I'MMA LET YOU FINISH

Draft Frist!

GravatarNice try. The kiddoes have been talking about this issue for months.

Most college kids know Republicans are uncool. They always sound like dorks when they try to be hip. It would be like Richard Nixon trying to give a high five.

GravatarHuh?

I don't get it.

GravatarAnd didn't Rock the Vote have that big stink with Ed Gillespie threatening them for saying they feared a draft if the Republicans stayed in power, or something like that?

GravatarNice site! The editors at the ZZ News Portal occasionally scan the web manually for interesting feed content and we came across your site today. We would like to invite you to add your site's url to our OpenRing as your material appears interesting and aligned with our readership. If you are interested you can find further information at ZardozZ OpenWeb and at the ZZ OpenRing . Hope you'll join us...

GravatarWhat I meant is the post was confusing. Most college kids though are smart enough to understand that Bush is much more likely to reinstate the draft than Kerry. So this seems like wasted effort for the GOP.

GravatarWhat's not to get? The Republicans are trying to paint an entire party with a brush that works on only one Democrat.

GravatarSmart of them, I think. They always win or at least come out even when they fuzz up an issue. But college kids are pretty savvy so we'll have to see if it works.

GravatarOT

What's up with the Newsweek poll that has W gaining momentum?

GravatarIsn't the bill there? Isn't it real?

It's irresponsible for either candidate to say that they categorically WON'T reinstate the draft.

GravatarOT: anyone listening to the BBC special from Miami on NPR about the election happening right now? calls from all over the world. i've been listening in fits and starts, so i'm not sure if there is a strong sentiment or current of opinion clearly in one direction or another...

what IS clear is that the BBC interviewer, instead of letting the caller just speak in shorthand "I won't for Kerry b/c of terrorism" (meaning what, really??) he is actually forcing people to go beyond superficiality and slogans (on either side). quite refreshing, really...

GravatarWe need a push poll in IA asking if it would influence one's vote to learn that Bush is a pig fucker. It's been reported people saw this first hand.
I've actually been expecting Rangle's bill to be used. Good thing RTV gave Gillasspick the finger.

GravatarMan that must be true. That guy's honest, like all republicans. Well. Maybe he means well. Wait. If he doesn't even mean well, why are we talking about him? Oh yeah. He's an asshole.

GravatarIsn't the bill there? Isn't it real?

It's irresponsible for either candidate to say that they categorically WON'T reinstate the draft.

GravatarMy 21 year old college son thinks it's laughable. We're in PA, but I can't imagine that kids in Iowa are that much more gullible. BTW, doesn't this mean that the Repukes are admitting that a draft is indeed a possibility, and highlighting it in the minds of the potential IOWA draftees? Who will these kids want in charge when this thought crosses their minds? Not Bush.

My son and all of his friends are first time committed voters--for Kerry! (And they are not counted in the polls.)

GravatarYes, the bill is an effort by the congressional black caucus to stop the economic draft we have now, where the children of the poor (and usually minorities) end up fighting and dying in wars like Iraq, where our leaders don't have a dog in the fight, so to speak. They figure if the pain is distributed evenly, to the children of the rich and middle classes, we won't go to war unnecessarily.

Worth reading on the subject of family involvement is James Roosevelt Jrs article: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/6364.../site/newsweek/

GravatarMy sister, who lives in Iowa, received this in the mail this week.

This is pathetic!

GravatarAnyone with half a brain saw this coming when Rangel did that. I understand his motivation but it is just begging for a Rethug dirty trick like this that distorts (or in fact ignores) the context of the bill.

GravatarSewer:

Yes, it is irresponsible.

The best way to counter this is to remind college students that a draft is already taking place, in the form of a back-door draft of people who were eligible to get out, but weren't allowed, of IRRs being called up, after they thought they were done with the "active" part of their enlistment, of National Guard and Reserves being active far more than one weekend a month/two weeks a year, leaving behind good-paying jobs and the families who depended on them. And etc.

GravatarOT: the nytimes article on saturday about undecided voters gives away the complete inadequecy of their own polls. they drop the fact that their polls on oct14-17 show that 11% of bush voters are voting for kerry but 7% of gore voters are voting for bush. their tracking poll on the same date showed a 46-46 rv tie with a 47-46 lv tie. those 2 results cannot logically coexist because gore won the last election. so if their own polls show more bush switchers their numbers are fucked up and they should know it and answer for it.

