Why does the NY Times need another conservative? They only have one liberal, Krugman. Brooks holds down the far right, so why does the NY Times need another right winger?
The sell most of the newspapers in the Northeast corridor, solidly Democratic. So why do they need another conservative????????

They should just hire Coulter or Horowitz and announce it with an article entitled "Is this okay with you, Mr. Prezident, sir?"

I hope Franken's point about the importance of this event isn't lost on anyone. They manipulated the entire evening with the media as a willing accomplice. Sen. Norm Coleman won the election because of it, and because Sen. Norm Coleman won, the Dems lost control of the Senate.
This isn't a laughing matter.
I think Okrent should hear from all of us until the Times can find a decent and intelligent conservative, of which there are plenty (they just have a harder time being hired by propagandists), instead of an attack poodle.
We should tell the Times that they owe us an intelligent Conservative, and not a hateful, selfserving mouthpiece for the Right.

Why does the NY Times need another conservative? They only have one liberal, Krugman.
And as much as I love Krugman for his insistent criticism of Bushco, it's worth noting that he isn't even really all that far to the left. Certainly not as far to the left as Safire and Brooks are to the right.

I hate to sound like a troll (I'm not), but Chris Caldwell is a really good writer and thinker. The piece in question was just vile--I can't explain it; maybe some of his father-in-law's slime rubbed off. (His father-in-law is Robert Novak.) But if you read his stuff you'll find that, while right-wing, he brings a fresh, nuanced perspective that out classes the others on the list--and outclasses Safire, too.
He should have publicly apologized for that Wellstone column, though. It's a true obscenity.

Denying other points of view is akin to blindness, unless, of course, your just trying to lay on the snark.
I was trying to snark it up a bit, but in all sincerety, I'm not sure that I do believe in the possibility of an intelligent Republican, at least, if we can make a distinction between Republicanism and conservatism.
It's hard for me to see how anyone with much intelligence could look at the last four years and vote for more of the same. (Excluding, I guess, high-income wankers who just want their tax cut; they're not so much stupid as evil.)
I don't want to "deny other points of view", but some points of view, I think everyone will agree, are simply out of bounds. I can say with confidence that there is no such thing as an intelligent Klan member; by virtue of being in the Klan, you are stupid (and/or evil).
My thinking about the Republican party nowadays is pretty much like my thinking about the KKK. No person of reasonable character and intelligence would affiliate themselves with either organization.

Also, a theologist friend of mine, who also happens to be a scientist, has established a completely objective formula which proves conclusively and unambiguously that liberalism is wholly derived from Satan, whereas conservatism is derived from God. Not only that, but his friend seems to have come up with a formula or equation of some kind that indirectly proves the existence of God and Satan. So, firefighter's friend must be, like, the most important thinker in the history of the world.

I have to ask the same question as Alice Marshall upthread - why do they have to find another conservative? It's not like Safire was the lone winger at the Times. Why can't they just find someone good who isn't already committed to slanting everything he or she writes?

There is documented proof that most journalists are liberals and vote democrate. Tehre is a survey. Deny it if you will, with your so called facts, lie-berals! - Free Market Firefighter
Yes there are many journalists that think they are liberals - that think they care. But their "advice" ain't no good ... they really are just as shilling as the next guy ... and they hardly help the cause ... and the Dems. would do a good job to tune them out.
I give you Kristof as an example. Heck - I bet Tom Friedman even fancies himself a liberal.
But as someone pointed out, the real bias in the news-media comes from the publishers, et al, who tend to be your typical big-business, let's make as much money now, conservative Rethugs.
Also, as my conservative friend and I can agree - much of the media bias problem is not because journos are liberal or publishers are conservative, but because the media has an obsession with sticking the "narrative". It is both my friend's and my experience, ever since we were opinion columnists at our respective undergrad papers, that journalists love to write simple stories and use pat phrases whenever possible (I tried to write a news-story once and the news editor/future journalist insisted on using the phrase "first annual" to describe the event I covered even though it wasn't supposed to be an annual event, because, in his mind, whenever you have a big event for the first time, it is always the "first annual" event!). Part of our problem is that the Rethugs, not being members of the reality based community and hence not being bothered by the complexities and nuances of reality, have a much simpler story to tell ... which the Heathers in the media just eat up. Whereas the Dems. story is too complicated for their minds which are too simple to deviate from the narrative.
Bob Somerby documents this all of the time ... and he is not afraid to call a foul even when the narrative benefits the left.
So the fact that journalists may be registered Dems. or something doesn't matter a bit if they cannot/will not/are prohibited from telling the story as it is as opposed to according to some MediaCO approved, pseudo-objective, pseudo-balanced narrative which often is inherently biased toward the Rethugs and against us.

