pass along way too slowly

maybe then ... MAYBE THEN .. they'll know what it felt like to be locked up in Abu Ghraib under their own fascist pretense

fuck them all

Gravatarsnl is dead on.

Gravatar"He was not partisan during the hurricanes themselves and that's what people remember," said Handberg.

Considering how partisan those hurricanes were, that's a strong testament. I mean, the reason we have them hurricanes at all is 'cause of the trial lawyers. John Edwards sued the Atlantic Trough in 1986, right, and ever since then, tropical depressions off the African Coast just can't afford the convection premiums.

GravatarSure as hell smells like a Kerry victory, and maybe even a Democrat victory in Congress as well.

we could get the senate this time, but by 2006 we can get the house if kerry can get some movement in the economy and in iraq

keep your eyes on the prize, bitches! kerry in the white house and a 49-50-1 split in the senate so edwards can cast the deciding 51st vote

Gravataranonymous,

I'm saying this basing my assumption that you're the artist of the 10:42 post. Look, friend, anyone who thinks that the New York Times is a communist rag is someone who (a) hasn't done his or her homework; and (b) just isn't that funny . . . or clever.

I'm the first one to appreciate a clever troll. Be clever and you won't get flagged. Be knee-jerk reactionary by using all the stereotypic code words and you'll be labelled as dumb as a box of hair.

Ciao.

GravatarTo hear president speak

Depending on what side of the fence people are on, crowd control was at an all-time high or low at the Wachovia Arena in Wilkes-Barre Township during President Bush's visit Friday.

A 27-year-old registered Republican and member of the U.S. Army, along with three other people around him, was forced to leave the arena before getting inside.

The Wyoming Valley man who did not want to be identified by name because of his loyalty to his service members is being deployed to Iraq in two weeks. His Army service and status were verified.

He explained that he was attending the event in hopes of finding the right candidate to vote for on Nov. 2.

"I thought seeing Bush would be enough to sway my opinion one way or the other. After today, it definitely has swayed," he said.

While waiting in line, he noticed a stranger standing alone and invited the person to stand with him.

"I didn't think that would be a problem," he said.

It turned out to be.

Individuals from the Bush campaign spotted the individual with the soldier and identified the person as a Democratic supporter.

The spotters, and eventually police, asked the Democratic supporter to remove a jacket, a sweater and some other articles of clothing in what was described as basically a police search.

The soldier said the Democratic supporter did what was asked without any complaint. The person also provided a ticket to the event.

The soldier said that when he asked why the person was being hassled, the spotters said the Democrat's name wasn't on their "master list."

"So I asked if we could see the master list? They said they didn't have it," he said.

The soldier said he stood up for the supporter, but was in no way hostile, because he was there to see the president and hoped to justify voting for him.

Not long after showing his own ticket and being told he wasn't part of the "master list" either, the police asked the soldier to leave. He was told the event was for Bush supporters or undecided voters only.

Until Friday when he left the arena, the soldier was an undecided voter. Now he's voting for Sen. Kerry and volunteering for the Kerry-Edwards campaign.

"I thought the whole Bush message was compassionate conservatism. I didn't see anything compassionate from the Bush people," he said.

[...]
Wilkes-Barre Township Police Chief Robert Brozowski said that close to 150 people monitored the event. State and area police, Secret Service members and the state Game Commission made up many of the workers.
[...]

"What you have to understand," Brozowksi said. "The Republican National Convention had control over the whole arena. They were calling the shots."

[...]

GravatarDarrel Hammond can't seem to do Tweety anymore.

GravatarWhat the fuck is this "I'm going to get banned", "don't question the status quo, or pie will launch into the bitchfest" thing.

Did a bunch of wussy pantywaists show up here?

If you don't like it, get the fuck out.

Gravatarcompletely OT:

Can someone please tell me if I'm being hyper-grammatical? Cuz it really bugs me when sports announcers say shit like "he's got as good an arm as anyone in the league."

Well, according to what I learned in school (and being the daughter of a English teacher), doesn't that really mean that the guy is just average?

Once again, the dumbing down of the American citizen through T.V.

GravatarYou're right Josh. In fact, there have been people banned from the site for doing exactly that. This can't be discussed though. They will just deny it and claim 'hardly anyone ever gets banned'.

Oh, the humanity! And to think this is happening in the United States of America...

What do we want?

More equitable treatment for phony trolls who attempt to make an obscure point by satirizing real trolls!

When do we want it!

Yesterday!

Gravatarbkny,

Damn son, I almost scrolled right past ya. Thought you were Al Champ for jes' a sec.

Gravatar You're right Josh. In fact...

I love it when the moronic brownshirt fucks talk to themselves.

Pretty lonely in that cold, damp, empty boilerroom these days, isn't it, boyo???

GravatarYou're making Even The New Republic look liberal.

what the hell happened to the new republic anyway? I thought they were the torchbearers of the left, until i read some recent articles that look like they'd be more at home in the National Review.

GravatarShorter version, we like Bush, but Kerry owns our home delivery market and no one ever won a war with their readers.

GravatarOrlando Sentinel endorses Kerry!

GravatarCan someone please tell me if I'm being hyper-grammatical? Cuz it really bugs me when sports announcers say shit like "he's got as good an arm as anyone in the league."

Yeah, that's what it means alright. Kind of like "world class," which I guess refers to something that'll be equally appreciated in downtown Manhattan, an Inuit village, or a dinghy in the middle of the the Sargasso Sea.

GravatarAt this point we don't want to have a pow wow, about anything.

At this point, 10 days out from the election, we are only interested in one thing. Winning, and then basking in our glory.

All of the trolls showing up, wanting to participate in civil discussions about how "libs" or "dems" need to tone down rhetoric, for fear of alienating conservatives, is bullshit.

Come back on November 5th. We will be much more civil, with Kerry as President.

Gravatarwhat the hell happened to the new republic anyway?

Martin Peretz then Andrew Sullivan.

One. Two. Kind of like an Al Qaeda attack.

GravatarDid a bunch of wussy pantywaists show up here?
The problem is the person who has the power to 'ban' has been totally humorless at times. People have been disappeared for posts that the majority understood as satire. These are supporters of the site that have been knee-jerked out of here. Meanwhile, the real trolls go untouched.

GravatarSweet Jeebuz,

The WaPo has lost it's soul. The minute you feel the need to defend ANYTHINBG The shrub admin has done to our country is a sad day in farkin' hell. They can kiss my skinny ass!

GravatarPeople have been disappeared for posts that the majority understood as satire.

You seem to have made it through okay, Anonymous.

Oh, and Dave? I love the word "pantywaists." Makes me laugh every time I see it.

Gravatar"he's got as good an arm as anyone in the league."

"Anyone in the league" means anyone, including the best.

GravatarGeorge Bush - he made the trains run on time.

George Bush - He's better than Hitler.

George Bush - ...

GravatarWatertiger one of the most horrible sights in all of God's creation is seeing sports broadcasters rambling in closed caption. That's why they have the crowd noise volume up, so you won't have to hear these guys all that well. It's like hearing a road accident in slow motion.

GravatarI definitely sense the wheels coming off the Bush wagon. (Not that I think Chimpy himself is on the wagon. But anyway.)

And thanks, wwfjd -- new Patsy Keever TV ad now up on the site.

GravatarWhy pretend that this man is sane?
It's too late to ignore the pain.
Put your cards on the table:
Chimpy's passed on unstable.
Let's admit he's a walking bloodstain.

Gravatarthanks SWR. Was Peretz responsible for the 'israel-can-do-no-wrong-ever' stance of TNR or is that just the publisher's view?

