I'MMA LET YOU FINISH

First!

OT: Cycling in solid-red Rappahannock County, Virginia, this weekend, Kerry signs outnumbered Bush signs by at least three to one, if not more. I was very surprised, and have no explanation.

The pollsters tell us that Virginia will go Bush, but if there are enough similar pockets in Ohio and Pennsylvania, I think we can safely say Kerry in a Landslide.

But I'm still very worried.

Now *that's* an October surprise!

GravatarNew poll shows Kerry up by 5 in Pennsylvania, and Hoeffel closing. See Buzzflash for details!

GravatarOutfreakin'standing. CNN just said that "hundreds" may show up!

And in a rare actual somewhat on topic blogwhore, the Gropinator is not going out of his way to stump for Chimpy McBackHump

GravatarHow can THE BOSS hope to stand against the powerful forces of Survivor and the soundtrack of "Top Gun?" We're doomed.
-

GravatarFinally! Moving to Columbus pays off!

GravatarI wish that Bruce was doing some more concerts, like ACT put together. Also, Eminem could be doing an independent, GOTV thing with Dre or P.Diddy in Milwaukee. Like to see that.

GravatarSmitty - You know, it is the tug of war between reality as I am experiencing it every day here in Dallas, and what the polls say that is driving me crazy. If I don't pay any attention to the polls or the bobble heads, it looks, smells, sounds and feels like a Kerry landslide. But the fucking talking heads constantly hyping the poll numbers keeps me up at night. There are times when I think they are deliberately trying to drive us all crazy.

Gravataryea baby...cleveland on election eve...this is ground zero.

Thanks, Bruce.

GravatarTime for Bruce to rewrite lyrics of Born in the USA- to the Iraq clusterfuck instead of Nam....

GravatarNot to bitch too much, but I would like to point out that I posted a link to the free air time for repubs on this site TWICE on Monday. Nobody even seemed to notice.

/rant

GravatarMaybe Bruce will draw "hundreds" of people...

Have A Nice, Hot Cup O' Joe!

GravatarHere's to the New Boss.
(Same as the Old boss?)

Gravatar"Is expected to perform one or two songs"?

It's not like he's just had a quadruple bypass..

GravatarAt those rallies, they're all coming to see Bruce, not that dull, wonkish, charisma-challenged John what's-his-name.

/s/

Howard Fineman

GravatarBruce could sing "Born to Run" for Kerry. If Johnny Thunders were still alive, he could sing "Born to Lose" for Dubya.

GravatarTena:

The tug-of-war with reality is nothing new, the Bush Administration has experienced it since 2000.

GravatarNo retreat, baby, NO SURRENDER!

Go Bruce!

GravatarThat's just desperate, isn't it?

I swear, that John Kerry will do and say anything to get elected.

(Not that there's anything wrong with that . . . )

GravatarTena, I believe that Kerry will win, probably pretty handily, but I do recall back in the day being utterly mystified by Ronald Reagan's electoral successes. I knew that I had never met anyone who had voted for him, and his named was reviled on every tongue. Yet he was reputedly extraordinarily popular and he won big, twice, and apparently not fraudulently.

Unfortunately, Americans travel in two big largely mutually exclusive circles, it appears. Down there in Texas I hear there a bunch of people who hang out in small town churches who otherwise don't get around much. But I wouldn't know for sure. In my own precinct, Nader beat Bush in 2000, and by a lot. Of course Gore got the most votes.

Still, no matter what happens in Texas, these polls are a crock. But nationwide, Kerry is pulling ahead even in the crock polls. So, as Wolfe Blitzer would say, "It looks good."

GravatarCampaigning for Kerry in Madison is about as out-of-the-box as campaigning for Bush in Midland.

GravatarRepubs going door to door in South Austin. They stopped by my place then hi-tailed it when they realized my wife was trying to convert them.

GravatarThakfully Bruce doesn't have acid reflux...

GravatarMy ticket to the Kerry rally later today here in Albuquerque says "Join Senator John Kerry and Surprise Musical Guests..." Makes me wonder.

GravatarThankfully Bruce doesn't have acid reflux...

GravatarCheck out Bruce's version of WAR! on the E-Street Band Live album. And crank it up!

GravatarHaloscan ate my (n)...Damn you haloscan {/closed fist shaking vigorously}.

GravatarSmitty - you really ARE #1 !!

GravatarPoor poor Ashlee...

GravatarI'd be perfectly happy if Kerry/Edwards won just barely (assuming no legal challenge by the R's) but I'd be fucking ECSTATIC if it was by a wide margin so all those smug broadcasters pandering to the wingnuts have to admit they did a piss-poor job of predicting this election.

I gleefully put a sticker on my rental car last night: Its a red W with a red line through it. Mine is the only car in the damn office parking lot without one of those blasted black stickers with the white W on it.

GravatarThakfully Bruce doesn't have acid reflux...

Hey, no retreat, baby, no surrender.

GravatarA patriot. Bruce Springsteen is a true patriot. Go Big John!

GravatarMy office building overlooks the Capitol Square in Madison where John and Bruce will be on Thursday. I'm stoked!!

GravatarBruse is fine
But Eminem's latest makes "Fahrenheit 9/11" look like a GOP campaign spot

GravatarThe polls in Arizona now show a 47% Bush - 43% Kerry margin. 1 in 4 AZ residents are independent, I got a really good feeling that Arizona will go blue next week.

GravatarSmitty, Good news about your trip through VA. We can turn VA blue. Please come help us this Saturday (I'm looking at you safely blue people in DC and MD! -- You don't have to live in VA to volunteer in VA.) Just two hours this Saturday can make a huge difference!

***********

Thank you for volunteering to boost Democratic votes
in Arlington through our Saturation Saturday outreach
October 30!

I am writing to ask when you will be able to work, and
to provide a few details.

With your help, we will be talking with thousands of
voters and passing out literature at high-priority
locations throughout Arlington. We will work in
particular to encourage voters from precincts that do
not have a traditionally high turnout rate.

--- Please let me what time you are able to work.
There are five two-hour shifts: 8 to 10 a.m., 10 to
noon, noon to 2 p.m., 2 to 4 p.m., and 4 to 6 p.m.

--- My preference is to assign you to a priority
location in Arlington of my choosing. However, if you
prefer, pick a location from the list at the bottom of
this message, or let me know if you would like to work
at a location that is not on the list. Work in pairs
if you’d like!

--- Literature packets available for pickup at the
Arlington County Democratic Committee 4620 Lee
Highway, Suite 214 (703) 528-8588 on Friday October 29
from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. or from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m., or on
Saturday October 30 from 9 a.m. to noon. Pickups
earlier in the week by arrangement.

--- Your efforts are very important! Four years ago,
the number of registered voters in Arlington who did
not vote numbered 34,256 – more than the margin of
victory in nine states. This Saturday, your job is to
find them!

Thanks,
Ed Fendley

No way - with Kerry in the wings, the lyrics about Khe Sahn have even more resonance.

OT, but on the topic of style - I am beside myself with joy (which makes for a mighty wide load) that Bush is pursuing the "ratshit crazy attack dog" strategery. It might play well to the hand-picked Undead, but contrast the visual effect - every time you see a speech soundbite, there he is - hunched over with that smirk on his face and "boo!boo!boo!" resounding in the auditorium - to that of a smiling, confident Kerry waving to crowds of happy supporters. Now imagine the effect on the undecideds.

LANDSLIDE, bee-otch!
-

GravatarI for one am praying for an inauguration eve concert headlined by Bruce and the E Street Band.

GravatarJust had email from an Phoenix AZ friend who says there's not a Bush-Cheney sign anywhere . . .

GravatarTena, I echo your sentiments.

