An excellent question, but I have the feeling that it's less about monetary or tangible compensation for drudge, and more about ideological whoring. Not to mention sending the signal to future leaders that they can do whatever they want and then just get pardoned afterwards for 'the good of the country'. After the election, we have to put lots of pressure to resist any pardons or other such mess until people start to pay for what they've done.

We think it was LGF we were passing by recently that did a piece on media liberality (along with furvent wishes for Arafat's death). The produced evidence that numerous television-based talking heads who enthusiastically cheered for the Rape of Iraq and helped to cover up every sscrew-up of Bush's are technically registered Democrats. Now, to a Rethug like Jeff Sessions or the people harping on Kerry's "excommunication", an obedience-driven mindless follower, that registration is all you need because how could someone possibly vote or not demonstrate corruption on behalf of anyone but their pledged Lord? It's just like the expectation on the part of the GOP cult that Catholics are like them in cultish subservience to the Pope. But it is far from true and, in keeping with the laughably useless nature of the rightist blogs, it is yet another old lie that was refuted years ago. It was Bernie Goldberg's, his one thing approximating evidence that the media is liberal, and it was demolished with (1) their actual conduct, (2) tghe fact that their bosses (editors and owners) are not only overwhelming not Democrats but overwhelmingly only too happy to miss conceptions, etc.. It's just like these attacks on Chomsky and Kerry that were actually refuted twenty years ago and more: just keep repeating and somebody out there won't know this is actually very old.

We get Democracy Now at 4pm. I just heard a report by Greg Palast that made my blood run cold and hot and cold again, about the forthcoming 'pickpocketing' of the election by gumming up the polls, phony registration tactics, and other sickening gimmicks designed to prevent as many as 2-3 MILLION people's votes from being cast, or if cast, then keep them from being counted.
Palast finished by saying "if you live in florida, Ohio, Colorado, or New Mexico, you can't trust the election results."
Since I DO live in New Mexico, and becasue I have been working to GOTV for MoveOn, it just about made me physically ill. I am not used to contemplating the possibility that my ballot would not be counted, or that I might be prevented from voting. It is disconcerting. It makes me quite angry to contemplate it, especially as I went to my war in the (unfortunately misled) belief that I and my comrades were also 'preserving your liberties' with our lives. Truly, this is starting to piss me off...

It appears the explosives disappeared AFTER we invaded, despite the rightwing lies, sometime in April 2003.
In July 2003, Valerie Plame, who tracked WMD, was outed and her entire network of contacts exposed. Do you suppose hundreds of tons of conventional explosive would be something she and others in her field might want to keep an eye on? WMD doesn't just mean nuclear. If there were people trying to track this shit, would Bush have some reason to disrupt that?

Here's the deal about the tape:
- ABC claims they bought the tape from a "contact" with "Al Qaeda links" in Pakistan for $500. In the past, all Al Qaeda tapes were given to Al Jazira for free through surrogates and contorted methods not to be traced.
- Although the tape was acquired in Pakistan, the fellow on the tape speaks American English, and a fake "Arabic accent" comes in and out for no apparent reason. In the past, no Al Qaeda tape was sent in English, all of them were in Arabic. His comments seem forced and stereotypical, and he bizarrely refers to the Bill Maher show at a point during his rant (apparently Al Qaeda gets HBO in their cave).
- The CIA people say the tape has "the traces of an Al Qaeda tape," yet they won't openly claim or verify it is so.
In my opinion, this tape is as legit as a three dollar bill. Rove should have used a better actor.

That finger thing--who among us has not flipped off another? But if it resonates, that means that a lot of people take it to heart--they look at it and say "he's been flipping us all off for four years--arrogant a-hole." And it helps that ABC calls it "purported." That means they think it's controversial, which means other people will as well.
So I'm interested in seeing if some of the people who are giving the man the benefit of the doubt will now look at that finger and say "I've had enough."

