That is really hilarious, and so very much like Ms. Malkin-Maglalang.
I guess she is just one big ball of self-hatred.
I still think she's pretty though, as would all the others in the internment camp, I'm sure.

Well, Tony Bennett is really Benedetto (that's how he signs his paintings, btw), most of the classic Jewish comedians changed their names -- entertainers don't want to sound too foreign, you know. I mean, she is basically in show business.

On our side, Jon Stewart's original last name is Liebowitz (Stewart is his middle name) though he has legally changed it.
However, Jon Stewart's never made fun of anyone for changing their name while pretending Stewart is the last name he was born with.
Why? Because he's not a moron. Unlike Malkin/Maglalang.
Maybe we should all start using her legal last name. What's she going to do -- sue us for libel?

She is total raving hypocrite, who will do or say anything for fame and few bucks. Child of Filipino immigrants? Call for restrictions on immigration so you can keep the club exclusive. Defend Japanese internment because an Asian woman's defense of it will sell books. She's worse than Coulter, because Coulter has the excuse of insanity. Maglalong is solely in it for the money, IMHO.

Oh, and it's pretty common for female entertainers (I mean actors and singers, not Bangkok-style) to keep their own names professionally but change their names legally. If I remember correctly, Jennifer Aniston changed her name legally when she got married (her driver's license says "Jennifer Pitt") but kept her own name professionally.
I have no idea why you would take your husband's name professionally and not legally. Nope. No idea. I'm sure it had nothing to do with downplaying your ethnic background. Noooo. I'm sure that's ridiculous.

I think she has more than two aliases: (and her third is appropriate for catblogging)
First witch: When shall we three meet again,
Second witch: In thunder, lightning, or in rain?
When the hurly-burly's done,
When the battle's lost and won.
Third witch: That will be ere the set of sun.
First witch: Where the place?
Second witch: Upon the heath.
Third witch: There to meet with Macbeth.
First witch: I come, Greymalkin!
Second witch: Paddock calls.
Third witch: Anon!
All: Fair is foul, and foul is fair:
Hover through the fog and filthy air.

Someone told me John Kerry's original name was Kaplan. Is that true?
Nope. He was born John Kerry, and his father was also born with the last name Kerry.
His grandfather changed it from something Eastern European and Jewish when he came to America, which John Kerry only found out a few years ago. However, it seems a little unfair to say, "How dare you let your grandfather change the family's name before your own father is born?!?" What, like John Kerry has a time machine or something?
(It would be cool to have a time machine.)

It would be fun to have someone ask her about the hyprocrisy of snarking about someone else's name choice while she (apparently) isn't using her own legal name, just to see her eyes cross and roll in indignation. I'm convinced that when she's alone the head spins completely around, but she's yet to demonstrate that on television.
But I have to say that I find it depressing that women still get judged for the names they choose to go by, as Mr. and Mrs. Atrios just found out. Why does it matter what Teresa calls herself? Or if Hillary sticks a "Rodham" in her name or not?
It's not just wingers, either. There was an interview, I believe in Time Magazine, with Caroline Kennedy about one of her books, and the interviewer asked her why she used the name "Kennedy" on the book and not her married name "Kennedy Schlossberg." Implying of course that she was trying to cash in on her Kennedy name. And Caroline replied, far more politely than I would have, that she hadn't changed her name when she married but people call you what they want to call you.

So, she was born Michelle Maglalang, and got married to Jesse Malkin.
Could they be, rather like Mr and Mrs Atrios, a dual-surnamed couple, but one where La Michelle uses her husband's surname without having legally changed hers? It'd be an inversion of the common practice -- change your name on your legal docs, but retain your 'maiden' name for professional purposes. But then again, 'Maglalang' and 'professional wingnut' go together like 'Hitler' and 'professional bar mitzvah photographer'.

I have no idea why you would take your husband's name professionally and not legally. Nope. No idea. I'm sure it had nothing to do with downplaying your ethnic background.
It could be that, being a "professional" right-wing nutball, you wanted to appear to be "traditional" by taking your husband's name, but that even that was show.

Normally, when a team loses, they hit the practice feild to improve.
The Democrat's, pissed at not having a majority since 1976, are clearly not much of a team though, staying in teh field, and trying thier hardest to piss on the victors.
To what end I wonder?
An expirement is called for.
Let's fill Giants stadium with two year olds, and then take thier balls and bats away.
Let us observe their behavior, and see what comes of it. This will give ya'all a snapshot of what's up here.
If ya really care about something, posting comments here is the opposite of progressive. At least with masturbating, you get some hair gel and other goo!

pseudonymous in nc-if her husband's name is Malkin, then she is doing exactly what THK does, which makes her even a bigger hypocrite (if that is possible).
It's even better: a 1993 discussion, entitled '', has her as 'Michelle Maglalang Malkin'. This was just after her marriage, I believe.
Y'know, she could change her name to Hugh Janus, if she really wanted to, and I wouldn't mind. But there's something just a little weird about taking your husband's name for 'stage purposes only'.