GravatarSorry about that, there was supposed to be the text of a letter in there. The letter read:

Dear Amanda,
The military has found the floor plans of a San Diego school in a terrorist camp in Iraq.
I recall that one of the 9-11-01 terrorists spent time in Cedar Rapids.  Are there floor plans for any Midwest school over there?  Does it really make sense to consult the U.N. or other countries prior to defending our children from Islamic terrorists?
Please join me and vote for President Bush on November 2nd.

Sincerely,
Concerned Grandma

Gravatarconscription is only a political liability if there is a war. the republicans are the war supporters.

GravatarEschaton is coming up on MSNBC. They just showed it live.

Gravatarkissfan, that is the most laughable "letter" I've seen in ages.

Yeah, we should vote for Bush because that would be a "historical document" to him (if it existed), the same way the August 6, 2001 PDB was a historical document saying "Bin Laden Determined to Attack Inside U.S."

What a stupid joke.

GravatarThe NYTimes recently ran an article about the Bush administration's already existing plans for a draft.. forced conscription of medical personnel. It's already in the NYTimes paid archives, but if you search on "medical draft" it comes up within the first few abstracts.
A draft is a hidden tax burden on communities. It removes providers of vital services like medical care, and reduces tax revenues to state and local community by removing taxpayers.

GravatarHave you contacted your media whore today?

http://www.fair.org/media-contac...ntact- list.html

GravatarMy big question:

Do the Repugnicans believe all this shit, or are they as cynical as I assume they are?

Are they stupid or evil? I guess it doesn't matter, but maybe someone could enlighten me.

GravatarOT, but another outrage looming in FL.

Link to this WAPO story, http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp...- 2004Oct29.html to learn how EPA plans to find families in Duval County, FL with children (age 2 & under) to use as guinea pigs. For up to $970 per family, the study is to see how rapidly the kids absorb pesticides and what effects they have.

From the Oct 18 issue of Chemistry and Engineering News, about the study:

"The children chosen to participate must live in homes with potential high pesticide use. Their parents must agree to spray or have pesticides sprayed inside their homes routinely during the two-year study period, and will receive up to $970 for participating."

The study is run/funded by the American Chemical Council, EPA, CDC, and the Duval Co Health Dept.

From the 22-29 October Guardian (via WAPO)

"In 2000, 42% of ballots rejected by the Duval Co election board came from mainly black areas."

I'm a newbie at posting to weblogs. I'd appreciate any advice.

GravatarI recall that one of the 9-11-01 terrorists spent time in Cedar Rapids.  Are there floor plans for any Midwest school over there?

Utter bullshit. A muslim in Cedar Rapids was swept up in the Ashcroft-fueled antiterrorist hysteria. He provided faked IDs to illegal immigrants, which was sufficient to label him a terrorist under new Patriot Act guidelines. After much investigation, no connection was ever made to any actual terrorists.

Gravataroops, sorry for the unclosed italics

Gravatartoday we received three of the glossy anti-kerry brochures that had been arriving at about one every other day.

GravatarThink about this before you cast your vote.

Look at the following list of names and consider who they would most likely vote for if they were allowed to vote in our coming election,

Martin Luther King
Abraham Lincoln
Thomas Jefferson
Benjamin Franklin
Thomas Paine
Gandhi
Eleanor Roosevelt
Robert Kennedy
Nelson Mandela
Bishop Tutu
The Lorax

When you cast your vote will you be voting the same way as you think the above people will vote?

How closely aligned with these people will you be

GravatarThis won't work. College kids are watching Eminem's "Mosh" video, that will swing many more people than this desperate last minute attempt by College Republicans.

Bush is the war monger. No ads are going to change that perception.

GravatarTheir whole campaign is one of lies.

I for one won't spend one second recognizing the legitimacy of his "election" if Bush manages to defeat democracy and secure the White House again.

GravatarDo the Repugnicans believe all this shit, or are they as cynical as I assume they
are?

Short answer: yes.

The level of cynicism that enabled
them to even consider Bush as a
presidential candidate is almost
beyond belief.

GravatarFrankly, they've got a point. Rangel has pulled no punches about his reasons in advocating a resumption of the draft, and I think he's right.

This rubbish that our nation can blithely pursue the military course which has been charted for it is irrational. Between the (mis)administration's lies, which proclaims the status quo sufficient, and Kerry's assurance that no draft will be required, hangs reality.

"No draft will occur in my administration". George Bush and/or John Kerry.

"I've a secret plan to end the war in Vietnam, and with honor". Richard Nixon.

For Christ's sake, use the brain God gave you. Over and out.

