There ya go. If the right would stop trying to control the private lives of others, then it wouldn't matter whether if he was gay or not. Not that there's anything wrong with that.

Ornicus said it best. They back us into the corner with vicious and unrelenting attacks which really defines our two options; give up with our bellies upended and our legs facing the sky, or totally kowtow and acknowledge them as the superior ones.
Ornicus -
"Liberals need to punch back, hard. And they need to stop believing that being nicer about it is going to win the debate. Of course, civility is always called for when the discussion is civil; but there are times when the gloves of civility have to come off. The line, I think, has to be drawn when eliminationism and violence -- even intimations of them -- enter into the picture. The response needn't be ugly, but it needs to be sharp, hard, and unmistakable".
I'm sure, if you have been married or in close contact with an abusive spouse, you were offered the two same options. When cornered, it really is fight or flight. With our percentages, do we really have an option?

Expect nothing from any career politicians, repub or dem, any more than you expect anything from the media whores. They're all absolutely owned by the corporations. Not that I'm telling anyone anything they don't already know....
So an American soldier shot an injured Iraqi in cold blood. Terrible, yes, but at least he saw who he was killing. Most of "our" slaughter has been from a clean impersonal distance. And of course the blood is all on Bush's hands. But kings never pay.
Bring it all down. Don't pay your taxes; boycott the corporations and the churches. Tell your lying congressman to go fuck himself if he won't denounce Bush and this war.
Sorry, I'm really pissed, and unreasonable. But America is dead.

Dean, Clark.....whoever. As long as the person takes no shit. The repubs wake up everyday saying to themselves, 'what is the talking point today, what should be the headline this evening'. When have dems ever stood up in the last 4 years. They have been rolled for the last 4 years. Particularly disgusting was how the dems stood around and let Cleland get smeared as Osama, for voting against a provision in a dem created bill. Or how Kerry was the bad guy for going ot Vietnam, while Bush's desertion led to dan rather getting his fangs torn out If that is not the epitome of weakness, what is? Pathetic.

I really find it distasteful that the homosexuality of Ken Mehlman is under discussion.
After all, if he is gay, as people seem to think, shouldn't he be working to remove the anti-Gay platform of the GOP?
If I were in his position, with his ambiguous sexual orientation, I would, just to get that monkey off my back.

This isn't about who Ken Mehlman is or isn't screwing, it's about whether a gay man is going to head the "values" party.
More precisely, it's whether a gay man is going to stand by silently and let his paymasters crucify others of his kind for fun and profit. It's called "collaboration," and he deserves nothing but the most contemptuous treatment for it.

Full disclosure: I'm watching MSNBC as I spout my revolutionary jargon.
Michael Ware, the embedded Aussie reporter for Time, seems like he's gone off his nut. Not that I blame him, I'm just surprised they let him on TV.
No, it's about going after them with everything we have. We just have to be organized enough to do it. Remember the old days, when sites provided e-mail lists? Dredge those babies up, and keep at it.

Out them all. Any gay person who is supporting the neo-fascist agenda deserves no space in the closet. I think it's safe to say that this particular courtesy of keeping quiet has been rendered "quaint" by the current circumstances. Ahem.
They're no better than the Jews who policed the ghettoes for the Nazi regime, and we should make them understand that their collaboration will not give them a free pass from the train ride that Nero's biggest supporters supporters (read: Sun Myung Moon) have in mind for us.

the story about a US Marine who shot and killed an injured Iraqi prisoner
I really find it distasteful that the homosexuality of Ken Mehlman is under discussion.
Mehlman is not gay. He is a closeted heterosexual. Which is why his spokesman and others close to him will privately confirm that he is heterosexual, but neither they nor ne will go on the record.
Obviously, he is a self-hating straight man.

