The Economist didn't seem to have much good to say about Condi in 2000:
But if [Rice] deserves credit for [confronting the USSR on East Germany after the fall of the Berlin Wall], she deserves blame for a comparable failure: America’s early underestimation of Boris Yeltsin. During Mr Yeltsin’s first trip to the United States in 1989, she overruled the advice of the American embassy in Moscow on how to treat him. Instead of being ushered in to see the president through the front door of the White House, the Russian leader merely saw Mr Bush senior during a stop-by visit at the National Security Council.
This slight culminated in a more fundamental failure: while America was still hoping that Mr Gorbachev could reform the Soviet system, Russia and the rest were declaring independence. Any fool could see the Soviet Union was collapsing. It took the real brainboxes of the Bush White House to get on the wrong side of history.

The nomination comes as a sort of birthday present for Rice, who turned 50 on Sunday.

And Hecate, you ask, “What protests?”
I have thought this over for nearly two weeks now and I have decided to place blame where it is due. The Democratic Candidates did a good job (except for being too timid) and the party raised a lot of money. So, where does the blame lie for the apparent victory of an inferior man?
My answer is easy: the news media. All of the damned news media. I have not watched a news show. I have not read a newspaper beyond the headlines and will not. They are all fabrications and prevarications. They refused to tell us the truth when they had the chance: now, I remove that chance from them.
All of the rednecks and anti-intellectuals who people these desperate denizens of denial have little interest for me. Instead, I will withdraw into receiving my news from people whom I believe and respect. I have no interest in Righteous Joey Scarborough or Apologetic Aaron , Or Cringing Chris, or even the sublimely humorous – Jon Stewart. In truth, I can find NOTHING funny about the current situation facing my country.
So, turn off the tube. Throw out the papers. Live your lives the way that they should be led with care and concern and a feeling of community. But leave the corporate media to choke on their lack of readers and viewers. Withhold even cursory support for their lies: In truth, they made the mess we are in, let them try to find the stomach for telling the truth. If not, then to hell with it.

worse: they're under the impression that they're doing something meaningful.

to accuse the press of willfully lying is to succumb to yet another untruth: that the press is politically biased.
they are not, except to the extent that they are biased in favor of having comfortable, prestigious jobs that pay them well, give them a sense of importance, and provide lavish travel expense accounts.

Here's an oddity about this administration. There are all kinds of positions at a senior level which have been vacant for years. The most obvious and significant is Secretary of Army....
When there is no executive level chief, all kinds of things never get done, or get done very badly. One of them, within the government, is that various other kinds of personnel work is let go, which ends up causing decisions to not be taken and certainly not executed. Haphazard, half-ass. It's a very strange administration altogether.

The old saying was that a diplomat was someone who went abroad to lie for their country.
The rest of the world respected Powell enough to listen to him despite disagreeing.
The rest of the world isn't going to give Rice the time of day. Which is perfectly OK in a weird way, because her boss has no message he wishes to give the rest of the world.
Rice's job will be to go on Sunday talk shows and tell preposterous lies the hosts will be too chickenshit to call her on. She's already proved she can do it, too.

Will this be the final indignity that allows him to tell BushCo to go fuck themselves?"
Well, def, that was what it took for George Tenet. I'll just bet that Powell had a two book deal anyway.

when we she was in charge of national security, we had the biggest failure in the history of the word "security".
by definition, she can't do any worse than she already has.

McCain on News Hour.
He is not a moderate, he's a shill for GWB. Porter Goss is doing the right thing. The CIA needs to be cleaned up.
What the fuck. Porter Goss is the problem. Read the 911 report, Congress (Porter was chair of House Intel committee) is just as much to blame for the problems as the "bureacracy".

Maybe to protest Rice's appointment you could all burn yourselves in front of the White House.
The Republicans control the entire federal government. Why are people still whining about what Democrats and leftsists are doing? Why do people care what Democrats and leftists are doing? What is the government doing? Why hasn't it gotten off its fat, Republican, government-subsidized ass and got something done for its supporters?
Why are some people talking to US about what we should be doing instead of lobbying their regime about what IT should be doing?
___
various other kinds of personnel work is let go, which ends up causing decisions to not be taken and certainly not executed. Haphazard, half-ass.
That's intentional. Leave all decisions to the person of the executive.