GravatarRepublicans fall into three general categories:

1) Evil

2) Ignorant

3) Both 1 & 2

GravatarIt's just another example of how desperate the Republicans are. They have nothing to run on, and they never have. All they had was fear, fear, fear while they looted the store. At least I can respect the Costra Nostra code of honor, but this? It's a sad joke.

They know they're going to lose, and they can't stop us. Stupid nodnarbs.

Gravatarstill - thanks a lot Charley. Legislation shouldn't be performance art, and we get plenty of that on both sides of the aisle.

GravatarRepublicans don't seem to understand their audience. The stuff that works on trialer trash Christians (no offense, but it's true) might lose you votes among college students.

GravatarI live in Iowa. I was in the post office yesterday picking up mail when my neighbor, a sweet 82 y/o lady got a GOP mailer with the "DRAFT!" scare message.

She just glanced at it, saw the Republican logo and the word "draft," muttered, "Why do those damn Republicans want to start the draft up again?"

Then she tossed it in the trash.

GravatarRangle's bill was already voted on, I thought, even he didn't vote for it. It was a protest gesture aimed at the economic conditions that make the military the only option for many otherwise disadvantaged young people.

Personally, I think it was a clumsy granstanding effort on Rangle's part, something of a tin ear moment, though I don't dispute the argument he's making.

I wouldn't pay much attention to anything that goes out on the air the next few days unless it originates somewhere beyond the reach of either party or its operatives. Furthermore, anyone swayable by anything that appears in the next few days is not someone you want to pay any attention to anyway.

And Rangel-protest votes suck! Just ask Kerry. Don't give them anything. Besides, Democrats in the House can't even go to the bathroom without permission from the BugMan.

GravatarJust got back from le tour de neighborhood. 180 homes. No yard signs=154, Kerry signs=25, Bush signs=1.

GravatarWe are on track for historic turnout in this election. Voters are coming out in record numbers for John Kerry.

And that has the Republicans scared. They have no plan, no hope, no way to win this election except to stop people from voting. Their strategy is simple:

1.Discourage Democratic voters from going to the polls by filling the airwaves with predictions of doom and gloom.

2.Delay voting and create lines at polls by challenging voters and election officials.

3.Deny voters the opportunity to cast their votes and have them counted.

But their strategy won't work. We will stop their attempts to deny our rights by using the best weapons in our arsenal: information and education.

It's vital that you know your voting rights. Take a minute today to make sure that others know their rights, too. Download our guide to voting rights:

http://www.democrats.org/votingrights/

Make sure to print out multiple copies and help us spread the word by distributing them as widely as you can.

For information about finding your polling place, use our polling place locator at Democrats.org:

Remember: Voting is your right, and you are protected under the law. Exercise your right by voting for John Kerry, John Edwards, and all our Democratic candidates on November 2!

GravatarThe Republicans have a consistent and disturbing history of accusing their opponents of the very things that they themselves are doing. (I believe Arianna Huffington called it "projection")

So I take this as a sort of Bizarro admission that the GOP will reinstate the draft if elected.

But then, we already knew that....

Gravataryeah kei & yuri...i now have six glossy flyers from the rethugs and 5 from the dems defending themselves. do these things work? i mean, isn't every american alive so jaded by now between publishers clearing house sweepsstakes and e-mail spam that the just don't give a damn?

GravatarSomeone read this story by Newsweek on MSNBC and tell me if they are saying their poll is based on ONLY 153 respondants? The statistic is way down in the story. And it's a glowing report for Bush.

http://tinyurl.com/5p8w4

They are saying Bush has a 50-44 lead in likely voters, with a margin of error of 4 percent, or 9 points spread. So they are still a dead heat.

Still, this story seems so totally misleading.

GravatarRoddy - I believe the master, Gary Frazier, said it best when he said:

"These brownshirts are projecting like the octoplex down at the mall."

Thanks Gary, even months later I still laugh every time I think of that.

GravatarSan Diego Union-Tribune:

Homemade security catches act on tape

ENCINITAS – Pete Nolan said he knew he had to do something after someone made off with his 20-foot-long sign opposing the governor's recall last year.

This time around, Nolan wanted to show his support for John Kerry and John Edwards with an equally-huge sign on his garage, but he had a feeling it would also attract thieves or vandals.

So he pieced together a homemade security system, installing a motion-activated alarm and floodlight and a video camera near the 5-foot-tall nylon sign.

This week, Nolan caught his first victim.

A man triggered the alarm and light Tuesday just before midnight as he ripped the sign, which is highly visible to traffic on Encinitas Boulevard, from the wall, according to an incident report filed with the Sheriff's Department.