Writing about chairs and how to sell them
What?
You can make a living at that?
I never could make a living building chairs, maybe you're the person to tell me what the hell I've been doing wrong.

Speaking of all of this name nonsense - when did Mary Todd Lincoln become Mary Lincoln?
I thought she was always (even back 150 years ago when she was alive) Mary Todd Lincoln (because her family was far more connected than ol' Honest Abe). But over the past few years, I've noticed a trend to call her Mary Lincoln.
Are the fundies getting mad at women keeping their maiden names in their names? Are they again trying to take us back to a historical moment that never even existed in history again?
Ya know - I blame the movie Camelot for all of this ... just as the Civil War was the fault of Ivanhoe (originally conceived as the tale of a Jewish accountant named Ivan Horowitz ) ...
BTW - some of the early comedians were very open about having changed their names, e.g., Jack Benny who would even mention on his radio show that his real name was Benny Kubelsky (or something like that ... too lazy to google right now). But from what I remember, George Burns (who got his name off of a coal truck or something like that, IIRC) was much more reticent about revealing his real name of Nathan Birnbaum.

Speaking of bad holidays, I knew it was going to be an uncomfortable Thanksgiving with a guest list of my parents, my brother, my soon-to-be-ex-sister-in-law*, my brother's girlfriend, and my STBESIL's parents and brother.
Little did I know that my brother's girlfriend would choose to up the ante by staying out all Wednesday night fucking another guy while my brother was at their apartment getting ready to fill out a missing persons report. She then had the balls to show up late to Thanksgiving dinner WITH MY PARENTS.
Yeah. Christmas is gonna be ... interesting.

Speaking of resignations:
John Danforth from his post as UN Ambassador. After only five months in the job.
Or is this old news already?

Real reason (surmised): fed up with Bushco.

How do you abbreviate you all? Hint: It ain't ya'all.
Also, in 1976, Democrats held the White House, Senate, and House. No, I did not fact check that statement just as the dumb ass did not fact check its statement. However, the GOP did not take the House until 1994 and Carter was President until 1981 so I am confident that Democrats have not been out of the majority since 1976.

Central Scrutinizer,
Although I really do have to crack down here ~ I'm hoping to finish up the copy within an hour or so ~ yes,
I make a decent living writing copy about furniture and how to sell it. It's not the only thing I do, though. I also plan trade shows, and cocktail and theme parties, and work with fabric vendors, photographers, etc. But it's all part of the package. If you would like to e-mail me, I can send you a copy of my resume so that you can see what my job description details. I write all of the external communication for the company ~ bulletins and news flashes to distributors, brochure copy, the company news letter, news releases, letters for people in management positions who don't have a strong command of the language, etc.
I enjoy the party planning most of all. And the writing.

See, that's our problem, TJ. Before this, we were just run-of-the-mill dysfunctional. No one's quite sure how to handle this level of drama.
Up to this point, things have been relatively smooth, since my STBESIL had been wanting out of the marriage for a while herself and already has a new boyfriend. And everyone has been playing nice for the sake of the kids.
That's right, I didn't mention the four-year-old niece and two-year-old nephew in the middle of all of this.
Thank god I'm still in therapy. Wish my brother would get some.

"There is only one way to settle this - Coulter and Malkin in a PPV KY wrestling match for wingnut champion. Loser has to go live on a Fiji island for a year and not be heard from."
Pray for a draw and then ship 'em both off.
Someone up thread mentioned Jennifer Anniston - that's not her born name either. It's Annistopolous. She's Telly Savalas' niece. I'm not that big a fan, but being Kojak's niece has got to count for something in this world.

Tommy is my old Governor. Mr. power.
I remember when he was to fill the Health/Human services position. He tried to tell the administration that he wanted a better position; he didn't care for that particular one. Jeez.
Tommy is only good at acquiring power. Health services are much to boring to him.
His brother is a bar owner here in WI. He ran for governor on the Libertarian ticket. Classic up-nort Wisconsinite.

I was thinking the other day that Tommy Thompson and Tom Ridge are the same person.
Now, I'm convinced. They both completely sucked at their job, nobody would recognize them on the street, nobody can remember anything they did of any consequence, and they both resigned this week?
Like someone else, maybe Jon Stewart, said: If these guys hadn't announced their resignations, nobody would have even noticed they were gone.

Speaking of the GOPhascist junta, from the hearing for Guantanamo "detainees":
"Noting the Supreme Court said detention was to keep combatants from returning to the battlefield, Green asked, “What and where is the battlefield the U.S. military is trying to detain the prisoners from returning to? Africa? London?”
Boyle: “The conflict with al-Qaida has a global reach.”
Green asked if detainees are told how long they might be imprisoned. “When will this end?” she asked. “Can hostilities last as long as Muslim fundamentalists vow attacks on the United States?”
Boyle replied that was “a question for the president,” not judges.
Shouldn't that be THE PRESIDENT?

