Very true and wonderfully anti semitic as well, but he did at least realize that if his workers could not afford the cars, he would not be in business long, but aside from that a real sick piece of work.

I am scheduled to be Santa at a Christmas party tonight; in an hour or so I gotta harness the reindeer.
A couple of weeks ago i had a mini-epiphany (the banality of the obvious?): We are a community, here for each other, as much as anything else. Allow me to leave you tonight, --whatsoever it means to you-- with my profoundest thanks for 1) being here, 2) being smart, literate, funny and sophisticated, and 3) letting me play. It means the fucking world to me...and i am immensely grateful...

Here's a funny story, if you're involved with Great War/small wars history and otherwise, is just fairly tiresome. However, if Atrios can bring up Morgenthau I can certainly bring up AJ Balfour.
Henry Ford, because of his 'principles', by 1918 absolutely refused to sell any Ford trucks to the British - who needed them desperately because (1) most of the Rolls Royce armoured cars and vehicles that could be produced were in Arabia or floating around with Oliver Locker-Lampson and (2) they were in the process of moving a column from Basra up to Baku in order to take control of both the communication nexus point nearby and the Baku oilfields, which were already in dispute after the collapse of Russia. As I say, Ford absolutely refused, and even as AJ Balfour tried desperately to persuade Wilson to persuade Ford, nothing was getting those trucks any closer to hand. Whilst the British column was being put together, the reports on the various Armenian massacres (which see Morganthau's Report) were also coming to Balfour's attention - and as it happened covered much the same physical ground that the Dunsterforce was moving thru on their way north. With that, Balfour, in a meeting of the War Cabinet (dutifully recorded) proposed that the Government should go to Wilson with a somewhat new story - that the trucks were desperately need for Armenian famine relief and that only the pureness and Christian charity of Henry Ford could save (wait for it) the starving Armenians.
It worked. The trucks were shipped, they were used to move the column north, the Armenians of course kept right on starving, and so is propaganda made.

I always tell that story to illuminate the long-lived nature of propaganda, often quite in unexpected areas. Everyone who ever was told to eat everything on your plate because of the starving Armenians, raise your hand please....
Henry Ford really is the exemplar of what a horribly lax education can create. I used to think about him when dealing with quite delightful nerds whose absolute ignorance outside of technoland was scary.

Can't find any Christmas Cards...
Make your own - I'm sure Martha Stewart could give a great workshop making cards from pinecones and leaves and household items How long does Martha have to stay in jail? I thought it was great when Tommy Chong was released. He was on Leno and he was really funny. Of course, he was incarcerated for such an odd thing, someone must have been gunning for him.

Ya know, we can blame the wingnuts all we like but it is the leadership of a country that allows and encourages this to happen so they divide and conquer and do anything they want. It was the protestants and the catholics--the north and the south of Germany, pre WWII that were encouraged and helped to foment the German people and change the mindset to being that of victims in order that they would destroy their enemies--especially the jews but many didn't excape their evil.
It is totally irresponsible, deliberate, and planned for years--pre governorship Texas that religion be what elected this guy and kept him in office. I call it criminal for a leader to stir up the people like this "Libruls Eat Little Baby Jesus War", "Libruls are bad and immoral", they are doing. There is no way this guy is a real Christian unless it is the part where he thinks he is God.
When does somebody in the main stream media actually come out and say that George is starting a religious war in our own country.

growing up in Henry Ford's hometown i had never heard anything but wonderfulness about him until i was in my 20's. it devastated me and asked my aunt about him cos she had roomed with his cousins daughter. now she as liberal as any feisty 84 year old woman who was woman's libber before they came up with that term and taught education in Ann Arbor most of her career. she replied that most people were anti-semitic back then and Ford was product of his culture. she also many people were ignorant of the fact that Jesus was Jewish. Oy!

waiting - I'm afraid that sorta has to be modified to 'most people were antisemetic' in your hometown. On the other hand, certainly Henry Ford brought a rare quality of bigotry to American thought and life, taking the casual gentleman's agreement form of race hatred to a level otherwise not really encountered. I mean, there weren't a great many people who actually had their bigotry pandered to by both the United Kingdom and the United States in order to gain control of Asia Minor and the Baku oilfields.... Well, the Kaiser too, but that was sorta different.
Ah, the Midwest. Personally, I've always preferred Hays, KS, home to Walter P. Chrysler. Who got the hell out of it as soon as the Dodge boys.