Unless I miss my guess, this will lead to Skip Gnehm resigning as ambassador to Jordan. He's one of the last of the old guard, speaks Arabic, was ambassador to Kuwait during the first gulf war and called back to Jordan only because Powell asked for him.
That open an important post for some GOP Pioneer.
Oh, wait, you'd have to have some courage to be ambassador to Jordan. That leaves out 90% of the current GOP.

Remember when you were a kid and you'd be out playing and you'd accidentaly step in some dog poop? And you'd have to get a twig or a popsicle stick or something to get it all out of the treads on your sneakers?
This is sorta like we stepped in dog poop and we're trying to get it off by stepping in more dog poop.
Or maybe it's like we stepped in dog poop, and we're stepping in more dog poop with our other foot so our shoes will match.
Neither one is terribly smart...

I agree wholeheartedly with 'turn off the media'.
As a news/politics junkie I was entirely captured by cable news in 2000.
I turned it all off in 2001. My TV is a lonely thing, now.
The 2004 election was an entirely different animal without listening or watching all of the pundits, the spinmeisters, and the 'experts' do their thing. Now I feel like watching that stuff, even reading it, is a form of self-abuse.
They get paid big bucks to do the nation's thinking for it. I nearly regret I don't have a cable service I can cancel.

ok, this is a serious question:
given that our foreign relations are already just about as fucked as it's possible to make them, is it really any worse to have child prodigy Condi Rice in that job than it would be to have four more years of General Powell?
I mean, maybe we should quit even pretending that our foreign policy is capable of nuance. At least nobody's ever seen Condi in a uniform (except maybe a Girl Scout uniform).

I certainly have empathy for folks outside the US. But let me put it this way:
I am very glad that I, my wife and my *5 year old son* now live in a small town, 3 hours from a major city. Until last year I was 5 minutes from one of the biggest ports in the country.
Not to be a fear monger, but the liklihood that Condi will only antagonize the world will potentially make my old neighbors much less safe.

The good news is that the Foreign Service is run by underlings; ambassadors are almost always political appointees and temporary. The underlings are career people and usually stay in one place for a long time.
The bad news is that Condi might be required to purge the underlings of 'liberals' and 'disloyalist' and replace them with loyal Republican incompetents.

Rice: Um. Bin Laden Determined to Strike in the U.S.
BEN-VENISTE. Isn't it a fact, Dr. Rice, that the Aug. 6 P.D.B. warned against possible attacks in this country? And I ask you whether you recall the title of that P.D.B.

I despise that incompetent danger to us all, Condi Rice. Having said that, I think our nation will actually be safer with her out of the National Security Advisor position.
She is a literal ticking time bomb waiting to go off on our country.

Did anyone see a Kevin Sites piece on NBC about a marine who murdered an unarmed, injured insurgent in a Fallujah mosque?
here is part of the story...
"...A Marine can be heard saying on the pool footage provided to Reuters Television: "He's fucking faking he's dead. He faking he's fucking dead."
"The Marine then raises his rifle and fires into the man's head. The pictures are too graphic for us to broadcast," Sites said. No images of the shooting were shown in the footage provided to Reuters"

The good news is that the Foreign Service is run by underlings; ambassadors are almost always political appointees and temporary. The underlings are career people and usually stay in one place for a long time.
Not always. Though the nice missions go to political cronies, 'shitty little countries' get career diplomats. Joe Wilson was ambassador to Gabon. And it's actually the career guys (and gals) in the shitty little countries who tend to be the most important, because those countries are the ones most likely to turn into next year's big fucking mess.

mj,
I don't see Condi being groomed for the president. Republican or not, "the base" ain't gonna vote for a non-married African-American woman. Remember, these are people who think the CIA is a "hotbed of liberalism", so grasping reality isn't their strong point. And that's not even considering her complete lack of qualifications or even a career to justify such a stunt.
The GOPranos may be mendacious and venal and maybe even a bit evil, but they ain't that crazy or stupid.

You know, this is grim, but there is a silver lining in all this (Condi at state, CIA purges). Eventually, different factions of the country will be in a purity war, and they'll all fracture and/or be so vile that the public will demand action.