Nolan said the man dropped the sign after realizing it was firmly attached to the structure by a thick rope, then jumped a fence and jogged south onto North Vulcan Avenue.

As neighbors called the Sheriff's Department, Nolan said, he chased the man, caught up to him near Vulcan and Encinitas Boulevard, grabbed his arm, then tackled him and "sat on him until the police got there."

The suspect, whom the sheriff's report identified as Jessie Irvin Mathews, 22, of Vista, initially told deputies that Nolan had "jumped him and tried to rape him" for no apparent reason, Nolan said.

One problem with that: Mathews was caught on camera pulling the banner off the garage and starting to run away with it, according to the incident report.

After viewing the tape, deputies transported Mathews to their Encinitas station and cited him for attempted petty theft.

Nolan, 40, said he "had a pretty good feeling" he would catch someone in the act and was overjoyed that his homemade security system did its job.

"It's my Republican trap," he said."

Nolan, however, said he regrets that he couldn't make out the license plate of a pickup that pulled up during the chase. He said the driver yelled at Mathews, urging him to "hurry up," before driving off.

Gravatar"The FLN estimated in 1962 that nearly eight years of revolution had cost 300,000 dead from war-related causes. Algerian sources later put the figure at approximately 1.5 million dead, while French officials estimated it at 350,000. French military authorities listed their losses at nearly 18,000 dead (6,000 from noncombat-related causes) and 65,000 wounded. European civilian casualties exceeded 10,000 (including 3,000 dead) in 42,000 recorded terrorist incidents. According to French figures, security forces killed 141,000 rebel combatants, and more than 12,000 Algerians died in internal FLN purges during the war. An additional 5,000 died in the "café wars" in France between the FLN and rival Algerian groups. French sources also estimated that 70,000 Muslim civilians were killed, or abducted and presumed killed, by the FLN".

GravatarI'm confused. I don't see Charlie Rangel's name anywhere on my ballot.

Mars, bitches! Kerry/Edwards in a mutherfukkin righteous tsunami!

GravatarYou can't outwork, outspend, outlie fuckin Rebub mouthbreathers. Only one way to beat the fuckers. Dry up their corporate sponsors. Quit cable teevee.

GravatarSCLM cable stations have done exactly no exposure of the world of hurt the Army and Marines are actually in and why we might need a draft regardless of who is president. I sure as hell wouldn't trust Bush to use it.

GravatarToo late. The game's over for the moment.

The only things still up for grabs are local elections - I, for example, have to grit my teeth and vote Republican for my local JP, who in his role properly dealt with a small claims court case I had before him. I'll be doing much the same thing for my local Constable - because I used to work with him and I know he's a complete layabout and all round good guy. And then there are the seemingly endless initiatives I have to make a judgement about, of just stunning particularity and detail... Iowans have to face the same kinds of situations, but the top of the ticket is decided and done.

Gravatar"It's my Republican trap," he said."

Excellent!

GravatarIt's just awful when your opponents marshal actual facts against you, isn't it? And after all those Democratic talking points on draft fear mongering as well! Is it back to social security scares now?

GravatarMorons, who's more likely to start another war? the warmonger Bush or the democrats?

college kids are smarter than that.

GravatarOT but funny,
I got a whole bag of flyers, etc., from the local Republicans left hanging on the doorknob yesterday. Nothing remarkable there except I'm in Illinois and a Keyes brochure and window sticker was included with a picture form the debates with the caption nearby
"Great Orator of the 19th century-Abraham Lincoln.
Great orator of the 20th century-Everret Dirksen.
Great orator of the 21st century-Alan Keyes"
At least the local GOP here acknowledges him as their candidate, unlike other parts of the state.

Yeah, but it has to be done right. It has to be massive, simultaneous, coordinated, and announced well ahead of time.

And before we do that, let's see what kind of success we have in getting the Fairness Doctrine reinstated.

Also, President Kerry should issue an executive order declaring Ann Coulter and Sean Hannity to be Iraqi citizens.

GravatarIf Iowa goes fucking Republican this year they goddamn better fucking lose the right to be the first Democratic caucus. If they can't deliver their electoral votes they have no business being the leading decider for Democratic nominees. Same for New Hampshire and their sacred first primary.

GravatarKarl Rove says they have tricks up their sleeve.

Now, today, we get this jackass statement from a Bush insider according to the NY Daily News:

We want people to think 'terrorism' for the last four days," said a Bush-Cheney campaign official. "And anything that raises the issue in people's minds is good for us."

A senior GOP strategist added, "anything that makes people nervous about their personal safety helps Bush."

