Imagine a press that follows in the tradition of H.L. Mencken, and doesn't just pay lip service to the ghost of Edward R. Murrow?

Sorry. I don't have that much imagination left.

Access to the Internet and BBC World Service on the radio are sometimes the only things that keep me sane.

Sometimes I remember Bush's run in with the British reporter in Ireland. I like to imagine what a U.S. press corps of similar attitude could do to American politics.

It's a lovely dream.....

GravatarConsidering the ridiculous things they hit Kerry with, you can only come to one conclusion. Kerry was a relatively clean politician. Surely any skeletons would have come out by now.

Kerry can get my vote in 2008 if he uses his Senate seat to try to block some of the extreme right agenda Bush is going to be pushing, if he's a loud, forcefull voice for the opposition.

Otherwise, I'd rather see somebody else get a shot.

But still, the more I think about Kerry (in spite of some of his obvious dirty campaigning against Dean) the more I think he was a fundamentally decent politician who got slimed. And it makes me angry (especially when dirtbags like Kerik and Rudy have gotten rich off 9/11).

GravatarAs JMM says, we need to become the party of the opposition. We need to mock mercilessly, point out every flaw and foible(?) and generally make sure that the sheer incompetence and hypocrisy of BushCo is spotlighted and amplified every day.

Mockery and indignation are two valuable tools that the GOP used well in the past decade. It's time we learned how to use them again.

The media *loves* drama. Let's give them some.

GravatarNot just during the campaign. The New York Times has a lot to answer for regarding Kerik. Where was it when Kerik was named Police Commissioner and later when he was lionized after 9/11? I wonder if anyone at the Times is asking this question of themselves.

GravatarKerry was a relatively clean politician.

He's positively squeaky compared to the scum in the White House. How many ex-felons did Bush hire in his first term?

Think about it, they found nothing...no affairs, no quid pro quo, no corruption, no insider trader. He was raised well. Kerry is a good man, a real man, unlike this boy in office right now. It's absolutely disgusting that the media let that petulant asshole and his bottomfeeding capos get away with all of their smears.

There was a lot, I think, but it was mostly for the left's internal consumption. Which isn't bad in itself, but it doesn't necessarily peel voters from Bush or even get swing voters.

Exactly. I try not to think about it too much so I don't get too angry.

Kerry was an annoying bore at times but I'm sure he would have earnestly tried to do a decent job of public service in ofice.

And what he did get slimed for (his anti-war activism) as the most courageous thing he did in his life.

I hate this country sometimes. I really do.

GravatarConsider this insanity. But I made a bet today with a co-worker. Bet one is that Bush will be impeached before the end of his second term. Bet two is the instigator will be a Republican.

I noted this morning that Duncan's post on the trashing of Rumsfeld cheered me up a bit. In one respect it was an indication that the machine is still one of politics. The president and his closest people may have a vision, but the bulk of the Republican politicians just want to stay in office. They bend like grass in the wind.

While we are lambasting the press and media, again, I keep seeing bad news make it through. The analysis suffers, but there is little to be pieced apart in situations such as the Rumsfeld takedown by that lonely soldier. Attempts to discredit the soldier pretty much petered out quickly. Meanwhile you can see the effect with cargo aircraft doing the heavy moving now and the land based vehicles being spared the dangerous treks. (not sure all of the details as yet myself).

Kerik is a definite crack in the levy for Bush. It has brought Guiliani under scrutiny and that commentary is making it on the news.

Again, not perfect, but not the absolute lock down on real information. Bush and crew are not agile at deflecting this sort of thing.

Now the question is why did the lone soldier get the message out on the news and the reality of social security is not.

GravatarDefinitely we should go on the offensive. Hentoff has an article in the current Village Voice about how the Dems are planning NOT to oppose Gonzalez. Stupid, stupid, stupid. Kerik went down - it's a sign of weakness and an opportunity. The republicans wouldn't hesitate to destroy Gonzalez, we shouldn't either.

Gravatarhuh? there was no mockery in the last campaign? what planet do you live on?

OK - Give me one example of Kerry or Edwards getting in a solid indignant jab at Junior. Just one.

If they occurred they were rare.

The mockery was at the grass roots, not at the top levels.

Bush uses humor to jab all the time... even when he's wrong. Do you remember; "Do you wanna buy some wood?"

Most people who saw that likely believed Junior did NOT own a lumber company as Kerry had just accused.

The leaders of our party need to scoff publicly... Roll their eyes... Laugh audibly... whenever the opportunity arises.

