Gravataryes, $2 million but it was the yacht that has been used by Presidents since what, Roosevelt? It's an historical presidential item that was sold to private owners a while back that is now being sought as part of the collection again. Is it worth it? Probably not but it's not something to raise a stink about like, ohhh, I dunno, REPUGS SHOOTING DOWN INTELLIGENCE REFORM! OR TAX RECORD SNOOPING (mentioned earlier)

GravatarJack,
You aren't getting it. The republicans got where they got by using small things to represent big things. Not by pointing out actual policy differences, and not by making serious claims on policy issues. They used clinton's blow job to indict all the democrats. We should use bush's yacht and the sneak IRS info to tar all the republicans with the accusation that they sought power for its own sake, and that they are abusing power because they think bush is royalty and the rest of us are peasants. That will play well with bush's own base and the eternally suspicious libertarians.

GravatarPerfect:
Now the question is WHO put the yacht money in the bill. I suppose we will hear it too was a mistake, as if a congressmen would put something SO embarrassing to the president into a bill.

AND:
Don't forget the provision to allow certain senators or the agents to examine anybody's tax return for any reason. First they lied about it as if was the action of "staffers." It was that guy fron Oklahoma Ishtook.

GravatarTena, you got some psychadelic tea for Sunday morning? Cuz I really doubt that the average Murkin sheeple will ever even notice a new yacht plying the Potomac for the delectation of favored oligarchs...or ever complain if they did notice...

GravatarI saw something on this yesterday, it seems to be for repurchasing the Sequoia, but the current owners said it wasn't for sale. WTF does any president need a freaking yacht for?

Of course the formula for Pell Grants was changed. We can't have all those poor kids going to college when we have more wars to fight. /snark

More tax cuts, more tax cuts! Bastards.

GravatarWell, konopelli - no, I'm not sipping psychedelic tea this morning.

I guess we'll see. I've noticed, however, that when it comes to money issues, the media will sometimes be more inclined to get involved than in some other kinds of issues.

So I can't say for sure, but I wouldn't be totally surprised if the yacht didn't get mentioned, since it's mentioned in the story Atrios linked to.

Can't have that; Money so people can go to college - Nah! Can't have that! Money so that the troops will have all the equipment they need - Nah! Can't have that. But money to buy the Boy King a new toy - Sure! No problem!. I'm quite fond of saying how the majority of Americans are fucking retarded. Well, this latest atrocity is proof. Buy the way, isn't owning a yacht kind of like, you know, a Northeast Liberal, elitist sort of thing? Just asking.

Gravatarthis is all deeply disgusting, but one thing has changed - I would never have known about the yacht, much less the IRS and abortion provisions, had it not been for the existence of this blog and others like it.

Now, I have this information less than 12 hours after the bill was passed and I'm going to write my senators - CLINTON AND SCHUMER - and ask why they voted for this abomination.

No, I'm going to ask Hillary why I shouldn't want Rick Lazio in office instead - a real Republican might be able to get something for NY.

Okay, this is war. Let's not give these Dems a moment's peace.

GravatarGod himself ordained that George W. Bush should have a yacht.

Jesus hinted at it in the Sermon on the Mount, when he said the meek shall inherit the earth. What he meant, of course, was that they should know their place and stand on the shore looking with adoration at rich people on their yachts.

It couldn't be clearer. I mean, it's the word of God and everything. St. George will be doing the Lord's work every time he sails forth upon the Yacht of Righteousness.

It's the Yacht that reflects frivolous abuse.

The first should cause more outrage, the second will actually cause more. They are part of the same wretched pattern of abuse.

GravatarPhredd,

Yeah, in the grand scheme of things the yacht is unimportant. But I believe Atrios' point is that this is the kind of simple story the press can actually understand and run with. It reeks of elitism and Bush just ran as Mr. Nascar. We're borrowing $$ from the Chinese and the dollar is tanking. Average Americans are seeing the interest rates on their credit cards go up and can hardly manage to fill their gas tanks. This is not an auspicious time to be buying the president a yacht. Using this story is good politics. Can you imagine what the Republicans would have done if Clinton had gotten a presidential yacht? Well, that's what we should be doing to Bush. Because it works.

I don't disagree. I longingly pine for the good ole days when Nixon abused his power by snooping into his enemies' tax returns and the press went apoplectic.

Nowadays they can't even get it up for systematically sodomizing children at Abu Graib. I guess Stevens will have to rifle through Arthur Sulzberger's tax records before we see a rise.

GravatarThe repubs pick on small things and blow them out of proportion. The yacht can be just the thing for the dems. Ordinary people will wonder why man of the people George needs a yacht.

Why did dems vote for the bill? They have to if they have any political aspirations - it probably also includes funding for some programs that they will be ripped apart for if they don't vote for it.

Just publicize this thing and every other outrage, big and small, that the Bush administration comes up with. Moveon.org or other political groups should be starting a four year campaign NOW.

Just publicize this thing and every other outrage, big and small, that the Bush administration comes up with. Moveon.org or other political groups should be starting a four year campaign NOW.

And if they allow foreign-born citizens to run, how does "President Teresa Heinz-Kerry" sound?