GravatarRead this, I think Rolling Stone is endorsing John Kerry too. Excellent article. Excellent:

Gravatar(Sorry, I mismonikered wtfwjd. Blame Mark Bellhorn...)

And the WaPo isn't defending Bush. It's defending the false image of Bush that it created in its editorial columns over the past few years. It's a cover-your-ass endorsement, because anything more enthusiastic would be admitting that the BushCo editorial adulation had been based on nothing but air.

GravatarGeorge Bush -- because God said so.

GravatarMan, that was close!

GravatarPeople have been disappeared for posts that the majority understood as satire.

Well, Bush has a plan to send allo these censored posters to community college.

If you think about it, No Child Left Behind is a plan for making Atrios enforce a better comments policy.

GravatarFloyd the Barber, I think it will be a landslide, too. Things are changing. I live in Virginia. I heard today the polls show Kerry one point behind in the race in Virginia, and Kerry hasn't been campaigning in the state.

This morning, we were supposed to distribute K/E literature in the area. The person who put the packets together prepared enough for the 10-12 people that usually show up to canvass. Over fifty people showed up!

GravatarSmartone - thanks for that. That should be national news, but not holding breath on it, of course.

The who spate of Republicans and newspapers now coming on board with Kerry will not, repeat, will NOT be discussed as a story in itself by the cable and network Powers that Be. To discuss it could give Kerry momentum and, thus, possibly mess up their whole world...

One street, precinct, one county, one state at a time. . .

GravatarPost-election purge, reform appears likely within CIA

One of the aides, whose identity Knight Ridder is not disclosing because he served under cover, has been "going around telling people they are to fire 80 to 90 people" in the Directorate of Operations, the CIA's covert arm, according to a former official.

Maybe one of these spooks will realize that they would risk nothing by listening to Daniel Ellsberg's plea and spill the beans on the whole corrupt Bush regime.

GravatarAnyone else checking the ESPN live updates and seeing WRONG scores on the St. Louis Boston game?

GravatarDebate sketch sucked. Didn't even TOUCH on the Osama-denial.

GravatarIn actually important sports news, Miami beats NC State, 45-31.

Gravataryes, pol ... i have been watching virginia real close since the DNC --- it has huge potential because of the changes in demographics in the northern half of the state -- it's tightening up in a big way -- if the chimp loses virginia the conservatives will have to blow up the GOP take back control of the party

which would be a wonderful thing for sure

GravatarPurges! oh goody! it reminds me of the good old days under our dear leader stalin.

GravatarActually, we're getting stories from CNN saying that newspaper endorsements 'don't matter'. That's how much in the BushCo trough they are.

I want to see the faces of Woofwoof and Wolf when the Nov 2 numbers start coming through. They'll probably get Bill Schneider to say that it's not a scientific poll, since it involves 'real voters', not likely ones as ascertained by Gallup.

GravatarSoviets Might Be Around if Kerry Had Led - Cheney

FARMINGTON, N.M. (Reuters) - The Soviet Union might still exist and Saddam Hussein might dominate the Gulf if Democratic presidential candidate John Kerry had been president in recent years, Vice President Dick Cheney said on Saturday.

Cheney told supporters that Kerry had run for the U.S. Senate in the 1980s on a promise to do away with many of the weapons that U.S. President Ronald Reagan used to end the Cold War.

``So if John Kerry had been in charge, maybe the Soviet Union would still be in business,'' President Bush's running mate said on a campaign trip to the swing state of New Mexico.

He also suggested that a Kerry presidency in the 1990s might have allowed former Iraqi President Saddam Hussein to remain a global threat.

OK everyone--let's go get these f*ckers!!!

To the ramparts!

GravatarOne of the aides, whose identity Knight Ridder is not disclosing because he served under cover...

Only because KR doesn't have Novak on staff. Otherwise, the guy would be toast.

GravatarPost-election purge, reform appears likely within CIA

Well, I can think of one person who'll be purges. Name rhymes with 'Sorta Dross'. But I do expect the CIA to leak like sieves between now and Nov 2nd. And State, too. The prospect of Wolfowitz as SecState isn't going to give anyone at Foggy Bottom reason to cheer.

GravatarAll these publicatioins comming out for Kerry is a good thing, but I have to believe that all those that are voting junior are claiming that the media is liberal and will start to claim it from the highest yard arms to whoever will listen.

And should junior take this election,we can be assured the media will not make these "mistakes" again, ever.

GravatarSoviets Might Be Around if Kerry Had Led - Cheney

'Hitler Might Be Around If Kerry Had Led - Cheney'

'British Might Be Around If Kerry Had Led - Cheney'

This is the sound of defeat, people.

(And those weapons: didn't a certain Richard Cheney support their dismantling when he was at Defense?)

GravatarAnd should junior take this election,we can be assured the media will not make these "mistakes" again, ever.

Should such an unlikely event happen, there'll be Fox News, the Washington Times and The Free Republic as your sole choices of media.

GravatarHussein might dominate the Gulf if Democratic presidential candidate John Kerry had been president in recent years, Vice President Dick Cheney said on Saturday.

Ha what Cheney doesn't say is how things would have turned out if he himself had been running the country. All the major cities in the US would have been obliterated by some ICBMs by now. The one thing i give Reagan credit for is that despite the 'evil empire' rhetoric he knew to open up to Gorbachev and support him through his reforms, instead of being a bullheaded moron.

GravatarAnd the Red Sox WIN!!!!!!

GravatarSox win game one despite Kerry's voting record -- Cheney

GravatarThe NY Times has finally recognized Michael Badnarikas a threat to Bush:
------------
Mr. Badnarik is the presidential candidate of the Libertarian Party, which says he could “Naderize” Mr. Bush. A recent Zogby/Reuters national poll showed him tied with Ralph Nader at one percentage point each - not much, but possibly critical. Unlike Mr. Nader, Mr. Badnarik is on the ballot of every battleground state except New Hampshire.

“If we have a rerun of Florida 2000 in Pennsylvania, Michael Badnarik could be the kingmaker by drawing independent and Republican votes from Bush,” said Larry Jacobs, director of the 2004 Election Project at the Humphrey Institute of the University of Minnesota, which has been tracking third-party candidates.
-------------
Democrats should work to make sure Republicans know that they have a conservative alternative to Bush.

Gravatarbah, i meant to quote the soviet part

GravatarThe local Denver (CO) television news just announced that the Denver Post will endorse Bush tomorrow. Darn.

GravatarSoviets Might Be Around if Kerry Had Led - Cheney

Oooh, I have a response for that. How about something like:

Islamic Terrorists Might Have Successfully Attacked the United States if Bush Had Been President

Wait, you mean they did? Well then. I guess Darth Cheney should just FUCKING SHUT HIS POISONOUS FILTHY MOUTH.

GravatarIf Dick Cheney had been president in the 1990's then...
1. eugenics would have been the law of the land
and
2. apartheid would have been hot

GravatarSoviets Might Be Around if Kerry Had Led - Cheney

If Cheney had been around in 1776, the colonies would have declared independence from Mexico.

If Bush had been around in 1917, the US would have taken the Emperor Jones, dead or alive.

If Wolfowitz had been around in 1860, we would have had a civil war with Japan.

Gravatarexcellent comeback, Seraphiel. I'm glad you're on our team (whatever that means)

GravatarJon Stewart on C-Span now. Rerun of a press conference/luncheon from 10/14.

GravatarSoviets Might Be Around if Kerry Had Led - Cheney

In some of my more optimistic moments (thanks to you lot), I find myself wondering whether, if BushCo. loses, whether Cheney is going to make a last stand in his underground bunker, kinda like Hitler did, snarling out of that one side of his mouth, "Err, death! Mushroom clouds! Err, global tests! Err, terror, Hussein!"

