The Conservative Manifesto
There are few details available as of yet, but that is no longer the point of a November putsch that has filleted or hacked several government institutions already. As far as impartial observers can tell, it's been the cultural equivalent of putting a Hooters in the Guggenheim.

I would prefer what goes on in a private bedroom stayed there, especially given the freaky stuff like "man on dog" sex those Republicans talk about.
From now until 2008, this is what Democrats need to do... remake the brand. This can't start in 2006 or 2008. It needs to start now. It must spell out the values of Democrats and repeat them over and over on Billboards, in radio commercials, in magazines and newspaper.
That Barak Obama quote is great. When ever I feel down, I fire up ITunes and play the audio of the speech and it gives me chills every time. It was the best political speech I've ever seen.

Those are fantastic! I’m partial to the JFK and the Anti-Torture one.
I’m cranky by the WaPo’s article on Kerry’s statement from yesterday: “Kerry signaled a return to partisan warfare”. Who did? Kerry or the fucking douche bags that attached an anti-abortion rider to the spending bill? Kerry or the assholes that in mass didn’t attend Daschle’s farewell speech? Kerry or monsters like Rove who for two weeks have gone on TV and kicked sand in the face of the Dems post election? Fuck you Washington Post. Kerry and the 49% of us who didn’t vote for this clown are just supposed to sit back and let these fools ruin our country? Blow me.
Okay, I feel better now…..back to football. GO BLUE!

What would all the GOP gasbags do without a Democratic Party? With everything they've won, they still act like the underdog. They remind me of Scar in the Lion King. In the end the hyenas will tear you to pieces.

To avoid jail, you can go fight in Iraq for this country.
Hey you little Weenie, I suppose you're posting from just outside Falluja, huh? Well, my best friend's son is. He's goddamn marine, one of the best....on his third fucking tour. And he's a goddamned Democrat. So's his mother, and his father.
My nephew is recovering from injuries suffered in July at Sammara. He lost six men to a suicide bomber and but for the grace of all that's holy and the fact that he walked in to another room is just lucky to be fucking alive. He's a lifer in the Army and a goddamned Democrat too.
My father fought in the Battle of the Bulge and the Battle of Hurtgen Forest (google that one asswipe) and he was a goddamned Democrat too.
My big brother spent his entire life in the Army and he's a goddamned Democrat.
So get your goddamned knickers out of your crack and join up buster. Then come back here and tell us all about it.

and look at those nude Dr. Laura pics.
Nah, better not. After a having spent the last two hours searching for porn on the internets, I've already got an unhealthy amount of "erototoxins" built up in my system. Of course, maybe the Dr. Laura pics would work as an anti-erototoxin and effectively reduce my levels to zero. I'm too chicken to try it, so maybe someone else would like to experiment.

Y'see, powerade, as mentioned at the top of the main page, we live in a reality-based community. And the thing about reality is, no matter what advantages you may think you have over it in the echo chambers of your beautiful mind, it will catch up with you.
This is reality. It's win or lose. No more handouts. No more social welfare. If you earn it, you keep it. If you don't have anything, who cares, that's your fault, not mine. Personal responsibility.
The liberal experiment failed. We are an ownership society and I am going to own all I can.

"Can the Democrats be counted on to stir the pot? Hertsgaard and Cannon doubt it. The party is too caught up in its own post-election soul-searching to turn into pit bulls. "It's hard to imagine they'll be very outspoken against the president," says Hertsgaard. "But we'll see. Events could change all that. If the economy continues to go south and Iraq continues to go south, and the public is getting very tired of it, you can begin to see the press getting more critical. But I don't count on it. They [the media] tend to take their views from what goes on inside Washington."
Neither Rosenstiel nor Hertsgaard hold out much hope that the media will single-handedly deliver a blockbuster. "There are cases of the press on its own historically rising up and challenging an administration," says Rosenstiel. "But these are very rare." (Watergate is the best example.) "They almost always require the traditional stimulus -- opposition members of Congress to give voice to this."

cali should just form its own country before it's too late
you should have thought of that before electing Arnold. He's going to redistrict the Dems to minority status a la Texas.

Another Mencken quote, in re the GOPukes (paraphrasing): For every complex problem, there's a single, simple answer...but it's wrong...
Kind of funny that Mencken the old conservative seems so much more of a leftist these days than Orwell the old socialist.
But if you read Orwell, he was kind of a British jingoist (read "Inside the Whale" and goes on about the basic decency of the common Anglo Saxon vs. the corrupt "cosmopolitin" elite. Mencken was utterly contemptuous of American nationalist. Read his essays "The Inferiority of the Anglo Saxon Race" or "The Sahara of the Bozart".
I doubt he would have been surpised at all by the way Southern religious reactionaries have taken over the government.
Roosevelt made him a bit obsolete. Mencken never quite knew how to mock a suave liberal aristocrat. But Bush has made him relevent again.
The Bilbos, Rankins, and Huey Longs are still with us. And unlike William Jennings Bryan (who was at least good leftist) today's fundamentalists have no redeeming qualities.