GravatarThis is the final upshot of all that ruckus in the senate last night.
Tax thing was taken out, abortion language stayed, but Frist promised to bring later Boxer's bill to take it out and the appropriations bill passed.

Wapo this morning:

Congress reached final agreement last night on a $388 billion spending bill funding 13 government departments and dozens of domestic agencies in 2005, after last-minute objections from abortion rights advocates threatened to delay or derail the entire measure.

House passage came on a vote of 344 to 51. Later in the evening, the Senate gave its approval, 65 to 30.
[snip]

The abortion language remained in the spending bill, but late yesterday, Senate opponents agreed not to block its consideration after Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist (R-Tenn.) promised to schedule a vote in the near future on a bill drafted by Sen. Barbara Boxer (D-Calif.) to repeal the provision.

Adding to the chaotic finale of the proceedings on the giant bill was a last-minute fracas over another provision, apparently slipped into the bill at the last minute by a House staff aide, that would allow agents designated by the chairman of the House or Senate Appropriations Committee to look at tax returns.
[snip]
Under an agreement between GOP and Democratic leaders, the Senate later approved language dropping the controversial provision and delayed sending the bill to the president until the House follows suit next week. With spending authority for most federal agencies running out at midnight, Congress also approved stopgap legislation to keep the government running until the spending package becomes law.

GravatarKaren H, I hear (read?) and feel your anger.

Fired off a furious email to Corzine and Lautenberg just after 6PM last night. Had just heard Lautenberg deriding the IRS provision, but essentially giving up. Then later caught a bit of Stevens with the oldest line in the world: "Trust me!" He declared he would never exercise the power to snoop on IRS filings--which the law was giving him and his counterpart in the House. Never! Had he ever broken a promise? he asked.

Well???

Also, the Repubs took a small issue of floating checks at the House bank and made it the centerpiece of their attack on entrenched and misused power by the Democrats. They took down Rostenkowski and a few others and took over the House.

Most people do not follow ins and outs of law making; they don't have time or interest. They do follow the gossipy things which the SCLM loves to focus on. The Repubs fed that side and now essentially control the megaphone; the Dems, if they try now, don't even get a hearing, much less an airing of their complaints. Or, it's a one day story, which just doesn't cut it with the electorate.

So, yes, symbolism is extremely important. Yachts are highly symbolic. Use that symbol.

But, first, follow Lakoff's ideas and ID and summarize the VALUE behind our criticism, plus what we would do.

That's the hard part--finding the kernal of the values behind our ideas and policies. We usually need at least a couple paragraphs to get there!

"The Sequoia Presidential Yacht Foundation
The newly formed non-profit and tax exempt Sequoia Presidential Yacht Foundation is set up to acquire, endow, and operate Sequoia.

Charters - Sequoia is available for limited, high end charters to help off-set some, but by no means all of her costs. Elegant and intimate, she can carry up to 49 guests under Coast Guard rules. She cruises mostly on the Potomac and Chesapeake but can cruise further by special arrangement. For charter information call 202-872-8228.

Contributions - The Foundation accepts donations from the public, corporations and professional firms, philanthropic groups, associations, foundations, and others to help save the historic vessel for the American people."

Clinton and Schumer - Yea

Proving once again that when you're targeted as a lib'rul, you have to go out of your way to prove you aren't, lest you wind up in a grainy photograph in someone else's attack ad.

So basically, you stroke the Power and support the status quo wherever and whenever... so that you might gain some support for your pet projects on another day.

Super.

Meanwhile, here's a senator from New Jersey who's a gadzillionaire, a progressive, and simply "bought himself a Senate seat". So what? He flies under the radar for the most part, and in terms of progressivism, he puts Clinton and Schumer to shame.

GravatarI wrote my useless Republican Senators to ask how they could do this. I agree with Atios. When the Republicans give us gifts like this, and they will as they become drunk with power, we have to use them. Soldiers without the supplies they need and Bush needs a yacht?

And, Dems, don't worry that you voted for this bill, too. Someone (whose name is not Donna Brazile) come up with a two-sentence explanation of the fact that the Republicans inserted this into a large bill and that voting against the overall bill would have done harm, but that the blame goes to the Republicans who put this into the bill. We've got to start framing things not as to who voted for something but as to who inserted something into a bill.

GravatarOops-looks like IRS provision may be removed. House must agree, however.

Main gripe to my senators was: where's the Democratic spine regarding the abortion funding language. That since the House would never vote to approve its removal, Boxer's agreement with Frist was essentially rolling and playing dead.

Some Dems have been saying we need throw overboard some of the items the Dem base considers sacrosanct in order to, what, woo the Religions Right?

I'm pretty depressed this morning.

GravatarHecate - I agree. Votes don't tell the whole story on any legislation, since all kinds of shit is put into bills. I wish that there was some movement to stop that. I wish there was a way to force Congress to stop putting controversial legislation into bills in order to pass the provisions that otherwise wouldn't pass.

