You know what them Ukrainians need? A good murder trial where a pretty white pregnant woman is offed. Or gays getting married. Then they'd stay home and be properly distracted. Who do they think they are, exercising their democratic rights to fair elections anyway?

what is the deal anyway?
Are we ever going to protest the scam that was this past US election?
At minimum, will we ever get any satisfactory answer for why the exit polls were so incredibly wrong in so many key states???
Grrr.

The irony of Washington's threats against Ukraine regarding the election fraud is almost too rich to be true.
Let's see, exit polls don't match the vote count, country is split 47-53, I feel like I've seen this scenario played out before.....
Apparently our official foreign policy is to have no shame.
Happy Thanksgiving to all, please enjoy yourselves and the company of your family and friends.
As bad as things are looking for the reality-based right now, it's good for all of us to remember that there are still plenty of reasons for hope and faith.

..We are very comfortable here and take way too much for granted. It would take a lot - a whole lot - to get us out in the streets protesting, I believe. We actually take authoritarian power without a real whimper and will sit down and shut up when told. Many Europeans and people from the British Isles have told us so on the blogs before and I believe them. The question is, "what would it take and how long would it take to get that result?" In my opinion it would take a world class shattering of the "world order" here across the whole country. Actually, under the surface people are kind of tense right now, but there is no trigger and no real sense of enough problems with the election to engender that kind of response...yet...My guess is if the people who were against the result started to protest, there would be violent reaction to that by the people who supported Bush.

I know you are being sarcastic here, but shit, this is important.
If there was SOME sort of mass organized protest, I would take a few days off work to go.
I said before the election if there is any funny business, I will go out and protest. But I'm not going to go alone, and unfortunately no one seems to be organizing anything.
The best I can hope for is that there is a mass protest at the boy-kings coronation. I will definitely go to that if there is something planned.

When Reagan's and Bush I's terrorism succeeded in Nicaragua and they voted for the corrupt and incompetent Violetta C. Noam Chomsky pointed out that the people of the United States wouldn't have resisted anywhere near as long. The reaction to the 2000 election demonstrated that he was probably right, the failure of the U.S. population to insist or real electoral reform proves him right.
We've got to take our elections back. It must give rise to great hilarity around the world to have the most famous beneficiary of a stollen election lecturing Uks about honest elections. It should make everyone here blush with shame but ignorance is bliss. And our media will make sure it stays that way.
Yeah, it looks like it was stollen too but who are we to throw stones.

I do find it funny (OK ironic and sad) that the Bushies are asking Ukraine not to certify the election until allegations of fraud are looked into. This from people who couldn't get Kerry to concede fast enough. And why are liberal blogs the only place where anyone points out that irony?

Unfortunately, Cheney_USA is right, the press would open up a whole new can of whoopass on people with brains, but that doesn't mean that it shouldn't be done. We should be in the streets. Even if it does no good, and it probably wouldn't, we can and should LOUDLY speak the truth to the world, that we know what is being done. We owe it to the people with brains.

Why can't we organize a protest through this blog?
You want an effective protest, boycott Christmas. If you must buy buy from No Sweats, Equal Exchange coffees, Ox Fam America's store or any number of other, non-profit or non-exploitative sources.
A two percent downturn in Christmas buying linked to protest against the corrupt elections would scare them to death. A larger one could disrupt the Republican majority's plans. Money is the only thing they care about, witholding ours is our most powerful tool.
Continue the CNNclaire boycott. Carville, Begalla, Brazil, resign in disgust or be sullied in history.

The only way you'd see this kind of uprising in the US is if gasoline overnight went up to $5 a gallon. And maybe not even then.
People in this country are fat and complacent. They assume things will go on pretty much as they always have, and in that they are pretty much correct - rights will continue to be eroded, the tax burden will continue to be shifted, wealth will continue to accumulate in the hands of the few. But like the frog in the pan of water slowly being heated, as long as they have their reality TV, their SUV, their McMansion and their cheap gasoline, they don't notice and they don't care.
It would take the threat of them losing their material comfort to get them off their asses. And of course, by then, the damage will be done.
Apologies to those of you who desperately want to believe we're better than this (and to those of you who ARE better than this - which means the vast majority of posters here). But in terms of who's really paying attention, we are, sadly, a small minority.

Just not buying isn't enough. We need to write and tell stores, the media, and credit card companies why we're not buying and when we'll start again, for example when we have a verifiable vote for everyone in America.
DC will be locked down too tight when Lame Duckie gets coronated. They learned that they could do it during the campaign.
But the blogs and the internets could organize a no-buy-xmas, esp. if we could get a group like MoveOn involved.

