How Tom DeLay got the nickname “The Hammer” is beyond me because everyone says he’s such a nice, lovable, thoughtful, gracious guy who hates confrontations and looks out for House members with young children. House Republicans voted to change the accountability rules to protect Tom Delay out of love, not fear. But they hated to do it and many had the courage to later secretly agree with those few Republicans who voted against changing the rule.
Maybe this all means something.

- House and Senate negotiators have tucked a potentially far-reaching anti-abortion provision into a $388 billion must-pass spending bill, complicating plans for Congress to wrap up its business and adjourn for the year.
The abortion language would bar federal, state and local agencies from withholding taxpayer money from health care providers that refuse to provide or pay for abortions or refuse to offer abortion counseling or referrals.
The provision could affect millions of American women, according to Senator Barbara Boxer, Democrat of California, who warned Friday that she would use procedural tactics to slow Senate business to a crawl if the language was not altered.
"I am willing to stand on my feet and slow this thing down," Ms. Boxer said. "Everyone wants to go home, I know that, and I know I will not win a popularity contest in the Senate. But they should not be doing this. On a huge spending bill they're writing law, and they're taking away rights from women."

From the NY Times
"Groundhog Day
Stop us if you've heard this one before. The Bush administration creates a false sense of urgency about a nuclear menace from a Middle Eastern country. Hard-liners talk about that country's connections to terrorists. They portray European diplomatic efforts to defuse tensions as a feckless attempt to appease a rogue nation whose word can never be trusted anyway. Secretary of State Colin Powell makes ominous-sounding warnings about new intelligence, which turns out to be dubious."
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

They hate us for our freedom:
Mr. Daschle is the first Senate party leader in more than half a century to lose a re-election campaign. His emotional talk, in which he also urged his colleagues to find "common ground," was attended by nearly all of the Senate's Democrats, who gathered him in their arms and hugged him afterward.
"Our country and way of life is under attack. A small group of religious extremists is set on destroying the America we all know and love. They loathe us for our very freedoms. They despise the liberty we enjoy in this country. They have perverted their religion, a beautiful faith that preaches love and peace, and turned it into a jihad against the infidel. They have ignored the precepts of tolerance and respect espoused by their most holy prophets. They have fashioned their beliefs into a weapon of hate against the very principles upon which America was founded."

This abortion amendment sounds kind of inocuous. But it means that millions of women will be denied access to safe, legal abortions. With the economy tanking and birth control becoming increasingly mor difficult to obtain, women will once again become slaves to their husbands will.
May be time to cross our legs ladies, and deny men the possibility of becoming addicted to erototoxins.

Missed yesterday - so wanted to put my two cents in about Kerry's statement - WAY COOL!
This is what I had hoped he would do as president - capitalize on the momentum and commitment of his broad base (and the power of the internet) to rally "the people" to help pass decent (one could hope progressive)legislation.
Too those who say too little, too late I humbly (ok, not) reply that he needed to stay silent as he gathered enough facts about the voting irregularities. He did this for a lot of good reasons well detailed elsewhere. We can yell and scream about stolen elections here in the anonymity of the blog with impunity - he's got a slighter higher standard to uphold. I just gotta say my heart soared when I read, "Regardless of the outcome of this election. . ." He's conceded bupkiss (sp?)
To those who complain that he should have launched a bigger battle, I say WAKE UP - he's testing the waters of his support with a no-brainer. If we can't back him on this, than any of us who claimed to "have his back" better take a good long look in the mirror.
He's not perfect, but he's damn good. I admit to little tolerance for those who have turned their backs on him in the short matter of 20 days. Ferchrissakes people.
For anyone that's read this long - thank for the opportunity to vent - I know I'm talking to a slim minority, just needed to get that off my chest.
Oh, and good morning!

Typical for the left to not say a word about the racist comments about Condi Rice.
Typical of a wingnut troll to not even read the article it links to? It listed several "liberals" who came out directly against the radio twit's comment. (And if it wants to start holding up radio assholes as emblematic of their respective political parties, it's going to be defending the execrable bigotry of a zillion right-wingnuts).
For example: NAACP president Kweisi Mfume said people who make such remarks "are just as bad as those who hide under sheets and burn crosses." Mfume said Rice is "an example of how far hard work, education and determination can take one to new heights."
Madison Mayor Dave Cieslewicz called Sylvester's remarks "racially insensitive," while Democratic Sen. Russ Feingold said he joined all Wisconsin residents in rejecting the statements.