As I said. The media loves drama.

it's never the issue that gets you into trouble, it's the cover up and DKos hit it real early on the nail ... there was no nanny, so why were they using this as a screen?

what are they really covering up about kerik and who knows the details? rudi will fall on the sword, but let's get the fringe players to speak on the matter

GravatarSWR,
I figured the Torch was ironic. But some fire is needed. We aren't going to make the hard core of the Republicans like us, so why not try to get a left-center candidate with some fire?
My worry about Clark is that he could be portrayed as someone who has not ever won an election at the state level, knows nothing about governance, etc. He'd probably be as good a president as we might hope for, given his intelligence, but electibility? I'm not sure.

Gravatarthere are huge cracks in the armor to exploit if somebody wants to step into the breech

I see three wings of the Party, the nearly extinct Rockefellers (Chafee, Snowe, et al.), the Sun Belters (McCain, Arnold, et al.) and the Fundies (everyone else).

A smart group of Democrats working behind the scenes could destroy the Republican majority in a few years by exploiting these cleavages and gaining a lock on the Hispanic vote in the process.

GravatarI tend to think that Clark is too open to the charge that he is an amateur. He should run for the Senate or the House first. He'd be an asset there and build credentials.
Don't make too much of Clark's being a liberal general. In the American mind, liberal and general do not mix. He will get smeared for being a liberal and someone will start finding things about his military career that get spun awfully.

Stupid, really stupid question.

Why isn't Texas a blue state? It's got 4 giant cities, a real economy, and a huge hispanic population.

If you're just looking at the numbers, it seems closer to New York or California then it does to Oklahoma or Mississippi.

Why is it so reliably wingnutty?

GravatarSWR

That is a good question. However, looking at the district by district in San Antonio, you can see the red versus blue not so much in ethnicity, but in income. It seems when the income level rises here, the trend heads sharply red.

That is a good question. However, looking at the district by district in San Antonio, you can see the red versus blue not so much in ethnicity, but in income. It seems when the income level rises here, the trend heads sharply red.

Gravatar Why isn't Texas a blue state? It's got 4 giant cities, a real economy, and a huge hispanic population.

If you're just looking at the numbers, it seems closer to New York or California then it does to Oklahoma or Mississippi.

Why is it so reliably wingnutty?

not being a veteran of texas politics - just an outside observer - it all appears to break at the local level where the jigsaw congressional boundaries seem to reinforce a rethug majority in most every instance

New Jersey's as gerrymandered as Texas. It's got more Republican congress people than Democratic and yet it went for Kerry and Gore. People just vote the incumbent locally and "the man" for President.

So I don't think Gerrymandering can explain it.

Somebody (a Texas native) once told me that if you really want to understand Texas, ask only one question.

Why is Dallas the only major city in America without a real university?

That and the Kansas factor mentioned in the recommended book above probably both account for the right-leaning tendancies of Texas, my snippy comment above aside.

Delay and his cronies have ensured that Texas will remain red for a long time.

Gravatarposting from another thread. because i think this is the issue. could be wrong. don't think so.

i understand konopelli. and sympathize.

he is on a rant because he is finally recognizing that there is no organized, politically-entitled opposition party to fascism.

in this country, you can vote for fascists labelled as republicans. or fascists labelled as democrats.

but what you cannot do is vote for any organized political party that is anti-fascist.

recognizing this reality should make more of you than konopelli go bonkers.

anti-fascism, anti-statism, anti-totalitarianism - call it what you will - has no political stature in the USA.

during my lifetime, i have learned concretely how the nazis cowed the german populace in the 1930's.

some have tried to assert that it cannot happen here. hah! happened here. decades ago. and it was the camelot democrat that heralded the imposition of fascism...his call to surrender to the state is well known...

ask not what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country.

some have cared to view this as an ennobling call, i have always viewed it as a call similar to those vocalized by ah.

can we recreate the white rose society? unlikely. can we monkeywrench the modern totalitarian state? unlikely.

so, how is it going to go down? much like orwell envisioned it. think of stalinist russia with a few more consumer amenities[for the immediate future only].

we have gone beyond the point of no return, you know. no matter how much you might wish for a reversal of the slide down the razor blade of the end of a democratic republic, you cannot make it happen. there are not enough anti-fascists. the laws inhibiting anti-fascist political parties are too well entrenched. and tony scalia and clarence thomas are the law.

ayn rand wrote about this problem of fascism in amerika decades ago. the book was entitled atlas shrugged. the thesis was that those that vivified the country went on strike in opposition to the totalitarians.

any of you got the balls to run a general strike?

or to do what rand's vivifiers did, abandon the country and let it devolve faster into the morass that it is destined to become.

GravatarWhy is Dallas the only major city in America without a real university?

Um... I don't know what you call a real university, but Dallas does have my mother's alma mater, Southern Methodist University. It has about 6K students, but it is a real university.