Fed up,
Yeah, I have to admit that's true. I read "Man in Full" and found it mildly entertaining, but a little too Horatio Alger, which is usually a sign of Republican leanings. As you say, he was a little obsessed with the day-to-day life of a rich cracker. Another drawback to that book is that he writes terrible dialogue for black characters...
I just can't understand how he went from hangin' with the Hell's Angels and Ken Kesey (I loved EKAT) to supporting GWB. Did the man ever have any integrity?

It was always just Ukraine to the Ukrainians (not Russians, btw), and "the" Ukraine to the Russians, who liked to pretend that is was just a part of Russia, and not a nation in its own right.
The party in power (communists in "democrat" suits) was so corrupt that they felt they could run anyone and falsify the election so as to continue their kleptocratic reign. They nominated a mafia-connected criminal with previous convictions for assault, theft and rape. And the people objected.
They tried to kill the opposition candiate twice, once in an auto accident, and once with poison.
The vote fraud was massive and, without Diebold, has been easily documented. Millions of extra absentee ballots, >100% voter turnout at many precincts, and malreporting of actual counts. Independent and opposition poll/count watchers were ejected from many precincts in which the fraud was allowed to occur.
There are a million people in the streets of Kiev today, braving cold and snow. Kuchma (the current president) is guarded by Russian special forces because he doesn't trust Ukrainian soldiers not to turn on him. And the army is unlikely to support the government against the people.

Yeah, njpineygal-- I have the typical Amerikan brain-block for geography, and it doesn't help when countries change their names. I can sort of remember that "Burma" is now "Myanmar," but not easily. And for all I know it may be something else by now. I won't venture further than this into literary criticism, but I used to like Wolfe because he was in the vanguard of New Journalism. He had a sharp eye for detail and hypocrisy. Today's Repugs and the religious right would have been prime targets for Wolfe 30 years ago, but not today. He seems more interested in the sex lives of college kids and making hit and run stockbrokers and crooked real estate developers seem picked upon.

Are we ever going to protest the scam that was this past US election?
The election is not, in fact, past, and existing avenues of correction within the system, particularly in Ohio though not exclusively there, are being actively pursued. I'm not entirely sure that the attention gathered by major protest would be beneficial, or if it would do more to lead to popular fatigue with the issue by the time (if it got to that point) that "normal" corrective action like the Ohio recount was exhausted and truly unusual steps like pressure on the Congress and more extreme action was necessary.

For those who didn't learn the metric system: I still can't cook in ounces and pounds, and I'm not quite sure how cold 50 Fahrenheit is. It's hard to change after the age of ten or so.
I've been following all the election "inaccuracy' stuff in some detail on the net, and essentially there is an enormous amount of circumstancial evidence. So many important indicators before the election turned out to be wrong, the exit polls were not only off but largely off in the very same direction (which is usually called bias), but nobody has given a proper explanation of why this bias would happen. Then there were all the numbers about how Democrats were signing more new voters almost everywhere, and I saw only one article before the elections about voter work through churches.
Something very odd happened. If it isn't the elections themselves that are off then the alternative explanation is that both the media failed to report on the Republicans vote-getting effort, the exit polls were wrong more than they have ever been before and that all early indicators were off, too. And I would like to see this explained.
But the explanations I have seen try to account for each of these issues with several different and quite unrelated explanations. All of these supposedly just 'happened' together.

Are we ever going to protest the scam that was this past US election?
See www.peoplejudgebush.org. There are protests slated in numerous cities Dec 11, Jan 20 and March 20. Already have had 3 here in Little Beiruit (Portland) since 11/3. One involved a ceremonial burial of the vote with a march to the Oregonian (newspaper). These were much smaller than the 50,000 we'll likely have here on 1/20, so very little media.

OT: Thanks for turning us on to Ruth Gendler's Book of Qualities a couple of weeks ago. I just got my (signed by the author) copy from her and it's wonderful.
I quit doing the shopping/presents thing a few years ago. I told all of my friends and family, "I promise I won't buy you a present if you promise you won't buy me one." I thought some of them might actually enjoy that aspect of the "holiday season" and be offended but the response was a loud and universal, "Thanks!" We use the time and money saved to get together (parties, dinners, cookie baking) instead.
My local daily had an editorial today that said basically, "OK folks, get ready to get your butts to the mall on Friday and drive yourselves further into debt to prop up the economy!"
But there are a couple of birthdays coming up in my little world and I think Ruth's going to get some more orders from me.
Link to Ruth's site for anyone who wants to check it out that missed it the first time.