CNN carried it a few hours back, when the Reuters footage appeared. They blacked out the shooting, but it was of one of a bunch of people bleeding to death against a wall. One old guy with a beard.
Of course, after Abu Ghraib, the Iraqi insurgents were already loathe to surrender. Now that they know they can be shot on site by kids pumped up on war fever.... And I don't blame the individual so much as I do the people who put him and

Wonder what Mullah Dobson thinks about those, um, "weird issues" in her personal life?
I think Dobson's probably prepared to overlook the personal sexual proclivities of anyone who can publicly contribute to his ego trip. Christians know you can always write that kind of thing off to ignorance or extremely poor gaydar, because it's not your fault you didn't stone the fag or the fornicator if you didn't know.
On the other hand, there's the story of what he did to Gil Moegerle's first marriage.
Jeez, enough about Dobson already. He's probably got some lackey googling this up and printing it out for him to spooge over tomorrow morning.

The bad news is that Condi might be required to purge the underlings of 'liberals' and 'disloyalist' and replace them with loyal Republican incompetents.
Just me,
For 3 years now, recently retired underlings from numerous departments in our government have been telling the news networks, in the off the record editorial meetings that go on all the time, that this administration is working to politicize all the career guys and gals, in all departments. Not just state, but dod and the Pentagon and education, etc.
The Pendleton Act is history.
Nearest I can figure it, the Repubs feel that if they replace everyone with loyalists, then, even if a Dem does become president, it would be impossible to clean house, and instead, the Dem would be paralyzed.
It is either that, or the Repubs never expect to lose, or, they are just plain interested in destroying any government that they can't control.
Although this story is finally getting some slight play via Goss and the CIA housecleaning, this has been going on throughout this administration.
I know I sound like a broken record, but, IMHO, this is the great, untold story of the last four years.

OT: For social epidemiologists
...
Morris is one of three men who killed their families in Oregon in just over a year. Criminologists say there are about 50 familicides in the entire nation each year.
The bodies of Christian Longo's wife and three small children were found in two coastal bays around Christmas 2001. He pleaded guilty to two of the killings and a jury convicted him of the others and sentenced him to death.
In February 2002, Robert Bryant killed his wife and four children and himself with a shotgun at their home outside McMinneville.
All three men had been under financial pressure. All three were deeply involved in religion.
....
Wonder how this will track over the next four years, as more of the moral values voters run up against the spluttering economy and the soon-to-be-overhauled personal bankruptcy laws.

I agree with smarty jones--and not just because I live in philly.
Rice was NSA, her job is to coordinate security policy among ALL of the agencies involved--DoS, CIA, FBI, DoD, NSA, etc.
What we have seen in the past four years is nothing but bureaucratic infighting and disarray.
Everytime Powell said one thing and the Pentagon another, every time the intel services disagreed, everytime the President looked bad because of a stupid decision on security, it was, by job description, HER FAULT.
--And I haven't even mentioned that she was in charge of national security and she was in power for 9/11, the worst attack on the US since PEarl Harbor.
Now, I am sure the DoS is not going to like her being in charge.
And I assume Armitage will also leave ASAP, unless he has already tendered his resignation.
This is an NSA that, according to the media, didn't even read the NIE on Iraqi WMD.
So the President doesn't read, and his top security advisor doesn't either?
A senior Administration official who briefed journalists on Friday said neither Mr Bush nor National Security Adviser Condoleezza Rice read the [NIE] in its entirety. "They did not read footnotes in a 90-page document," he said, referring to the annex.
The official said Mr Bush was briefed on the estimate's contents, but "I don't think he sat down over a long weekend and read every word of it."
Yeah, why bother, it's not like you were going to start a war based on the information in the report...

Smarty - good god - I am heartsick. I feel sorry for those soldiers, they've been turned into what they are by their superiors and by this war. No good will ever come from this war. There is no good thing that can come from such a monumental and monstrous lie.
Those people who do make it home are going to have really hard adjustments and I wonder how many will make it? I'm thinking not as many as Vietnam and that was almost the ruin of a generation. And those people in the WH - they don't give a shit at all.
It is monstrous. It is evil.