Between generosity and greed.
Between looking ahead and looking over your shoulder.
Between trust and suspicion.
Between hope and fear.
Have fun, guy. And trust no one.

You forgot one: between long-term strategic thinking about the personal benefits garnered from a productive society and a hand-to-mouth (whatever's in my hand, I need to put it in my mouth before the librahls can take it) mentality.

Ah, Republican values - where premarital sex is evil but the promiscuous, open-air fucking of the American people and raping our country prompts boastful pride.
Have you ever heard of "ownership"? This is a capitalist society, and we are free to own as much as we want, and own what we earn.
The socialist experiment has proven to be an abject failure, and has been totally and unequivically rejected by the electorate.
You can dream all you want about the days of the New Deal, but Americans have rejected it in favor of conservatism, capitalism, and values.

My new theme song [which I plan on beating to death like a drum when anything & everything goes wrong, including fights at basketball games]: "I BLAME BUSH," then shut my trap refusing to be drawn into some pathetic debate with a brain-washed red-state of mind.
Try it yourself -- after the first few times, it just becomes automatic and rolls off your tongue, like water off a duck's back, or illegal scandals off the Republicans.
Over & over, launch it into the country's conciousness, like Coulter yapping, "Monica's dress, Monica's dress." Or Swifties [clearly an oxymoron?] on "Kerrylied, Kerrylied."

I have news for you. Delay isn't going anywhere. You're dreaming if you think he will be prosecuted. When one owns the courts, it's easy.
Same with Lay and Skilling. Presidential pardons, its over.
One nice thing about this election is that the rethugs have dropped their masks and revealed themselves as the hateful, greedy, fascists pigs that we always knew they were.
They don't even bother to hide their real agenda- I mean listen to this nonsense... "we have the courts so we'll be all corrupt and there's nothing you can do...nyah nah nah".
Great values you got there, a CEO rips off thousands of employees and stockholders and enriches himself? no problem! pardon!
You dems disagree with us? no problem! we'll just jail you all!
Poor? got cancer? your husband killed in Iraq throwing you and your children into poverty? so sorry!! quit expecting help! suck it up! get your ass to a poor house!
Got your legs blown off in Iraq or Afghanistan? too bad!! no more VA, no more social programs! suck it up, get out there with your cup and beg motherfucker!!
Gee, nice society you're advocating there. I sincerely hope you get to live in it- and I hope it treats you the way you deserve to be treated.

Anybody here ever read Gramsci?
more and more it seems to me that he got it just about right...discussing hegemony in the modern state (all the outlines of which were already in place in 1930)... how the structure, now already nearly a century old (Gramsci made his call on the basis of only a couple of decades of observation, before Mussolini killed him, in prison, in '37) has the capacity to absorb the energies of its opponents, into what he--being italian, and Roman--named 'lacunae.' These are the narrow apertures into empty spaces through which oppositional energies are channeled. Such structural resistance impedes the energy enough to mislead (delude?) its organizers into thinking they are having an effect; meanwhile, the blank spaces behind the lacunae just expand and absorb and suffocate the resistance...
That's what I feel now...

Such structural resistance impedes the energy enough to mislead (delude?) its organizers into thinking they are having an effect; meanwhile, the blank spaces behind the lacunae just expand and absorb and suffocate the resistance...
Which is why the so-called left will always lose. You are fragmented into a million factions and spend your time each fighting for your own little pet project. Meanwhile the big picture is left to the GOP.

Bullshit my man. According to This Report many of the people who voted for the dullard in chief demonstrate remarkable lack of understanding of his vaunted agenda. Now if the rubes really knew what you guys represent.......

Powerade's vision of America is more like "Fucked Company's server is down and I have to find a new place to troll. Maybe I'll be a Republican today."
SWR
Hell, why don't they go to that new libertarian utopia they just created in Iraq?
Talk about an "ownership society", it's a troll's paradise - no government bureaucracy, no Medicare or Medicaid, no pesky environmental regs, no social programs to have to pay taxes on...What a great opportunity to get in on the ground floor...