The reason this is news if true (and the reason it's important to get it out if it is true) is that the level of repression, denial, and mental illness required for Mehlman to operate in that context if he is gay is truly staggering. It's dangerous to have someone that mentally ill in a position of authority -- not because he's gay (if he is) but because of the self-hatred that reveals.
The larger story is the general level of mental illness and repression on the right.
They hate others because they hate themselves.

The reason this is news if true (and the reason it's important to get it out if it is true) is that the level of repression, denial, and mental illness required for Mehlman to operate in that context if he is gay is truly staggering.
Its actually not any greater than the level of repression, denial, and mental illness required of any high level Bush appointee, particularly in the National Security and Foreign Policy arenas, and those selections probably represent a more readily understood direct danger to a greater number of American lives than Mehlman does.
Really, of Goss as DCI, Rice as SoS, and Mehlman as RNC chair, I think the latter is the least significant, the least imminently dangerous, and the least easy to create a compelling narrative for the average American about the danger they pose.
So, both substantively and in terms of crafting political messages, while its fun to joke about whatever (homo-, hetero-, or otherwise) sexual closet Mehlman is in (and it wouldn't surprise me if he were straight and the Reps were deliberately fueling the rumors) ought to be about the last thing about this administration we are spending effort and time and communcicating.

Mehlman is either straight... or a walking hypocrisy. We go after him with everything, because God knows that's what they do to our guys ever' damn time.
And... Lieberman is to the Democratic leadership as that loud woman who witnesses an accident and is interviewed on the local news is to the entire metro traffic pattern -- completely irrelevant, but he's the one they've got on TV.

The wounded man shot is top of Google right now:
US Military Probes Shooting of Iraqi in Falluja
Reuters - 45 minutes ago
The US military has begun an investigation into possible war crimes after a television pool report by NBC showed a Marine shooting dead a wounded and unarmed Iraqi in a Falluja mosque, officials said on Monday.
Sad thing is stuff like this has been happening for several days. Story I saw yesterday had our guys throwing gernades into a school before entering. Blew the building up, but there wasn't anyone there. They are working under the assumption that everyone left in town is there to fight. They are mistaken.

Way OT, but has anyone been watching Richard Pearle's appearances tonight (NewsHour, Hardball). He seems to be spouting some sort of hagiographic lines about Colin Powell. Wasn't he one of Powell's critics?
And what has put John McCain so deep into Bush's pocket? I don't get it. He was almost ranting about the CIA today--and the people being dumped overboard are not the ones responsible for the missed cues about 9/11 or who cooked the evidence for Iraq.

Maybe McCain is on some sort of medication that alters his perception of reality and keeps him going off the deep end. Seriously, after what he went through in Vietnam, wouldn't it be possible? And that it affects his judgment now?

Reuters - 45 minutes ago
The US military has begun an investigation into possible war crimes after a television pool report by NBC showed a Marine shooting dead a wounded and unarmed Iraqi in a Falluja mosque, officials said on Monday.
was watching anderson cooper tonight (who i normally think is a decent guy and decent journalist)... and they show the video of the marines walking up to the wounded iraqis, then they freeze it and the gunfire sounds (with cooper cutting in to say they froze it because it was too graphic)...
and then... he says, to jaime macintyre, who's on commenting: "Just so we're clear, the people who were shot were not the ones who were in the foreground of the video, right? they were actually in the background where we could barely see as the video rolled forward towards the shooting"
and then mcintryre goes "That's absolutely right, anderson. the man who was shot was not in the foreground."
are they fucking insane? so now getting blown away is more okay if you're in the background of a video, but less okay if you're in the foreground?

