Blinders on, baby. Was that in 1993, when the first World Trade Center bombing occurred? Or later in the Clinton years - USS Cole...embassy bombings in Africa. You and Bill may have been enjoying your decade-long pajama party, but the Muslims were plotting to kill us all.
the economy was growing
And dot.coms were crashing and Enron was cooking the books with inadequate oversight from the Clinton administration.
and we had a federal surplus
Which, thank God, the Republicans kept Clinton from pissing away on entitlements bribery. Otherwise the 9/11 attacks and the wars brought on by Islamists would have us even deeper in the hole today.
If the marines in Fallujah weren't such fucking cowards, we'd have won this thing by now.

Ah yes. That was Charles Krauthammer, god's gift to modern psychiatry, spewing his usual vomit about how it was the dot.com boom of the 90's which drove the economy, and Clinton was just lucky enough to be President at the time. In Krauthammer's opinon, Clinton did absolutely nothing.

When I first saw Howie the Ho's comments, I wondered if he was implying that the Clinton Library held someone hostage and forced them to televise the opening?
We have a glimpse at a strange universe that has its hq inside the beltway. On the day of the opening, WaPo had an editorial bringing up again the pardons. 1100 Americans dead, 100,000 Iraqis dead for bogus reasons, and Len Downie, Fred Hiatt, et al, are silent. The aging boy wonder Booby Woodward regales all with tales of Bush at War, but still that war is not a threat. Marc Rich is a threat!

From NYT this morning. They've added language to the Omnibus Spending Bill (to be voted on this morning). How do we tell them what we think on a Saturday? I tried calling my senators' offices, but just get a recording telling me they're only there m-f. Here's what they're sticking in:
Quote:
The abortion language would bar federal, state and local agencies from withholding taxpayer money from health care providers that refuse to provide or pay for abortions or refuse to offer abortion counseling or referrals....
The provision could affect millions of American women, according to Senator Barbara Boxer, Democrat of California, who warned Friday that she would use procedural tactics to slow Senate business to a crawl if the language was not altered.
"I am willing to stand on my feet and slow this thing down," Ms. Boxer said. "Everyone wants to go home, I know that, and I know I will not win a popularity contest in the Senate. But they should not be doing this. On a huge spending bill they're writing law, and they're taking away rights from women."
End quote
We have to stop moaning and groaning about our losses and develop a better Rapid Response capability to stop shit like this.

gene214, it wasn't Krauthammer that was on during the time I kept on trying to tune in to see some coverage. It was some non-descript hack, who wasn't even very good at it, who kept repeating the tired old shit we've all heard before. A huge part of it related to issues affecting the election so it was even more pointless.
Clinton and others were giving speeches to thousands of people at an event important enough to attract all of the ex-presidents and other dignitaries, a very short time after a momentous election, and I had to listen to this shithead hack talking his shit.

President Bush 41 was a one-term President sandwiched between the infinitely more popular and consequential Ronald Reagan and his successor, the infinitely more popular and consequential Bill Clinton.
Perhaps the biggest difference of all, though, is that the media was a lot different in 1997, when Bush's library opened. In 2004, we've got a whole set of 24-hour news networks, we've got a much wider spread of internet. And we know the media likes to cover Clinton.
Kurtz is just wrong on this one.

Before the election John Kerry had a plan for everything from nuclear war to dandruff. He said these plans were essential to world peace and prosperity, but they were to be disclosed only after the election. With the election over, doesn't Kerry now owe us the revelation of these world-saving plans? This vital information may help our elected leaders, and we could finally know what we're missing.

Wrote my senators about the anti-abortion thing as soon as I read the article this morning (sorry, not a night person, so I didn't see it last night).
Don't most of the Senators and Reps have a thing where you can only contact them if you're a resident of their states? Because if not, I'm going to write to them all. This seems plausible to me.
Kurtz, has he ever shown any incliniation to do the least that he could do in the way of research. Like Bill, "Dr.", Safire he merely has to consult his infallible opinion. Who's going to hold him accountable? CNN? The Wawa Post? Republicans can lie with impunity.
(Nice to see Colin Powell proving how "moderate" he is by floating that trial balloon, huh?)
Robert M. Jeffers
Chris Shays of Ct. is earning his "moderate" cred by going after the UN for Bushco. I wonder how many UN dollars go into his district or how many of his constituents have an income from UN related activities.
Defeat all Republican "moderates" the soiled figleaf over the Republicans' shame.