I wonder if the LoC has rules about where pseudonyms can and can't appear in a book. Is it the case that those who use pen-names on a front cover and remaining interior of a book must divulge what's on their birth certificate in the copyright page? Not much to do with Malkin: just wondering. Do the Editoress or Librarian know anything about this?

Tommy Thompson wants to spend more time with his family??? Puuuuhleeez. In Madison, it is well known that he cheated on his wife while she was in the hospital for breast cancer! His bimbo du jour had to be whisked away from the gov mansion by the state troopers when Sue T. came home early from hospital -- and you thought Clinton was the only dog out there! ha!
Also, why can't Coulter and Maglalangadingdong be taken down?? Isn't there some way to destroy them? Spread a rumor that they are secretly men in drag or something?

I bet it's the last year for W (stands for "War Crimes") Bush. - MeToo
In related news - Kerry's campaign has joined the lawsuit to get the votes properly recounted in Del. Co. OH.
When does the electoral college meet?
I hope the Dems. in the Senate have enough balls this time around to second any challenge that comes from the House.
Under the "leadership" of Daschle, the Dems. did nothing in 2001, and look at where it got us (and for that matter, Daschle himself).
The Rethugs didn't get all three branches of gov. by being pansies.
We shouldn't trust anyone advising us to be pansies!

OT, but column of the day (online edition):
Very, Very Dirty Pictures:
You want explicit? You want raw and uncensored and free of media bias? Here you go
By Mark Morford, SF Gate Columnist
This is what you won't see in the paper.
This is what you won't see on CNN or on MSNBC or CBS News or on any major media Web site anywhere and especially no goddamn way ever in hell will you see it within a thousand miles of Fox News.
You aren't supposed to see. You aren't supposed to know. You are to remain ignorant and shielded, and, if you're like most Americans, you have been very carefully conditioned to think Bush's nasty Iraq war is merely this ugly little firecracker-like thing happening way, way over there, carefully orchestrated and somewhat messy and maybe a little bloody but mostly still patriotic and good and necessary and sponsored by none other than God his own angry Republican self.
And hence you and I both have no real idea what the hell goes on in Iraq, no real images to gnaw on and be deeply horrified and saddened by, except for maybe a tiny handful of carefully sanitized snapshots of bombed-out Iraqi cities and maybe some grainy video of U.S. soldiers enjoying a dusty game of pickup football and a turkey dinner at the posh military digs way, way outside of Baghdad.
Or maybe you think war is manly and heroic and cool, as exemplified by that now-famous shot of that macho "Dogface" Marlboro-smokin' Marine whose dirt-encrusted mug was eagerly picked up by newspapers and media Web sites across the nation (including this one), and he became an instant icon for the war and the military was positively giddy about using him an ideal recruitment tool, a model of how to make soldiers look all studly and rugged and badass as opposed to the often poorly educated, disposable hunks of politically abused postpubescent meat BushCo considers them to be.
So then. Here is your uncensored truth: fallujahinpictures.com. Real pictures from Fallujah. Real pictures of war. Brutal and explicit and shocking and just one site of many. Be warned: this is very graphic content. Horrific and deeply disturbing. No censorship. No suppression. No Photoshop. No bogus shots of happy Iraqi children running in the streets begging for candy from American soldiers. No night shots of Marines in bitchin' night-vision goggles bustin' down the door of some palace and then cheering.
Because if you think that's what it's all been about, if you really think war is just this tragic but necessary evil that contains some unfortunate violence and regrettable death but is nonetheless still full of righteous democratic American truth, you have been wildly misled and deeply deceived and might want to consider a nice intellectual emetic. You and Dubya both.

...Mind you, fallujahinpictures.com is not all gross-out shots of imploded skulls or severed limbs or brutally decapitated children or mutilated women or splattered brains or rivers of blood and intestine and excrement lining the Iraqi streets. Those horrific photos are indeed available (just Google "Iraq war pictures"). But, really, who wants to see that? Not Dubya, that's who. Besides, that's what slasher movies are for. Republicans and war hawks don't actually want to see that stuff in, you know, real life.
And maybe you already know that our government instituted an unqualified ban on pictures of all those flag-draped U.S. coffins that are pouring into American Air Force bases by the hundreds. Maybe you remember that cargo worker who lost her job last spring for leaking such photos to The Seattle Times.
Maybe you know how back in June the Republican-led Congress upheld the ban on coffin photos, all under the guise of "respecting soldiers' families," which of course translates directly into "If the pubic saw all those kids coming home dead, they might not wave that flag so wildly."
As the saying goes, Bush may be dumb, but he ain't always stupid. Even he doubtlessly remembers the effect of watching TV in the '60s and seeing all those American kids coming home from Vietnam in body bags. Not exactly good for morale back home. Not exactly good for the country's view of itself. And true poison to the pseudo-noble idea of just what the hell it is we think we're doing by launching such brutal and unwinnable wars in the first place...
Funny thing is, many right-wing neocons consider the act of displaying such pictures unpatriotic, even traitorous. As if revealing the true horrors of war somehow disrespects our long-suffering soldiers, somehow harms them by depicting the full violence of what they must endure for Bush's snide and viciously isolationist policies. You think soldiers don't want the folks back home to know what they have to deal with? You think they want you numb to the truth of war and pain and death? Guess again.
Maybe this should be the rule: If you can't handle seeing what really goes on in a war, maybe you don't deserve to support it. If you can't stomach the truths of what our soldiers are doing and how brutally and bloodily they're dying and in just what manner they have to kill those innocent Iraqi civilians in the name of BushCo's desperate lurch toward greed and power and Iraqi oil fields and empire, maybe you don't have the right to stick that little flag on your oil-sucking SUV. Clear enough?

