No, see, being reminded how dangerous the world is shows how much we should stay the course and not switch horses mid-Apocalypse, and appreciate resolute, brave, non-flip-flopping-esque leadership and stuff. Remember, another 9/11 could happen if we don't change policies, and the only way to change policies is to keep the same Preznit. Because Kerry would just be more of the same, whilst Bush promises to change the tone in Washington.

Apparently, from atrios' constant posts all day today about this theme, the media is playing their assigned and expected role with with this Bin Laden tape by giving great voice to GOP spin and talking points.
On the other hand, the Kerry camp (or their minions) could stop all this immediately by trying to spin it around against Bush:
1. This latest tape just confirms that Bush attacked the wrong enemy. Instead of going after Osama, he took a detour and went after Saddam. Thus, Osama is still alive and looks as rested and as unrepentant as ever.
2. This Administration has failed in its stated mission to avenge the deaths of those killed on 9-11 and to make our country safer. Osama is still alive and looks as rested and as unrepentent as ever.
3. If the failure regarding the capture of Osama, coupled with the failure to secure the looted 380 tons of explosives shoudl come together--that is, if Osama's network should somehow get a hold of them--we are inasmuch danger as ever.
4. Bush's failures have not mades us safer, but have jeapardized and continue to jeapardize our security.
It's clear to me that this is the "winning" strategy. But why won't the Kerry people do it?

It's spin from the Bush surrogates, pure and simple. They are scared shitless over what this tape means -- a reminder that OBL still alive, etc. -- and they can't be silent about it, so this is the spin. Meanwhile, Bush keeps quiet about it. Kerry ought to be hammering this hard.

Look, we all know that from a substantive and thinking person's point of view, this latest OBL tape makes Bush look bad.
The problem is that the way the GOP talking points and the "Mighty Wurlizter" of their allies work, and the way they consistently spin things, they just keep repeating something over and over again until it embeds itself inside the consciousness of people and people find themselves agreeing with it.
It seems to me, that is exactly what is going on now in the media.
And so, again, I ask: What is the Kerry campaign ACTIVELY doing to counter this strategy, which in the past, has proven so highly effective?

Facts mean nothing to these people. Argument/reasoning is utterly pointless. They really don't give a rat's ass about the truth, nor do they seem to give a fuck about the security of the country, or the fact that they are killing their fellow human beings in direct contradiction to the teachings of their supposed idol, Jesus. They seem to love scary bombs and machinery that kills and costs a lot. Doing the tedious work of guarding ports, getting flak jackets to the troops, vaccinating the world's poor, taking care of the mentally ill and elderly is utter horseshit to them. Oil rigs, tankers, SUBMARINES TO USE IN THE DESERT, that's the stuff!!!
No matter that none of that machinery has flushed Osama out dead or alive.

Why are Democrats, through their own inaction and/or timidity, always complicit in their own defeat?
Why doesn't that battered wife just tell her husband to stop after calling the police, the neighbors and her family didn't do anything?
A short note on the race, the polls, and what the Bush camp is calling bin Laden's "little gift."
The next few days phone polling probably amounts to one of the biggest industries in the United States.
So it's interesting to look at the results of last night's post-gift polling.
First the four tracking polls released today and thus including roughly one-third of calls after the release of the OBL tape.
In Zogby's, Kerry moved up one point.
In Rasmussen's, Kerry moved up one point.
In WaPo/ABC, Kerry moved up two points.
In Tipp, Bush moved up two points.
Two other national polls were released (at least that I've seen), Newsweek and Fox.
One third of the Newsweek poll was done last night. And in their poll Bush was up over Kerry by 50% to 44%. That's four points better than the Newsweek poll the previous week that had Bush over Kerry 48% to 46%.
Look, though, at the Fox poll.
Fox did a poll Wednesday and Thursday night. And then they did another poll with calls Thursday and Friday night. So the common denominator is that both polls had calls Thursday night. And half the calls in the second poll were done post-gift.
The first Fox poll had Bush up 5% (50% to 45%) and the second had him up 2% (47% to 45%).
Now, does this mean the bin Laden tape is giving a boost to Kerry? Of course, not. These are tiny changes. And it's altogether possible that this small shift is simply the result of statistical 'noise' -- numbers wobbling around within the polls' margins of error.
But it should put at least some damper on the notion that the release of the OBL tape would lead to some sudden Bush surge.
At least if the pundits are listening.
That site's just dog slow. Those ads are bandwidth killers...yuck.