As usual, the wingnuts will destroy that which they hold dear (or claim to, anyway). They're making such a disgusting display of hatred over Xmas that I'm just about ready to disengage from it entirely, and it looks like I'm not alone. Just like they're destroying democracy, freedom, compassion and the Golden Rule. Ben franklin knew that the right wing would be the downfall of this grand experiment, and he was prescient. We can only reverse this horrible trend if the Ohio vote is counted, the Florida vote is counted, and the assholes that disenfranchised thousands of voters and rigged electronic machines are jailed, along with the upstanding governor of Connecticut, John Rowland (R). Then we can send Georgie and his Manson Family values to the Hague, in the company of his Official Torturers and Brownshirted, Brown-nosed lackeys the Neocons. Hang the bunch of them, and let's get back to our country, not some religious theocratic plutocracy. We are making 3rd worlders look civilized.

I, too, wanted to add my best wishes to all, and thanks to all for allowing me the pleasure of finding intelligence in a world hell-bent on stupidity.
Thoughts on this night go to the Gentle figure of Christ who has been perverted by those "Christians" who would substitute hate for love and intolerance for understanding. My fervent hope is that the Rapture finds you before the throne of the Almighty trying to explain your intolerable hatred and terrible deeds.
Whatever your beliefs (Which really and truly are NONE of my damned business) I hope you find your way to the inner peace we all seek.

If people wanted religious xmas cards the free market would provide them, as the free market does all wondrous things and good.
If there are none to be had, it must be because they are unwanted.
Why is it that libbruls can't understand this, no matter how loud you scream at them or how persistently you whine?

Merry Christmas morning to y'all.
GWPDA, you're gonna make me stop in at the Armenian Library of the US whenever I decide to tie up a few things in Boston.
And it's one thing to hold racist attitudes, still negative, and another to publish racist screeds nationally and fund national publications that are racist (eg Ford or the Regnery empire).
(Then there is a special place in Hell for those practicing Glennuendo over their support for racist screeds like Malkin's concentration camp apologia.)

one other thing that bugs me all about this Jesus is the reason nonsense. no he is not. this season was being celebrated before Jesus, and the whole thing was never mentioned by Jesus growing up or for that matter did his mother go around telling people about her specialness.
all i can see and hear is the mother from life with brian which i had never seen until the passion came out and i didn't want any part of that. we celebrate Jesus showing us the light around here. so MERRY XMAS!

one other thing that bugs me all about this Jesus is the reason nonsense. no he is not. this season was being celebrated before Jesus, and the whole thing was never mentioned by Jesus growing up or for that matter did his mother go around telling people about her specialness.
all i can see and hear is the mother from life with brian which i had never seen until the passion came out and i didn't want any part of that. we celebrate Jesus showing us the light around here. so MERRY XMAS!

I recall hearing that Ford later renounced his anti-semantics to a certain degree. And Benjamin Franklin was never president. He just discovered lightening. Later ther Right brothers improved on his invention and made things light enough to fly. Edison discovered the light bulb, which was so light it would float away if not screwed in by ten Polacks.

and son of a gun we still have to eat Xmas dinner with some of them yet.
pity you. for me, no bush voter could stand to be around me for more than a half hour. surely one of us would throw the first punch.
We have declared war on the left, and we're going to sue the hide off of everybody, everybody, who tries to inhibit the liberties of our children and our families from worshipping and honoring the Lord, as we in America are constitutionally allowed to do. Jerry Falwell
bring it on motherfucker. and sadly it is just this kind of bullshit ad hominem argument that leads to totalitarianism. power must be a bad ass drug. even better than jesus.

