Was helping out the Kerry campaign stop in Iowa. We did get around 3,000 people in freezing cold weather (howling winds). But when Kerry took the stage the sun broke through the clouds and started warming us all up. Overheard campaign staffers saying at the end of the day that things they were hearing from around the country make them cautiously optimistic about Tuesday. I was working as a driver for some of the VIPs at the rally. After being there today I feel better and more confident since I saw the staffers reflecting that confidence. By the way turnout wasn't greater for 3 reasons...
1. Very little advanced notice about the appearence appeared in the media here.
2. It was F******* cold today.
3. Both our universities in the state were playing football games at the same time as the rally.
Again overall the feeling at the even was one of confidence after surviving the Osama tape and the media's spin on how it might help Bush.

There's a Star Trek episode in which a transporter malfunction separates Kirk into two versions of himself. One is a thoughtful and caring but indecisive Kirk, and the other is an aggressive raging lunatic. The lunatic Kirk behaves in ways that are harmful to himself and others, and alternates between evil scheming and wild flailing to get what he wants. The lunatic is grotesque, but the reasoning sensible Kirk needs that part of himself to be effective. After about fifty minutes the sensible Kirk and the crew capture the maniac, use the transporter to re-merge them and put the lunatic back in his place, and all is well again.
Today's Republican party is the lunatic Kirk. Unfortunately, they're in charge. But not much longer, we know.

State of Education
In truth, I hate to bore people with the details of the current state of education. But Mrs. DWD was encouraging me to turn off the computer when the other thread had a discussion going. I had a few thoughts. (if they are interesting or helpful, I can do more.)
Education is a frigging mess at this juncture. The No Child Left Behind Act should be retitled, "There are no schools that will be recognized for doing a good job" act. Honestly, requiring an improvement every year is unrealistic. The main reason is that if a school (or teacher) is doing a decent job: raising the scores is nigh unto impossible. If a majority of your students are performing to their potentional, how are we supposed to get more?
We do not teach children to think, we teach them to do tests. Our curriculum is dedicated to improving test scores with the individual be damned.
The presence of the multinational publishing companies in education is a damned shame. The reader we are currently using(Scholastic) is the WORST reading book I have ever seen. Of the five hundred pages of the book, less than 10% contains "good" stuff for the kids to read.
And on and on

DWD:
I don't mean to quibble, but the state of schooling' and of schools is un many ways deplorable. Don't use that to indict the process of education which many teachers accomplish daily in spite of the state of the schools.
To understand the state of schools and schooling, you have to imagine the system in which the symptoms you describe make sense. The emphasis on testing has been debated and deplored by teachers for decades. The attachment to testing is ideological, and is founded on the same literalism which underwrites the claims about the inerrancy of Scripture. The nostrums of Accountability are just the imposition of accountancy to Fundamentalist doctrinal certainty in the guise of measurement. High stakes testing is the institutionalized persona of Calvinist predestination. Higher standards always means more people excluded from the social benefits which on average, more education confers. The students at greatest risk in this system are the same children who have always been a risk in thsi system. testing just gives the system the "objective"e vidence it needs to encat the self-fulfilling prophesies.
This aint new information. But it has been systematically trivialized when it was not ignored for 20 to 30 years at least.

Listen, everyone:
We're days before the elections, OK. There is definely a republican slant in the cable news outlets, and even the network news. It's going to be like that right up to, and including, election day. It'll also be like that if this election is close, and things trail on after Nov 2.
The reason that this is so is because these station don't want the slightest stink of a bias against the president. So, they will naturally be biased favorably towards him. They do this because the right raises a stink to high heaven every time bad news that harms Bush comes down the pike. Look what happened to Rather with the Bush AWOL deal. I've barely heard a peep about any Iraq casualties on the news in the past few weeks. Most polls numbers that are shown have Bush up by a few points.
I think most people can discern the bias themselves. If you don't like it, then turn it off. If you can't stand it, then email them, call them, write them, take some action. Don't lose your head over it. Try to do something where you can make the most difference, and that's on the local level. Write to your local papers, and local TV stations.
Anyway, it's probably immaterial to the outcome of this election by now. There are lots of other factors in play.

The turnouts are one of the basic reasons that win or lose, I keep saying they do not have long. Eyes are open, ears are listening.
The stories I am reading on voter suppression also tell me that the Republicans may not have long to continue this charade.
Wait till the voters begin to realize that the Republicans are basically attempting to shut down the ability of people to actually vote, not simply by suppression, but by gumming the works up so badly it cannot work. They can pull all the technicals they want, in the long run, Bad Faith becomes very telling.

WHO DID IT: Looters unleashed last year by the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq.
WHAT WAS LOOTED: All U.N.-sealed Muthanna structures were broken into. If the so-called Bunker 2 was breached and looted, it would be the second recent case of restricted weapons at risk of falling into militants' hands. Muthanna Chemical Weapons facility.

As far as the Daily Show as a source of new goes, who else showed Joe Biden looking like he was going to jump the table and start whaling on Ashcroft? On "real" news shows, you'd be lucky to hear a complete sentence as uttered. Daily Show ran what felt like at least thirty seconds of it.
Fake news? Strictly speaking, I guess that's true. And one of the last places to get truth these days. Not to mention a good laugh.
Somewhere Mark Twain is watching the Daily Show -- and probably thinking "I wish I'd said that" from time to time. Or maybe he and Abraham Lincoln are elbowing each other in the ribs and saying "Ha ha -- good one!"
I just hit the Yahoo survey, and the Daily Show was the only choice it gave me. PBS wasn't offered as an option.
My daily news comes from the dead tree L.A. Times and the web, not the TV. The BBC & CNN International aren't available on the tube, and I can read faster than I can listen, which makes me some sort of textual deviate, I suppose.

OT but an interesting extra vote for Kerry: every saturday i take a 22 year old to breakfast at a local diner. he is mildly mentally retarded. today i picked him up at his dad and mom's house for breakfast and after he got in the car he announced to me that he is probably going to vote for kerry. his dad has given big bucks to bush and the rethuglican party so i was rather shocked.
evidently he has heard enough of my comments about bush in discussions with the other regulars at the diner, and he told me people where he works talk about bush and kerry, and he has decided to vote differently from his dad - who he adores.

As far as I know, there has never been a Presidential election with significantly higher turnout vs. the Presidential election before it that did not result in change of political party in the White House. If there are any uber-junkies out there who know otherwise, speak up, but I think this argues that only massive fraud can save Bush, and I'm cautiously optimistic that the Republicans are not quite operationally capable of massive fraud.

This is horrible news. Bush has returned to his original "October Surprise".
Bush / Rove will do anything to win the Oval Office.
The Bushies are taking on the Baathists/Sunnis.
This has been planned for this weekend, probably for months. That's why the British Black Watch units were moved from Basra to Baghdad, to free U.S. troops to do this.
Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, no fool, most likely has already left the city if he, indeed, was even there.
This is going to be horrifically bloody. Scores, if not hundreds of Americans may die in this one.

Quentin Compson is probably long gone, but the poem at 1:56AM gave me chills. Thanks

meme, Virginia is closer than anybody knows. I went grocery shopping yesterday, and the lot was filled with Kerry/Edwards bumper stickers. I kept running into others inside the store wearing Kerry buttons. I took those opportunities to remind people to vote for James Socas for congress, and people promised to, but I had trouble getting away. People wanted to stand there in the middle of Wegman's and tell me every horrible thing Bush has done, as if I didn't already know.
I really think it's going to be closer than anybody thinks.

Mr. Bill, where did you get that Cronkite quote? I cannot find it anywhere, either by following the link or through Google.