So making fun of her name is better than calling her 'Asian'?
Really?
Duncan, are you EVER going to acknowledge that Michelle, a FILIPINO AMERICAN, might be willing to write in support of WW II Japanese American Internment because of what Japan did to the Philippines during WW II?
Or would you likewise MOCK THE NAME of a Jewish person who wrote a book in support of WW II German American Internment?
Would you merely object to calling such an author a "European Ann Coulter", or would you acknowledge that their experiences as a JEW might affect their view of German Americans?
Same thing with Michelle as a FILIPINO.
I'm not saying I like her or admire her writing.
But why not humanize her and get to her real root issues as a person rather than caricature her as a cartoon character with a name you find amusing?
Seriously.
It would seem to be the more honest thing to do.
A reply would be appreciated (as will not being banned again for raising the same point and asking the same question...again).

Or would you likewise MOCK THE NAME of a Jewish person who wrote a book in support of WW II German American Internment? - Ben Had
Can you give me the name of this Jewish person? If Dr. Atrios refuses to mock his/her name, I'll step up to the bat ...
And I am Jewish, too!
Personally, I have had my vaguely Jewish name mocked quite often ... and I am doing the mocking only half of the time!
Let's see ...
there is that my last name is really "Snide".
there's the song from my undergrad days (to the tune of "Spiderman"):
Snyder-man, Snyder-man
Does whatever a Snyder can
Spins math proofs
Any size
Studies the biology
of worms and flies
Look out for Snyder-man
&c. &c.

I'd like to think we'd make fun of Madame Maglalang whether she was from the Phillipines or Philadelphia, Fallujah or Far Rockaway. her race doesn't matter. Her religion doesn't matter. Her hypocrisy and self-hatred matters a great deal, especially when she's considered a Legitimate Voice of Punditry. I don't care what you think her motives might have been. Madame Maglalang is a raving lunatic no matter where she's from, and the only thing separating her and TrAnn Coulter is overt insanity.
Well, that and an Adam's Apple, but that's for another day...

Why don't you address my point?
Would it be exceptional for a Jewish person to write in support of German American Internment?
If they did so, would you engage their argument -- taking into consideration their perspective as someone who lost family members to the Nazis -- or would you just mock their name?
If you only did the latter...
well, you'd be acting like a Nazi, wouldn't you?

Ben Had ...
Is this a real question or a hypothetical one? As my grandfather says about hypothetical questions "what if a donkey had a square asshole, would it shit bricks?"
Seriously, of course I would seek to engage the issue on its substance ... but there is also the hypocrisy angle. Indeed, given that so many of us Jews have at least vaguely Germanic names, it begs the question - would the Jew be shooting himself in the foot saying that such an internment would have been ok. E.g. if someone named Hodel Schwartznagel were saying it would have been fine to put Germans in internment camps in WWII ... not only would it be mean-spirited to the point of clinically meshugge for them to support such a "do badly to others 'cause they did it to us" policy, but it would also beg the question - wouldn't someone with a Yiddish name like Hodel Schwartznagel be worried about being interned in such a situation herself? Does someone who is silly enough not to understand that once the hysteria gets rolling, if you are seen as "one of them" you are one of them, deserve anything less than to be made fun of?
The fact is that if Ms. Malkin were white, she probably would not be so successful ... she swims far in our public discourse precisely because she puts an Asian face an anti-Asian racism. As such, regarding making fun of her name - fair is fair.

Okay, let's say Michelle is "hate filled".
Maybe she hates the Japanese because...
of what they did to the Philappines?
Are you even willing to acknowledge that?
Why have so few done so (besides me)?
I think it gets to the heart of the problem.
Oh, and let's say she resents a white billionaire's ability to play name games because...

Good question, especially since a) you didn't; and b) you're making stuff up wholesale, and anyone who can read knows how lame your argument is.
Ah me, why do I expect anything better from trolls?

would the Jew be shooting himself in the foot saying that such an internment would have been ok.
Which is what Michelle did to a degree, right?
Largely because people don't know the difference between Filipino and Japanese and refer to both as merely "Asian", like you do in your post.
Critiquing Mr. Hodel Schwartznagel's book while taking into full account his perspective AS A JEW would be appropriate.
Mocking Hodel Schwartznagel as the "European Andrew Sullivan" or referring to him as a "self-hating European" . . .
that seems okay with you?