The real trouble with this quote is that Jerry is misleading his "followers" again and he knows it. The ACLU already does the hard work of defending freedom of religion in the US.

And so this is Christmas
And what have we done?
Another year over
And you've just begun
And so this is Christmas
I hope you have fun
Your near and your dear ones
Your old and your young
And so Merry Christmas
And a Happy New Year
Let's hope it's a good one without any fear
And so this is Christmas
The weak and the strong
The rich and the poor ones
Have waited so long
And so Merry Christmas
And a Happy New Year
Let's hope it's a good one without any fear
So Merry Christmas
And Happy New Year
Let's hope it's a good one without any fear
War is over if you want it
War is over if you want it
War is over if you want it
War is over if you want it
Wanted to check in on this day and wish everyone here the best of times where they may find them.
Happy Christmas everyone.

Then there was the year Bob had me trip nude, then tied my legs and arms to the bedposts so I was spread-eagled, and put a pillow over my head. I was so excited! What Christmas surprise did he have for me? He left the room and came back later with some things that he began arranging along my inner thighs, especially up against that beauty of a varicose vein, and then (oh it makes me moist even now), into me.
He finally took off the pillow. He had that smile on his face I knew from his IVing viagra. And his
clawed pensil was twitching something fierceful. I smiled at him and look down. And there, the dear man had arranged an entire creche in my crotch. The three wise men, the donkeys, Joseph and Mary, a few GI Joes.... and there, against my throbbing labia, was the baby Jesus. And it was not just a toy. It was a battery-powered Jesus dildo fresh from the Jerry Falwell Christian Dildo factory in Lynchburg VA.
Well, I leave it to another time to tell you the rest of that Christmas eve. But let me just say that there was so much santorum we had to spend half Christmas morning canning and freezing it.

Nearly every year about this time, I end up in the computer room. My wife's family gets together at my sister-in-laws. She is a lovely person but also a cat owner and though I like cats, I am allergic as hell to them. I can usually only last a few hours before I have to leave.
Two years ago this very evening I finally finished the book I had been working on. Sitting here this evening, I was rejoicing in the accomplishment again. (I need to write again, when you have finished, the feeling is good!) Still, Merry Christmas to all and a happy second anniversary to my book: SILENT SCREAMS OF A SURVIVOR - a really amazing story of a Polish Catholic boy surviving the Holocaust.

Easter they will have the same difficulty in finding Easter cards that contain any suggestion that Easter commemorates a certain event. There will be rabbits and eggs and spring flowers, but a hint of the Resurrection will be hard to find. Now,,,,
excuse me if i'm wrong, but are not rabbits, eggs, and spring flowers precisely hints of resurrection?
christians, appropriation, is postmodernism for real? tradition is good, brings people together. traditions is bad, it divides people. the more things change, the more they stay the same.
and from the head jew "he not busy bein' born is busy dyin'" merry christmas to everyone, or whatever else you say, whatever it is it's fine by me, just don't try to legislate it.

Re: Liddy jilted bebe.
Sorry, worked at a mall from 8AM to 5PM today, ran over to inlaws for 3 hours, avoided whole church/sit around talking about work-thing by taking 1 1/2 year-old daughter home, kicked off boots, cracked open a Genesee Cream Ale (in the returnable 16-ounce bottle), and came here. Then I read that line and it went round and round in my head until I was giggling like a little kid.
Gimme a bit to catch up...
And, bebe, your obsession is as staggering as it is profane. Good job!

Lately I have been reading the gnostics. I am especially interested in unraveling the philosophies of Theodotus, Ptolemaeus, Heracleon, Florinus, and Marcus. What does it mean to be a Christian? Can I believe that Manichism is a heresy? But last night, with a gag-ball in my mouth, and trussed up like a pig at a Nazi-Polynesian bake-out, my legs painfully pulled apart by the jaws of life, and completely covered with Mirale Whip, senators trying to get erections to probe me, I had an epiphany. Jesus is my savior! It so scared the hell of out me that my labia quivered (Bob liked that). Last night, as I moved against that cute hairless turkish boy I decided then that I had to do something important in the world. I would ship as much santorum as possible to Biafra and other needy nations.