GravatarWhat krsaz said about 2000. I know I've been living in an alternate reality since 2000. From election day on that year, I remember walking around in a fog, not able to believe or accept the fact that the Republican Party was trying to stop the vote count. Thank God there was someone special in my life at that time ~ I needed his shoulder and he needed mine. I'll never forget Inauguration Day 2001 ~ he and I sat there, watching in disbelief, crying our eyes out. We spent the next two years together bitching about Bush ~ I swear Bush, in an odd way, was the binding force in our intense relationship. Bush Co. broke my heart and trounced on my idealism. Bush has turned out to be way worse than I had anticipated, and I knew he would be a corrupt president. Anyway, I pray for a return to some kind of "normal," not Karen Hughes' "ten minutes from normal," but something much better.

GravatarI'll so be there in Madison Thursday!!

GravatarBorn to Run Baby, John Kerry, the Big Dog and Bruce.

Heard a pundit asswipe last night on Faux say that the only reason Clinton came to Kerry's rally was because he loves the spotlight and that he really didn't want Kerry to win. I could not believe it.

GravatarI made a trip out to Enchanted Rock last week, (TX Hill Country SW of Austin) and saw a fair number of Smirk/Snarl signs. However the Kerry/Edwards signs are all over the place in central Austin, so I still have hopes of Texas going blue, and the chimp only carrying Alabama and Wyoming

GravatarKee-Rist. I just learned that the title of the new Bush campaign ad about 'Faith' and featuring Sean Hannity will be titled "Voodoo"

I'm gonna have to change my handle. Shit.

GravatarThey have Toby Keith, we have Bruce.

We win.

GravatarThis doesn't really fit here, but is interesting anyway: www.georgewbush.com is no longer accessible from outside the US (we tried from Norway, Austria and the UK). What's Dubya got to hide?

GravatarI'll look for you Elizabeth!

GravatarKerry with Sherl Crow here in Vegas this morning. I'm heading over in about an hour. I hear Clinton is here this week also.

GravatarPossible way to repel the door-to-door Repubs: (true story) I have a friend whose dad got REALLY tired of the jehovah's witnesses and mormons and moonies coming to his door to proselytize. One day he saw them coming up the walk, stripped naked, and then answered the door. They never bothered him again.

GravatarAs a fan of both Stewart and Maher, I have notcied that I have seen neither as a guest of the other as far as I can recall. I find it unusual since they are both in the same business and not on head to head. Is there a feud or something going on?

GravatarHow soon before Clearchannel stations start rejecting his songs? If not already?
And why haven't the dixiechicks offered to join the campaign, or have they?

MYOB'
.

GravatarAAARRRGGGGGHHH!!!!

Thanks to my kids and Columbus' complete stupidity about Halloween, I'm not going to be able to see Kerry and Bruce.

Y'see, for reasons completely unfathomable to me, Columbus and its suburbs do not let the kids go trick or treating on Halloween. (That would make too much sense.) Instead, they designate another day "Beggars Night" and have the kids go out then.

Take a wild guess when Beggars Night is this year? And take a wild guess how my 4-year old answered when I asked her whether she'd rather go trick or treating or go see John Kerry.

Waaaaaaaaaaaaaahhh!

GravatarRight now, nothing is more important, Kerry supporters, than running scared. We must behave like we are 10 points behind and make a maximum effort, like the future of our children and grandchildren are at stake (it is!)

Forget the damn polls, the election is in the streets. Time for shoe leather, infantry!

CHARGE!

GravatarI think the way we should phrase this to the American people is:

"Ask yourselves America, who do you want to see perform at the inauguration, Bruce Springsteen, or yet another performance of that same fucking song from Lee Greenwood?"

I'm proud to be an an American, who cannot hear "I'm Proud to be an American" any more.

GravatarNice, happy, smiling pic of Kerry on the CNN.com main page this morning. The momentum is with us. LANDSLIDE!!!!!

GravatarVoodoo,

I can't wait to see Sean Hannity cry like the baby that he is on November 2, 2004! I don't advocate "hate" ~ but hate is a verb in my vocabulary reserved especially for liars like Hannity and John O'Neill. Hannity in an ad about faith is like Cheney in an ad for the environment ~ a complete joke.

And on Fox and Friends this morning, they were interviewing that pillar of integrity, Dick Morris, who reiterated that Clinton wants Kerry to lose so that Hillary can run in 2008, and that Hillary is doing a minimum amount of campaigning for Kerry, since she wants him to lose.

These people have no shame, I swear.

Gravatar2000 Election - Polls Showed Bush up on average of 5 points

Chimpy doesn't want all you Norwegiers messing up his weblogs. That way the FBI doesn't have to filter you out.

GravatarAnd why haven't the dixiechicks offered to join the campaign, or have they?

The Dixie Chicks have been touring with a GOTV tour for like four months, they were on RealTime a while back and they rock.

Sheryl Crow, Bruce v. Lee Greenwood and Toby Keith. No contest, Landslide, JFK.

GravatarI'm proud to be an an American, who cannot hear "I'm Proud to be an American" any more.
attaturk

Amen to that. Worst. song. ever.

GravatarMYOB,

I believe the Dixie Chicks were part of the GOTV tour earlier this summer.

GravatarDear Bruce and Big Tall John:

I was mistaken.

New Mexico is still a swing state, about to turn red at any instant.

Yeah, and Santa Fe is the center of the swing vote nexus here inthe Land of Enchantment.

You guys really really really need to come up here to Northern New Mexico and do a full rally and show. Bring Patti and Clarence and the rest of the band, and I'll stand you for burittos and margaritas.

Please hurry and come soon, I don't know what else will work on these hundreds of thusands undecided voters except a good strong dose of rock and roll.

yours truly,

Red

GravatarOn the yard signs in VA & TX posts from awhile back:

Here I sit in central TX with the ONLY Kerry sign in my whole neighborhood. I have learned that my sign is the subject of conversation in the neighborhood......hehehe.

Don't they know that just makes it better.

GravatarOn the yard signs in VA & TX posts from awhile back:

GravatarI saw some baffling yard sign numbers in Northwest Michigan last weekend as well ... and, yes, I realize that yard signs are the worst measure of electoral strength ... NW Michigan is solidly GOP, especially the area I was in, yet there were Kerry signs everywhere, even in places where Democrats have never dared to admit that's what they are. I was astounded. Still am ...

GravatarTena, Cervantes, et al.,

The difference with the Rappahannock case is that I would have expected that the people who live on the quiet little roads in pretty little country houses would be the people with whom I have nothing in common (going to their tiny little country churches). It was quite an eye-opener to see all those Kerry signs.

A few weekends back, I was riding in solid red Washington County, Md., and saw that the Kerry signs were about dead even with the Bush signs.

But then the polls say something different, and I start to worry.

GravatarOT
I just voted here in S. Fla by dropping my ballot in the mailbox---it brought tears to my eyes. That's never happened before. I can smell a K/E victory in the air, it trumps the odorous rethuglican decay.

GravatarTo combat the Boss' star power, the Republicans are pulling out all the stops.

Many zuuls will be roasted...

GravatarHow can THE BOSS hope to stand against the powerful forces of Survivor and the soundtrack of "Top Gun?" We're doomed.

Fielding Mellish

Shame he's not going to appear in New Jersey; Tom Waits' "Jersey Gitl" would bring down the house.
(Personally, I'm partial to Tom's version, but the Boss did OK...)

GravatarI'm not sure that Bruce is what's needed to bring out the vote the way it's needed in urban areas, but it's always been Lucky Town for him. Hopefully, that will rub off on Kerry.

GravatarPolls are appearing in the strangest places....

Vote at Nickjr.com

GravatarHave Madison rally-goers heard that they're considering moving the event to the corner of Broom and West Wash? The stage would be at the intersection so the hundreds of people attending could flood West Wash as it slopes up toward the Capitol Building. That would look really cool, actually. But Ryan (upthread) would lose his view, Sorry, man.

GravatarBruce was opening his 2003 Rising tour shows with WAR and asking his audiences to fulfill their duty as citizens and question their leaders (not that wittle Katie Couric or any of the others would have mentioned that in their breathless "news" reporting in the runup to this f'd up war).

DH and I (and his mother!) were in Philly for the first vote for change concert - electric.

I've never been so proud to be Bruce Tramp and a Democrat

"old man wanna be rich, rich man wanna be king and the king ain't satisfied till he rules everything"

Take us to the Promised Land Bruce and Big John.

