What really pisses me off about these clowns is that they think a J school degree means they are more qualified than the unwashed masses to determine economics, politics, war, budgetary issues etc.
Will any journalist please fucking show me the curriculum for your classes that made you the world's greatest experts on these topics?
All you learned in journalism school is to write things like, "The Bush administration announced that the sky was purple with pink polka dots, others disagree", with relevant matching quotes.
Get off the cross you pricks, we could use the wood.

My nomination for Accessory Before The Fact to the murder of 100,000 innocents and a few not yet adjudicated: Judith Miller. Fucking A! Right!
It doesn't matter if she goes to jail for the Plame Affair in which she again may be an Accessory (After the fact) but she should be living at least in her own private hell for the former crimes.
Since when do reporters get immunity for crimes... especially crimes against humanity.

Yeah, the "ball" as in the "cotillion," where you can be consistently wrong (yeah, that "transfer of power" sure did reduce casualties in Iraq this summer, Nags) and idiotically snide ("some Democratic party insiders claim that John Kerry's greatest weakness is his desire to know a lot about his own policy proposals"), and because of that get fawned over as if you know something besides shallow "insider opinion."

By contrast:
Geneva Overholser, the Curtis B. Hurley Chair in public affairs reporting, Missouri School of Journalism, Washington bureau
"This was the year when it finally became unmistakably clear that objectivity has outlived its usefulness as an ethical touchstone for journalism. The way it is currently construed, "objectivity" makes the media easily manipulable by an executive branch intent on and adept at controlling the message. It produces a rigid orthodoxy, excluding voices beyond the narrowly conventional.
"And it leads to a false balance of `on the one hand, on the other hand' stories that make the two `hands' appear equal even when factual weight lies 98 percent on one side. Objectivity's most effective use today is as a cudgel in the hands of those who wish to beat up on the media."

George Will has a column in which he is pushing the Crichton enviornmentalism is a fraud theme. The blue haired scold of establishment "journalism" manages to plug Easterbrook too.
This is going to be the story of the year, at least for a while.
All, and I mean all, conservative columnists always say the same things one after another and they rewrite their own columns at least once a year. We really don't need more than one. And while where cutting down on the redundant, we don't need both The New Republic and The National Review. One should really go during the coming depression.
Order your garden seed early.

Democracy Now! played Bill Moyers' speech to the Media Reform conference in Madison from back in May(the transcript is online here, but I didn't look diligently for it).
Moyers ripped electronic media a new one in that speech. Funny, I don't remember heavy coverage of it in the NYT. I don't even remember the NYT making a point out of complete journalistic nonsense like this:
That's how I felt when I saw Oliver North reporting on Fox from Iraq, pressing our embattled troops to respond to his repetitive and belittling question, "Does Fox Rock? Does Fox Rock?" Oliver North and I may be in the same 'media' but we are not part of the same message.

My dad used to be a journalist in southern & central Ontario. He did some good work. I was proud & impressed, so much so that I considered following in his footsteps. I ended up getting my BFA in Creative Writing. I didn't want to be a part of journalism as it stands today. My dad's era is gone.

If all the J-schools in the country, and all the MFA programs in creative writing, were to magically swap their staffs, student bodies, and alumni overnight, would anyone notice?
When will papers and wire services in civilized countries start using the tag we used for decades for Pravda and Isvestia and the People's Daily -- 'state-run American media today announced...'?

A few months ago the Times printed a front-page story in which parenthetically the massive bank failures in the Eighties was attributed to excess government regulation.
This is not a misstatement of fact; this is truth turned on its head. This is a lie. The simple fact is and was that the S & L crisis was caused not by too much government regulation, but by the loosening of existing regulations. It's really a matter of historical fact. It's not open to argument.
I sent a letter to Okrent, expecting a quick apology and a correction. That's not what happened. He didn't choose to recognize or discuss the matter of the Times printing a lie. He passed the matter on to another editor (the editor of the original story) who did nothing.
Okrent is a shill, a hack, and truly despicable. He is in a position where he could make a difference and instead he chose to defend the powers-that-be and their lies. I have nothing but the utmost contempt for him. I only hope that someday, somehow, he is called to account for his behavior.