When does somebody in the main stream media actually come out and say that George is starting a religious war in our own country.
He didn't start it. It's been going for nearly 25 years at this point.
What you're hearing now is the death scream of the dinosaurs.

I was talking with a stranger the other night. (A lady about my age - mid fifties) I was complaining, as I am wont to do, about the piss poor president and his ill-begotten war. She sighed and said, "People our age have seen this all before - and we hated it the first time." To these ends, let me offer some lyrics from that strange and wonderful time. Steve Miller says, "I told you ’bout living in the u.s. of a.
Don’t you know that I’m a gangster of love
Let me tell you people that I found a new way
And I’m tired of all this talk about love
And the same old story with a new set of words
About the good and the bad and the poor
And the times keep on changin’
So I’m keepin’ on top
Of every fat cat who walks through my door
I’m a space cowboy
Bet you weren’t ready for that
I’m a space cowboy
I’m sure you know where it’s at
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
I was born on this rock
And I’ve been travelin’ through space
Since the moment I first realized
What all you fast talkin’ cats would do if you could
You know, I’m ready for the final surprise
There ain’t no way around it
Ain’t nothing to say
That’s gonna satisfy my soul deep inside
All the prayers and surveyors
Keep the whole place uptight
While it keeps on gettin’ darker outside
I’m a space cowboy
Bet you weren’t ready for that
I’m a space cowboy
I’m sure you know where it’s at
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
I see the show downs, slow downs, lost and found, turn arounds
The boys in the military shirts
I keep my eyes on the prize, on the long fallen skies
And I don’t let my friends get hurt
All you back room schemers, small trip dreamers
Better find something new to say
Cause you’re the same old story
It’s the same old crime
And you got some heavy dues to pay
I’m a space cowboy
Bet you weren’t ready for that
I’m a space cowboy
I’m sure you know where it’s at
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah

You'd BETTER tell me you have the Mr. Hankey Christmas special on tape, PLUS the album.
On (secondhand) DVD. We try not to traffic in pirated media around here; we know too many songwriters.
Personally, I've never really gotten into the talking turd thing, myself, but I do enjoy the Cartman family singing "Hark, the Herald Angels Sing" to Charles Manson.

If the meaning of the holidays is about finding fellowship among family and friends, about finding unity in the face of indifference, and in holding hope for peace in a hostile world, then perhaps I've found a little bit of those things here. Thanks all.

njpineygal:
The story is fascinating. I gave one to my doctor the other day and he had the same reaction. I told him that while the story is dreadful, it is also uplifting to find that people have an inner strength that is simply amazing. And while the book could have been moribund, I tried my best to not make it so. If you are truly curious, go to the Amazon.com site and read the reviews posted there. (They make me blush, but they are also reassuring concerning the book's content.) My publisher was impressed enough to submit it for a Pulitzer. So, while saying your prayers (or whatever it is that you do when you send thoughts away from you to the great Beyond) some night, remember Mitch and his story: it is a truly important one. Mitchell is living in near poverty in Toledo. After surviving the Holocaust he ended up being drafted into the Korean Conflict. He served as a medic and was awarded Two Silver Stars, a Bronze Star, a Distinguished Service Cross, a Purple Heart, and was nominated for the Congressional Medal of Honor. At this time he is 73 years old and a cancer survivor living alone and fighting both poverty and depression. He truly needs something nice to happen for him.

Oldwhitelady,
My sister's husband, who is also Polish and living in Toledo, gave me the manuscript that Mitch had tried to write. Mitchell is one hell of a man, but he is not a writer. Three other writers had been approached to help with the project, but they declined or failed. (Never quite got that straight.) I took the twenty three thousand words he had written and turned my "writer's eye" on them and expanded them to about 70,000 words. I sent each chapter to Mitch and his friend via email, and they made corrections as needed. Then I proceeded. Two years ago on Christmas night, about this time, I typed THE END. It was an amazing experience as writing for me is a visceral experience: I actually felt his pain while writing.
The thing I am most proud of about the book is that it is a book that truly reflects the cost of war on ordinary people. If you remember correctly, Chimpy McWarhardon was gearing the news media and the country up for this misbegotten war. I could not think of a worse idea after this experince. I hope everyone who reads it realizes that fighting is what we do when we have no other choice. It is not the first resort, it is the last.