In the English language "the" is stuck in front of territorial names where the territory is provisional, undefined or "out there some place," such as both the US and Canadian "Northwest Territories." People in Yukon have turned against "the Yukon" because they know what that "the" means.
OTOH just because some dictator insists that foreigners use what they think is a more authentic style of name (Kampuchea, Myanmar, Zaire) doesn't meant that the name really is authentic and won't be changed back.
And if you call your country a "Democratic Republic" in this day and age it's practically an admission that you are involved in mass murder.

It is easier to have revolutions in places like Ukraine because the entire country is the size of one of our states.
Dc is deep in Red Territory for a reason: so masses of people from the blue places have to travel a long ways to protest.
And further: we were fake revolutionaries from day one. This is why our "revolution" enshrined SLAVERY.

i'm having a WhoVille Xmas--
home-made gifts and/or bags of co-op groceries (non perishable) & Green Pages/AFL-CIO business directories for the people who might be too sad if i don't give them something.
small kids will get whatever i can find at the co-op that kids might like (they have a small selection of fair-trade toys, t-shirts, mittens, books, etc. at the one where i go.)
there is also always the Good Will Shop option--not only are you redeeming "junk" but you are also giving to a charity by shopping at such places (while staying OFF the retail consumer radar screen.)
ABSOLUTELY NO DECORATIONS, NO CARDS, NO WRAPPING PAPER (unless i have time to make them from random stuff i have around the house.)
they can steal the election, but they can't force me to be "jolly" about it!
the money thing is a good point--when people in inner-city neighborhoods form groups to try and build up their local communities, one big issue for them is how to KEEP the money they have IN THEIR COMMUNITY (shopping local, etc.) and maybe that is something that WE need to find a way to do, but in a "cyber" fashion?
OUR "community" is not all in one geographic place, but couldn't we still KEEP our money circulating in "green" or progressive circles?
this has the added benefit of enforcing our own ad-hoc sort of "economic sanctions" on the corporations that are in violation of our ethics...

Texan...all media, national and local, hype the day after Thanksgiving shopping melee. Now some retailers, most notably KMart and Sears, are staying open on Thanksgiving Day so people can buy more crap. So much for the employees enjoying a holiday with their families, something I would call a family value. The irony is so delicious. It was not enough to have the day after Thanksgiving as a big shopping day. Now the retailers want Thanksgiving Day itself, a day supposedly set aside to reflect and give thanks. Christmas, established by the Church on December 25th in part to counteract pagan celebrations surrounding the winter solstice, has itself become a pagan celebration of greed and materialism.

And further: we were fake revolutionaries from day one. This is why our "revolution" enshrined SLAVERY.
The Americal Revolution wasn't fake, it was just a rather standard regional separatist movement rather than a social revolution; both can validly be looked at as political revolutions.

Christmas, established by the Church on December 25th in part to counteract pagan celebrations surrounding the winter solstice, has itself become a pagan celebration of greed and materialism
Ahem. Actually we pagans don't espouse greed and materialism and celebrate the winter solstice with ritual, feasting, bonfires, and getting up at dawn to make noise and wake the sun back up. It's the xians who regard gift-giving as a major part of their winter holiday.

And Byzantium. Not that Constantinople is bad, either, and I'd like to see it used somewhere, but Byzantium needs to be used somewhere. Somewhere big.
Maybe rename New York (the city). I mean, there is already the original York, and there is the State of New York. That's more than enough Yorks.

Here's an idea: give the money you would have spent on presents to a kid whose Pell grant has been cut.
Then write to your red-state relatives and explain to them why they aren't getting a present. And write to the stores where you would have bought presents to explain to them why you aren't spending the money with them this year - because you're giving the gift of education to a kid that the people they supported with their political contributions tried to take away.
It's time to start connecting the dots for these people.

as to the "election" here at home:
the electoral collage meets on 12/13 to cast their certified votes, BUT THIS IS NOT THE ACTUAL END OF THE PROCESS.
Congress opens those votes and records them officially on 1/6/05...THIS is the last & final deadline of deadlines.
and of course, the instillation happens on January 20th--and there will no doubt be protest that once again no one sees on the "news."
anyway, this means there is still time for normal, legal challenges (the Ohio recount, some civil rights suits, the GAO investigation,) to turn it over.
i do not expect that to happen. but the MOST vital result would be that we are able to ensure FUTURE elections will in fact be mostly fair in terms of access, and totally transparent and also have paper trails for audit purposed. IF we can get that, then there is hope for the future.
if we can NOT get that...well...there will be no way to change anything here via voting, at any rate.
whether it turns out to be probably fair, shady at best, or a total fraud--when "Our Leader" is annointed. i want very much to get my ass to DC on 1/20 and have my say. but i'd also be happy to have my say here in the streets at home, too!
i think if we were picking dates for protests, i'd pick a Saturday in between 12/13 and 1/6...maybe 12/18? (assuming there are no happy surprises before then.)