Critiquing Mr. Hodel Schwartznagel's book while taking into full account his perspective AS A JEW would be appropriate.
This would be a workable analogy if German-Americans had been interned en masse during World War II.
But they weren't. You kinda forgot that part.
American citizens of Japanese descent were interned on the basis of their race during WWII.
American citizens of Italian and German descent were not.
Your hypothesis depends on judging a Jew's perspective of something that didn't happen.
Michelle (Maglalang) Malkin's book is based on defending something that happened.
Filipinos have every reason to hate the Japanese because of what happened during World War II. But do they have a reason to hate people of Japanese descent who were living in the United States? Isn't that the very definition of racism, to hate someone based on their race and not their actions?
Mocking Hodel Schwartznagel as the "European Andrew Sullivan" or referring to him as a "self-hating European" . . .
Andrew Sullivan is European. He's from England. He's still a British citizen. Calling someone "the European Andrew Sullivan" would be like calling someone "the female Salma Hayek." It makes no sense. Like all of your other arguments.

Ben Had ...
Let's try this again ...
Certainly if MMM hated Japanese, it would be, as you explain, understandable, but she would still be a racist. Even if you could understand her racism, though, why would you pay attention to her?
OTOH, the reason why people do pay attention to her is that she is Asian not because of her particular Filipino ancestry - so hence her race does become an issue ... because she let's it become an issue.
Why? Who knows ... but considering she was ragging on THK for adopting the name 'Kerry' "for politics" (and admitting it) when she uses the name Malkin sometimes and sometimes not is rather suspicious of hypocrisy at best and some deep-seated self-hatred at worst.
Certainly, as you point out:
Largely because people don't know the difference between Filipino and Japanese and refer to both as merely "Asian"
Given this, as you even admit, for someone of Asian ancestry to be so happy with internment is a form of what the Germanic people's might call selffootshooting.
At the very least, the fact that this selffootshooting risk does not seem to enter into Ms. Malkin's mind even as she goes to some length, for whatever reason, to go by Malkin even as her legal name still seems to be something more "ethnic", strikes me as rather bizarre - bizarre enough that it can be open to some amount of ridicule. At the very least, if she cannot take this sort of thing, she shouldn't dish it out to THK.
Of course, MM could be selffootshooting because she really is self-hating ... eh?
In either case, the fact remains that MM is per force an idiot and yet people listen to her.
Again, she distinguishes herself because of her race ... that's why it's on the table.
Do you get it now?

Why is everyone picking on me ... anyway don't you know I took my husband's name of Smith ... at least when I am writing about how it was justified to inter the Germans during WWII?
Of course the copywrite page lists my name as Hodel Schwartznagel ... after all, H. Smith is just the name I use for writing books.
But forget about me --- let's just laugh at Theresa Heinz for adding the Kerry at the end "just for politics".
What's the difference? IOKIYAR.

Mnemosyne -
So, if a Jewish author wrote in defense of German American Internment AS IT HAPPENED would you refer to the author as "self-hating" or the "European Michelle Malkin"?
DAS -
Even if you could understand her racism, though, why would you pay attention to her?
Did I say, "She's great! Pay attention to her!"
No, I said that Duncan's objections a few days back to refering to her as the "Asian Ann Coulter" was shallow in that it did not account for the difference between Filipinos and Japanese.
the reason why people do pay attention to her is that she is Asian not because of her particular Filipino ancestry
Like I said, that is a perfectly shallow way of looking at it.
I'm suggesting that the significant aspect of her formative identity is being overlooked. I think that's important into determining people's motives and thereby understanding their actions, even if you disgree with their actions....ESPECIALLY if you disagree with their actions!
It's RACIST and reductionist to refer to Malkin as a merely "Asian" and not take into account that as FILIPINO AMERICAN she may view herself and her family as quite distinct and different from those of Japanese descent.
Maybe she's a reverse racist. Maybe she's just trying to get kudos from her family and other Filipinos. Maybe she wants to make lots of money and buy Andy's house.
In any case, I think it would behoove people like Duncan to pay attention to the history between Japan and the Philappines in order to better understand what Michelle's motivations might be . . .
or he and his Eschatonians can continue acting ignorant of her as a real person and just continue sodomizing a pinata of their own making.

So, if a Jewish author wrote in defense of German American Internment AS IT HAPPENED would you refer to the author as "self-hating" or the "European Michelle Malkin"?
You mean, someone who wrote a book arguing that Americans of German descent should have been interned during World War II?
I would call that person a racist, just as I call MMM a racist. Believe it or not, racism by a minority (racial or religious) towards another minority or towards someone who's in the majority is still racism, which is what your hypothetical would be an example of.
And your trying to argue that MMM is right to blame Japanese-Americans for the crimes of the Japanese Empire during WWII makes you as bad as she is.

