However, Jon Stewart's never made fun of anyone for changing their name while pretending Stewart is the last name he was born with.

Oh, and it's pretty common for female entertainers (I mean actors and singers, not Bangkok-style) to keep their own names professionally but change their names legally. If I remember correctly, Jennifer Aniston changed her name legally when she got married (her driver's license says "Jennifer Pitt") but kept her own name professionally.

I have no idea why you would take your husband's name professionally and not legally. Nope. No idea. I'm sure it had nothing to do with downplaying your ethnic background. Noooo. I'm sure that's ridiculous.

Nope. He was born John Kerry, and his father was also born with the last name Kerry.

His grandfather changed it from something Eastern European and Jewish when he came to America, which John Kerry only found out a few years ago. However, it seems a little unfair to say, "How dare you let your grandfather change the family's name before your own father is born?!?" What, like John Kerry has a time machine or something?

It would be fun to have someone ask her about the hyprocrisy of snarking about someone else's name choice while she (apparently) isn't using her own legal name, just to see her eyes cross and roll in indignation. I'm convinced that when she's alone the head spins completely around, but she's yet to demonstrate that on television.

But I have to say that I find it depressing that women still get judged for the names they choose to go by, as Mr. and Mrs. Atrios just found out. Why does it matter what Teresa calls herself? Or if Hillary sticks a "Rodham" in her name or not?

It's not just wingers, either. There was an interview, I believe in Time Magazine, with Caroline Kennedy about one of her books, and the interviewer asked her why she used the name "Kennedy" on the book and not her married name "Kennedy Schlossberg." Implying of course that she was trying to cash in on her Kennedy name. And Caroline replied, far more politely than I would have, that she hadn't changed her name when she married but people call you what they want to call you.

Speaking of all of this name nonsense - when did Mary Todd Lincoln become Mary Lincoln?

I thought she was always (even back 150 years ago when she was alive) Mary Todd Lincoln (because her family was far more connected than ol' Honest Abe). But over the past few years, I've noticed a trend to call her Mary Lincoln.

Are the fundies getting mad at women keeping their maiden names in their names? Are they again trying to take us back to a historical moment that never even existed in history again?

Ya know - I blame the movie Camelot for all of this ... just as the Civil War was the fault of Ivanhoe (originally conceived as the tale of a Jewish accountant named Ivan Horowitz ) ...

BTW - some of the early comedians were very open about having changed their names, e.g., Jack Benny who would even mention on his radio show that his real name was Benny Kubelsky (or something like that ... too lazy to google right now). But from what I remember, George Burns (who got his name off of a coal truck or something like that, IIRC) was much more reticent about revealing his real name of Nathan Birnbaum.

I make a decent living writing copy about furniture and how to sell it. It's not the only thing I do, though. I also plan trade shows, and cocktail and theme parties, and work with fabric vendors, photographers, etc. But it's all part of the package. I write all of the external communication for the company ~ bulletins and news flashes to distributors, brochure copy, the company news letter, news releases, letters for people in management positions who don't have a strong command of the language, etc.

I enjoy the party planning most of all. And the writing.

Up to this point, things have been relatively smooth, since my STBESIL had been wanting out of the marriage for a while herself and already has a new boyfriend. And everyone has been playing nice for the sake of the kids.

That's right, I didn't mention the four-year-old niece and two-year-old nephew in the middle of all of this.

You are to remain ignorant and shielded, and, if you're like most Americans, you have been very carefully conditioned to think Bush's nasty Iraq war is merely this ugly little firecracker-like thing happening way, way over there, carefully orchestrated and somewhat messy and maybe a little bloody but mostly still patriotic and good and necessary and sponsored by none other than God his own angry Republican self.

And hence you and I both have no real idea what the hell goes on in Iraq, no real images to gnaw on and be deeply horrified and saddened by, except for maybe a tiny handful of carefully sanitized snapshots of bombed-out Iraqi cities and maybe some grainy video of U.S. soldiers enjoying a dusty game of pickup football and a turkey dinner at the posh military digs way, way outside of Baghdad.

Or maybe you think war is manly and heroic and cool, as exemplified by that now-famous shot of that macho "Dogface" Marlboro-smokin' Marine whose dirt-encrusted mug was eagerly picked up by newspapers and media Web sites across the nation (including this one), and he became an instant icon for the war and the military was positively giddy about using him an ideal recruitment tool, a model of how to make soldiers look all studly and rugged and badass as opposed to the often poorly educated, disposable hunks of politically abused postpubescent meat BushCo considers them to be.

So then. Here is your uncensored truth: fallujahinpictures.com. Real pictures from Fallujah. Real pictures of war. Brutal and explicit and shocking and just one site of many. Those horrific photos are indeed available (just Google "Iraq war pictures"). But, really, who wants to see that? Not Dubya, that's who. Besides, that's what slasher movies are for. And maybe you already know that our government instituted an unqualified ban on pictures of all those flag-draped U.S. coffins that are pouring into American Air Force bases by the hundreds. Maybe you remember that cargo worker who lost her job last spring for leaking such photos to The Seattle Times.

Maybe you know how back in June the Republican-led Congress upheld the ban on coffin photos, all under the guise of "respecting soldiers' families," which of course translates directly into "If the pubic saw all those kids coming home dead, they might not wave that flag so wildly."

As the saying goes, Bush may be dumb, but he ain't always stupid. Even he doubtlessly remembers the effect of watching TV in the '60s and seeing all those American kids coming home from Vietnam in body bags. Not exactly good for morale back home. Not exactly good for the country's view of itself. And true poison to the pseudo-noble idea of just what the hell it is we think we're doing by launching such brutal and unwinnable wars in the first place...