GravatarHere's my blog-warming gift to Tucker Eskew's new blog, I only wish i could find that little "tm" ascii thing.

On the post about Kerry's hunting trip,
entitled "Kerry's goose is cooked":

So what if Kerry shot one little Goose.

When a real man like "Big Time" "Swinging" Dick "Dick" Cheney goes hunting, he does it up right!

No time waster he, Mr. Cheney eschews all that "traipsing through the hinterlands" nonsense.

Just shoot the birds in the closed environs from whence they came.

Take about 500 Pheasants, all pen-raised so they won't move around too much, then release them from nets about 10 yards from where you're sitting and BLAM BLAM BLAM!!!

GravatarI am digging this sucker eskew blog -- what a bunch of freaks -- my last post:

Please give up, liburals, you intellectual elite types. Saddam was a huge threat to our precious bodily fluids because he would have infected all the oil we need and there would have been a noxious vapor every time we started our SUV's that would pollute the earth and kill our Christian children. Look out your windows, all the leaves are turning reddish brown and that's because Saddam was using WMD on our communities and choking off the air supply. Saddam was like the Red Menace to our environment, using powerful energy lobbies to rewrite our environmental policies so that our water and air would get so polluted that we couldn't breathe or drink water again. He was secretly releasing mercury in the water to poison our fish and make pregnancies hard to maintain - he was aborting fetuses all over the Christian nation and for that all islamic swine must be vaporized to protect our bodily fluids.

GravatarTucker erased my last blog post there- so here's the new one so it stays on record...(My Frist post there was about Kerry with cooked goose and Bush with Cook who is French - which was worse to the wingnuts?)
No hostage taking terrorists should determine the outcome of an election. See also Jimmy Carter. Nice of Bush Sr to delay a hostage release to achieve that goal at talks in Paris of all places...IOKIYAR.

Don't like the French? Give back the statue of Liberty and forget about their backing of our revolution which drove them broke. Don't like Muslims? Stop using algebraic math in construction. It's really quite easy to only claim what we want. Sons of Abraham are under God's covenant for you true belivers.

Really it's easy to live on a flat earth. Americans never beheaded people over religion (not counting the heathen Native Americans) we simply burned them at the stake. And the old testament days of killing the infants of those non Hebrew ethnic groups on the promised land is something 'god' approved?

GravatarOctober 06, 2004
US Vice-President Dick Cheney, as defence secretary in 1992

AND the question in my mind is how many additional American casualties is Saddam Hussein worth? And the answer is not very damned many. So I think we got it right, both when we decided to expel him from Kuwait [in 1991], but also when the president made the decision that we'd achieved our objectives and we were not going to go get bogged down in the problems of trying to take over and govern Iraq ...

All of a sudden you've got a battle you're fighting in a major built-up city, a lot of civilians are around, significant limitations on our ability to use our most effective technologies and techniques. Once we had rounded him up and gotten rid of his government, then the question is what do you put in its place? You know, you then have accepted the responsibility for governing Iraq.

Detainees Secretly Taken Out Of Iraq: Practice Is Called Breach of Protections

At the request of the CIA, the Justice Department drafted a confidential memo that authorizes the agency to transfer detainees out of Iraq for interrogation -- a practice that international legal specialists say contravenes the Geneva Conventions.
...

"The overall thrust of the Convention is to keep from moving people out of the country and out of the protection of the Convention," said former senior military attorney Scott Silliman, executive director of Duke University's Center on Law, Ethics and National Security. "The memorandum seeks to create a legal regime justifying conduct that the international community clearly considers in violation of international law and the Convention."

The wingnuts, of course, will applaud this. Nuke Fallujah!!!

Some schmuck got lost after Tenet made a special plea to Rumsfeld to hide him from the Red Cross on the basis of his horribleness.

But will anyone but the dim bulbs feel safer now??

Rashul, defense and intelligence officials noted, had not once been interrogated since he was brought back into Iraq. His current status is unknown.

GravatarSNL finally spoofs Bush.
Great job rambling into incoherence. Jude Law did a jab at Blair that will certainly get play back in England. Jude as Blair marvels at how Bush can still be popular despite the lies and exaggerations about Iraq.
Blair is barely hanging on right now, and the idea of getting more troops involved is very unpopular.

GravatarEm, post it, please. I'd like to see it.

GravatarWhat are your plans?

I'll be on a 3 day natural high after Kerry wins, supplemented with lotsa alcohol and herbal supplements.

Howsa 'bout you?

GravatarOh Christ Theodoric! Water on my keyboard!!

GravatarIf Kerry had led in 1776, we'd all be speaking English right now.

GravatarBlair shat in his drink this week by authorising the redeployment of the Black Watch. Law's just reflecting this sentiment. If any of them are killed, or even hurt in lieu of Americans, he's going to suffer. And if, as many Brits fear, their own soldiers are the recipients of 'friendly fire', Blair is toast.

Not to mention that it lumps the Brits in the south with the Americans further north, which is something the British officers have tried to avoid ever since the invasion.

(That said, I didn't see SNL, because it usually bores the hell out of me. Will seek out a Bittorrent...)

GravatarI fully plan on the natural Kerry high too. But it's a Saturday, so maybe I'll drag Thersites out to dinner. But good wine and President Kerry will do me just fine, thanks.

GravatarIf Kerry had led in 1776, we'd all be speaking English right now.

And we'd be driving on the wrong side of the road.

GravatarThat was the most pathetic endorsement ever.

Who taught these ya-hoos to write?

Worse yet, why have they forsaken thinking?

Holy fuck.

Meanwhile, so typical that the Dems have decided not to appeal the provisional ballot bullshit that's going on in Ohio. Wouldn't be prudent.
Shit.
Why can't we just fucking fight?

GravatarOT : I think the O'Reilly transcript is incorrect. I can't see how he would be talking about a falafel. I'm sure once the tapes come out, we'll hear him talking about how his phallus fell. The phallus in question quite obviously would be his personal dildo. And seeing how he is such a big asshole, how could any dildo ever stay up his ass?

GravatarWhy the Des Moines Register endorsement of John Kerry is so much more important than WaPo.

GravatarRepublican lobbyist for banking committees told me today that colleagues have been recruited by the GOP to go to precincts in FL and OH with high minority pop. and pretend to be taking pictures of voters. "The camera doesn't need to have film", they were told. Just wear a suit (these are mostly male, aren't they all?) and look official. The stated goal to intimidate... Creeps.

GravatarI thought the endorsement was utterly incoherent...but I am a partisan.
Perhaps it would appeal better to the Independent voter who subscribes to the fact that they are choosing between the lesser of two evils.
I admire Sen. John F. Kerry and my vote is FOR him.

Ah, yes, sorry to get to this point so late, but one of my life's lessons occurred when I got older and realized that most people were not laughing AT Archie Bunker, as I had believed as a youngster, but instead where laughing WITH Archie Bunker.

That was when I realized that all was lost.

Oh, and they elected Reagan. And I knew we were fucked.

This is

prima facie

proof that your new media is completely fucked. Yesterday Chancellor Brown gathered the clans; unions, PLP, Labour wonks and told them he wanted to reestablish Labour's radical agenda. A close ally of his, Clare Short, who resigned (too late) over Iraq has leaked what happened in discussions over intelligence in the Observer newspaper, Patricia Hewitt, heretofore a Blair loyalist turns up at the Brown conference to talk about "reestablishing trust"...

Blair is dead meat, and the US public finds this out from SNL.

