Not a cat-astrophy. Oscar might have a hard time with Cat-agorizing the film though. It's not exactly a Dogumentary. It might fall into the Short-hair film area...

All the pics and little movies we took of the big guy, which we thought were ho-hum at the time, are total treasures now.

My cats who get along very well, still get into playful (I think) but nasty little cat-fights a few times a week. Once they start, they're far better entertainment than anything I may be watching on TV. I guess I should start filming some of them. The little one totally dominates the big one with superior strategy and tactics. SHe makes her daddies very proud.

Stinky, I'm sorry about your cat. My 17 year old is in renal failure, and I cry everyday watching him. He has been part of my life since I was 19. We grew up together, and contemplating my life without him is unbearable. So, my heart goes out to you.

I am impressed that your wad of electrical cords look just like mine! You must also live in a house that was built before people had the need for more than one outlet in each room. Ours was built in 1917 and if my husband uses the toaster while I dry my hair pretty soon all of the lights go out...

We just had to put our Big Guy to sleep over the weekend, which was one of the hardest things I ever had to do.
I'm so sorry.
Our senior cat, Saffron, has a thyroid condition and is experiencing renal failure. I keep thinking as I leave for a week on the road that I might be saying goodbye to her for the last time, but she's ornery and has been sticking around. Maybe it's so she can make it to one more adoptaversary (December 6).
I've been wondering about putting her down, but she actually is doing pretty well according to the vet. My animals always seem to make the decision for me in the end.

Let's be clear here: "Christ" is shorthand for the fucked-up, backward ass, violent, hate-filled beliefs of Christian fundamentalism. It is not the Biblical "Christ" and his words of, you know, love, peace, and fellowship. The Biblical Christ never says, "Thou shalt exhort thine enemies to 'Bring it on.'" The Rude Pundit has said before that the Christ in the Bible is a liberal who invites us all to party on in a socialist heaven. That is a dude the Rude Pundit would like to break bread and fish with while suckin' down wine-from-water. That, however, is not the Christ who has been shoved in our faces by the evangelical right. They want Rambo Jesus, kickin' ass, a warring motherfucker who shows fags and secularists they better love the Lord or they're gettin' drop kicked into the fiery bowels of hell. Or voted out of office.

Not to be a downer or anything, but I've had a cat that also died of renal failure. Why the hell is this like the most common cause of feline old age death? But the Rude Pundit asked, and, yea, the readership answered. You responded to the Rude Pundit's request to donate your stories of Christ weariness with an outcry of outrage over the outreach of out-of-their-minds born agains. From sea to shining sea, in states blue and red, you have poured your damaged souls out. The Rude Pundit hears your cries, and, yea, come to the Rude Pundit and he shall caress you in his loving arms into secular ecstasy, paying close attention to your nipples. Here's a sampler (with minor editing) of the nearly 100 stories you sent in (and, as usual, the Rude Pundit makes no guarantees about the "truthfulness" of these tales of woe):

From Sargasm: I had an awful first experience with those right wing nuts. When I was 10, my little brother started going to Sunday school with the neighborhood kids. A bus would pick them up and take them to church. I didn't want to go, even though these kids' parents would always encourage me to attend. Then one Sunday, I realized my brother was coming home with candy. He had received it for answering questions on the day's lessons on the bus ride back. Being a sweet tooth fanatic, and just an overall know-it-all kid, I thought it was a sweet deal. So that next Sunday I went to Sunday school with them. The biblical stories were alright but sort of boring. On the ride back I answered a few questions and got some candies. I
thought I had hit the jack pot. As we were all piling out of the bus, one kid turned to me and sneered, "You damn nigger." I was frozen by the hatred that I felt and being that it was my first racist incident in my life I didn't know what to do. I felt like shit. I confided in a friend and asked her what I should do.

thought I had hit the jack pot. As we were all piling out of the bus, one kid turned to me and sneered, "You damn nigger." I was frozen by the hatred that I felt and being that it was my first racist incident in my life I didn't know what to do. I felt like shit. I confided in a friend and asked her what I should do.

Too bad cats didn't get the opposable thumbs.
You have not met my Bean, you can actually shake her hands. Unfortunately
the following does not demonstrate the fact, but I will keep trying to document the catchers mits. Her coloring gets in the way. This is a double dipping, as I also introduce my good boy Kitainy, who is actually fascinated by Bean, He cant get enough of her, though she seems ambivalent to his attentions. Kitainy Yev and Bean

Dryer sheets get rubbed on forearms and hands only. Sometimes when that doesn't get it all, I'll rub the bottoms of my legs (especially poly pants) or feet (acrylic socks).
As for rubbing it anywhere else, I'll not be responsible for results lasting longer than four hours.

You mean Kerry's using our money to make sure he didn't get cheated out of the Ohio vote? The vote that, if Kerry were declared the winner, would make him president instead of Bush, since Kerry would then win the Electoral College? And we're supposed to object to Kerry using our money for that purpose?
Seriously, where does Karl find these guys? Better trolls, indeed. Maybe we could advertise for some.