Funny, it seems like the U.S.A. did pretty good with the New Deal. I mean, we are the world's undisputed superpower, right?
Well, we were before George W. Bush took office. Soon it will become all too clear that America is no longer the dominant superpower economically, militarily or diplomatically. We'll be lagging far behind the European Union in human rights. And we will deserve this, because dumbfucks like powerade multiply too fast and make more little cowardly, fearful Republicans.
They will succeed in turning America into even more of a cultural and intellectual backwater. And at the end of the day, when the whole fucking place is laying in ruins, they still won't accept responsibility for it.
You want an ownership society? Fine. The next four years-- you own those. When you fuck everything up, it's your fault. You guys won. It's on you now. Good luck, fuckers.

jeez .. powerade .. nice link on ahnulds approval rating ... I wouldn't gamble on that 60%
"Anytime more rank-and-file members of the opposing party approve than disapprove, that is a unique time," said Mark DiCamillo, director of the Field Poll. "I tend to think that it won't last, but he is still in an extended honeymoon."
A poll by the Public Policy Institute of California during the budget standoff last month showed Schwarzenegger's popularity had dropped from 64 to 57 percent.
here is another tidbit to consider: And thanks for making my point for me you dumb piece of shit ... he's got no long term political capital and appearing with the chimp has enraged a lot of voters out here

From the Choir-
I agree about Planned Parenthood. Republicans think that outlawing abortion will end it. It will only make it unsafe. They trust that it won't be their little girl that ends up pregnant. But what they don't realize is that the most conservative, suppressive and religious parents breed the very 14 year old kids having sex parties in small towns across America. When enough of them die they will realize their mistake. I personally can't wait.

nice point from the choir ... ask them if their daughter got raped or if she made a mistake and got pregnant even ... should we put the young girl in jail or should we just institutionalize all women when they're pregnant until the baby is born??

I never read Gramsci, but I did read "Daniel Martin" by John Fowles, who referred to his (Gramsci) work throughout this novel. I think I've read this at least 5 or 6 times and I'm ready to pull it off the bookshelf and read it again. One of my favorite books ever.

No feeling sorry for poweraids, he'll get his as all fascists do, hanging from his heels with his guts dripping over his face. The same attitude, words and values of Hitler's kids, Stalin's buddies, Pol Pot's circle jerkers, and so on. They have their ownership society now by their own admission, despite all the whining and crying boo-hoo, and it will be very easy for the non-owners to find them and dispose of them when enough is enough. All the bragging about their lack of morals is serving to grease the skids that will bring them down. They are so blinded by their ignorance that they see no history, no morality, no sense of goodness and courage. They are the bullies, the true weaklings that would destroy the finest example of human governance in history, just to make some fucked-up point that only a few deserve what they can steal, the rest can take a leap. The so-called "cleaning up" of the CIA is a huge mistake, since it basically involves tossing the pros and replacing them with asslickers who won't have the balls to tell the leadership what's really going on, leaving them both stupid and blind. I'm glad I'm too old to be affected by all of this in the long term, but I do look forward to the mobs dragging fucktards like our shit-for-brains trolls out of their gated houses and stringing them up so they can better see the fires...

Typical liberal bloviating. Tell me, what have you done? You sit here on this blog and cuss at me. But did you or your party ever organize to stop the right wing? Last time I checked you were awol for:
* Demanding justice for the killing of the Kennedys and King? Nope. You were busy believing that some lone nut had done it and calling each other conspiracy theorists.
* Organizing for the protection of unions as they were under assualt during Reagan. Again, awol. Where were you? Probably getting your rocks off in Club Med, while the right was busy dismantling the true opposition to corporate power.
* Organizing for the removal of Ken Starr and the Clinton Inquisition. Again awol. Where were you? Probably listening to talk shows and yelling at your TV, but doing nothing.
* Organizaing against election theft in 2000 and 2004. Again awol. In fact most of you are sticking your heads in the sand and pretending nothing happened.
You are pathetic and weak. You're all talk. That's why I support the GOP. They walk the talk, right or wrong, at least they stand up for what they believe in.

First of all, great work. I had the branding idea in my head, but didn't get off my duff. Kudos to you, Oliver.
I'm with the poster who went for understated. I think we could really capitalize on a simple fact: all of the cool trend-setting areas in this country are deep, deep blue. So let's capitalize on that and build a badass brand that appeals beyond weblog-reading political dweebs like myself. Oliver is leading us in that direction, so I'd say keep the brands cool rather than specifically political, at least for a good long while.
I'm for dropping or deeply diminishing the political slogans. Just a brand with cool designs a la Roca-Fella, FUBU, etc, and vague references to The Donkey. The donkey looks really good on the shirt you made - nice work. How about just that donkey, all blue, a little more indie, as an applique on a baby-doll. Something with crossover appeal. Or maybe you could make it small and embroider it on a men's dress shirt - real subtle-like, but there to see. There will be time to bring out the political message, but let's figure out how the brand image will work before trying to put it to use carrying political content.