It's the xians who regard gift-giving as a major part of their winter holiday.
Actually, its "the xians"; the consumeristic celebration of Christmas is largely a recent product of a succesful PR campaign by the retail industry, and its adherents, while overlapping with Christians, are not the same as Christians -- many non-Christians (agnostics and atheists, particularly) participate in it as a purely secular consumer "holiday", and many self-described Christians reject the consumer celebration.

We finally found the answer to my bro in laws Walmart-mentality cheese, cracker and sausage "puzzles". Once we put the stuff out for the critters and even the critters wouldn't touch it.
We now give them named donations to Doctors Without Borders. I think they got the point.
As for our elections: The only way every vote will be counted is if there are paper ballots (Oregon) or lever activated machines like we use in New York. I also think the votes should be counted by someone who doesn't actually work for a political party or the gov't directly. Maybe we could get High School students to count them. Or maybe we could get Canadians to help us count. They already use paper ballots, they would be able to advise us.

Why do you think there's a blackout on media reports on the investigations into election fraud? Information is power. They keep the information from us, we have no power.
That, my dears, is the glory of state-controlled media.

Sounds like more fun than the same old giving competition. We cut it down to drawing a single name out of our very large family. Working on just an exchage for those under 16 years but it hasn't taken yet. I'm giving my brother (who reads this blog) something I made.
Another thought on those who can't resist buying, Canada, Europe. But better get going, it takes a couple of weeks from most places.
Hecate is also right, we've got to let the sellers know why we aren't buying.

i say BEFORE 1/6, because any protest or objections to be made officially will have to come from our Reps & Senators on that date, and a showing by the public could give some folks the stones to say something (remember the beginning of Moore's 9/11 film? when the Reps from Fla were in tears, wanting to officially object, but NO senator would join them so nothing happened? THAT is what goes down in DC on the 6th...and THAT will probably be the case ewxact case again--only add Ohio Reps this time--assuming no change due to re-counts.)
12/18 looks like the only Saturday when people might show up. of course we could also try for January 5th, the day before they enroll the electoral votes...thoughts?

yes, I think lots of Americans would be prepared to trade a lot of liberty not for safety, but for
a. crappy TV
b. the establishment of Jesusism
c. cheap corn-syrup laden crap on the grocery store shelves.
The cultural memory of most Europeans extends to remember severe, terrible losses of freedom in their own homes. For some, it goes back not more than a generation. By comparison, American cultural memory extends to getting that first colour TV and a big refrigerator.

I've always found it interesting how the Christians have co-opted every pagan ritual or "holy" day for themselves...or tried to, anyway!
Not just co-opted, but also tried to beat the pagan version out of existance, as if Christianity was a sort of religious version of Wal-Mart, coming to your town and wiping out any spiritual competition.
Frankly, I love solstice, as my wife (who I think is a druid just waiting to come out of the oaken-and-holly closet).

Hey here is an idea! Why don't dems spend the money to get a cable station, like say-CNN. Then they would have a chance to put forth their philosophy, report scandals, and have hte mainstream media follow their lead. Supposed all of the people who voted for Kerry sent in $100 for this effort. That would be around $5 billion, and then the Sorsos' can take care of the rest of the tab. I would send in $100 for a bid for CNN. But dems are too lazy and hope the media imbalance problem will go away.

int argc: I think of Tom Wolfe and Hunter Thompson as a bit like Pat O'Brien and Jimmy Cagney in "Angels with Dirty Faces"-- you know, the two kids who grow up as best friends in the slums, one winding up a priest, the other a hoodlum. Wolfe/Thompson both ran with Kesey and the Pranksters, etc. for professional reasons before achieving celebrity status as writers. But Hunter was involved from the inside out, whereas Wolfe was more outside-in.
Wolfe always displayed a supercilious, elitist detachment, but his early social commentary and satire is so trenchant, insightful, colorful, and hilarious that it obscured these flaws. (If you're a fan, they're not "flaws," of course.)
I liked "The Right Stuff" a lot, especially his personification of The Press as a "Victorian Gent" who above all seeks to discover and disseminate the Proper Tone to broadcast to the masses. But eventually the reactionary, fussy aspects of his character became more pronounced. (Same as the now-insufferable P.J. O'Rourke.)
Kurt Vonnegut once wrote snippily somewhere that, in his opinion, Gore Vidal wanted an awful lot of credit just for wearing a three-piece suit. I feel about the same way about Wolfe and his meticulous obsession with clothes and material things, and his steady reactionary drift. He's not Mark Twain-- just a pompous dandy in a white linen suit.
Wolfe may have stuck his head into the Looking Glass, but he never went through it. Put another way, he was in the counterculture but not of it.