So your first (bold) entry gives a time of 12:24 a.m....do you really think THAT was live coverage? In fact, none of these examples mention anything at all about hours-long live coverage.
If this is your attempt at a "gotcha!", it's even lamer than usual.

i'm just getting sick of hearing wingers constantly say that it was all due to the dotcom situation and clinton had nothing to do with it
Do you forget that Al Gore invented the internet(s)?
Seriously, a Bush-type administration would have been dead against the internet because of pr0n and FOI and IP issues -- much like they're against a lot of other technologies which don't have anything to do with killing people.

If for no other reason, CNN would have broadcast the Bush library dedication because the current President was there and spoke. Isn't that their usual standard?
But I expect there was a lot less excitement in Houston then than there was in Little Rock this week.

Lexis/Nexis? Which one of the internets is that on? Can't expect a busy journalist to spend time searching through all of those internets.
NYMary I heard that the twins and their SS agents were told they couldn't be seated for the next 4 years at some NYC restaurant. Then the patrons all cheered. Maybe the restaurant heard about their behavior at bars during the Republican convention?

I didn't see the live coverage of Clinton library, but I saw several photos of that bldg. Must say I am not impressed with the architecture. Went too much for that "bridge to the future" thing pointed toward the river and lost a great opportunity to make a major architectural statement.
The way you pay homage to a river is to front to it or back to it (like Kennedy Center in DC), but not going sideways. Now the rightwingers (and the Economist, which Clinton noted) are saying it looks like a trailer house, to bring up the whole trailer trash images tied to Clinton.
Hope this can be rectified when they do some add-ons later.

See, all this excess coverage of the Clinton Library proves the liberal bias of the media! This way they can avoid covering our glorious triumph in Fallujah, where we have broken the back of the insurgency and won the hearts and minds of Sunni Iraq through the simple expedient of destroying their homes and offering to rebuild them, someday, eventually. And not a peep about the President's ground-breaking plans for tax simplification! Damn that liberal media!

NyMary:
I have a radical theory on why Bush didn't lose by ten million votes, and it has to do with warfare.
Simply put:
So long as a non-trivial (or at least a highly-publicized) number of US troops are being essentially held hostage by any US President by being sent off to war, their rellies at home are going to "support the troops" by backing that President -- because if they let themselves believe for a second that their CoC was wrong to do this, then they fear they would snap. But when the troops do come home, their loved ones are now free to worry about other things -- like how far the economy has fallen under that President.
LBJ was a special case that proves the rule. His dragging the South kicking and screaming into the 20th century lost everything below the Mason-Dixon line for him, and his efforts to end the war were sabotaged when Nixon sent Anna Chennault and other folks to Paris to destroy the 1968 Paris peace talks. While Middle America stuck with him, the lefties bolted over the war, and the South bolted over being forced not to lynch black people.
Note than Watergate didn't really get going until after March of 1973 -- the date we officially pulled out of Vietnam.
Note that Bush the Elder's ratings were sky-high throughout Desert Storm -- but dropped once the troops were home.
I submit that if Bush had stopped at Afghanistan, and that if we hadn't invaded Iraq -- or that if we had allowed free elections to happen last year, and then left -- Kerry would have won the 2004 election by five million votes, because people would be willing to hear criticism of the Commander-in-Chief once their boys and girls were safely home.

Claims Arafat died of AIDS
A FORMER speech writer for George W. Bush has claimed Yasser Arafat died of AIDS.
Former presidential aide David Frum, famous for coining the phrase "axis of evil", says the world has shown an astonishingly low level of curiosity about the reasons for Arafat's death.

