So, what do we think? Was it Taser or the questionable job Kerik did in Iraq (see TPM for more info on that)?
My vote is Iraq. Taser is to run-of-the-mill, especially in an Administration that is utterly unphased by Halliburton.

"Personal reasons"
Exactly the same reason he gave for bailing on the Baghdad PD.
We suspect these two are related. He or Rove stuck a finger in the wind and realized this was going to be a major sticking point so they decided to head it off before he was asked this under oath at a confirmation hearing.
There's something here. Someone doesn't want him talking about this.

I'm reaching here, and only half-serious. Could it be the Rev. Moon, Messiah of the Beltway, objected because of the Korean love-child? Maybe he didn't like the abandonment part. On the other hand, I don't see what kind of interest Moon would have in the Ministry of Domestic Security. It most likely was the jeebo-fascists in the GOP who are the issue.

It's more than that, it could open up the whole bag of worms about no-bid contracts, conflicts of interest, menages-a-trois, and alcoholism.
Y'know, you say that in jest, but if you think about it...

Sorta off-topic, but every time I read one of these news items, for some weird reason I begin to imagine I smell the burning-hair smell you run into outside of a mall hair salon... still working on the meaning of that.

i suspect that bernie was getting nervous about any confirmation hearings he might be subjected to. if you've noticed, the press coverage (printed anyway) has been less than enthusiastic about his appointment.
and, considering what he's publicly admitted to re his personal behavior, just imagine what's out there just waiting for an enterprising journo to discover.
also, re the comments about rudy/bernie. the new york observer has an article with a couple of choice observations that are quoted here:
"This reflects the clout of Rudy," says Joseph Mercurio, a veteran political consultant. "What I’ve heard is that [the White House] asked Rudy, ‘If you’re not going to take it, who should we pick?’, and he said, ‘Go with Bernie.’"
Mr. Giuliani, after all, seems to have his own sights set a little higher—on the Presidential campaign in 2008—so the appointment of his loyal aide to a cabinet-level position will only help to reinforce the legend of America’s Mayor. As the memory of 9/11 grows more distant, the appointment will keep that symbol alive in the eyes of the nation, because Mr. Kerik’s legacy was also sealed on that fateful day.
And in that logic, some observers see a calculated political move that reeks of ambition. "This was all about Rudy," said one Republican consultant who didn’t want to be named. "He’s too good for the cabinet—Attorney General or Homeland Security, it’s beneath him, because he wants to be President. So what does he do? Put his old chauffeur in the position."

I think Ahnold would be up for the job. Not likely he'd be asked, but it would be a nice intro to Washington and pave the way for a presidential bid. If all the repugs have in '08 is Frist, or some similar piece of shit, why not?

Might be that our very own Eliot Spitzer, AG NY, knows where the bodies are buried re Kerik, which also ties into the TASR thing...
The nanny thing might be a made up thing to Rovify his leave taking to spend more time contemplating his navel.
Remember how we all rejoiced when the dead guy beat Ashcroft and then Ashcroft joined the ranks of the living dead in the Alfredo E. Bush Crime Family?
You know the next one has got to be a doozie. Joementum might be a nice Bush attempt to prove he has a bipartisan pretzel in his body. But seriously, think of who would be the worse choice and that will be our new candidate. Maybe Bush will have rehabilitated Saddam to give him the post!

CNN says he called Bush at 8:30 -sheeyat - is that late enough for ya for a Friday night press release drop. Scottie McClellan on conference call - love it - can't see his pasty sweaty face that way. This must be some seriously bad shit with this guy - think there is any chance the press will go beyond this totally BS nanny story? .. Sigh, I think its time for Atrios or someone to mobilize an army of junior journalists, get some schooling in FOIA requests and the like, otherwise we're in for Friday night drops like this far into the future that go straight down the memory hole never to be seen again.

Heck, Kerik already has at least 6 million bucks from his "investments" he doesn't need much else in life at this point. He can always be Rudy's chief of whatever when Rudy ends up where he is going. The DHS job is a dead end job at any rate, like the ambassador to Poland. Not that there is anything wrong with Poland.