Little Brother,
Wow, that was brilliant, the whole thing.
Not sure how I feel about Kurt Vonnegut hating on Gore Vidal--they're two of my favorite authors, for cri'sake! Still, what he said about Vidal goes double for Wolfe, like you said.
For some reason, I tend that Wolfe was once styled a "satirist." If "Man in Full" was supposed to be satire, it was the most toothless I've ever seen.
Interesting that the man who started as a vigorous opponent of all hypocrisy has sunk to hypocritically attacking only the left.

Konopelli...I'll tackle the radio issue, since I'm in the biz. The FCC licensed too many stations in most markets, so a lot of radio stations simply are not economically viable as single entities. The only way to make money in radio today is to own several stations in a market. I work in a medium market. All the stations are group owned, and only one group of stations is owned by a local individual.

xtians have nothing to do with it. retailers are the ones pushing holidays as purchasing occasions. That's why they keep inventing new ones (did you know the Super Bowl is now a major element in many retailers' first quarter revenue plans? i think it's a huge component of pizza delivery sales targets). For instance, look at them co-opting the ultimate in pagan holidays, halloween:
"Halloween fills an important retail void between back-to-school and the holiday season," said NRF President and CEO Tracy Mullin. "Many retailers are carving out quite a niche for themselves in the Halloween market."
by the way. in addition to not buying crap this year, think about cancelling credit cards. or at least punishing them severely by paying off in full, and on time, every month.

Hey you guys, if you really want to help students out, contact your local college or university- they're always trying to fund scholarships or increase the level of endowments to reach more kids.
Anyone who wants some information or help in doing this email me.
Giving to an endowment is something that keeps on giving year after year- and believe me, education is going to continue to get hit.

dirtgirl - We've been paying our credit card bills off in full every month for years. I made the mistake of running a Visa card up and trying to pay it off in minimum payments years ago. and we ultimately borrowed money and paid if off and paid off the loan much easier.
It's insane to do anything other than pay off credit cards every month in full. And I only have 3, one of which is a gas card.

Two points:
There was NO debate that the Ukranian election was stolen, since they had armed thugs steal the votes. No rumors of mysterious Diebold, no claims of voter supression. Just strong armed theft. And plenty of real witnesses to crimes.
I think if the GOP stole ballot boxes with armed criminals, people might object in the land of 200m guns. Remember, Americans didn't want election observers. The Dems remained silent when a few Congressmen actually called for them.
This wasn't subtle, this was Putin-inspired raw criminality. Even the blind knew what was going on.
They stuffed ballot boxes without shame. It was the kind of election fraud which was quickly confirmed.
Not Diebold, which the best argument for fraud is that it happened and no one can prove it. Yes, that argument is bound to be taken seriously. It happened, but it can't be seen. And everyone is keeping their mouths shut.
Conjecture is NOT evidence. I believe a range of tactics were used to supress the vote. But because I believe it doesn't mean I can prove it, unlike in Ukraine.
Ok, you think it's clever to send gifts to Doctors Without Borders in your red state relatives names? How would you like it if they sent gifts to pro-life organizations in your name? Not a lot, right?
Moral superiority often reeks of arrogance and smugness to most people.
Don't use gifts to make a point. Because it may well blow up in your face.
Two, stop with the lefty "oh we will only be pure shoppers" this year.
I have a simple solution. It won't take much effort and will actually make sense: don't shop at Wal-Mart.
You don't have to do anything else. You can buy Nike, go to Starbucks, buy a five year old Grant Theft Auto: San Andreas.
Just stay out of Wal-Mart and their cannabalistic, kill American jobs, practices.
You want to do something good for America, the Democratic Party, and working people, avoid Wal-Mart at any and all costs. No matter the convience level or price.

Mike...I'm with you. I never shop on the Friday after Thanksgiving. But I'm afraid we're fighting an uphill battle. Materialism is the true American religion, not Christianity. If we were truly a Christian nation, our society would be radically different. We are a nation that gives a lot of lip service to Christianity, but by and large, we do not live it. No, materialism is our religion; greed is our dogma.

Grr. Stupid helloscan. Well, just imagine that what I typed was spaced correctly.
Anyway, other examples: Chartres Cathedral is likely built on the ground where the Druids used to meet to elect their Archdruid; according to Caesar, these elections where held in the territory of the Carnutes tribe, who gave their name to Chartres
The Pantheon in Rome was, obviously, a Pagan temple before being converted into a Church.