Funny thing is, many right-wing neocons consider the act of displaying such pictures unpatriotic, even traitorous. As if revealing the true horrors of war somehow disrespects our long-suffering soldiers, somehow harms them by depicting the full violence of what they must endure for Bush's snide and viciously isolationist policies. You think soldiers don't want the folks back home to know what they have to deal with? You think they want you numb to the truth of war and pain and death? Guess again.

Maybe this should be the rule: If you can't handle seeing what really goes on in a war, maybe you don't deserve to support it. If you can't stomach the truths of what our soldiers are doing and how brutally and bloodily they're dying and in just what manner they have to kill those innocent Iraqi civilians in the name of BushCo's desperate lurch toward greed and power and Iraqi oil fields and empire, maybe you don't have the right to stick that little flag on your oil-sucking SUV. Clear enough?

Seriously, of course I would seek to engage the issue on its substance ... but there is also the hypocrisy angle. Indeed, given that so many of us Jews have at least vaguely Germanic names, it begs the question - would the Jew be shooting himself in the foot saying that such an internment would have been ok. E.g. if someone named Hodel Schwartznagel were saying it would have been fine to put Germans in internment camps in WWII ... not only would it be mean-spirited to the point of clinically meshugge for them to support such a "do badly to others 'cause they did it to us" policy, but it would also beg the question - wouldn't someone with a Yiddish name like Hodel Schwartznagel be worried about being interned in such a situation herself? Does someone who is silly enough not to understand that once the hysteria gets rolling, if you are seen as "one of them" you are one of them, deserve anything less than to be made fun of?

OTOH, the reason why people do pay attention to her is that she is Asian not because of her particular Filipino ancestry - so hence her race does become an issue ... because she let's it become an issue.

In general, I would agree with you --- I believe in "know your enemy" and I think we Dems. have been very bad at (1) viewing politics as a war game in the same way Republicans do (we take it too seriously, actually - if we would play the game, we would win more) and (2) understanding what drives people to drink the kool-aid so that we can prevent future people from drinking it (note - I am not saying we should moderate our positions ... the Republicans didn't get where they are today by becoming mainstream but by changing the meanstream to reflect Republican talking points ... note, I am also not saying we should condone kool-aid drinking ... there is a big difference between understanding something and condoning it).

Once again, you're trying to draw a comparison between two disparate things, because in your formulation, I'm still not defending anything vile.

MMM's book has nothing to do with this discussion. Personally I don't care why she feels the way she does about the Japanese. I don't want to understand her psyche. And wondering about what her Filipino parents may or may not have told her growing up is just silly. And it doesn't matter.

What matters is that she's nuts. And for some reason she is given enough credibility in some circles to spout her opinions -- to use a generous word -- in public forums.

Again, my view of MMM is based on the full realization that the United States has done evil things. Very evil things. Which is why it's hard for me to sympathize with someone who would romanticize and excuse one of our lowest points as a country and as a people.

There were all kinds of excuses for why we "had to" intern innocent American citizens. But as I keep trying to make you understand, "excuse" and "reason" are NOT SYNONYMS.

The reason for the internment was fear of the "yellow peril," that Japanese-Americans were more loyal to their ancestry than to their birthplace. Everything else is just putting lipstick on the pig.

I suggested that Michelle's motives may have been to appease her Filipino family/friends by supporting internment of Japanese Americans.

She may see it as a proper punishment even if that wasn't the intention. She'd be wrong, but at least you'd understand her as a human being rather than misunderstand her and thereby not be able to address her actual motives.

I think that's important.

I'm sure the paycheck didn't hurt, but it may not have been all there is to her motives.

Not only do I disagree with that serious oversimplification, but most scholars of the Nazis would disagree with you as well.

I can recommend some books for you to read if you'd like. You can start with the companion book to the BBC series, "The Nazis: A Lesson from History." In fact, if you keep an eye on the History Channel, they re-run it a couple times a year. Depressing, but very eye-opening about the myths we hold about the Nazis.

Hitler admired what we did to the Native Americans, but that wasn't what he took as his model. He took our eugenics laws and Jim Crow laws and followed them to their logical extreme -- elimination of the "undesirables" that the U.S. laws were meant to merely control.

This is why I'm so vehemently against MMM and her vile book. We've seen before what can happen when people have "scientific" or "logical" excuses that they follow all the way into the pits of Hell.

I think the irony is that she still has the name of her dead Republican husband, and not that of her living Democratic presidential nominee. Malkin would exhibit hypocricy if she used the name of a dead or divorced former husban, particularly one whose politics are not congruent with hers. This does not appear to be the case. It seems that if one doesn't agree with another's politics, then the most trivial things are subject to criticism, which often reveals more about the one doing the criticism.

Funny, a couple of nights ago I was thinking how I'm starting to prefer the comments here (except for Haloscan itself, feh), and the relative lack of trolls derailing threads, and, well, just look what happens.

Personally, I think BH lost all credibility when he started insisting that:

A) Atrios was making fun of The Satanic Miz M's name - that *might* be a possible interpretation if you don't know what a link is, but otherwise... Sure, *you* (I'd say "we," but I missed the fun) all did, but hopefully BH can *at least* comprehend the difference between "Atrios" and "people who visit Atrios's site."

And B), That we're all racists because we hate Michelle Whatsername. I saw the exact same thing on a Political Animal thread where we were all accused of racism for speculating that Condi could never become preznit 'cause she couldn't carry the South. That may or may not be a true or fair statement, but it's Southist, not racist. I'm also reminded of the Mary Cheney kerfuffle, and the various psycho right-wing judges nominated for the sole purpose of letting the Republicans wail & moan about how the Dems are anti-Latino, anti-Catholic bigots. Clearly, *any* chance the right wing has to accuse the left of racism is to be jumped on with both feet. You'd think it would blow up in their faces, but it never does.
