My kitty is in deep shit today. Once I petted him on getting out of the shower and he has never missed a shower since. He waits till I'm drying off, then, perched on the sink, tries to grab my arm with his teeth. Between that, sitting on keyboard, unthreading the sewing machine half a dozen times, trying to catch the needle as it goes up and down, and attacking our other cat - he is in the doghouse around here.
One redeeming quality. He sleeps up against back, just below the shoulder blades, purrs, and keeps me toasty.
He is twelve years old and was deballed at six months, the recommended age at that time.

I don't know cat breeds (other than the Maine Coon Cat and its ubiquitous cousin the Mall Coon Cat)--what kind is that? I can also spot a Sphinx (haha), but any solid-color longhair looks like a Persian to me. And then there are those cats that look like Egyptian statues, but I forget their name.

Along the lines of your black Santa....my 74 and 73 year-old parents (Dad's been sick and prayers/good wishes would be appreciated), when they moved into their condo a few years ago, acquired two large and very beautiful black angel statues to guard a straw-filled manger containing a very realistic Asian doll baby portraying Jesus...it has become a new tradition in their sometimes over-the-top Christmas decorating and both of them love noticing the reaction of 1st-time guests. Needless to say they are liberal Democrats and retired life-long innercity school teachers who have always pushed the envelope of life!
L'Chaim and Merry Christmas to all!

Pretty blue eyes, have always been a sucker for blue eyes. If only they didn't remind me of a skull, with the sky shining thru.
That Siamese is not having a Holy Happyday.
But then, a Siamese in a state of catnip-induced bliss would look still like it wanted to rip off your face. Just, you know, not right now...

QuiltLady--our maine coon, bonsai, insists on getting affection when i get out of the shower also. luckily for me, no biting. otherwise he does not want to be touched, just likes to watch everything. and for a 3-4 year old cat LOVES to chase a bare string. won't go for a feather on the string, or a cork, just bare string. he does, however, insist on being petted before he will eat. and sleeps on our bed with us.
cat blogging in preparation as i type this.

I had an apple-head Sealpoint Siamese (they call them apple-head as opposed to the type with the wedge-shaped head) from June 1975 (when he was two months) old until June 10, 1994 when he died at the age of 19-1/2.
His name was Piewacket.
There isn't a day when I don't think about him!

Dave, those li'l beasties are cute as all get-out. I'm actually starting to like animals again, from the pet-blogging. Perhaps it's the distance of the Internet that renders them cute to me once more.

To all my friends here at Eschaton:
Merry Whatever.
I'm not a believer, but I do partake of the December holiday. I like the food traditions (in our family it was the feast of the 7 fishes), and some of the music. Some.
I try to stay away from malls and getting involved in the buying crazies. Actually, this season, I didn't step foot in one store. Nice.
I've been coming here to Atrios' blog for 2 years now and have met some of the brightest, funniest people I've every had the good fortune to know.
This past November was devastating for me and you guys all helped me through it with your passion, humor and political smarts.
Thank you for being cyber friends. Never change. You are all unique and I value your friendship.

Phila -- now, there, ya see? If you'd told me ten years ago -- heck, two years ago -- how much I would enjoy w00t boobies, Friday Ferret/Cat/Nudibranch blogging, and hanging out with a bunch of other people who like to snarl about how obnoxious our government is, I woulda said, "Hah?" Now it's a part of my life.
Gonna be on intermittently this weekend, as I try to get things done around here. A Merry Christmas and various Happy Holidays to all, even the trolls. Be safe and have fun.

No he is not acting out of character. He loved going outdoors, but we now live in a coop and after four years, he still has not adjusted. Just too much energy and agressiveness.
Thanks for the concern, but we tend to be pretty careful cat parents and would be right on top of it if something was wrong. (Don't ask about the thousands spent cure him of a urinary track infection in 2002 while Mr. QuiltLady was out of work and the unemployment was running out.)

