What else does the GOP really have but Bigotry? They attack anything that does not absolutely fit into their world view. Race, Religion, Sex, Education, Science and so on.
In some respects, this may be a final lash back as the United States becomes more integrated with the world at large. I stopped thinking of us having a real national identity a long time ago. We are at least one of the head waters to a global identity and I just think these people are unable to accept that not only has the local culture changed but the world is knocking on their doorstep for a social visit.

In the South, sex is truly a primal thing, and by "primal thing" I mean in the old cave man sex of a woman being some kind of territory that a male lays claim upon as his own property, and every male is then seen as a potential threat . . . just like on those wildlife shows where a the male lion or the male sea lion surrounded by his harem of females, is automatically threatened by the presence of another young male and they have to fight it out to see who is going to have mating access to the females.
Now, imagine how much worse this must be for a white man, who is full of self-loathing and insecurity to begin with, and who has derived some sense of identity form the faux superiority he gets by comparing himself to blacks, seeing a good looking white woman choosing a black man over him.

How scary is that?

From watching Matthews pretty regularly, he's all about ratings. But I think his intincts are against the bastards, so he breaks out every now and again, much to the outrage of the dittoheads. For example, the smackdown of the airhead Michelle Malkin was clearly more than he could resist. Then he was back being stupid for the right a day or two after that. (I sense..letters and a lot of them.)

Not that I've ever been "screwed over." But my best friends in the first Gulf War were three black guys and the other white guys avoided me because I was with "them" all the time working out and playing cards and drinking moonshine. Just got back from hanging out with some friends at a bar. A friend of these friends has taken to calling me a Communist after Bush won (he must feel embolded).He also says I'm against unions because he is in a union and voted for Bush--because he's the lesser of two evils. I gave him a little history lesson and he said even though he knew the Dems were for unions, he would never vote for them..If this post seems illogical thus far, it is due to the fact that this kid is amazingly illogical. Eventually, I told him I couldnt talk to him anymore because I didn't want to hate my country. So I come home and read the responses to this joker's 'essay.' Crazy shit. Do mainstream repubs realize when they vote for Bush and Repubs they give credence to these jackasses??

I have a slightly different experience on race. I grew up a white nerd at a mostly-black school Detroit. I was a regular target for verbal abuse, having funny teeth and big ears... but the only times I ever got into a fight were when it was about me -- i.e., whoever it was decided that Tom was a worthy target, not "the white kid".
And then I joined Chess Club, and turned out to be one of the three best players in the school.
For some reason -- I will never know -- chess took off that year, and quite a lot of the kids who used to make fun of me were now getting their clocks cleaned by me on a battlefield where I had all the advantages. And the biggest one was the manners and grace of winning and losing well that the sponsoring teacher of the Club instilled in us, so that we'd finish the game with a handshake and a promise to play again soon. No fist-pumping, no in-your-face, just two kids playing a game, one won, better luck next time.

And he comes home to find that the plant he used to work at got exported to the country he just got back from. And the guy who put the shrapnel in his ass got his old job, 'cause he'll work for fifteen cents a day and no bathroom breaks. Meanwhile he realizes the only reason he was over there in the first place was so we could install a government that would sell us oil at a good price. And of course the oil companies used the skirmish over there to scare up domestic oil prices. A cute little ancillary benefit for them but it ain't helping my buddy at two-fifty a gallon. They're takin' their sweet time bringin' the oil back, and maybe even took the liberty of hiring an alcoholic skipper who likes to drink martinis and fuckin' play slalom with the icebergs, and it ain't too long 'til he hits one, spills the oil and kills all the sea life in the North Atlantic. I just finished watching Platoon again. I'd forgotten just how great a movie it is. Nothing else Stone has done has is in the same league.