GravatarEPT,

The Clinton haircut is a very good comparison. When we write to the press, we should use that as an example. You spent days covering the Clinton haircut; how much coverage will you give to the fact that the Republicans inserted a provision buying Lame Duckie a yacht during a time of war when many American families are finding out just in time for the holidays that they've made the ultimate sacrifice.

Unless... someone who presently has some political cache makes a statement that everyone has to print or broadcast, simply by virtue of who he is.

You know. Someone like... JOHN KERRY?

But he'd better hurry. His cache is growing dimmer. Now, watch and see what he does about this, if anything.

Atrios, THIS is where you'll learn exactly how serious John Kerry is about being the thorn in the GOP's side. You don't wanna hear my prediction.

GravatarI sent off a message of disgust to my two NY senators. Really this has to stop.

GravatarVery conservative Republicans voted NO on this bill.

Many Dems -- including some just reelected by wide margins -- voted YES.

I'd like to know more about the bill before rushing to conclusions about those who voted for it.

GravatarSorry Koponelli -- I started to post that I agreed with your comment about Kerry bearing his war experience better than anyone in public life, then got sidetracked, and then refreshed and sent just the salutation by mistake.

GravatarWhen will the Dems learn, when they roll over and go along, that's the end of the story? The bad stuff gets passed (it will anyway) but they also lose the media shitstorm, which is their one and only opportunity to get out there and point out all the bad stuff that is in the bill.

EVERY SINGLE DEM SENATOR could have voted "no", or abstained from voting, and then used the talking point about privacy of IRS records - driving the point home that a promise to take it out later isn't good enough, considering how the Republicans have abused the Dept. of Homeland Security and the Patriot Act.

Shit, don't ANY of these people know how this game is played? They had a golden opportunity to slam them on not only the bad stuff in THIS bill, but bad stuff they've already PASSED - and ABUSED.

If this is how they play the game, they DESERVE to lose. Which is what they'll continue to do. We need a new party.

GravatarYes, every Democrat who voted for this outrage deserves a solid pounding for this. They should have voted no, then found themselves a way to get onto at least local TV by today. Schumer's really good at grabbing headlines on Sunday in New York; others, no doubt, do the same in their market. They ought to be on the air, ridiculing this for what it is.

GravatarNo wonder we're losing. We can't even find out which yacht we're talking about. Is it the historic, now shitty looking Sequoia, bought for the Smithsonian or a new yacht? We can't do anything with half information like this. Bill Clinton would've know what to do.

All we're doing now is cry to the moon about something we know shit about. Oh yeah, we'll win next time with this kinda nonsense.

GravatarBarry Champlain,

"Unless... someone who presently has some political cache makes a statement that everyone has to print or broadcast, simply by virtue of who he is."

The "liberal media" doesn't have to print or broadcast anything. If they do print or broadcast anything critical of the repubs they know they'll get hit with 10,000 angry emails and calls. If they bash a dem, liberal blogs will fill with angry comments about dems.

Why in the world would the media report honestly on what any dem does or says?

How about you, what are you doing to get the word out?

GravatarWOW, just watched a ad for an upcoming program of 20/20 on ABC which was on CBS I thought about, "What really happened to Matthew Shepard." They're interviewing his murderers in prison for the "real scoop." And thus it begins and begins to roll faster against those like me...

GravatarListen, folks, here's the argument for voting "aye" on the omnibus "monstrosity"---it was an up or down vote on an omnibus spending bill needed to keep government functioning. That said, after Byrd, the ranking member of the finance committee said he would not vote for it because, among tehobvious problems, it allowed the WH to have too much input into the legislative branch's role, and becuae they did not know what they were voting on---every Dem should have voted "No" and stood firm. Notable "No"s--my two senators from this rd state--Byrd and Rockefeller; Kerry, Edwards, Boxer, Fenstein, Durbin, Hagel, McCain. Biggest Yeas---Clinton and Schumer. Make Hillary expalin her yea---this should be good.

GravatarWith letters to my local newspaper and Harry Reid's office at the ready, here are some additional thoughts:

1. This should be the renewal of the "Golden Fleece" awards, which Bill Proxmire (D-WI) used to famously give out. It's a simple message: Here are the priorties of the Republicans. Every week, Dems should be pounding this message and exposing the waste and fraud being thrust upon all of us. Plain and simple.

2. Apparently the threat from Al Queda scuba terrorist have decreased, which is good news for the boating community.

3. Attaturk, my thought for a new name for the boat: SS My Pet Boat.

4. OT, but did any of you see the Big Dog smack around Peter Jennings?? I've only watched a small amount of news since Nov. 3, but caught a small glimpse of the exchange where Clinton told Jennings he "did not want to go there" because PJ and his network's repeating the various leaks out of the Starr investigation. Would love more details and thoughts.

Blue day for all Badger fans, by the way . . . .

GravatarOf course Lautenberg and Corzine are both independently wealthy, and they represent a liberal state, but what's wrong with the Senators from New York?

GravatarIs why Daschle lost? Why Daschle, the do-nothing Dem lost.

Democrats need to clean house and Hillary and her vote for a bankruptcy bill that favors all those predatory credit card lenders along with her support for the paperless voting machine (no paper ballots on e-vote till 2006 NOW means NO paper ballots AT ALL.) She can go to hell, please Hillary, take good friend Al From with you.