My theory is that Bush assumes the Dems will go hard-core after ONE of his nominees, and he's sending all of his hack nominees up at the same time to distract and confuse everyone.
My theory is that Bush is trying to provoke multiple filibusters to get the Republicans in the Senate to "go nuclear" and reduce the cloture threshold to a simple majority.

I had a very frightening nightmare last night:
Sun Myung Moon had succeeded in deceiving the entire Republican party into believing that he was the "second coming" - bigger that Jesus. He had lured the Reps to his coronation in DC this past winter. The Dominionist had complied but Moon had set a trap decades ago - he had been working on destroying the USA since the 60's as a payback for the Korean war. He had secretly teamed up with the little megalomaniac up in North Korea, and had been funding his nuclear program.
The fundies were so wrapped up in the Rapture that they allowed Moon to push the button and blow half of America off the globe. Then he could claim his coming and continue his world domination as the son of God. And the Bible belt was happy because their Father had called them home - together with millions of innocent non-believers. They died happily ever-after.

the incompetence of Condi is deep, wide and legendary. We will be reading about the failures of the NSA and the intel crowd for decades to come (if we are lucky to be around!)
another thing about that bozo rice... she (along with that other war whore, Rumsfeld) pushed that insulting and outrageous claim that the violent and endemic insurgency in Iraq was not a big deal, especially when you consider that Nazi werewolf brigades were fighting the allies in Germany.

Most decent thing Stephanopolous has ever done.

What do you get when you combine a beautiful Sunday morning, a Downtown Cleveland venue, a world-famous photographer and over a thousand Clevelanders ... completely naked?
How about art?
It all happened recently, and 19 Action News anchor Sharon Reed was there.
But Sharon didn't just report the story, she became part of it -- posing nude with over a thousand others for a groundbreaking and controversial photo that all of Cleveland will be talking about.
Our cameras were rolling as the unbelievable scene took place. So, YOU be the judge. Is it art? Or is it something else? See it to believe it.
Watch "Body Of Art" ... Tonight on 19 Action News at 11, right after CSI: MIAMI.

LFOD, these blogs support elected dems because they're elected, not forced down our throats by thieves and liars whose hipocracy is the only consistency about them. So what if a soldier killed someone. that's what they do when they're lied to, scared, badly trained, unsupported by their government and given to believe that all the brown ones are their enemies. To blame the victims is the usual resort of the weak-minded and thoughtless.

The thing that scares me is that all the key decisions made by the administration involve a very small number of people. Disturbingly incestuous, and highly politicized.
Ya think?
Well, when is everyone else going to catch on?

Lawrence Peter commented in a later commentary on the 'Peter Principle' ("people rise to the level at which they are incompetent and stay there") to the effect that, in practice, white males _do_ rise above that level, and minorities can't rise _to_ that level, so our economy builds on the foundation of competent work done by under-recognized, under-promoted, competent and over-qualified minority workers, whose work supports the incompetent white male bosses.
Clearly things have greatly improved in the 20 years since he drew that conclusion.
I note also the variety of papers pointing out that consanguinity -- cousin marriage -- is prevalent in Iraq, causing tight family clans to which loyalty outranks any idea of country or nation or democracy.
Interestingly, did you hear the Bush family may be grooming Jeb to run for President after George W. is done? Nothing like a little inbreeding to strengthen the loyalty to your small group over any notion of patriotism.

Looks like the CIA guy who was asked to reconsider his resignation over the weekend has made up his mind. And he's not the only one. Reuters
The top two officials at the CIA's clandestine unit resigned on Monday after clashing with the new management of the agency at a time when it is fighting terrorism and supporting U.S. operations in Iraq.
Stephen Kappes, deputy director for operations, and his deputy Michael Sulick submitted their resignations and a senior covert officer will take charge of the Directorate of Operations, CIA Director Porter Goss said in a statement.