Listen Tena, you uninformed bitch,
The story about "Black Box" Voting broke here on the Internet about two years ago, and activists have been makding a big deal about it for the past two years.
In spite of this, the call for a paper trail is still being resisted in many states, and many Democrats have only just NOW begun to wake up to the issue. Moreover, even though some places have passed legislation making paper trails mandatory, the fact is that this will not take effect until 2006.
So, I go back to my original point: These machines should have ALREADY had paper trails on them. And the fact is they don't. And many of us on the Internet have been aware of this and have been screaming about it for A LONG TIME. Nonetheless, the situation persists.
So, don't give me your shit, your uninformed Johnny-come-lately. 'Cause you don't know what HELL you are talking about.

Osama: In your upcoming election, you will have the choice between two men - George W. Bush and John Kerry. One of these candidates will lead to more terrorist attacks, even larger than 9/11. In my video, I tell you about how your current president, George W. Bush, totally botched any attempt to stop 9/11, and actually gave us way more time to execute it than we ever imagined we’d have. Because of my anti-Bush statements, some people (FOX News, especially) have called this tape my endorsement of John Kerry. But I never said that.
Vazzini: Hmm.
O: All right: which candidate is the poison? The battle of wits has begun. It ends when you vote, and find out if you chose right, or if you are dead.
V: But it’s so simple. All I have to do is divine from what I know of you. Are you the sort of man who would endorse the candidate he actually wants to win, or endorse his enemy? [Vizzini pauses to study Osama] Now, a clever man would endorse his own candidate, because he would know that only a great fool would vote for who he was told. I’m not a great fool, so I can clearly not for the candidate you endorse. But you must have known I was not a great fool; you would have counted on it, so I can clearly not vote for the candidate you insult.
O: You’ve made your decision then?
V: Not remotely. Because you are a from Saudi Arabia, as everyone knows. And Saudi Arabia is entirely peopled with criminals. And criminals are used to having people not trust them, as you are not trusted by me. So I can clearly not vote for the candidate you endorse.
O: Truly, you have a dizzying intellect.
V: Wait till I get going! Where was I?
O: Saudi Arabia.
V: Yes – Saudi Arabia, and you must have suspected I would have known your origin, so I can clearly not vote for the candidate you claim to oppose!
O: You’re just stalling now.
V: You’d like to think that, wouldn’t you? You’ve beaten my towers, which means you’re exceptionally strong. So, you could have endorsed the candidate you don’t want, trusting on your strength to save you. So I can clearly not vote for the candidate you say you like. But, you’ve also bested the FBI and CIA, which means you must have studied. And in studying, you must have learned that man is mortal so you would have put the person you don’t want as far from yourself as possible, so I can clearly not vote for the person who you say you don’t want!
O: You’re trying to trick me into giving away something – it won’t work –
V: It has worked – you’ve given everything away – I know which candidate to vote for!
O: Then make your choice.
V: I will. And I choose [stops suddenly and points at something behind Osama] what in the world can that be?
O: [Turns, looks] What? Where? I don’t see anything.
[Vizzini quickly switches the ballots while Osama has his head turned.]
V: Oh, well, I-I could have sworn I saw something. No matter.
[Osama turns to face him again. Vizzini starts to laugh.]
Yeah, that's just about got the situation pegged right there.

V: I’ll tell you in a minute. First, I’ll vote - for the candidate you endorse.

O: You guessed wrong.
V: [roaring with laughter] You only think I guessed wrong… [louder now] …that’s what’s so funny! I switched ballots when your back was turned. You fool.
[Osama sits silently.]
V: You fell victim to one of the classic blunders. The most famous is “Never get involved in a land war in Iraq.” But only slightly less well known is this: “Never go in against an American when death is on the line.”
[Vizzini roars with laughter, and falls over dead]

REPUBLICANs ARE AFRAID OF THE BIN LADEN TAPE...
FROM NY TIMES:
"But for every measure of hope there is some measure of anxiety gnawing at the adoring crowds that are shadowing the president the last days of his re-election campaign.
"I haven't talked to anybody who is not concerned," said Mr. Nichols, who took a day's vacation on Thursday to see the president at a hockey rink in Saginaw. "I think it is closer than it should be."
The videotaped message by Osama bin Laden on Friday served to heighten the uneasiness.
Linda Bentley, a real estate agent who attended a Bush rally on Saturday in Grand Rapids, Mich., said she was infuriated by Mr. bin Laden's interjection into the campaign. She was also a bit worried about it.
"He is trying to make the president look incompetent," Ms. Bentley said. "I just hope people will realize that he is trying to influence our democracy and our election."
First the 4 tracking polls released today and thus including roughly one-third of calls after the release of the OBL tape.
In Zogby's, Kerry moved up one point.
In Rasmussen's, Kerry moved up one point.
In WaPo/ABC, Kerry moved up two points.