Louis Althusser called them "Ideological State Apparati", which about described them perfectly... unfortunately, nobody paid any attention to Althusser cuz he was, ya know, a French Commie...he was pretty wacked out at the end, having died in prison for the murder of his wife...

Dr. Pedant -
I most enjoyed the Times' story this morning concern the Chinese involvement in the Alberta oil industry - a story that went on for pages without bothering to mention that the Chinese government effectively is in the process of obtaining control of Husky Oil, of Calgary, and all its pipeline access and exploration rights. The Times story seems predicated on the idea that such involvement might-maybe happen, but that everything was status quo and besides it's just Alberta and anyway they like the US best. Just a remarkable bit of misdirection and mis-statement which seems almost designed to pacify - who or what I cannot imagine. Fascinating work tho.

OT, but via Betty Bowers, here's a letter to Laura Bush:
DATE: 12/18/2004
SUBJECT: merry christmas
NAME: sharron reece
MESSAGE: i am very upset at what i a m hearing about not being allowed to use merry christmas in christmas carols and greetings. this is infringing on my rights. i can not believe that more of our christianity is being taken away from us. it has to stop. our military is serving and dying in countries to tach them christianity and we are losing those right here in the usa. please.do what you can to stop this or tell me what i can do . thank you.
sharron reece
Dear Sharron,
It is a burden the Lord Jesus has asked us to bear, dear. Being a persecuted minority of 90% of the population is never easy. Especially when the remaining 10% willfully refuse to not be polite enough to act exactly like we tell them to act. As a Christian, when someone smiles, waves and doesn't greet me with the exact words I demand, sometimes I feel like beating them to a bloody blob of Christ-hating hamburger meat.

from the salon piece:
"The White House had a perfect deal with Miller," he said. "Chalabi is providing the Bush people with the information they need to support their political objectives with Iraq, and he is supplying the same material to Judy Miller. Chalabi tips her on something and then she goes to the White House, which has already heard the same thing from Chalabi, and she gets it corroborated by some insider she always describes as a 'senior administration official.' She also got the Pentagon to confirm things for her, which made sense, since they were working so closely with Chalabi. Too bad Judy didn't spend a little more time talking to those of us in the intelligence community who had information that contradicted almost everything Chalabi said."
Long after the fact, Miller conceded in her interview with me that she was wrong about the aluminum tubes, but not that she had made a mistake.
"We worked our asses off to get that story," she said. "No one leaked anything to us. I reported what I knew at the time. I wish I were omniscient. I wish I were God and had all the information I had needed. But I'm not God and I don't know. All I can rely on is what people tell me. That's all any investigative reporter can do. And if you find out that it's not true, you go back and write that. You just keep chipping away at an assertion until you find out what stands up."

A story titled "Illicit Arms Kept Till Eve of War, an Iraqi Scientist Is Said to Assert" was based on a source she never met or even interviewed. For that story, Miller watched a man in a baseball cap from a distance, who pointed at the desert floor, and used that as a basis for filing a piece that confirmed the U.S. had discovered "precursors to weapons of mass destruction." According to her sources in the Mobile Exploitation Team Alpha of the U.S. Army, this unnamed scientist from Hussein's WMD program had told them the "building blocks" of WMD were buried in that spot. Miller explained to me several months later that she had seen a letter from the man, written in Arabic and translated for her, that gave his claims credence.
"I have a photograph of him," she explained. "I know who he is. There's no way I would have gone forward with such a story without knowing who my source was, even if I got it from guys in my unit. You know, maybe it turns out that he was lying or ill-informed or cannot be independently verified."
The next day she was on national television, including PBS's "NewsHour with Jim Lehrer," proclaiming that what had been discovered was "more than a smoking gun" and was a "silver bullet in the form of an Iraqi scientist."