Thank you - That was exactly what I wanted to know. I sometimes wish I could ask a writer why they wrote something and how they made the words work out the way they did. I'm FINALLY back home after running around like a mad thing all day, and just wanted to say "Merry Christmas" and so forth to all y'all.
Let nothing you dismay, as the song says...

Thank you, Oldwhitelady.
When I was working on the book with all of the dreadful things that happened to Mitch and his family, I finally lost it on this passage. It is not the saddest part of the book, but it really put Christmas in perspective. As I wrote, I had to clear the tears. Here is an excerpt.
"When Christmas came, my mom and dad took our family to Midnight Mass. We stayed in the church until daylight with many of our friends and neighbors singing carols and praying. The importance of the church in these bad times cannot be underestimated. The church was full night and day during the Christmas season. It truly did seem a place of sanctuary from an oppressive world.
We came home early in the morning, and mom fixed us kasza for breakfast. The cereal was warm and tasted good. Christmas was peaceful even though we didn’t have a Christmas tree or enough to eat. I knew that I could get used to this peaceful and joyous time. My mom sang Christmas songs as we all sat in the living room. Even Andrew and Sophie listened intently. It was such a special time that I will never forget it. It is still with me now.
My mother had set up a picture of the Madonna holding the Christ child and had a candle burning there during the entire Advent season. As she sang, I prayed to the Virgin to deliver my family from this dreadful war. And even though Christmas could have been more special, we realized that having us together and safe was something worth appreciating.
The time following Christmas was peaceful. If we were still hungry, we were less so than a year ago. Our family was together, and the shock of the air raid that killed so many had worn off, and our grieving was near completion. For a while I almost forgot this dreadful war. There were occasional flashes of the sadness and hatred I had witnessed, but I was managing to put these down. Every day I thanked the Lord for still being alive and being with my family."

We need Antichrist cards!
Elaine Supkis
With Georgus Christ on them.
This stuff is so much in the mouths of Republican shills this year that it can not be unorganized. It is just part of their attempted theft of Christianity. Their message is that Jesus belongs to Republicans, just as everything else does.
Where are the liberal Christians on TV, Radio, in the major print sources? Scarcer than democratic socialists. No, just as scarce as, as in just not asked to be on.
Real Christians, liberal Christians have to raise a general and sustained effort to force their voices to be heard. And I don't mean the three sentences in a five minute story that NPR gives them. They must assert themselves as the voice of real Christianity in opposition to the "christian" frauds who are in no sense of the word followers of Jesus' teachings.
Non-Christians must assert their rights too. They can begin by pointing out the bigotry of the "christians".
If we don't act effectively now we can look forward to a theocratically veneered corporate oligarchy for the rest of our lives.

My submission for the poetry contest:
You go to war with what you have
and if you’re wounded, apply some salve.
The docs will get you back on your feet
so all the enemies you can meet
will try to kill you again.

FeralLiberal,
LMAO, short answer, none.
Long answer, I am a cat wrangler extraordinaire, or you might call me a cat whisperer. There was the mysterious Cat man in my neighborhood, who had a boatload of cats and some of them might follow him during his various constitutionals. One morning on the way to elementary school, I coaxed one out from the bushes and catman cleared the hill and after the shock wore off, explained that I was petting a cat that he had yet to lay hands on.
Don't get me wrong, I still have an inventory of scars -- hubris is a bitch.

Freezing here in GR ~ 7 degrees.
I wanted to say hi, even though I'm shivering. And to wish you all a Merry Christmas.
This is a wonderful community ~ thanks again for the support over the last year.
My Christmas Wish is simple:
Peace on Earth, Good Will Toward All.
And I mean ALL.
I'm off to smoke some weed. The peace pipe. Bush should try a toke every now and then, maybe he'd see things differently.