"Tell Tony Blair we're on our own!"

Yes, George. You're on your own.

Yeah dude, I wanna get involved. Sorry dude, I'm all burnt out and sick of this shit. Fuck you man, fuck you all. You can't have an effect. The man controls it all. SHUT THE FUCK UP MAN.

GravatarPlease go take a look at this ad put together by TruthandHope.org (the people who won VT for Dean during the primaries).

Weigh in on the discussion over it, por favor.

I think it's incredibly powerful. I felt literally nauseated after watching it, but I also think there's a possibility of backlash.

The ad juxtaposes Bush's joking about looking for WMD with images from the war. Simple concept that everybody's seen before, but what's different here is what they've done with the accompanying audio. They use gunfire to jolt you into paying attention (there's no way you're not going to stop whatever you're doing when this starts), and it escalates... it's really intense.

I'm hoping this gets seen by a wide swath of the blogosphere in the next 24 hours b/c they're planning on running it in swing states for the entire week running up to the election.

GravatarI hadn't seen Lime Rickey on the last few days. Good to see him back and in his finest form.

GravatarOT: With electronic voting - if it is detected that there was a discrepancy or computer crash at a particular location, don't they have a record of who voted, and they could contact those people and double checked what they voted, if the need arises? GravatarJust heard on TV and its on CNN that 49 Iraqi soldiers were found shot dead by insurgents today. What a catastrophic success it has been for all the parties involved except for Bush.

GravatarBodies of 49 Iraqi soldiers found

The bodies of 49 Iraqi army soldiers have been found near the town of Baquba, north-east of Baghdad, according to police.

The bodies were laid out in four rows with about 12 bodies in each row, Gen Walid Al-Assawi, commander of the Diyala provincial police, has said.

GravatarIt does not matter who wins the vote count on Nov. 2. The thugs occupying the White House will try to steal this election. We currently have a criminal administration that cannot afford to lose for fear of facing a flurry of felony indictments. Bush will still have 2 months to furiously hand out pardons, but I don't believe he can pardon himself. I'm sure the fix is in for Karl, Condi, Cheney and the rest though. That is why they will stop at nothing, even lawbreaking. They're already criminals, so they have nothing to lose, and everything to gain by trying to rig the election. If they get caught, pardons await, and Bush follows Reagan's lead and plays dumb.

In summary: The Bush administration has nothing to lose by breaking every law they please in trying to "win" this election.

GravatarAny increased violence in Iraq in the next week is just proof that the insurgents are trying to help Kerry win the election. It has nothing to do with the US occupying their country and killing many civilians. Muslims don't care about that stuff. They like it when you treat them harshly. They know that Great White Father Bush means only the best for them and their families. Well, most of them know that. Once we bomb and kill several thousand more Iraqis, perhaps they'll all learn. If not, we'll just keep bombing.

But, as I said, none of that is causing the increased violence in Iraq. It's all about the election and is being caused by John Kerry. Oh, and by his wife Teresa too. Terrorists really like Teresa. In a poll published in Terrorist Today, Teresa Heinz-Kerry was picked overhelmingly as favorite to be next first lady, with Bill Clinton running a close second. So, you see, it's all about John Kerry and his undermining of democracy by speaking out against President Bush during wartime. It has nothing to do with Bush's incompetence or violent suppression of the Iraqi populace.

GravatarThis will not end on Nov 2

But at least we will be able to see the beginning of the end.

My gut tells me it will be a blow out.

Kerry will take it in a landslide and then the real work will begin. Cleaning up the mess these asshats have created.

GravatarI am truly disgusted. My home town newspaper
just endorsed the chimpster.
Apparently their logic was that even though
he totally sucks ass,
surely he'll make changes in a second
term and do much better.
Never mind that he's incapable of admitting
to a mistake or of changing his puny
mind. Never mind that this band of thugs
and criminals would take winning the
election as a vindication of every policy.
Never mind that after the election they'll
move on their enemies with a zeal and
vindictiveness that would shock Richard
Nixon.

Bastards. All of them bastards.

GravatarI don't know if anybody else has made this point, but if it has been made already, forgive me.

The newspaper endorsements are not important because they persuade people how to vote; they don't.

Newspapers sense where their readership is, and tend not to want to end up on the wrong side. E.g. Sun's endorsement of Blair in 1997.

This is true of local papers even more so. The Wash Post, NYT, LA Times etc. create a media story, but these endorsements in big local papers are reports on Kerry's victory, it's just that the polls won't measure that until later(if they do at all).

It might be interesting to correlate local newspaper endorsements and shifts in polls.I really believe it's a harbinger. It's not as though the editorials in these papers aren't fairly hard-hitting, they're all tacitly ridiculing the Bush myth pretty comprehensively.

This points to a blowout.

Why after 3 years haven't we had more terrorists on trial, convicted and in jail?

Why are we only able to kill them?

If we killed 70% of terrorists, wouldn't we have to know how many terrorists there were in all?

GravatarBasil Faith- interestingly enough, that same issue of Terrorist Today named me the "Sexiest Man in the World" according to a poll of young Syrian women. At least they got one story right.

GravatarI predicted that if WaPo endorsed Kerry, it would be tepid, because who they really wanted to endorse was Bush, but to do so would make them look as if they weren't a member of the reality-based community.
Still, that endorsement of Kerry sucked, mostly because WaPo sucks.

LEAD EDITORIAL

October 24, 2004

The case against re-electing George W. Bush is very strong. But the case for electing Sen. John Kerry of Massachusetts is not as clear-cut as we would have liked. That leaves voters with a tough choice this year.

In bringing the nation to war against Iraq but not being prepared to win the peace, in cutting taxes even as expenses mushroomed, in violating basic tenets of civil liberties and international norms, in choosing to pursue a right-wing social agenda, Bush has made us less secure in the war on terrorism, created budget deficits that will burden our children and grandchildren, and violated his pledge to be a uniter, not a divider.

This president has been unwilling to admit to any of his mistakes or to hold any of his subordinates accountable for their mistakes. That is deeply disappointing.

Give Bush full credit for leading the nation after the trauma of Sept. 11, 2001, and for being an unusually strong-willed president. But he has too often substituted righteous certitude for factual analysis. Ideology has too often come before reality. And for all his claims to be a gutsy leader, Bush has been unwilling to ask the nation as a whole for even the smallest sacrifice, even during a time of war. Four more years of this kind of leadership is unappealing.

Is Kerry fit for duty?

Kerry is a flawed candidate. The Democrat has run an uneven campaign and has struck us too often as taking the politically expedient path. He has frequently had trouble connecting personally with voters. He has waffled and obfuscated his position on the war in Iraq.

Some of it is Kerry's proclivity for complexity, not necessarily a bad thing. But part of it, too, is his proclivity to have it both ways on issues. That is a bad trait. In fact, it has cost him dearly in this campaign. If he loses, it will be because voters, even those disillusioned with Bush, do not believe he is a strong, resolute leader. The major question about Kerry is whether he will be assertive in the face of grave challenges or whether he will allow himself to be bogged down in nuance, paralyzed by analysis and fear of political controversy.

But Kerry is a serious man with strong analytical skills. From his days at Yale, to his service in Vietnam and his subsequent protest of the war there, to his work as an assistant district attorney to his tenure as a United States senator, he has been earnest and diligent, always doing his homework, always being prepared. When the chips were down, whether it was when he was under attack in Vietnam or when he had to vote to raise taxes to close the budget deficit, Kerry has demonstrated streaks of decisiveness and has been willing to take unpopular stands. And he has a deep understanding of national security affairs and a determination to help this country rebuild its alliances in the world. That is critical for the war on

Gravatar... terrorism.