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The U.S. military has begun an investigation into possible war crimes after a television pool report by NBC showed a Marine shooting dead a wounded and unarmed Iraqi in a Falluja mosque, officials said on Monday.
The Iraqi was one of five wounded left in the mosque after Marines fought their way in on Friday and Saturday. The U.S. military has accused insurgents in Iraq of using mosques to launch attacks against American forces.
U.S. forces, along with Iraqi government troops, launched an offensive one week ago on Falluja, and have gained overall control of the formerly rebel-held city, although scattered resistance remains.
Maj. Douglas Powell, a Marine Corps spokesman at the Pentagon, said the investigation, being conducted by the Naval Criminal Investigative Service, focused on "possible law of war violations" by U.S. Marines.
The pool report by NBC correspondent Kevin Sites said the mosque had been used by insurgents to attack U.S. forces, who stormed it and an adjacent building, killing 10 militants and wounding the five.
Sites said the wounded had been left in the mosque for others to pick up and move to the rear for treatment. No reason was given why that had not happened.
A second group of Marines entered the mosque on Saturday after reports it had been reoccupied. Footage from the embedded television crew showed the five still in the mosque, although several appeared to be already close to death, Sites said.
He said one Marine noticed one of the prisoners was still breathing.
A Marine can be heard saying on the pool footage provided to Reuters Television: "He's f***ing faking he's dead. He faking he's f***ing dead."
"The Marine then raises his rifle and fires into the man's head. The pictures are too graphic for us to broadcast," Sites said. No images of the shooting were shown in the footage provided to Reuters.
The report said the Marine had returned to duty after being shot in the face a day earlier.
Sites said the shot prisoner "did not appear to be armed or threatening in any way."

Hey, I know what they'll do. Mehlman and Rice will get married and kill two (rumor) birds with one stone. That should comfort you. /major snark
The saddest thing about the Fallujah shooting is that you know there would be no investigation into "war crimes" if it hadn't been caught on film.
You just know there's stuff like that going on all over Fallujah, but since there's no video, as far as Americans are concerned, it didn't happen.
The Iraquis will remember it, though. Count on that.

Fallujah is a war crime. Everything else that happens is more war crimes.
But Fallujah has been one big war crime. IN the first place, it was all retaliation over the deaths of 4 contractors/mercenaries. I"m sure the resistance grew as the United States continued to attack. And attack.

And, spare me the crap about his private life.
Well, most everyone else is, but I won't. You know why? Because it is his private life. If our side believes in the principle that people should be treated equally regardless of sexual orientation, then don't make it an issue in re Ken Mehlman. You're just battling his (alleged) hypocrisy with your own, and down the drain we go.
If you believe (as I do) that the Dems fared poorly in large part because of the lack of a coherent, positive message, then maybe we should spend our energies enhancing the development of such a message. Go take another look at Obama's convention speech--that's the starting point.
If, however, the goal here is merely to provide red meat for our hyenas, I guess those of us looking for solutions rather than amusingly snarky descriptions of the problem should bow out and let the remainder fight over the gristle.

Kevin Sites:
Staff Sgt. Terry Mcelwain of Burden, Kansas is pissed. He grabs the bazooka-like AT-4 rocket launcher from the back of another humvee. It's fire trail zips into the now smoking building. Mcelwain wants Weapons Company to fire a tow missile into it as well, but low hanging electrical wires make it impossible -- so he calls up the tanks instead.
Two Abrams lumber toward the target. They stop and fire their main guns in unison. The explosion shakes the street. But the Marines aren't done yet.
They pour in more rounds from 50 caliber machine guns and their M16's.
But as the unit moves past the building, going from east to west, another RPG explodes behind them, then a third. More casualties. A Navy Corpsman cut the pants leg off one of the injured and wraps a guaze dressing around the bleeding wound while another Marine covers with a 249-SAW (squad Assault Weapon). But regardless of how much firepower the Marines bring to bear -- they can't seem to silence this phantom enemy, which continues to fire on them from the rear.
Then insurgent snipers begin firing in front of the Marines as well. One round pierces the Kevlar helmet a twenty-year old Mark 19 gunner -- in my vehicle. He is badly wounded. He's put in a canvas stretcher and six Marines run through the streets carrying him to a waiting military ambulance.
Shortly after -- another RPG round hits a humvee, but doesn't explode. The Marines are rattled but uninjured. A Marine who has caught shrapnel in the face is led to the safety of an empty storefront -- his eyes bandaged shut -- his hands outstretched -- probing the air in front of him.
The Marines know they are being hunted. Boxed from the east and the west in a treacherous kill zone by an enemy they can feel -- but can't see. Their superior firepower is checked by the insurgent's knowledge of the city -- their cunning in using blind alleyways and the crooks and crannies of buildings to pick off the Marines.
The gun battle continues late into the night -- eventually an AC-130 gunship is called in and strafes Elizabeth Street with its mini guns. With eight of their men wounded--it is a bloody and disappointing start for the Marines -- and a reminder that to win the battle for Falluja -- they will likely have to fight as they did today block by block, street by street.