I am sure that this has been said in one form or another above but I'll say it again anyway. Atrios - why are we still pulling punches when it comes to Condi?
"Condi will be the closest thing to a "grownup" there is..."
She has demonstrated time and time again that she is incompetent, unimaginative, loyal to the administration above the interests of the country, and unwilling to accept responsibility for anything. ("We weren't told that we had something to do.")
How will these attributes help her win the friendship and cooperation from the nations of the world that we so desperately need right now? Our "allies" see that we have re-elected a moron and a fool and now we plan to send them a moron and a fool as our top diplomatic official.
The Democrats should stand by their recent candidates emphasis on the need for diplomacy by filibustering Rice's appointment. She should have been fired after 9-11 and she will be a disaster at the State Dept. I predict a mass exodus of talent from State if she becomes Sec. of State.

How's this work for a thesis? In term one Bush surrounded himself with "advisors." In term two he sees no more need for this, only for sycophants. The reason why I cannot know, but it's fairly obvious this is the emerging pattern. Not that the "advisors" first term were actually consulted--for example Paul O'Neil, Richard Clarke, or even Colin Powell.

So let's get this straight, the chimp administration was not alarmed about the PDB titled Bin Laden determined to strike in the United States because it was based on old and stale information. Yet they delcare an orange level terror threat in NYC's financial district based on two and three year old information during a presidential campaign so the can spread their fear and smear to the fundies. Does anyone in this tic brained administration even have half a clue?

Okay, Monday evening, time to write to my Senators again, this time telling them to oppose Ms. Rice in the confirmation hearings.
My God, as New York Senators, they should be sharpening their knives, eager to take her on. Just use the information from the 9/11 report and question her on it -- grill her on it -- and doesn't she have to be under oath in the confirmation hearings? What a pleasure that will be, to finally get Condi Rice under oath and ask her some questions about her role in the downgrading of counterterrorism prior to 9/11.
Bring it on. Put that woman under oath and make her answer the questions. All of them.

But I can't wait to hear the values crowd squeal like piggies when their taxes go up and their kids are drafted.
Chimp won't raise taxes. He'll just continue on his reckless driving-fast-and-drunk-on-a-mountain-road fiscal policy of towering deficits until the international financial markets pull the plug and the dollar plummets like a brick.
Most of the sheep won't understand that their God-given currency has lost value, and we don't need to buy nothin' from furriners anyways. Until the economy tips into a nasty recession/depression.
As for sacrificing their kids, a depressing number seem ready and willing to do so rather than exit the fantasy-bubble the Chimp has created for them.

tech98 - Man I hate that D word, but in 2000, when we all realized that that was the first time the Repugs had held the executive and legislature since Hoover, I started having visions of Grapes of Wrath. And they've only gotten sharper since.
Shit, for those of us who had parents or grandparents who went through the last Depression it is really a terrifying thought. I grew up listening to Depression stories. They were all funny stories, but there was horror around the edges.

I urge everybody who has a Senator who's likely to pay attention to write them and tell them in no uncertain terms to oppose Condi's elevation to SoS.
If the Bushies think that we're going to suffer outrage fatigue and be unable to keep up with the atrocities, I, for one, intend to prove them wrong. I've already written my senators about Gonzales, and tonight I wrote them about Rice. I'll keep up the pressure as much as I can, and as long as he keeps proposing these bozos, I'm going to do what I can to get my Senators to stand up and be counted.

Given that Bush isn't listening to his advisors, what difference does it make? Powell did and said what he was told. Condi will, too. Anything she might have said or done as NSA would have been ignored, and as SoS, what, we're expecting something different?
Slightly OT; is Bush trying to set some sort of GOP record for appointing and promoting minorities to top positions? Not that any of 'em were any good, but by sheer numbers, this has to be good GOP campaihn fodder. Phony as hell, but when did that ever stop 'em?

Especially if the rumours of Bolton as Assistant are true. State is for limp-wristed librul negotiations and talk, which is why it's marginalised by the Busheviks.
Now if Bolton could find a way to schedule negotiations and then show up and shoot everybody across the table and film it... then the Busheviks and the Little Green Raelians will start respecting State.

Like you can remember the smell of summer rain when you were a child, or exactly what you were feeling when your favorite song was playing as a teenager, I will always be flooded with an intense sensation of disgust -- this I will never cease to feel until the day I die.
Funny, my feelings about Nixon and Reagan have long since dissapated. Never with this one.