Wait, now I'm really starting to get into Ben Had's argument here.
I'm part Irish. What the English did to the Irish was far worse and took place over a far longer timeframe than what the Japanese did to the Filipinos. Google "Irish potato famine" sometime if you don't believe me.
Does that mean I get to beat up every English person I see, because the English crapped on the Irish for 400 years? Can I write a book about how we shouldn't have gone into WWII because it was propping up the British Empire and argue that I'm justified in hating the English because of what they did to my ancestors?
If so ... where does it end?

Let us pray. Think, for a moment, and have compassion regarding the causality of the behavior of the unknown Kansas serial killer (BTK), a person so undermined by his/her growing experiences that their ownly release is to butcher strangers on a regular basis.
Parishoners, remember in your hearts to forgive the anger of the man who brutally beat and shot his girlfriend and three children after abusing and stalking them for years. He had an unhappy childhood.
Yet, let's not forget the schoolyard bully as he slams the head of the boy into the pavement, day after day. His teacher had an unhappy childhood and uses that time to relieve stress by smoking in her car.

Well, Sue, we should have compassion for people like that. Problem is, people confuse "excuse" with "compassion."
In "Manhunter" (the good version of "Red Dragon"), Will Graham has a great speech when someone wonders how he can speak so compassionately about the terrible childhood of the serial killer they're hunting down:
"As a child, my heart bleeds for him. Someone took a little boy and turned him into a monster. But as an adult... as an adult, he's irredeemable. He butchers whole families to fulfill some sick fantasy. As an adult, I think someone should blow the sick fuck out of his socks."
I'm sorry Michelle Maglalang (Malkin)'s parents raised her to be a racist. But she's a grown woman now and she should know better.

Mnemosyne is spot on. Collective guilt is wrong, especially when those responsible are no longer alive. I don't blame southerners for the Civil War. I only blame southerners who still long for a pre-civil war south.

No one is defending collective guilt...
LEAST of all me.
I'm only suggesting that understanding the roots of Michelle's thinking may require understanding the nature of her ancestry and the history of her ancestors as it relates to the actions of the Japanese Empire.
Am I saying she's "right on!" or "fair"?
No. I didn't. But it is equally unfair to refuse to consider how her family's history and her personal history may affect her writings.
Does that mean I get to beat up every English person I see, because the English crapped on the Irish for 400 years? Can I write a book about how we shouldn't have gone into WWII because it was propping up the British Empire and argue that I'm justified in hating the English because of what they did to my ancestors?
If so ... where does it end>
Mnemosyne
It means that if you, as an Irish American, wrote a book critical of the 'English' occupation of Ireland, calling you a "drunken bomb thrower" would not be accurate.
Chalking your writings up to your "self-hating Europeanism" would be ludicrous.
Or don't you agree?

In general, I would agree with you --- I believe in "know your enemy" and I think we Dems. have been very bad at (1) viewing politics as a war game in the same way Republicans do (we take it too seriously, actually - if we would play the game, we would win more) and (2) understanding what drives people to drink the kool-aid so that we can prevent future people from drinking it (note - I am not saying we should moderate our positions ... the Republicans didn't get where they are today by becoming mainstream but by changing the meanstream to reflect Republican talking points ... note, I am also not saying we should condone kool-aid drinking ... there is a big difference between understanding something and condoning it).
OTOH, when a prominant person acts as loopy and hypocritical as MMM, she deserves to be teased, at the very least.

It means that if you, as an Irish American, wrote a book critical of the 'English' occupation of Ireland, calling you a "drunken bomb thrower" would not be accurate.
Once again, you're trying to draw a comparison between two disparate things, because in your formulation, I'm still not defending anything vile.
If I wrote a book defending the IRA as a group of Irish patriots trying to overthrow the British oppressors (which is the most accurate comparison we can get to), "drunken bomb-thrower" would probably be one of the kinder things that would be said about me and my book.
Why? Because the IRA are terrorists. Defending them as "patriots" is vile. Just as vile as defending the internment of innocent American citizens on the basis of their race.
Personally, I, too, am tired of the whole "self-hating" meme. It gets used every time an American Jew tries to criticize Israel.
But I still say: Filipinos have a legitimate beef with the actions of the Japanese Empire during WWII. That doesn't mean that MMM has a legitimate beef with American citizens who had nothing in common with the Japanese army other than their racial background and their language.

Actually, the correct analogy would be to argue that at some point, when our interests seemed to be at loggerheads with England, it would have been fine to intern all English-Americans, at least on the East Coast.
And, even if we could understand why a person of Irish ancestry might be suspicious of the English, it would be fair not only to accuse said Irish-American of racism, but also, considering how hard it is to tell different kinds of European-Americans apart (is someone named Carter an English-American or an Irish-American whose name got slightly changed?), one would wonder if their selffootshooting here is a sign of anti-European self-hatred ... to put it another way, considering the oh-so-obvious effects of an English-American internment on Irish-Americans who might be mistaken for English-Americans, wouldn't you wonder why an Irish-American, even given Irish history, would be so gung-ho about internment unless they had a hankering to get interned themselves -- due to a wee bit o' self-hatred?