GravatarOT, but kick-ass--another Catholic Republican for Kerry--the following was in the Times-Picayune in response to their cowardly non-endorsement:

"After rereading your gutless editorial, I am convinced that the real reason behind your "too many misgivings about both candidates to champion either one" is the editors' fear of alienating their fat-cat friends and advertisers by endorsing John Kerry, or admitting that a second Bush term would be the death knell of America...I am a white, Catholic, Republican, suburban woman who is voting for John Kerry."

What you say is true. I just tried it from Finland and got a 403 (Forbidden) page. Perhaps they are about to put up a new list of the Coalition and don't want anybody who actually knows to be able to see it.

ICC?

GravatarNader got 97,457 votes in Florida in 2000. Does anyone think that these people are going to make the same mistake again. Kerry wins Florida.

GravatarI'll help you spring for the bill for the burritos and margaritas NMRed.

GravatarWith consumer confidence falling again
in Oct,anyone think there might be a little PPT action going on, desperately trying to help the Chimpster, to bump the Dow above 10,000 before Nov 2?

GravatarKerry needs to have people stationed on the White House lawn the night of November 2nd, to stop Karl Rove's getaway helicopter from taking off.

Seriously.

Rove's probably cleaning out the bank accounts as we speak.

Amazon basin, maybe?

New Guinea, maybe?

GravatarClinton wants Kerry to lose

Tell that to the tens and tens of people in Philly yesterday.

HAH!

KERRY IN A LANDSLIDE!!

GravatarJoin Lee Greenwood, Toby Kieth, The Christian Fellowship Vocal Chorus and John Rhyes Davies this afternoon for a celbration gala event in support of our President, George W. Bush.*

* All attendies must submit to a body cavity search, sign a loyalty oath, not wear any clothing signifying support for or reference to any another candidate or party but that of the republican party and george w. bush and be willing to voice concern, consternation, laughter, admonition and praise when prompted. Any and all participants not willing to submit to these rules and regulations hereby relinquishes their rights and will be subject to arrest and summary incarceration. Bush/Cheney '04 and it's affiliates, the Southern Baptist Ministry, John Hagee Ministries, The 700 Club, the Ministries for God, the Assemblies for God, there members and their sponsors have paid for this event. Not recognizing God or His son by signing this loyalty oath may be grounds for dismissal and possible ex-communication.

Paid for by Bush/Cheney '04.

GravatarMYOB asks: And why haven't the Dixiechicks offered to join the campaign, or have they?

They have. I saw them do a great benefit show with James Taylor in Pittsburgh earlier this month for MOVE-ON.

GravatarBruce is an excellent choice for Cleveland. It was one of the first places outside of Jersey where he "broke out" in the 70s and he was loyal tofanbs there--playing small venues for year after he "made it big". He's an adopted son to many boomer Clevelanders and probably a great GOTV booster.

GravatarBill Clinton had a Monday before the election rally here in Cleveland in 96. Maybe it's a good luck charm for Democrats.
Just downloaded Eminem's "Mosh" and this fifty four year old weird Yuppie thinks it's fabulous. I have a new theme song-sorry, Bob Marley.

Gravatar"This doesn't really fit here, but is interesting anyway: www.georgewbush.com is no longer accessible from outside the US (we tried from Norway, Austria and the UK). What's Dubya got to hide?

truer than you think:
I've read the Brits are a little miffed by this blatant disregard for our allies.

Gravatarjack--is that satire? at this point, you can't tell with BC04

GravatarI have learned that my sign is the subject of conversation in the neighborhood......hehehe.

You're lucky, here in Northern Arizona all of the Kerry signs myterisously disappeared Friday Night. Including my neighbor's Veterans for Kerry. My neighbor went out in retaliation and got a huge Kerry/Edwards sign and posted it next to a picture of a shotgun in his front yard. I doubt they'll mess with it again. I have lost three separate KE signs.

GravatarIf the Repugs are blind-canvassing in South Austin, they must be pretty desperate indeed. If they were doing GOTV with their own registered voters, I could see that, but going to every door, talking with the hoi polloi? Damn.

We're not just going to go blue, we're gonna get DeLay outta Dodge, and that seemed like the impossible not so long ago.

GravatarRove's probably cleaning out the bank accounts as we speak.

Amazon basin, maybe?

New Guinea, maybe?

Nah, if the cannibals didn't get him, the headhunters would. I just don't think Karl can run that fast.

Gravatarnmred, i can't tell you how much i wish i lived in new mexico. one of these days i'm just going to move there.

GravatarJeebus, all this talk about bruuuce turns me off. He's just another phony, bloated icon who makes his living pretending to be just another "common man." In that respect, bruuuce has more in common with Bush than Kerry. Plus he can't sing for shit.

I'll take Joan Jett any day over bruuuce. I don't see bruuuce touring Iraq. Joan was out stumping for Kerry long before bruuuce ever got off his ass.

Gravatar"Join Lee Greenwood, Toby Kieth, The Christian Fellowship Vocal Chorus and John Rhyes Davies this afternoon for a celbration gala event in support of our President, George W. Bush.*"

I think alleged "comedian" Dennis Miller will be on hand to try out a few new impossible-to-follow jokes, too, heavily laden with obscure cultural references he looked up in Benet's Reader's Encyclopedia ten minutes before the show.

GravatarOT - Allawi's pissed!
Iraq's interim prime minister, Ayad Allawi, said today that "negligence" by US-led forces brought about the massacre of 49 Iraqi soldiers and warned of further "terrorist acts".

Oh, NICE! Just when you get one puppet installed, its wires get all tangled!

GravatarSatire. Yes. I couldn't help myself but it probably borders the truth in some ways. I'm sure of it. In looking over the "dead letter office" emails that georgewbush.org was getting practically every person was in some way connected to a religious organization, an evangelical drive or some church related thing. They are so desperate they are literally treating this as some religious/mission style of campaign. Politics, America and our country to them have NOTHING to do with it whatsoever except as the vehicle for which to pursue their dream of a theocratic state.

GravatarI wonder if Kerry will itch to pick up his Fender Precision Bass and join the Boss in a few rocking numbers? I know it would smack of Clinton and his sax, but, as a musician myself, I can't see how he could not at least WANT to...

Maybe at the inauguration ball? Or earlier, at the victory party.

Man, I'd love to be there for that!

Ed

Gravataryeah, eminem has redeemed himself with this song. I was not pleased with the last CD my son got (too many bitch and 'ho references for my taste). but, public enemy is still the best: fight the power

GravatarAs a native Clevelander, I can say that Bruce's legendary status has reached demi-god heights here in our hometown. Bruce loves the town, credits Cleveland for help in his career, too and has given the city more than its fair share of props.

Gravatarvery nice. satire is best when you're not quite sure...

Gravataroops I was the above anonymous

GravatarPossible way to repel the door-to-door Repubs: (true story) I have a friend whose dad got REALLY tired of the jehovah's witnesses and mormons and moonies coming to his door to proselytize. One day he saw them coming up the walk, stripped naked, and then answered the door. They never bothered him again.

Wait, wait. One morning he saw the JW, Mormons, and Moonies coming up the walk together? That's...surprising.

Slightly more seriously, the best I've ever seen was when I was on a small (4 people) Young Adults retreat in a cabin at Lake Tahoe with a priest from our parish, and the JW's came by just as our priest had finished saying Mass and he was still vested and had the altar kit out still. They did everything but turn and run.

GravatarThe new anti-bush eminem video (in homepage) is just incredible. Absolutely powerful stuff. A bit bordering on "mob rule" and "anarchy" but very powerful stuff.

GravatarBruce could sing "Born to Run" for Kerry. If Johnny Thunders were still alive, he could sing "Born to Lose" for Dubya.

If Eddie Wilson is alive, and he might be, he can sing "On the Dark Side" for Dubya Cheney.