He called it "a little gift," saying it helps the President but doesn't guarantee his reelection.

Coincidink? I think not.

Gravatarha, ha, ha, ha, ha. It's nice to see someone flinging the Dem's shit back in their faces, isn't it?

GravatarHoly Crap!

I think I live near someone affiliated with Tom Delay.

Right now 4-5 people are sitting in front of a house about 5 doors down from me with a bullhorn and some signs. They have a truck with side board signs in the back that say "Get Rid of the Bugman". I live in a middle class burb of Houston, not rich enough for the bugman.

Exciting. Running back out now to see what's going on.

Gravatar"It's just awful when your opponents marshal actual facts against you, isn't it?"

Uh, no. Pay attention. I'll type slowly so even Republicans can understand.

Charlie Rangel wants a draft that makes sure there are no exceptions for cowardly sons of Republican congressman. It would be preferable to have no draft at all, however, if there is to be a draft, Charlie Rangel wants to make sure that it is equitable.

You'll notice that neither presidential candidate was mentioned in that description. However, Bush has no plan in Iraq and is roundly hated around the world, making it impossible for him to get help with troops from other nations. Thus, if he is elected, Bush, Rumsfeld, and Cheney will begin to draft in order to continue their foolish dream of world empire. Kerry has a plan to get help in Iraq. Kerry will restore honor and dignity to the White House and be able to get help from coutnries that are disgusted by Bush. Kerry will institute an actual plan for securing Iraq which allows the NATO and the UN to send in troops to help out. With Kerry, we will not need a draft. With Bush, we will.

GravatarMeanwhile in Manhattan:

Two men were taken into custody on Friday after illegally landing a hot-air balloon imprinted with a "Kerry" sign in Central Park, police said.

The men, Thomas Robins, 44, and Ronald DiGiovanni, 51, brought down the balloon at about 2:30 p.m. in the park's North Meadow.

Have you guys heard of an American comic called Rich Hall? He spends a lot of time here in the UK, and is on the BBC quite alot.

Last night he did his 1 hour take on the USA election. It was hilarious. He explained how the right wing loons had taken over talk radio in the last 15 years. Anyway he pretended to be a Rush wanabie. Very funny. He was pretending to be raging against state education, and state funded health care, and said that state education will always lead to young muslims with rocket launchers. PRICELESS. He said that Bush uses words straight out of comics. "Your with us or against us" is straight from Spiderman.

He also went through the declaration of independecne, and the reason to get rid of King Geoge. About 4 of the points you could make for getting rid of the current George.

He is from big sky country.

GravatarI'm beginning to think that Kerry needs to make a bold move here in the last few days. I guess his strategy is to take the high road on the Bin Laden tape, but I think he maybe needs to go ballistic:

"We want people to think 'terrorism' for the last four days," said a Bush-Cheney campaign official. "And anything that raises the issue in people's minds is good for us."

A senior GOP strategist added, "anything that makes people nervous about their personal safety helps Bush."

CNN had Bush over Gore by ten points on Oct 20, 2000.

Harris had Bush up by five against Gore on Oct. 28, 2000.

GravatarI think the the little gift is for Kerry...

"So: Having the American public think of terror is a good thing. Macchiavelli, Lee Atwater, and Goebbels would all be so, so proud.

I do hope that Bush is having Laura or the twins write out thank-you cards to Mr. Bin Laden for his “little gift.” If there is a single quote from the past few months that deserves long legs in the media, it’s this one.

I would like to know just what kind of animal could vote for the SOB after this. Unfortunately, I’m sure I’ll find out."

GravatarA quick non-political point:

Julia Louis-Dreyfus did marry a co-star from SNL but it was former "Weekend Update" anchor Brad Hall. Rich Hall was also an SNL cast member, which I admit is confusing.

Gravatar"And I have a feeling that it could tilt the election a bit. In fact, I'm a little inclined to think that Karl Rove, the political manager at the White House, who is a very clever man, he probably set up bin Laden to this thing."

Lord, heed my prayer and let the Rove attack dogs try to launch a smear campaign on Uncle Walter. And while they're at it, they could go after Santa and Captain Kangaroo.

C'mon trolls, get the ball rolling..

They show Kerry up by y one point today, and Gore down by 4 points at the comparable point in 2000...not that I have any confidence at all in the methodology of the polls this year, even Zogby's.