Barndog - not relevant. The bill incorporates 9 of the total 13 funding bills for the entire government - which includes, um, everything.
Additionally, it looks very much as tho the House has effectively taken over the Senate - the Senate is actually obeying the instructions of the House in inserting, at the very last second, the anti-abortion provision.
This -is- the anti-women bullet that the right wing has been trying to launch. It -is- in exactly the right bill to create chaos.

most black folks i know, including my relatives, think condi's a house nigga.
she's a sellout, no doubt. Bush loves to have a couple of blacks and hispanics around him so he can safely ignore the struggles of most blacks and hispanics in this nation.
i found out last night that my NC brother voted for Bush because he got a measly couple hundred bucks in tax refund two years ago. Now, a couple of hundred bucks for him is not so measley - in fact, it's the difference between making the rent or not. But in return for this pittance his kids will have no health care, his state is going bankrupt, the schools are a f-in mess, and his neighbors and buddies are being shipped off to Iraq.
Next time I see him, I'm going to ask if he enjoyed that refund. And what he thinks about the super-wealthy getting an even larger one while our states go bankrupt and our economy ges down the toilet.
I can't blame him, he's a typical Bush voter. faith-based, marginally educated and working long hours for too damn long to pay attention to the details or think too hard.

I can't blame him, he's a typical Bush voter. faith-based, marginally educated and working long hours for too damn long to pay attention to the details or think too hard.

if the repukelican have their way, all that will mean is that the military machine grinds to a halt - could be a good thing.

It IS relevant. I've been searching all morning for the numbers I'd seen somewhere else on that state pork amount. It's BIG.
And yes, the abortion bullshit is going to create a lovely uproar.
Too bad there isn't a media to cover it worth a shit, beside the blogs of course.
The SCUM will pick it up maybe a couple of weeks from now.

Race has nothing to do with the abhorence with which I view Dr. Rice. It does, however, have everything to do with why she is in the position she is in. Now w/Bill Moyers last night presented the most comprehensive, concentrated, damning indictment of her possible, which had nothing at all to do with her race; only her apparently in-born mendacity, her utter inability to tell truth, or admit her own incompetence.

Wow, my newspaper has the headline, "America Again The Target of Hate" about the Chilean protests. It shows a picture of a flag being burned and a man with a towel around his face. In the AP story it says, "some rioters expressed sympathy with the insurgents in Fallujah." They show a picture that says nothing about insurgents. WTF? Why would you say that? Maybe they are concerned with unnecessary civilian deaths in Fallujah. The pro-bush clowning in the media is creating the divisiveness in this world.

Barndog - it's simply that it's a little late to be arguing about the content of the Omnibus Bill, not that the contents aren't excessive.
"The four bills that already passed fund defense, homeland security, the District of Columbia and military construction in the 2005 fiscal year."
In other words, killing this bill or forcing it thru ensures that the only elements of the Government that are funded are the military and enforcement arms.

Anyone notice the AP article today on the AP's web page does'nt say a word about the abortion amendment. All it does say is how proud the rethugs are over its "fiscal responsibility",and how the dems will "grudgingly approve" it.

Kent - no theorizing involved. When asked by a Baltimore Sun reporter at his father's 1988 nominating convention what he and his father talk about when alone together, our Dear and Moral Leader, embodiment of the Christ Himself, said, "Pussy." With that smirk on his face, of course. Which can only mean one of two things: Poppy and W refer to their wives as "pussy", a charming way to refer to one's life partner, as merely a set of genitals, or they were talking about illicit, adulterous affairs.