I had to put my old guy, Yellowman, down for his thyroid condition and renal failure. He was 21 years old. (He was an all yellow cat and named for the albino Reggae singer King Yellowman.) It was one of the most traumatic experiences in my life. I cried for weeks.
Just today, as I walked through my living room, I swear I saw him swipe at my leg.
21 years is a long time. He was a good cat. Dignified, constant-- a perfect companion.
Hope you're warm and well-fed, wherever you are, Yellowman.

Why the hell is this like the most common cause of feline old age death? Makes you wonder if there's something in machine processed cat food that after a lifetime finally catches up with them.
I had another cat who died of renal failure at 18. Apparently cats have very specialized kidneys--they can drink salt water, in fact. The problem is that means these are organs that will fall apart since they do so much work throughout their lifetimes.
Also, our understanding of feline nutrition is only now catching up to reality. Most "adult" cat food replaces fat and protein with carbs, since they're cheaper. That causes a lot of problems with diabetes and associated issues with kidneys. My vet now recommends that we keep our 1 year old cat, Sam, on kitten food forever.

Stinky, I'm sorry about your cat. My 17 year old is in renal failure, and I cry everyday watching him. He has been part of my life since I was 19. We grew up together, and contemplating my life without him is unbearable. So, my heart goes out to you.

Tracey
Thank you all for your condolences.
When our guy stopped responding to his medication and he stopped eating, we knew it was time to help him on his way.
Tracey, I feel for you, too, our cat had FIV and went downhill very quickly and unexpectedly. He adopted us 12 years ago and was with us for all the major milestones in our lives - first jobs, first house, a marriage, the death of a parent, the births of nieces and nephews...
I know it's a hard decision to make, but if you have to make it, be assured it's very dignified and compassionate. Our guy basically just went to sleep, he wasn't in pain, he wasn't distressed, it wasn't gross or horrible - I was with him the whole time. The animal hospital staff were very sensitive and kind.
I will miss him terribly, though. He will never be replaced. But it makes you appreciate your four-legged friends and hold them a little tighter.

Why the hell is this like the most common cause of feline old age death? Makes you wonder if there's something in machine processed cat food that after a lifetime finally catches up with them.
It's my understanding that pet foods with a lot of dyes and artificial ingredients are tough on a cat's system - notably on the liver.

On the feline renal failure note, what's interesting is that vets will often prescribe Valium (diazepam) for cats in renal failure. Believe it or not, apparently it helps their kidnyes. Once my poor thing died, I just used up the rest of her perscription. Helped me get thru it, I guess.

It's $200,000. I'm more worried about Bush's coming economic catastrophe in terms if trillions than I am about what Kerry's doing with recounts. Kerry had $15 million left over after the election. He gave most of that to the DNC already.

I do think the votes should be counted, but I am not suprised that big money names such as Soros, who supposedly support Democrats and liberal values, aren't stepping in when not assured direct profit.
I think John Kerry is playing roulette with your money, playing the odds, showing some good faith dollars in hopes of gaining a minion should Gregoire come from behind to win.
No ethics at all. He'll sit on his little pile of your money and spread it around as it benefits him.
But it's your party, none of my business.

Mine is in one of those moods tonight where she suddenly rushes madly from room to room for no reason.
We've had something of a cool snap today, and that seems to flip a switch in my guys that triggers a whole new level of insanity. Jack and Ava have been tearing around the house, quite literally boucing off the walls, all day. They've now worn themselves out. Ava is snoozing, and Jack is about to do so.

I have seen numerous spellings and picked a shorter one because my fingers are lazy. As for Bast, she's the cat goddess though sometimes they confuse the two goddesses. Bast seems to have had the more fun worshippers. Pilgrims to her main temple would travel down the Nile by boat singing and dancing and the women would flash people on the riverbank. Then they would party hearty at the temple.

Kitties seem to have it a lot harder than doggies. My guy gets only about half a dose of processed stuff and then reverts to things like cheese, green beans, a nice piece of chicken, some schmalz, a little bit of rice - in other words, things I'd feed my relatives at Sunday dinner. The processed stuff is actually sort of optional. From what I remember reading about doggies, people and other mammals, the requirements for grains, meats, fats, and vegies remain pretty static over the years, with the worst consequences resulting from the withholding of fats (that one studied at length by the British, during and post WWII). Processed foods are hard to process thru all of our kidneys, doggies, kitties and people.
I can only endorse this as a result of an afternoon spent tidying up THE ENTIRE YARD as a result of Arthur's fervently vigorous system. Yes, he got to eat some scraps of the frittata with chorizo. So?

If you can't see that Bush is as big of an opportunist as anyone in politics, than I'm sorry for you. The man had no ambitions other than drinking and partying until he was nearly twice as old as I am. No. Just that all politicians are generally opportunists, and sleazy. Kerry has had his sites on the WH since he was in his 20's. Nothing wrong with that. At least he had goals and ambitions, while W was swerving drunk around Houston, hitting trash cans, shooting his bothers in the ass with BB guns, killing frogs, and challenging his father to a dual on the front lawn.
I'll take the least of the worst, thank you.

Now if they had asked Kerry for recount money and he had stiffed them, *that* would be wrong. He has said time and again that he wants to be sure the votes are counted correctly wherever they are cast, whatever the result.
That, friend, is called serving the public interest. You won't learn much about that watching Bush work.