I live and work in a small community, essentially built up around a private, liberal arts college. Thankfully, the majority of people I know are hardcore anti-G.W. Dipshit. Unfortunately that hasn't stopped me from getting calls from John-I-Used-to-Have-A-Spine-McCain and a whole slew of East Coast cops, firemen, and others with phony accents

I was backing John Kerry before the primaries, when all my friends were Deaniacs, so the one thing all these freakin' ads have done for me is burn into my memory all the local candidates that I WON'T be voting for.

GravatarMy Bad,

Long time reader, first time poster.

Cut me some slack, I was born far north of here...

GravatarIn order to fight the resource wars of the future, we will need bodies. As long as our national security policy includes access and control over cheap oil (whatever is left that is) we will contunue to fight for it.

These resource wars are just beginning, a military draft is quite likely in our future.

Gravatar"Personally, I think it was a clumsy granstanding effort on Rangle's part, something of a tin ear moment, though I don't dispute the argument he's making."

Don't forget that Rangel is a REPRESENTATIVE, even if he is a Senator. His constituency may have demanded this kind of call for equality in service.

Gravatar"The suspect, whom the sheriff's report identified as Jessie Irvin Mathews, 22, of Vista...."

Vista, for those that don't know, is a hotbed of religious fundamentalism. They periodically ban books and certain teachings from their schools (or try to), are hysterical about Wicca, and they are hip deep in those Rapture texts as well.

More Wackos for W.

GravatarVote for Bush if you approve of his policy of allowing Osama bin Laden to roam the world freely making videotapes. Otherwise, vote for Kerry.

GravatarIt won't work.
These Iowa kids aren't that stupid.
They know which party is the one out there starting wars and invading countries left and right.
They know which party is the one in need of troops to fight more wars.
They also know which party is the party of the warmonger and the party of anti-war protester.

The draft issue is ours alone cause it just makes more sense for democrats to bring it up. Republicans on the other hand are making fools of themselves.
I think this could actually earn us more votes since undecideds are more likely to see the republicans lying about this than democrats.

Keep it up bozos!

MYOB'
.

GravatarWho listens to radio these days, anyway?

GravatarThink about this before you cast your vote.

Look at the following list of names and consider who they would most likely vote for if they were allowed to vote in our coming election,

Martin Luther King
Abraham Lincoln
Thomas Jefferson
Benjamin Franklin
Thomas Paine
Gandhi
Eleanor Roosevelt
Robert Kennedy
Nelson Mandela
Bishop Tutu
The Lorax

When you cast your vote will you be voting the same way as you think the above people will vote?

How closely aligned with these people will you be?

GravatarDo these people ever STOP lying?

GravatarMost college kids know Republicans are uncool. They always sound like dorks when they try to be hip. It would be like Richard Nixon trying to give a high five.

They had a story in the Philadelphia Weekly a couple of months back on Penn Repukes.

All WASPS.....one dork from Texas for whom "awesome" was the only word in his vocabularly. Sheltered little candy-asses that were all for Bush's war while safe on campus.

They posed on the cover of the paper wearing golf shirts.

Philadelphia Weekly got some really nasty letters about the little ass-clowns.

Make sure to print out multiple copies and help us spread the word by distributing them as widely as you can.

Remember: Voting is your right, and you are protected under the law. Exercise your right by voting for John Kerry, John Edwards, and all our Democratic candidates on November 2!

GravatarI'm a registered Independent and so have a huge target painted on my back.

Today a woman knocked on my door. She was wearing a vest with pumpkins on it. At first, I did not see the very small Kerry/Edwards button she was wearing. She kindly asked me if I planned to vote and if I knew where to vote. I said yes. She then informed me that I could go to vote early today at the courthouse, which I appreciated because I did not know there was early voting in my state. She then handed me a flyer about the current governor of Indiana, smiled and left. At no time did she ask me how I planned to cast my vote, nor did she urge me to vote one way or the other.

Contrast this with the visit I had last Tuesday from the visitor from the Bush/Cheney campaign. She wore a hat that said BUSH/CHENEY on it and was all decked-out in sparkly red white and blue stripes. She told me I had been identified as a swing voter in this county and asked me how I was going to vote. I told her I planned to vote for Kerry. She then said snidely, "Well if Kerry wins, we'll all get hit with nuclear bombs! Only the president can keep us safe." I could tell from her expression of worry and the energy she spent on it that she really believed her statement.

"Well," I said. "We all have to die of something. I'd rather be nuked in a democracy practicing free speech, than live in a facist state wondering when I'm going to be hauled to jail for criticizing the president."

"Oh!" she exclaimed, threw her pamphlets down on the porch steps and left in a huff.

I leave you to draw your own conclusions.

GravatarWow. I have to give the Republicans props for this. This is hardcore.