It doesn't matter what anyone else thinks of your cat. Your cat certainly doesn't care. As long as you love him.
One of my current kitties, Gracie, is no raving beauty, either. She's lazy and an attention hog. But she's Gracie, and I love her, anyway.
Plus, as a Calico, I know she'll scare away John Ashcroft if he ever tries to knock down my door.

Beautiful Siamese, Atrios. I've one Siamese and one half-Siamese, Bob. Bob was one of the best cats I've ever had. He just came up into the yard one day when I was weeding and wrapped himself around me and purred. He was marked like a Siamese, except the points were striped - he was half tabby. With big blue eyes. We already had 3 cats, but I knew I was keeping this one. I had to go somewhere, so I threw the 3 cats out, brought the new one in and left a note on the door that said: Don't let the cat inside out or the cats outside in. I left it for Mr. Tena on the front door. He comes home from work, reads that and thinks "Oh shit." But he fell in love with Bob. He was the only one of the 4 we let sleep with us, and Mr. Tena started it.
Had to have him put down a year and a half ago. He was totally deaf, his teeth were all rotten and needed to be pulled, and he had renal failure. I couldn't stand to let him suffer anymore. I loved that cat so much. Still have his ashes and don't really know what to do with them.

To Atrios, other catlovers and cat nonlovers too (what the hell, isn't this the time for peace), merry christmas - go easy on the food, and think of my beloved cats - I grew up with 16 of them (not all at the same time, of course) and the last one passed away a month ago
back home. I had a tough time consoling my 75+ year old father (who didn't feel half as distraught when his sons left for the US) on the phone.

Joanne - you are one of the most brilliant people I've ever talked to. You amaze me with what you know. I'm sure glad you have stuck around.
I'm glad everyone does - even the unnameable ones, sometimes. Hope they have a nice Yule down there in the damp beneath the bridges of the blogosphere. Keep warm, little trollies, and have a toddy on me.

Oh, Tena. [enormous collection of hugs] That makes me feel as good as anything has all week. Thank you so much.
I'm actually going to be in all weekend, just not online all the time. I have to get some new music done and update my main web site -- that's my only income source right now.
But, believe me, this place has gotten under my skin and into my blood. Couldn't do without it. And I've written at least a dozen songs based on threads here, so I know for a fact it's good for my creativity!

Merry Something to everyone. I don't contribute as much as some here (by a long shot!) but I think you've all kept my sanity for me as well. It helps to know there are others out there as stunned, outraged, frustrated, incredulous, etc.(OK I have to stop, but feel free to add to the list), as I am. The intelligent hopefulness expressed here daily has kept me going more than once. Thank you all.

My two furry children are adjusting to life back at the apartment after spending 3 days in a bedroom at my parents. What landlord says there will be 3 days of inspections December 21-23 and animals either have to have a human keeper on hand or be kenneled with 48 hours notice? (Actually, I know the answer to this from having worked in commercial real estate: the complex is most likely up for sale.)
So I took them to grandma, who loves them and feeds them all sorts of treats, even if one of them hides under the bed all day long. I went and fetched them last night and brought them home. Of course, Xena Warrior Princess, my siamese/tabby mix, protested quite vocally about the whole thing! This morning she was back to normal, which included her patented Fixed Look to Flying Leap on Shoulder [TM]. (Yes, I knew it was coming.)
Oh well, off for a nice holiday nap. I want to say that the commenters here have given me much food for thought over the past couple of years and I thank you.

Incog - My cat used to do that with his claws out, too. I finally got it through his head that that wasn't going to work. He does it now with his claws in. Before I got the idea through to him, however, I lost a lot of blood.
kneehigh slippers - not a bad idea.