Do we agree with all the positions Kerry has taken? No. He has grandstanded on trade issues despite a strong record on free trade through the years. He has committed to not changing any part of Social Security, when most experts will tell you a slight change in how it is funded or in its benefits could add years to its solvency. And if you add up all his proposals, they will break the bank.

A huge job for Bush

Bush's record in the past four years is troubling.

The deteriorating situation in Iraq is Bush's responsibility. According to members of his own Republican party, the lack of postwar planning can only be called incompetent, and the willful blindness exhibited by the president and his top officials in the months leading up to the war borders on malfeasance. The result is that the United States faces an incredibly difficult task just trying to stabilize Iraq and prevent it from becoming another broken state and terrorist base. Washington also finds itself alienated from some of its most reliable and important allies and vilified through much of the world for what is considered its unilateral, arrogant foreign policy.

Can't do it all

Bush's conviction that he can wage war in Iraq and still cut taxes across the board defies all the laws of modern economics. Indeed, his mismanagement of the nation's finances exhibits the same willful blindness to economic realities that his unilateral pursuit of war in Iraq did on the foreign front. He refuses to recognize that his plan to cut taxes well into the future only compounds the day of reckoning when the baby-boom generation begins to retire and the bills for boomers' retirement and medical care come due. Bush has turned economic logic on its head, cutting revenues and increasing expenses, the largest increase in government spending in a quarter of a century. Leaving the bills to our children and grandchildren is not only economically wrong, it is morally wrong.

Wasted chances to unite

But even more than his specific policy failures, Bush's failure to bring this bitterly divided nation together may be his greatest fault.

He had two golden opportunities to heal the deep differences that divide the nation. The first was when former Vice President Al Gore delivered his magnanimous concession speech after the bitter 2000 post-election battle. Bush could have seized that moment to define a new center of American politics, to fulfill his promise to be a compassionate conservative. Rather, he chose to scrap arms control treaties, appoint the most conservative-leaning judges possible, follow the Christian right social policy agenda, slash regulation of business and the environment, and cut taxes across the board, especially for the wealthy.

He had another opportunity to bring the nation together after the terrible events of 9/11. But just a few months later, the president made the decision to invade Iraq.

A war of choice

We believed ther

GravatarThis quote in the WaPo grabbed my attention especially:

" A recession that was gathering as he took office, and the economic blow delivered by the Sept. 11 attacks, would have turned surplus into deficit under the best of circumstances."

Is that demonstrable, knowable, or right? My initial reaction was to say "horseshit," but on reflection I have to wonder if anyone (credible) has already crunched the numbers on this one.

I think between the tax cuts and the multi-billion dollar tax policy reversals we could still have been well into surplus territory (projected, of course) but I'm not an economist, either.

Gravatar...

A war of choice

We believed there was a strong case to be made for removing Saddam Hussein. But we were dismayed that Bush chose to use deceptive claims and questionable intelligence to make his case. And then he relied on the best-case scenario for the postwar period. This was a blunder of historic proportions. The impression now, from many accounts, is that the administration had made the decision to go to war by the summer of 2002 and that all the diplomatic maneuvering that followed was nothing but an exercise to provide political cover.

The American people will support committing their young to war if it is recognized as a last resort. The more we learn of how the Bush administration manipulated the nation, the more there is a sense that this was a war of choice. The result is that the nation is as divided now as any time in its recent history. It didn't have to be this way. It shouldn't be this way.

The wholesale violation of civil liberties should also disturb all citizens. Yes, in a time of peril there is an absolute need to protect ourselves. But getting the balance right between security and civil liberties is critical. Bush's attorney general, John Ashcroft, has gone way too far toward the security side. For instance, the Bush administration claimed the right to indefinitely imprison any American citizen it labeled an enemy combatant - even one taken into custody in the United States - without bringing any criminal charges or allowing access to counsel or any court. That flies in the face of 200 years of checks and balances in this nation. The doctrine was rejected by the Supreme Court.

The president also condoned the Pentagon's decision to ignore the Geneva Conventions in the treatment of prisoners taken to Guantanamo Bay, flouting this nation's long-term adherence to international norms of behavior. If the United States doesn't uphold those norms, who will? The abuses at Abu Ghraib prison stem, at least in part, from those decisions.

The question of responsibility

Given the nature of our campaigns today - the sound bites, negative advertising, easy demagoguery of issues and all the rest of it - voting for one candidate or the other requires a leap of faith. We know they won't keep all their promises and they can't solve all the ills that they have described or, for that matter, start all the programs they propose without bankrupting the country. The question is who will act more responsibly when the tough decisions have to be made? Who will put the long-term interests of the nation above his immediate political benefit? Who will act to forge coalitions and be willing to compromise to help bring this very divided nation together at a time of peril?

In our opinion the answers to those questions, on balance, favor Kerry.

While little noted, Kerry has pledged to pull back or cancel programs that would make it impossible for him to cut the budget deficit in half during his first term. He has als

Gravatarfrom the pittsburgh post-gazette:

Editorial: Kerry for president / The damage by Bush demands a fresh start
Sunday, October 24, 2004
Four years ago Al Gore won the popular vote and George Bush, after a Supreme Court decision, became president. The new chief executive promised to be a uniter, not divider. So much for that pledge.
It gets worse. Since 2001, the incumbent has been lacking on foreign policy, national security, the economy, safeguarding constitutional rights and maintaining credibility at home and abroad.
In all of these categories, the Post-Gazette believes the United States needs a fresh start and that John Kerry can provide such leadership. A President Kerry will make the country safer because he will not take his eye off Osama bin Laden and al-Qaida. A President Kerry will look after the workers of America because he is concerned about both the haves and the have-nots.
George W. Bush's approach to the economy has been to take care of the rich, his political base; give the companies run by his campaign contributors free rein; and tell other Americans that his policies will improve their situation, eventually.
The well-to-do continue to get monster tax cuts and will get more if he is re-elected; the middle class get token savings. The economy has bled jobs during this administration; not enough have been created to outweigh the 1 million that have been lost; the outsourcing of American work overseas has proceeded without discouragement.
Sen. Kerry, as a Democrat and because of his strong labor ties, will certainly be more responsive to Americans' need for work. As president, Mr. Kerry will also be more likely than Mr. Bush to rein in the catastrophic deficit that has raged in the past four years. A Republican-controlled White House and Congress have managed to erase the budget surpluses of the Clinton era, which could have put Social Security and Medicare on sound footing for years to come. Instead, Mr. Bush and his policies have driven the U.S. government trillions of dollars deeper in the hole, all in a few short years.
Voters should reject the notion that the current administration "inherited" a bad economy or was the victim on 9/11 of previous White House policies. The state in which this nation finds itself can be traced to a single misfortune: four years of the Bush administration.