Homophobia is alive and kickin' at Eschaton.

Actually, we're the "homophiles" in this argument.
We love Ken. On the other hand, people in the Republican party hate Ken.
They want to destroy Ken for good measure, they don't want to wait around for God to judge, like the Bible says. (Just in case God's a "librul" and doesn't have the right idea)
Not only is Ken not welcome in their churches, he is not welcome in their party, and he is especially not welcome in their country. They want to amend the Constitution so the Equal Protection Clause no longer applies to him.
Eschatonians are pretty magnanimous in trying to protect Ken's constitutional rights and freedoms, in spite of the fact he's a Rethuglican asshole, dontcha think?

How to improve the Demorcrat party:
1. Overturn Roe v. Wade
2. Get rid of Habeas Corpus
3. Outlaw all parties except the glorius GOP
4. Have Rupert buy CBS, NBC and ABC
5. Send all registered Democrats to fight in Iraq (we need them to do something productive).
6. Establish mental health tests for all citizens and enforce treatment.

And what has put John McCain so deep into Bush's pocket? I don't get it. He was almost ranting about the CIA today--and the people being dumped overboard are not the ones responsible for the missed cues about 9/11 or who cooked the evidence for Iraq.

kerry and establishment dems trashing dean. after all the work he did for them during the campaign:
Kerry is not behind Shaheen right now, he's behind Vilsack (not that he wouldn't turn to her if Vilsack dropped out). As I stated earlier, it's mostly a "Stop Dean" movement that Kerry is leading the charge on from behind the scenes. And yes, Kerry does have that $45M leftover from the campaign that he's not ready to handover to the DNC at this time-- why not?
this is not principled behavior. this is not what a man of honor and character does.

Private life...Heh
Like the private life of Bill Clinton? Or the private life of Alex Polier who was the target of vicious right wing gossip a la Drudge for some made-up affair with John Kerry? Or the private life of Sidney Blumenthal who sued Drudge for libel after being falsely accused of being a spouse batterer but had to give up his court fight for lack of funds, because Drudge's scumbag "angels" like Scaife and his deep pockets were paying for Drudge's attorneys?
Playing nice with republicans will get you nothing but a knife in the back.
That's the way it is. So, they bring a knife to a fight, you'd better damn well have a gun - because this is the only language these people speak.

OFF TOPIC
John Ashcroft's letter of resignation was written on Nov. 2.
That's election day.
Ashcroft knew Bush had won re-election before the votes had been cast and counted. The content of the letter makes that much obvious.
If I were a suspicious person by nature, I might want to ask how, exactly, did John Ashcroft know that Bush had won re-election BEFORE he had won re-election?
If I were a suspicious person . . .

IAAR: Actually, not everybody gloats. Some people just take the win and go about their business. Gloaters tend to be people who felt insecure about their chances of winning and therefore feel overly-vindicated even when they only win by a small margin. Gloating after winning the World Series on an eight game winning streak is justified, gloating after winning the series in the seventh game by one run with questionable calls by the umpires, well, that just makes you ridiculous.

