I see in your eyes the same fear that would take the heart of me. A day may come when the courage of men fails, when we forsake our friends and break all bonds of fellowship, but it is not this day. An hour of wolves and shattered shields, when the age of men comes crashing down, but IS NOT THIS DAY. This day WE FIGHT! By all that you hold dear on this good Earth, I bid you STAND MEN OF THE WEST!

Never posted song lyrics before, but
somehow this seemed appropriate.
Here comes the helicopter -- second time today
Everybody scatters and hopes it goes away
How many kids they've murdered only God can say
If I had a rocket launcher...I'd make somebody pay
I don't believe in guarded borders and I don't believe in hate
I don't believe in generals or their stinking torture states
And when I talk with the survivors of things too sickening to relate
If I had a rocket launcher...I would retaliate
On the Rio Lacantun, one hundred thousand wait
To fall down from starvation -- or some less humane fate
Cry for guatemala, with a corpse in every gate
If I had a rocket launcher...I would not hesitate
I want to raise every voice -- at least I've got to try
Every time I think about it water rises to my eyes.
Situation desperate, echoes of the victims cry
If I had a rocket launcher...Some son of a bitch would die

OT, but I live in Cleveland and changed my address from my college one back to my hometown a few weeks ago...I just got a postcard in the mail from ACT saying my voter registration has an error that may prevent me from voting and it gave the number to Cuyahoga's election board. So I call and say ACT sent me a postcard only to have the woman tell me they are crazy and she doesn't know what they are doing...I ask her to check just in case, it seems I put the year I was born in as 2004. The woman even managed to sound incredulous when she asked if I hadn't received the postcard they sent. No ma'am, actually I did not. Bottom line, thank you crazies from ACT.

Hey Vicki:
Re Rocket Launcher....
Once, after an excruciatingly painful
breakup, I decided I was going to make
a solo album about disgusting girlfriends --
all cover versions. I was gonna call
it "More Songs About Anger and
Embittered Self Pity." I forget a lot
of the songs I picked (although I
distinctly remember choosing Material
Issue's "What If I Killed Your Boyfriend")
and I happen to come across the title
of the Cockburn song, which I had not
at that point actually heard.
Imagine my disappointment when I found
out it was a political protest song.

Looks to me like there's going to be an avalanche of dirty tricks in a lame attempt to discourage voters or throw the election.
Yesterday our neighborhood was solicited by faux Democrats asking for cash for Kerry. I called the local Dem office...they said canvassing teams _never_ ask for cash. The spoofers didn't get any from me, even after the hard sell.
Meanwhile the hypocrites as going deep down 'n dirty on the negative advertising. A certain rethug named Mike Slattery running for NY assembly has so far sent out four mailings paid for by the NY GOP organization that are simply defamation.

Ya know, I've been wondering something. I wonder how many average Americans have ever actually visited MoveOn.org. I mean folks who aren't the political wonks we are. I was talking to my mother the other day and she mentioned the "Hitler ads" MoveOn "sponsored". I told her the real deal about that whole affair. Now, she may disagree with her redheaded son's political leanings, but she knows her oldest wouldn't lie to her. She honestly did not know anything about the site, much less the issue.
The smears work, though, and remember: if liberals fight back, it hurts people like Adam Nagourney's feelings.

Steve,
I'd love to hear that cd! That's a great idea! There are songs, seared into my heart, that, when I hear them, immediately bring up intense memories from the past. All inspired by former boyfriends. It's funny how something that happened twenty years ago can be replayed so vividly in my mind in the here and now through music.
Well, here's hoping most of my former boyfriends are doing well. I hope they're all voting for Kerry, but I'm not immune, I dated a few assholes in my day, and I'm pretty sure that at least a couple will vote for Bush.
Just for the record, I'm never dating a Republican again, or at least not until the party gets is shit together and proves to me, through acts, not words, that it has abandoned the causes of wing nuts, neocons, and fundies.