Ô¿Ô--our bonsai makes up for his good looks by his inability to retract his front claws, ouch, and inability to extend his rear claws. no climbing. and hip dysplasia or something makes him overdo every jump. he only goes up to chair seat height, or bed, and when he jumps down sometimes does a front roll. mercifully, he thinks he is just a cat. he has caught birds and mice.

Tena, my great-uncle loved his cats. When he died he left instructions so that we could find all the ashes of his cats that had died, and we had to mix them with his ashes and then decant the lot into the brook in a park near his home. We did this.
And thanks to all of you for being here. It makes a big difference.

Had to have him put down a year and a half ago. He was totally deaf, his teeth were all rotten and needed to be pulled, and he had renal failure. I couldn't stand to let him suffer anymore. I loved that cat so much. Still have his ashes and don't really know what to do with them.
Tena
One of the hardest decisions to have to make, and I'm glad I haven't had to, yet. My older sister has a real problem that way; she's had dogs & cats forever, and tends to let them go far too long when they become ill, aged, or both. The whole fambly had to get on her case a few years ago to have a 15 year old Collie/mutt with senility and every disease known to dog finally put to sleep. It's been years, now, and she still isn't completely over it. Yet she gamely carries on; 4 dogs at present. No cats right now, probably because she's lost 5 to fe-luke.
Couple suggestions? Find a Siameseoid looking cat figurine somewhere (or gat one as bisque or greenware and have it painted/glazed to look as much like Bob as possible), or make a decal of a picture or drawing of Bob, and use any shape that pleases you as an urn. That's what I'm gonna do (the picture decal) if/when any of mine go, and I have the body for cremation (as opposed to just disappearing in the woods).

Presently, I have big black cat (5 years old) named Wizard.
The vet told me he is at LEAST half Siamese, if not three-quarters.
He has a big mouth (and will let you know when he feels you are not paying him the proper amount of attention), and when he gets in one of his "weird" moods, the (green) eyes cross and the ears go flat against his head.
Our other cat is 10 years old - the color of a Russian Blue (her NAME is Blue). She's a tiny thing and quiet.
Mostly, he is a big baby. Likes to kiss people on the nose.

Funny story here. When my first son was born, one of our cat had just died (no, I know that's not funny). Our houses was in the woods, mice were a problem, so we had to get another cat.
I was sitting in the rocking chair, nursing my baby, when my husband walked in with a Siamese! from the animal shelter. I had had many cats in my life--but a Siamese--with a baby!! All I could think of was the Lady and the Tramp and those obnoxious "We are Siamese, if you please" cats.
That said, Pussycat2 was one of the most wonderful cats I have ever had the pleasure to have know. She lived for 22 years and was the sweetest of cats. I loved her. Plus, they are very smart.

dread pirate - Oh well, thought I could pass him off as a cat, you're just too quick for me.
Kent - Me slow, thought that was your other half's name. I am working my way into the pack, but they will not teach me the secret paw-shake yet. I'll dig up some more stories on the "party dog" when I see some of my old gang. Unfortunately he is probably now in party dog heaven.

Peace.
Shaw Kenawe
(Joanne Kelley)
Wow. You beat me to every bit of it. ('Cept I've only been here for... dunno, since someone tried to sue Atrios and it hit Daypop?)
Anyway -- you guys are THE best and I would have felt entirely out-of-step and damn near isolated without you all, especially over the last several months. I learn so much and LAUGH so much here! Never thought the day would come when a page on the net would be so integral to my daily... thang. You pour your coffee, you pull up the papers, you come HERE. You wind down the day here. You watch a movie on TMC or HBO or something, then come here and find people commenting about it. It's weird and wonderful, and I'm eternally grateful -- grateful to A. for doing this in the first place, and grateful for you all. Can't single out anyone 'cuz I'd blow the Haloscan limit for sure.
(And Shaw Kenawe has "shocked and awed" me a second time: Yer a GIRL??? How do I MISS these things??? )

"Merry Something to everyone.
I wish I'd said that, but since I didn't, I'll repeat it. You guys have been an inspiration, a comfort, a source of excellent quotes, and a safe place to go. Many, many thanks. xoxo

Spinoza--
Actually I am going to change my handle. I took the name from a song by Greg Brown. I really liked it because it had these lines in it:
"The murderer who lived next door seemed like such a normal guy."
and
"I can't believe your hands and mouth did all that to me
Are so daily naked for all the world to see."
It really is a good piece of music, and I think he might be writing about Rexroth's daugher, or at least a woman of poetry who he longs for. I'm thinking of changing my name to Identity Crisis.

