Well, considering Bush never admits to a mistake, the answer must be: We're doing great!

We are in the same position the Soviet military was in Afghanistan in the 1980s. We are there to provide protection for a government we're trying to prop up, basically choosing sides in a civil war. Our presence isn't great enough to tip the scales in our favor so all we are doing is protracting the conflict. The best we can hope for at this point is a graceful exit, which seems unlikely considering how Rumsfeld runs things.

I think there is a question of "Can any amount of additional force tip the balance in favor of a regime that is perceived as illegitimate?"
As I see it, the answer may well be "No", as additional force just creates more ability to commit acts which underscore the popular perception of illegitimacy.

Dumb ol' Colin wanted to stay around longer and be mean to the Israelis and make them share with the ugly, dirty Arabs that don't believe in God, but Condi whispered, No, my Little Prince-ling, we're N-E-O-C-O-N-S now, we have a MAN DATE, we don't have to share with smelly A-rabs. At some point, the church had to admit that the world was round, but it took an awfully long time.
You ought to say "the Earth and planets revolve around the Sun, rather than the Sun and planets around the Earth" instad of "the world was round", since the church held the Ptolemaic, geocentric, round-earth model from its earliest days until it finally accepted a heliocentric model.

OT,
Okay, I apologize for going OT so quickly, but, and this is pretty funny, while the word is that John Roberts, naturally, is going to take over for Dan Rather, there is another rumor circulating that CBS is going to look to change their target audience and go after Brit Hume.
The people at Black Rock deny this, of course.

In light of the fact that twice as many Iraqi children are dying of starvation now than Saddam, our presence is disasterous. If the Lancet is even half right, 50,000 deaths, damn I'm getting depressed.

5000 quatloos says we will make a hasty retreat from Iraq after it's "election"
As I understand it, the Mayan end of the world isn't like Christian Armegeddon, but the end of a 5,000 year cycle. So conceivably what comes after "the world as we know it" could actually be something better. (Age of Aquarius, anyone?) Though I think a rough transition is implied.
Someone more knowledgeable than I is free to correct me.

As I recall, the end of the cycle that ends in 2012 is the end of one of many cycles in the Mayan calendar, the longest cycle of which is several orders of magnitude longer than the currently believed age of the universe.

As I understand it, the Mayan end of the world isn't like Christian Armegeddon, but the end of a 5,000 year cycle.

This segment was taped in Minnesota. She felt that this type of education would allow them to make better choices later on. Again, it didn't work for cigs and drugs. Why will this be different, especially when hormones are raging.
Another enlightened fellow said that condoms don't prevent aids in 1 out of 7 instances, and *those aren't very good odds* so it's better to not have sex, better to not make condoms available.
Of course, others noted that the chance of STD's and pregnancy would only increase. And the kids all knew where to get condoms if they weren't given out at school (gas stations, etc).

The End Of The World As We Know It.
Hey ... it's REM. What a great song. No dount the chimp sings that every morning in the shower.
But in the meantime the 4th Estate is so useless that they can't even report how badly this is going and how badly things are going at home. However, if they did report it the sheeple would not believe them and that is the real tragedy of America at this time.

the "war" is lost. end of story. the longer we stay the worse it gets. and unlike vietnam, this time it matters. which is of course why it was a mistake to take it on in the first place. even if you agreed with the notion of holding saddam accountable (which i did) dumbass rushed in with his pants down around his ankles and now he's tripping all over the place. but he doesn't give a fuck, he'll still manage to walk away personally enriched in some way. fuck'n retard.
and to reiterate incognito "this is the end my freind, the only end."
really associating the war in iraq with the "war on terror" was a collasal screw up. screwing up the war in iraq is beyond collasal. as the man said "if you make the wrong choice, chances are we will be attacked again..." i think they don't give a shit, would just give them a chance to further consolidate their power through fear.

Same-sex couples joined together in a civil union have the same rights regarding their children as do heterosexual couples, a judge in Vermont ruled, contradicting an earlier court decision in Virginia, according to a newspaper report.
The ruling last week by Judge William Cohen conflicts with an earlier Virginia court's ruling, which gave only the biological parent custody of the child.
Cohen said that Janet Miller-Jenkins of Fair Haven, Vermont has the same rights as a parent of two-year-old Isabella as does Lisa Miller-Jenkins, who gave birth to her using artificial insemination before the couple split up, the Rutland Herald reported on Sunday. Lisa Miller-Jenkins now lives in Virginia with the child, the daily noted.
"Parties to a civil union who use artificial insemination to conceive a child can be treated no differently than a husband and wife who, unable to conceive a child biologically, choose to conceive a child by inseminating the wife with the sperm of an anonymous donor," Cohen ruled.
A judge in Virginia had ruled earlier that only the biological mother could have custody of the child.
Cohen noted that under those same rules, "the husband would be no more than a mere stepparent and would be required to adopt the child in order to be considered a parent in the eyes of the law.
"This argument is without merit," he concluded...