We need more Dems like Howard Dean - standing up and fighting IS a good thing.

So is Bush's presidential yacht coming out of Bush's extended credit plan for his new appoved 80 billion dollar loan? Is press dead or what? Funny how CNN has mentioned a word about this shit?

And what is Alan Greenspan saying about Bush's "spend like there is NO tomorrow" policy.

Greenspan warns of Wall St hiding
By Fleur Leyden
November 22, 2004

Australia's sharemarket is expected to open sharply lower this morning, after US Federal Reserve chairman Alan Greenspan said foreign funding of the United States' massive trade deficit would eventually waver, prompting a Wall Street shellacking.

"Given the size of the US current account deficit, a diminished appetite for dollar balances must occur at some point," Dr Greenspan told a European currency conference.

The US current account deficit grew to a record $US166.2 billion ($212 billion) in the second quarter and the federal deficit was a record $US412 billion in the financial year to the end of September.

President George Bush authorised a further $US800 billion boost in the federal debt limit to $US8.18 trillion on Friday night.

A 4.8 per cent surge in the price of crude oil to $US48.44 a barrel on Friday night did not help matters and the Dow Jones Industrial Average lost 115.64 points, or 1.1 per cent, to close at 10,456.9.

The S&P 500 fell 13.21 to 1170.34 and the Nasdaq Composite fell 33.65 to 2070.63.

Anybody up for a investing in Bush's privatization programs is a fool and don't take it from me but rather take it from words of Greenspan.

Lets hope everyone that voted for Bush gets his just deserts. Talk about your aiding and abetting of criminal behavior.

GravatarI George W Bush actually cared about America, he would use some of his millions to purchase the boat, and donate it to the park service.

However, we know that a Republicans money is sacrosanct, especially if he is wealthy.

I hope above hope, that a Democrat will stand up and point this out.

GravatarJennifer -- I'm with you. The Dems can't be accused of obstruction just by voting no because there aren't enough of them to stop legislation from passing.

They should just say this or that bill is being rammed before we have time to examine it, and in order to assure the American people that no provisions have been slipped into legislation with out due examination and consideration, we vote no.

GravatarIf you watched This Week with george stupidopolus you'd never know a huge fight went on into night over that omnibus train wreck bill. In fact you'd never know the bill was voted on yesterday.

The news print conventional wisdom seems to be shaping along the lines of dems worked together with repubs on that mess. Even after having worked hand in hand with repubs the dems are whining about what's in it, and of course dems wanted to spend a lot more.

It doesn't have to be this way. If you don't like it, make yourself heard. How about you local paper for a start?

GravatarEveryone, Please write one letter to your local paper and express your outrage at this. Frame it as a provision inserted by the Republicans into an omnibus bill. This isn't about who voted for the overall bill, in the end. It's about who put this provision into the bill.

GravatarSorry to be pedantic, but need to nip this in the bud here on Atios. I have to double-read each time bcz I'm not sure what the writer means.

cache (pronounced like "cash") is a place where supplies, food, weapons, etc., are stored, often hidden.

cachet (rhymes with "sashay") is a "mark by which quality or authenticity can be distinguished."

Both come from French.

I hear military people pronouncing "cache" like "cachet." Anyone know why? Military-speak? To make the word more understandable over radio transmissions? Ignorance?

cachet (rhymes with "sashay") is a "mark by which quality or authenticity can be distinguished."

Both come from French.

I hear military people pronouncing "cache" like "cachet." Anyone know why? Military-speak? To make the word more understandable over radio transmissions? Ignorance?

GravatarThe media seems to have decided to focus on the blocking of the intelligence reform bill.
And God knows they can't focus on more than one thing at a time-like the 5 year olds chasing the soccer ball.

Gravataryou have to remember: the Congress, every last one of them, sees its duty and loyalty to be towards the oligarchy/money/bidness interests before any other concerns. That is why Kerry conceded when he did: the stock market was getting nervous...

GravatarDoes anyone remember the "luxury tax" debate from the Reagan years? The argument went that, if we raised taxes on luxury items, like yachts, etc, then the blue-collar workers who build these things will suffer, thus dragging the middle-class working economy down.

Given the rethug spin-machine, I bet if the criticisms on the presidential yacht builds up some steam, then we will start to see counterattacks based on "liberals hate middle-American boat-builders!". And if it happens to be only a changing hands of the USS Sequoia, then it will be "liberals hate hard-working deck-hands and yeomen!".

By the way, of you go to the Bush home page, you can see Kerry wind-surfing past a boat that looks suspiciously like the Sequoia.

Compare the yacht behind
Kerry windsurfing
against
U.S.S. Sequoia.

GravatarHow about you, what are you doing to get the word out?

Well first of all, same thing you're doing. Or have YOU bought-into that whole marginalization of blogs on the internets as being not credible (except if you're Drudge)?

Believe me, these uncontrolled breakouts of Democracy are a BIG concern to literally everyone in the axis of Bush. Smaller though their reach might be, they circumvent a totally controlled mass distribution system of disinformation, and a lotta simoleans went into that system, pal. This is not something they take lightly. Regardless of what they posture.