In Webb City, Missouri, the American Civil Liberties Union filed a lawsuit in federal court today against a high school that twice punished a student for wearing t-shirts bearing gay pride messages and banned him from wearing the shirts to school again.
...
Although Mathewson had worn one of the shirts to school at least six times before without incident, Principal Stephen P. Gollhofer now claims he was concerned the t-shirts might offend other students. Students with opposing beliefs on the same issues are allowed to express their views, as anti-gay t-shirts and bumperstickers are common in the hallways at Webb City High School, the ACLU said.

Tena,
There was a great, but completely horrifying Frontline on PBS last night about credit card companies.
A panel of consumers all said they keep a balance on their credit cards, but have plenty of money in savings. When asked why they don't pay off their cards, they all answered with a variation of: "I want to keep a nest egg for emergencies?"
I just about fell off the couch! Whatever happened to spending actual money to buy stuff and saving the credit cards for emergencies?

My first post....I have been following the Ukrainian election for a while...I really want to give the Ukrainian people credit. The Yuschenko supporters seemed to have been able to stage a peaceful demonstration, and the fact that the Yanukovych camp appears to back-pedalling into a second certified election means that the Ukrainian people have been effective in pointing out the corruption of the party in power. I am not from Ukraine, but it appears to me that Yuschenko is the progressive, reformist candidate. I believe that the fact that Putin and the Duma fully support and backed Yanukovych proves that Yanukovych is the "status-quo" candidate, and for Ukraine's sake, in order to mature as a country, and provide more opportunities for its people, it should become more than a satellite state of Russia.

I don't think there is any hope. Just get used to things they way they are. Protest wont make any diffeerence. As long as the republicans control all of the media outlets, then repubs will continue winning. I don't think there is any hope. Just get used to things they way they are. Protest wont make any diffeerence. As long as the republicans control all of the media outlets, then repubs will continue winning. Theodoric, my first (and only) wife was a Republican. Parents were GOP. Grandparents GOP. But then I sat down with her and we simply listed out all political issues that we could think of, and I had her write down her position on each issue. She was shocked when she realized that she supported the Demo or progressive side of each and every issue. She turned out to be much more liberal than I. And from my unscientific investigation into this, I have found that this is quite a common thing. Way too many, particulalry in this country, simply adopt the party of their ancestors, without question, and vote that way without thinking. Like religion. And as the fundies/born agains appear to constitute a large chunk of the electorate, it really is fair to state that politics is religion in this country. That scares me more than anything.

You are correct. I really do miss living in the EU for reasons such as this. Christmas is nowhere near as materialistic or advertised as it is here. Just like during their political campaigns. No political adverts in many countries. So nice.

I think the station's market value is around 7bill
OTOH, I think that the corporate parent is likely to overvalue it because the centralized control allows them to do direct co-branding and cross-promotion without having to engage in external business deals; in fact, it seems sometimes that CNN has become nothing but co-branded cross-promotion.

Bubba...I'm mostly familiar with Germany. They have really nice open air Christmas markets, but overall German Christmas is not materialistic, which is surprising in such an overwhelmingly secular society. While I don't follow German politics as closely as I once did, I will venture to say that German elections are very much about real issues. But then, it's a parliamentary system, so parties have more clearly defined platforms and there is greater participation by the citizens.

Actually, I read somewhere that people in the Middle Ages actually spent more time on holiday and less time working than we do today, but I can't remember where I read it.
I've actually read that this is generally true of agragrian pre-industrial societies, not particularly specific to Middle Age Europe -- though at the heavy work times (harvest, etc.) there was more work that needed to be done, most of the time there was less.
One of the major effects of industrialization was to "allow" most people to work like the most intense periods of work year round, and even more, since they were able to work into the night.
"Labor saving" machinery does nothing of the sort; it just increase the output of labor, which can be good, if it works to the benefit of the laborer, but more often than not it works to the benefit of the narrow group that owns the machinery.

What are you waiting for?
Remember 2000?
A KEY ISSUE FOR INTERESTED ATRIOSANS IS TO FIND ONE SENATOR WHO WILL STAND UP.
Writing emails and making phone calls to SENATORS (and Congresspersons) to support the call for GAO investigation is CRUCIAL.
Summer solstice = Ascension & Pentecost, 7 weeks after Easter Sunday. Used to be a great occasion for feasts etc. The liturgy for both those solemnities calls for incense and a beautiful extra song called a sequence, with texts dating back to the 1200s. But I digress.
Was it Thersites who suggested I make a trifle to complement Mr. Strawhat's pumpkin pie for our T-day dessert? Thanks for the inspiration. I found a recipe that features a bittersweet chocolate pudding, a cranberry/orange/candied ginger/Grand Marnier filling, whipped cream with more candied ginger and Grand Marnier, and pound cake with more Grand Marnier. Mon dieu. It's going to be *fabulous.*

