I'MMA LET YOU FINISH

GravatarThe very definition of lying partisan hack.

I don’t understand how anyone on the left can accord any respect whatsoever to David Brooks. His column today is an all too typical passel of lies and distortions about Social Security “reform”, although we should all get used to them because we’re going to hear them repeated constantly for the next couple of years. It starts with the frist paragraph, where Bobo, who has made a dubious career out of dividing us into invented red/blue stereotypes, does it again:
People who instinctively trust the markets support the Bush reform ideas, and people who are suspicious oppose them.

It gets worse from there. As usual these days, it’s less about how this “reform” would work or why it is deemed necessary, than to mis-characterize and dismiss Democratic opposition to it as “conspiracyism,” with a gratuitous reference to Michael Moore thrown in for pure hackitude. If you want a preview of the right-wing lie machine in action on SS, this has all the tropes.

On a side note, Brooks also makes two remarkable statements, one could be taken as a new aphorism for the Bushists:

...corruption is the price we pay for economic freedom...

and the other is probably the closest thing to truth in the entire article:

I may be a complete idiot...

GravatarBoth Bobo and Paul Krugman have written columns on Social Security in the past coupld of days.

Krugman, an economist that teaches at Princeton. Bobo is a nothing that does nothing.

Comparing the columns, Kruggie cites facts in his determination that the program is not in dire straits. Booboo
spouts bullshit such as "corruption is the price..."

BooBoo is considered by many to be the more factual of the two. I think I am having a lysergic acid diethylamide flashback.

Toy Turndown

Tuesday, December 7, 2004

Last year, Teasers adult night club in Statesville may have saved Christmas for hundreds of needy children in public housing.

Things are different this year. Jeff Bustle, owner of the club, says he’s been told by the Statesville Housing Authority that gifts collected at his business aren’t welcome.

“It’s really sad,” said Bustle, who has participated in toy drives for the past 14 years.

David Meachem, executive director of the housing authority, said he decided to reject the toys because of the criticism he received last year for accepting the donation....

Opponents of gay marriage said the divorces, occurring so soon after the weddings, confirm that gay couples are not equipped for marriage.

And what does Britney Spears' 2 day marriage confirm about hetrosexuals?

GravatarMeanwhile elsewhere in the NYT, this striking passage from the david Brudnoy obit:

To many, Mr. Brudnoy, a self-described libertarian whose conservative perspective could be heard weekly for nearly 20 years in 38 states and Canada, had become a symbol of graceful resilience. In 1994, after collapsing and nearly dying of viral pneumonia, Mr. Brudnoy revealed publicly for the first time that he had AIDS and was gay.

"It was the only time I ever saw him afraid," said Jon Keller, a friend of Mr. Brudnoy's and a former producer of his show. "He was afraid that the exposure of his homosexuality might damage his career. He asked me, 'Do you think they'll still love me if they know I'm gay?' "

GravatarYou know, I think Bobo is right saying that those who implicitly trust the markets believe SS reform Bush's way is a good thing.

The two kind of people who trust the markets implicitly are:

1. The Wall Street fatcats who CONTROL the markets and make all of their money off of gaming the markets.

2. Stupid, gullible people who would believe anything said by Bobo/Rush/GWB.

The Stock Market is the blue blood version of OTB. The only way to win is not to play.

GravatarIdon't deny that many business and Wall Street types would like to capture the system for their own benefit.

Goddamn straight, Davey.

"The market" is really gonna shed a lot of tears when they invest Grandma's money companies like Enron and she's stuck eating catfood for the rest of her life.

People who "trust the market" to set them up for retirement either have a helluva lot of money and not much to lose, or they think Jesus is coming next week and they're not going to need to worry about things like trying to survive old age.

GravatarThe outline of the problem is clear. When the Social Security program was created, there were 42 workers for each retiree. Now there are about three workers per retiree, and in 2030 there will be two.

Okay, does this Davey stat stink to anyone else? From 1946-1964, we had the highest birth rate in the nation. We now have a larger workforce, and more women working than at any time in our history. How did we decline so rapidly from 42 workers per retiree to just three??

Granted, people live longer now and there are more people who actually live to draw their Soc. Sec. But going from 42 workers to just three seems way, way fucking off...

GravatarDavid Brooks is a brown hyena.
The brown hyena is perhaps the biggest mammal that makes most of its living off scavenging -- a rarity among land-bound life forms larger than insects. Even more surprisingly, it manages to make a living this way in an arid habitat without great herds of herbivores, where carcasses must be few and far between. It's easy to see why its range is now so limited; harder to see how it evolved in the first place. Perhaps it was not always as dependent upon carrion as it is now.

GravatarI hardly ever read Bobo's Bullshit--but I felt masochistic this AM.

"Historic returns" of 4.6 percent--my ass...and what happens if the stock market tanks when I turn 68 or whenever the hell I can retire and my "historic returns" are more like huge loss. I know the Republican response--too bad, you lose--eat dog food and die (decrease the surplus population.)

But even more annoying--what's this shit that Pelosi apparently said about entering into negotiations without any preconditions (or something like that)?!! Now she's running up the white flag in advance of this major assault on the safety net? It's bad enough we can't count on any red state senator to be faithful to Social Security. Et tu Pelosi?

GravatarOh, OK, I got my answer about where Davey gets his stats - places like the National Centre for Policy Analysis Web site:

The NCPA's goal is to develop and promote private alternatives to government regulation and control, solving problems by relying on the strength of the competitive, entrepreneurial private sector. Topics include reforms in health care, taxes, Social Security, welfare, criminal justice, education and environmental regulation.