Until it's time to clean up the messes and pay the bills. Then even the people in Kansas will beg for the Democrats to clean the Augean stables Republicans have made. And at the rate you folks are spending your 3% "man-date", that could start as early as 2006.

I have to tell you that on Hannity's radio show, btw, he actually said that he was going to Phoenix (sometime in the near future) and that they were going to have a "gloat" fest. What a nice, moral, upstanding citizen that Sean is.

For as long as I live I will look back and actually feel, viscerally, my disgust for this administration. Like you can remember the smell of summer rain when you were a child, or exactly what you were feeling when your favorite song was playing as a teenager, I will always be flooded with an intense sensation of disgust -- this I will never cease to feel until the day I die.
Funny, my feelings about Nixon and Reagan have long since dissipated. Never with this one.

This was written a few days before the election but is a scary look at the real Republican agenda, worth reading now.
In fact, what is at stake in the election is not the future of Roe v. Wade, school prayer, or any of the culture-war issues that have inflamed the country since the 1970s. The left may be hesitant to acknowledge it, but the Rehnquist Court has largely sided with liberals rather than conservatives in these cultural battles. It has done so because liberals have won in the court of public opinion. And the chance of either Bush or Kerry getting through the Senate justices who want to revisit those well-settled precedents is low.

I'm happy right here in Kansas.
Good, stay there. As a blue stater who pays more in federal taxes than we get back, we'd like to cancel our "red state welfare" that keeps you above the level of a dustbowl.
You're so "self-sufficient" and all, I'm sure you'll be glad to be free once and for all of all the vile money of godless, elite, gay-loving blue state heathens who carry your sorry-assed state's economy.
Oh, and good luck. Maybe you can read "Little House on the Prairie" for some tips on how to run your state.

jsg - & Vicki - yep. I"m beginning to think this term might make the last one look "moderate."
They are going to destory themselves at the pace they are going. They fooled the country into thinking their way is best, now they are dumping the intellect that allowed them to stagger along. Now they are flying solo. It is going to be messy as hell, but they are about to end up trying to deadstick this admin into a landing and they really don't have the stuff to do it.
However, we should be making sure we are not under them when they hit.
I wouldn't stand there, you might want to move over a bit. Yep thats better. Oh and duck.

jsg, yeah, I noticed that. I really believe that we are at a watershed, and that the sheeple are being misled by one of two factions: the Neocons, or the dominionists. I think we're in deep trouble. And I'm worried to the point where I am making wholesale lifestyle changes. In addition to not spending, I'm looking for a new job and I want to liquidate my finances.
I'm not a doomsayer, not by a long shot, and not usually. But we are moving from bad to worse.
It's going to be a wild ride, I'm afraid.

"Rewarding Incompetence: Brought to you by Bush/Cheney"
So Condi gets Colin's job, Hadley get's Condi's job...who gets his job? They're just shifting people up. Eventually there will be one empty entry-level job that there won't be anyone to shift into, so they'll hire from outside. Probably give it to Simone Ledeen.

I realize that low-ball, gutter politics may be the only thing they understand. It's one of the things we dislike them for. So why stoop to it? Again, "outing" Mehlman (which is what Atrios is doing -- I hadn't heard these rumors before, so Atrios "outed" him to me, as well as most others here, I'll bet) is nothing more than combatting an alleged hypocrisy (because we don't know if he's gay) with a very actual hypocrisy. What's the logic here? That we should abandon our principles so that we can assert them later? That's nothing more than a quest for power for its own sake, IMO.

Well, most everyone else is, but I won't. You know why? Because it is his private life. If our side believes in the principle that people should be treated equally regardless of sexual orientation, then don't make it an issue in re Ken Mehlman.
Let us suppose that a party (Party R) proposes and passes amendments in several states to forbid Jews from marrying non-Jews, or to forbid Jews from holding public office, or from being school-teachers, or whatever. Their opposition party (Party D) supports equal treatment of everyone, no matter what religion or ethnicity they are.
Let us further suppose that we found out some of the people working for Party R are, in fact, Jewish.
Is it somehow hypocritical (or even anti-semitic) to simply point out, in this case, that some of the people working for Party R are Jewish?

