Dubon said the head of the Munich tax office, Ludwig Mirre, excused Hitler from paying tax only after first formally writing to him to ask permission. An assistant to Hitler wrote back to Mirre: "Herr Hitler accepts your proposal."

Mirre was promoted a month later to head of the German tax office and given a 41 per cent pay rise.

"It's all so ridiculous," said Dubon. "But in a dictatorship everything the dictator does is correct."

GravatarSo the last time I went to a work-related party, the invitation said "casual business attire" and people showed up in everything from taffeta bridesmaids' dresses (and yes, you can tell bridesmaids' dresses from other formals, starting with that they're uglier) to (in one case) a sleeveless silver sweater-dress, combat boots and a silver chain link belt. This was not a small girl, either.

The result of which is that I'm going to a party in an hour and I'm wondering, do I dig out the tiara and the heels, or just throw on a full-body snowsuit because chances are there will be people there in both those things.

Plus the last party said "no kids" and at least three people brought their squalling two-year-olds. So clearly the invite is just some kind of pleasant fiction. Fuck, is it the definition of Internet Addiction that I'd rather be sitting here chatting with you people? Do I need IA or something?

A.

Nope.

Haven't watched more than three seconds of anything to do with pro/college sports in the last 30 years.

GravatarOK, folks, I've figured out what Little Green Footballs are. You know when you pick some really sticky mucous out of your nose and just can't get it off your finger? and you roll it and roll it around between your finger and thumb til it's flickable? and it's shaped just like a football, and it's little, and green? Yup, that's it.

Gravatarbigvic,

I didn't see the game, but the fact that Louisville got cheated by UK doesn't surprise me in the least. Cain'tuck's been doing that to the Birds for years.

It's almost a KY state law that the 'Cats will beat Louisville late on a "questionable" call.

GravatarFor anybody that was reading the catblogging thread last night, here goes.

We were all gone till around 8:00. When we got in, it looked like the cat and dogs had been having a major throwdown. Toys everywhere, pillows knocked off the sofa and a small Xmas tree that was on a side table in the family room had been knocked to the floor and all the ornimants were scattered everywhere. I think they were having their own party.

GravatarActually I am curious, has anyone manage to dissuade Incognito from giving String a bath. And does Incognito have a good medical plan?

GravatarI think Incog will give String a bath -- something I've never been brave enough to attempt w/ my cat. My theory is that String, being the smart cat that he is, will figure that a bath is a small price to pay for the regular meals, the nice safe place under Incog's bed, and the regular petting he gets from Incog.

GravatarWell, if the bather is gentle and the cat is trusting, a cat can be given a bath without any damage to either party. Not likely to be fun though. My recollection is that everyone ended up wet and grouchy.

GravatarNot a blogwhore, but scary shit about DoD trying to squeeze more power out of intelligence gathering. (NYTimes)

No blogwhoring by me, cuz I've been writing about the types that Citizen Smash said he supports. The Trotskyite Legislator pushing democracy for Hong Kong in his Che Guevara shirt and the Catholic Bishop Zen pushing democracy and denouncing the crony capitalism, that the Heritage Foundation always ranks no.1 in their Economic Freedom poll.

GravatarHecate, it is pretty interesting to see his commentary. I have never seen someone so unprepared for a cat. This is building into an epic. I have had to give a cat a bath from time to time, particularly long hairs when they ahem need a bit of help if the litter is a bit clingy. It was never a situation in which they showed their gratitude for all the fine assistance and care I give them. The bandaids and Hydrogen Peroxide were always at hand.

But the worst part of the whole affair are the days of recriminating glares I get afterwards. Theya re not forgiving animals.

GravatarOh and in case the thought of the DoD playing a more active role in intelligence gathering, let me quote this one graf.

"""The details of the plan remain secret and are evolving, but indications of its scope and significance have begun to emerge in recent weeks. One part of the overall proposal is being drafted by a team led by Lt. Gen. William G. Boykin, a deputy under secretary of defense."""

GravatarA new poetic form is born; the Epic Limerick...

Two GIs what went to see Keith
Set to punchin' out eachother's teeth
Just an interservice fray
Like you see every day
A soldier's home grown stress relief

Then the 101st Chairborne did shout
T'was the fault of an Antiwar lout
That some Liberal creep
Had attacked their dear Freep
Yes, that's what the whole thing's about!

But a fact is a stupid ol' thing
And it's not for our noble Reicht Wing
To let truth interfere
With some shit they hold dear
Though it shine out like Goat's-Ass Bling-Bling

I could go on, but I think it's best
That I give my poor finger a rest
But if you ladies and gents
Of poetickle bents
Care to take over, hey, be my guest

It is odd. When I was growing up, we had strings of lights that made it from years before I arrived. My mother still has sets of them now. We are talking lights spanning 40 to 50 years of age. I can't buy strings of lights that last more than a couple of years now. The only ones that last are the ones that never seem to fit anywhere and don't get used.

The sets I am thinking about had snowball bulbs. I suspect they were and are highly flammable, but the things seldom died.

As far as aluminum trees are concerned, I first saw them back in the 60's in Muncie. I always thought they had a really cool look myself if of good quality and set up without too much geegaw.

Theya re coming back, there are several sites advertising them, but they are a bit pricey now. There are also sites that sell old, restored ones like they are antiques. What is old is new again.

Gravatari have a small book that he and his father wrote together-so funny.

My dad is a big Bob & Ray fan, so he played me a bunch of their stuff when I was a kid. It was quite good, sa I recall. Bob was also great on Get A Life, another tragically unappreciated Chris Elliott vehicle.

My dad also has about 7-8 Bill Cosby albums - that's some good stuff. Also like George Carlin, some Lenny Bruce ("Thank you, Masked Man"), and Tom Lehrer. And Sam Kinison - totally, utterly vile, but bloody hilarious.

GravatarOk, I will enter the best blogwhore category too.

1) Because the blog is new, and I need the traffic to massage my ego and keep the blog going.

2) Because I am quite proud of the latest article on how Putin is trying to put together a Russia/China/India/Brazil coalition and how the EU is also trying to catch up fast in the superpower stakes.

Surely only the most reality-robbed of neocons would assume that second tier powers would sit idly on their hands while the US ruled unhindered except by the flea bites of third-world based terrorists.

Regards, Cernig