There's also the University of Dallas, a Catholic university that has about 1200.

And then there's the University of Texas at Dallas, with about 14K students. It became a four year college about 15 years ago, but it's still a university, too.

Not necessarily better but they are genuine research universities and SMU's more of a rich man's undergrad school.

Anyway, I don't want to insult Texas, but was just trying to make a point about the fact that Dallas is perhaps an urban sprawl more like suburbia than a city like New York.

The one real university in Texas is in Austin, which is, guess what, the only liberal city in Texas.

GravatarSMU is the USC of Texas.

and we all know what USC stands for,

university for spoiled children.

SMU is a party school. and a greek school.

the only part of SMU that might be intellectually challenging would be the perkins school of theology.

but methodists as deep theological thinkers - not hardly.

so, if you fail to get my point, think of it this way...

smu is to intellectual pursuits as the military is to music[or intelligence].

GravatarBut it is insulting to imply that we don't have "real" universities here based on a rather narrow criteria.

But if that's the gauge...

UT Dallas is a research university--and has been even longer than it was a four-year U.

UTSA has a research hospital here in San Antonio, a city I far prefer to Austin, which has become hopelessly yuppified. By my standards, anyway.

A&M also does extensive research, in a variety of fields. Would I send my kid there? I'd be reluctant to do it, but I would. Their ag and veterinary schools are top-notch, and where a LOT of interesting work has been done in both fields.

SMU's Law school is actually rather good. The undergrad program isn't just for the rich. My grandparents were dirt poor, and my mother went there.

I'll let you tell my mother her education at SMU wasn't worthwhile, that it wasn't challenging. It's also not a rich person's school. A lot do go there, but saying that is like saying Harvard is nothing more than a rich kid's school. Lots of rich kids go there, right? I mean BUSH did.

When I lived in Dallas, I knew lots of ordinary people who went to SMU at night. It's a college, like any other. It has its good points and bad points.

But you misunderstood my point. Amherst or Swarthmore are places where you can get a good education, but neither is a major university that will affect the culture of a surrounding city.

I wasn't saying SMU was a bad school, just that it's not big enough or important enough to turn a Dallas into a New York or a Boston.

Second: You realize, of course, that Allen Boyd has no published, easily accessible position on SS. There's not a button on his web site that will lead you there.

I hate that, especially, about these morons. My own congressman, red republican, just dodges this one no matter what you do he will not take a position. I'm trying a new tack with him starting this weekend.

Nail him. That has to happen.

And then, I'm writing endless, over and over again until published Letters to the Editor on the issue. I'm planning on emphasizing responsibility to older family members left behind.

GravatarTELL YOUR MOTHER THIS,

she got a sheepdip diploma.

SMU is a joke college. always was. always will be.

it was designed for those that couldn't go elsewhere. very lax admissions policy.

my sister went there. only place that would have her. and when she didn't want to do it greek style, she left. because there is no life at that u unless you are greeking it.

now, this is not to say that you cannot get a tertiary education at smu. you probably can. but it is not the primary motive of the school. the primary motive is to take parental funds and shelter their children for 4 years.

by the way, years ago i surmounted the academic summits. i attended harvard, mit.

perhaps i was too intelligent. but i thought that both of those acmes of academia were jokes.

my experiences caused me to conclude that college was designed to keep vast numbers of the populace out of the workforce. so as to make employment numbers look good.

by and large, college is a vacation.

but college is an industry. sucking up tons of bucks and parading itself as an indispensable feature if one wants to become a member of the establishment.

something to consider, how many federal bucks go into the colleges? how does the college racket work? HOW MANY TAX DOLLARS ARE USED TO SUPPORT THE ILLUSION OF A COLLEGE DEGREE?

Very funny. I don't own a "burger joint" BTW, I own a Harley shop.

And the people who work for me make money when I make money, e.g. through sales. But then you wouldn't know what that is because you, being a birkenstock liberal, expect the government to hand you everything on a silver platter.

Very funny. I don't own a "burger joint" BTW, I own a Harley shop.

And the people who work for me make money when I make money, e.g. through sales. But then you wouldn't know what that is because you, being a birkenstock liberal, expect the government to hand you everything on a silver platter.

Who among us hasn't cheated on his wife/mistress, overseen crooked deals, borrowed an apartment from a mob-connected friend guilty of manslaughter for carnal experience, cheated the taxpayers, and shilled for the most inept president in history, all while not having a nanny"

Not Bill Clinton. Chelsea raised herself.