All you learned in journalism school is to write things like, "The Bush administration announced that the sky was purple with pink polka dots, others disagree", with relevant matching quotes.
You forgot the "House Minority Leader Pelosi insisted that the sky is in fact blue, with white clouds" counterpoint.
You also forgot where commentators and pundits then question why the Democrats, in insisting that "the sky is, in fact, blue, with white clouds", are so out of touch with mainstream America. The "liberal" pundit might even point out how the Dems. out to get their facts right and that the clouds sometimes appear grey and at sunset do appear to be pink polka-dots on a purple background in middle America, at least - so the Dems. shouldn't force their coastal perspective of how the sky looks on middle America.

The NY Times is very much a mixed bag these days. On the one hand you have stenographers like Miller whose reporting about WMDs was essentially wrong. On the other, David Cay Johnston is one of the few major newspaper reporters to report cogently on Bush's fiscal and tax policies, and Krugman is one of the few columnists in the land to say Bush's economic, tax and fiscal policies are B.S. and explain why.

Ahh, letters to the editor. This morning, from the St. Pete Times (I couldn't find the article that prompted either of these):
Re: Merry Christmas . . . or else, Dec. 19.
I also have wished a "Merry Christmas" to every cashier at the stores I have shopped in during the past several weeks, from Atlanta to Miami. If they don't respond with "Merry Christmas" or something similar, I simply leave my merchandise at the checkout counter and leave, telling the cashier that I did not receive the proper response, and that I do not accept the "politically correct nonsense" as being in the true spirit and that I did not need the items enough to accept their business practice, and will not shop where they do not recognize Christmas as being important to many of us.
-- Richard Deininger, Largo
ARRRRGH! But followed by this:
Minding our holiday manners
Re: Merry Christmas . . . or else.
How petty it would be of me were I not to wish you a "Merry Christmas" instead of "Happy Holidays." How very petty and "un-Christian" it is of you to insist that I say one rather than the other.
I wish my Jewish friends a Happy Hanukkah. I wish my Christian friends a Merry Christmas. I wish those that I know celebrate Kwaanza a Happy Kwaanza. When I am uncertain of their affiliation, a "Happy Holidays" seems appropriate. This is not a matter of political correctness but rather one of good manners. "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you" - especially in this holiday (excuse me, Christmas) season.

"its not my JOB to find out if its TRUE; its my job to write WHAT THEY ARE THINKING!!!!"
NYT could save a lot of money if it just hired people to hold microphones and stenos to do the transcription and press the print button. Maybe send out the occasional photographer.

chris/tx - Dang! I wish the snow had held off here until today, because we are going to get a rapid warming up up here in Dallas. But I'm really glad for y'all that the front got down there.
Happy Everything - chris. If you have to live in Houston, you at least deserve a little Christmas weather. Or seasonal weather - whichever you prefer.

silleigh - there were 6 letters to the Dallas paper this morning from xians bitching about a column in which the writer decried the Christmas whining from the belligerent xian contingent. Every single letter said that all of the writer's non-xian friends weren't offended by "Merry Christmas." Strangely, none of those Jewish/Muslim/African Americans wrote in themselves to say they weren't offended.
Bleed, bleed bleed. Can we expect all the poor martyred xians to go to their great reward for New Year's? I mean, how long can they continue to bleed before they keel over?

Regarding "the Holidays":
Hasn't anybody figured this out? Just wish people a "Happy New Year" and everything will be ok (is EGBOK a nationwide thing or just an LA thing?
Sure different cultures and faiths have other New Years - but pretty much everyone celebrates the American/Secular/Gregorian New Year in one way or the other.
'Course, maybe its 'cause I grew up right accross the San Gabriel River from Long Beach, CA, but I also would vote for changing our national celebration of Christmas to a national celebration of the far more inclusive holiday of Kwaansa. It's a truly American holiday, and if we let the Christians alone have Christmas, maybe they can put the Christ back into it like they are always saying they want to do but we won't let them!

As one of those benighted souls with a journalism degree (something I regretted almost the moment I was handed the diploma), I can tell you when I was in J-school, stenography was not in the curriculum. This was, however, in the immediate post-Watergate era, when reporters believed that the truth was the objective of journalism. I don't know what they teach in J-schools today; probably the proper application of TV makeup.