The hate in here is so thick I'm drowning in it.Is there any point for us to go on living?
Contemplating Condi Rice as Secretary of State is like contemplating a fly trapped in amber. The fly itself is of no consequence. But you can't stop wondering how the hell it got there.

Well, I see Bush is continuing on his quest to make America isolated from all her former allies and friends. Given the degree of sheer incompetence she showed as NSA and the degree of ignorance of the world around her, the only possible qualification she brings to SoS is that of having President Bush's ear (and God only knows what else she may have had of his). However, I rather doubt that this is going to get her any credibility in the capitols of other nations. This is after all the same woman that tried to claim several months AFTER 9/11/01 that there was no way anyone could have foreseen this attack nor that airplanes could be used as missiles.
I'd say I was shocked and surprised, but I have watched the Bush Administration from the outset so I am quite unsurprised. Now, disgusted, disturbed, contemptuous, and a whole range of similar feelings, those I do have. This is an Administration that rewards personal loyalty at a higher premium than competence and qualifications for the job being filled.
Condi Rice was an absolute failure as NSA, and she will quite possibly be even less effective as SoS. I have to wonder at times if placing minorities into positions where they do not have the expertise to competently execute their jobs is a back door way of bolstering a rather racist argument regarding the actual abilities of minorities. I say this because aside from personal loyalty to Bush I cannot find any other explanation for why this woman is in her job, let alone being promoted to SoS. Not to mention Gonzales, the public emasculation of Colin Powell as well as the destruction of his credibility.
This is the most incompetent Administration I have ever heard of, as well as the most ideologically driven one in many decades. Not a good thing for America, particularly when all branches of government are under the same party's control. After all, the genius of American government structure from the Founding Fathers onwards was divided government, to prevent the very situation that currently exists in America. I rather think they (The FF) would be appalled by what America is becoming under the Bush Republicans. I know much of the world is.

Scotian, I, too, have been thinking about the Founding Fathers lately, and, while they didn't like the idea of political parties, the very design of the government was engineered to keep "passions" in check. They would certainly not have been happy to see one group -- and a group with such an extreme ideology, one not shared by close to half of the country -- dominating all three branches of government.

That's not exactly the case. These people are bright enough. A few are out of their element. Condi is definitely one of them. They're going to get blamed for a whole lot of shit, I'm afraid.
The stupid, rich, white boy from Connecticut is, however, the worst.

I should add it is something I only occasionally wonder, particularly when I consider Condi Rice. It is not something I actually seriously believe. However, I do agree wholeheartedly with both of your assessments, the one regarding the blame they will be wearing, and most especially about the resident of the Oval office.
Incidentally, I enjoy your posts when I run across them, thought I'd mention that...

With his resignation today, Secretary of State Colin Powell is being warmly remembered as a voice of moderation within an increasingly immoderate Bush administration, a calm and subtle diplomat seeking to build consensus and coalition. Compared to the arrogance of Rumsfeld, the incompetence of Rice and the hubris of the President, these tributes seem fitting.
On the merits, however, I believe history will be much less kind to Powell, a man who unquestionably dedicated his life to the service of the American people. His two contributions to posterity, authoring the Powell Doctrine and selling Bush's Iraq war to the global community, will blight his reputation. The first was understable for a cautious Chairman of the Joint Chiefs; the latter seems inexplicable to this day.

Colin Powell is a traitor to the country, betrayer of the men in uniform, violator of the UCMJ, complicit in terrorism, and as big a turd as the R party ever laid on America (except for his bosses).
That 'who me' janitor face on him hides one of the world's greatest pig liars, and man of so much cowardice that he kissed every white ass ever presented to him.

This administration said it was going to run the government like a business, so it should be no surprise that Condoleeza "Not My Job" Rice would be promoted to Secretary of State. Loyalty is far mor important to this administration than competence, as they've shown time and time again. Why should the second term be anything other than more of the same.

no, not if you wish to appear semi-intelligent. Most 'neo-cons' are Jewish to begin with ... and if as you lot say neocon Jews (Wolfowitz, Kristol, Perle etc etc) call the shots, how is it they aren't the masters?
I think the phrase you are looking for is :
"The Jew is using the black man for muscle!"