Funny you should mention that. For whatever reason, my ex-fiance has been on my mind lately. I haven't heard from her in a long time - I told her to quit calling me after she'd gotten married and was on her second kid - but she was an old-school Republican, like her parents. She wasn't particularly religious and didn't carry any of the "I hate different people" vibe a lot of the GOPranos carry - which makes sense, as she was the child of Chinese-Japanese immigrants and has a gay brother - but she was all for the strong defense/fiscal responsibilty/get government off our backs stuff. In short, we did not see eye-to-eye when it came to politics, especially since I was MUCH more radical back then.
She supported Bush in 2000, though she prefered McCain. I do wonder what the dear girl thinks these days...but between you and me, I ain't gonna call her up to find out.

I saw some clips of the Chimp/Laura interview with the Good Morning America guy (I don't watch the morning shows, don't know his name). Honestly, he reminds me of my dad who is almost 80 and not senile, but definitely not in tune with all around him. That kind of wild eyed looking around, real big eyes like he's really really trying to concentrate, looking over at Laura for reassurance, her just kind of patting him. Really, it's terrifying.

Bruce Cockburn is a bit more than vaguely spiritual, Steve. He's what I would call an extremely dedicated Christian - he actually believes in all that "peace on earth" stuff, and has done a lot of political work in South America and Canada to fight the oppressive dictatorships that the U.S. government always seems to find so appealing. Don't know about the Jackson Browne comparison, though - Bruce started out as a stone folkie and has evolved over the years into an excellent guitarist - his electric guitar work on Stealing Fire is magnificent. Much more left than Jackson, and less navel-gazingly narcissistic.

I must confess...my last boyfriend is a political junkie. We broke up a couple of years ago. Long distance ~ he lives on the west coast. I was at a party last weekend. steve simels,
Unfortunately, the ex-fiance didn't care for my fondness for expanding my conscience through nature's own bounty. Couldn't smoke at her place - where we stayed when we were together - and if I lit up at my pad, I'd get the same look I got when I told her I was going out on the road with a band for three days. Needless to say, it wasn't a look that said, "Okay, darling one, do enjoy yourself." As for the second part of your ex's good points, well...that took awhile, but she finally came around. Put it this way: her husband, when I met him, said "Thanks".
Vicki,

If you wanna say those things then have the balls to stand up and say 'em. Don't hide behind the NRCC attacks and then come out with the hypocritical statement about Murphy's campaign being negative.
So you're trying to tie her to Enron and Hezbollah? What a joke you are and how desperate you've become.

Was not ready for that. I told them I saw the ad in Pittsburgh which freaked out the campaign headquarters (I could hear "are we running an ad in the Pittsburgh market?" in the background.

Story breaking at dailykos.com--
In Wisconsin, President Bush spoke at a high school today. I called the school first to verify this before posting this...
but evidently students were told that if they wore Kerry shirts, buttons, etc, they would be sent home or suspended. After parent(s) complained, the principal provided an "alternate" activity of watching a movie and the students were not allowed to see the President's speech.
This is in a public high school, paid for by our tax dollars, I might add.

The PRC and ROC have this mutual reconquest thing. The ROC is actually armed well enough by the US to keep them away (keeping in mind the PRC's inability to deploy a blue water navy, other means of keeping the PRC from trying anything, etc). The ROC imprisoned a general at one point for getting drunk and saying, look, we're not fucking conquering the PRC, that's crazy. But you play "Survivor" with the insipid crazy landlords who brought about Mao with their greed and that's the kind of thinking you get, a Pacific Miami. Not that Beijing is that much better.

Speaking of Taiwan - and us telling a fellow democracy to go fuck itself so we can stay in good with a repressive communist country - has the U.S. ever really recognized Taiwan's independence from China?
Taiwan has never declared independence from China. Both the People's Republic of China ("China") and the Republic of China ("Taiwan") still each, IIRC, purport to be the government of China, and that they believe the little tiff will be settled peacefully one day and they can go back to being one big happy country.
In the case of the ROC, this is mostly because if they declared independence, the chance of the PRC invading or attacking would go way up -- in fact, crises have been caused by rumors that ROC leaders might be considering do something that would appear to be begin to shade toward hinting at independence.
What really bugs a lot of people in the ROC about US policy is that the US used to recognize the ROC as the one legitimate government of China -- they even had the seat on the Security Council -- but switched and recognized the PRC instead as the One China.
Of course, at the same time, the US has made all kinds of commitments to protect the ROC, so its not at all a consistent, logical, or rational policy. Its all a matter of expedience.