I dunno - speaking as an American Jew (who is just about to get his Shabbos on ), I say we should criticize the pro-Zionist, pro-Likud types who like to kiss up to Christian Zionists for being self-hating. Why else would they support a cause whose premise is that Jews should not be in the rest of the world but ingathered into Israel where we can get destroyed come Armeggedon? Why else would they act as if the fundies are the only "real Americans" and support policies that would make non-Christians second class citizens?

MMM's book has nothing to do with this discussion. Personally I don't care why she feels the way she does about the Japanese. I don't want to understand her psyche. And wondering about what her Filipino parents may or may not have told her growing up is just silly. And it doesn't matter.
What matters is that she's nuts. And for some reason she is given enough credibility in some circles to spout her opinions -- to use a generous word -- in public forums.
So all of us here -- starting with Atrios -- are amused to see her caught in a little hypocrisy. It was funny. We had a laugh. Save the indignation for another thread. And have a good weekend, all.

I said that one should try to understand her motives.
I understand her motives. I also understand the motives of John Metzger of Washington state. That doesn't mean I think Metzger shouldn't have gone to jail for beating an Ethopian man to death.
(Metzger's motive? He is a white supremicist. MMM's motive? Racial hatred of the Japanese, according to you. The only difference is that MMM doesn't want to get her hands dirty like Metzger did.)
You're making excuses for MMM based on her race -- "Oh, her family was treated badly by the Japanese, so of course she's racist against the Japanese." I think that's far more condescending than anything we've said about her here.
Why should we excuse Malkin's racism? Is it because she's (gasp!) a minority? Or can we point out the hypocrisy of her approving the oppression of one minority group while she decrys the oppression of her own minority group?
Just as one should try to understand the motives of people who support the IRA . . .
People who support the IRA naively believe that they are "freedom fighters," the same way that people believe Palestinian suicide bombers are "freedom fighters," or Israeli settlers who storm into mosques and kill the worshippers there are "freedom fighters." It's the revolutionary bullshit mystique that makes teenagers walk around in Che Guevara t-shirts without stopping to realize that the man was a mass murderer.
Sorry. Unlike you, I don't believe in giving people passes for their stupid, racist beliefs. I believe in challenging them.
Or was it just part America's willingness to engage carry on actions used in the Native American Holocaust that Hitler admired so much . . .
Actually, what Hitler really admired was our Jim Crow laws -- he based the Nuremberg laws directly on them. And our eugenic laws allowing the involuntary sterilization and incarceration of the genetically "undesirable." Hitler started small, with sterilizations and euthanizations. It took him a while to work his way up to the assembly-line murder of Buchenwald.
Again, my view of MMM is based on the full realization that the United States has done evil things. Very evil things. Which is why it's hard for me to sympathize with someone who would romanticize and excuse one of our lowest points as a country and as a people.
There were all kinds of excuses for why we "had to" intern innocent American citizens. But as I keep trying to make you understand, "excuse" and "reason" are NOT SYNONYMS.
The reason for the internment was fear of the "yellow peril," that Japanese-Americans were more loyal to their ancestry than to their birthplace. Everything else is just putting lipstick on the pig.
And you're French-kissing that pig, Ben.

I didn't suggest that. (But I won't tell you to shove it.)
I suggested that Michelle's motives may have been to appease her Filipino family/friends by supporting internment of Japanese Americans.
She may see it as a proper punishment even if that wasn't the intention. She'd be wrong, but at least you'd understand her as a human being rather than misunderstand her and thereby not be able to address her actual motives.
I think that's important.
I'm sure the paycheck didn't hurt, but it may not have been all there is to her motives.

I said it was a possiblity worth considering.

It's widely acknowledged that Hitler admired the Native American Holocaust, and merely applied the techniques of Henry Ford's industrialism to the eugenic task.
You disagree?
The reason for the internment was fear of the "yellow peril," that Japanese-Americans were more loyal to their ancestry than to their birthplace.
I agree. I think that people like Michelle, wrong or right, think there was a risk of what you suggest and that this is based -- in part -- on experience of the Japanese Empire and those Japanese who supported it, in Japan and America.

MMM's motive? Racial hatred of the Japanese, according to you.
I said it was a possiblity worth considering.
It's widely acknowledged that Hitler admired the Native American Holocaust, and merely applied the techniques of Henry Ford's industrialism to the eugenic task.

I suggested that Michelle's motives may have been to appease her Filipino family/friends by supporting internment of Japanese Americans.
John Metzger beat a man to death to "appease" his white supremicist father. Should he not have gone to jail for that?
She may see it as a proper punishment even if that wasn't the intention. She'd be wrong, but at least you'd understand her as a human being rather than misunderstand her and thereby not be able to address her actual motives.
See, that's the problem here. You see racism as a mitigating factor, but I think it makes it worse than if she'd just done it for the money.