See, we can villify them all we want. And we can mock their earnest dupes and hapless sock-puppets and even our figure-"head" president himself. But that last paragraph, above, is how the few people who actually matter wake up thinking every day. And they thrive. They always have. This parasite class arises in every society, there's nothing American about them. They're just succeeding in a way here that they haven't in four generations. We've failed, they've won, and the country will just have to service them. This isn't a matter of ideology. There is no more ideology as a causal agent, it's merely a vehicle now. They don't smoke the crack themselves. They can't afford to. Their terms are our terms. In principle, they agree with us. They just have different priorities.
And why not? If you can use advertising to short-circuit people's thinking, to get them to buy things they don't need with money they don't have, even if it hurts them and their families, what else can you get out of the suckers? If you were born with some capital to play with, or have learned to suck up to it during life, you farm those losers. You raise whole fields of them on ignorance, whole thronging hordes with open mouths and empty heads, and then you scythe them down with the laws you paid for, bind them into sheaves with fear, beat out of them what you need, and leave the chaff to blow away in the wind.
Raise the blind, undifferentiated mob so you can extract thier surplus. You squeeze them as consumers and as employees. You've got 'em coming and going, both sides of the macroeconomic cycle. Pack that surplus away into your own life. Raise your standard of living. Protect what you've stolen, cajoled, defrauded. It's for you, for your family.
You think to yourself, "that's what they're there for. They're losers. What else are they good for?"
Politics, commerce, you'd have to be a fool to distinguish between them. While you're at it, send their kids overseas to steal stuff for your company, and to murder your competitors. Same pitch. Should be easy.

It occured to me the other day that if Bob Dylan was coming up as a new artist today..?

See, what happened was I went off for a detail for the day and during the time, we had gotten another tent in that wasn't a ripped-up dry-rotted raggedy National Guard tent we had taken out there from Louisiana. So all the white guys moved to it but the black guys and my one little cot space was left when I came back. So I come back and what the fuck. I went over to the new state of the art double-lined tents with fly netting all the white guys were lined in like sardines in then walked back to the orignal dry-rotted tent with all its space and said to myself, hey, I'll take this if these three black guys don't mind. They didn't. I loved those guys. We had so much fun and we had some of the most intense card and domino games for almost a year after the war ended while we were waiting to leave that you could possibly imagine. We had this one work-out game of cards where the number you drew was how many pushups you had to do and occasionally we would be able to buy some moonshine from the Vietnamese contractors who made it. It's a wonder we didn't go blind. Anyway, they new I was gay but didn't care. The cutest one even tried to have sex with me once but I acted straight and didn't know what his advances were about.

Some get based on the idea of "this is hot now", and that's what (I think) fuels the short-attention-span people... but the things that we really want, the things we really like or need, become immune to that pretty quickly. Nobody's losing money selling Beatles albums, Julia Child cookbooks, or Bogart movies.
Thing is, it has to be made available. And the current supply, in the case of TV shows, is pretty damn thin.
More than anything, this is why we've got to get back to the Equal Time rules, and to limiting the number of broadcast stations owned by anybody. We've got the equivalent of Baskin-Robbins 3.1 flavors.

my best friend's little bro works as a mechanic for the public transit here, and they went ALL OUT for Kerry--registering voters, driving people to the polls, yard signs...
could be ONE reason why the Repub CHEAT did not work in PA--we were able to out-organize them, and cover the spread. thanks to the Unions.

but my PA county, Allegheny, which contains one of PA's two cities (PGH) registered the MOST problems on E-Day of ANY COUNTY in the entire nation...kudos to my neighbors and the students on my campus, we beat them. it took all day, and people willing to go downtown and plead their case before a judge to prove they were allowed to vote, go wait four hours in line again, but we did it.
in Ohio...the cheaters won.

4. PAY OFF ANY AND ALL CREDIT CARDS. (or at least transfer that debt into credit unions or something else--STOP feeding the beast, and START feeding the Good Guys. your dollar is now your only safe vote. we CAN starve them out, you know.)

(send emails, make contact by phone, do "freeway" blogging--which in my case is more like BUS blogging, but whatever is open to you. there are SO MANY people with no access to the net, who have NO CLUE because all they get is from the telly--if they only KNEW, a lot of them would be with us. HALF the people in the US who could legally vote, did not, or were prevented from doing so.)
6. through January 19th, concentrate your efforts & money on voting reform--this is non-partisan, let's make it FAIR for EVERY one.

The thing that has caused the destruction you cite isn't race, it's prejudice. Prejudice is captial-R Real. Bigotry is Real. Hate is Real.
But those things, at least in these instances, are based on the concept of Race, which isn't Real. That, I think, is the final, insulting tragedy of racial hatred... it's hatred based on pure irrational belief, refusing to look at Reality to see how unfounded and horrific one's actions are.

good post. i saw dr. zhivago for the first time last nite. my new fav. movie, right after apocalypse now. not sure which movie is more pertinent to our times. maybe neither. still, these are ugly times, and people should prepare.