Kent, thanks for the kind words...!
Yeah, I'm thinking we're in good shape. We have the rye, the wheat, the cranberry orange, and the cherry breads ~ all made from scratch. A batch of chocolate fudge. Chex mix with Cheerios, not those awful bagel chips. Spinach dip. Ingredients for crab cakes prepped...It'll be a real retro Christmas this year.
And more tomorrow, but it's fun.
May you have a very, very wonderful day of celebration!

Someday at Christmas men won't be boys
Playing with bombs like kids play with toys
One warm December our hearts will see
A world where men are free
Someday at Christmas there'll be no wars
When we have learned what Christmas is for
When we have found what life's really worth
There'll be peace on earth
Someday all our dreams will come to be
Someday in a world where men are free
Maybe not in time for you and me
But someday at Christmastime

US strategy 'based in fantasyland'
Dan Glaister in Los Angeles
Thursday December 23, 2004
The Guardian
America's handling of the occupation of Iraq came in for scathing criticism yesterday, with government officials accused of living in a "fantasyland" and failing to learn from mistakes made in Vietnam. A report issued by the independent Centre for Strategic and International Studies charged that the occupation had been handled by "ideologues" in the Bush administration who consistently underestimated the scale of the problems they were facing and this had contributed to a culture in which facts were wilfully misrepresented. The report lists a litany of errors on the part of the US.
"Their strategic assessments of Iraq were wrong," it says. "They were fundamentally wrong about how the Iraqi people would view the United States invasion. They were wrong about the problems in establishing effective governance, and they underestimated the difficulties in creating a new government that was legitimate in Iraqi eyes. "They greatly exaggerated the relevance and influence of Iraqi exiles, and greatly underestimated the scale of Iraq's economic, ethnic, and demographic problems."
The report lays responsibility for these errors with the policymakers in Washington. "The problem with dealing with the Iraqi army and security forces was handled largely by ideologues who had a totally unrealistic grand strategy for transforming Iraq and the Middle East," the report says. Under the heading "Denial as a method of counter-insurgency warfare", it notes that the US "failed to honestly assess the facts on the ground in a manner reminiscent of Vietnam".
But there was a rare attempt at honesty in the Pentagon yesterday when the defence secretary, Donald Rumsfeld, said he was "truly saddened" that anybody might think he did not care about US soldiers.
"Their grief," he said, "is something I feel to my core." American efforts to rebuild Iraq received a further blow yesterday when it was revealed that one of the leading US contractors in the region, Contrack International, was pulling out. The decision to scrap its $325m (£170m) contract to rebuild transport in frastructure was prompted by rising violence and related security costs, the company said. The decision marks the first time that a prime contractor has decided to leave Iraq.
"The security environment is not always permissive to doing the kind of work that they were trying to do," a Pentagon spokesman said. Contrack was supposed to construct new roads, bridges and transportation terminals in Iraq.
But it wound up only refurbishing a handful of train depots, reported the Los Angeles Times. Construction sites came under small-arms and mortar fire, and, earlier this year, an Egyptian driver working for the company was kidnapped by insurgents. His body was found 12 days later, with five bullet holes to the head.

I swiped a friend's candle at work she kept on her desk and String and me are just chilling. I fried some bacon last night and I noticed when I got off, some of the bacon greese in the pan, about half of it had been eaten. I hope he doesn't get sick on the carpet from eating so much greese. We both like bacon and eggs, too.

There's an interesting book out about Henry Ford by Neil Baldwin, Henry Ford and the Jews. Its quite good and an interesting read. Its amazing how you hear the same rhetoric today you heard back then.
As the war in Iraq gets uglier we're going to hear more of it from the right than the left as they try to blame the whole snafu on the "dual loyalties" of the neo-cons. That way w and his petty revenge on Poppy and Cheney's Halliburton windfalls can slide by unnoticed.
Mark my word, that's what we're going to start hearing any day now. Those horrible Jews tricked our fearless leader w into this horrible mess.