Listen carefully Ann Coulter, Rush Limbaugh, and Bill O’Reilly:
A TRAITOR is not someone who hates America.
A TRAITOR is someone who causes others to hate America.
The Republican Party’s mismanagement of the economy has hurt many, many people. But there is one thing that the Republicans under George Bush have done that is politically unforgivable in America. They have profoundly damaged our reputation around the world.
Right after Nine Eleven, Americans were viewed with great affection and sympathy everywhere on the planet. Now, an unprecedented amount of hatred is being expressed for America, not just by a few lunatic radicals, but by nations that had always seen us as friends, previously. How did it happen? It’s simple, really. People hate that which they fear.
In his tenure as President, George Bush has managed to cause people all over the world---who once respected and admired America---to fear us. When President Bush told the world that America couldn’t wait for the weapons inspectors to find WMD, that he was sending our army into Iraq whether the rest of the world approved or not, it scared them to death.
Over many decades, America had enhanced its reputation in the world by being kind and generous and by showing that we were a thoughtful participant in the world community. Other nations were reassured by the fact that we always seemed quite reluctant to go to war. They did not fear such a nation.
Under the leadership of George W. Bush, that has changed dramatically. Now the world can’t stop thinking about Abu Ghraib and George Bush’s phony justifications for invading a country that was not an immediate threat to us.
George Bush had his chance to do things in our name that would make us feel proud to be Americans. We now know that he is clueless. He may sincerely want to protect America in his own blundering way, but we can’t afford any more of his mind-boggling incompetence.
If you have not joined the George Bush Cult and want to see America respected and admired in the world again, vote for John Kerry on November 2nd. Do it to save America’s reputation.

William Gibson weighs in on the OBL tape:
"Saturday, October 30, 2004
posted 9:58 AM
After sleeping on it, I find I'm not quite as inclined to imagine that OBL's tape was a conscious effort to swing the election for Bush. It doesn't seem to me that he understands us quite that well, and it doesn't seem to me that I understand him well enough to be that certain of what he's up to. I think the message might actually have been: "Hi. 9-11 was all my idea. And you haven't been able to catch me, so I'll do it all over again if I decide to. I know you're having an election now, but that won't make any difference either way. In order to make a difference, you'll have to get your government to stop doing the things they're doing that keep me wanting to attack you again. 'Bye."
It gets harder, the more I think about it, to see that causing many of the remaining pool of undecided US voters to go Bush. I think OBL needed a logo moment, though, in terms of the ongoing validity of his global brand, and look what he's been able to pull off, with virtually no outlay: The world's full attention, as both candidates drop everything to respond.
You know who would've completely gotten OBL? Andy Warhol.
(After comparing it to the original Arabic, a friend recommends the Al-Jazeera translation of OBL's message as more accurate than the Reuters/NYT version.)"

The truth is, there is no way that tape is going to help Bush. It is the coup de grace to weeks of bad news and reminders of what a truly bad president bush is.
Bush's whole campaign is built on the theme that he is tougher and will protect us better, much better than Kerry.
If that's true, then what in the heck is that OBL guy doing on our TV sets 3 years after 911!?!?!?
OBL is alive and free, threatening us on TV, mocking our President and making demands directly to us, the American people. Where's Bush? Out campaigning for re-election.
Iraq, meanwhile, is in the toilet. Our kids are still getting their heads blown off (8 today alone) 16 months after Bush declared victory. It is a bloody mess over there, and it's only going to get worse.
The tape undermines Bush's central argument for re-election while strengthing Kerry's.
Ultimately, 4 more years of Bush is more frightening than that tape of OBL, especially when you consider that Bush let OBL get away once already.

Mr Kroeger,
Good post. I found it very interesting that The Economist (British magazine, center to Right in point of view)has reluctantly endorsed John Kerry and called Bush an Incompetent. This was not because of the incompetence he has showed in his mismanagement of economic matters (which is beyond dispute), but the incompetence of the Administrations shipping of war prisoners from Afghanistan to Guantanimo and the Administration approved torture of prisoners in Iraq at Abu Gahrib. In the eyes of the world at its most objective state, there is absolutely nothing worse than Bush’s betrayal of our American reputation for honesty and justice that was demonstrated in those two shameful incidents. For those, I would support the prosecution of Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld and Colin Powell in the World Court in The Hague. They are absolutely Class A international felons and traitors to the United States.

My take is that both sides are nervous about the OBL tape -- there's just no clear "winner." Gloating on either side looks really bad for reasons stated in this thread. So far, the repubs are ahead of that game which I think is a loser.
As I posted in an earlier thread, Concerned Citizens for a Safer America will be running national spots on Wolf Blitzer, Lou Dobbs, Paula Zahn and Larry King Live. The visual features Bush reading "My Pet Goat" in front of the school children.
Audio is a quote from Martin Luther King: "The ulitmate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy."
Keep an eye out for these. These spots were produced and booked before the OBL tape was even known about. I think they'll be powerful given the context of current events.

