Atrios,
All I know is that my friend at Walter Reed says she's seeing injuries like she's never seen before and that the press just won't cover it. Lots of amputees just like Max Cleland, both men and women. But if we ignore them, I guess they don't exist.

I don't really want to know. I don't need to. I've already been depressed by both the loss of the election, the sight of so many men and women dying for nothing but the whims of a few deluded people, and I don't want to see it cause should those who support this war see it their delusions about the administration and their ideology insist that they will merely deny the truth about what they were seeing. Such denial would only encourage more depression on my part and I don't want to be depressed. It affects me and it affects my family. When it affects my family I get defensive. When I get defensive about my family nobody in my way is safe.
Creative Election Protest idea #32

Drop these slips into a few of the magazines you read while waiting

ABC Newsnight did a show back in late Sept. or early Oct. on the LARGE number of troops coming home with serious brain damage (kevlar vests protecting the torso, so that what used to kill a soldier doesn't kill him anymore, but severe impacts leaving them with brain damage).
My recollection is that something like 60% (!) of the wounded have moderate to severe brain damage. A hugely under-reported story here in George's Happyland.

War on allies (see the Guardian)
Three British soldiers and an army interpreter are suing the American military after their vehicle was rammed by a US tank transporter in Iraq.
The $2.3m (£1.2m) suit is the first against the US army from coalition troops since the invasion of Iraq. It seeks to exploit provisions normally reserved for Iraqis claiming compensation for family members wrongfully killed in US raids.
The Britons, members of a Royal Military Police unit on duty with their Kuwaiti interpreter, suffered serious injuries on May 7 last year when their Land Rover was struck twice from behind by the hulking transporter.
The vehicle spun out of control and off the road, somersaulting into a sand dune. All four passengers were hurled out of the vehicle, and the Land Rover was wrecked.
Two of the Britons - the driver, Corporal Jane Mc-Lauchlan of Hartlepool, and her commanding officer and front seat passenger, Staff Sergeant James Rogerson - received lasting injuries.
Cpl McLauchlan suffered multiple skull fractures, and a punctured lung and liver. She still has some degree of permanent brain damage, including memory loss.

According to Merrian Websters there are four usages to the word 'fag'.
1. A poor or worn out end, remnant such as the untwisted end of a rope.
2. As a verb: To work hard, or toil, to tire by strenuous activity, exhaust. To wear out.
3. Cigarette
4. Faggot, (with no clear meaning but implied to mean someone who works too hard)
5. Toil or drudgery
Did you mean drudgery? Did you mean Matt Drudge? Are you saying that Matt Drudge is trolling the previous thread?
There are several to choose from, but Newt Gingrich comes to mind.

It sure is fun to watch the advance of fascism, the economic failure, the social injustice, the failure of journalism, militarism, and the general disregard for truth, while going to the chapter of the book to see the roots of all of this in the 1930's. Makes for jolly bedtime reading.

Yes, but it would be the solution to the GOP's nightmare: Mary Cheney
Condi (or Powell) as VP. I dunno, maybe. I vascillitate between thinking the Bushistas will continue to pander to the base and push a radically conservative agenda, or they'll try to reign it in some this time around as a way of ensuring the Little King's "legacy". Frankly, I lean towards the latter. I've still yet to figure out why the GOPranos ran the Dim Son rather than the relatively competent Jeb (perhaps therein' lies the clue), but I do think the PNAC crowd is terribly interested in forming an empire and will try to stick around, "legacy" or no.

Wasn't there an incident in 2000, before the Supreme Court case, involving Cheney having to go to the hospital? Hilary running is such wild speculation that I refuse to even consider it right now. But if the Repugs thought running Rice would work for them, they'd do it.
I really don't imagine that by the time this 4 years is drawing to a close there are going to be many in this administration who would be considered electable.
What happens in 06 is going to have a lot to do with what happens thereafter.
Which is why we need to be working now on electing Democrats to Congress in 06.

Wasn't there an incident in 2000, before the Supreme Court case, involving Cheney having to go to the hospital? I'm not sure of the details, but I remember thinking at the time that he might have had another heart attack, and again I believe the claim was that it was the stress of the campaign that did it.
I'm almost willing to bet that it was in November, too.
Nora
OhmiGod, Nora, you're absolutely right. Thanks for picking up this Sanford and Son hustle:
November 22, 2000
WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Despite suffering "a very slight heart attack," Republican vice presidential candidate Dick Cheney said, "No doubt about my serving, all we have to do now is get elected."
[Fred Sanford holds his chest as if he's having a heart attack.]
Fred Sanford: Oh, this is the biggest one I ever had! You hear that Elizabeth? I'm coming to join you honey!