Actually, the Guardian reports Whitehall is playing down that supposed threat;
Possibly because every Britain knows that Canary Wharf would actually be a comparitively less shocking target for attack; unlike Heathrow, Canary Wharf is famous for being an unloved failure. The most famous tenant of said tower block, which was supposed to revitalise the Docklands...? BCCI. The project designed to re-revitalise that area after that didn't go down too well either; an enormous white gonad for some reason didn't play as well with the public as it did with the collection of artists and cabinet members that agreed to it...

I agree w/ the judge's decision, but it's always interesting to me that they only get it if you put it in terms that threaten partiarchy.
I don't think the decision has anything to do with patriarchy; I think the analogy was to ground it in existing law, particularly as, in the case of civil unions, they are expressly to be treated as having the same rights as exist in marriages, though its hard to tell without the full decision.
But then, I don't see saying that the husband has equal parental rights as the mother of a child by artificial insemination is a particularly patriarchal judgement, in any case.

If you don't see the partiarchial bias underlying this decision, you're part of the problem, not part of the solution. There were many grounds for reaching the decision that the judge reached. Interesting that this is the one that resonated.
BTW, you might want to find out whether or not they play a law school version of bingo at the institution you'll be attending. It will help you to understand why the others will yell out "Bingo" whenever you raise your hand and offer your version of the truth in class.

Some of the upthread comments are hitting the new meme for the future of Iraq. Bushco has decided that the troops are causing the insurgency, so if the troops go home, the insurgency will end.
From the Boston Globe via TruthOut:
"A growing number of national security specialists who supported the toppling of Saddam Hussein are moving to a position unthinkable even a few months ago: that the large US military presence is impeding stability as much as contributing to it and that the United States should begin major reductions in troops beginning early next year."
So we've destroyed the country, killed 100,000 civilians, and created a thousand Bin Ladens. But now we're "impeding stability?"
I'm sure a thousand military families would have rather heard this meme acted on a year ago.

If you don't see the partiarchial bias underlying this decision, you're part of the problem, not part of the solution. There were many grounds for reaching the decision that the judge reached.
Its also possible that I am not all that knowledgable about Vermont family law, even compared to my limited knowledge in other areas, and I don't see all these "many grounds" that you claim exist that wouldn't be explained with a similarly "patriarchal" analogy to marriage.
But, I guess its easier to just wave your hand and dismiss me as "part of the problem" rather than showing me where I am wrong and convincing me, right?
Interesting that this is the one that resonated.
Its hard to tell from the media report that its even "the one" that resonated; many times, a legal decision will make several points, and media reports, when they excerpt the decision, will excerpt those points they find most interesting for their readers, which aren't, always, the most important or legally significant, as often neither the reporters nor their intended audience are particularly knowledgeable about the law.
But, even assuming it is, I don't see anything patriarchal about it.

hmm, i'm no nostradamos, a month ago i'd so no way, now...
I think they'll declare victory after the election and pull out. When civil war breaks out, they'll blame it on an inability of brown people to govern themselves.
good guess, they won't do it unless they have to.
However, if they did report it the sheeple would not believe them and that is the real tragedy of America at this time.

what the fuck is an RFID tag
Radio Frequency IDentification
Essentially, usually, a short range radio transceiver that, when interrogated by an appropriate transmitter, "squawks" its identification in response so that it can be identified; some are stronger powered, IIRC, and can be used for location.

But of course we could not find a soldier captured in Iraq? Just curious, IIRC I read something about it as the latest technology of our military.

General,
Dawna doesn't understand the double entrende, and I sometimes have a problem reading deeper into the intended message. It's a tough one, and might take a couple of cups of coffee. The mayor of Omaha has declared that flags will fly at half staff in honor of a young Marine killed in Iraq on Nov. 15th. His daughter was born the same day.
Let us never forget that this war didn't have to happen. Bush didn't have the integrity to sacrifice a econo-political maneuver for the sake of humanity.
I hope that at least BushCo will declare "victory" and pull out after elections. After which, the country will disintegrate in a civil war. To prevent this, we'd have to stay there for 40 years. What a sickening mess.