Ay ay ay. I don't think it is helpful for people to expend energy on personal animosity. I call for mutual civility. Everybody who called anybody else a name should say sorry and stop, except of course for calling GWB Chimpy and other understandable insults to people who aren't around personally but are rather abstract targets of our justifiable wrath. Come to think of it, if GWB was participating personally I'd still call him chimpy and much worse names than that. But tena and jeremiah should just be addressed by their chosen names/handles.
Whoof. I note that the bodies in Iraq are piling up like cordwood, it has been another horrible day there and since that's now routine, it's largely ignored. Marines killed in a large group. Our well trained, disciplined Iraqi allies moving in and spraying the local civilians with 50 caliber machine gun fire and making a nice stack of innocent bystanders. Hostages killed, various people and their stuff blown up by U.S. warplanes, kids dying of diarrhea, women kidnapped and raped, all of this for the greater glory of our world straddling emperor primate. Let's focus our wrath where it belongs.

Terry C, Spinoza - ahem. If you would like in-depth information concerning influenza and the Great War, may I suggest consulting the Great War Primary Document Archives, and particularly, the Medical section.
Terry C- I read the book earlier this year. It's a little scary that the influenze began in (iirc) a Kansas army camp. And it was labeled the Spanish influenza because countries including the US censored the news of it xcpt for Spain. So that was where people first heard about it.
I was always curious about where the names for most of the streets in my hometown came from.
It turns out that about half were named after victims of the 1918 epidemic.

Old Hat,
I don't know if you realize it, but with your last post to me, and with your "battered wife" analagy of earlier, you are essentially saying that the poor Democrats are just too weak and helpless in the face of all that Republican power.
I don't buy it. If they are week and helpless, it is because they have bought into that role.
There was a time in this country when the left knew how to fight. The labor victories of the past didn't happen because labor leaders just sat back and said, "Well, we're just too weak to strike for a 40-hour work weak. Those big, bad employers will hire Pinkerton men to come and bust our heads."
No. They fought back. And they fought back HARD. They organized their own goon squads.
Now, we have a "seasonsed D.C. insider pro" like yourself lecturing me on the niceties of parliamentary procedure?
Yeah. Newt Ginrich sure relied on that "parliamentary procedure" in getting his "Contract with America" passed, didn't he? And how was he rewarded by refusing to just defer to his parliamentary minority position in the House? He got control of the House of Representatives in '94.
What the hell is wrong with you?

So that if I respond in kind to a woman calling me a "fuckstain," I supposedly have problems with women?
Sweetheart, some of us haven't forgotten your tirade last summer when you explained how you LOVE to use words like "bitch" and "cunt" against women because it's supposed to send us running with our tails between our legs or something. Let's see, at that point you were railing against pro-choice women here, because you're anti-abortion -- I believe that was the context.
And let's DO try to be logical here, you called Tena a bitch before she called you a fuckstain. But the point is, you've got a history. You've already crapped in your bed here -- now you have to lie in it.

No, you completely misunderstood me. If someone is getting screwed (i.e. the Democratic party) do you get angry at the target of said screwing, or do you get angry at who's doing the screwing (i.e. the GOP). Logic states attack the GOP and Tom Delay's robots, not the Democratic party for not "fighting back" hard enough.
This isn't some boxing match on TV where you're passive observer and the Democratic party isn't some nebulous entity in the ether. You're responsible. I'm responsible. And the most irresponsible thing to do in the world in a situation like this is to browbeat and try and shame other people for not "doing" enough. It's called blaming the victim. And in this case the victim isn't the nebulous Democratic party in the ether, it's poor minority voters. Real people in other words.
So hit the GOP, not the Democratic party. Fight them. Fuck them.

Jeremiah Elias says " Democrats don't know how to FIGHT or go on the offensive."
Sure they do JE - MoveOn and ACT have been out there pounding on Bush mercilessly for a year - but the majority of Americans simply DISAGREE with them. Like Zell says, they have put partinship and power politics ahead of national security, and are suffering defeats because of it.
James J. Kroeger says "Now the world can’t stop thinking about Abu Ghraib"
You mean the world's loony left MEDIA can't stop chewing that rag - I think the rest of us are pretty much over it. I'm much more concerned about wiping out Wahhabism myself.
JK says " George Bush had his chance to do things in our name that would make us feel proud to be Americans."
Hey - I was already proud to be an American - and who gives a rat's rectum what Jacque Chirac thinks? OBL doesn't. I don't either. But George has done surprisingly well hasn't he?
Believe it or not, this is World War III, people. Kerry simply isn't serious about it - and that's the reason why any reminders by OBL help Bush. McCain's not a sellout, he simply understands the reality of it all. There's a WAR going on - we didn't start it - but we need to finish it.
Get ready, boys, 'cause it's a BUSH LANDSLIDE in two more days! Then Ol' George can keep right on kicking some terrorist butt - just like we want him to.