Gravatarpost-gazette, cont'd:

One thing that's clear is the relationship between the American economy and its situation in the world. Look at the price of gasoline, now at the painful threshold of $2 a gallon. Mr. Bush's foreign policy -- making war on Iraq, doing little to seek peace in the Middle East and rattling the nerves of oil-producing countries -- has undoubtedly boosted the cost of gas and fuel oil to all Americans.
A President Kerry would change all that. George Bush sneers at him for his promise to draw other nations into America's decision-making process. At the same time, it is clear that the United States will not gain the help of others in pursuing America's interests if it remains contemptuous of their views on matters of common interest. America has always worked best with allies.
Another key consideration is which candidate would strike the better balance between taking the necessary steps to keep America safe and preserving the sacred ground of America's freedoms. On that and the related question of who would appoint more broad-minded Supreme Court justices, the answer is John Kerry. The re-election of Mr. Bush, and the possible continuation of a Republican Congress, accompanied by a Supreme Court stuffed with Bush appointees, would result in the three branches of government controlled by like-minded people. Say farewell to independence, diversity and the multiplicity of viewpoints in public policy that make America strong.
Fortunately, the Kerry movement is gathering steam. He is stronger in Pennsylvania and gaining with our neighbors in West Virginia, where more voters are coming to believe he is the better choice on jobs, health care and homeland security. Even newspapers that endorsed George W. Bush four years ago have changed their minds in 2004; the Seattle Times and The Oregonian of Portland switched to the Democrat this time, while the Tampa Tribune backed away from Mr. Bush and made no endorsement.
There is no doubt that Americans have gone from a generally happy time in the 1990s to four years of deficit, discord and disappointment. We would pose the same question that President Reagan asked famously in the heat of his own campaign: Are you better off now than you were four years ago?
Relatively few, we think, would answer that with "yes." If your answer is "no" or "not sure," then we have a president for you. The Post-Gazette enthusiastically endorses John Kerry. It's definitely time for a fresh start.

GravatarWhere can I find info on Bukkake Hannity? Is there a web site?

Gravatarthis one surprised me < HREF="http://www.orlandosentinel.com/news/opinion/orl-edped124102404oct24,0,6815713.story?coll=orl-home-headlines">Orlando Sentinel endorses Kerry.

Mr. Kerry would bolster national security by adding 40,000 troops to the overstretched U.S. military, and doubling its special forces. He would accelerate the program that secures nuclear material in the former Soviet Union before it can fall into the hands of terrorists.

Mr. Kerry would enhance homeland security by doing more to protect ports and other vulnerable facilities. Unlike Mr. Bush, he understands that government accountability and civil liberties must not be needlessly compromised in the name of the war on terrorism.

In sum, we believe Mr. Kerry would be a more bipartisan and effective leader than Mr. Bush.

In the Nov. 2 general election, the Sentinel endorses John Kerry for president of the United States.

they bash bush pretty well too.

That is critical for the war on terrorism.

GravatarI HATE linking to that little bitch drudge's stories but this morning he links to a guardian OP/ED that is just amazing. The writer closes with:

"On November 2, the entire civilised world will be praying, praying Bush loses. And Sod's law dictates he'll probably win, thereby disproving the existence of God once and for all. The world will endure four more years of idiocy, arrogance and unwarranted bloodshed, with no benevolent deity to watch over and save us. John Wilkes Booth, Lee Harvey Oswald, John Hinckley Jr - where are you now that we need you?"

Just amazing.

Gravatarsorry, that's part of the Newsday editorial, continued here.

But just a few months later, the president made the decision to invade Ira

GravatarThe question of responsibility

He has also associated himself closely with Robert Rubin, the secretary of the Treasury during the Clinton administration, who has a reputation for fiscal sobriety. Rubin would probably serve in a Kerry cabinet or become the next chairman of the Federal Reserve.

A fresh start

Bush's presidency has been too radical and too often wrong. Kerry will have a fresh chance to bring the country together, to help heal the wounds of the past 12 years when partisan bickering has reached historic highs.

Kerry will face the same tough choices that Bush will in trying to stabilize Iraq. Indeed, for all their arguments over what went wrong in Iraq, both Bush and Kerry have fairly similar prescriptions for what has to be done now to shore up the interim government and gain control of the security situation. Kerry says he can do a better job of bringing the allies back to the table and into Iraq. Maybe. It certainly is worth a try. He will have more goodwill from the allies than Bush.

Kerry will also bring to government a group of advisers much more committed to nation building than the Bush administration has been. After all the blunders of the Bush administration, a fresh start, with a different team, is worth a try there.

Repairing the damage

Kerry is not an ideologue, and his desire for success makes him more likely to compromise and find common ground with his opposition. He is the one candidate who can begin to heal the deeply bitter divisions in the nation. Bush cannot and will not do that. By his own words, he is what he is.

Newsday endorses John F. Kerry for president of the United States.

GravatarOne of the things these weak-kneed editorialists are doing is setting up a way to absolutely savage Kerry once he's elected. We endorsed him but.
Something to watch for in the future.

GravatarCNN reports that at least 51 soldiers of the New Iraqi Army were ambushed and killed while riding UNARMED in three MINIBUSES after graduating from training.
What is the point of an Iraqi army if it isn’t ARMED? Why send such an obviously attractive and vulnerable target out unguarded? The message we are sending is that we can’t even protect the ARMY! What is the effect on civilian morale of this gross incompetence?
Question: Isn’t this exactly the kind of incompetence and lack of planning that Kerry should use to make the case that Bush has bungled Iraq and needs to be replaced? I think the average American will see that this kind of attack was foreseeable and that sending unarmed soldiers out in large groups in unarmored minibuses in a war zone is INSANE!

GravatarIt's a cunning plan. You say you're recruiting an Iraqi army, and then poor schmucks who believe you turn up for a half-hour of drilling with a wooden gun. Then you pack them on a bus which has to go through an Insurgent-infested area. They get stopped and massacred.

When nobody comes forward anymore, the males of the right age who are left must all be insurgents, so you can kill of them.

The sad truth is, one day the schmucks will stop coming forward, and everyone will all be in the insurgency.

GravatarOMG! Is anyone listening to NPR right now? Interviewing a Floridian Bush born-again supporter at the "Eye of the Tiger" rally who "couldn't quite remember what the President said," was so impressed by her candidate "descending from the blue sky, all those helicopters, I just started crying."

Nice. If you like the scene so much, why don't you just write in Tom Cruise for president, you f**king moron?

Gravatarthe result to endorse Kerry is correct and we'll take it, but their analysis, particularly its praise for the Bushliar is f*cked. May WaPo wither and die post haste.

GravatarOne thing we will all look back on and laugh about come January 21st is that there WERE some fucking nutcases our there, today, in the 21st century, who actually believed that george fucking bush is the son of god and sent to America to being about god's will.

They really fucking do.

GravatarFrankly I'm shocked?

GravatarThe Dumbing Down of The Electorate:

by Jason Gooljar

I once heard a political commentator call the democratic nominee for President too “wordy” or too professorial. This was in comparison to Mr. Bush who is said to be the average blue collar person's candidate. When this point was made it struck a chord with me. It saddened me to know that our nation trumpets the attitude of ignorance.

When did it ever get to the point where intellectuals were looked at with disdain? When did it come to a union of nascar dads and the rural image of Kansas? While the media can be to blame for some of this problem I also see something else within the country. How many people do you know actually read anymore? I often hear people say I don't read, or I just watch television to get the news I don't bother to read the newspapers. When you stop seeking knowledge you end up becoming a slave to what is fed to you through one outlet. You then become part of the echo chamber regurgitating falsehoods not looking into the details or questioning anything. I find it disturbing to know the current leader of the free world is not the least intellectually curious.

It seems for too long even children in schools across America felt that they were doing something wrong when they got good grades. They were ridiculed by their peers for being too smart. This way of thinking seems to carry on into our society even as we grow into adults. It it is this way of thinking that we must combat. This virus can be cured and it is also present in lower income communities where it is the most powerful weapon in keeping people down.