Media Fear Censorship as Bush Requests Caution
The request from the White House was polite and guarded, but the message was crystal-clear: U.S. television networks should think long and hard before beaming another prerecorded rant from Osama bin Laden or his al-Qaeda terrorist network to hundreds of millions of viewers around the world.
In a conference call with network brass early yesterday morning, Condoleezza Rice, President George W. Bush's national security adviser, warned that Mr. bin Laden and his followers may be trying to incite fresh violence against the United States.
She asked CBS, NBC, ABC, Fox and CNN to "exercise caution" in broadcasting statements from the world's most wanted man and his supporters.
Many in the news media criticized the extraordinary request from the White House yesterday, saying the Bush administration is getting precariously close to declaring war not only on terrorists, but on a free press.
The telephone call from Ms. Rice to TV land came after the release Tuesday of a videotape -- the second from Mr. bin Laden's group in three days -- that showed al-Qaeda spokesman Sulaiman Abu Ghaith referring to the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks as a "good deed" and promising more attacks against U.S. interests. A cameo by Mr. bin Laden appeared Sunday, when the Saudi-born militant thanked God for filling America with fear.
Both tapes were first broadcast on the Qatar-based news network Al-Jazeera, then replayed by CNN. Other networks subsequently picked up the footage, and newspapers around the world (including this one) transcribed the tirades word for word.
Yesterday, ABC, CBS, CNN, FOX and NBC issued statements promising not to air al-Qaeda statements live, without a review.

In the past, no Al Qaeda tape was sent in English, all of them were in Arabic. His comments seem forced and stereotypical...
Yeah, I thought odd that he used a phrase like "the streets will run with blood" which has Catholic connotations. I did a quick google using that phrase with the words "muslim" and "islam" and didn't turn up anything beyond what's already associated with the current story. The phrase sounds similar to the sort of religious rhetoric found in other the other videos, but it doesn't seem like it would be something that a Muslim terrorist would say. The whole thing feels like a hoax.

It's pretty weird actually, the freepers seem rather downtrodden. Some of them were even questioning the authenticity of the tape. "It doens't seem real to me but what do i know" was one of the posts. So many possibilities with that one. The mood is somber in other words. And it's beautiful.

WOW. I just read the transcript of the Brokaw interview with Kerry. Check it out. It was somewhat adversarial, but there was one question that just floored me.
Brokaw: Someone has analyzed the President's military aptitude tests and yours, and concluded that he has a higher IQ than you do.
Kerry: That's great. More power. I don't know how they've done it, because my record is not public. So I don't know where you're getting that from.
Can you believe that? What kind of question is that? Who is "someone?" No qualifier, no explanation.
And this guy's a journalist? Anyway, I thought Kerry answered his questions pretty well. At least it seemed that way in the transcript.
Here's the link (sorry, I don't know how to create links or do italics):

In July 2003, Valerie Plame, who tracked WMD, was outed and her entire network of contacts exposed. Do you suppose hundreds of tons of conventional explosive would be something she and others in her field might want to keep an eye on? WMD doesn't just mean nuclear. If there were people trying to track this shit, would Bush have some reason to disrupt that?

Kerry supporters are motivated. Reality is demotivating the Republicans.

Hi Theodoric,
Maybe most people here DID know what kind of person Bush really was (in 2000), but I didn't. My husband did and kept beating it into my head that "this guy" is no kind of compassionate conservative or compassionate anything. Bush "almost" took me in too, but in the end, he DIDN'T get me and I DID vote for Gore. I'm just saying that he sold alot of people a bill of goods, whether most people should have known known better or not. It's always being said here that the "sheeple" don't pay attention, read the newspaper or know anything about American and World history OR their candidates. If that is true and all many people knew about Bush is what he TOLD them in 2000, well...there you go.

I can't believe Brokaw would allow himself to get burnt like that! Geez, the clown who supposedly decided that Bush has a bigger IQ number than Kerry is the same joker that claimed that African-Americans have lower IQ's than caucasians! Doesn't NBC have a research department?
Anybody who has watched that tape segment where Bush is asked about Indian sovereignty knows that Kerry has a higher IQ than Bush. After seeing that they know that Bush now has an IQ well below average.

My hunch was always that Valerie had the goods on something Cheney-related. His company did sell dual-use technologies to countries listed as terrorist sponsors, while he was CEO. Then there was Rummy on the board of a company that sold dual-use stuff to North Korea. I guess I was just thinking along the lines of things similar to BCCI and Iran/Contra evil deeds. Cheney would sell anything to anyone, while pretending to be defending America.

