Hopefully this will be heard and processed by people who aren't necessarily in Kerry's camp already. It's fine passing notes among your friends; it's better to get the word out to those who are, for some reason, undecided.

I live in the Bay Area, and there's a Fox team of morning guys who were trying to spin their way out of the 380 tons of explosives today. It was fun to watch them squirm. "These explosives might have been gone before the 101st got there, right?" The guy they had on was sticking to the facts and shooting down all their arguments. My favorite line was, "To say that these explosives or weapons or whatever are in the hands of the insurgents is just speculation, isn't it? We don't know who has them..." Oh, man, I love to hear people lose on their own show.

Clinton can't be "head" of the UN. The President of the US doesn't have the authority to appoint the Secretary General. Clinton can, however, be UN ambassador. How about Clark as Secretary of Defense?
Clark is prohibited by law from being Secretary of Defense until he has been out of uniformed service for 10 years.
He'd make a great Secretary of State. I doubt Clinton will take a cabinet position -- I can more see Kerry using him an occasional "special envoy" as Clinton did with Carter, or a more regular special envoy for, say, Middle East peace.
He might also make a good UN Secretary-General. Sure, its not a Presidential appointment, but the US has some sway, and while pushing a US candidate would be unusual, Clinton personally has a lot of international regard and might go over well.

How many times must this be explained? Clark CANNOT BE Secretary of Defense. The National Security Act of 1947 prohibits the selection of a Sec of Defense who has served in the military within the last ten years, unless the President requests a waiver from Congress. Unless Kerry has some huge cojone coattails, that probably won't happen.

With all due respect to Senator Levin, who is well regarded in Michigan, we need him in the Senate.
I don't know who would run to replace him, but I have this sneaking suspicion that the ambitious Bill Hardiman, a State Senator from Kentwood (Grand Rapids area), would try on the opposing side. I do not like Hardiman, it's probably my own prejudice in that he was big time into piously promoting these "family values" programs when he was Mayor of Kentwood, all the while being very friendly with a woman I know who is a psychopathic liar. I'm not saying he did anything unscrupulous, I'm just saying that anyone who is friendly with this particular woman has bad judgment. He's too conservative. Oh well, doesn't really matter for the purpose of this blog.

I don't think I could trust McCain at DOD. It's too political, too heavily-funded. I'd prefer someone with more actual command experience.
But I do think McCain could be great as Secretary of VA. That's not exactly a loaded weapon we'd be handing him, and he has a direct personal interest in seeing that agency run properly. It's not (usually) a heavily politicized position, and the department could benefit greatly from having a popular, well-known advocate like McCain, who can speak with some knowledge about those issues. Also, it could go a long way to mend the venomous, divisive atmosphere that Caligula has created.
It would have the added benefit of loosening up a senate seat for a special election, which we could possibly win. And that is probably why he'd never accept.

They are terrified that every success they've had moving their traditional conservative issues into the mainstream is going to go down to the inky bottom along with these criminals they backed.
Some, such as Robertson, are already yanking at those knots trying to disconnect themselves from the sinking ship, and others will follow, but most of the regular suckers who got conned are hopelessly strapped to W and his anchor.

It matters if Clark can be Sec of Defense if he doesn't qualify under the law. This isn't a "rule;" it's a LAW. Clark cannot be Sec of Defence, as per the National Security Act of 1947. Section Two, I believe. One person has been secretary of Defense outside the limit, but that had to be approved by Congress (I think it was an Eisenhower appointment). Like it or not, we do believe in upholding laws here, don't we? And if we don't like the laws we work to CHANGE them, rather than violating them. That's what grown-ups do.
Just because we WANT something doesn't mean we can have it.

I'm not 100% sure about this, but I don't think my/our hero, Bill Clinton, is eligible for the Supreme Court, since he was disbarred due to the Monica fiasco.
There's no requirement for a Supreme Court to be a lawyer. It would be tough to confirm him, though...

The eligibility requirements for the Supreme Court are:
1) Be appointed by the President,
2) Be confirmed by the Senate.
Anything else is merely a desirable qualification, not an eligibility requirement.