Actually, I've seen the "red states produce" all the food meme on a couple websites. I wonder how valid this is...from what I understand, most of the food Americans get from the grocery stores comes from Latin America (particularly your veggies) or overseas. Most of the beef comes from here, though, and we all know how safe and drug-free (and cow-part free) that is.
Oddly enough, unless things have changed drastically, most of the foodstuffs "America's Breadbasket" produces goes - you guessed it - overseas. And that's not counting the mountains and mountains of grain and wheat we got in silos and storage, just rotting away so as to keep prices up. And then there's the massive subsidies the corn lobby gets even though corn is in just about every food you eat, one way or another, and the human body really doesn't digest well in such mass quantities.
Hell, maybe it wouldn't be such a bad idea if we didn't get what food we got from the Heartland. Set up some nice progressive organic-minded farming legislature, cut back on pesticides and herbicides - which are mostly unneccessary - cut out growth hormones in cattle and fowl, as well as rendering animals into cattle feed. Shit, might not be a bad idea at all.

Okay, we'll keep our beef, chickens, corn, and water.
My father (in SW Pa) would grow enough vegetables on a couple of acres to keep us largely out of the grocery stores. Start a garden as a political action. (That's not why my father did, though.)

And actually, if I recall correctly, Southern California gets the bulk of its water from Northern California. One of the Left Coast groovies can clear this up if I'm mistaken, though, but I believe there was also some hullabaloo about getting it from British Columbia and not wanting to pay for it.
Which brings up another question: if you're gung-ho about cutting off agua to those hated libruls in El Lay and points north, are you also willing to cut the spigot off your ideological compadres in Orange County and the like?
And one should note that right here in Red State Georgia, the water's so goddamn nasty it's not even funny. Frankly, drinking water all over the country - particularly in towns with populations above 15,000 - isn't fit for human consumption. Someone had the brilliant idea to ease regulations on water cleanliness and dumping proceedures. Why, you ask? Why, profit, of course, which makes it all a-okay.

It's really sad to see such a lack of geographical knowledge. As if New York is all Manhattan. As if there wasn't agriculture in other blue states. Not to mention a lack of historical knowledge.
It was tried once before, and the red states lost then, too, even though they thought the blue states would starve without them.
It helps to know a little about a few things.

But it wouldn't happen because blue states need our food.
I Am a Republican
You think blue states need your food with all the agricultural imports we have coming in from Chile and Peru? What a dumbass you are.
And what's sick is that they're cheaper than what you sell - the only thing bailing your sorry Kansan ass out is farm subsidies. And those are gone, remember?? After all, you're too "self-sufficient" to need blue state bailouts.
And without our ports, your grain can rot in the silos. Where's your market? Other red states? (Thanks, it's the best laugh I've had all day)
Plus, I live in a nice blue state where we grow corn and wheat and apples and onions and all that nice stuff - we don't need you or your red state "values". Or anything you have to sell.
We don't need Kansas at all. We really don't.
Bye. Enjoy your "Little House on the Prairie" and all your family values - hope ya don't starve too quick.

Is it somehow hypocritical (or even anti-semitic) to simply point out, in this case, that some of the people working for Party R are Jewish?
We're talking about one person who has chosen not to discuss his sexual orientation. Presumably we're past the point when someone would feel compelled to keep their Jewishness a secret, so I don't think your parallel applies here.
Look, if Mehlman is gay and comes out, then by all means we can hammer him for being hypocritical. His answer might be that his sexual orientation doesn't trump his belief in conservative policies in re the economy or foreign affairs. So be it.