I must admit that the ability to attach hidden legislation or "riders" to bills being considered is a curious loophole which I can't believe the Framers of the Constitution envisioned. While I'm certain both sides have taken advantage of this loophole, it's clear the Rethugs have elevated the use of riders to an art form (remember the Ely Lily lawsuit protection clause in the Homeland security bill?). Lord only knows what kind of reprehensible crap has been passed into law well under the radar screen of the People. No doubt the Democrats (at least the ones with a conscience AND balls) will attempt to fillibuster until this clause is stricken from the bill and in doing so, will give the GOP an opportunity to say "See, we wanted to appropriate money to support the troops, but those no good Liberal Democrats voted against it!". Watch for that meme to materialize just in time for the '06 midterm elections.

Someone shut Scott Simon up. Man, a guy marries a woman 20 years his junior and he turns into a complete idiot.
He went a long way toward losing me by consistently buying Really Bad Chardonnay when he/they'd be in shopping. I can forgive a lot, but that really calls a man's character into question.
Haven't seen 'em since they adopted the kid, but I doubt that's improved their wine preferences.
And I used to really, really love a lot of his NPR segments back before that ill-advised foray into network teevee.

Waiting to hear
Before the election John Kerry had a plan for everything from nuclear war to dandruff. He said these plans were essential to world peace and prosperity, but they were to be disclosed only after the election. With the election over, doesn't Kerry now owe us the revelation of these world-saving plans? This vital information may help our elected leaders, and we could finally know what we're missing.

A violent day in Iraq. Going into a holy mosque during Friday prayers was
a bad idea.
AP:
BAGHDAD, Iraq - Baghdad exploded in violence Saturday, as insurgents attacked a U.S. patrol and a police station, assassinated four government employees and detonated several bombs. One American soldier was killed and nine were wounded during clashes that also left three Iraqi troops and a police officer dead.
Some of the heaviest violence came in Azamiyah, a largely Sunni Arab district of Baghdad where a day earlier U.S. troops raided the capital's main Sunni mosque. Shops were in flames, and a U.S. Humvee burned, with the body of what appeared to be its driver inside.
U.S. forces and insurgents also battled in the Sunni Triangle city of Ramadi, where clashes have been seen almost daily. Nine Iraqis were killed and five wounded in Saturday's fighting, hospital officials said.

I have been listening all week to hear someone point out the one, clear and unambiguous fact about her, that she is the worst National Security Advisor in history and that thousands of people were dead because of her "work". I love how these seem to have this attitude of: "You will be assimilated; resistance is futile."
Wrong on both counts...SO wrong on both counts!

You would be funny too except for the fact that I don't find the destruction of my country by YOUR asshole of a president very amusing.
Why don't you get a fucking life?

Right now, as I type, the Senate is debating a massive omnibus spending bill. Notable for two things: one, Senator McCain is making fun of the Norwegian American Association. And second, because of one strange provision that was added to the bill.
Apparently, a last-minute provision was snuck in that would allow the Appropriations Committee Chairman to appoint an agent (anyone he wants, staff, not staff; law enforcement, not law enforcement) who would have unlimited access to all IRS facilities in the country, and unlimited access to tax returns and tax return information. Moreover, it contains language that would (arguably, at least) allow the "agent" to publish that information without penalty.
The worst part is how the section got added. Sen. Stevens alleges that it occurred as a result of an agreement between two staffers. One approached the other and told him to add the language, and that it had been approved by the "head office."
Now there's a bitter argument about whether to pass the law (already passed by the House) and send it on to the President for signature containing the language, or to hold off on passing the bill until the House comes back in to session and can remove the language.
What the Hell is going on in our legislature? Why is it possible for staffers to add Nixon-esque language into our laws and very nearly have no one catch it? Jeez. This is the sort of thing that seems a detail, but that people really just should know about.

George W. Bush is good christian man of integrity and that's why he won the election.
Integrity is about the last thing he has. Besides, if he's such a man of integrity, how come he hires that trickster Karl Rove to manage his political life?

Deven - it is a travesty, but this is the way that the House Republicans have operated. And I will include even the honest Republicans like Chris Shays, because they haven't been out making the talk show circuit blasting House leadership for this type of last minute crap.
So does the Democratic House Membership keep a blog where they record for public posterity the times where they are locked out or bills dragged in without preview or non-germane riders are added?