Agree...I still can't believe how it all went down that night. That sudden, turn-on-a-dime, late-evening reversal from Kerry to Bush, and the repeated insistence by the media that "Well, everything went so smoothly this time, what a decisive mandate victory for Bush, thank God this isn't going to drag out for weeks like Gore did. Moral values." (*choke*, spit out semen)
There was no way in HELL they were gonna let Kerry win, and I think deep down inside I knew it, even though I was wildly optimistic up to the morning of Nov. 2.

We should all suffer such persecution. To top it off, the local rag ran a typically illogical rant from Kathleen Parker on the same subject. The wingnuts control all branches of government and their Congressional leaders openly consort with whack jobs like the Rev. Moon with impunity, and they're persecuted? Now that's chutzpah.

When i was teaching in the LSU j-school (lately purchased by the Manship family, a prominent quasi-journalist family in Red Stick), i suggested a very unpopular measure: Jopurnalism should not be offered as a major, but instead as a minor; any aspiring journalist ought to have a solid background in some OTHER discipline...
it didn't go over well.
btw, journalism is usually now an afterthought in universities, anyway. it is contained in schools of Mass Communications, or Media, or some other funky name. And make-up IS part of the (so-called) curriculum of TV news...i kid not...

DAS - The Economist published poll results that showed that the number of voters citing "moral values" as a prime issue for them is way way down since 1996. In '96, 40% cited "moral values." In '00, it was 35%, and in '04 it was only 22%.
The whole thing is a huge strawman that the fundies and the Rovians cooked up to support the non-mandate.
They're going to milk it for all it's worth, and much more, because it's not worth much.

On the counter-topic of Christmas - all those who are obsessed with being persecuted Christians should read this referencing a Christian who was actually persecuted.
They should think back - whom did they support in the 1980s? Could it be St. Ronnie, protector of the Salvadoran death squads?
I remember the 1980s - I remember how people in our synagogue sheltered refugees from El Salvador and wondered whether even they would be safe from the Death Squads that did come into America with a blind eye from our government to kill those who sought refuge in our country.
When will we learn the real lesson of 9/11: blow-back's a bitch? And what kinda blow-back are we gonna get from our Iraq adventure? I bet you that'll be a bitch ... and it won't be the fat red-staters who pay but those of us effete liberals who will pay for the political sins of the safe and sound reactionaries.
Judith Miller - you say you are "fucking right"? Well, if you are so good at it, go to Iraq and be a comfort woman to our soldiers. Otherwise STFU and crawl back into the hole from whence you came.

I think this moronic "Christmas Under Attack" is a device by Bill O'Reilly to trace his influence through the media.
What an ego booster to watch all the mainstream media outlets and all the left and right wing blogs and all the LTTEs talking about what O'Reilly wants to talk about.
Kinda wipes out the loofah and falafel ridicule he suffered.
But then, I'm a loopy conspiracy theorist from way back.

Phredd,
The Christmas under attack meme predates Falafal boy - it is a genuine meme.
I remember growing up the fundies would view every single time they could not score a victory (i.e. no prayer in school, no creationism taught in school, etc.) as a sign that they were being persecuted.
To them, since the rest of us would otherwise go to hell, that they should be stopped from spreading the word in every possible forum was not only discrimination against their free exercize of religion but a jeopardizing of souls. They really believed they had a right and a duty to evangelize everywhere and at all times - loudly! They always stirred up lots of trouble at my High School with their constant attempts to insert prayers into morning announcements, etc.
Of course, it some point it turned out that the initial faculty advisor to the Christian club at our school had been having an affair with an ex-student of his (nobody could figure this out either - his wife was far hotter than his ex-student ... and nicer personality-wise, too) ... so go figure.

Woody Guthrie...when I got my degree many years ago, journalism had already been subsumed into the Dept. of Mass Communications. My faculty adviser was also in favor of journalism students majoring in other subjects. I also got a degree in German, but that's not exactly what he had in mind. As for TV, there is very little reporting anymore on local TV anymore. It's mostly fluff, fires, and accidents, and since local TV is the farm system for the networks, a lot of network reporters have done little serious reporting. As an avid news consumer, I have to say that a lot of incisive reporting is in the small opinion journals and yes, in the blogospher. Some bloggers have done reportage that puts the major media to shame.