/Obscure

GravatarThe election should be cancelled. We are at war. We need Bush's leadership and do not need this debate and wavering in front of the world. I have little concern for a few people's "rights" being trampled when Muslims are trying to kill us and we are killing babies and glorifying the gays. Look out liberals, you are outnumbered by the real Americans when away from your coastal redoubts. Please stay there and let us, the humbl,e productive, faithful, hardworking America get the job done while you whine. God bless Bush.

GravatarI just saw Public Enemy/Living Colour last week in Boston, what a great show!!

GravatarNO SURRENDER!

i train to be a poll watcher this weekend. no surrender baby, bring it on repug thugs!

GravatarWish Eminem had come out with his video two weeks ago so that the backlash against it not getting airplay would have assured it of a controversy (I'm assuming it won't get airplay, maybe underestimating the power of profits).

GravatarKarl,

Give it up, you lost when Starbucks
opened its first shop in Texas.

GravatarWASHINGTON, Oct. 25 - Bush said in an interview this past weekend that he disagreed with the Republican Party platform opposing civil unions of same-sex couples and that the matter should be left up to the states.

Mr. Bush has previously said that states should be permitted to allow same-sex unions, even though White House officials have said he would not have endorsed such unions as governor of Texas. But Mr. Bush has never before made a point of so publicly disagreeing with his party's official position on the issue.

I suggest we post this on all the rethuglican sites.

GravatarThe bush-turd is in the bowl and hugging the porcelain. Time to flush. That dried up witch Judy Woodsoft squinting furiously into the monitor and begging for that 3rd face lift is just one whore among too many. Our next campaign must be to show these corporate trolls the Exit sign. Are people prepared for a National Strike should the Texas Turd throw this thing?

Gravatarcharlie don't surf:

You're such a positive guy, if you don't like Bruce (and I know lots who don't) you at least have to appreciate that the man draws a crowd and has fan appeal. Anything that is good for Kerry and Victory should be encouraged. Except DEVO.

GravatarSpringsteen WILL bring votes to Kerry, at least in Cleveland. Out of the 12 republicans I have been working on in Ohio, 7 have now decided to vote Kerry and 2 bednarik (3 still undecided). apparently, the missing explosives were the last straw for 4 of them.

GravatarUsually when somebody says the Boss will do a song or two, it means he'll play for an hour.
And BTW, regardless of your politics, the Dems are getting a much better soundtrack this year. Compare the Boss, REM, Pearl Jam and Sonic Youth (who aren't part of any official Kerry event, but are on tour telling everyone to vote Kerry) to whatever junk Bush raked up, like Toby "Manicured Nashville" Keith or Charlie "Name one other song he's done" Daniels.

Gravataryour coastal redoubts

Ohhh, I like that -- my coastal redoubt. It sounds much nicer than plain old "East Coast."

GravatarBubba, that reminds me, I've been making sure that all my hardcore old-style republican coworkers know they have the option to vote for Bednarik. It seems to be working so far--I've convinced at least one. These are people who would slit their wrists before voting Democrat. Do people that this is an ok strategy?

GravatarSteve Simels,

You can't really dust for vomit.

GravatarThe election should be cancelled. We are at war.

...It's always best when we have men and women in the trenchs to take advantage of that moment to destroy the constitution they are fighting to preserve and protect. And it's best to show our enemies that that the light of democracy is easily snuffed by a single terror attack.

GravatarSuch a fine line between clever and stupid.

Gravatardevo was great

GravatarI don't know we we complain that the Right gets free commercials.

We get all the rock stars.

Except for Nugent, which really keeps us from getting a mandate.

GravatarI hope the rally is out in the streets. There will be a vast, never-ending OCEAN of humanity out there.

Talk about a "sense of inevitability" on election eve . . . . . .

GravatarExcept for Nugent, which really keeps us from getting a mandate.
Joe Briefcase

No, unfortunately we have Nugent the nutjob, right here in Michigan.

GravatarBig bottom, big bottom,
Talk about mud flaps,
My girl's got 'em...

GravatarNo, unfortunately we have Nugent the nutjob, right here in Michigan.

Anybody up for some naked co-ed crossbow hunting?

GravatarKrszaz, get a video camera and mount it inside the house.

Better yet, get floodlights, point them at the signs, and turn them on at night.

Even better yet, do BOTH.

GravatarDevo's touring for Kerry?

Gravatar"The election should be cancelled..."

Yeah, because the current CIC has done such a great job...

What this country and the presidency needs is some new blood, Bush has had 4 illegitimate years and he has done nothing of substance, except roll back all the progress we made under Clinton. The scary thought is that if they truly believe this end times stuff, we may have to forcibly evict him in January.

Gravatarwatertiger

...just can't leave her behind.

GravatarSouthpaw (much earlier upthread):

My fantasy is U2 playing "Beautiful Day"
live at one of Kerry's inaugural balls....
probably won't happen, but I can dream,
can't I.....

GravatarAt least Devo will be billed above the Puppet Show...

GravatarMust get a copy of the show!

GravatarTed Nugent deafened himself by playing outlandishly loud without the benefit of ear protection. Here in the eastern coastal redoubts, we call that blockheaded.

GravatarYou must whip it!

GravatarMy baby fits me like a flesh tuxedo...

GravatarMaybe Devo can "crack that whip" on Bush and Cheney.

I was never much of a Devo fan, fwiw.

GravatarI'm sitting here listening to my iPod, and "Everybody's Got Something to Hide (Except for Me and My Monkey)" is now playing.

Why has no one rewritten this for the Bush campaign?

Oh, and Bubba:

My baby fits me like a
flesh tuxedo
I want to sink her with my
pink torpedo,
Big bottom...

Possibly the funniest lyrics I've ever heard, because their resemblance to 80's hair bands (Warrant springs to mind with "Cherry Pie").

Gravatartalking heads constantly hyping the poll numbers keeps me up at night. There are times when I think they are deliberately trying to drive us all crazy.
Tena

Propaganda is hell.

But next year payback's gonna be a beotch.

Especially when the Kerry FCC carves up the defense industry owned network cartels.

Gravatar"Ted Nugent deafened himself by playing outlandishly loud without the benefit of ear protection. Here in the eastern coastal redoubts, we call that blockheaded."

What? Come again? Beg your pardon? Did you say something?

GravatarEliminate the ninnies and the twits.

Gravatar"Join Lee Greenwood, Toby Kieth, The Christian Fellowship Vocal Chorus and John Rhyes Davies this afternoon for a celbration gala event in support of our President, George W. Bush.*"

So Bush gets 1 ninth of the fellowship, figures it would be a money grubbing dwarf. Bad Gimli.

GravatarHey Karl (or is that Vladimir?),

This message comes to you from DEEP in the heartland--specifically, Wichita, Kansas. 'Coastal Redoubts' my ass.

Karl, you're a fascist. Way too much of a wuss to be an American; we CAN fight a war AND Kerry can win an election.

I think you'd be more comfortable in Putin's Russia. Why don't you leave?

Fucking Nazi asshole.

Gravatarlet us hope mr. springsteen stays away from small chartered aircraft until after the election.

not that i'm overly paranoid.

J.T.
Warlord of Silver Spring

GravatarTed Nugent deafened himself by playing outlandishly loud without the benefit of ear protection.

Makes you wonder how he can hunt ANYTHING. I mean, he can't hear himself crunching through the underbrush.

GravatarJayinABQ - I'll be down at the rally this afternoon, gotta leave in a couple of hours. Look for me. I'm the red head in a Kerry/Edwards tshirt. Should be easy to find me amongst the 'hundreds and hundreds' of New Mexicans who will turn out. Don't worry about the weather, it should clear enough by start time. Hell, over 10K went to the midnight "Breakfast with Bill" rally at the airport in '92. bringing their bundled up babies and wating until 3am for the Clinton plane to arrive, even as the snow started falling. If we don't meet today, in a week or two we should announce a time and place for Eschatonians to meet for burritos and margaritas.

Olaf: New Mexico wonderful place. Bring your own job.

Now, everybody repeat after me:

New Mexico needs a big old dose of Bruce and Kerry!