Mr Frum claimed a memoir of a former Romanian secret policeman who allegedly taped Mr Arafat having sex with a bodyguard was evidence of bisexuality. http://www.heraldsun.news.com.au...mon/story_page/

NYMary,
Me, either. The comparison between those two and the Kerry kids was pretty starck. But I'm sure I'll like the Bush twins better just as soon as J starts teaching inner city preschoolers and notJ starts helping AIDS babies in Africa, as promised during the campaign. I'm sure they'll be starting any day now, since the campaign is over. Really. Any day. Probably right after Thanksgiving. Or maybe right after Xmas. OK, maybe on New Year's Day. Or maybe . . .

You have to wonder how these folks get around seing how their heads are always stuffed into someone else's crotch (for research purposes -- really). Of course who needs facts when the allegations of romanian secret police or czech bartenders will do.
Of course this is probably related to the psy-ops program that included Abu Ghraib.

Hecate, my wife thinks that he's not really a 17-year-old brat but rather a full-blown sociopath. He sees everyone else as a cardboard cutout, so he has no need to wait, be polite, or even recognize that he's being a putz. The world is just in his way, so he pushes through. After all, the rest are just cardboard...

Konopelli,
No kidding! I've taught private and I've taught public, and there's nothing worse than a private sachool student who thinks you're their employee. Of course, this attitude is also part of public education now, in colleges anyway, but it's generally less prevalent.

I know you weren't cheerleading for a guy who can at least keep from showing his ass in public for the most part, the son of course has no such self control.
No offence, but I still have difficulty with the characterization of 41 as a gentleman. Though he is capable of demonstrating a knowledge of decorum.

Maybe it's because the reporters also fondly remember a time when we were at peace, the economy was growing and we had a federal surplus.
a memoir of a former Romanian secret policeman who allegedly taped Mr Arafat having sex with a bodyguard
Let's see, the memoir of a former Romanian secret policemen, who allegedly taped this incident.
Everything about this just reeks of credibility, doesn't it?

Not to mention that Clinton served two terms, while 41 was a one-term washout. Clinton presided over peace and prosperity, while 41 waged a war and presided over a sinking economy. I get to be firts to say ( and join in with me everyone )
kurtz implied there wasn't live coverage. there was live coverage, and non-live coverage and interviews throughout the day.
And Atrios implies that the media prominence of both library dedications was equivalent. What a crock. They are playing the Clinton yawner more than they will Bush's Second Inaugural.
Yes, he will be taking the oath of office again, in case you guys blotted that from your memory as effectively as Kurtz supposedly did in this instance.

NYMary I heard that the twins and their SS agents were told they couldn't be seated for the next 4 years at some NYC restaurant. Then the patrons all cheered. Maybe the restaurant heard about their behavior at bars during the Republican convention?
Hecate
I'd like to know how Rethuglicans can look at the Bush family and keep a straight face claiming Democrats have no moral values.
The Bush twins are out-of-control spoiled white trash drunkards whose mother killed a kid. Their performance at the convention was embarassing - even my mom thought they looked and acted like 14-year olds, not two young women who just graduated from college.
Noelle is a drug addict who would be in prison were her daddy not a Republican governor. She's what, 26 now? What the hell is she doing? I was married and working a professional job at 26.
And the other Bush son, Neil, if his role in Silverado and the S&L scandal weren't enough, got VD by having sex with hookers in Asia.
That whole family is a sick joke. They all belong on Jerry Springer, not in our White House.

Not that that was the POINT of Atrios's post -- but maybe this ironically handled troll reads his newspapers backward. Yeah, right, that's the ticket, he reads newspapers. And backward.

My guess is that it's due to the fact that Hell-O-Scam is a worthless piece of shit who's only socially redeeming values are that it sorta works, usually, and it's free. But maybe that's just me.
Seriously, though, the cookie problem hereabouts ia a puzzler. Fafblog gives me a cookie good for all threads, and I still have it when I get here, but as soon as I post here, the cookie is good only for that thread, and I need to apply for a new one every time I change threads.