14 House Dems Demand GAO Election Probe
A BUZZFLASH READER CONTRIBUTION
by Matthew Cardinale
"Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky (D-IL) has asked to become the 14th signatory of the GAO letter demanding an investigation in electronic voting. This information was confirmed by a staffer, Theresa, in the U.S. House Judiciary Office, on November 22, 2004.
As of this writing, Schakowsky's signature has not been submitted to the GAO.
However, the GAO has received letters of concern with 13 signatories thus far:
John Conyers (D-MI)
Jerrold Nadler (D-NY)
Robert Wexler (D-FL)
Robert Scott (D-GA)
Melvin Watt (D-NC)
Rush Holt (D-NJ)
Tammy Baldwin (D-WI)
Louise Slaughter (D-NY)
George Miller (D-CA)
John Olver (D-MA)
Bob Filner (D-CA)
Gregory Meeks (D-NY)
Barbara Lee (D-CA)
Plus
Jan Schakowsky (D-IL)
Also, Congressman Barbara Lee of California issued the following statement on November 15th:
"The right to vote and the right to have our votes counted are both fundamental to our democratic system of government," said Lee.
"As elected representatives of the people, we hold a sacred responsibility to every voter across this nation to ensure that their vote is counted and recorded properly. We cannot, and we should not accept any flaws in our election process."
Julie Nickson, press secretary for Barbara Lee, added, "She signed it because she was aware of the situation. We got some phone calls from constituents."
The letter, or set of letters, is addressed to The Honorable David M. Walker, Comptroller General of the United States, General Accountability Office.
The first letter begins, "We write with an urgent request that the GAO immediately undertake an investigation of the efficacy of voting machines and new technologies used in the 2004 election, how election officials responded to the difficulties they encountered, and what we can do in the future to improve our election systems and administration."
Particular concerns brought up are:
-The almost 4,000 votes awarded to Bush in Columbus, Ohio, reported by the AP, which was only noticeable because more votes were recorded in the precinct than there were registered voters.
-Votes lost on a local initiative in Florida because the computer could only store so many votes.
-Apx. 4,500 votes lost in one North Carolina county.
-A glitch in San Francisco computers which caused many votes to be uncounted.
-Florida's anomalous results where only districts with touch screen voting had disproportionate votes for Bush than expected. This analysis has since
been duplicated by a UC Berkeley professor and others.
-AP reports in Florida and Ohio of voters who stated when using touchscreens, when they selected "John Kerry," that instead "George Bush" would appear on the screen.
-Long lines in urban Ohio areas, to the point where voters left in frustration after 8 or so hours. But that's not all. The second letter, dated, November

"-Long lines in urban Ohio areas, to the point where voters left in frustration after 8 or so hours. But that's not all. The second letter, dated, November 8th, reported additional incidents.
-3,000 phantom votes were added by a Nebraska "vote tabulator" which doubled the votes.
-22,000 North Carolina votes which later had to be added because the computer initially discarded them due to system overload.
-21 voting machines in Broward County, Florida, malfunctioned, eliminating prior votes that had been cast on them in this most-Democratic county in the state.
-Warren County, Ohio's, bogus refusal allow independent monitoring of vote counting based on a terrorist incident which turned out later to not exist.
-Malfunctioning vote cassettes in Palm Beach, FL.
-Boxes of absentee votes discovered after the election in a Broward County election office....."

Where is John Kerry is one of those kinds of questions. I also don't see my own, black, Congresswoman there on the list; and as usual I'm wondering when the Senator who just took my vote and whom I support (Boxer) isn't rushing in to correct her mistake of 2000.
We should work on this, and I'll tell you why:
NOT because we will necessarily get any kind of different result.
Because we need URGENTLY to direct Americans to the fact that their votes are NO LONGER BEING COUNTED, and the people who are thus forcing the gates of democracy are extremists who are following a plan of DISMANTLING AMERICA, to remake it in the corporate (logo'd) image.

Here's the problem, to me, folks: CREDIBILITY
Out of an alleged 120 million votes cast, about 30 million were cast on electronic voting machines. That's 25%. But the alleged margin of victory is fewer than 3 million votes, or about 10 percent of those cast electronically (like my own). You'd only have to flip HALF of those to change the outcome of the election to the current 'result.' That's only about 1.5 million. that's not that many, folks...less than one percent of all votes cast...who'd notice??? really???
What we have here, in the words of J. Habermas, is a crisis of legitimacy...