Perfect example is Senator Feinstein of CA. While maintaining an opposed position on the authorization of force for Iraq for weeks before the vote, Feinstein went against her own position to vote for the authorization of force.
And then wouldn't you know it: her husband gets a 600 million dollar contract out of the war.

"Rossi/Gregoire Washington state gubernatorial recount."
Fine with me; I was born in Washington, and my mother still lives there.
Back to our regularly scheduled topic: there is nothing like furry love. I feel sad for all those who have lost or are soon to lose their cat people. My Blue cat died this summer, and I took two days off to cry. We'd had fifteen years together. I have a new kitten, but I will always remember my Blue with special fondness. Okay, so is it against the law to give money to this recount? Is it against the DNC's charter? And isn't this going to help a Deomcratic candidate on the state level, which is really where the Democrats should focus their efforts if they even hope to dream of a resurgence?
In other words, why is this unethical other than "because I said so"?

ether: quit huffing the stuff. Your brain is not working quite right. Kerry puts money toward another Dem's recount instead of his own. It isn't selfish or unethical. It's an attempt to strengthen the Democratic party. Why are we going to be bothered by that? If the situation was reversed, what should Bush be doing?

OT, and I mean really OT-
This afternoon I heard a song. It was a cover of The Who's "Baba O'Reilly" (Teenage Wasteland). But it was with accordians. The vocals were straight, but there was accordians.

At the time Kerry donated the money Gregoire was still $700,000 in the hole. If he were helping the party he would have gave the whole amount, not just enought to be remembered should she win.
This illustrates Kerry's opportunistic nature. It is unethical because he is dispersing the money based upon his own political considerations rather than that of his donors.
Would you rather have Kerry pay the whole sum and get the recount going, or have him pay a chunk and continue searching for donors?
If you were him, holding true to your ideals, wouldn't you have done everything possible to help your party in a broader sense?
No, if you were Kerry you would throw out 200,000 on 37 red and hope to hit it big.

Do you think it's ethical?
You're worried about the ethical implications of what John Kerry does with the remainder of his election cash?
I would think that, as a true conservative, you would be very, very concerned about the ethical and practical implications of the Bush Boy and your beloved repukes draining of the treasury in the last 4 years, the running up of the most massive deficits in history, and the runaway spending that has occurred under your boy's watch.
Please compare and contrast Mssrs. Kerry and Bush Boy's ethics vis a vis the above.

Palestinian Cabinet Minister Saeb Erekat condemned the killing of a wanted Islamic Jihad man in the West Bank by the Israel Defense Forces on Friday, saying it "undermines the efforts we're exerting" to reach a truce with militants.
IDF troops shot and killed the militant during an arrest raid in the West Bank before dawn Friday.
The troops surrounded the house where Mahmoud Hamed Kamil, 27, was staying, in the village of Raba southwest of Jenin, and instructed him to come out.
They shot Kamil, who was armed with a pistol, when he tried to escape, the IDF said.
"Soldiers called out for occupants of a house which they suspected contained wanted men to come out," an IDF spokeswoman said. "The man was shot after he was spotted carrying a weapon as he tried to escape."
Security forces said Kamil has been involved in suicide bombings and shooting attacks, Israel Radio reported.
Also in the West Bank, security forces arrested eight Palestinian suspects overnight.

ether,
So you're not upset that Kerry gave any money, but that he didn't give enough? Am I reading you correctly? Frankly, I think you're making a whole lot of assumptions in this - both on Kerry's character and the circumstances surrounding the donation - and I'm curious as to whom this slant on things come from.
Again, is it illegal? Is it against DNC charter? Is Kerry breaking any rules of conduct apart from yours? You ask do I think it's "ethical", and honestly, I don't know. I don't really see what the problem is - it seems to be little more than "politics as usual" to me - so I really can't say.

Kerry might donate some of that extra campaign cash to the soup kitchens in Boston, and Chelsea, and Medford, and Arlington, and Hull, and extend outwar from there. maybe a one-time donation at Xmas time. just a thought. micropennies would come from mrs. jfrjfrjfr, and we would sleep better.
or flowers for the boys and girls from MA burried in arlington national...
or a random million to some redstate unemployed person, with explicit instructions to give all $1,000,000 away in 21 days, local public-access crew to follow. all video captured copyright assigned to the DNC for 2006 midterm election footage.
or maybe catfood for every cat in every shelter in america.
there's something good he should do with that cash, just don't know what.

ether,
Are you sure the DNC disapproves of the way this money is spent? And as far as I remember, money contributed to a campaign should be used at the discretion of the candidate's office, right? Once I send it in, it's out of my hands, right?
Personally, I'm not a real big fan of the DNC or the "Washington system", and like the idea of leftover campaign money going to help in local races. You're expecting me to be outraged, and I simply don't understand why. And, frankly, as this whole deal is a thimble compared to some of the things the Bush administration is trying to pull (such as the Social Security nonsense Atrios mentions below), I've got my hands a bit full, outrage-wise.