An Israel Air Force missile on Thursday night struck a Qassam rocket workshop in the northern Gaza Strip, hours after an attempt to kill a wanted militant was foiled when the target spotted an IAF drone in the skies above the southern Strip.
Several people were lightly hurt from smoke inhalation and flying debris following the strike on a house in the town of Beit Lahiyah, local residents said.
The house belongs to Mahmoud al-Madhoun, a local leader of the Al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigades, who was unharmed. Residents said they heard unmanned Israeli aircraft overhead.
The IDF confirmed the strike, saying that the target was used to make and store munitions.
Earlier Thursday, the head of the Popular Resistance Committees, Jamal Abu Samhadana, escaped his second IDF assassination attempt in four months. Eyewitnesses said he was driving from Rafah to Khan Yunis when two missiles were fired at his car.
But Abu Samhadana and two aides had noticed an IDF unmanned aerial vehicle nearby - as is standard procedure during military operations in Gaza - and fled their vehicle before the two air-to-surface missiles struck. The three suffered moderate injuries and were taken to a nearby hospital.
After a similar attempt on his life last August, Abu Samhadana said the committees - armed bands set up early in the Intifada - would continue their armed struggle against Israel.
They were established by Palestinian police and security officers belonging to various organizations and have undertaken joint operations with Islamic Jihad and Hamas in the Gaza Strip.
The Abu Samhadana family is known to play a central role in the smuggling operations from Egypt, in road-side bombings and the launching of Qassam rockets.
Abu Samhadana engineered the bomb attacks that destroyed two Merkava tanks near Netzarim in the winter of 2002, incidents in which six IDF soldiers were killed. Israel also connects him to the bomb attack on an American convoy south of the Erez Crossing in October 2003 in which three U.S. security guards were killed.
The PRC vowed "painful and earthquake-like" revenge attacks.
"It was a cowardly assassination attempt... but they have survived," said Abu Abeer, a spokesman for the PRC.
Palestinian Cabinet Minister Saeb Erekat condemned the strike, saying that, the "continuation of assassination attempts" undermines efforts to revive peace talks.

I couldn't agree more about scumbag Lieberman. So he supports action against Arabs, that's because as a Jew, he (understandably) supports the Israelis. Big deal. He totally sold out, just to try and become VP
Lieberman is the very worst of choices.
If picked, he would agree with Bush on keeping the immigration floodgates open to the invading third world armies.

I don't think there's a danger from the Freepers coming over. They don't really monitor links the way Chuckie the Clown at LGF does.
It's worth reading sometimes. They outed McGreevey in 2002.
For what it is worth...I like Kerik but last Sunday at the Jets game one of the guy's who tailgates with us brought his buddy, who works for the NYPD at One Police Plaza.
This guy is very conservative; I told him of how we protested against the libs during the RNC and he wished we had beat the crap out of them, he hates them and what they stand for so much. Worked 18-hours a day processing libs criminals that week.
Would you want this guy as head of homeland security?

I grew up in northeast Queens, and knew at least four guys who wanted to become cops just so they could beat up on black people.
Oh well. there are no liberal paradises.

franks may be barred because of limitations on numbers of years out of the service. Anyone know how this works?
Thersites
I know that applies to SecDef, but I'm not sure about HS. In fact, I kinda doubt there's any sort of limitation, because the position was created under ChimpCo, and I just don't see Rove limiting executive powers--such as Cabinet appointments--in any way.

I've known two women from that area of Queens, one from Fresh Meadows and one from Bayside, one Jewish and one Irish Catholic.
They were both from incredibly right-wing, abusive families and they both had serious macho dicks as fathers.
One's father was actually a cop. Both of them tended to date physically abusive men.

Eh, what's it really do that Kerik is gone. As someone said upthread, whoever''ll be nominated in his place will be just as bad. As Stephen Colbert said the other night, to survive in this administration, it's not enough to be a failure; you need to be a colossal failure.

On Friday night, Kerik abruptly informed the White House that we was withdrawing from the nominating process, citing potential problems with the immigration and tax status of a former nanny. “I am convinced that, for personal reasons, moving forward would not be in the best interests of your administration, the Department of Homeland Security or the American people,” Kerik said in a letter to President Bush.
But there may have been other issues at play. Kerik, who recently made millions in the private sector, once filed for personal bankruptcy as a New York cop. And just five years ago he was in financial trouble over a condominium he owned in New Jersey. More serious trouble than anyone realized: NEWSWEEK has discovered that a New Jersey judge in 1998 had issued an arrest warrant as part of a convoluted series of lawsuits relating to unpaid bills on his condo. The magazine faxed documents, including the arrest warrant, over to the White House around 6:00 p.m. Friday, asking for comment. Neither Kerik nor the White House had any immediate response. At 8:30 p.m., Kerik had submitted his letter to the president.
Guliani has some explaining to do to Bush.

On so many levels, wow!
First, how many skeletons can one guy have in his closet?!
Second, that's nice. The power of a fax machine. And having the WH fax number.
Third, it's *shocking* to see any part of the press actually doing its fucking job! Here's a salute to real investigative journalism! (Sounds like they really had to dig a bit. Good on them.)
Fourth, they say "documents, including the arrest warrant..." Do you think that means the docs all concerned the same topic? Or are there even more goodies to come?
Man, they had some brass ones for even thinking of nominating this guy.

A subtle but consistant qualification for joining this administration--especially in the second term--is the total, unhesitant willingness to kiss Bush's ass, to shove your tongue right up there.

Kerik says he didn't pay taxes on a housekeeper/nanny who was an illegal immigrant. How positively Clinton-era!
His withdrawal couldn't possibly have anything to do with the fact that he was completely unqualified for the job could it? Oh, wait. That's not a disqualification. Rumsfeld still has a job.