We do, but that's not what the red staters profess to want. They want "moral values" if their kids starve and their wives die in childbirth.
We "blue staters" are just a bunch of intellectual elites and godless heathens, which is why we're so concerned about the Rust Belt and unemployed factory workers and Wal-Marts shutting down local businesses and mining companies that blow the tops off of mountains in West Virginia and put miners in unsafe working conditions and pollute the air and groundwater.
You can't save people who don't want to be saved - it's like trying to rehabilitate an alcoholic who doesn't think they have a problem.
When red states get tired of those conditions, when they hit rock bottom and figure out that the Republicans don't give a shit about them, and they might be ready to vote for a change.
Til then, it's foolish to try to convince someone wants a Bible more than bread on the table and a steady paycheck that he's hungry.

Gay or not, how anyone can accept the Republican Party's anti-gay agenda in 2004 is beyond me. It's pretty much spelled out. If you are trying to keep someone from having the same rights as everyone else, you're exclusive, not inclusive.
I so hope the party implodes, doing serious damage to itself. I know it will. It has to. It is off on a wild path right now. Memo to Republican Party: You can't keep fucking with people ~ eventually, the people will have had enough, and it's your ass in the frying pan.

I don't know, maybe it's personal experience. I'm straight, but have often been thought of as gay. Or, the way I like to put it, some straight people think I might be gay, but most gay people are pretty sure I'm straight. It used to bother me and I'd get defensive, but now I'm 38 and don't care. In fact, I find it amusing. Maybe that's where Mehlman is at. Could be he's decided he's had to explain his sexual orientation enough for one lifetime, and just isn't going to do it anymore. If so, I say good for him.
Ugh, all this Mehlman-defending is getting to me. He is, after all, a mealy-mouthed marionette dweeb!!

I agree. Make them hold everyone on their side to the same standards as they're holding people who are not them.

They pronounced their 'moral stance.' All we have to do is make them live up to it.

You be the flower and I’ll be the bumble bee
Oh she loves me oops she loves me not
People say you’re cold but I think you’re hot
Oh, Condi, Condi
Oh, Condi, Condi
Oh Condi, Condi I’m talkin’ to you girl
What’s it gonna hurt come on give me a whirl
Shake your body now let me see you go
One time for me Oh Condi I love you so
Skank for me Condi show me what you got
They say you’re too uptight I say you’re not
Dance around me spinnin’ like a top
Oh Condi Condi Condi don’t ever stop
Oh Condi Condi Can’t you hear me call
I’m standin’ in the street outside your garden wall
Pocketful of money belly full of wine
Condi in my heart and romance on my mind
Listen to me Condi don’t be afraid
I come here tonight to chase your blues away
I’ll never hurt you I’ll treat you right
Oh Condaleeza won’t you come out tonight

I'm a gay Republican.
I am adamantly against outing.
So if Ken Mehlman is outed, I'd be annoyed. But only a teeny, weeny bit annoyed.
You reach a point where enough is enough. Kind of like the point I reached this year when I decided to vote Libertarian.
Mental health tests? That might take away Republican voting rights. Betcha the NRA won't be backing that plan anytime soon.

We are all Americans. Place the blame where it belongs - on the propaganda masters. Quit blaming their victims.
Sorry Tena- they made a deliberate choice. I'm not letting them off the hook.
You're either for illegal war, state sponsored torture and war crimes or you're not. Many of them chose to look the other way because they wanted their tax breaks or other goodies the rethugs were going to give them.
On the other hand, I don't really think it's a red state- blue state thing. I think it's a morally bankrupt thing.

Could be he's decided he's had to explain his sexual orientation enough for one lifetime, and just isn't going to do it anymore.
Yeah right. In the red meat tent, I'm sure he's just refusing to say he's straight on principle.

Come on, Stinky. They didn't all vote for the moron. Not by a long shot.