Back online for a moment before I have to run off again...
Mr. Simels, if you're around, the fantabulous, raven-haired, brilliant, sultry NYMary, the wry, Noel Cowardesque, smoking jacket-wearing, twinkly-eyed Thersites and I will be catching up. I cannot speak to Kenosha Kid's physical attributes, but I'm sure she's fabulous, as well.
Added benefit: I may be considering a "friendly competition" kickboxing turn on the 8th. My camp is hosting a "smoker", in which muay thai camps around the city gather for some "fun", if you call gearing up and wailing on each other fun. I may participate. Keep you all apprised.
And now to bestow gifts upon my friend's child. Like he doesn't have enough toys. Oy vey.

I guess I missed the "Christmas Under Attack" meme until loofah-boy started whining about it....but then, I rarely subject myself to right-wing rhetoric (for physical health reasons) so it only came to my attention when loofah-boy started up, and then on to CNN etc etc. But I'll certainly accept your more complete historical knowledge.

DAS...yep, St. Ronnie was responsible for quite a reduction in the number of Maryknoll sisters and Jesuits in Central America.
When I used to work in another section of the USPS, we used to see the MaryKnoll mini-magazines, updating supporters on their latest issues and do-goods. I've no problem with this at all. Hey, if you're actually out there doing good deeds as a Xtian, actually living what the Jesus Philosopher taught, I'm all for you. Praise be!
What ticked me off was that I was piecing one of the mags together that the machine had torn up. Some wingnut idiot came up and said we ought to just throw all the damn things away--it was all Communist propaganda.
Me, the atheist, asked (okay hauled off on) this jerk to refrain from calling anybody who helped the poor and oppressed a ridiculous jingo hatred name like that, just because he was an ignorant, miserable fuck. You could hear me all over the building, telling him off.
Me, the atheist. Defending Xtians. Who woulda thunk?

LJ...some orders took a lot of heat, some of it from the Pope, for supposedly embracing liberation theology. Some religious did, some merely took Jesus at his word to feed the hungry, clothe the naked and comfort the sick. Many, most notably Bishop Oscar Romero, were martyred. I never could understand why the right wing could not comprehend that perpetuating oligarchies and dictatorships in Central America merely played into the hands of the Communists. Communism has never made headway in societies with large, stable middle classes and true opportunity.

If they don't respond with "Merry Christmas" or something similar, I simply leave my merchandise at the checkout counter and leave..
Richard Deininger apparently will not be satisfied until every cashier in America is reduced to a wind- up doll chirping "Merry Christmas" to him. Who exactly is being PC here? The right is very good at accusing others of doing the very thing they are doing- imposing their lockstep thinking on everyone else, or else.
Why don't we just stamp "Jesus" on everything and be done with it?

Tamales are an xmas tradition in Texas as well as the rest of the southwest. I'd love it if someone could tell me why that is. I mean, I understand that the latino population is responsible, I just have never heard or read why they originated the tradition of tamales at xmas.

I, personally, feel that this is just wrong - there's no chile involved at all, for one thing, but I suppose someone will think it divine.....
Chocolate Tamale Candies
From Kathy Cano Murillo
Arizona Republic
Dec. 22, 2004 12:00 AM
12 dried corn-husk strips, about 4 by 8 inches each (see note)
2 wedges Mexican chocolate (about 3/4 ounce)
1 cup semisweet or milk chocolate chips
Thin strips of corn husk or holiday ribbon, for tying
Soak corn husks in water for 30 minutes to soften.
Break up chocolate wedges and combine with chocolate chips in a microwave-safe bowl. Microwave on 50 percent power in 15- to 30-second intervals, stirring after each interval, until smooth but not completely melted.
Remove corn husks from water and pat dry. Spread about 2 teaspoons chocolate in the middle of each husk. Fold the sides over the chocolate, overlapping them, then fold the ends in toward the middle. Tie with a thin strip of corn husk or holiday ribbon. (Tamales will measure about 1 inch across by 3 inches long when folded.)
Chill tamales in the refrigerator until chocolate hardens. Peel corn husk away from chocolate as you eat, like eating a banana.
Makes 12 tamales.
Variations: Before folding tamales, sprinkle chocolate with chopped nuts, toasted pine nuts or a few grains of ground chipotle pepper and red sprinkles.
Note: Dried corn husks for tamales are sold in the Hispanic foods section of most grocery stores. An 8-ounce bag contains dozens of husks; they'll keep indefinitely.
Approximate values per tamale: 82 calories, 3 g fat, 3 mg cholesterol, 1 g protein, 9 g carbohydrates, 0 fiber, 12 mg sodium, 33 percent calories from fat.