--Uuummm, let me see. During the run up to the war in Iraq, starting in September of 2002, I knew the reasons that Bush was giving for attacking Saddam were lies. Thus, I took to the streets and demonstrated. I contacted every Democratic politican I could think of. I e-mailed the DNC. I wrote letters to the editors of newspapers, and contacted the United Nations Security Council delegations, and I did all this consistently voicing the following message:
1. WMD are a lie.
2. Bush wants Iraq for the oil.
3. Don't give Bush authority to go to war in Iraq.
What did so many of the prominent Democrats in Congress do (including Kerry and Edwards and Clinton and Daschle and Gephardt) in response to the impassioned and persistent message of me and thousands of people like me? Instead of questioning Bush, they voted to give Bush the authority to go to war.
So, knock off the lectures about how things work in the Democratic Party and my supposed inability to fulfill my responsibilities.

The US Justice Department has reportedly not released a final chapter of the September 11 commission's report related to conflicting accounts of efforts to track and chase the jets hijacked that day, and is unlikely to do so before Tuesday's presidential vote.
Meeting a pre-election deadline for release of the full report had been a top commission priority, The New York Times report stressed.
"Drawing from this unpublished part of the inquiry, the commission quietly asked the inspectors general at the Departments of Defense and Transportation to review what it had determined were broadly inaccurate accounts provided by several civil and military officials about efforts to track and chase the hijacked aircraft on September 11," the newspaper said.
"In testimony before the commission, officials had described a quick response to the hijackings that narrowly missed intercepting some of the planes, but the commission's investigators later determined from documentary evidence that none of the military planes were anywhere near the four airliners," the report added.
"Officials at the Federal Aviation Administration testified that they had notified the military within a few minutes of each hijacking, but the investigation found that tape recordings contradicted that assertion," it noted.
The paper quoted David Barnes, a spokesman with the Department of Transportation, as saying that if the reviews found wrongdoing, the inspector general could recommend administrative penalties or ask federal prosecutors to begin a criminal probe...
I can wait... tomorrow, a month from now, ten years from now... but the truth will come out, and I will live to see every moronic brownshirt fuck responsible for the events that day hung by their balls.
Then we start on the collaborators...

Jeremiah,
How can you say that I am "way our of my depth" and that I am ignorant. From what you have posted today I've seen nothing of what you have listed. I don't think in any way I am out of my league here. What Howard Dean did for the party was terrific. He energized the base when it was needed. He has since devoted his time in campaigning for Kerry and Democratic candidates for Congress. The Democrats have been fighting and will continue to do so. In no way did I intend to offend you, but you can't simply call someone a bitch because they disagree with your position. Let's keep the discourse at a higher level. I will end with this; I think you are a little angry and need to get a hold of your emotions. It does no one any good to let emotion overrun common sense.

Fund-raising group milks vulnerable senior citizens
The College Republican National Committee has raised $6.3 million this year through an aggressive and misleading fund-raising campaign that collected money from senior citizens who thought they were giving to the election efforts of President Bush and other top Republicans.
Many of the top donors were in their 80s and 90s. The donors wrote checks — sometimes hundreds and, in at least one case, totaling more than $100,000 — to groups with official sounding-names such as "Republican Headquarters 2004," "Republican Elections Committee" and the "National Republican Campaign Fund."
But all of those groups, according to the small print on the letters, were simply projects of the College Republicans, who collected all of the checks.
And little of the money went to election efforts.
Of the money spent by the group this year, nearly 90 percent went to direct-mail vendors and postage expenses, according to records filed with the Internal Revenue Service.
Some of the elderly donors, meanwhile, wound up bouncing checks and emptying their bank accounts.
"I don't have any more money," said Cecilia Barbier, a 90-year-old retired church council worker in New York City. "I'm stopping giving to everybody. That was all my savings that they got.
College Republicans serve as the party's outreach organization on college campuses. The group has been a starting place for many prominent conservatives, including Bush adviser Karl Rove, anti-tax activist Grover Norquist and former Christian Coalition executive director Ralph Reed.