My guess is that they are afraid of the unholy chorus of bitching and moaning that they will get from the Right-wingers like firefighter if they dare replace a conservative columnist with a sane -- oops, I mean, "not conservative" -- columnist.

I'm thinking his friend is Ricky Vandal. Didn't that mystic warrior babe who appeared to little Ricky reveal all?

As if the NYT gives a shit what any of its readers actually think.
Go ahead. Write letters. Okrent only reads enough of them to practice typing "fuck you and your mother" over and over again in response.
Cancel the subscription. Whichever asshole they hire to replace the one they just lost will still be a loathesome, vile excuse for a human being.

They stole that senate seat, just like they stole the one in Georgia. They couldn't win on merits, so they just lied every single day through their teeth to demean and slander some great politicians. Of all the things that disgust me, the defamation of that funeral and the dragging of Cleland through the mud are near the top of the list.

JasonCravatt--Anybody who would write such vile stuff about Paul Wellstone does not deserve the NYT op-ed pedestal. Period. And tena and alice are right, there are enough wingers on their op-ed page as it is--Bobo doesn't need any help.

Given that the entire American, media appartus tilts heavily toward the right, why do we need to have greater balance in a liberal paper such as the NYT. There's enough conservative papers, radio & news outlets without the NYT needing to have balance.
If anything, the NYT should seek to assure a greater voice for the liberal end of the spectrum. When there's a liberal FOX news, numbers of liberal talk radio stations, an equal number of liberal small & middle size papers, then the NYT should seek greater balance.

NYT always needs more conservative thought to balance the blatant liberal leftist bias that permeates it. Can't you liberals see that? Do you really think there is only one side to your story? No wonder you lost -- you are self centered and have no moral values.
Has this guy ever even read the Times?
Note the idiotic sense that ideas can be placed on a continuum, charateristic of someone who has never encountered an idea.
So, it doesn't matter if someone's a congential liar, so long as they 'balance' the 'liberal' NYT? It's like the story Homer told Lisa about his bypass surgery.

Caldwell's treatment of the Wellstone funeral was disgraceful and his refusal to publicly correct his statements based on the fact that he hadn't actually observed or even investigated in depth the events he "reported" was a further disgrace. That said, I have to add that the articles I've actually read by Caldwell are far superior to David Brooks and he's (generally) one of the few intelligent people who write for the Weekly Standard. And in order to sit in Safire's chair, isn't a prerequisite at least the occasional column marked by complete and total dishonesty balanced by periodic displays of nuance and insight on a handful of issues ? (Hopefully embarrassing seances with Nixon and crackpot phone-ins from Sharon will disappear along with Safire. ) Not defending Caldwell on this garbage, except to say that if he wrote for the Times he'd most likely become the third most interesting columnist they publish. Tom is a fool, Bob's boring and David is a total twit.

Canceling one's subscription to the NYT is not the answer. Its liberal & needs liberal support & pressure to ensure it stays liberal.
The best way is to constantly put pressure on them, through letters, emails, to keep them on the right track. Heaven knows its worked for the right wing. I email the NYT about once a month & know I get them thinking. Ex.: I and a number of friends contacted them about their initial reporting that rally attendees were not enthusiastic about Kerry. I got back an apologetic response & they dropped this meme (I'm sure lots of other liberals also contacted them). Contrast their rather favorable reporting toward Kerry with the way they treated Gore. I heavily suspect a lot of progressives got on their tail to not try that crap.

Firefighter you're damn right I'm the freakin spawn of Satan. You should get to know Satan better, he knows you very, very well. Until you get to know him better, he'll just keep controlling you.
I agree with the comment that people should write in and say "Hire Caldwell only with a written apology over the Wellstone lies", including thorough explanation of exactly how big the lies are, and vetted by Krugman. I think one real factual apology from a bona fide conservative about the Wellstone memorial will do us more good than another left-of-center NYTimes Columnist who will simply be ignored and demonized by the cons. Although, I would be highly in favor of trading Dowd in for a real liberal without the extra fluff, thank you very much...

besides, Friedman is a conservative anyways, although he is not frequently described as such. He's an old-school, Teddy Roosevelt-style conservative. I've never heard the guy espouse a liberal or left-of-center sentiment in I don't know how many columns of his I've read...
If not Dowd, I'd be happy to trade Friedman in for a real liberal as well, or hell, how about both?? I say trade them both in for one real liberal.
And all of Frank Rich's recent writings in the Times are very well worth reading, he's kicking ass.

Something to keep in mind when dealing with publications ...
90+% of revenue comes from advertising.
So cancelling your subscription really has little impact; rates are calculated based on circulation, of which subscriptions are a part, but are only re-calculated annually.
Boycotting the advertisers, though, now that can put a pinch in the pocketbook pretty quickly.
Anything which causes advetisers to decrease or cease advertising hurts the bottom-line in fairly short order.
They (publishers of periodicals) would rather you cancelled than went after the advertisers.