Considering that the late-December celebration was simply co-opted from several other faiths, Henry Ford's ingorance is even more profound. As they say, Mithras is the reason for the season...
As for Easter, that, too, was a pagan celebration subsumed by the Church to gain conversions. The rabbits and eggs came from that tradition. Perhaps if he were intellectually curious in any way, he might have investigated the connection of rabbits and eggs to Easter.
So what was that fetid Nazi bitching about anyway? He doesn't even comprehend some basic disinformation about his own religion, so why should anyone care what he (or his ideological descendants) think?

This is exactly why I said in another post that we should administratively relocate Jeebus' b-day to some other day of the year, and keep our annual spendfest under a new (or, better yet, older) name. I think I'm going to start celebrating Hogwatchnight, personally. I'd love having the Hogfather come and leave me a ham and a few strings of sausages.

I've already heard on CSPAN that the poor prez just received bad advice and it is not his fault, yada yada yada.
Also heard on CNN last night that Powell met with shrub and told him the military needed more men on the ground. That evening the WH announced Powell would be leaving.

Ya know..... I always wondered about people with those long ass driveways. We had maybe 100 yards of one as a kid. That was plenty to snowblow with the tractor. The little hill at the top was a bastard to get over when icy too.
My step-Dad bought a 1909 John Deere GP tractor with steel lug wheels when I was around 9 or so. It was really cool. Had a flywheel that you spun with your hands to start the thing. You had to flip the compression valves open to start it - once it fired, you had to flip them shut really fast.
We pulled alot of stupid people out of the ditch with that thing. And we managed to get where cars would not go with it also - like to the store for necessary items when blizzards and ice storms hit.
We bought a snowmobile soon after the tractor.

As long as everyone is all mushy and stuff, here is what Eschaton has meant to me.
I am one of those super efficient managers always looking at the bottom line. Practical to a fault. Y'all have worked with old battleaxes like me. I can see it, don't like, but there you have it. It is what I am. Then Shrub got selected. At first I thought, "How bad can it be, we survived Reagon and Nixon, this can't be worse." Well, as you all know it is worse, and getting more worse with every day that passes.
I really began to worry about myself. The dislike I feel for the current maladministration goes beyond anything I have ever felt before. I can get worked up to a full scaled rant in 30 seconds flat. Which is not like me at all. We spent some time with family last spring and every time there was a lull in the conversation, my brother-in-law would nudge his wife, grin, and throw out some tidbit about W. That would be it - I would go on for hours. It almost became a joke.
So being here, with some of the smartest people I have run across in years, authors, lawyers, musicians, reassures me that I am not crazy to be so upset with these people. It is a comfort to know that there is an entire community (and that is what we are) who shares the outrage.
Thank you all. Enjoy the day for what it represents, not for what the fundies claim. Joy to the world. Peace on earth.

Atrios,
MERRY CHRISTMAS to you and yours, the cats, and all.
Here's hoping that the drifting of the "Conservative Movement" into fascism is apruptly stalled on the reef of good sense, and Henry Ford is put back into his coffin.
Our troubles are now people like Scaife, Coors, Olin, Bradley and a number of others who seem to think Generalissimo Francisco Franco was on "the right track."
So, Merry Christmas Atrios.....even though this year it seems more like a movie on the order of "Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence."

I'm not depressed about it. Remembering what an asshole he was then is a gentle reminder of how good it is now.
He's still around drunker than a goat. Haven't spoken to him in years. Last time was ... out to the bar in the town where I grew up. One of my best friends was managing it at the time. I went out for breakfast one morning, and he happened to come in (to start drinking at 10:30 am). One of the guys there started ragging on me to say 'hi to my Dad'.
I casually walked over to him and told him rather loudly to mind his own fucking business, and that I didn't consider him my father... and if he said anything more about it I'd be happy to bust his fucking nose.
Needless to say, things got real quiet and the subject was dropped.

I slept through the class in my freshman year of college, and only studied enough to pass the class.
Now, more than ever, I feel the need to understand the mechanisms that seem responsible for all the actions of politicians, and history in general.
Any books, websites/forums, methods to recommend? I want to avoid taking the class again because I already passed it, and economics teachers aren't known for making their classes worth taking.