Clark is qualified. If he would accept the position, I say give it to him. The GOPranos don't care about breaking the rules to betray democracy. Why should we care about changing the rules to do something right?
Its not a matter of caring. The Congress -- including the almost-certain-to-remain-Republican-majority House of Representatives would have to agree.
Its not going to happen in the real world.
I'm sure we can find someone competent to be SecDef who wasn't in uniformed service in the last decade.

The Lies May be Worse Than the Crime:
Just as Bush and Cheney are pushing the line that "it's possible the high explosives at al Qaqaa went missing before US troops secured the site," the Iraqi government is saying it ISSUED CERITIFED STATEMENTS that nothing was disturbed at the site prior to US control of Iraq, and that the US PROVISIONAL AUTHORITY WAS AWARE OF THESE STATEMENTS."
Please God, somebody fry Bush/Cheney for pushing a line about these explosives that they know is false. Hello, mainstream media?

"Here's the deal - what's been missing from the entire Kerry campaign is just how tough a motherfucker John Kerry really, actually is, and it's got jackshit to do with hunting geese and killing the Vietcong. Kerry is a superhero, the kind of valiant son of a bitch who doesn't give a rat's ass about his own life in order to make the lives of others better. It's his post-Vietnam life that makes him a superhero. You don't know how much a superhero the man in the cape is by his origins. You know a superhero by his deeds. And if Kerry loses, it'll be because his campaign refused to acknowledge just how kick-ass Kerry has been since his final purple heart (and if Kerry loses, adviser Bob Shrum, who, in essence, said the public was too stupid to understand Kerry's accomplishments, should be strung up by his balls and batted around like a pinata by the Democratic party leadership until he bursts open and showers everyone with his innards).
I don't think Clinton should be anything other than a popular ex-president and occasional special envoy, really... it's best for him, & for the party, to be above the fray as much as possible. We don't need any Republicans at Treasury, State, or Defense, because they've been coasting for far too long on their perceived (and incorrect) advantage in these areas & we don't need to support that. McCain at the VA would be great, but I agree that he won't give up his Senate seat... and we can't lose any of our Senators to the Kerry administration either. Gore's not a lawyer, which means that while he theoretically could be on the Supreme Court & would probably even do a good job, it'd be really hard to get him confirmed. Actually, IMO Hillary Clinton would be great on the SC, but as I said above, we can't afford to risk a Senate seat.
I really don't have a place for Clark at this point... I'm not inclined to for us to have military types in charge at State, because I think it makes other nations even more wary of us, regardless of party affiliation or moderate leanings.

Clinton can't be "head" of the UN. The President of the US doesn't have the authority to appoint the Secretary General.
Brooklyn Girl:
While you are correct that the U.S. President does not have the power to appoint the U.N. Secretary General, that doesn't mean that Clinton is not a prime candidate for U.N. Secretary General. He is. I don't have a link handy, but google it - there's a lot of noise about him throwing his hat in the ring, and he would garner enormous international support.

They hate the Constitution and everything it is meant to protect. They like war, and arrogance. They are loathed througout the world. If they left here, they would be forever adrift on the seas, unwelcome everywhere they tried to infest with their stupidity. There's no country on the planet that would take them in.
And so, there is only one place left for them to go:

I just heard something interesting from a co-worker who has government connections regarding Secretary of Defense. Co-worker says that Kerry will select Senator Carl Levin. I said, "No! We need him in the senate!" However, Levin is respected.
Co-worker then says speculation is that Governor Granholm appoints herself to Levin's Senate Seat. That wouldn't surprise me; Granholm is very ambitious ~ a mover and a shaker.
John Cherry would then be our governor, and that's good. Environmentally, that would be great for Michigan.
Also, co-worker's source says internals look very good for Kerry (we know that, though).
I don't think we should be so hard on McCain. I believe that his ultimate goal (if not to be president) is to bring the republican party back to the moderate state it was in before the neocons and religious right got control. To do that, he has to have the respect of the moderates in the party, and refusing to stand with a republican president would not be useful.
I have read that Richard Lugar might be someone Kerry would want in a government position. He has spoken out a good bit this year.