Shit, most of the crap on Kerik is easily accessed on LexisNexis. The arrest warrent bullshit is part of the public record. How hard did they have to dig for that? I found it in minutes.
The nanny bit is just an attempt to divert the attention away from Kerik's REAL problems, like sexual harassment, covering up crimes while a police commissioner, and stealing money from widows and orphans. I'm reeealll-eee curious about what they've found out about his tenure in Iraq.
And ya know, the fatass Dems were just going to let this one go through, thinking he'd be 'fine' as HS chief. Not worth the battle, and all that.

Tommy Franks will fit right in with this criminal bunch:
"What is the worst thing that can happen in our country?" Franks asked rhetorically. "Two steps. The first step would be a nexus between weapons of mass destruction . . . and terrorism." The second step would be "the western world, the free world, loses what it cherishes most, and that is freedom and liberty we've seen for a couple of hundred years in this grand experiment that we call democracy."
Franks suggested that a "massive casualty-producing event" might cause "our population to question our own Constitution and begin to militarize our country."

Now we can turn our attention to Alberto Gonzales or Rice or Rumsfeld.
Also, I was bemused to read all sorts of articles this last week about how Bush is fine-tuning his domestic policy team because his domestic policy has been sort of weak and all over the place for four years, and he needs a clear domestic policy to railroad his changes on Social Security through.
None of them mention the fact that his domestic policy advisor(presumably partly responsible for this waffling policy the last few years) has been promoted to Sec. of Education.

Illegal nannie? illegal houseworker? "Personal reasons"? What does it mean when there are too many explanations? Shakespeare's villains always have MORE explanations for their evil than they can comfortably reconcile.
So here's another for Kerik--or rather for Bush to want Kerik to find a "personal" reason or two (or three or four):
"How come ya bugged out of Iraq after only 3 months, when everything was blowing up? Did you jump or was you pushed?"
--That question, or some version thereof, was going to be asked during his confirmation hearing, perhaps repeatedly. Maybe not the most uncomfortable thing in his personal dark closet, an overstuffed one by all accounts. But not an issue the chimp wanted dwelt upon at great length, considering the position the guy had in Iraq, and the one he was up for here.
Real question, of course, is why Kerik in the first place? Rudy calling in a chit, as many have speculated? If so, I'm guessing Rudy's chit has been paid off and more. No more favors for you, paisan.

If they try to run with Franks, Dems need to crucify him on values.
From Wiki.
"Tommy Franks left his position as Vice Chairman of Enron Energy Services in 2001, shortly before the company filed for bankrupcy. This information was on the army web site but was removed after the eruption of the infamous enron scandal."
Doug McDaniel: "When the wealthy elitists cry “class warfare!” your reply should be a resounding “yes, it is, and we are tired of wealthy individuals and corporations declaring war on our schools, our families, our small businesses, and our values! Yes, it is war!”

What bugs me about the AP story I read is how it utterly glosses over what a "nanny problem" really is - the American upper class' why of acquiring third country nationals, or TCNs.
You don't hear about TCNs much in America, but they're a regular feature in the rest of the world - permanant immigrants with few to none of the rights of the host country's citizenship. Hence, the Turks in Germany will forever be Turk, same as the Phillipinos in Saudi Arabia and, these days, the Guatamalans in America.
The rationale of the upper class is this: these aren't servant, they're guests, enjoying the benefits of democracy; they don't work for us, they offer to help out with chores out of gratitude, but it's not work, they don't get paid. The reality of it is that the "host" usually holds the "guest" passport and very often bars the "guest" from going out in public. When the "guest" complains about not receiving whatever pay they were promised, the "host" will sometimes pull a bit of jewelry from her box and "give" it in lieu of pay.
The single reason why American doesn't have TCN's is what we used to call The American Dream - the idea that anyone from anywhere can come to America and with hard work build a new life. That, friends, is precisely what makes America great, and without it, we are no longer America....
However, let's not be fooled... the American ruling class would much prefer the American worker would just go away... They don't believe in us and they don't want to pay for us...
Anybody who plays with TCNs in this country is an enemy of freedom.
What bugs me about the AP story I read is how it utterly glosses over what a "nanny problem" really is - the American upper class' why of acquiring third country nationals, or TCNs.

And this is the guy who, with many others of his kind, was frequently seen attacking the (hopeless) Kerry campaign on TV. WTF were those highly paid campaign consultants doing after all?

Kerique should be given credit, non? This time, unlike when he was in Corea, he has finally learned when to pulls out.

The local paper is suggesting this has to do with nannygate sh*t. Like he hired a couple Korean maids to service his hummer and he paid them according to Neal Bush's scale.

many white supremists (an orwellian phrase if ever i've heard one) keep slaves. They think it's ok and plan to bring it back full time into the labor force. However, for now, many "elite" keep domestic slaves. Kerik's got a lot more dirt than that on him, though.

According to PIA above
Kerik is on the board of
TASER
COGNOS
STROHL SYSTEMS
ENTERGY
PURDUE
NEXTEL
My guesses on why Kerik left Iraq
are because his "sales" call was over to the ministries of police purchasing...
or
...he was using the Iraqi police to test the lastest and greatest UltraTaser on prisoners and the experiment went bad....