Ted can you point me to a report showing Kerry has donated the rest of his money?
"According to the two officials familiar with Kerry's account:
• He has $16 million left from the primaries.
• Some $4 million to $5 million of that will be transferred to a legal and compliance fund to help pay for the costs of fighting or resolving 16 Federal Election Commission complaints pending against Kerry. That legal fund already has $8 million.
• Once the transfer is made and all primary season bills are paid, Kerry will have just shy of $10 million in his primary campaign account.
The rest of the money could be used to mount a bid for the presidency in 2008, but the advisers said that had nothing to do with saving the money."

in other news, eight suspects were arrested on the eastasia front.

Ted, I don't think the kid is being polite, I mean is threadjacking to stir up a reaction to a non issue, attempting to impugn Kerry's integrity as a supporter of the punkass chimp?
I agree, but he could be a lot worse.
Anyway, this whole recount finance issue is so insignificant to me that I couldn't care less.
How about David Dreier (R-CA) going on 26 different overseas vacations with his gay lover (who is also on his payroll earning $156k per year) all on the taxpayers' dime, and within 3 years time?
Do you really want to talk about finance ethics with us, ether? What with all the shit we have on republican congressman, and not to mention the financial travesties of Chicken Caesar?

Thank you, kent, but that's just the 5&Diner, the only really all night dive in Phoenix. Just around the corner from the house. If you eat on the patio you can bring your four-legged guy with you (if s/he sits down and is a good mammal). There's a breakfast deal of eggs and machaca which is just - well, at 5am, it's just what you need....

nothing ether said about Kerry's so-called "unethical" behavior makes me think it knows anything about ethics. Typical Bush cheerleader, I guess.
Well said, my friend.
Actually, the troll is trying some ineffective sleight of hand here.
The troll wants to shine a light on John Kerry's handling of what amounts to be chickenfeed left over from his campaign so we don't look at what havoc the Bush Boy is wreaking on every front.
Wrong place to try that trick.

I honestly think the DNC has greater sense for where the money is needed the Kerry does.
I simply think Kerry will use the money for his own exploits, rather than for the interests of the party.
The same can be said for Bush's yet to be distibuted leftover warchest.

We don't care!!. You don't seem to get that I trust Kerry's ethics infinitely more than Bush's. I dispute the info you have, but not enough to bother with it. If Kerry were spending the excess cash on a massive yacht or something, I might be concerned. But he's spending it on helping Democrats.
If you don't have anything else to do, can you please move on to another topic?

ether,
Mayhap you're right. Mayhap you're not. I'm no expert in such matters and I'd wager to guess that neither are you ('course you could be). Now, that being said, this really doesn't boil down to a question of ethics, but more a question of function. You disagree with the way Kerry is spending the money, but it's not legal and you've basically failed to prove that it's "unethical". It's just your opinion. Personally, I think it's unethical to, say, ignore a group that's attacked the United States, and instead pump over $200 million a day into a complete mess to fight a country that had nothing to do with said attacks. And I think it's unethical to drive an SUV when you don't really need one.
But those are just opinions, see. So, you asked me if I thought Kerry's actions were unethical. I ask you to explain to my why they were. You failed to do so. Therefor, I still fail to see why it's unethical.

Exactly, can we talk about cedret energy policy meetings with maps of iraqi oilfields layed out long before the war started. How about the 23 or more "justifications" to send our blood and treasure into a meatgrinder ala vietnam redux.
Maybe acting like you have a mandate when serious questions are raised about the conduct of your party vis a vis voter suppression and disenfranchisement. The lies the War profiteering the looting of the treasury.........and on and on and on.
This tack is pure rove, pick a non issue hang onto it like a pitbull on a postmans leg and attempt to distract attention from shit that really matters, or the fact that they can't govern.

If Dubya and his temple of doom at the Pentagon thought Saddam to be an artificial or transparent must-have, they should be immediately boiled alive in the Library of Congress and kept alive long enough so that the families who lost a loved one can spit just once, before raging heat forces the body to succomb to the ghoulish soup.

Now that I have a BLOG of sorts, and photos sitting undeveloped in a camera I keep forgetting to take to be developed, I look forward to throwing a pic of my Catcher's-Mitt Monster into the mix. IF he deigned to let me get a decent one on this roll.
Meanwhile, the cat, squid, nudibranch, and beautiful-kid-with-fat-li'l-cheeks blogging is a great way to spend Fridays.
There is also a rather nice collection of Diebold posters linked at my BLOG, since nothing much seems to be happening with the LTE Project.

Ted, you checked extensions lately? There's one now for Firefox 1.0 that puts an automatic TinyURL maker under your Tools menu -- you don't even have to go to TinyURL.com to do it.
It's called... Tiny URL Creator. (Imaginative.) Very handy if you do much long-URL work -- I'm still trying to break the habit of all that cutting & pasting.

No. It's not open-source, and it's proprietary, but it's free. It is SO much better, I can't even tell you. It's loaded with features you never knew you needed, but are great. I work in IT, and have tried practically every browser, and this is the best so far. Very stable, more than anything I've used so far. And it's installation will migrate your IE settings and favorites for you. It's also faster.
The only downside I've seen is that the scroll wheel function of the mouse causes FF to scroll more incrementally and slowly than IE and Nutscrape.