"He redeemed my soul after I promised not to complain when Con-Agra took my farm."
I agree. There's nothing quite as comforting as knowing that we are being gazed upon voyeristically by a buff Caucasian Jesus who could hold his own (or those of others) in the manly-man world of the Captains of Industry, whether participating in a game of jodhpur-sweat-soaked polo, a steamroom inquisition or a backroom cigar-fondling and pocket-billiards session.

Ramzi Yousef's most recent distinction is his status as the resident of the most expensive studio apartment in the history of the world. His 7 by 12 foot luxury suite comes complete with convenient toilet in the living room, 13-inch black and white TV and the handy chute through prison guards slide his delicious meals.
It cost hundreds of millions of dollars to build the Colorado Supermax prison, and somewhere significantly upwards of $20 million to keep it secure each year, and that doesn't even include free HBO.

Major difference is, we have further to slide, to the 4th Hell-realm, than Iraq did after 15 years of God-awful sanctions, after another Bush bombing in 1991.
But our time is coming; just wait. Economic End-times anyone?

The second we leave (or even before), Iraq's neighbors move in to protect their various brethren.....Does Chalabi get a cut from IRan's new oil fields in Iraq?...
Just imagine, Turks, Kurds, arabs and Persians fighting each other for the oil fields... I'm sure the neocons will call this victory somehow... "at least they're not fighting us!"... or something.

Autism (or one of it's components such as PDD and Ausbergers) can involve an expressive language disability, a fear of social interactions (involving questions being asked by people in groups) and an inability to remember simple rote facts in a tense situation (which would be helped by a assistative technology device such as a prompter, a spell check or a recorder). But it's preemptive component is fear, because there are so many stressors on the individual, and they don't have the ability to filter out, focus and perform.

A personality which has issues with comprehending the whole from the parts, integrating the details and admitting they exist, I'm just saying... it's been seen before, documented, and bush is making no attempt to admit this issue, or addressing it. And worse, noone is calling him on it.

Iraq will descend further into chaos.
In January they'll hold some fake elections (kinda like the ones we have here sometimes) and then they'll call it done.
Troops will remain, to secure the military bases we'll be keeping in Iraq for years to come.
The media will dutifully stop reporting on anything happening in Iraq that might be considered bad, since it might put a negative light on Our Dear Leader.

Slowly, very slowly, the story about what has happened in Falluja is emerging. The numbers of killed and wounded civilians might never be known but we do know that hospitals were flooded with wounded Iraqis, 80% of the 300,000 residents of Falluja fled to neighboring towns, US troops and their Iraqi counterparts destroyed the town, and the U.S. refused access to trucks carrying humanitarian aid. There are also narratives about starving and wounded Iraqis, more than 50 dead and hundreds of wounded US military personnel, the deaths of 1200 "insurgents" and the arrest of approximately 1500 more, a US marine killing an injured and unarmed Iraqi in a mosque, and the discovery of hostage houses where hostages might have been tortured and slain. One needs to remember that most of these reports emanate from either military personnel or reporters embedded with U.S. troops. Occasionally, refugee stories have reached the media, but the lack of coverage from varying perspectives, ten!

A commentary by Tom Engelhardt and Jonathan Schell offers a collage of materials from eyewitness reports in Fallujah, mainly appearing in the mainstream media:
"Even the dogs have started to die, their corpses strewn among twisted metal and shattered concrete in a city that looks like it forgot to breathe. The aluminum shutters of shops on the main highway through town have been transformed by the force of war into mangled accordion shapes, flat, sharp, jarring slices of metal that no longer obscure the stacks of silver pots, the plastic-wrapped office furniture, the rolls of carpet...
[T]he Insurgents were putting up their most tenacious resistance as U.S. and Iraqi forces pursued them through a bleak landscape of bombed-out cinder block factories and houses reminiscent of the movie Blade Runner Driving down Highway 10, the main street running east to west through the heart of Fallujah, is like entering a film that is set sometime on the other side of Armageddon. Restaurant signs were covered in soot. Pavements were crushed by 70-ton Abrams tanks, and rows of crumbling buildings stood on both sides of deserted streets. Upmarket homes with garages looked as if they had been abandoned for years. Cars lay crushed in the middle of streets.

I've noted the similarity between "Red Dawn" and Bush's war. How strange....when you invade a country for no reason then call the residents of that country "rebels" for fighting back....

At some point we need to assess our -- and their -- realistic options before the country is damaged to the point that it isn't salvagable. I'm not sure which cliche to apply: "be careful not to bite off more than you can chew;" "the beatings will continue until morale improves;" or "when you find yourself in a hole, stop digging."

None of the above. It's genocide to install airbases.
And that's ALL it is.
Keep killing until the place is yours. That's the old Hitler motto, and Bush likes it just fine.