GravatarMakes you wonder how he can hunt ANYTHING. I mean, he can't hear himself crunching through the underbrush.

GravatarSo Bush gets 1 ninth of the fellowship, figures it would be a money grubbing dwarf. Bad Gimli.

LOL! Is Gimli allowed to campaign? I mean, is he a citizen?

And yeah, BCO4 was hoping for Saruman, but last time anybody saw him, he was sulking out in the forest, perilously close to where Ted Nugent was hunting.

GravatarI would like to say that not all Texans are for Bush. One of my happier moments came walking a friend's dog who lives a couple of doors down from 41 and having the dog take a dump on their yard. It should be known, apparently the neighbors all say Barbara is a raving bitch; and that 41 is a nice enough guy.

GravatarAtrios' thread below, "And It Continues," is now at the top of Recommended Diaries at Daily Kos.

I report, you decide.

GravatarBarbara is a raving bitch

To quote Jim Nabors: "Sur-PRISE, sur-PRISE, sur-PRISE!"

Gravatar"Campaigning for Kerry in Madison is about as out-of-the-box as campaigning for Bush in Midland."

Yes but Kerry campaigning in Madison will be the lead story at the local affiliates, which will reach ALL of south central Wisconsin.

GravatarLOL. Kudos to all above.

BTW, does anybody know definitively
who Spinal Tap was based on?
I've heard either Saxon or Uriah Heep,
but I don't know if the Tap guys
have ever spilled the beans....

GravatarIf Rove DOES try to flee the country, and is successful, I suggest that JFK dedicate a SEAL squad to hunting his ass down and returning him to this country in preparation for deportation to Den Haag for warcrimes.

Of course, should something happen during the hunt and capture, I won't object too much.

GravatarI'll look for you Red, who knows, maybe Steve Earle will be the surprise musical guest. The sun is already peeking through the clouds. Now if we can just get rid of Domenici...

GravatarI am quite certain that someone is trolling this board for email addresses and sending virus filled spam. Thought I would share the love.
Anonymous

It's called Bu$hCo paid trolling, and it's been going on as long as I can remember.

GravatarSmitty Werbenmanjensen -- I agree with Hecate. Keep the faith. We're going to win Virginia for Big John. On Saturday, I was told by county headquarters that we're within a point or two of winning Virginia. The Democrat candidate has not carried the states in many years. With the momentum Kerry has going, and the new money he's put into the state, we'll pull it out!

As far as signs go, in my area, signs are not an indicator of how popular Kerry is. We put out Kerry signs and they get stolen. I guess the Repugs think they can make us believe John Kerry has no support if there are no signs out for him. They are delusional.

GravatarSteve Simels,

I'd heard it was an admixture, and Led Zep was included. I was working as a writer in the industry at the time, and I can tell you, Bobbi Fleckman the publicist really does exist.

"You don't think a picture of a naked woman on all faw-uhs with a dawg colluh around her neck, and a hand sticking a glove in her face is offensive?"

Gravatarsteve,
Nah, but I'd love to know. The Folksmen, from Mighty Wind, apparently opened for Tap once and were booed offstage. No one recognized them. (The things you learn when you're geeky enough to listen to the director's commentary on your DVD...)

Gravatar"You should've seen the cover they wanted to do..."

GravatarAnd why haven't the dixiechicks offered to join the campaign, or have they?

The set they did with James Taylor at the final Vote For Change concert would bring tears to the driest eyes.

Friend of mine who's a big fan was wishing they'd rewritten their lyrics to "Goodbye Earl" to fit W.

I liked Springsteen in a lukewarm sorta way (except for "Pink Cadillac," one of my favorite songs). Didn't LOVE him until seeing the VFC concert. Now it's crystal-clear why they call him The Boss.

GravatarIf Rove DOES try to flee the country, and is successful, I suggest that JFK dedicate a SEAL squad to hunting his ass down and returning him to this country in preparation for deportation to Den Haag for warcrimes.

I am with you up to "returning him to this country in preparation". But after that, it needs to be "for his trial for criminal violation of the federal War Crimes statute".

The Hague is for situations where countries are unwilling or unable to police their own.

Kerry needs to show that we are neither. Yes, we should still joing the ICC, but we need to also demonstrate that are committed to and capable of fulfilling our obligations to prosecute warcrimes within our national jurisdiction.

Gravatarattaturk - You know, wrt: John Rhys Davies - this is silly, but I read that during the filming of the Fellowship, the fellowship members all got matching tattoos that I think I read were the elvish for Fellowship. John Rhys Davies refused to go along.

Might know.

GravatarSecurity Mom in MA,

I picture U2 at Fenway headlining the Red Sox victory celebration, but if they want to come back to help Bruce throw a party for JFK in January that's fine with me.

Gravatareast have to appreciate that the man draws a crowd and has fan appeal. Anything that is good for Kerry and Victory should be encouraged. Except DEVO.
krsaz

Oh, fuckin' A!
Fucking red plastic Jell-O molds on their heads, and they expected to be taken seriously. GMAFB. Made the B 52s sound like Mozart.

GravatarTed Nugent deafened himself by playing outlandishly loud without the benefit of ear protection.

Makes you wonder how he can hunt ANYTHING. I mean, he can't hear himself crunching through the underbrush.

The 'Nuge hunting with bows & arrows is a crock.

Really, it's his profound manly bodily funk that does the trick. One whiff of 'Nuge can knock over a bull moose at 50 paces.

Gravatarbruce should sing "youngstown" from the 'ghost of tom joad album' and then let kerry join him for "this land is your land".
where is dylan? (other than writing his memoirs)

Gravatar"new mexico wonderful place. bring your own job."-nmred

yeah. that's the thing.

GravatarBruce might have been born in the USA but he no longer has the right to live here, with his traitor activities during wartime. Let's send him to france.

.

GravatarNow, now folks. I'm sure this is generational. Devo's a little silly, but they're fine. Now if Ashlee SImpson wanted to stump for K/E--her, we should turn down. No cred.

GravatarK/E yard signs are disappearing around Fresno and Oakhurst with frightening regularity. I've seen one neighbor's go up and down four times now.

The only way they can win is to cheat. Frustrate them.

GravatarFrom The Chicago Tribune's conservative writer, Steve Chapman, on why he's voting for a Democratic Presidential nominee for the first time:

"Kerry, it's true, is worse than Bush on some issues. But he can probably pass a test that Bush has failed, namely, avoiding catastrophe."

Hey, it's not the greatest endorsement, but I'll take it. Hopefully some like-minded folks in neighboring Wisconsin pick up the Trib . . . . .

http://www.chicagotribune.com/ ne...0407oct24.story

GravatarSteve,

But then again, there was such a wealth of asses to poke fun of that Christopher Guest might not be able to point to any one band.

He always wanted to make "A Mighty Wind" because his first band was a folk band.

And don't get me started on Corky St. Clair.

GravatarDylan is such a flake, he's probably for Nader. Bruce, of course, should close with "Born in the USA" or do it as an encore. Wish I could be there.

If he brought a long Southside Johnny & the Asbury Jukes (who used to be his warm-up act and also honorary Clevelanders), it would be perfect.

Turning out the vote in Cleveland is essential for Kerry in Ohio. This is the base for progressive dems in the state, as well as the largest metro. Columbus is more DLC/southern Dem country and Toledo & Dayton tend to be a shade more conservative (and are much smaller).

GravatarSeriously, though (and I know this is pointless as I'm going to lose you all to troll-baiting any second) I like the new Eminem video, but I'm deeply uncomfortable with him on our side of the line. I find the man really concerning.

GravatarOne whiff of 'Nuge can knock over a bull moose at 50 paces.

LOL! Kind of like Saddam Hussein's "grenade fishing" trips?

GravatarHey Rocket,

I live in South Austin. I can only hope that the rethugs come door to door in my neighborhood. They'll
be tucking tail and getting the hell out faster than you can say "hard work". South Austin hates
butsh.

Meanwhile, I love the Boss. What a
great heart that man has.