Philalethes,
I think FF is around 8 megs for linux and 6 for windows (pulling numbers out of my ass) It has been pretty damn good for the last year or so. I would reccomend you give it another whorl.
BTW if you havent used tabs, you haven't lived. Tabbed Browsing rocks the house. Ever since that feature showed up in Galeon a gecko based browser, I can't look back.

But marijuana really is dangerous. You get caught with it in the wrong place, you can ruin your world. I have relatives who have done so. Nice people, too, but a few years in various cells didn't help them much at all.
Of course, asprin, alcohol, scuba diving, having babies and sexual intercourse are also dangerous.

More cat fun facts-Hemingway had a lot of cats at his place in Cuba too. There were as many as fifty-seven cats living at the Finca, all of them given names with an ‘s’ or a ‘z’ in - Crazy, Christian, Ecstasy, Funhouse, Fats, Friendless. Hemingway had a theory that this enabled them to hear their name called more easily.
Boise, the most spoiled cat of them all, was, as far as I can tell, the only living creature Hemingway ever allowed in the room when he was writing, apart from his beloved Black Dog.

Philalethes,
they do have a mac version called camino I believe, yep thats right.
I cant wait to see your funny beast, I have a link to my polydactyl above but she really is not in a position to enjoy her mitts.
Kent, I was just over there earlier this evening. Bean looks a bit like Shock (he's solid black, yellow eyes), although Bean doesn't seem to be almost a yard long and have all that screwy hair goin' on.
Phila: With me, the "error" part is the REALLY important part. If it weren't for Filkertom I'd still be struggling with the damn links.
Ted: Also, when you're checking extensions, look for WeatherFox if you don't already have it. It throws tiny weather icons on your very top menu bar that show you the temp and forecast for a customized number of days -- just by mousing over them, no clicking even necessary to see what the weather's doing.

how is it possible to OD on marijuana--smoke poison labeled marijuana by an insane self-defeating prohibition. Be unhealthy in the first place and have some other problem exacerbated by it. We don't smoke and despise what are now called hippies but seriously this is so much less of a threat, or even an issue, than date rape drug, fight-starting, life-ruining, crash-causing alcohol it isn't funny.

Silleigh,
If AdBlock is a plugin/addon for FF, I don't. But I use other adware/spyware software that keeps my computers quite clean.
But if there's an addon for FF that does that, wouldn't be a bad idea.

I like Avant browser myself. It also has tabbed browsing, but the one cool feature I like is how it drops you right back to where you were when you refresh the haloscan page. Yeah, I'm lazy.
I'm not paranoid though.

"despise what are now called hippies"
Isn't it a little strange to use "hippies" and "now" in the same sentence ? And isn't "despise" a bit strong to use against that particular lifeform ? What happened ? Somebody drag you to Grateful Dead concert back in the nineties ?

Kent: If I copy that template into MSWord, will it do the smart-ass crap it usually does like turn things into bulleted lists because it thinks it's smarter than I am? "It looks like you're trying to code, and don't realize you're too stupid to live. Would you like to go lie down and die now?"
Maybe I'd better use Notepad for that, hmm. Excellent idea. I go blue when editing the template, from holding my breath.

FireFox does that too, but if you just posted, and attempt to 'Reload' the Haloscan window, it asks you if you want to resend the post data as well. You have to close the HS window and reopen if you want to use the 'Reload' feature again without double-posting.

I occasionally love certain software, but after TKDesk broke my heart, I am a fickle lad. But tabs, gotta have em.
Does Opera make a mac system 9 version?
that might be a solution.
why dont I just check in the google tab.

Ted -- I don't get pop-ups and garbage (and I still run AdAware and Spybot frequently -- don't find much unless I've had to use IE), but when I hit a page that's got an annoying graphic on it, AdBlock marks it with a tab. I hit the tab, it throws up a window, I hit OK in the window, and the ad disappears, sometimes for days. Sometimes not. But you can immediately declutter a lot of webpages with Adblock. Also, there will be an "Adblock" square at the bottom right of your browser taskbar that, if you click on it, will show you everything than can be blocked on a particular page. It's great if you browse a lot of newspapers.

Pot doesn't make me paranoid. The culture we live in sure as hell does, though.
And it is possible to overdose on marijuana, but it's usually symptamatic of a pre-existing condition. Most likely an allergy. I had a bud in college who had a very bad reaction to his first puff, not unlike a bee sting. But just consuming mass quantities of pot...well, it would have to be herculean.
And, one has to remember, "overdosing" does not neccessarily equal "dying". I know a cat that's OD'd twice on heroin and he's still kickin', though that's not at all meant to be taken as a recommendation of much of anything.

You might try right click back, then clean out the haloscan window (though you don't have to) and then right click refresh/reload depending on your OS. then it will do the same without closing the window.

I even tried iCab at work, when Eschaton had a ticker ad that was killing IE5/Mac. With Eschaton, iCab stuck the OK button in the smack-dab middle of the comments typing window. Arrgh. I've given up, and there is talk of getting me a decent box.

FF definitely warns you about double-posting. The problem is that you can't refresh after posting, or it will warn you about it, and the only thing you can do is close the window and reopen it, if you want to still use the refresh feature.