But I suspect the real cause for the irritation I hear in your virtual voice is that once again, someone from the side of the angels has punctured the Kerry balloon. Okay, I dig fully the need to have figureheads and heroes; look what it did for a C average fuckup dry drunk who doesn't really represent his loyal subjects.

All I'm saying, and you still haven't really taken the challenge of commenting on this specifically, is that if the media isn't about to air a story that makes the boy king look bad, then it's up to someone who can *get on the fucking air in the first place* and make a statement that makes page one.

And for the moment, all we got's John Kerry. You willing to bet the firstborn that he's actually gonna use that power, over an issue where even Atrios correctly points out, we've got the poster child from Hell??

Should he? WILL he? Yes/No?

GravatarMarc Candor -- Totally agree. If it's the SEquoia, we say we believe this historic yacht should be returned to the people as part of the Smithsonian collection and the government eagerly awaits its donation by the current ownwers. However, the expenditure of the taxpayers' money for a yacht for presidential use in the current fiscal climate while cutting Pell Grant availability is simply unacceptable.

Jawbone | Email | Homepage | 11.21.04 - 11:50 am

None of the grunt units have the sophistication to understand the meaining of 'cachet', or use it properly. Pronouncing "cache" as 'cash' would send 'wrong' message, especially after that flap early on over the troops breaking into caches of cash...if they said we have a cash here, folks all over Iraq would break ranks to steal whatever they could... So 'cache" is 'kashay', and cash is scrip...and 'cachet' disappears into the fog of war...

GravatarBarry Champlain,

"then it's up to someone who can *get on the fucking air in the first place* and make a statement that makes page one."

My mistake. I thought you were serious. You are just another "somebody else's fault" excuser. Don't blame you, look what somebody else didn't do.

Did you happen to see the articles on Kerry's first day back to the senate. Very interesting. According to the media he glad handed for a minute before he scurried up the private stairs to his private office where he ordered shrimp for lunch.

"And for the moment, all we got's John Kerry. You willing to bet the firstborn that he's actually gonna use that power"

Here is a tip for ya:
You are a terrible mind reader, and big part of reading is comprehension. You should forget the mind reading and work on comprehension part.

All we have is us. Make yourself heard.

GravatarThe [intelligence] bill collapsed when Reps. Duncan Hunter, R-Calif., and James Sensenbrenner, R-Wis., chairmen of the Armed Services and Judiciary committees, respectively, raised objections.

Meaning that two Republican members of the House defeated both Bush and their Speaker.

This is a much bigger story than anything the Democrats can do right now.

GravatarAs there seems to be some misunderstanding about the Yacht

It's the Sequoia

"The bill, for example, provides up to $2 million to buy a former presidential yacht for a Navy museum and $250,000 for the Country Music Hall of Fame in Nashville."

I used to have an idiot workmate, who loved to pronounce "cache" Cashay. No matter how frequently I attempted to adjust his pronunciation with a clew stick, it never took.

And the onus is on THEM to make it so. Three times now. You're not getting it.

(And as critical as I msy be of John Kerry, I don't begrudge the bastard LUNCH).

GravatarTina, late to the dance, but I have to comment: You have a lesbian Latina Democrat sheriff in TEXAS?

Four strikes against her. I'm impressed. She must be hell on wheels.

As for joining Mexico, I'd really hate to need to screw with insurance and all that other crap just to visit Big Bend and the coast. On the other hand, the idea of Tom DeLay as a Mexican is just awesome.

On the Sequoia, I guess I think it should be in the hands of the Smithsonian and that Carter should never have sold it. And that $2 mill is not that much compared to all the rest. I'm way more pissed that Shrub, et al, claim that they have a good reason to fly somewhere and make a grandstanding appearance (see "Mission Accomplished") at taxpayer expense. And worse, do one of those and then go raise a few million at a dinner and only pay for the ride to and from the dinner.

And I wonder how much it costs to fly the whole entourage to and from Texas, too. That 40% vacation time didn't come cheap.

GravatarMYOB,

If they tried it, they would have to get it through the statehouses, but they won't, I bet, for a couple of reasons. One, Bush is getting awfully frayed around the edges. He's already looking like there's something wrong with him (wonder if he's had that physical he put off...). Second, Clinton could run again. I think he might just do it, too, if he had the chance.

Of course, I really thought there was a chance Kerry could get to the White House, too.

GravatarKonopelli -- Maybe we can use the Grand Ol' Opry stuff, too. Wonder who inserted the provision and what budget the money comes out of. Truth is, I don't really understand these omnibus bills (or most other bills, for that matter). Gravatar"And I wonder how much it costs to fly the whole entourage to and from Texas, too. That 40% vacation time didn't come cheap."

Due to public outrage, thousands of wingers contacting their reps and the media, a congressional investagion was launched into Clinton's use of airforce one during the 94 midterm elections. Played all over the media for months.

During the 2002 mid term elections bush was constantly campaigning and not a mention about his use of airforce one.

Until citizen dems start speaking up nothing changes.