I remember reading some interview with Drudge mentioning that he makes scads and scads of cash, probably through advertising. I bet if somebody did the sleuthing there would be some suspicious connections between his advertisers.
Considering his probable bandwidth costs I'm amazed he's able to pay it off with ads for Iraqi card packs.

Brokaw was referring to something called 'military IQ'. What the fuck was he talking about?
Anonymous
A dailyKos commenter said yesterday he read somewhere on a rightwing site
that Bush was in 95th percentile on his military aptitude test, whereas Kerry scored in the 92nd or 91st percentile.
I just can't believe that Brokaw took that thinly sourced, unverifiable, 35-yr old thing to Kerry.
You can tell these guys are now jealous of Kerry that he is going to be next prez and there isn't a thing they can do about it.

" it says as-sahab. i'm no arabic speaker but shouldnt it be al-sahab?"
No. al gets a little mangled in some words. The Arabic alphabet is split into two approximately equal groups. For one (Moon Letters), you pronounce al as , well, "al". for the other (Sun Letters), however, you pronounce al as "a + {the sound of the letter following the l}". For example, I would write "al-nour" (the light), but I would say it "an-nour." When Arabic words with sun letters get transliterated into English, the l just gets transmorgified for convience sake. As-sahab is perfectly acceptable.

The common denominator is the following: either the tape is a hoax or it is real. EITHER WAY, it shows an agenda of seeking to reinstall Bush. It would be particularly interesting if it is authentic, because Al Qaeda is many things, including evil, but bonehead stupid isn't one of them. 9-11 was a VERY socially sophisticated operation. They couldn't but know that this would put Bush in.
Also, it usually takes weeks to confirm anything by the CIA, how come it is confirmed right away, and on DRUDGE.....??? (venue allows plausible deniability, since drudge isn't really a definitive source)

Doesn't this terror video seem like the perfect Rove trick? Kerry can't say the video is fake without Bush jumping all over him for being weak on terror, there is no way to prove or disprove anything before the election, nobody would believe that Bush would be behind a threat that says there will be a terror attack if he is elected, and on Sunday or Monday when a Rove hired thug comes out and swears he was paid by the Kerry campaign to fake the video, all the news media will fall all over themselves to condemn Kerry for this hideous abuse of the fear of terrorism. How are we going to stop this October Surprise from unfolding?

I never look at freeper bullshit, but the gay terrorist thing piqued my interest. Much as I hate to admit that they could be right about anything, after viewing the tape this morning, where Charlie and Diane breathlessly treated it like the Second Coming and some combover terrorism 'expert' solemnly declared that he took it seriously, I have to admit it looked like an amateur hour audition tape.
Oh, and I think the freepers meant 'gay' as in Stan and Cartman's 'that's totally gay.'
I don't see how this tape can mean much. However, the 380 tons of missing explosives?
Just blew up Bush's chances.

Kerry should just question the tapes
authenticity, fuck it. He can doubt
the authenticity of the tape without
being weak. Most of the freepers
themselves believe it is fake already,
so what would be the problem? When
the paid source does come forth and
say Kerry made him do it, it will be
like when Gore got the debate tape
and turned it in to authorities; Kerry
just standing there all innocent like
"whoa, i dunno what's going on here
but it seems pretty serious..."
Of course, he should not do what Gore
did and say nothing about it; he
should accuse Rove of planting the
mole every time he opens his mouth.
Clinton says; scandals are free press
Can you imagine what sort of fun

The video I saw on TV of the 'american jihadi' reminds me of the guy from an old rap group with the Groucho Marx nose, mustache, and glasses, who wore a big furry hat, japed and capered a lot...
just can't remember his name.
Maybe it's one of the Beastie Boys?

With the presidential election just days away, officials are wary of a possible trick by an impostor.
"Without being able to authenticate it, it's just some guy talking on a tape," the U.S. intelligence official said.
So it looks like the CIA edging towards it being a hoax.

CIA can't authenticate alleged al Qaeda tape:
So, what do we need ABC News to do now?
-Full, public apology and retraction
-Assemble a blue-ribbon bullshit committee to figure out How This Happened and make sure it Doesn't Happen Again
-Peter Jennings resigns
-ABC News executives resigns
-ABC News spikes a pro-Bush story to make up
Anything else that ABC News should do for publishing unauthenticated material? We don't have to look back in history very far, and nobody has to mention kerning either.