Kinda wipes out the loofah and falafel ridicule he suffered.
I dunno, around here the loofah and falafel ridicule seems to have been intensified by O'Reilly's "war on Christmas" bullshit. I for one never get tired of it! O'Loofah is such an abject cretin that I don't think he can possibly be abused enough. Even though the whole Christmas issue is tired, I'm sure we'll still have O'Falafel to kick around 365 days a year, since no scandal ever sticks to a Republican unless it is someone the GOP bigwigs intend to destroy.

GWPDA (and any others who ever get to ABQ):
There's a new verdad Mexicano restaurant opened here, called Adelitas, on 4thNW near the corner of Montano. Really good stuff. The red chili is molten and the chicken mole is to die for...plus the inside of the place looks like Vera Cruz...
They have been open such a short time they do not even have thier liquor license yet, but they say around Ano Nuevo... the chicken mole, con arroz y legumge was $7.50 (ish), and all you'd want at a single sitting...
GWPDA: I confess your goodies are not in the mail yet. The lines were too awful...I'm thinking monday will be much easier...
Mucho gusto con las comidas de Navidad, a todos mi amigos y amigas...

OT, but ties into several things we've been discussing of late:
One outtake of a brilliant dissection of the issue:
Watch Dan Rather apologize for not getting his facts straight, humiliated before the eyes of America, voluntarily undermining his credibility and career of over thirty years. Observe Donna Brazille squirm as she is ridiculed by Bay Buchanan, and pronounced irrelevant and nearly non-existent. Listen as Donna and Nancy Pelosi and Senator Charles Schumer take to the airwaves saying that they have to go back to the drawing board and learn from their mistakes and try to be better, more likable, more appealing, have a stronger message, speak to morality. Watch them awkwardly quote the bible, trying to speak the ‘new’ language of America. Surf the blogs, and read the comments of dismayed, discombobulated, confused individuals trying to figure out what they did wrong. Hear the cacophony of voices, crying out, "Why did they beat me?"
And then ask anyone who has ever worked in a domestic violence shelter if they have heard this before.
They will tell you: Every single day.
And that's just the opener.

Shawn...you're much braver than I. I can't listen to Rush. Whatever limited reasoning ability he ever possessed apparently was destroyed by his drug use. The man simply cannot construct a logical, well-reasoned argument, unlike say, William F. Buckley. One would think with Rush's stature in the talk radio world, he'd be on every talking head show imaginable. That he isn't is indicative of his inability to debate.

From the MM article: "The days of trying to move the Democratic Party to the right are over. We lost a very close election (a one-state difference) by running the #1 liberal in the Senate. Not bad. The country is shifting in our direction, not to the right. But the country was attacked and people were scared. They were manipulated with fear. And America has never thrown a sitting president out during wartime. That’s the facts."