Gravatarwatertiger,
That whole rep company needs a name (and not "Those People Who Are Always in Those Christopher Guest Movies"). I've done community theater in a small town, and Waiting for Guffman is eerie. I especially like the not-quite-out town councilman. I assume Best in Show and Mighty Wind are similarly accurate.

Gravatar I like the new Eminem video, but I'm deeply uncomfortable with him on our side of the line. I find the man really concerning.
NYMary

I for one, welcome our new thug overlords.

GravatarMassive Madison turnout

Nader a shadow of former self

High African-American in Milwaukee due to Gwen Moore congressional race

Feingold with great GOTV

Gravatari didn't see mighty wind, but best in show was hilarious.

Gravatarsadly OT, but John Peel has died. on the bbc now.

GravatarNYMary,

I agree. Maybe "Guest Stars"?

I watch the Westminster Kennel Club dog show every year, and Guest & Co. nail it on the head. Even the announcer in the background at the event is the same guy.

Fred Willard steals that movie.

GravatarSeriously, though (and I know this is pointless as I'm going to lose you all to troll-baiting any second) I like the new Eminem video, but I'm deeply uncomfortable with him on our side of the line. I find the man really concerning.

Why?

GravatarOlaf,
Definitely see Mighty Wind. It's surprisingly smart and moving. Guest always gives the moral center of his films to Eugene Levy, who's brilliant here, a complete freak who's only really comfortable, or even human, when he's singing. The look on his face when Catherine O'Hara is singing in the concert is the closest thing to a genuine human emotion film can portray.

(and I always mean to tell you, love your handle)

GravatarOlaf,

"Mighty Wind" is a little sadder than the others, but Ed Begley's turn as a Scandavian-born, Yiddish-spewing public television producer is hysterical.

Okay, back to the topic at hand...

GravatarNYMary: I agree. I do not like Eminem (I do not like him, Sam I Am...). His views on gays and women are abysmal.

On the other hand, I am thrilled to be on the same side as Green Day and the Beastie Boys.

I would be very cautious about embracing Eminem. My read on him is, this is a guy who is on whatever side will get him the most publicity, generate the most controversy.

Kinda like Howard Stern, really.

They aren't on "our side." They're on their side. As soon as "our side" becomes inconvenient for them, for whatever reason, they'll turn "us" like rabid badgers.

One gal's opinion.

GravatarI saw Bruce in Phili, opening concert for Vote for Change. It was a spiritual experience. I am converted, I have found the truth. And it is Bruce.

Gravatarcmdicely,
Primarily his history of virulent homophobia, but there are other things, too. My kid had an Eminem phase a couple of years ago; I was really glad when it was over.

Gravatar>

Here's a little anecdote about Hannity.

I heard Hannity say on radio during the Abu Ghraib days, 'The Democrats have politicized this thing from Day One.'

Well, I can't say Hannity politicized things from Day One. I do know he politicized things from Day Ten, though.

Day Ten would be the day Bush addressed the nation, Thurs. 9/20. I was at my local bar, where my fellow regulars love to watch the Faux channel.

This speech, if you recall, was spoken to a nation never so united, never so supportive of its commander-in-chief.

And THE SECOND AFTER BUSH WAS DONE SPEAKING, and they threw it back to the newsroom, Hannity says, approximately,

'Let's see the Democrats climb out from behind this one.'

I'm going from memory, so it might've been 'liberals,' not 'Democrats.' And it might've been 'crawl out from underneath this one,' or something. But the sentiment was at that level.

What a fine American he is.

GravatarSorry, but Hollywood types like Bruce Springsteen do not represent real Americans.

GravatarWatertiger:
I too was around as a writer and
believe me, I knew Bobbi Fleckman.
Seriously -- she was a publicist at
Columbia Records in NYC named Susan
Blonde. Had a voice and accent that
could bleach muslin at thirty paces...

GravatarSteve,

ARGH! Karen SomethingorOther at A&M Records!

Man, my memory is shot, but she was not only horrid to listen to, but a holy terror. My roommate from college worked for her.

This is going to bug me until I remember her last name. Damn.

GravatarWatertiger:
Damn...I think I remember her but not
her last name....

GravatarI like the new Eminem video, but I'm deeply uncomfortable with him on our side of the line. I find the man really concerning.

Consider Churchill on the Russians:

His response as to whether his avowed stance to help the Russians, once attacked by the Nazis, contradicted his ardent anti-Communist bent: "Not at all. I have only one purpose, the destruction of Hitler, and my life is much simplified thereby. If Hitler invaded Hell I would make at least a favourable reference to the Devil in the House of Commons."

GravatarHis views on gays and women are abysmal.

Which views would those be, where are they evidenced, and how are they difference from the views he evidences in the same fora for people who are not women and/or not gay?

I would be very cautious about embracing Eminem. My read on him is, this is a guy who is on whatever side will get him the most publicity, generate the most controversy.

I see a lot less evidence for that in Eminem than, say, Michael Moore. (And, yes, I am quite glad to have Michael Moore on 'our' side as opposed to, say, Nader's, where he was in 2000).

They aren't on "our side." They're on their side. As soon as "our side" becomes inconvenient for them, for whatever reason, they'll turn "us" like rabid badgers.

Heck, most of "us" probably aren't on "our side". We all have our own interests, which happen to largely overlap in ways which are critical in this election, and in many -- though not all -- ways which are reflected in the split between the two major parties. But where we don't share interests, we part ways, disagree, squabble, and if it came down to it, we'd probably throw material support to opposing sides.

But we agree on the need for change, and the broad direction of that change, and even the short-term specific means of achieving it -- at least, as far as next weeks election.

Our side isn't a monolithic cult, and we shouldn't try to make it one.

The other side is, and the fact that they've worked so hard to make it one is one reason they are likely to lose.

Gravatarhas Mickey Kaus whined about his already?

GravatarNO RETREAT NO SURRENDER!
Remember Florida
Vote early and vote often.
Send the lying physcho back to Crawford.

GravatarBest line from "A Mighty Wind":
I'm so glad they made the model trains, otherwise they never would have come up with the idea for the big trains"

Gravatarcmd,
I have never suggested that we are or should be 'a monolithic cult." I would very much like to believe that Eminem is a man of principle with a genuine message to share regarding the debacle of the Bush presidency. I don't know song titles, but I can see him popping up in a gay wedding, with a big fat bearded guy in a dress and veil--if you're a fan, I assume you know the song I mean. I'm concerned about that persona, that's all.

I hope he is honest in his opposition to the president, and that his voice will help young voters along. The song and the video are both a powerful indictment, it seems to me.

GravatarPudentilla, point taken.

GravatarTed Nugent deafened himself by playing outlandishly loud without the benefit of ear protection.

No wait, it is better than that. He knew his amps were so loud that he could suffer hearing loss. So, he used protection in the ear that faced his stack of Marshallls. Now he is deaf in the other ear, the one he did not use protection in.

Gravatarmore cleveland culture for yas...

DEVO is a local band, they were from the Akron area and have a loyal following of spuds here in Cleveland, their springboard to success. Devo's rise here in the rock and roll capitol mirrored that of Chrissy Hynde, another local, who as locals have it, can occasionally walk on water.

Way to go Ohio

Gravatardamn! the woman from the kerry campaign at my training hinted there would be "surprise guests" (which tends to sound like an old episode of the mike douglas show or something) and i thought to myself "bruce?"

and then it was just patti labelle and the regular horde of candidates and of course clinton.

but no bruce. i've liked his music, but seeing him play the VFC show in cleveland made me understand why his fans are so damn fanatical. and now other swing states get bruce.

not that the rally wasn't fun and all. but having only had four hours' sleep, bruce really woulda gotten me pumped. as it was they just played "no surrender" and "celebration" by kool & the gang. which is more the soundtrack to an aggressive bar mitzvah.

Gravataroops, I was the above anonymous

GravatarMy, my, my. I truly believe these are historic times. I remember Watergate and reading three newspapers a day and rushing home to hear the latest on the network news (before cable for you younguns). I have the same feelings about the national mood as I did then.