I'm trying to figure out the "best" angle on this Times column bit. Obviously the best thing would be to have Safire replaced by an actually lefty, which would provide the "balance'" that allegedly fuels the Times choices - someone at least as critically and analytically left-wing as, say, Eric Alterman. (The truth is that Krugman is a moderate liberal who, like Howard Dean, is saddled with integrity and a distaste for lies, corruption and crackpot incompetence. That's what makes guys like Krugman and Dean seem so "left" in today's political envirionment.)
But assuming that the Times feels bound by some twisted interpretation of the spectrum of acceptable political philosophy, and that a conservative gets the Safire chair, should we hope that they appoint somebody who's capable of self -criticism, an accomplished writer, occasionally contrarian towards right-wing CW and smarter than most, or should we hope that they appoint either a flaming ideologue like Krauthammer (not likely since he's already at the WaPo) or a dumb-as-a-post hack like Fred Barnes. I'm thinking that having Fred Barnes on the Times op-ed page along with Brooks would make conservatism seem more like the ideology of the somnambulent than a serious political philosophy. And what's wrong with that ?

Bingo.
This is also why, despite the fact that I don't see Krugman and Dean as being all that "left," I still have the utmost respect for them.
Their idea of being moderate, unlike, say, Joe Lieberman's, does not involve utter capitulation to the Right.
truth is that Krugman is a moderate liberal who, like Howard Dean, is saddled with integrity and a distaste for lies, corruption and crackpot incompetence. That's what makes guys like Krugman and Dean seem so "left" in today's political envirionment
Bingo.

Zolofter-And of course the idea of Lieberman being a moderate instead of a right wing corporate shill needs to be stamped out. He wwould be the last jew to leave Germany.

To add further fuel to this fire, I would rather see the Times publish regular columns by Pat Buchanan than any of the other right-wing folks mentioned as heirs to Safire. You'd get insightful stuff that went against the grain of "acceptable discourse" on issues related to the Middle East and a constant reminder of just how wack and offensive "cultural conservatives" can be when it comes to social issues and religious dogma. A very weird "twofer" that would be more to our advantage than some toilet-trained twit sugar-coating death and destruction to anybody who stumbles into BushCo's crosshairs.

we agree with the turn mention of the devotedly masochistic Job Loserman has taken, and it is because of his actions and not his very public and very fake religion. This is a guy who bends over backwards to kiss the asses of people who hate him and will hurt him just as soon as it's possible, while peeing on people who would help or befriend him. Let him get exactly what he's praying for: a Gilead where the National Minister declares that everyone with Jewish blood must "return home" (to Israel) to bring closer the return of Baby Jesus.
And he decided to go after song lyrics while Central Americans were getting killed and terrorized by the thousands. Real moral priorities this piece of shit has. And he went out of his way to stab Gore in the back in Florida (but then, how could he find fault with his Republican friends?).

That said, I have to add that the articles I've actually read by Caldwell are far superior to David Brooks
as would be anything written, by even some of the semi literate trolls that visit here. including myself.
he is really an idiot, with an appalling lack of imagination, and a poor grasp of society at large. ohh look at me i'm Bobo. i'm important hear me roar.

Also, a theologist friend of mine, who also happens to be a scientist . . . liberalism is wholly derived from Satan, whereas conservatism is derived from God. And I'm not talking about mere opinion here, I'm talking about completely objective empirical proof!

And he went out of his way to stab Gore in the back in Florida
I'm still pissed at Gore for picking Lieberman in the first place.
He shouldn't even have considered Lieberman, much less actually picked him.
It's frustrating that Kerry was so much smarter than Gore, such a better candidate, and in the end the result was about the same as in 2000. Puts the lie, I think, to those who claim that recent Democratic electoral failures are the result of not having a "compelling" enough candidate.
The Republicans won with George W. Fucking Bush, about the most unappealing candidate I've seen in a long time, especially in 2000, before he became a fetishized "war president".
I think the election would have turned out about the same with any Republican facing any Democrat, assuming no extreme cases (e.g. Schwartzeneger (sp?) v. Lieberman).

Compare Caldwell's words about Wellstone to those uttered by President Bush. It is even more telling to contrast Bush's Wellstone good riddance with his glowing eulogy for Strom Thurmond.
...This president's smallness and partisanship even extend to the dead. Commenting in the tragic death of the popular Democratic Senator Paul Wellstone in an October 25, 2002 plane crash, this was the best Bush could muster for an opponent:
"Paul Wellstone was a man of deep convictions, a plain-spoken fellow who did his best for his state and for his country. May the good Lord bless those who grieve."
Compare to that to his glowing words on June 27, 2003 for the late Republican Senator from South Carolina, the racist and segregationist Strom Thurmond:
"Senator Strom Thurmond led an extraordinary life. He served in the Army during World War II, earning a Bronze Star for valor and landing at Normandy on D-Day. He served his country as Senator, Governor, and state legislator and was a beloved teacher, coach, husband, father, and grandfather. While campaigning across South Carolina with him in 1988, I saw first hand the tremendous love he had for his constituents, and the admiration the people of South Carolina had for him. He was also a friend and I was honored to have hosted his 100th birthday at the White House. Laura joins me in sending our prayers and condolences to the entire Thurmond family. He will be missed."