Silleigh,
cool, opera homepage only showed an osx
version. Well you could use it for the trial period, send the folder to the trash and download again, but that might get old.
Think about it this way if it makes life easier, It just might be worth paying for it, I don't think they want too much scratch. but then I was always the guy to pay for tools that I knew would pay for themselves when the boss wasn't interested. I still have the tools.

Your best bet is to start by calling all of us who use FireFox treasonous homo Murrka haters who eat feces and dine on fetuses. Then tell us we're the anti-christ, and intend to take over the country and force everyone to engage in ritual sodomy in the town squares (though that might make some of us horny).
Top it all off with a big "Commie faggots!!", and you're ready for the big time!

You know, talking about decent boxes might give a troll a real complex...
True story. Friend of ours received a keepsake cedar chest for Christmas and it was really pleasantly wafting cedar scents all over the place. The rest of us wanted to play cards, but our friend declined, said she just wanted to sit on the couch and sniff her box. Took about 10 minutes for the laughter to die down.

There's the legacy problem -- all of us (5-person art department) dealing with that. Writers can't fileshare with artists using OSX for some reason. My mom had to put down my favorite cat, Eek, a few months ago - she's on the other side of the country, and I never even got to say goodbye (I didn't even find out until months later when I asked how she was; Mom couldn't bring herself to tell me). Bean looks a lot like a non-tortie version, very plush and self-satisfied-looking. She has a brother, who looks like a fluffy gray lion, who has some health issues as well - I made sure to say goodbye to him at the end of my visit, just in case.
Sigh. 14 years is not enough.

Thanks! That's Eek, I just titled it Flat Cat to distinguish it from her Squirrel Cat picture - also cute, but looks even less like her than that one. I should maybe post some of her grown-up pictures...

And if you've never checked out ratemykitten.com, I recommend it highly, especially the Top 20.
My all-time favorite is probably the one who appears to be waving at the camera from inside a cup.

Eli,
She was a beaut, looks like a shorthaired version of bean. The dark torties have a lot of spirit.
One of these days you will get to have another kitten and then a lifelong friend.

I knew it. My last IT gig was in an advertising agency, and I had the pleasure of testing some of the early G3 OSX compatability situation and "Classic Mode" and yup without a substantial increase in memory or processor upgrade not so good.
Hello. Zackly. We're an in-house "ad agency" in addition to producing collateral, catalogs, packaging, and the occasional magazine when they let us slip it in the schedule. And with all the legacy software, Excel only knows how much $$$ it would take us to get right with Jesus, er, OSX. Oh, and the whole other part of the business is Windows-based, meaning that when I send a file to someone Over There, half the time it gets garbled all to hell.
One of our artists has done some incredible animation with his (fabulous) Mac: I highly recommend the original Pencilman, at the top of the page, especially for Mac lovers.

That is so correct. I have a dark grey tortie that is half Egyptian breed, and for some reason is somewhat miniature. But GAWD does that cat have spirit. It's the most needy, most feisty, most engaged cat mind I've ever known.

Aw. Very cute! Does she make wee squeaking noises?
My girlfriend's cat is also a tortie, but is, well, Of The Devil. Actually threw up on the priest when they took her to a pet blessing ceremony at the local church. Is one of those cats who can be very sweet & affectionate one moment, then try to rip your (and by "your", I mean "my girlfriend's") leg open then next. And is diabolically smart.

She does -- and if we say 'Squeek?' to her, she will respond appropriately.
We actually have two tortoiseshells, both of whom are 'holler-impaired' -- we'd already named the first one Doodle, so this one got the name based on her pitiful voice.
Both of them are nuts, though Squeek is the more malicious of the two, playing 'death from above' with the other cats and, occasionally, the dog.
We have four cats, all together -- two tabbies, one gray and one orange, and the torties -- plus a smallish dog. It's quite an interesting household, petwise!

If you were talking to me, well, her noises sound like an adult cat, just miniature, so kinda squeeky at times. Sometimes when you wake her up, she slightly opens her eyes, and makes a faint squeek attempt at a 'meow'. But it's funny you asked that, because when she was a kitten, my boyfriend and I nicknamed her 'The Squeeker'.

Ahh yes the visions of managemnet and ohh jebus.

If anyone remembers, a few weeks ago I was talking about adopting a rescued kitty, a little old lady cat who got kicked out of her home by some walking garbage cleverly disguised as humans.
Well, I did adopt her. I renamed her Pamela, and she's learning it v. quickly. I followed Kent's advice on how to introduce Pamela to Ariel, and it went well. 'Well' meaning, no open warfare, just some hissing and growling, though Pam did take one swipe at Ariel.
I wanted them to stay apart, and putting Pam's food, etc., upstairs made sense because a) she was happier up there and b) she was an abandoned cat who'd been starving, and I didn't want her to have to brave Ariel's wrath in order to come down and eat.
The problem is, I now have an upstairs kitty and a downstairs kitty. Pamela stays upstairs. Ariel still comes up to sleep with me, and to use the litter box (thank god). And the two of them are just fine at such times, walking past each other while studiously pretending the other cat isn't there.
Can anyone tell me if this is a good progression, and whether I should let it run its course to what I hope will be friendship, or at least friendly acquaintence?
Or should I start forcing the issue by carrying Pam downstairs and seeing what happens?