OT, but the US military bodycount has jumped twice since I got up this morning. It just hit 3 figures for the month of November. And the Times latest says: Fighting raged in the rubble of Falluja, a city largely decimated by American troops during a week-long offensive. Two Marines were killed and four wounded in a guerilla ambush, military officials said. The offensive smashed a safe haven for the insurgents, but guerillas still roam the devastated streets, sniping at American troops and scaring away military engineers brought in to try to reconstruct the city.....
The unrelenting wave of assaults in the Sunni-dominated parts of the country indicate that the attack on Falluja could have inflamed Sunni resentment against the American presence rather than pacified it. American and Iraqi officials have found it impossible during the 19-month war to persuade hostile Sunni Arabs to lay down their arms and engage in legitimate politics. That goal, which appears increasingly quixotic as the insurgency grows in strength and lethality, becomes all the more pressing as the country lurches toward its first democratic elections, scheduled for the end of January.
Also, The Marines are engaged in a holding action in Ramadi, the provincial capital of Anbar. They have a presence at the government center and several outposts downtown, but they do not have real control of the city - insurgents roam freely and regularly murder residents deemed to be collaborating with the Americans or Iraqi government.

Good ideas that help ordinary people are kryptonite to the GOP, since they result in less money for them to steal.
Jennifer
Actually they would result in more money for the Thugs to steal, since the economy would be much healthier, but they are too short-sighted to realize that.

Walter,
I notice you didn't respond to my last thing, the little thing about enlisting. Why don't you try your hand being aggressive with some folks in Mosul
That will make you remember when
Uh, remember when we had an economy in which the jobs growth rate was faster than the population growth rate? In little things where the books weren't cooked like, oh, I don't know, manufacturing? (BTW, your butt boy Kenny Lay was a butt boy of George W. Bush, not Bill Clinton, so suck it!)
Remember when we had a time in which the federal taxation and spending levels were relatively in balance, such that we could offer middle-class people tax cuts for such things as day care for their children or education, not simply write blank checks for the super-rich, while still being able to expand health care coverage in such a way that 3 million more children are covered today than were 10 years ago?
Remember when we were at peace AND paid attention to terrorism, so that plots to blow up the Space Needle on Dec. 31, 2000, were actually averted, and major plots to blow up the World Trade Center and Pentagon, thus killing 3,000 people, weren't ignored?
Atrios is right--and I don't like to call people names--but you really ARE a fucking moron, Walter.
Again, why don't you take your aggression out somewhere else--like Mosul. Or maybe by trying to stop a speeding car with your bare hands.

I don't think it was a direct connection to Iraq. British royals have a tradition of serving in the military. He just wants to join the army and he implied - if that means serving on the front lines, so be it.
I don't think he is joining the army so he can do Islamic wars. British in general (except for Blair) have a better sense than that.

1. I guess you are admitting that all of Bush's policies have failed and now wish for the man you didn't back to bail your ass out. Tough shit.
2. Prince William has very little choice. As a royal and most likely to be king one day, he must serve. He may have a choice of what unit, but that's about it. Failure to do so would end his chances of ever wearing the crown.
3. Someone is really argueing about how much coverage is given to a library opening? Fuck, isn't there a wreck out on the highway that needs covering?

And Atrios implies that the media prominence of both library dedications was equivalent. What a crock. They are playing the Clinton yawner more than they will Bush's Second Inaugural.
Yes, he will be taking the oath of office again, in case you guys blotted that from your memory as effectively as Kurtz supposedly did in this instance.
Walter Cronkite
Okay, now you've annoyed me, and although I assume you give yourself whatever passes for sexual release in your sad little Nobody's life by getting yourself noticed, I just want to point out two things:
Number one, about this psychotic triumphalism I'm hearing from you third-tier Republican fans. Your snideness over the fact that you "won"... a mark of character, for sure. The character of a playground bully, raised with a sense of personal inadequacy yet immunity to criticism, that causes him to get his rocks off being mean.
You know. George W. Bush.
Secondly, to take the name of a distinguished journalist (a profession from before you were born), who in his golden years has become an unabashed spokesperson for human rights and LIBERALISM (!!), is truly offensive. Yo, bully boy. Let's see how YOU fucking like your heroes' names applied to people you loathe.