FAA Destroyed Sept. 11 Air-Traffic-Control Tapes
Friday, May 07, 2004
WASHINGTON — Air traffic controllers who handled two of the hijacked flights on Sept. 11, 2001, recorded their experiences shortly after the planes crashed into the World Trade Center but a supervisor destroyed the tape, government investigators said Thursday.
A report by Transportation Department Inspector General Kenneth Mead (search) said the manager for the New York-area air traffic control center asked the controllers to make the recordings a few hours after the crashes in belief they would be important for law enforcement.
Investigators never heard it. Sometime between December 2001 and February 2002, an unidentified Federal Aviation Administration (search) quality assurance manager crushed the cassette case in his hand, cut the tape into small pieces and threw them away in multiple trash cans, the report said.
"We were told that nobody ever listened to, transcribed or duplicated the tape," Mead said in the report sent to Sen. John McCain (search). The Arizona Republican asked the inspector general to look into how well the agency was cooperating with the independent panel investigating the attacks.
Neither manager told anyone outside the center — including their superiors and law enforcement officials — about the tape's existence, the report said. The Sept. 11 commission learned of the tape during interviews with New York air traffic control center personnel between September and October.
The destruction occurred even though the FAA sent a directive three days after the hijackings: "Retain and secure until further notice ALL Administrative/Operational data and records. ... If a question arises whether or not you should retain the data, RETAIN IT."
The quality assurance manager said he destroyed the tape because he felt it violated FAA policy calling for written statements from controllers who have handled a plane involved in an accident or other serious incident. He also said he felt the controllers were not in the right frame of mind to have consented to the taping, the report said.
The manager said he waited several months to destroy the tape because he promised the local controllers' union vice president that he would get rid of it once the control center's formal accident package was complete, the report said. That package was sent to FAA headquarters in November 2001.
The report did not characterize the tape's destruction as an attempted cover-up. But it said the recording could have helped provide a fuller explanation of what happened on Sept. 11.

"What those six controllers recounted in a group setting on Sept. 11, in their own voices, about what transpired that morning, are no longer available to assist any investigation or inform the public," the report said.
Mead said his office referred the case to federal prosecutors in New York, but they declined to prosecute because of lack of criminal intent.
FAA spokesman Greg Martin said the quality control manager was disciplined for violating the directive to keep everything relating to the hijackings and to turn them over to investigators. He said privacy considerations prevented him from disclosing how the manager was disciplined.
Martin said the FAA believes the tape is consistent with written statements and other materials provided to investigators. It "would not have added in any significant way to the information already provided to investigators and members of the 9-11 commission," Martin said.
The report said the controllers who made the tape had either talked to the hijacked planes that crashed into the World Trade Center (search) or were working radar positions that intersected with the jetliners' flight paths.
The report concluded that there was "some measure of consistency" between witness statements later taken from the controllers and what was recorded on the tape.
That conclusion was based on interviews with the six controllers and all 10 witnesses to the taping, and on sketchy notes taken during the tape recording. Also retained were radar data and recordings of radio transmissions from the cockpit.
John Carr, president of the air traffic controllers' union, said he did not know whether the manager did the right thing by destroying the tape.
"It was a traumatic time for him," he said. "He was the custodian for the darkest moment in our nation's history."

Even though I live in Mass, I cannot

It seems to me that everyone is missing the point. OBL is releasing his own 9-11 report. You know, the part we weren't supposed to see until after the election, that assigns responsibility.
"And for the record, we had agreed with the Commander-General Muhammad Ataa, Allah have mercy on him, that all the operations should be carried out within 20 minutes before Bush and his administration notice.
It never occurred to us that the Commander in Chief of the armed forces would abandon 50,000 of his citizens in the twin towers to face those great horrors alone at a time when they most needed him.
But because it seemed to him that occupying himself by talking to the little girl about the goat and its butting was more important than occupying himself with the planes and their butting of the skyscrapers we were given three times the period required to execute the operations. All praise is due to Allah."

halloween story-Yesterday I was the class mom at my sons pre-school. I dressed up as a pumpkin. I overstuffed my custume so much that I could hardly sit or fit between the steering wheel and the front of the drivers seat. I got pulled over by a cop for a rolling stop instead of a complete stop at the stop sign. Embarrassed as hell and my face color matching my outfit. I nervously waited for the officer to come to my car. When he got a good look at me-I swear he laughed his ass off. He was laughing so hard that he couldn't even compose a sentence. He finally said, Lady, this is the first time I ever pulled over a pumpkin-you made my day-continuing to laugh he walked away to his car and drove off-never giving me the ticket.

From Olbermann:
By definition, the logical fallacy, of course is simply this: Event A occurs. Then Event B occurs. Therefore, Event A caused Event B. Obviously, it’s simply not true. Nonetheless, when the presidential election is this close, we look for anything and everything that might predict the outcome— whether common-sense or logically fallacious.
And as logical fallacies go, we are privileged to have a doozy, one that seems to have correctly predicted the last seventeen Presidential Elections.

Sinclair stations to air swiftvet special (In Battleground States Tomorrow!)