And it is important to know who benefits from these relatively minor expenditures. They add up and in toto may constitute quite a bit of tit-for-tat.

GravatarMy earlier comment was not to suggest that $2,000,000 isn't a lot of money, just that in terms of the total it isn't nearly as egregious as some other expenditures. We do need to pick our fights.

On the other hand, "Taxpayers float his boat" is awfully catchy...

GravatarAmericans have forgotten how to stand up for themselves - they have been psychologically trained to accept any shit the wealthy GOP throws at the country. In that bill, "someone" entered a line that would legally permit direct taxpayer IRS record without his/her knowledge and without any legal reason. The Birth of a Neo-Fascist Nation.

GravatarSpending a penny on a boat is insanity since our entire domestic budget they passed is LESS than the budget deficit for next year!

IE: we are paying zero for this now, it is all being paid for later. Like a giantic, monstrous Wimpy we have all decided to pay next Tuesday. Which never comes, of course.

GravatarRe: "Cache" vs. "cachet": The French pronunciation for the former is indeed "cash"; educated English speakers however once used the word in oral language with a pronunciation using a long "a" sound, in order to differentiate between "cache" and the English "cash".

Of course, there are relatively few educated English speakers today, the media being the least among them, which is where the ridiculous "cachet" pronunciation comes in.

GravatarSweet Sue, you hit the nail on the head. Bells and whistles (and a lot more) will indeed be needed.

Konopelli, thanks for the reality check on my lifeboat comment. I am, if nothing else, optimistic I suppose.

BTW, in glancing at MTP today, I noticed a poll among R's that McCain and Guiliani were tied atop the "who'd you like to see run" in 2008 sweepstakes (both had 10%), followed by Powell. Rice, Frist, Arnold and Jeb were at the bottom of the list (with 2% each I believe). I'll say it again, if Rudy (pro-choice, pro-gay rights, pro-gun control, pro-adultery) can get through the R's nomination process with all its hooey about the emergence of an evangelical influence, we all have been had.

Gravatarcs, you asked for a translation, not an analysis. I suppose I should have understood that, but we engineering and computer types tend to be a bit on the literal side.

As for just what it means, I don't really have the knowledge to answer absolutely, but my guess is that he's latched on to a "waste" that resonates with all the Arizona C&W folks.

GravatarWe should use bush's yacht and the sneak IRS info to tar all the republicans with the accusation that they sought power for its own sake, and that they are abusing power because they think bush is royalty and the rest of us are peasants.

GravatarI like the idea of taking Saddam's yacht for our President's use. Someone please follow up on that.

However, given the times we live in, is a Presidential yacht practical in any sense due to the increased need for security? Maybe cabinet officers could use it, but the security you'd have to have if the President is aboard would be extremely expensive and difficult.

GravatarWe have millions uninsured, millions more slipping into poverty. College tuition has gone up 58% in the UC sytem in CA in the last 4 years. 38% of chilren in Fresno county go to bed hungry. Fresno Unified had to eliminate librarians, and the music program from all elementary schools because of budget shortfalls. How in the fuck can anyone justify buying this boat. You all might think that 2 million is no biggies in the scheme of things, I know a school district in Fresno that would kill to have 2 million to restore their music, and library systems.

GravatarIt is a dry heat. I was there in early September and it was 108. In Kansas that would have been like wading in a sauna, but there it was just a hot day.

For whatever that's worth.

GravatarI'm serious. If the DNC isn't on the ground tomorrow running ads saying Bush took your kid's Pell grant away so he could spend the money on a yacht they're fools

I think they'll respond with (a) a strategy to remain noticeably silent, to encourage Repugs to be polite about any Demcrat-owned luxury water transport in '08 or (b) a strategy to remain noticeably silent to show the base how quietly cunning the party is in choosing its battles.

We've already had two appalling weeks of unacceptable Republican Palace bullshit since 11/03. The usual Dem sofa warriors have been more engaged since battling the "real" enemy (Libruls) and jockeying for who'll have the comfiest seating in the Dem lounge for the next four years than opposing our masters and overlords.

(Oh yeah, and fighting over who gets control of the volunteers and donors' database -- as if THIS chump is going to be their b'yatch again if the last 2 wks is a preview of the next 2-4 yrs.)

GravatarDunno, I'm of two minds. there's something to be said for getting the Sequoia into the hands of the Smithsonian.

I have a soft spot for the Sequoia, which I associate with FDR. (I read a lot of history.)

OTOH, anything to beat the Rethugs over the head with. It was largely because the Rethugs had Rush and hate radio in '93 that they were able to keep that damned haircut story going for so long.

We don't have anything comparable.

Instead, when the Rethugs blast one of our guys, Democrats on TV and the "internets" start blasting him, too. "How dare he not be perfect! He's a wimp! He's a sellout!"

GravatarJennifer, thnx for the language history tidbit. I whipped out (OK, lugged out) my Compact Edition of the Oxford English Dictionary, took the magnifying glass out of its little built-in drawer, and checked out the pronounciation: rhymes with cash, but then the Compact doesn't go through pronounciation shifts.