Barndog - -Green- olive, right in the middle. No Xmas tamale right without one.
Tena? My Mum's people were from Missouri and Oklahoma - fresh black-eye peas with ham, custard cornbread, fresh tomatoes, the traditional New Year's Day menu. The more black-eye peas you ate, the more fortune you'd have in the new year. I think it was pretty much a mild meal tho for grownups were pretty wobbly after Hogmanay.
Kono - garcias, mijo, or Duran's, whatver. Garcias I think... 9toed has done yeoman duty by me, so for now, I'm safe. But I looked around yesterday and Arthur was making off with the posole package...

steve simels,
Didn't they mention that Pleasants was a spy in the NY Times obit?
It was an open secret that the guy who was the 'dean' of Journalism profs at LSU (and one-time literal dean of the school, too; but that's another story) while I was there in the 80s travelled the globe as an earnest advocate of the free press...
and a CIA asset on the side...
Retired from LSU, and went back to Columbia, MO, as Emeritus Prof...He was a publishing machine, and his last book appeared in 2000. He's gotta be 80 by now if he's still plugging along...and god knows he might be.
John Merrill?
Originally from Yazzoo City Mississippi...him, and Billy Sims, Jerry Clowers, and (usta edit the new yorker, famously southern...ummmmwilly morris...)

I used to hang out a bit with Bill Paley's son. He dated a friend of mine. I wonder if he knew his dad was a spook. He seemed so incredibly normal and down to earth (he was a pretty hip, great looking guy who owned a very cutting edge music club in downtown Baltimore). I liked him especially because he could have been in NYC or Hollywood but chose B-town).

What always frightens me is how much the Rethugs sound like wife-beaters - saying that only they can keep us "safe", etc.
Read the whole link, DAS. That is exactly what this writer asserts.
Here's another goodie:
Listen to George Bush say that the will of God excuses his behavior. Listen, as he refuses to take responsibility, or express remorse, or even once, admit a mistake. Watch him strut, and tell us that he will only work with those who agree with him, and that each of us is only allowed one question (soon, it will be none at all; abusers hit hard when questioned; the press corps can tell you that). See him surround himself with only those who pledge oaths of allegiance. Hear him tell us that if we will only listen and do as he says and agree with his every utterance, all will go well for us (it won't; we will never be worthy).
And watch the Democratic Party leadership walk on eggshells, try to meet him, please him, wash the windows better, get out that spot, distance themselves from gays and civil rights. See the Democrats cry for the attention and affection and approval of the President and his followers. Watch us squirm. Watch us descend into a world of crazy-making, where logic does not work and the other side tells us we are nuts when we rely on facts. A world where, worst of all, we begin to believe we are crazy.
Again, all of this are the hallmarks of an abusive relationship.

I agree with the sentiment that the we should not be moving to the right. In fact, I think we would have done better if we had someone more liberal running!
OTOH, I am sure we can look forward to more DLC complaining on how Kerry lost the election 'cause he was too liberal, Heathers holding forth about how the Presidency is reserved for Southerners and Northeasterners should not apply and general comments from the pundit class about how we Dems. are too far to the left of the mainstream.
The key is having someone in charge of the DNC who will say "look - who has our best interests at heart? a bunch of Heathers who like fellating macho Rethugs or our base?" - and realize that the Rethugs are not winning because they are moderate but because they have differentiated themselves - we cannot win by being Republican lite. Truman realized this ... even Republican-lite Clinton realizes this judging by some of his rhetoric -- when will the aparatus of our party realize this?

I feel like I know the regulars here personally. Some of the greatest wits & incisive commentators in America. You've kept me sane during the post election.
Duncan:
Great site. You perform a national service. Maybe Bush will recognize your greatness & bestow upon you the National Metal of Honor. Given the previous recent recipients, maybe not. But you deserve it anyway.
Have a good holiday, everyone. The best for you & yours. Keep on trucking.

NY Mary - Actually my cat's name pre-dated the Lotr movies, it was inspired by an old song that used the expression "it's a pippin" ("I Know What I've Got" covered by Dr. John on his "Afterglow" album) Also because Pippin is a variety of apple.

The "Wife-beater" motif is part and parcel of the whole "Stern Father" stereotype that is the underlying image of il Douche, the GOPukes, the Bushista regime entire.
They ARE bullies and thugs.
They WILL fuck you up, when there's enough of them and they're holding the baseball bats.
They hold the country in a thrall of fear and guilt.
They WILL NOT BE OUSTED PEACEFULLY!
They will NOT walk away from the power they have done so much to acquire.

And what the regime fails to remember is that, every now and then, the beaten wife has enough, and stops the bastard wife-beater. Permanently. But violently.