Now let's make sure they never hold any position of power ever again.

Gravatarniles: Grinnell?

GravatarJust contacted MSNBC on Rush. thanks for the tip jimmy james.

To the (hopefully still) respected halls of NBC:

Please accept this letter as a plea to not feature conservative radio talk show host Rush Limbaugh as a commentator during election night coverage.

While I have never written a major network before, and everyone is guaranteed the right to free speech, the issue of offering Rush Limbaugh as a responsible political pundit defiles the reputation that your news organization has built over many decades. To pick just a few examples from this year, he compared the abuse of Iraqi prisoners to a fraternity prank, telling Americans and an international audience on the taxpayer-funded American Forces Radio that the torture was a "brilliant maneuver" and that the photos were "good old pornography." He has also labeled Senator Kerry a "stupid S.O.B." and a "gigolo." His racist commentary also makes him unsuitable for an appearance on a network as distinguished as NBC. Just last month, commenting on Jesse Jackson joining the Kerry campaign, stated: "The Kerry campaign has finally gotten a chocolate chip," sparking outrage in the African-American community. Rush Limbaugh has also made other racially-charged statements on ESPN and was summarily removed from their NFL coverage.

I hope you equally consider the ramifications of "legitimizing" extreme viewpoints, openly partisan propaganda and hate-filled opinions that have no place on the public airwaves.

Rush Limbaugh has a reckless disregard for facts and truth. In one example, he falsely stated that the 9-11 Commission report confirmed Vice President Dick Cheney's claim that September 11 hijacker Mohamed Atta may have met with an Iraqi intelligence officer in April 2001. As you know, and your network has reported, this meeting did not occur.

Again, everyone is guaranteed a right to free speech no matter where he or she resides on the political spectrum. There are plenty of conservative opinions who can make intellectually honest arguments without having to reside to divisive and misleading language. Unfortunately, Rush Limbaugh is not one of these voices, nor is an extreme left-wing voice.

Many of us in the center of the political spectrum know where to find Rush Limbaugh on our radios. If he appears on your network for election coverage it will indicate that your network no longer lives up to the slogan, "Proud as a Peacock," and many will boycott your network(s) and the advertisers who support your organization.

Thank you in advance for your time and consideration, and I wish Mr. Brokaw a wonderful retirement. I met him Boston many years ago and he's a professional.

Gravatarraspberry - You Indiana folks have some good sense.

GravatarJimmy James:

I appreciate what you're trying to do. Really, I do.

Memes are powerful - they can grow legs and walk (or run) from a gleam in someone's eye right onto the front pages.

But proto-memes can also be very annoying when they're repeated ad nauseum in a forum like this. Everyone at Eschaton has seen your posts dozens of times by now.

PLEASE STOP.

Gravatarouch .... have to agree after scrolling up jimmy james ... heart's in the right place, but the repeats are kinda agitating

GravatarSally,
Rich Hall= Sniglets
Can't remember what they are tho.

GravatarLast ditch tactics.

They're desperate to do ANYTHING to change the election numbers. You would have to believe that George Bush, who lies about everything, refused to talk to MTV, and has committed us to a fiasco in Iraq would tell the truth about the draft.

GravatarWow, I should have refreshed befor
I sent that one. Only about 3 hours late.

Bush and TRUTH are incongruous.

Totally, dude.

GravatarHe has also labeled Senator Kerry a "stupid S.O.B." and a "gigolo."

A "gigolo"? That's hilarious coming from a fat junkie who's had three marriages go south and who I think is a self-hating homosexual!

Methinks the Vulgar Pigboy is jealous!

Gravatarha, ha, ha, ha, ha. It's nice to see someone flinging the Dem's shit back in their faces, isn't it?

Asshole

GravatarEven mentioning the draft hurts Bush, this campaign will backfire.

GravatarThe American Axis Of Evil
As much as I hate to admit it, we have an axis of evil here in our own country. Its intent is to totally destroy our way of life. I know I am going to catch a lot of flak for what I am about to say but someone has to say it.

The ACLU started out as a good organization. It is now the tool most used to subvert some of Americas most valued traditions. Liberal left extremists supports them.

Next are the liberal Democrats like Jesse Jackson, Al Sharpton, Louise Farrakhan, Tom Dashle, Ted Kennedy, Hillary Clinton, Tom Leahy, and so many others that they would be impossible to list.

Next is the liberal Hollywood crowd.

Next are the stupid environmentalist who would rather have a forest burn down to the ground than have a few loggers thin them out, or deny farmers water to raise their crops because of some stupid mud eating fish like themselves!