I also saw this same drivel was repeated on other web sites, like conservativetruth.org

GravatarMeanwhile, back in the USSR:

In an apparent reversal of decades of U.S. practice, recent federal Office of Foreign Assets Control regulations bar American companies from publishing works by dissident writers in countries under sanction unless they first obtain U.S. government approval.

The restriction, condemned by critics as a violation of the First Amendment, means that books and other works banned by some totalitarian regimes cannot be published freely in the United States.

"It strikes me as very odd," said Douglas Kmiec, a constitutional law professor at Pepperdine University and former constitutional legal counsel to former presidents Reagan and Bush. "I think the government has an uphill struggle to justify this constitutionally."

Several groups, led by the PEN American Center and including Arcade Publishing, have filed suit in U.S. District Court in New York seeking to overturn the regulations, which cover writers in Iran, Sudan, Cuba, North Korea and, until recently, Iraq.

Violations carry severe reprisals -- publishing houses can be fined $1 million and individual violators face up to 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine.

"Historically, the United States has served as a megaphone for dissidents from other countries," said Ed Davis of New York, a lawyer leading the PEN legal challenge. "Now we're not able to hear from dissidents."

Yet more than dissident voices are affected.

The regulations already have led publishers to scrap plans for volumes on Cuban architecture and birds, and publishers complain that the rules threaten the intellectual breadth and independence of academic journals.

Shirin Ebadi, the 2003 Nobel Peace Prize winner, has joined the lawsuit, arguing that the rules preclude American publishers from helping craft her memoirs of surviving Iran's Islamic revolution and her efforts to defend human rights in Iranian courts.

In a further wrinkle, even if publishers obtain a license for a book -- something they are loathe to do -- they believe the regulations bar them from advertising it, forcing readers to find the dissident works on their own.

"It's absolutely against the First Amendment," fumed Arcade editor Richard Seaver, who hopes to publish an anthology of Iranian short stories. "We're not going to ask permission (to publish). That reeks of censorship."

My spouse is self-employed and was encouraged by our CPA to invest in a Roth back in 97 or 98. The fund was very reputable, run by an old money New York family, and touted to be a great long-term investment - very solid, very stable.

Well, it's now worth $500 less than when it was purchased seven years ago.

Our matress literally would have given us a far better return on that money.

I thought they must be wrong because the news/the doctors he consulted in the west were talking about viruses et al and it seemed like dioxin would be easy to detect. But apparently not!

Gravatarand I don't think you can clear dioxins out of a body. It goes into the fatty tissues and stays there. You'd have to probably soak a body in choroform to get it out. I wonder how it was administered? I'll bet the CIA has its ears perked up to that.

GravatarJunior's starting his PR blitz (guess right before the holidays is a good time to roll out a new product) about the "grave and gathering" and imminent threat a bankrupt SS sytem poses to our children and grandchildren. We can't wait to act until the threat results in the form of a mushroom cloud of bounced SS checks. These guys are so predictable....same codewords, same bs they spouted with their PR blitz for Iraq War. I am sure the media is fooled by this blitz.

I just want to know just who they will use this time to hold up a vile of rubber SS checks in front of the committee that will give authority for Junior's case for the need to Destroy Social Security in order to Save it presentation. Perhaps they will recruit the Dicken's character, the Ghost of Christmas Future to do the work.

The article citing Junior's radio address on this matter is short and sweet. It is something anyone who followed the roll out for the Iraq War could easily have predicted and written. Just wonder what other domestic axis of evil Dubya will be citing in his SOTU speech this year, Social Security, Employer sponsored Health Care, and Middle Class?

Best part of the article is the crap about can't leave our children and grandchildren with a bankrupt SS system? Really Junior like you give a damn. I guess it is okay to saddle them with financing trillions of dollars of government debt....effing Idiot.

Sorry for the rant...I really do despise the media and our pReznit. Bill Moyers had it right when he said,
"I'm going out telling the story that I think is the biggest story of our time: how the right-wing media has become a partisan propaganda arm of the Republican National Committee. We have an ideological press that's interested in the election of Republicans, and a mainstream press that's interested in the bottom line. Therefore, we don't have a vigilant, independent press whose interest is the American people." ( Moyer's quote found thanks to Maru over at WTF is is Now)

GravatarDavid E - thanks for posting about Brudnoy's passing. I've never been to Boston but enjoyed listening to him when he wasn't talking about politics. Sorry to hear of his passing, although I had read a few days ago that he was gravely ill.

GravatarA Call to Action - Help the Innocent Iraqi Civilians who have been caught in the crossfire

They aren't just 'collateral damage'. They are real humans, and they need our help. If this isn't our responsibility, then who's is it?

Well, as we know, lots.

GravatarHow does a fucking cop like Kerik end up with stock options worth 6.2 million without sucking some serious cock? Nanny problems my ass.

Gravatar"To many, Mr. Brudnoy, a self-described libertarian whose conservative perspective could be heard weekly for nearly 20 years in 38 states and Canada, had become a symbol of graceful resilience."

I was not a fan. I remember him as a race-baiting, fag-bashing (long as it wasn't HIS friends) windbag. An example of the kind of formerly fashionable casual racism which infected the white gay population in the seventies and a stalking horse of the decline of fairness on talk radio. I don't think that Jay Severin's career is entirely unrelated to DB's.
Whilet there are no kind people the world would be better off without there are many smart people who we can spare.

I will never understand why we are supposed to lie about someone just because they get sick and die. He certainly wasn't very nice to other people who got sick and died of AIDS.

Listen, people, all of you. We are all going to die. It isn't something that just happens to the good. It is an insult to the truth to make believe otherwise.