I had a brain synopsis. Actually, I lived at 108th & Broadway. Interesting apartment building - just about all the tenants were grad or professional school students. The elderly owner used to goose all the women occupants when they came to see him.
Where is St. Nicks Street?

i'm thinking either the Incredibles, Ray, Neverland or that Annette Benning movie. I know you would recommend the Eastwood boxing flick but no can do and Hotel Rwanda, well, not a very cheery holiday prospect.
Oh, and the main course will be Schezuan walnut shrimp at a great restaurant in my hood. Licking chops as I write this...

BTW:
My Christmas ---
My friend Laura the rock and roll
travel agent is having me over to
watch her fifty-inch DLP hdtv
and watch Festival Express -- starring
Janis Joplin, the Grateful Dead, the
Band, and just about everybody else --
footage that was never released until
this year.
They say its great...but even if its
not, its gotta be interesting.
Her boyfriend is bringing the DVD.

Here's my recent experience with Okrent.
I wrote him last week about the Time's poor coverage of stealth astroturf lady, Sandra Jaques, that spoke at the Chimps Social Security Conference. Their first response to me said "obviously anyone the White House has speak is highly partisan, so why should we bother pointing out what her real background is?"
Funny though, two days later they do another story on Jaques, this time devoting a few paragraphs to the fact that she was not just a single mom--she was in fact a powerful Rethug operative. Okrent's assistant emailed me to see if I had read the new story, which did what they should have done the first time around...
I don't know if this stuff is calculated or just sloppy incompetance...

To all my friends here at Eschaton:
Merry Whatever.
I'm not a believer, but I do partake of the December holiday. I like the food traditions (in our family it was the feast of the 7 fishes), and some of the music. Some.
I try to stay away from malls and getting involved in the buying crazies. Actually, this season, I didn't step foot in one store. Nice.
I've been coming here to Atrios' blog for 2 years now and have met some of the brightest, funniest people I've every had the good fortune to know.
This past November was devastating for me and you guys all helped me through it with your passion, humor and political smarts.
Thank you for being cyber friends. Never change. You are all unique and I value your friendship.

the times has lost the shine of being
honest and has hired scum to obscure
any reaction...okrent should just be ignored and any reaction should be directly to the editors and publisher...as far as the steno class reporting as been constantly one sided and not remotely fair...the real disgust has too be saved for the way okrent amd miller and their ilk defend themselves rather that defend the truth...

"its not my JOB to find out if its TRUE; its my job to write WHAT THEY ARE THINKING!!!!"
How can she tell what they are thinking?
Maybe he meant WHAT THEY ARE SAYING.
But what is what they are saying is not the truth? Has she been reporting stuff that is not true?
In the New York Times?
No way, dude!

"#1 liberal in the Senate"
I heard that this is not true--except for one year of his 20 year Senate career.
Isn't he maybe the 30th most liberal Senator, overall?
Or should we just continue passing statements like that along as a fact?

The media story of Okrent's year should be that Judith Miller still has her job at the NYT, while Jayson Blair does not.
Both Miller and Blair made up stories and got them published. But, only one of them helped the Bush regime murder tens of thousands of people.

Miller seems to have been a war whore for years. Check out this link:
The media story at the Times is that Okrent's refused to do his job from day one. Bob Somerby's done an excellent job noting this but also check out these two posts from Sunday.
The first is readers pointing out mistakes that the Times refused to correct (in something as minor as the art pages; and on a review of David Brock's book where the reviewer flat out lied) and that Okrent, though contacted about it, never felt the need to write about it: WHATIWANTEDTOWRITE
The second link (both entries posted Sunday) is the big media story at the Times in my opinion (this year) that Okrent outed a reader and remains in his job even though ethical and legal issues are raised by his actions
Okrent needs to go. Not in May when his term expires, but now. As the entry argues, "Daniel Okrent, Step Down."
I e-mailed the second one to Okrent's office and to Bill Keller at
executive-editor@nytimes.com
I think they need to realize that, as Sam Seder points out, this ain't going away. We're not going to forget it.