Ha! We have one Mac guy and one Windows guy, both contractors, we call 'em in when we're totally screwed. Nobody even taught the Windows people how to do basic maintenance on their boxes, far as I know. Our Mac guy is OK. He told me once he'd be installing my new HD the next morning and it would take awhile -- "Sleep late, but not Darvocet-and-a-bottle-of-wine late, and it should be ready when you get here."
But we have no one who really understands how the whole thing fails to fit together. Hell, I can't even print to the color printer. bitch, bitch, bitch...

Jeez, good luck with that, Casey. My mom adopted a very sick stray and nursed him back to health and... bulk, but he was just too aggressive and macho for Eek and her brother, so she had a whole elaborate system of zones and buffer rooms for the two sets of cats. Probably a disservice to all of them, but better than the alternative.
Needless to say, that's commiseration, not advice.

Eli & Ted: That's the "silent meow" and it's adorable. Ariel does it once in a while.
My sweet old Jazz, who died over the summer, was one of those cats who pushes his paw up against your mouth - a bit of kitty "I love you" which never fails to melt me. Oh, I miss my darlin' Jazzbeau. ('Course, Jazz never learned to control his claws, and that loving gesture sometimes ended with him almost giving me one heck of a set of lip piercings

Yeah, I know, Ted - I'm one too. But culturally, us guys are supposed to love big slobbery hound dogs, and gals are supposed to love cats and little high-strung yippy dogs they can carry around in their purse.
I know it's sacriligeous, but dogs just don't do it for me. I can appreciate some of them, but I really don't know how to interact with them. I like cats' low-key calm and kittens' adorable feebleness - plus they are more pleasing to all my senses. Well, except taste - I really haven't compared them along that scale, nor do I plan to...

Sorry, I went out for an ale.... am doing the "quest" over at my Uni's pub (trying to finish 52 drinks in as much as a short time as I can,,,, 30 more drinks to go and I've only just started this on tuesday! I'm irish, I can do as much as I can!)
Anyway on that website I was commenting on earlier, it's free to register... I wonder if you could use the "Bugmenot.com" email to get in that website.
I feel really lonely with that Dead Zone always ignoring me. I'm really trying!!
I also write articles on Daily Kos and have my own blog but am cautious with revealing those two. I'm glad to know Atrios is an alumni at my sibling's university (Brown MED right this moment, finishing h/is/er 8th year at Brown). Viva on Thayer's quite nice! Kartabar's new but the calamari's nice, I usually beat people at pool at the GSC...
Enough from me... I've had a bit much to drink at this uni. pub in Boston (the founder of DailyKos went here),

Eli, have you ever seen a book called "The Cathouse"? It's about a pair of total kitty freaks who shared their 1200-sq ft home with up to 11 cats. The entire house was rigged for the cats' delight, with overhead walkways everywhere (even going through the walls) and special built-in box "caves," long carpeted ramps and floor-to-ceiling poles covered in sisal.
The same people have built similar designs for shelters and kitty resorts.
The book even includes a set of plans for those who want to "try this at home, kids!"

CaseyL,
It sounds to me like you have a good thing going. They both have their confort zones and neither cat has run away (happens sometimes Turdly and Ivan come to mind but thats another story).
If they are both indoor cats,(dont remember specifics) you may want distract arial with nip or food and bring pam down to bond with you or just check things out while keeping an eye out for trouble. If they can be in the same room without going after each other, then you really have nothing to worry about.
As long as each of them can count on you, they might not like each other but will get along. Jack and Kitainy still don't like each other (well Jack has the problem in that account to be honest) but they get along.
If they arent killing each other then you are ahead of the curve. I am happy that it has gone as well this far.

Silleigh,
wher the hell is this operation, one of the things I did learn was how to get macs to talk to printers.
We will be digging into the system folder and looking for the appropriate ppd files for the printer you want to print to. might need to fire up the finder, dig up some ip adress making sure we are actually connected to the printer through the network.
what is the target printer, seriously.
Email me monday morning and lets get you hooked up.

Me, too! Ariel and Jazz lived together for nearly 14 years and never really liked each other. I'd prefer Ariel and Pam became friends, but am happy that so far neither has been caught with a mouthful of the other one's fur.
(I used to hear Ariel scream "Mom! Mom! He's chasing me!" and I'd run to the rescue and find Jazz sitting on the staircase trying to look innocent, with some grey tabby fluff stuck to his lips.)
Maybe I'll try the nip. Ah, kitty pot parties. One of the funniest sights ever.

Yeah, I know, Ted - I'm one too. But culturally, us guys are supposed to love big slobbery hound dogs, and gals are supposed to love cats and little high-strung yippy dogs they can carry around in their purse.
I think that sorta goes along with many guys' need to have animals that are easy to dominate and intimidate, and animals that are an ad banner for the guy's strength and status. Maybe I'm over-analyzing it with that.
On a funny note: one my cats name is 'Eli'.