There is a groundswell throughout the entire country and I would not be surprised if Florida and Ohio are the only two states voting red this time.

Stiff upper lip all - only a few more days to go.

GravatarFucking red plastic Jell-O molds on their heads,

one of my wife's cousins plays minor league hockey. his girlfriend is having a baby. his sisters are throwing a shower.

the invitation features a picture of a frolicking, diaper-clad baby with an unsightly black splotch where the head should be.

took me five full minutes to figure out it was supposed to be a CCM helmet.

GravatarWOO-HOO!!
I work in Madison about 4 blocks from where this rally will be. My union (AFSCME) called me saying they have VIP tix available, so I snagged some. Hot damn.

Not sure how "VIP" tix differ from the ones they email you to print out...

Gravatarwww.johnkerry.com/madison

...says that the Foo Fighters will be at the Madison rally on Thursday, not Bruce. ???

Anyone know for sure?

GravatarI'm from New Jersey and I think Chrissie
Hynde walks on water, too.

Best. Female. Rockstar. Ever.

GravatarMcStubbins:

VIP tickets get you up front by the stage. Got an extra?

Gravatarsteve simels

and Chrissy is so beyond self appointed celebrity status. I ran into her at the rock hall (go figure) and asked her what she thought about some of the exhibits. damn if she didnt treat me like a human and ask me what my favorites were.

Gravatarwhich is more the soundtrack to an aggressive bar mitzvah

muffy, you owe me a laptop. Diet Coke spewed all over this one....

GravatarSheik:
I'm not surprised.

My favorite Chrissie
story:

During the Pretenders first American
tour she was at some industry shmooze
fest and the Warner Bros. rep introduces
her to original MTV deejay Mark Goodman,
(the big goofy one with the curly hair).

Chrissie extends her hand and says
"How ya doing man?"
Pause.
"It is man, isn't it?"

Sorry, I think I tapped out my AFSCME limit on tix. Holy cow it's going to be a MOB! They have most of West Washington blocked off, it will make for some great pictures, just a huge river of people snaking down from the capitol.

GravatarI'm so glad they made the model trains, otherwise they never would have come up with the idea for the big trains"

Jennifer Coolidge. The Eighth Wonder of the World.

GravatarI would very much like to believe that Eminem is a man of principle with a genuine message to share regarding the debacle of the Bush presidency.

He's been taking shots aimed at Bush foreign policy since 2002 ("Square Dance", on the The Eminem Show).

So if its just stirring controversy, its not just exploiting the current moment, but something longer.

I don't know song titles, but I can see him popping up in a gay wedding, with a big fat bearded guy in a dress and veil--if you're a fan, I assume you know the song I mean.

"Song" and "video" are different things; I'm much more of a music listener than watcher. And I'm not a particular Eminem "fan" -- I've listened to quite a bit largely thanks to having a teenage brother-in-law who is -- and about a year ago was even moreso -- more into that scene than I am. My musical tastes are eclectic enough that I don't have the time to be a particular "fan" of any one artist -- or genre even.

While I think I do remember than video scene, I'm not sure what point you are trying to make with it. As I recall, the tone of that whole video is decidedly non-serious.

I'm concerned about that persona, that's all.

Oh, certainly, the popularly perceived Eminem persona is something I would be concerned about; as much as I can tell, though, the worrisome parts are as much a product of people looking for things to complain about out of context as they are of anything real.

GravatarAndrew Sullivan just endorsed John Kerry for Prez.

Works for me.

Gravatarcmd,
Points taken on all counts. Certainly he has credibility with younger voters (I teach college, and my students love him, mostly). Here's a timing question, though. Has the song (and video--though I recognize the validity of the distinction, I think they're often taken together) come out early nough to have a meaningful impact? I assume the timing here is intentional.

GravatarOkay...first off, the next person who makes a pejorative remark about DEVO gets their shit ALL fucked up personally by me.

The Akron born and bred wonderband did NOT make the B52's sound like Mozart. They made the Beach Boys sound like DEVO. I just saw the spud boys last month at the Riveria Theatre in Chicago and they were fantastic. Try to reach beyond "Whip it" for a change and you'll see a worldview and musicality that transcends any and all bands of that era. Go to: www.clubdevo.com if you choose to enlighten yourselves further.

As for Springsteen, he made his mark in Cleveland via the infamous WMMS. A fellow named Kid Leo was the program director and had Bruce in heavy rotation long before he broke with the Wild, the Innocent and the E Street Shuffle. Bruce never forgot the favor and has been coming back here ever since then with a very unique brand of gratitude.

WMMS, which now completely blows, was also highly influential in a similar regard for the careers of Roxy Music, Robert Fripp, Bowie, Iggy, Mott the Hoople and most importantly, the Sensational Alex Harvey band. Here endth the lesson.

And shut the fuck up about Devo you drooling mutants...and I quote,

Low at the ends,
high in the middle
O-HI-O
God made man
But he used a monkey to do it
Ape's in the plan
We're all here to prove it
I can walk like an ape
Talk like an ape
Do like a monkey can do
God made man
But a monkey supplied the glue.
Are we not men,
We are DEVO...repeat.

GravatarNew Green Day Video, American Idiot

GravatarAgreed. A non-Ohioan here who loves Devo. I first saw them as a kid on Saturday Night Live doing "Uncontrollable Urge." I had never heard them before but knew instantly that I had to get their album. Yes, forget 'Whip It' and get their first album. Kick ass rock n' roll. No 2 ways about it.

Gravatar...sniff...John Peel died in Peru...sniff...Damn!...sniff...First Rodney, now John...Now I'm angry AND sad...

"To the lumberyard!"

GravatarCleveland Bob,
A friend of mine saw then in NYC this summer and said they were looking a little chubby for their jumpsuits. Was that your experience?

GravatarHas the song (and video--though I recognize the validity of the distinction, I think they're often taken together) come out early nough to have a meaningful impact?

If I were timing it, it would have been a couple weeks sooner. But, then again, I think its target audience is very much "up to the minute" where it comes to music, so I think it'll be as effective as it would be any time coming out now.

I don't think it'll have a huge impact, but I think it will help motivate some people to get to the polls from a group that historically just doesn't turnout because they see the effects of political decisions as distant.

GravatarDEVO is awesome. If you don't like them, you're just not a new traditionalist.

What other band uses the whole tone scale, like on Are We Not Men? What other band uses 9/4 time, like on Blockhead? They were awesome performance artists, writers and musicians.

GravatarDEVO CHANGED MY LIFE!!!!!

When I first heard Devo as a young man I knew there were other dorks out there like me.

Devo was my bridge to the punk scene which in turn lead to my political awakening.

Wip It is a GREAT song. Amazing that you got to hear songs like that on the radio 20 years ago.

GravatarUnfortunately, Americans travel in two big largely mutually exclusive circles, it appears.

YES! I've been thinking about this. Someone said there's at most six degrees of separation between any two people, but going from someone on the left to someone on the right is either impossible or adds 6 or 7 degrees of separation.

Gravatarsteve simels,

Did you used to write for Stereo Review? If so, your write-up convinced me to buy the first Pretenders LP. Been a fan ever since.

Thanks!

GravatarNYMary,

Ummmmmmm. Chubby. yes. Rockin'? Hell, YES!

Go to the website and read the whole account of the Chicago show. WOW. WOW.

GravatarFeralLiberal:
Yup, I'm the old guy from Stereo Review
(which I still write for, only now
its called Sound & Vision).

GravatarCB,
Well, sure. To be fair, "rocking but chubby" was more or less my buddy's analysis.

GravatarI'm an old fart. I've defended my lack of knowledge about rap and hip-hop with the argument that if I get into the groove with the bad ass gangsters of rap I'm denying the young'uns the chance to rebel against my generation by co-opting their music. Nodbody really wants their parents in the mosh pit. Enimen is definitely not on my iPod.

But I downloaded the video last night, and think it's a damn fine piece of work.