Now, to get further OT, how about "niche"? Oxford cites usages since the 1600's in writing and, as of this century, rhymes it with "itch." Ditto Webster's New World (1959). About 10-12 years ago I heard a marketing VP at my company say "neesh." I had great respect for this guy since he pronounced "ersatz" correctly; but, the Oxford did not support his pronounciation. However, within 2 months, everyone in marketing was saying "neesh."

Sheesh.

Increasingly, the "neesh" crowd seems to be expanding its purview--NPR (just this morning), you name it. Some people are deeply conflicted and say something like "neetch" or "nish" (more rare in my hearing).

I've been wondering if it's simply that a word long used in English, but out of common parlance, came back through the marketing/PR world and was spoken by people who knew some French but didn't know the word had a long and honorable English heritage. Or, is it a Northeastern regionalism?

I grew up in the Upper Midwest and only heard "niche" as
"nitch," usually applied to a small, often vaulted, recessed area in a wall, for a vase or statue or a small recessed seating area.

GravatarThat's a flat-out pay-off to the Gaylord family which owns virtually all the media in Oklahoma, as well as Opryland and virtually controls the CMHF, in Nashville, iirc...

For what it's worth, the Gaylord family hasn't been running Gaylord Entertainment since 2001, and they are no longer the largest stockholder, having sold nearly six million shares in April. The largest shareholder in Gaylord Entertainment is now Gabelli Funds, based in NYC.

Gaylord Entertainment presently owns and operates the Grand Ole Opry, Opryland Hotel, the Ryman Auditorium, the General Jackson riverboat, the Wildhorse Saloon in downtown Nashville, WSM-AM, and a golf course near Opryland in east suburban Nashville, as well as several other hotels across the country. It also holds a minority interest in the Nashville Predators NHL franchise. It appears that WSM is Gaylord Entertainment's only remaining broadcasting operation.

The original Opryland USA theme park that Roy Acuff opened in 1972 was closed in 1997 and demolished to make way for Opry Mills, a shopping mall owned and operated by the Mills Corporation.

The Country Music Hall of Fame is, and has been since its opening in 1967, operated by the Country Music Foundation, a non-profit educational organization. It is one of 750 museums nationwide to be accredited by the American Association of Museums.

The new facility into which the CMHF moved in 2001 was funded by donations from the Country Music Foundation, the Frist Foundation, Gaylord Entertainment, Dollar General Corporation, Mike Curb, the city of Nashville, and a long list of country artists.

The facility known as the Gaylord Entertainment Center was built in 1996 as the Nashville Arena by the Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County, which continues to own and operate this facility as well as the Nashville Coliseum (formerly Adelphia Coliseum) on the east bank of the Cumberland. Gaylord Entertainment paid $80 million in 1999 for naming rights to the Arena.

The convention center across the street from both the Gaylord Entertainment Center and the Ryman Auditorium has been owned and operated by Metro government since its opening in 1985.

Gravatar'Nitch' is one of those words that's been 'de-familiarised' by being used out of its everyday context. If you showed someone, especially an older person, a recess in a wall, especially in a church, they'd say 'oh, that's a nitch'.

If you told them it was the same word, and same spelling, as 'niche', they probably wouldn't believe you.

I'm scared, though, that 'nucular' will become an Official American Pronunciation by 2008.

GravatarSorry to disappoint you but, sadly, the dems are both fools and incompetents. For the most part they supported the resolution giving Bush a blank check to go into Iraq - largely because they were afraid of the political consequences of voting against Bush. Now we must all suffer the consequences of their cowardice - four more years of Bush and no living thing.

"I am completely disappointed by your vote in favor of the omnibus appropriations bill. From my point of view, this was even worse -- no, I'll be blunt -- stupider than your vote for the fraudulent Medicare reform bill. You now realize that you unwittingly voted in favor of a sweeping invasion of Americans' tax returns; I wonder whether this will help you come to the realization that the Republican congressional leadership should not be trusted AT ALL, and your constituents do not expect you to cooperate with legislation that undermines basic American freedoms.

Please tell me you learned something from this. Otherwise I am faced with the dilemma of deciding whether there is any difference between an enemy and an incompetent friend."

GravatarSensing his end approach, Mobutu retreated to the only safe shelter for him in the country -- his heavily guarded yacht on the Congo River. Western powers insisted that Mobutu step down, but he strategically ignored them, forcing them to carry out their threats of embargo and sanctions. Bretton Woods institutions suspended their cooperation and withdrew their financial assistance. Other international organizations followed suit.

GravatarYacht?

He really thinks he's a king.

Maybe we need to do what the Russian people did in 1917.

Where is a "suicider" when we need one?

Gravatar-- USS "Mission Accomplished"

-- I think the most apropos ho-majjj to the whole cash of pretentious usage-manglers, with their hollow cashay born of desperation, would be to cement the lot of them into a neesh.

I also dislike the still-favored custom of using "an" instead of "a" before words beginning with H. "An" homage, my ass. I don't know why people stick with this pretentious, phony anachronism. It is about as authentic a mark of distinction as a tuxedo t-shirt.