I picture these things on posters everywhere.

Amen .. and add some bobby kennedy to that blogroll .. the man was a prince.
Yep, syntallic. RFK for sure. I only mentioned FDR and JFK because Willis had the Four Freedoms and the latter's statement about what it means to be a liberal.
I agree with you, too, that the Dems did good work early in the Cold War. Is it too late to point out that, though the Cold War ended under Bush pere, the basic policies, followed by all presidents since, were set in place by Truman?

I love it that the "personal responsibility" picked the Chimp to rally around -- the poster child for undeserved entitlement!
On his own GWB couldn't hold down a job mopping floors at McD's -- they expect more for their minimum wage pay than 42% vacation.

He, Nazi Breath, will you come to my house to take me away? Personally? Just you.

Democrats - against spending unborn children's tax dollars on corporate welfare now

And we can see that by our trolls remarks that the Republicans hate an independent judiciary as provided by the US Constitution. As for the Philippines, Baghdad Bush won this election in the same way GMArroyo won her election.
Democrats - Supporting the ENTIRE Constitution, not just the parts that focus group well.
Democrats - No longer the party of overt racism. They left us for the other guys.
Democrats - Defending Sound Financial Institutions And Practices Since The Great Depression.
Democrats - We Didn't Have America Bail Out The President's Brother's Business Failures! (Silverado S&L)

I shit you knot, I went on a rant in the kitchen this AM about this every subject---
Political Branding...
Saw it tonight in Warren Miller's Impact, and I see it all the time these days, in creative ways...
I am no fan of product placement, or the SPAM that infects AAR radio Network, but I do recall just how successful creative advertising was for FedEx and Wilson soccer balls??? So successful I don't even have to mention the movie that taught me about the Aero in the logo, and made me think completely differently about a leather ball when Phish jammed out WILSON!!! on top of the Dave Letterman Marque-
I had no specific ideas in my rant in the kitchen, just that we have this real live relaity liberal media problem thing, and a hell bent jesus rapture infested, domesticated corporate wright wing shill hack GOP news media thing that wants us to be their Monkey and is literally killing us with obfuscation, misinformation and "lockouts" on subjects that turn tides.

First, I love the idea. I've been an OW reader for sometime and have almost always found him to be very savvy. Second, we need to overwrite what America has been spoonfed about liberalism and the Democratic Party over the last few decades. We know the media is doing a poor job of being factual because they are too fearful of any backlash. We the liberals of the world have been hoisted by our own petard, because we do see the nuances of the world.
It isn't that the rest of America is too stupid, it is that they are too tired, to overburdened by long hours for meager pay, to worried about their kids because they parents have to work harder than ever to supplies the basics of life and on and on and on. If you are holding down two jobs just to keep food on the table, about the only time you have to think about politics is for 5 minutes a week. Therefore, keeping our message simple and repetitive is the way to reach them. They aren't too stupid, they are just worn out. We who understand nuances and can see black and white are trying to reach people who are too exhausted to pay attention. That is why what Oliver is suggesting is perfection.

This is reality. It's win or lose. No more handouts. No more social welfare. If you earn it, you keep it. If you don't have anything, who cares, that's your fault, not mine. Personal responsibility.
Are you serious? Do you really think Republicans are Libertarians? You fucking idiot, they're just passing the buck to your kids. In case you haven't been paying attention junior, these childish twerps you think are so fucking Ayn Rand are desperately fishing about for ways to pay for the messes they've made. Hope you enjoy not getting to write off your state income taxes. Hope you enjoy it when you have to pay for you own fucking health insurance because your company no longer gets to expense it.
Personal responsibility? Ha ha ha ha. A president who had to be bailed out of every fucking failed thing he ever did (that is, every thing he ever did). At the cost of hundreds of millions of dollars of investor money. And his brothers - the same way. How much did Neil cost taxpayers? Why are the Chinese paying him $2 million when he admits he doesn't know shit about high tech?
You're a fucking idiot. Personal responsibility? It'll be a cold day in hell when you see that from Bush or Cheney or any of these losers you think are gonna make things so sweet.
Oh, and speaking of majorities, how does it feel to be in the 3% of mankind that likes Bush, with the rest of the world hating his guts like no one since Hitler? Yeah, you're in the majority in your puny little brain.

Jeez, Koolaid - sorry, Powerade isn't even hiding the fact that he's a fascist to the core.
Liberalism has been on the right side of history, from France and America's Revolutions to World War 2 to the fall of the USSR. YES, liberalism did THAT, too - just look at Solidarity, Havel, and let's not forget Gorbachev.
The values proven by history will triumph over the values manufactured by the radical Right.