Note at the end of the video the army of Moshers forms a barricade of their own to protect people who are standing in line to vote while he sings about putting aside differences to do what has to be done, as the camera goes down the line and you see people of various shapes and sizes and as old geezers like me walk into the building to vote.

Yes, I would have liked to see this video out before registration closed in many states, but this should motivate those who are already registered out to the polls.

I checked with my 23 old goddaughter last night, she thought it was very powerful, and said just about everyone in her college dorm had downloaded the video and it was playing all over the dorm building.

This is not a message directed to old farts, it's directed to our kids and grandkids.

I'm cool with that.

GravatarCleveland Bob:
Good call on the Alex Harvey Band.
For my money, they wrote the greatest
lyric in rock history --

"I wish I was a forrest ranger.
Danger. Danger. Danger. Danger."

GravatarSorry, but Hollywood types like Bruce Springsteen do not represent real Americans.
g dub | Email | Homepage | 10.26.04 - 1:19 pm | #

Aarrgh.. Please tell me what you consider a *real* American. Does it mean that you can not be wealthy now by the sweat of your own brow? That you had to have been born with wealth? Or just that you had to have grown up with a rich Daddy with lots of rich and generous friends who cleaned the shit off your shoes everytime you stumbled into it? I'd love to know. 'Cause the only help Bruce's Daddy ever gave him was a swift kick in the azz - thankfully for his fans that translated into a lot of great, great songs that helped us reconcile our own less than Ozzie and Harriett (are they *real* Americans?) upbringings.

GravatarCMD:
Don't think I said anything about "monolithic cults." Very annoying to have assumptions made about what I said or what I mean.

Michael Moore, as far as I know, has always been on the side of the PEOPLE, the dispossessed. Don't know where you're going with that comparison, but it doesn't hold.

Eminem seems like a nasty guy to me. Carries guns, beats his wife, makes nasty remarks about gays and guys he assumes are gay (ever hear him slam Moby? WTF did Moby ever do to deserve that shit?)...

That's all. Nothing cult-like or monolothic about it.

Now, if Eminem shows signs of maturing into someone who is less of an asshole, fine. I'll be glad and say "cool" and "welcome."

Otherwise, I'd watch my back around him, is all.

GravatarI'm thinking of making a mix CD of political songs. Any recommendations?

GravatarNYMary:
"The Walls Came Down" by the Call,
"Wasteland of the Free" by Iris
DeMent,and "If I Had a Rocket Launcher"
by Bruce Cockburn
spring immediately to mind.

Lots of Clash songs, of course. And
Jackson Browne's "Lives in the Balance"
if that's not too wimpy for you.

And I would avoid the Cure's "Killing
an Arab" if at all possible.

GravatarYa gotta get Dylan's "Masters of War" in there. Amazing how that song fits today's times.

GravatarOK, I'm also thinking "Holy War" by Matthew Sweet, "Tramp the Dirt Down by Elvis Costello, "Nothing At All," by 20/20, "Mayday," by Shoes, "President Kill" by XTC... stuff in my range, ya know.

GravatarNYMary:
Tramp the Dirt Down is effing amazing.
And I'm thinking I'm forgetting a
Dead Kennedys song....

Actually, its funny that you're doing
this. I just go my first CD burner (for
my birthday, and as soon as I figured
out how to make a compilation (last
Sunday) I put together a collection
of vaguely political or protest songs.

XTC's Peter Pumpkinhead would actually
work, now that I think of it...

GravatarEminem seems like a nasty guy to me. Carries guns, beats his wife, makes nasty remarks about gays and guys he assumes are gay (ever hear him slam Moby? WTF did Moby ever do to deserve that shit?)...

The Eminem v. Moby feud began with a broadside launched by Moby against Eminem and his lyrics and describing Eminem's listeners as "impressionable 10-year-old boys" at the 2001 Grammy Awards; the response by Eminem in "Without Me" was, frankly, by the standards of the personal back-and-forth that gets played out in rap songs in general, or, heck, even in that very song, not all that severe.

The next stage was Eminem taking a joke set up by MTV at the 2002 VMAs with Triumph the Insult Comic Dog -- a puppet apparently that Eminem wasn't familiar with and thought was a Moby thing -- very badly.

GravatarFreedom Choice by DEVO

A victim of collision on the open sea
Nobody ever said that life was free
Sank, swam, go down with the ship
But use your freedom of choice

I’ll say it again in the land of the free
Use your freedom of choice
Your freedom of choice

In ancient rome there was a poem
About a dog who found two bones
He picked at one
He licked the other
He went in circles
He dropped dead

Freedom of choice
Is what you got
Freedom of choice!

Then if you got it you don’t want it
Seems to be the rule of thumb
Don’t be tricked by what you see
You got two ways to go

I’ll say it again in the land of the free
Use your freedom of choice
Freedom of choice

Freedom of choice
Is what you got
Freedom of choice!

In ancient rome
There was a poem
About a dog
Who found two bones
He picked at one
He licked the other
He went in circles
He dropped dead

Freedom of choice
Is what you got
Freedom from choice
Is what you want

GravatarEminem seems like a nasty guy to me. Carries guns, beats his wife, makes nasty remarks about gays and guys he assumes are gay

He is a reflection of his (our) culture.

Remember he is expressing views held widely by many white American young males.

This is not condoning his behavior however understand that we need to find a way to appeal to the ignorant and not dismiss people because they are ignorant.

I'll gladly take a homophobic Eminem any day over a Limbaugh listening church goer.

Our side has a better chance of winning the "Eminems" on our side that trying to win over the religious.

GravatarSo Eminem calls Moby a fag because Moby (probably fairly correctly) pegged Eminem's audience as immature?

Nice.

I'd like to see a Venn diagram of Rush's audience and Eminem's audience. Wonder what the crossover would be...

GravatarNYMary -

Please don't forget "Democracy" by Leonard Cohen on his album, "The Future."

When I heard it being played at one of Clinton's inaugural balls, I wept for joy.

In the final days I've been playing that song at least once a day, cranked up loud.

"Sail On, Sail On,
O Mighty Ship of State
To the Shores of Need
Past the Reefs of Greed
Through the Squalls of Hate..."

Gravatarwow, clinton AND bruce?! ok, that clinches it, i'm predicting a landslide victory for kerry!

GravatarCan't go wrong with Rage Against the Machine...

Not a big Eminem fan, but he's good with the rhythms and rhymes, and I respect him for that. Kid needs a therapist, tho...

GravatarAlso, "Boom" by System of a Down.

GravatarDang, we get Jon Bon Jovi in Cedar Rapids. Oh well, I'm going to see Big John anyway, not listen to the music.

GravatarI'm thinking of making a mix CD of political songs. Any recommendations?

Just about everything that the great Phil Ochs ever recorded.

GravatarSteve Simels-

Enjoyed your writing, Thanks. You really turned me on to a lot of great music!

Tonio K. is still one of my favorites, particularly "Life in the Foodchain".

GravatarNYMary,
"Youth Against Fascism" - Sonic Youth
"Shipbuilding" - Elvis Costello OR
Robert Wyatt
"Volunteers" - Jefferson Airplane
"Bonzo Goes To Bitburg" - Ramones
"Shot By Both Sides" - Magazine
The Clash. Phil Ochs. The Mekons.
ClevelandBob,
Saw an absolutely STUNNING Rocket
From The Tombs show in Boston last
year - night of the blizzard!
Cleveland Rocks!

GravatarWhat's Bush got?

Chicken Hawk Charlie Daniels?

Ted "I Love to Kill Animals" Nugent?

Gene "All Women are Whores" Simmons?

Jessica "Is it tuna or chicken" Simpson?

TWITney "Canada is an overseas country" Spears?
OR

Stephen "I'm the least talented member of my family" Baldwin?

GravatarI'm no Eminem fan, either (don't like rap or hip hop), but he's onto something with this recent anti-Bush composition.

GravatarDang, we get Jon Bon Jovi in Cedar Rapids.

Better Jon Bon Jovi than fucking Ted Nugent!

How about Buffalo Springfield's "For What It's Worth."

That song is as relevant now as it was back in the 1960s, I think!