Oregonian 10/26/04
Robert Landauer:
It's a matter of our doing things right
Item: Many Americans question whether it was necessary to invade Iraq. Yet they honor all the military men and women who honorably answer the nation's call to duty. They especially appreciate the sacrifice of 7,500-plus Americans wounded and grieve that more than 1,100 have died.
The president customarily sends a note of condolence to the families of military personnel who die pursuing or defending the nation's interests. It's an appropriate signal that our highest elected official recognizes that the life of every person ordered into harm's way, no matter how humble his or her origins, is precious to the nation as well as to immediate family.
So I was shocked, saddened and angered when I read my co-worker Steve Duin's Oct. 16 column regarding the death of Army Spc. Joseph Blickenstaff of Corvallis in a Stryker combat vehicle accident. The president "sent the Blickenstaff family a form letter with a stamped signature," Duin reported
Indeed, the certificate has a reproduced signature. That's not compassionate. It's impersonal, cold and shabby.
I'm torn by this: I wouldn't be surprised if, in years to come, we found out that McCain was actually playing for both sides. I don't know why I think that, but it just intrigues me.

After reading Fred R. Brown's letter, as a long-time Democrat supporting Bush, I felt I should probably respond, as a "converted conservative," supporting John Kerry.
Fred uses the "changing horses in the middle of the river" arguement to say that times are just too dangerous to change leadership from Bush right now.
Nonsense. Fred's horse is drowning the USA in mismanagement at home and abroad and we must cut our losses with George Bush right now.
Just recently in the news, we see that there really were some weapons in Iraq, at a place called Al Qaqaa. There were 760,000 pounds of RDX and HMX high explosives at this well-known facility, all of which went missing while the Bush priorities were chasing non-existent WMD's and securing the oil pipeline. The Bush administration knew about these weapons, before the war, but did not find it a priority to secure these very real weapons.
Let's make this clear... the bomb that took down Pan Am Flight 103 over Scotland used less than one pound of these explosives.
Thanks to this latest mistake in Iraq, there are now 380 tons of these deadly explosives on the loose in Iraq and elsewhere. These explosives are being used now against our own soldiers in Iraq, and doubtless we'll see more evidence of them in the future, maybe even right here in the USA. I have to ask, "How could letting John Kerry lead, a man that at least saw combat, possibly be any more dangerous than the incompetence we've already seen from this
administration?"
As a fiscal conservative at heart, I see that George Bush has taken us from a huge surplus and a pay-as-you-go method of fiscal responsibility to record debt and deficit, both! and I see no sign that the spending is going to end. Maybe if we had a growing economy we could pull ourselves out of this spending river and survive the drowning horse in Iraq. The only Bush plan for the economy the last four years was a tax cut, which hasn't done a thing for the economy, and that's the Bush plan for the next 4 years. More oats to a dead horse it looks like to me.
Nope, I've seen enough, it's time for a couple new horses. These two have darn near lost us the ranch.

Today,I heard Bush say that he was "a President for all Americans including Democrats." And he was "happy to have Zell Miller, a life long Democrat at his side." I would think even Republicans view Zell as a deranged Benedict Arnold. Who has any respect for this guy anymore?
Bush et al is getting desperate...the media is shifting rapidly toward support for Kerry. Now, if only someone from the CIA would leak the results of their 911 investigation that the WH has been sitting on since June.

Exactly. Spitzer has probably been the best AG for NY, like, ever.

Broward County, Fla
Local 10 has learned that many as many as 58,000 ballots that were supposed to mailed out on Oct. 7 and 8 could be missing.
The Broward County Supervisor of Elections office is saying only that the situation is "unusual," and they are looking into it.
Is anyone else having trouble getting their absentee ballots? This may be going on all over the country. Please speak up. If you have requested an absentee ballot and have not received it call your county clerk and ask what has happened and how you can vote. In certain areas you can sign a “cancellation of ballot" affidavit at the polls.
If anyone tries to stop you from voting or you see anyone being stopped from voting call

"We've also discovered through intelligence that Iraq has a growing fleet of manned and unmanned aerial vehicles that could be used to disperse chemical and biological weapons across broad areas. We're concerned that Iraq is exploring ways of using these UAVs for missions targeting the United States." - G.W. Bush, Oct 7, 2002

Dream Cabinent
Some original - some stolen from up thread:
Wes Clark - ambassador to Iraq- hate to do that to him, but who else has the combination of smarts and cajones to fix that mess? (In my more vindictive moods, I thought of giving the job to Feith)
Gore- either interior or energy. In energy he could direct the transition from fossil fuels to H2
Big Dog - Amb to UN for now. Doubt he would be up to Sec state short term.
Gary Hart - homeland defense
Bob Graham - CIA
Atty Gen - Granholm
Surgeon Gen'l - Dean
Sec Defense - Bob Kerrey - former SEAL, medal of honor winner, knows what war is really about
Why does Gen. Clark hate America?

