People are fairly large objects. Running over stuff happens only when you are driving a civilian tank and this is why people buy these gas guzzlers: so they can run over all and sundry objects.

Let me guess - if she had thrown herself into the path of an Amtrak train, you would want the railroad indicted for war crimes.

There was nothing to charge this driver with, unless he was drunk. Sometimes people do stupid things and it gets them hit by cars. It isn't always an instant manslaugher charge for the driver. Actually, it very rarely is.

I really Atrios's readers aren't real big on personal responsibility, but I find it fascinating that not one poster here has bothered to mention that the woman shouldn't have been, you know, lying on a ramp in a parking garage.

It is pretty much general knowledge that well connected people (=$$$) do seem to get some special treatment when it comes to certain types of situations and this situation could possibly one of those times.

Reminds me that NYT used to carp about "insestuous politics of Arkansas", ignoring the bizarro show of their home town and home state.
Honorary police badge for offering ones body so the police commissioner can unwind and relax in the middle of his taxing duties -- this is a fresh touch.

If you run over something that you cannot see from the driver seat of your vehicle it is because you are not paying attention or operating an unsafe vehicle--yes, if you cannot see the road in front of you from your driver seat that is an unsafe vehicle. No one is saying this was intentional, but a regular person without connection would have had some consequences.

It's not hard to charge manslaughter in "freak accidents" when someone is negligent. I don't know why this case would be any harder to prosecute than any other in which someone is unintentionally killed by a driver--except that he had a buddy heading up the police force.