Silleigh - Ditto what you said.
I found this site around 8/02 when Howie or Andy referenced Atrios. I think Atrios' traffic was 6k hits a day. 25 comments use to be a pretty long thread, and about half the comments were by Tena, Pie, Cosmic, renato, Old Hat, or Meteor Blades. They all made me feel welcome. Ever since then, I get up in the morning with sleep in my eyes, and go straight here to see what I have missed while sleeping.
Kudos to all, and in the Eschaton spirit, Merry fucking Christmas!

GWPDA - Your a treasure trove of information, but I guess that goes with your history background (IIRC). I knew Akita's went back to guarding the Japanese emperors several thousand years ago, but did not know there were that many other breeds with equally or more illustrious heritage. I just wanted a big smart dog to guard my wife when I traveled, and ended up with much, much more.

Dread pirate--You weigh a cat by weighing yourself, then weighing yourself holding the cat.
Draco
And, don't forget to allow for blood loss, figured at approx 1 oz weight per oz liquid. Unless you lose enough to feel it, it won't put the cat's weight off by that much, so this is more for the real sticklers for accuracy among you.

OH yeah. That's the best combination. Carries the added bonus (How much would you pay? But wait! There's more!) of making God black. And the sheep: All black except for one white one. That way I can talk about someone being the "white sheep of the family." Damn youse, Monica. If it were NOT Christmas Eve and if I did not HATE shopping, I'd be outta here getting this together, just to see the look of utter respect in my munchkins' eyes when they wander over here on Christmas Day. Funny thing about the Oldest Breeds - there's some DNA evidence suggesting that Shar-pei and Chow-Chow are descended from bears - which is slightly troubling, but okay, I can stand it. However, the only thing I can tell that seems to unify them is that all of them, large and small, seem to have these really powerful haunches, as tho every bit of their strength and speed is right from there. Unlike mastiffs and wolfhounds and things with great big chests, or the all over sleekness of some others. Looking at Arthur, you think of 'small tank' but then, more closely.... Guy can make it across a 100' backyard in seconds. No staying power, but the devil in the sprints.

GWPDA - My wife (before we married) lived in Phoenix proper. She had this huge backyard. One day her and her roommate were sunbathing up close to the house when a sixteen or so year old boy jumped the fence in the far back corner and started running to the other back corner. Our (now deceased) Akita saw him and the boy started running faster. Within a second, the boy knew he was toast and turned on the afterburners. No such luck. He tried to do a header over the six foot fence and our Akita caught him in the butt. The dog covered about 50 yards in a few seconds.
We figured he was running from a burglary because he never came back to complain. But yeah, the haunches are something else. BTW, Akitas were first used (according to the Akita book) to hunt bear in Japan.

God must be black, from the optics pov. Black is the absorbtion of all color, the reduction of all refraction to no refraction. Black is the one 'color.' White radiates all colors: they are there in spectra. Black is the one spectrum, it is the antithesis of spectrum, in fact...

chris/tx - That's why I have an 8' back fence.... These Ancient breeds are interesting in that none of them are attack dogs, tho they're often treated that way. They're -watch dogs-. They watch and they report, and they only take action if their Person is believed to be at risk. All of that requires tremendous, split second judgement and intelligence.
Normally Arthur greets people at the door by baring his teeth and daring me to let go his collar. This afternoon, a little woman oldish neighbor stopped by, and you never in your life saw such a milksop doggie, even letting her put her face very near his. He makes decisions. But I'd hate like hell to try outrun him.