We must put an end to the backlash culture that attacks the professors of this nation as being the “liberal elite” that is out of touch with the real world. In truth it is those who choose to remain ignorant that become out of touch and end up in the control of others. It is clear that something is wrong when you hear of the average American attention span. We are capable of being more than just a commercial nation where everything must hit us within the first five seconds otherwise we loose interest. We can be more than just followers of reality television and the latest gossip or fad. In closing the true elite are keeping us as a nation from realizing what is being done. We are being spoon fed an ideology and a way of thinking. The true elite is telling you to put down that book and brainwash yourself with another episode of survivor and for news watch Fox with it's MTV style quick cuts and flashy graphics. If there were to be a motto for those who realize the truth and carry it out on the public for their gain, it would be “Keep them stupid and you will control all”. We now return you to your regularly scheduled programming...

my apologies for the Young Frankenstein error last night. It was late, I was under the influence of a hearty dose of Nyquil. (Was around a sick yet still adorable child earlier in the week).

Gravatardumb question of the day:

Daniel Schorr just brought up a good point. Why has Judith Miller been subpoenaed and held in contempt of court (separate issues of her competence aside) while Novak hasn't even admitted to having been subpoenaed? He's the one who outed Plame. Can his partisanship and the attendant protection be any more obvious?

Okay, I realize that that's more than one question, and they're all really rhetorical. It just continues to piss me off.

GravatarMy local fish wrap, the Shreveport Times, endorsed Kerry this morning.

Gravatar"He [Kerry] is the one candidate who can begin to heal the deeply bitter divisions in the nation."

there is no healing the country. repukelicans have been attacking viciously for 20 years; its is the essence of their success; it energizes their "base"; it has become entertaining sport for them.

There is nothing serious about their approach to governing; they are 100% about attaining and asserting power - they have nothing whatsoever to do with solving problems or helping people.

They have a thoroughly corrupt platformn that most would be against if they knew what it was. To maintian the secrecy of their aims, they distract by attacking. If the attack were to stop, their true nature is revealed.

If Kerry were somehow to be POTUS, the repukelican assault on him will make what they did to Clinton look like a friendly tif.

GravatarElaine,

That is what is so scary about these rallies. Bush gets to play God and Tom Cruise all wrapped up in one (and he probably believes he's both, although I've never seen Tom Cruise fall off a Segway) and his acolytes get sucked into the incredibly manipulative and hambone histrionics of the scene.

There is absolutely no way that the Rovians don't see the parallels. You'd have to be blind AND stupid not to.

GravatarIt's a thoughtful endorsement.

You can read it there. Once it pulls up the homepage, look to the left on the homepage where it reads "Local News", scroll down to "Editorial."

GravatarOh, and one more thing: at least Tom Cruise, whom I don't particularly care for, has the balls to do his own stunts.

Candidates Hit Key States With Election Still a Tossup

By Mike Allen and Lois Romano
Washington Post Staff Writers
Sunday, October 24, 2004; Page A09

EXCERPTS:

GOP officials who talked to Bush-Cheney campaign leaders said the leaders have grown more worried about Ohio, Florida and other key states where Bush lacks a lead with just 10 days until the election. A poll by Ohio University's Scripps Survey Research Center, completed Thursday night, found Kerry leading 49 percent to 43 percent among registered voters, with a margin of error of five percentage points.

Sen. Pete V. Domenici (R-N.M.), campaigning with Vice President Cheney in northwestern New Mexico, told the crowd that the GOP ticket will lose the state without a lopsided local victory in San Juan County, because of heavy Democratic activity elsewhere in the state. "Without a huge margin in this county . . . we can't win this election," he said.

One Republican official described the mood at the top of the campaign as apprehensive. " 'Grim' is too strong," the official said. "If we feel this way a week from now, that will be grim."

The Republican official said polling for Bush showed him in a weaker position than some published polls have indicated, both nationally and in battlegrounds. In many of the key states, the official said, Bush is below 50 percent, and he is ahead or behind within the margin of sampling error -- a statistical tie.

"There's just no place where they're polling outside the margin of error so they can say, 'We have this state,' " the official said. "And they know that an incumbent needs to be outside the margin of error."

GravatarHere in FL, it's heartening to see the Orlando Sentinel endorsing Kerry--
and the Tampa Trib refusing to endorse ANYBODY. These are both extremely righty rags. And it does appear to reflect the shifts we've all seen personally with conservatives who cannot bring themselves to vote for Bush. I'm actually afraid to get my hopes up for November 2, can't help it, the 2000 election still burns -- but
endorsement/non-endorsements like those are reassuring.

Oh, and whoever posted that link to Lawrence O'Donnell cleaning John
O'Neill's lying clock, THANK YOU. That's THE "L" word I've been waiting to hear this whole campaign. Not "liberal." Not "lesbian." Nope, the "L" word is LIE. (And Pat Buchanan at one point sounded like he thought lie/liar/etc. was one of the Seven Dirty Words You Can't Say On TeeVee.)

p.s. What time does the A-Man usually wake up? This thread is so seriously busted, I'm reading it in (eww) M$ Exploiter.

I can't read the story without downloading some Chinese characters, but that's a hoot.

GravatarThe Detroit News decided not to endorse either candidate which in effect is a victory for Kerry. They always endorse the republlican candidate.

Just when you thought reality could not be twisted further into a knot, Voila! The Amazing Karl Rove channels Riefenstahl and the handpicked crowd goes wild! Now, don't just blame the teeming ignorant masses - recall how the supposed "professional" "journalists" acted when they reported Bush's short 2 1/2 hour trip to Baghdad. I swear several of them were having orgasms on camera. I pray that this was all captured on video to be shown as a warning to future generations.

Time to shift command to Kerry

Excerpt:
The Chicago Sun-Times endorses Sen. John Kerry for president. This
represents a change in outlook for us. Four years ago, this newspaper
endorsed George W. Bush. We thought his administration would be about
trimming big government and spending a surplus projected at $4.5 trillion. We
liked Bush's vision for cutting taxes. And, most of all, we saw Bush
as a leader who could unite the nation.

[snip]
We also like how Kerry thinks --
his thirst for information, his ability to judge situations on their
merits. Yes, he sometimes changes his mind, but what the Republicans tar as
waffling strikes us as flexibility. We want leaders to stay the course only
when the course is a good one.

GravatarI think the cabalo-punditti buy into
a notion that ordinary Americans are
stupid, and will wear the labels they fit them with. What I've noticed about Kerry's campaign is they've said very little about the meta-process, whereas the Repubs natter about each group they're targetting before and while they are doing it.

This comment from a thread on Brad De Long' s blog perhaps shows what the consequences of this are.

Say one thing I love about salt-of-the-Earth Americans, they hate being taken for granted.

From a comment on a blog I read:

I had a very interesting experience tonight. Took my daughers to the Demolition Derby at the Arizona State Fair. A NASCAR Dad sort of activity, right? Going on in a Red State, right?

Well car 88 was marked Cheney/Bush on the side of it. It was roundly and soundly booed each time it made an appearance in the pre-derby show. And during the Derby, wonderful cries of cheer went up each time it took a hit.

I didn't hear any cheers for the thing. Solid boos. Very cool.

On the other hand, even though it lost the derby and had to be taken out with a forklift, I will give the driver credit, he put on one of the better shows.

GravatarThe Sun Times endosed Kerry?

Whoa.
pie

That's nothing. Shreveport Times endorsed Big John, too.

Hah!

GravatarAlan, that's how we may have to take out Bush/Cheney. With a forklift, if necessary.

GravatarOkay, who let the latin fossoris in?

Narro in a lingua nemo agnosco est incomptus.

Gravatar Perhaps the Gods at Eschaton are fair and just -- on second thought, no their not!

Or, perhaps, there are no Gods, and you delude yourself.

GravatarFor all you Austin readers(i've noticed there are quite a few here),
the Statesman just endorsed Bush.