Just checked; he did have a heart attack in November, 2000.
Maybe someone was trying to tell him something then, too, and he didn't listen. Possibly this is the last call. Not that I would wish anything bad on Cheney; I want to see him alive and facing human justice for the things he's done.

Yes, Nora, there was.
"November 22, 2000 : With the presidential election hanging on a few hundred votes in Florida, Cheney checks into George Washington University Hospital with chest pains. Doctors insert a coronary stent to prop open a narrowed artery after what Cheney calls "a very slight heart attack." Doctors say Cheney should be able to resume all his normal activities." CNN

The Other Washington, in some ways I think that's the scariest thing about this war: the way the media have gone along with the Administration's desire to keep all images of the dead and the wounded out of the public consciousness. It's as if they've all been turned into non persons, as if they never existed at all. It's so incredibly cynical, and the thing that breaks my heart is that none of our mass media went against that. Keep the bad pictures and the bad thoughts away from the nice Americans and they won't realize what's happening and they'll vote for their good masters -- and damn it, it seems to have worked.

I was just thinking about what happens to the energy of a bullet which is stopped by a kevlar vest. It's gotta go somewhere, there being laws of conservation of energy and laws of inertia at play here which even kevlar cannot negate. I'd imagine any organ--liver, kidneys, etc--directly in the line of the impact would just about be jellied by the force of the impact, wouldn't it?

So, Trevor.
How's it feel to be a snarky little coward, the kind of person decent people despise and about whom entire literatures have been created so that normal people can say, "Yeah, I really think that kind of behavior is wrong"? Your life is a waste, and your parents would probably cast you out. How does that feel, exactly?
Did you watch "Private Ryan" the other night? Aren't you that pathetic loser, the guy who wandered around with all the ammo around his neck and caused the deaths of most of his comrades when they didn't have anything left to shoot, and who only shot one guy, an unarmed prisoner, even though lots of bad guys were right in front of him and he could have saved everybody? That's you, isn't it, Mr. Snarky? A Loser, capital L.
Please go away and die. Nobody cares about you, nobody wants you around, and we'll all be better off when you're gone. You and your gods, Dick Cheney and George W. Bush.

Don't forget the woman from Seattle who was fired from her job for taking photos of the troops caskets in the transport plane. And she wasn't a journalist, just a normal citizen! Pathetic.
When this is over (please hurry) and people see for themselves, everyday in their own communities, the wounded and maimed, it will be an ugly awakening.

Nora - a lot of that not knowing is because a lot of people willingly do not want to know. They've made that crystal clear. There are letters to the Dallas paper about just this very thing all the time.
There were people writing in defense of the affiliate here that refused to air Private Ryan (though they showed it in full last year for Veteran's Day - do they just forget everything from one moment to the next?) saying that all the blood and gore was inappropriate. There seems to be an neverending supply of fucktards who bitch any time the media mentions that people might actually be dying or getting injured in Iraq.
They don't want to know and they don't want anyone else to know. The only reason that I can fathom for this is that they realize that any knowledge of the real cost of a war will turn people against that war and, they fear, all wars. Some people just really like wars.

It's not a war crime if you've got moral clarity and vision. You can lie, torture, kill or commit genocide. Saddam awaits trial for doing exactly those things. Bush hasn't done the last one yet, but his gang is encouraging him to flatten Fallujah. And it appears he's on his way. But when he does, he'll be different from Saddam. Okay. This is where we are.
In fall of 2003, we were warned by our european allies that elections in Iraq had to be called, and pronto. The US lied and said it was impossible, that a census had to be done, they'd have to rewrite the iraqi constitution, etc. Instead the DoD went into Abu Ghraib mode and the Heritage Youth were sent to Baghad. Foot drag and foot drag until the Iraqis got really upset on April 6, 2004.
The US administration was stalling in order to provoke as much reaction to the occupation as possible, so they can go about the business of destroying Sunni cities--this being denied to the US and Britain by surrending Iraqi generals March 03.
The "Iraqi forces" now seem to be Kurdish militiamen. The US looks to be planning to finish off the Sunni. Thousands of them are homeless and camped out in the desert. As the Shia were not informed of the plan and thier reaction is unknown, Bush and Blair have also met to plan their interventions in the south.
Who knows what the reaction will be provoked in Damascus, Egypt or Saudi.
I assume that palms are suitably oiled .