A 30-minute television special featuring Swift Boat Veterans and POWs for Truth, the group challenging Sen. John Kerry's version of his war record and his anti-war activities, is airing in 16 markets in eight battleground states, according to a non-profit Florida group buying the broadcast time.
Campaign Truth, responsible for producing the show, has added Fox network stations in the Ohio cities of Dayton and Columbus, owned by Sinclair Broadcast Group, the television chain at the center of controversy over the airing of another anti-Kerry documentary, "Stolen Honor."
The broadcasts will begin sometime after Fox's Sunday NFL preview show, Campaign Truth said.
The special, "Unfit to Lead," also is being aired on PAX network affilates in Cleveland and in seven other states, including Florida, where it will be seen in five major markets, Orlando, Jacksonville, Tampa, Miami and West Palm Beach.
In addition, it is scheduled in Denver; Minneapolis-St. Paul; Cleveland; Milwaukee; Des Moines, Iowa; Cedar Rapids, Iowa; Scranton, Pa.; and Charleston, W.Va.
The show, hosted by swiftboat vet spokesman John O'Neill, also is available exclusively to WorldNetDaily readers online for a limited time.
It features many of the men whose testimonies about Kerry were heard in the controversial advertisements played in key swing states over the past several months.
Times are listed below.
The broadcasts in Florida and Cleveland are being promoted with newspaper ads.
In the special, one of Kerry's former superior officers, Capt. George Elliott, says he believes Kerry should have been removed from command.
Elliott was commander of Coastal Division 11, where Kerry spent his four months of active duty in Vietnam.
"If I knew then what I know now, he would have been thrown out of my command and probably recommended for removal from the Navy," Elliott says of Kerry.
Stations airing "Unfit to Lead":

NYMary- I tend to think that when someone at the FAA not only destroys recorded eyewitness testimony to perhaps the biggest fuckup - I mean, darkest moment - in FAA history but chops the tape into little pieces and then distributes the pieces in various trash cans around the building to try to eliminate the possibility they could ever be reconstructed, there is quite possibly more going on than being overwhelmed by emotion.
But I'm probably just being too distrustful. What are the odds people would choose to cover their own asses rather than reveal a truth in which they look incompetent? I mean, when national security is at stake, surely that trumps self-interest, right?

is Bin Laden offering a truce? it seems clear to me that he is trying to say that 911 was a retaliation, and that now the stakes are even, and should we continue to seek him out and kill his people we wil again be the transgressors. thank god all the politicians are being stern and threatening, he's clearly susceptible to threats...
maybe someone should think about Kerry's "sensitive" war on terror, to admit that a war fought without a psychological aspect is a war lost.

stinky feet, Old Hat - much as I'd like to take credit for the "common clay" part of the comment, that was from Mel Brook's masterpiece.
Jeremiah - please don't perceive this as "jumping on." I appreciate that both you and Tena and many folks in here have given great efforts for the progressive cause.
Keep in mind that no matter how loud we rail and shout at past injustices and mistakes, they are still past. The best thing Accounting 301 teaches is that "past expenditures" aren't a factor in selecting the best course of action for the future.
Many of us were Dean supporters. It's past. We have to take things from the present and build for the best possible future given where we are now.
Let's get together and avert the "circular firing squad" syndrome, mmkay?

John Kerry, born on Dec. 11, 1943, is a Sagittarius with four Gemini planets in the public relationship sector of his birth chart. He has a judicial character, but also has little tolerance for fools. Born with the rare Mars retrograde, he entered life with a rage — a deep, inner need to overcome (the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. also had the Mars retrograde). He has a strong sense of responsibility as well as feelings of caution about his message. Over the last 18 months the planets have empowered him with core strength. The long-term picture depicts him achieving his highest goals.
I've listened for months to your speculation that capturing Osama Bin Laden would prove a huge boost for the President. So I'm a little confused that you now suggest the failure to capture Bin Laden boosts George Bush. It's a circular logic that seems lifted from Republican talking points. I hold you to a higher standard.
Like most voters, Friday's videotape only served to remind me that we have failed to bring Bin Laden to justice, that this barbarian can run and can hide. It is an embarrassing testament to the failure of President Bush.
Why haven't we captured Bin Laden? Why is this madman still on the loose three years after the President declared him "wanted: dead or alive?" And why on earth are top Republican strategists calling this tape, Bin Laden's "Little Gift" to Bush?
Eight of our Marines were killed today. Did their heroic sacrifice bring us any closer to capturing Bin Laden or disrupting Al Qaeda? I hope, as a responsible journalist, you're prepared to address these questions. I have my answer: a vote for John Kerry.
Sincerely,
Christopher Greco

Martin Luther King
Abraham Lincoln
Thomas Jefferson
Benjamin Franklin
Thomas Paine

Eleanor Roosevelt

Nelson Mandela

We are on track for historic turnout in this election. Voters are coming out in record numbers for John Kerry.
And that has the Republicans scared. They have no plan, no hope, no way to win this election except to stop people from voting. Their strategy is simple:
1.Discourage Democratic voters from going to the polls by filling the airwaves with predictions of doom and gloom.
2.Delay voting and create lines at polls by challenging voters and election officials.
3.Deny voters the opportunity to cast their votes and have them counted.
But their strategy won't work. We will stop their attempts to deny our rights by using the best weapons in our arsenal: information and education.
It's vital that you know your voting rights. Take a minute today to make sure that others know their rights, too. Download our guide to voting rights:

Top Three Casualties from this campaign -- meaning -- their future ambitions are pretty much done:
1>. Guiliani - jumped the shark over his blaming the troops about the missing weapons in iraq. Sorry, Rudi, just because your city got hit on 9/11, it doesn't mean you're a terrorism expert.
2>. McCain - the bear hug with the sweaty Dubya killed you in 2008; when the great inquisition is over in the rethug party after this election, you, too, will be thrown into the pit of sacrifice. Get some friends in AEI, because your run for preznut is on life suppot at best.
3>. O'Neill - if there ever was a reason to bring back tar and feathering, this is the guy at the top of the list - karma catches up quick to smear fiends. Atwater was lucky because he died before the day of extreme atonement - the same will not happen for O'Neill, unless someone injects an airbubble in his aorta real soon.

Monica A,
Do you know what you are talking about? I didn't call someone a "bitch" because she disagreed with my position. I called her a "bitch" because she FIRST insulted me by called me a "fuckstain," and she did so only because she disagreed with my opinion.
As for saying that you are "out of your depth" this is what I meant: You accused me of all sorts of things that are simply not true. You don't know me. You don't know what I have or haven't done politically during the past three years. You ASSUMED that I haven't done a whole lot of things, and then called me a "Monday Morning Quarterback." You're out of your depth because you don't know what you are talking about when it comes to accusing me of this crap. And instead of coming back and apologizing for your inaccurate characterizations of and assumptions about me, once I corrected you, you came back and began to lecture me on Howard Dean. Talk about (conveniently) going off on a tangent once you've been confronted . . . .
As for you, Old Hat, I'm not putting on any working man 'act' as you so condescendingly put it. I never claimed to be any such thing, and for you to come to that understanding from what I posted shows me how truly obtuse (purposely?) you are in that you missed the main point of what I was saying. (And I won't even beging to pretend that I understand what the Trust Fund comment was supposed to be about, other than, perhaps YOU YOURSELF come from that socio-economic strata of society and are projecting your own privileged background on to me.)
I suspect you are like all the young and arrogant sycophants to power that I've met in law school and right out of law school, who go to D.C. with stars in their eyes, kind of like hopeful starlets go to Hollywood thinking they're gonna be stars someday. Actually, I think it is YOU who is the out of touch elitist . . . . kind of like Hecate. (And boy, I've known too many "Democratic" D.C. lawyer types in my day. They make me want to puke. They're the ones who for the sake of their cocktail parties, and the way they get their jollies out of living in D.C. and rubbing elbows with the rich and powerful, consistenly sell out the rank and file members of the Democratic Party. They're the ones who turn into the James Carvilles and Paul Begalas and John Kerrys of the Democratic Party.)
And as for you Silly, you said:
"Sweetheart, some of us haven't forgotten your tirade last summer when you explained how you LOVE to use words like "bitch" and "cunt" against women because it's supposed to send us running with our tails between our legs or something. Let's see, at that point you were railing against pro-choice women here, because you're anti-abortion -- I believe that was the context. "
Silly bitch, you got your facts WRONG, WRONG, WRONG and distorted the record once again. I called you and Hecate what I called you ONLY AFTER you accused me of a whol

a whole lot of things that just simply were not true, and then literally added insult to injury by calling me something to rival "fuckstain." It was only then that I retaliated by using the words I used. Moreover, you consistently accused me of hating women and wanting to oppress them becuase I stated that I found abortion morally problematic, WHILE AT THE SAME TIME MAKING it clear that I in NO WAY ADVOCATED MAKING IT ILLEGAL and was therefore reluctantly pro-choice.

Re: The OBL Tape
I think this will hurt Bush. People ARE scared about terrorism, and the tape DOES remind them of it - but the "undecideds" who usually break against the incumbent are going to see this tape and say, "Do I want to be seeing this OBL guy on my TV for the next 4 years? Let´s give the new guy a chance."

Just read this on yahoo news:
"'Americans go to the polls at a time of war and ongoing threats unlike any we have faced before,' Bush said."
"In response to the videotape, the Bush administration warned state and local officials that the tape may be intended to promote or signal an attack on the United States."
The guy is a such a transparently m---er f---ing liar and opportunist. He probably can't believe the gullibility of the American voter himself. This whole terror thing is a great big diversion frrom his miserably failed "presidency". The tape was the October Surprise.
So why are we surprised, we expected it?
I fear for the election. The only resolution I see is that the nation divide. A Democrat or Green in the north and a redneck Republican in the south. Everybody to your side and no more contact.