GravatarLittle Bro: Silent "h," use "an." It derives from being easier to pronounce.

So, "an homage," "an honor," but "a history," "a hysterical outburst of pedantic grammar mongering."

But, seriously, anyone know if "neesh" pronunciation for "niche" is a regionalism or neologism (so not sure of the last term's applicability)?

GravatarThe printed bill they voted on was apparently 14 inches high, and presented to them about a half-hour before the vote.

This is simply wrong, wrong, wrong. How can they get away with this crap again and again.

Big stinks should be made about this, and about the IRS thing, and let's not forget how they're sneaking in actual legislation into all this pork as well. Now hospitals and clinics can tell you they won't let you have an abortion with absolutely NO repercussions.

And if we're not on the phone with our reps first thing tomorrow about this crap there's something wrong with US.

GravatarThomas Jefferson [et fucking AL] would want that yacht blown the fuck up while these fucking neofeudalists look on in security and happiness thinking everything's fine. *He wouldn't want anyone hurt*, but a "US presidential yacht" really fucking needs to not exist. What are the Secret Service über-patriot types thinking when they hear about this?

GravatarWhen we write to our papers about this boat W wants, make sure to call it a $2 million boat.

A $2 million 104 foot antique boat so he can take his fatcat donors on boat rides in style. No Lincoln Bedroom slumber partise for these people, no no. They get the boat ride on the $2 million boat.

It's not just any boat, it's a $2 million boat.

How many hours of college for kids with Pell grants would that pay for? How many sets of body armor for troops in harm's way? But that's not important. What's important is a $2 million boat for W to take his rich friends for boat rides on.

"What Would Republicans Do..."

Dems will win when they start THINKING like Republicans - imagine if Kerry got a Yacht, what would Republicans do. Start there and THEN you'll start winning!

GravatarCarter goofed when he sold the presidential yacht. The president should have a yacht so he can entertain foreign heads of state and others. Sure, if Democrats are totally intellectually bankrupt they can waste money on dumb ads criticizing a presidential yacht, and if Atrios is still in campaign mode, he can flush his own money down the toilet on his dumb idea for ads.

GravatarDems can't run ads criticizing Bush's yacht because so many of them stupidly voted for the bill.

I'm really getting sick of this.

GravatarPainfully obvious, yes, the need for Dems to hit this hard and fast. Equally important is the need to do it in such a way as to remind libertarians and "conservatives" (the ones who don't like these shenanigans but think the GOP is the 'lesser evil') that the Repubs are NOT their party.

They're corporate fascists posing as populists. Expose them. Every day.

He only makes 400 grand a year and gets called every name from Hitler to Satan by every liberal DemocRAT in the country, and countless lies have been told about him for almost four years now. GravatarLet us not play stupid, Dems. This is about the smallest issue out there. You may go apoplectic at the meer mention of the word yacht, but most people don't. Especially when the Repugs remind us that John Kennedy went on many cruises on this same boat, cryers of doom will look pretty dumb.

Yep.

Lies like "he's a decent man," and "he's a Christian," and "he's God's own president" and "he's a compassionate person" and "he's a human being" and "he's intelligent" and "he's competent" and "he's got good people working for him" and "he's not a traitor to this country" and "he's not a poison to democracy" and many other such things.

Countless lies.

GravatarThe yacht -- it's a visual. Voice over re Congress, money, whatever, while running tape of this boat that 98 percent of us can't afford.

Tax returns -- another visual. Roll Nixon with a voiceover that hits enemies lists, the depths of Watergate, the Republicans getting drunk with power again, etc.

DeLay vote -- roll tape showing a perp walk (any tangentially related RepubliTexan perp will do), voice over about Repubs allowing indicted felons to retain powerful Congressional offices, etc.

It all translates into visuals that people will respond to. Do a Karl Rove with this stuff. We're already into the next election cycle, dammit.

GravatarAre y'all sure it's the Sequoia and not another yacht?

The Sequoia cost $5 million to upgrade. Rents for $10,000 for 4 hours (according to their website)

Why would they sell at a loss of $3 million?

However, there is another Presidential Yacht out there in need of restoration.

An organization has been formed with the goal of returning Williamsburg to the US for restoration and preservation. The USS Williamsburg Preservation Society may be contacted at 262 McLaws Circle, Suite 203, Williamsburg, VA 23187. Photo courtesy of the USS Williamsburg Preservation Society.

GravatarThe Dems are still polling to see what to do next.

As Carville said, the purpose of a political party is to win elections.

Apparently this is the new goal of Democrats everywhere: emulate the GOP and keep your job. Fuck the New Deal. Fuck the Great Society. This is all about job security.

GravatarI think Dems have to be really careful on this.

Criticism could back fire if it turns out the intention was to buy a boat in need of renovation.

Also google another Presidential yacht in need of renovation: ARAS.

The period during which a developing fetus is carried within the uterus. In humans, pregnancy
averages 266 days (38 weeks) from conception to childbirth. Traditionally, pregnancy duration
is counted from the woman's last menstrual period, which adds roughly 2 weeks to gestational
age. This is how physicians arrive at a pregnancy length of 40 weeks (280 days).