I wonder what my dog will say at midnight. Maybe something like my 5-year-old nephew announced at preschool, "President Bush has made a lot of mistakes."
My dog's a farm dog who looks to be part border collie, maybe some German shepperd, who knows what else. But he's a very handsome guy and looks like he ought to be some kind of breed. So to the frequent question of what he was, we took to answering a Konza shepperd because he was born in the Flint Hills around Manhattan, Kansas, near the Konza Prairie preserve. I told that to some kids this fall and one little girl said:
"Konza shepperds are so pretty."

YAY! I'm getting the 16-year-old munchkin for the evening! They did Christmas early at their dad's! The older one will be off raising hell somewhere.
And I bought like six DVDs today at the 3/$25 bin on the way home from work-- she'll be pleased. She wants to see Angels in America (that's good for Christmas Eve, right? ) and I've got it on discs now. Happy happy joy joy... 'Course she'll probably make me put in Shrek 2, when I rented the first 3 discs of Carnivale for the weekend to get ready for the January season.
(Sorry, just hadda share... I love catblogging threads, they're like this amazing extended visit with friends.)

Silleigh,
I thought that it might have been cause of confusion, and you are correct, I am a manbot.
Glow girl is the name of a great but not so well known song by the Who, and Steve Simels and I kinda bonded over the tune one thread a while back, so occasionaly bust that one out, and occasionally go by memebot, and Provider Two (or one or three if Dave is using Two) So there you have it.
The artist previously known as part is actually a hat tip to incogs new thang, and with Konopelli going with WGG almost full time, well you get the idea.

Glowgirl, thank you for clearing that up. Just wasn't sure, suddenly. (Steve is kind of a hoot, ain't he?)
WTH, several of us female-types apparently have guy-sounding names -- and then I *assume." See, all that time I had a mental pic of Shaw Kenawe being of some elegant, exotically African descent, not someone with a pun handle -- and, until tonight, MALE.
And with "Incog's new thang," I can't DO it without cutting & pasting, he has to have posted in the vicinity for that to be possible, so I am often tempted now to just call him Face.

Kent ... it started out as one little rabbit my wife found one morning she was running papers. We go another one to keep him company, and the vet was absolutely certain that it was a male too ...
Suddenly the origins of "breeding like rabbits" was brought to life right before our eyes.
Had I been living in the states I'd sued the shit out of that vet

Kent, yup. Except for one male which we keep locked up in a safe in our basement ... well almost, at least.
We should've done that from the start of his life though, 'cause when a rabbit's got to do what a rabbit's got to do it takes an awful lot of wire fence to stop him.
I guess we opted for a quality that wasn't up to the job. It really is rather incredible what a rabbit can chew it's way through when the sex drive, and the reward(s) on the other side of that fence, is big enough :-;

Well, I'm giving up for the night, having just discovered that the job that I was outsourced from by two different big companies (sold with job from one company to the other, other company outsourced job) is now being made available thru my local IT contracting company at $5 or so less an hour than two years ago when it was no longer critical. Hell, it was always critical, and I was always the person who could do it - but now the original company is having the damnedest time finding someone to fill it. Something about requiring 15 years experience I expect - which kind of lets out your recent DeVry grad. Ah me.
Arthur's asleep, MBA GWPDA too, and this household is tucking up for the night, under our hard freeze alert.
Try to listen to your animals tonight. Merry Christmas.

Cass, I was thinking the same as well.
Sill,
I should have remembered, you mentioned the visiting youngster earlier, but the brain is on a walkabout for the time being.
I don't think I would want to be in the translation business, not like that anyway. I would not mind helping make the Chinese translations more readable as far as assembly or other instructions are concerned.
I could have been of assistance when they were finishing the mold that would cast thousands of Lock ring wrenches and kept them from reading Rock Ring
That said glad you are enjoying yerself, Watching an old Bond Flick and listening to tunes myself. And just cracked a cold one, working on the paranoia, Not so bad after all.
GWPDA good evening.