I CANNOT BELIEVE THIS. If the New York Times hires this hack, many, many, many Minnesotans will do everything they can to get this man fired. Stupidity cannot explain what he did. He DELIBERATELY told lie after lie after lie about this memorial service and by doing this essentially handed the election over to Norm Coleman, that fake turncoat, when Walter Mondale had been leading in this election. (After becoming the candidate after Wellstones death). This stuff was just vile, hateful, madeup stuff and it was deliberately done by the Republicans because they had these same "talking points" that we all know so well that all the republican talking heads were using. I remember one hack, Sarah Janacek I think who was one of these people they kept putting on TV spouting this crap. And then to find out he is Robert Novak's son-in-law. Have you heard Al Franken talk about this guy? Well, there are thousands and thousands of Minnesotans who feel the same way, and 20,000 of them were AT the service and know well about the lies. The whole service was just fine, Wellstone's best friend gave a great eulogy but made a mistake at the end where he said something like "let's win this for Paul". The republicans made a big deal of this and they said it was a political rally. I swear, steam is coming out of my ears I am so mad. Thank you for bringing his name back to my recollection. He did piss on the grave of Wellstone and many grieving constituents who saw him as a Senator who actually did serve the people and the environment, they are very rare if not extinct. Fuck this guy.

Please allow me to respectfully suggest that (a) a political rally, which this was admittedly not, would have been a fine memorial indeed to Paul Wellstone, and an honor to the values he stood for; and (b) you would be a good deal less angry today had someone been able to articulate the crassness of Coleman's demagogery eloquently enough to move the electorate against him.
Unfortunately, the days of Humphrey, Mondale and McGovern are behind us; this is the age of Jesse Ventura.

"the Chicago Sux-Times picked up Mark Steyn to make Novak look reasonable"
While reading Jeff Jacoby's latest variation on those poor oppressed conservatives the thought came that he'd written the same column at least ten times over the past few years, every single conservative columnist has written the same column ten times. Every column written by a conservative has been written ten times by every other conservative columnist.
With that record only one per country is actually needed.
It would be an improvement to replace conservative columnists with ads. First, they can't object since the sacred market is more important than anything else, second, it would bring money into the paper and money is god to conservatives, third, there is some consequence if they lie in an ad so the truth quotient would rise.

You are either a troll or an idiot. Anyone who WOULD EVER write crap like he did does not deserve a column. They were complete, calculated lies. No excuse. I don't care how good you think his other columns are. He has no soul. And I bet he would refuse to apologize because he has no soul.

Coleman kept "above the fray." In other works, his hacks did the dirty work. Remind you of someone we know and love in the white house? Now Coleman is doing dubya's dirty work. Natch.

As a Minnesotan (and a DFL precinct chair), I can't go without commenting: Someone should tell the Times that Caldwell's not welcome in Minnesota. And neither is any paper that'd have him.
If they hire him, I'll see to it they're driven out of here entirely.
No one who disrespects the memory of Paul Wellstone like that gets away with it. Not here.

As a Minnesotan and a member of the DFL State Central Committee, I'm right behind you, Jake. I'll even take it one step further...I won't stop at the NYT. Any paper or politician who disrespects Paul Wellstone will find they have no welcome in Minnesota. We've shown the Repukes in this state that we can beat them at their own game; heck, we unseated their 4-term Assistant House Majority Leader with a 24-year old substitute teacher and carpenter, Andy Welti. His secret? Camp Wellstone.

"They manipulated the entire evening with the media as a willing accomplice. Sen. Norm Coleman won the election because of it, and because Sen. Norm Coleman won, the Dems lost control of the Senate."
Er, Norm Coleman won because Paul Wellstone didn't run a very good campaign. Even his campaign manager, a guy named Mondale, said so.

Actually, Caldwell writes a decent enough column for the Financial Times on Saturdays.
As conservative pundits go, he's one of the better ones. Although he has a weird hang-up about people with dual citizenships. Maybe an ex- had two citizenships or something.

Paul, you're an idiot or trying to be snarky and not succeeding. Mondale was his Wellstone's manager. He was put up as the dem candidate after Wellstone died. Coleman was behind until the memorial service, Mondale was beating him. It was the reason why Coleman won, and it was dirty and pissing on Wellstone's grave. Bite me!