Enough of them did to put Chimpy back in the White House. Look, it's nice to worry about things like the impact of strip mining and Wal-Mart in West Virginia, but the majority of people there don't give a damn.
You can't save people who don't want to be saved. And believe me, these people don't want to.

Propaganda victims?! This is a little over the top, don't you think?
If someone is really so dumb and "propagandized" to where they won't question authority or the media, what makes you think they're ever going to be swayed by a progressive message, let alone vote for progressive candidates?

it doesn't really matter that he's gay....he's in it for the power and the opportunity to game a system---that transcends sexuality. the gop powers couldn't care less that he's gay....they only care if he can continue to use America's vast resource of stupid people to advance their agenda. and if he is gay....he couldn't possibly care less about the anti-gay stance of the gop....of course, they'll never be able to pass any of the "agenda", and even if some anti-gay legislation does go through....he's certainly set up to buy as much penis as the good lord will allow to fit into his mouth.

Here in Sacramento, sitting between two rivers, organic veggies growing in my back yard, corn and rice a couple miles down the road, grapes, melons, fruit orchards, tomatoes, dairies, oh, we're in a world of hurt.
Let's not let the red states use our ports. I'm up for that. They should do fine without them.

I don't know if it's fair to single Ken out. But if there is any outing, it has to wait until he gets the job. Then, maybe some time after that. Like, at least around the next election.
Maybe he's not. There are a lot of prominent Republicans who are "married to their job" and never married. Like Karl Rove. And Condi Rice. In Rove's case, it's really interesting, because he's obsessed with insinuating that the opposition is gay. Of course, being married isn't necessarily an indication of anything. Take Jim McGreevey. Or maybe even a guy that currently lives at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave., and exported his rumor baggage to an ambassadorship to Poland. Don't forget Poland, indeed.

Just about every raging homophobe I went to highschool with has ended up working for the degenerate developer in the next town who happens to be gay. They are known as "x's boys". Such stories you hear of parties where they wear only tool belts.
Out the fascists, out them and their close relatives and friends. Let them get burned first. It's what they've got planned for the rest of us.

It is an excellent idea. And while we're at it taunting them over the Republican's dropping overturning Roe wouldn't hurt either.
Roe is gone, either overtly or covertly but it's gone. We've got to make them do it in the way that will cause them the most damage either with the general public or with the thumper tirebiters.

Mary, you're obviously unaware of Condi Rice and Gwen Ifill.
Karl Rove is a "subject for further research."
Incidentally on another board someone has come up with a perfect term for the anti-abortion crowd: "pro-coathanger"

" This isn't about who Ken Mehlman is or isn't screwing, it's about whether a gay man is going to head the "values" party."
Atrios-
I know you're being ironic but still the formulation of that sentence cedes a little to much to the Republicans for my taste.
How about:
'the alleged, self-proclaimed, purported party of 'values' (which, as we all know, simply means that John Ashcroft is sticking his nose in your business)'
Less punchy- but giving no ground to the fundies!

To all good Republicans, I'm warming to pay-for-what-you-get. We know you hate the poor sponging off you for their schools and such, so I'll make you a proposition. I'll go along with abolishing welfare, food stamps and all that if you'll pay for all the foreign wars, the weapons systems, the bases, which you habitually vote for. (And profit from) Let's go all the way with privitazation. Private companies should run the armed forces. The Enron Marines, the WallMart Navy. Fine with me as long as you pay. I'll bet they can run the services just as efficiently as the private sector runs our health care system. While we're at it, Republicans tend to live in the suburbs and rural areas. It costs much more to send water, electricity and gas those extra distances, so it will be fair if your utility bills go up markedly. Roads, too. I assume you will pay for the bulk of highway construction from now on. I'm sure we can find many other things, like government disaster loans. None should go to Republicans who live in Florida. Afterall, they asked for hurricanes, living so close to the coasts. Besides, Republicans don't ask for government help. I'm liking this idea, I'm sure we can work it out.