It was a ridiculous endorsement too...criticized him in 2/3 of the editorial and then endorsed him anyway, saying they hoped he would be inclusive like he was as a governor, and they hoped he would admit his mistakes. As though there is ANY evidence that he would do that?

Anyway, Austinites are meeting at noon at the Congress AVe bridge to throw out their newspapers in protest.

For those of you who think all of Texas votes Republican, Austin is the state's bastion of Democratic voters and votes heavily Democratic so this is very unreflective of this community.

here's the link if you want to read it, but you have to register on their website.

GravatarShreveport Times endorsement of Kerry here

GravatarThat's nothing. Shreveport Times endorsed Big John, too.

Whoa.

(Novakula must be thrilled about the Sun-Times endorsement.)

GravatarWaPo endorsement - wha...?

NYT endorsement - worthless

"Chimpy McCokespoon" - Priceless!

(Slap that into a commerical and we've gots ourselves a landslide)

GravatarMemphis Commercial Appeal Goes For KERRY!!

After months of either bashing him, or running lots of pundit pap which bashed him, The Memphis Commercial Appeal has come out with an endorsement for OUR MAN! Go Figger.

The Memphis Commercial Appeal

(snip)
Editorial 10/24: For President: John F. Kerry
October 24, 2004

The 2004 presidential election campaign has uncovered an America as bitterly polarized as it has been since the 1960s.

The Commercial Appeal urges all eligible voters to exercise that right. And we believe that the best hope for uniting this country is with the election of new leadership Nov. 2.

We arrive at our endorsement of SEN. JOHN FORBES KERRY for president of the United States with reservations about both members of the Democratic ticket. Kerry has promised more than he surely can deliver on the domestic front, and Sen. John Edwards would be one of the 20th Century's least experienced vice presidents.

This recommendation comes because of deeper concerns about where George W. Bush will take this country over the next four years.
(end snip)

If you listen closely, you can HEAR the FReeprs rending their best Sunday clothes, and gnashing their teeth...

heh!

Tony B.

GravatarThanks Karin.

Gravatar... and Paris Hilton does, too!

GravatarOT: Remember the 3rd debate when Bush seemed to look off into the distance and then blurted 'Dred Scott'?

wire

GravatarHere's New Jersey, if anyone's interested
The Newark Star-Ledger for Kerry
They are NJ's biggest newspaper
The Asbury Park Press endorsed Bush-they suck.
The other major paper in North Jersey, the Bergen Record, also came out strong for Kerry
It requires registration, so here's a short excerpt:
If you hired someone to manage your affairs, but he spent all your savings and drove you deeply into debt, you would fire him. If he insulted some of your oldest friends and turned them against you, you would fire him. If he put your children in harm's way, risked their lives, and misled you about the reasons, you would fire him.

President George W. Bush has done all these things to the United States in his four years in office - and it's time to fire him.

John Kerry is the better choice for president. He promises a change in direction for the nation. He would still wage war on terrorism but engage in preemptive strikes only as a last resort. He would return respect for the United States abroad and focus more on the concerns of the middle class and the poor at home.

GravatarWell, the Columbus Wastepatch just came out for Chimpy.

So sad, so freakin' sad. I should have expected no less (since nothing minus nothing is nothing).

GravatarWaPo lives up to its reputation of being a piece of crap, with craptacular opinions, and craptacular reporting.

GravatarDown here in conservative SW Florida (our Congresswoman is none other than Katherine Harris), the Sarasota Herald-Tribune just endorsed John F. Kerry for President.

“The impact of a second Bush administration -- in areas such as foreign and fiscal policy and appointments to the Supreme Court -- could well be measured not in years but in decades. The nation can't afford that risk. John Kerry offers Americans a return to the mainstream of political life.”

But I’m sure this is just an anomaly and doesn’t represent a fading of Bush’s support here……tick, tick, tick.

GravatarOT, but completely worth reading: The Des Moines Time-Register's endorsement of Kerry:
http://tinyurl.com/4xoac

It is the nature of the man to listen and to respect others. He does not tend toward vindictiveness or in-your-face triumphalism. There is a dignity about him. We have watched him from early in the Iowa caucus campaign through a grueling general-election campaign in a battleground state. We have seen Kerry grow and develop in presidential qualities to the point we're confident in recommending him as a person of common sense and decency - a leader who has what it takes to bring Americans back together.

Gravataryou'll be labelled as dumb as a box of hair.

Ciao.

hey, don't go dissin Box of Hair, that was a great album

GravatarBarbarian,

RE:

"We currently have a criminal administration that cannot afford to lose for fear of facing a flurry of felony indictments."

Although I agree with you that many of them are crooks, and I would love to see tham pay the price for it, unless congress swings our way, which is unlikely in the Senate and next-to-impossible in the House, there will be no real possibility of bringing these swine to justice. If they do keep control of congress, though, they had better learn a lesson and play nice. If they act as some other posters upthread have suggested, and instantly go on the attack, then they will really be screwed.

When Shrubby first got "elected" in 2000, I comforted myself by saying "Well, the thing about these Republicans is that they overplay their hand and end up alienating the electorate. They could have contented themselves with a modest upwards transfer of wealth and a lavish "nation building" graft-and-corruption moneypit in Afghanistan. But nooOOoo -- they had to have a full-blown war in Iraq with all that oil as a prize. They had to start having extrajuducial detentions and torture. They had to have their tax cut run up a monster deficit too. Now their punk card is on the table.

My point is, if they act that way again, and try to start impeaching Kerry right off the bat, then they WILL lose both houses of congress, and then the heads really will roll. If Kerry is smart, he will make that blindingly clear to them, and offer them amnesty in exchange for cooperation. Except for Tom DeLay, that is. His head must be mounted on a spear on the White House lawn!

GravatarA friend of mine came up with this great idea for a poster (which, alas requires some cultural memory):

A reeeeal nice picture of Jodie Foster.

Underneath:

GO AHEAD. IMPRESS ME.

SHOOT THE CHIMP.

GravatarI noted with pleasure and some gloating satisfaction that, contrary to a few naysayers on this blog a week ago, the Chicago Sun-Times endorses Kerry.

http://www.suntimes.com/output/c...t- edits24x.html

GravatarFrom Pittsburgh Post Gazette, 'enthusiastic endorsement' of Kerry:

"The state in which this nation finds itself can be traced to a single misfortune: four years of the Bush administration."

GravatarOh, fuck all. Fine, Philalethes, have it your way. No humor or satire ever again. Here goes: "Fuck Bush and the wingnuts!" Now, isn't that powerful? Aren't you glad we don't use our brains and instead just fall back on the kind of knee-jerk invective the right wingers taught us to use? Fucking halfwit. You too, dave. And you, Anonymous, since you are clearly a troll and not at all the post-er I was referring to. Fuck all of you shiteaters--just keep jerking each other off and don't ever, EVER challenge each other.
You'll just excuse me if I kick you in the sack next time I see you. You clearly don't process other forms of communication.

GravatarWell I expected the WAPO and the NYT to endorse Kerry but I got a surprise (well not really) when the Austin American-Statesman endorsed Bush today. (go to Statesman.com to read) It is not that the paper endorsed Bush that got me, it was the reason why and the rationale given (or not given). Basically the premise was because we were at war, we should keep the guy we have despite his flaws. Then they ticked off each area that they 'expected' more of him. During the entire endorsement they neglected to mention why Bush was a better choice than Kerry. As such there was a huge protest here today in Austin....I felt the need to voice my opinion via a letter to the editor, but it was clear that there was outside pressure brought to bear on the Editorial Board - either that or a SEVERE lapse of judgment.