GravatarHitlery didn't dare hire a nanny for Chelsea, even somebody in her eighties - not with Bubba around. There's nothin' that boy won't touch. But since Hitlery has no maternal instincts, that left Chelsea to raise herself pretty much - no nanny 'cuz Hitlery didn't want 'em suckin' on Bubba's crooked dick, daddy out chasin' skirt and drugs with his bro, Roger-the-convict, and momma out stealin', cheatin', orderin' hits on political enemies and those who knew the truth about their corruptions, and fraudin' the elections.

Gravatarkitty is a pussy.

Why would the press pay any attention to Kerik? They thought he was just Bush's personal enforcer.

GravatarWhy would the press pay any attention to Kerik?

Looks like this is becoming a very tiny little spark for the press, at least foreign outlets like the BBC and the ABC. I think I even heard a 'list' of suspect charges against Kerik today on NPR.

I read some comments here the other day about 'Taking out Gulianni and clearing the way for Jeb.'
The whole scenario stinks of Rovian intentions.

GravatarI am always thankful when the deserving get what's coming to them.
Judith Regan, the blue state addressee with the red state libido, is the latest, a Republican of low-life literary goals victimized by a perfumed double cross.

I may ask her if she wants me to do the book.

GravatarYou mean, imagine a press that is actually free and independent and does its job?

Imagine a press that follows in the tradition of H.L. Mencken, and doesn't just pay lip service to the ghost of Edward R. Murrow?

The worst part is that Dowd is on "our side." I mean, she's really just on her own side, but she clearly favors the Democrats over the Republicans and Kerry over Bush. It's people like her who give credence to the "liberal bias" shrieks, while doing more harm than good to the cause.

GravatarHow much fun the press could have had during the Bush campaign, where our boy Bernie was frequently by his side, if they hadn't been too busy peddling false Kerry quotes...
-Atrios 10:55 PM

And yet MODO acts or at least tries to think she's on our side more than the others?
And it's people like her who hurt us more than the blatant lies uttered by Rush Limbug or Anthrax Coulter.
Since She won't be fired, we migh as well alienate her as a wingnut publicly, and fast, so that liberals and others can avoid her.

MYOB'

Gravatarokay, so now we have had clearly demonstrated for us the sort of people bush surrounds himself with. why aren't people exposing the "dirt" on these people as we go along? why wasn't kerik exposed ON THE FREAKING CAMPAIGN TRAIL? clearly it was not difficult to find out the wide variety of escapades kerik's been involved in.

start publishing some dirt on, for instance, condi rice -- what's with her and scowcroft? what's the real dirt on her background? what about karl rove? i cannot imagine that he is actually "clean" enough that a great stench would not be released with a little bit of pulling back of the proverbial sheets.

i am really kind of disgusted with all the hand-clapping going on about "Oh we knew all along he was a weasel, those repugs are such hypocrites." well, for crying out loud, anyone with any sense knows they are weasels and hypocrites.

the important thing is to expose it up front BEFORE (or at least once) they are "appointed" or "elected" or "consulted" by those making decisions which affect what is happening to this country.

i've also been disappoointed by how much glee progressives/dems seem to get from the sexual aspects of kerik's behavior when in fact the actual demonstrated corruption is the much more important issue. When progressives and dems highlight the scandalous over the criminal, it provides the repugs with significant cover to continue with the criminal.

come on guys! let's get it together here!

i'm doing my part, compiling research on our good old pal alberto g., annointed to be our next attorney general. i'm just hoping that I will get my diatribe finished soon enough for it to be effective. i can't do it alone.

Be an ANT! Do your bit to express outrage through letter, email and phone contact to congress on a WEEKLY OR DAILY BASIS! this is really what we need, I believe. Waiting till 2006 and HOPING that the dems are going to get their act together is sure to lead to disappointment. TAKE THE REPUGS DOWN NOW! THey've set themselves up with all this high-horse crap. KNOCK them off the horse with hardened chunks of their own shit.

Gravatarkerry laid down way too quickly after the election. it raises questions to his lame performance during the campaign. sure, he won all three debates, but look who he was up against.

kerry seemed to be handcuffed the whole time and his silence now only prompts thoughts of compliance.

GravatarKitty, you moron, Chelsea is a poised, intelligent, successful young woman who, by all appearances, has a very strong relationship with both of her parents. Even as a teenager, when traveling with her parents on state visits, she was a credit to this country. Of ALL the garbage you repug bastards have thrown at the Clintons for all these years, being bad parents is a charge that would never stick. Considering that Chelsea spent her teenage years in the fishbowl of the White House, surrounded by the toxic atmosphere created by scumbags like Starr and Gingrich, it is a miracle that she turned out so well. She is powerful evidence of Bill and Hillary's parenting skills. So STFU about Hillary. Go inflict yourself on some other blog. And buy yourself a calendar so you can figure out how long you have been hanging on to all that misplaced venom.