Next are the spineless Congressmen and women who make us dependent on foreign oil by denying us the right to drill for oil in our own country.

Next are the lawyers of the United States. They are leeches living of the fat of the land. Sooner or later there will be no more services available because of all the stupid lawsuits.

Next are the stupid asinine judges legislating from the bench instead of just administering the law.

Next are the stupid asinine college professors who teach in our higher education institutions. The garbage they spew out of their mouths is absolutely obscene. They need to be fired.

Next are the stupid unions who expect all of America to support their ass. One great example is the steel industry. They extracted lucrative agreements from the steel industry which have all but bankrupted the steel companies which cannot now live up to the agreements and are not able to pay for their benefits. Now they are asking the American people to take over those obligations. I say bullshit to that.

Last but not least is the biased left leaning media, that includes most of the major newspapers too. Dan Rather, Tom Brokaw, and Peter Jennings are a disgrace to journalism. They don't even pretend to hide their agenda anymore. How can anyone be so stupid is beyond me. Even an un eddicated fool like me can see thru their transparency.

If you agree with me let me know, if you don't I hope you will be the first to be beheaded if we lose this war!

GravatarDammitDee

You've got a really winning way about you, Dee. You'd seem to have already lost your head. A proctologist might be of some help finding it.

GravatarJimmy James,

nice list of names -- people like coulter, limbaugh and malkin would call all of them traitors for being too liberal

GravatarThe Lorax

George Bush is definitely the Zaxs' favorite. Either North or South going Zax. His policy is essentially the same as theirs.

GravatarWell. I thought the premise behind Wrangel's draft was that EVERYONE SHOULD BE DRAFTED, ESPECIALLY YOUNG WHITE PEOPLE, AND NOT JUST BROWNPEOPLECANNONFODDER. That is the point isn't it? Let me know if I'm wrong, but I saw Wrangel on Crossfire, and this was his explanation, that too many times, in too many of the present wars since Vietnam, poor black people were shoved to the front lines with no one to get them out, such as bush's daddy. Take this current war; look all around you at the students in colleges, mostly white, and mostly not minorities. Who's first to up for the services? Those without a job, those who need help with college costs, or those who might be looking for some skills, AND THOSE LOOKING FOR A WAY OUT OF THE GHETTO AND BLIGHTED NEIGHBORHOODS WITH NOWHERE TO GO. This was the point Wrangel was trying to make. When and if the draft comes, they will insert some form of service agreement by which white kids will escape going to war. There will be no escape for the brown kids who have nowhere to go, nowhere to run, nowhere to hide. They will feel the need to go to war to get a job. Now. Isn't that ugly? Now, oddly enough, the middle class kids are feeling the need to go too, but mainly because their parents are being squeezed with the inability to now send their kids to college because bush is squeezing them! Sooooo, don't lose what the point of the draft or not having one is really all about; Charles Wrangel pushed it because he knows who will be sent to war, and who will escape once again.

Peace
Jazzy

GravatarKeep an eye toward the TV tomorrow for Michael Moore's new ads. He just previewed them in Columbus & they are deadly.

GravatarHere in Colorado one of our MANY CC stations, KHOW 630 AM, will carry Faux coverage Tuesday. How in the hell does that happen? I live on the edge of the real South Park and those bastards want to kill Kerry!

Gravatar( Please join me and vote for President Bush on November 2nd.

Sincerely,
Concerned Grandma)

Every concerned Republican knows there was a typo in the original article. It should read "Democrats want to draft anyone under 72!" So, grab your gunny sack, Granny!

GravatarJazzylady50,

You've got it pretty well down, Jazzy.

It was, in fact, a gambit that Charlie and a few others were throwing at Bush at the start of Bush's agression.

Yes, they wanted Bush to know that if he was going to push this very far, that they would make damned sure that EVERYBODY went, knowing all the rich mommies and daddies wouldn't stand for their precious coming home with no limbs or, omygod! stains on their clothing. That would effectively tie Bush's hands.

Its point clearly made, it was immediately tossed into committee, never to be seen again.
But after Kerry's attacks on the draft, DeLay and Hastert dragged it back up to use as something to VOTE DOWN (which they did) and have the American parent think (erroneously) that their baby is now safe and protected, and that Repubs actually do like them.

Fat chance.

So, it was a Gumby bill, used by both sides, as they wanted.

Also, Jazzy, please go easy on the "(W)Rangel" nonsense. Charlie is my congressman, and we're proud of him. Plus, he has more cojones than the entire Republican Party.