At least he didn't make comments about chads when he got out of the hospital this time.
makes me think of one of my favorite songs. by steeleye span back in the 70s....
What makes you go abroad fighting for strangers
When you could be safe at home free from all dangers?
A recruiting sergeant came our way
To an Inn nearby at the close of day
He said young Johnny you're a fine young man
Would you like to march along behind a military band,
With a scarlet coat and a big cocked hat,
And a musket at your shoulder,
The shilling he took and he kissed the book,
Oh poor Johnny what will happen to ya?
The recruiting sergeant marched away
From the Inn nearby at the break of day,
Johnny went too with half a ring
He was off to be a soldier he'd be fighting for the King
In a far off war in a far off land
To face a foreign soldier,
But how will you fare when there's lead in the air,
Oh poor Johnny what'll happen to ya?
What makes you go abroad fighting for strangers
When you could be safe at home free from all dangers?
The sun shone hot on a barren land
As a thin red line took a military stand,
There was sling shot, chain shot, grape shot too,
Swords and bayonets thrusting through,
Poor Johnny fell but the day was won
And the King is grateful to you
But your soldiering's done and they're sending you home,
Oh poor Johnny what have they done to ya?
They said he was a hero and not to grieve
Over two wooden pegs and empty sleeves,
They carried him home and set him down
With a military pension and a medal from the crown.
You haven't an arm and you haven't a leg,
The enemy nearly slew you,
You'll have to go out on the streets to beg,
Oh poor Johnny what have they done to ya?
What makes you go abroad fighting for strangers
When you could be safe at home free from all dangers?

Sorry, between German and English I can't spell in either language anymore. The half bottle or better of Brugal rum isn't helping. For those of you wondering, Deutcshesmark 40 street. It is what the local road from Kaiserslautern west to Landstuhl was known as (B40?) due to the price of the hookers standing out there. Annabelles' was the local "ladies of ill repute" house just off the road.
Once again, there really is no way to hide the casualties, the press simply doesn't care to report on them. They are whores and have no interest in giving you the news. They would much rather tell you how you don't understand their job (calling WhitehouseHo).

I think the brain injuries are caused when a big explsions occurs very near to you. The brain bounces back and forth inside the skull and is damaged. In the past this would not have mattered because you would be dead from the injuries to your torso but the body armor reduces those significantly.

Well, that's very sad and pretty grim, but I seem to remember a report 1 or 2 months ago that stated that close to 30% of the woundeds are indeed amputees, deaf, blind or brain-damaged to some extent - at least definitively disabled in a very bad way, both for military and normal working lifes.
The explanation is basically that the dead/wounded ratio is bigger now than before; better protection and hitech medicine allows more woundeds to survive in the battlefield and after, but that also means that many who now survive and would've died in previous decades are actually disabled. So, that's a progress, but it also means that people should change how they perceive "wounded" when it comes to war, because in far more cases than before it's very grim and tragical.

Olaf glad and big, that is true. However, you need to ask just what such a thing means. Knocked over, bruises, seem okay otherwise. Think of infant shaking syndrome. Having your brain bounced around your skull is not good. Perhaps an adult shows the strain a little differently. I was once in an accident where I woke up in the hospital. Couldn't remember the week before. Finally got it up to about an hour before the accident. Did it harm me? Am I capable of judging that? Can you tell within weeks of the incident? Just because you don't bleed doesn't mean you aren't hurt or suffer injury. On the other hand, maybe everything is okay. The hell is never knowing the difference and being put in the position to wonder.

The Gonzales affair should demonstrate to the world the contempt the George Bush has not only for international law but for the American GIs who put their lives on the line for his vile politics.
That the American public--and the American news media--have not risen up in outrage over this is a sad commentary on the present state of affairs in this country. And we say we hold our military services in the highest regard.

how many amputees, how many wounded in hidden ways? etc.? Support Our Troops.
Just don't come home with a drug dependency, an alcohol problem, battle fatigue (malingering). Bushbaby--'we are proud of the job being done by our fighting men & women' which is why we tried to cut their benefits. at this point the only thing stupider than voting 2 wks ago for Goatboy is volunteering for military svc.