Clinton cannot be the UN Sec Gen. The wingnutz started that rumor to fire up their Clinton-hating base.
General Clark can be Sec. of Def...the Senate committee would need to recommend a waiver. It has been done before in the cases of Marshall and Forestall. Approval for appointments is given only by the Senate not the House of Rep.
Holbrooke recently said he is more interested in the position of NSA. It must be nice to pick and chose. Huh?
The European leadership according to an open letter that appeared over the weekend, want Clark as SoS. They really trust him, but also site that the Arab/Moslem world also trust him because he was willing to go to the mat to save 1.5 million moslem lives.
I hope we all caution the Dems about putting any repubs in high ranking positions. Because Cohen was a republican--and a detriment to Clinton while he served as Sec. of Def., we had no one in a "former" position to speak out on behalf for our side. In fact, Cohen basically towed the bush lies when given the opportunity by Dobbs and Wolffie Bliltzer. No Hegel--no Lugar.
I'm not sure Clark is interested, and I spoke with him last Friday. Time will tell.
Wes Clark is the only person who busted their butt with no thought of "wanting" anything other than getting bush out. That's all.
Wes Clark is a truly great and amazing American. We are lucky.

Ditto. Clark has got to be just about the best thing that has happened to the Democratic Party in a long, long time. (The other is Howard Dean,IMHO) I love Kerry, but I'd take a bullet for Clark. And I think he'd take one for Kerry.
Less than 2 months ago, the so-called experts at the DNC were counseling Kerry to stick to the bread-and-butter domestic issues, and to more or less concede the National Security stuff and Iraq to Bush. Thank God Clark (and others) stepped in and slapped the stupid out of them.
We said it was going to be about NS and Iraq, and we were right. How could it be otherwise?
I think Clark would be awesome at whatever he put his mind to--but he'd be wasted as Governor of Arkansas. (I believe that was proposed to him several years ago)
At the Campaign Office last week, I met a group of Scottish televsion crew doing a story on the election. They ALL knew Clark; said that everybody in Europe does (unlike Kerry and Edwards) and respects him tremendously. We need him where he can be of the best use to us--restoring our reputation in the world.

Wes said "no" to a run for governor in 2002. On the US side of the pond, few Americans have an appreciation for the scope of the position of SACEUR, one of the most powerful in the world and considered a "head of state."
There is a reason so many top generals end up at state or in the WH...they are leaders. In this case, the General is also brilliant.
While America was being feed a steady diet of Monica's blue dress, the Europeans was watching daily briefings by Wes. They know him much better than his fellow citizens.
I would like to see him at Defense. We need someone who knows everything about that place and will be able to repair the damage. We need someone who loves the troops and their families. We need someone who is a top strategist and knows what Pentagon bs sounds like.
Very selfish on my part to be sure. Clark spent his entire life working hours that would kill a lesser person. He did it all for an average pay of $50,000 a year.
Maybe we should let him go and enjoy his remaining years; but I am so very worried about this war and know that there is no Dem crony that could ever do the job they way it needs to be done. In fact there maybe very few people on the planet that can get us out of this mess. Maybe only one. He's the one.

To me the most revealing part of the Bush quote was the phrase "your Commander in Chief". The Constitution makes the President Commander in Chief of the armed forces. He is not "our" Commander in Chief.

I was about to open up a new blog on my site and write almost verbatim what Gen. Clark wrote. I would have loved to have seen him be the nominee, but as Secretary of State for 4 (8?) years, he'll be primed and ready to go to be the President after Kerry's term(s).
I've been a supporter of Clark since before he was running, and even donated money to the cause. As the Chinese saying goes, "With time and patience, the mulberry leaf becomes a silk gown." Translated to less flowery typical English, "Good things come to he who waits."