Eli - Yes, I have! My ex (back when we were still together) brought Why Cats Paint home, and it actually took us a while to figure out it was a goof. They had the artspeak *down,* the Artists Portraits were so deadpan, and the pictures were a riot. (BTW, there really *is* a Museum of Non-Primate Art in Tokyo, mentioned in the book's bibliography.)
I even told our cats that I was going to set them up with easels, canvases and little plates of paint and they could jolly well start earning their keep.
The Dancing with Cats I didn't like as much, maybe because it was more obviously a goof.

The librarian at my grade school named one of her cats after me (yeah, I was up there a lot). I was *very* flattered.
But objectively, it seems like a very strange name for a cat. Hell, I still think it's a strange name for a *person*. But I can't use my middle name, 'cause it's Cadwallader.

I'm tempted (and it'd be Tuesday mornin', I don't work on Mondays 'less it's from home), but I'm not sure this is a circle of Hell you REALLY want to enter, Kent m'dear. You'd be horrified. We keep stickin' the Fiery in the "choose printer" spot and just nothing happens. Plus I am extremely stoopid when it comes to Macs, so it would be like trying to give a 2nd grader instructions through E-mail. I DO thank you for the generous offer, though!

Oh, I adore dogs, too. (Actually, when you get right down to it, I adore nearly every animal on the planet.) It's just that dogs are so high-maintenance compared to cats.
You know the fabled (and, I think, mythic) "biological clock" women are supposed to have that makes us baby-crazy?
I had a terrible case of the dog-crazies a while back. Did all the bio-clock things: oohed and squealed at every friendly dog I saw, bought books of dog stories, burst out sobbing at really cute/wistful doggy pictures and even dog food commercials. Fortunately, I have many friends who own dogs, and was able to go get my doggy-fix any time I wanted.
Now it's passed. Though I still turn to jelly when handed a puppy.

Silleigh,
Honey, you just threw down the gaunlet.
Teusday then. Well, you are going to learn a little more than you intended about computers, but it isn't so scary.
Like I said, I cut my teeth in that shop. Have no fear. If I can talk a guy who had only seen me take the cover off of his computer, through an internal modem installation over the phone, while tuning up a bicyle, send him upstairs to his roomates computer to download drivers and then put them on a floppy and install said drivers and finish the installation, we should
do just fine.
Ill email ya.

Can anyone tell me if this is a good progression, and whether I should let it run its course to what I hope will be friendship, or at least friendly acquaintence?
I wouldn't push it -- let them sort it out on their own terms. You do have to be a little bit careful with two female cats because you can run into dominance problems. My boyfriend's mom had to permanently separate two of her four cats because one of them challenged the other for the dominant position and won.
But a kitty pot party is probably not a bad idea, if you don't force it.
Kent, my tortie's name is Natasha, Tashi for short. The other, male cat is Boris. Got them three years apart, but when I got a female, I couldn't not name her Natasha, could I?

FF definitely warns you about double-posting. The problem is that you can't refresh after posting, or it will warn you about it, and the only thing you can do is close the window and reopen it, if you want to still use the refresh feature.
You can definitely refresh in FF, by clicking 'OK' with an empty comment field.
IE hasn't been properly updated in years. It feels like it, too. Safari on the Mac (and FF/Camino/OmniWeb: lots of good choices) and FF on Windows/Linux.

Eli: Has anyone ever met a cat who tries to stick their nose up one of your nostrils? I *think* it's a sign of affection, and it really is rather cute, but it's... mystifying.
I don't know about the nostril thang, but Curly -- my cat -- likes to gently bite any clothed portion of my body, especially after a good petting. I'm told that's also a sign of cat affection. He's got all kinds of cute quirks, like keeping his mouth partially open anytime he's content (which makes the purring VERY loud -- and he does it on command -- all I have to do is stroke his nose), sticking his tongue out, etc. He loves to drag small objects off of tables, too, like pocket change, papers.

Stinky - sorry for your loss.
One of my 13 year old littermates died suddenly 3 months ago, and the surviving sister was disconsolate.
3 weeks later (who knew?) a new little cat guy joined the fambly. 5 months old. The surviving sister went from disconsolate to royally pissed off.
CaseyL - I did what you did - kept them separate for a while, then gradually let them get introduced. Lots of hissing, snapping and swatting from the older cat; persistence from the younger one.
Occasionally I now find them curled together in the same cat bed. I've even seen them wash each others' faces. They'll even both sit in my lap at the same time.
Of course at this minute there's a lot of hissing and growling going on courtesy of the old cat. Probably because she was reading what I was writing and is determined to prove me a liar.

Stinky, so sorry about your cat. My cat Moe(20 yrs old) is very ill now. I need to let him go but I can't. We are feeding him baby food meat with a syringe 4 times aday, doing kitty dyalisis twice a day.He doesn't seem to be in pain, sleeps 90% of the time. Would it be wrong to take his dreams away? The vet will come to our house and do it.

You all are so kind. Thanks for the words of encouragement. I love my Chico, he has been my best friend for many years.
The thing I hate the most, and what I experienced this with Chico's brother, is the daily "death" watch. Is today the day he lets me know he has had enough? Thankfully, he has been doing well. Heck, I didn't even know he was ill until I took him to the vet for his annual check-up. So, I am guessing he and I will be together for awhile longer, and I am grateful for that.
To all of you with sick animal friends, I extend my own sympathy. Love them while you can, and never tire of being a pet butler.