Exactly, K.
It is up to the winning party to prove that the elections were fair.
Diebold and the other PARTISAN R vote collection companies, have their SECRET software tested and certifed by other PARTISAN R companies.
An election system where ONE PARTY counts the votes is not a legal system. Especially when Diebold ILLEGALLY changes, installs, uninstalls, and otherwise freeps the software whenever they feel like, even having their salesmen FLIP the votes inside the counting room, WITH NO DOCUMENTATION OF THEIR ACTIONS (as they were CAUGHT doing in CA 2003).
On top of that, the purchase of huge numbers of electronic voting machines was GIGANTIC WINDFALL to our various SecStates (and Cty Election Officials), and a number of 'Katherines' have popped up, including in CA (Katherine Shelley), OH (Katherine Blackwell), FL (Katherine Hood), and others.
They liked the swimming pool, the trip to Tahiti, and the extra three zeroes in their bank accounts, and they have SOLD US DOWN THE RIVER.
So let us not hear about credibility from cowards.
My momma didn't raise no boys who cavil from a fight.

Out of an alleged 120 million votes cast, about 30 million were cast on electronic voting machines.
Does that count the total that were electronically centrally tabulated? Because there seems to be a big problem with central tabulation even of votes not cast on "electronic voting machines" in the usual sense.

Out of an alleged 120 million votes cast, about 30 million were cast on electronic voting machines.

Of course, yes, central tabulation is what goes on, using Diebold software even in areas and states that don't use electronic voting machines.
You will notice, once you get done laughing at the desperation of the trolls, that the corporate media has avoided discussing central tabulation on secret software, while focussing all its attention on the voting machines themselves.
You will also notice that your state's Katherine also focusses all attention on the voting machines, and manages to never mention the central tabulation software, which we KNOW is vulnerable to ANY computer on the network, or to ANY computer that can access a network modem.
Flipping the vote is SUCH treason that most people have a hard time believing it has come to pass, AGAIN. But when you compare your own very real eyes with the lies the media tells, you will understand.
Proving that there were fair elections is the #1 job of the WINNERS. And they have failed for four elections in a row to show us their 'morality and conscience.' Funny how their foreign and domestic policies are also, utterly, conscience free.

In Dallas County, early voting was all on touch screens. There have been serious questions raised about that vote, and it is being investigated, quietly, by Bruce Sherbet, who is in charge of elections here.
So, what, is everyone who wants to ensure free and fair elections in this country a loon?
Man, you Squeaky Johnson clones would be squealing like pigs if your man had lost and you thought the election wasn't fair.

"That is why we have been talking about secession. We don't like you like you don't like us!"
Naturally you are confused by the flipping of the vote, abetted by a VERY FEW ardent, HOPELESSLY STUPID, trolls.
KERRY WON BY LANDSLIDE, as all the exit polls showed. NO good excuse has been given for voiding them, and scientists have give the odds on their being that far wrong at 250 M to 1.
We don't need to secede, and by the way, that is an AWFUL bit of snark. The people who think, as a troll said a few days ago, that Lincoln was a war criminal, are a MINORITY of rightwing voices, who have stolen power through EVERY LIE THEY COULD COME UP WITH.
We don't need secession; we just need OUR country back.

Interesting that Powell and MacLellan were so quick to denounce this election. Another distraction ? or feels too close to home ?

We don't speak for him but we're betting "no." He's not committing to anything until there's enough changes that commitment doesn't matter. There have been cases of thousands of votes, and they need to be investigated and answered, and they will not not be, but what Kerry "needs" is not mere thousands.

The cases of 'thousands' of (not votes) BALLOTS are one thing, ky.
The millions of voters who were disenfranchized by voter suppression efforts is quite another. IF there are canvasses of Ohio precincts, Bush's 100,000 ballot lead will evaporate in a few properly-counted towns.
And then there is Diebold, which is responsible for most of the vote fraud, with its secret illegal software that FLIPS votes for Kerry into votes for Bush, in order to produce a PRESET ELECTION TOTAL.
Don't buy the lies; there are so many they ought to be paying you to be their fool.

warning: it's more like a 'Final Solution', but funny in spots, e.g.:
"As for the South -- these are the only Anglo-Saxons ever to get their asses kicked in warfare, surrender and be colonized...in other words, they are the special olympiads of the Anglo-Saxon race -- and they lost even that."

While I applaud the idea of writing to retailers to explain why we're not spending this season, why not write to a central retailers association and/or retailers lobbying group?
This would focus the protest like a laser light on organizations which represent ALL RETAILERS. We could explain that if we have to spend in stores, it will go to local "ma & pa" or other community based retailers, but will stick it to the big guys.
Does anyone have information on who the retailers professional organization is? And who the lobbying outfit is? Is it one and the same?
Think about it. Sending letters to different department stores will dilute our message. Sending letters to their representative organization will better get them to sit up and pay attention!

If Yanukovich is sincere, we ought to consider running him for President in the US.
I sure could use the change. I'm tired of Bush's second term already.