Not only do I disagree with that serious oversimplification, but most scholars of the Nazis would disagree with you as well.
I can recommend some books for you to read if you'd like. You can start with the companion book to the BBC series, "The Nazis: A Lesson from History." In fact, if you keep an eye on the History Channel, they re-run it a couple times a year. Depressing, but very eye-opening about the myths we hold about the Nazis.
Hitler admired what we did to the Native Americans, but that wasn't what he took as his model. He took our eugenics laws and Jim Crow laws and followed them to their logical extreme -- elimination of the "undesirables" that the U.S. laws were meant to merely control.
This is why I'm so vehemently against MMM and her vile book. We've seen before what can happen when people have "scientific" or "logical" excuses that they follow all the way into the pits of Hell.

You are still speculating as to her motives; and even if true, it is a false motive. I don't care what her motives for being a hypocrite preaching in the streets may be. She criticized a woman for not taking her husband's last name while using it publicly. It turns out that she does the very same thing.

Snow,
I think the irony is that she still has the name of her dead Republican husband, and not that of her living Democratic presidential nominee. Malkin would exhibit hypocricy if she used the name of a dead or divorced former husban, particularly one whose politics are not congruent with hers. This does not appear to be the case. It seems that if one doesn't agree with another's politics, then the most trivial things are subject to criticism, which often reveals more about the one doing the criticism.

Late to the party on this one - Atrios needs to start more threads when I'm *not* at work.
Funny, a couple of nights ago I was thinking how I'm starting to prefer the comments here (except for Haloscan itself, feh), and the relative lack of trolls derailing threads, and, well, just look what happens.
Personally, I think BH lost all credibility when he started insisting that:
A) Atrios was making fun of The Satanic Miz M's name - that *might* be a possible interpretation if you don't know what a link is, but otherwise... Sure, *you* (I'd say "we," but I missed the fun) all did, but hopefully BH can *at least* comprehend the difference between "Atrios" and "people who visit Atrios's site."
And B), That we're all racists because we hate Michelle Whatsername. I saw the exact same thing on a Political Animal thread where we were all accused of racism for speculating that Condi could never become preznit 'cause she couldn't carry the South. That may or may not be a true or fair statement, but it's Southist, not racist. I'm also reminded of the Mary Cheney kerfuffle, and the various psycho right-wing judges nominated for the sole purpose of letting the Republicans wail & moan about how the Dems are anti-Latino, anti-Catholic bigots. Clearly, *any* chance the right wing has to accuse the left of racism is to be jumped on with both feet. You'd think it would blow up in their faces, but it never does.
Right, rant over. Will now proceed to talk about muppets.

Funny that you mention the History Channel as a resource, Mnemosyne!
Just last night (Fri. 1 am ET/PT) The History Channel had a show talking specifically about how much Adolph Hitler admired the Native American Holocaust as conducted by Amerika!
It was called 'Hitler's Lost Plan'.

Fit The Third
In Which I Talke About Muppetes And Various Linguistic Chimeras
*ahem*
*miscellaneous throat-clearing noises*
Does anyone remember the Muppet Show number with the female muppet singing "I Feel Pretty" as she literally puts her face on? And each feature she put on made her even more cutely grotesque and hideous, in that way muppet monsters have. Good stuff, especially when she started growling out, "It's alarming how charming I feel..."
Ever notice that "Off Topic" and "On Topic" have the same abbreviation?

Malkin needs to shut the fuck up and go away.
She's too stupid to see that she's the token Asian of the GOP. What's the difference between her and Condi Rice?
What kills me is she's so against immigration and her parents are Filipino immigrants (her husband, of course, is white; she's too good to marry an Asian).
She wants to deny other people what her parents were allowed? What bullshit!
Malkin is every bit as much a hater as that slut, Ann Coulter.

Right, Terry C!
And the fact that they are Filipino may explain why she wrote what she did against Japanese Americans.
But you're free to lump her with all 'Asians' and say that based on her LOOKS she ought to work in a massage parlor.

Duncan, are you EVER going to acknowledge that Michelle, a FILIPINO AMERICAN, might be willing to write in support of WW II Japanese American Internment because of what Japan did to the Philippines during WW II?
Why is someone from the Philippines called a Filippino?
I have no idea, but she is some phucking hypocrite.

Shall we start with Christopher Browning and his recent book, "The Origins of the Final Solution"? Browning is the author of "Ordinary Men," which is probably the best book available about the Einsatzgruppen.

Read a little more carefully, sweetheart. It's a BBC documenary miniseries that the History Channel sometimes runs.
You can go to the History Channel and look it up!
I did. It's not on there. Find me a link and I'll read it.
You're such a dork, Mnemosyne!
I've cited three books by eminent scholars and one BBC documentary series with its accompanying book. I even gave you links to look at the books on Amazon.
You've cited some History Channel show you claim to have seen at 1 a.m. that the History Channel has no record of.
Dork isn't the word I'm thinking about you right now. More like "lying asswipe" or "idiotic douchebag."