That said glad you are enjoying yerself, Watching an old Bond Flick and listening to tunes myself. And just cracked a cold one, working on the paranoia, Not so bad after all.
GWPDA good evening.
Ole,
your killing me.

Also, would it be heresy to admit that I have thus far failed to emulate my editor and develop a taste for Hennessy, but have found that it drowns nicely in eggnog?
Silleigh
Yep, I've found cognac and rum together in eggnog to be delicious.

"the Akita, the Malamute, the Samoyed, and the Siberian husky are very lupine dogs. They are all far-northern dogs"
My next door neighbor has a dog which is half Malamute, half Keeshond.
His name is Mieke. He looks like a wolf.
Sweetheart of a dog!

For the dog fans out there, here's a cute as hell pic of one of our canine house guests a Boston Terrier named Dolly

I've got a brindle Boston Terrier named Bonzo, who will be 15 at the end of January.
I also have a 14 year old Papillion/Terrier/Sheltie mix named Duffy. She doesn't know she's an old dog!

I've always felt that Danny Glover would make a fine Santa Claus. Maybe if they do another remake of Miracle on 34th Street.

Terry C,
The boston's are something else, Dolly has lots of little games, i think she's near abouts 3 or 4 years young. Duffy sounds like a keeper, that mix might be pretty good for longevity.

GWPDA -
heh! Only one of mine knows about D-O-G-S, and of course both of them can't figure out why anyone would willingly subject themselves to W-A-T-E-R, but they're not reading these comments so I think I'll just keep that page a secret from them until they're ... older. Or something.

"Bell, Book and Candle" - yes, indeed!

Actually, it's way older than that...it's from an Elizabethan book on identifying witches (Malleus Maleficarum?).
There's an illustration of a witch with her 3 familiars: their names are Pyewackett, Grizzl'd Greedigut, and Vinegar Tom.

We have four kitties. They are attack kitties. Some times we give them small animals, like dogs. But they prefer the medium ones like elk and bison.
My mother talks about her Boston Terrier, Dolly who she had when she was about eight. She wanted one two years ago but the pound only had a fox terrier mix who is not nearly as calm as she remembers but who is, at the very least, never boring.

Such lovely blue eyes! I miss my Siamese. If I ever break down and get another cat, it'll be one of those. Sparky (so named because we rescued him as a stray kitten from off a car engine) was a cat with a boatload of personality. Although it was rough travelling with him, as he developed the habit as a small kitten of sitting behind my neck while I was driving... this became a problem when he became a rather large adult cat. Then there was the habit he developed of sharping his claws on a cinderblock...

Love the Santa and the kitties. We used to have all sorts of animals around here. Cats, dogs, horses, rats (pet ones), a tarantula, praying mantids, wolf spiders, lizards, geckos, snakes, etc. You name it we had it. Almost all have passed on so we are left with just one fish, the tarantula, and one dog. Mary, the tarantula, will live the longest approximately 25 years and is the cheapest, least intrusive, and most talked about pet we have. Kids liked the cats, rats, and horses, but at school meetings their parents would ask me if we really had a tarantula in the house.
It was great fun to see the repair guys studiously avoid the computer room or the upper hallway where her glass cage is usually kept. One of the workers asked me to remove her from the upper floor of the house he was so terrified. I was feeling sort of put out so I reached in and picked her up (not something I usually do), he squealed (a 220 lb, 6'2" guy can REALLY squeal) and flew down the steps. I felt bad about it, put her back in her cage and stuck that in my bedroom closet. He told me I had to shut my bedroom door or he wouldn't come up to fix the ceiling.