I'm well aware of mr. Atrios' qualifications. At this point however, a "small fee" is out of the question. That's why I'm only looking for pointers to sources I could study on my own.

I was over at Jesus General and he has a link to poetry contest where you have to use Rumsfield's quote “You go to war with what you have.”
oldwhitelady: I am not one of those good writers, but I decided to have some fun with it:
Fire in the hole, seventeen moles in a hole
Wackety, wack, wack
Onwards to Messopotamia,
taken in a stroll
Aluminum tubes and yellowcake
Incubators cold babies make
Attaboy! do not feel coy
Shoving it up the hoi polloi
This is nothing to abhor
For with what you have,
you must go to war
Now the purse is bleeding
Dissenters are seething
And on discontent
the soldiers are feeding

Barndog- i hear ya brotha, this is why I was on such a tear about the pharmacists thing yesterday where they can refuse to dispense medications they believe are immoral. How are cigarettes moral?
Cigarettes and smoking related causes kill 425,000 people a year. I'm not sure how many alcohol related deaths there are, but that seems morally correct too. These are drugs. Why is it ok for those to be dispensed, and not even via a prescription? Jebus, here I go again...

We do things so stupidly in murica that it has to be intentional. Now we are arguing on the media that all religious denominations need to have their special holidays and all the dumbshits are calling in to CSPAN.
In Europe they have winter holidays, spring holidays, and summer holidays and don't mention religion (as it should be here). Then we wouldn't have to listen to the blue ladies and friends, who couldn't find their assholes if they had a map, tell us this is a Klistian Nation all the time.
It is really enough to put one entirely off religion, Klistmas, and all things related to this wonderful culture of deception and BS. I don't even want to go outside anymore.

If you need a chance to do something nice, I might suggest sending a note to Father Greeley. Seems that some people have been spreading rumors that he is a defrocked priest rather a fine Christian man who believes the war we are fighting is immoral. (Along with the Pope, I might add) You can write him at: agreel@aol.com
You can read his latest column at:

"Why do I care what others' religious beliefs are? Unless their beliefs call for my death or enslavement, I say live and let live."
What if it calls for the teaching of it to your children in public schools? What if the lies put out by them helped to put in place an administration hell bent on the destruction of decent lives for Americans? I am happy to let them live but I hate their lies and ignorance that influence mine (and yours).

We got your rye, your wheat, your Parkerhouse rolls, and then for sweetbreads, I baked a wonderful cherry pecan bread, and my favorite cranberry orange bread. Take your pick.

this is a tough day for me for some reason.
the holidays are stressful. we put such pressure on ourselves to be "merry," that if we're not feeling that way, we're somehow failing.
I say, fuck 'em! Break out the pipe, the bong, the bottle, the coffee, whatever your personal vice of choice. Lift a glass to the world and say: "Hey! Bite me! Merry day!"
Then take a nap.

Here's a Christmas horoscope for you (I'm a Virgo, but the first part applies across the zodiac):
Christmas Day sees Mars entering Sagittarius, making for a lighter mood all afternoon and a sentimental time tonight for all signs of the zodiac. Avoid breakable items as much as possible; this is not the best day for the survival rate of fragile items, egos included.

I'll just tell my dad, "Big rolls for big men."
I guess Jews would think this was especially funny -- the first time I made matzoh ball soup, I didn't realize that you had to make the matzoh balls really small, because they expand.
Needless to say, when I took the lid off the stockpot, the matzoh balls had absorbed ALL of the liquid and had taken on the shape of the pot. It was a giant matzoh cylinder.
My boyfriend laughed his ass off at my expression.

waatertiger -- sounds like me and pizza. First time I ever made it was , god, back in a home-ec class thirty years ago . The second time, at home, I figured that twice as much crust on the same type of pan would be "deep-dish style". Instead I ended up with The Accidental Foccacia, except I didn't know then that's what it was called, so it was just The Pizza Frisbee.

Pine Lake, watertiger, comin' up!
Love your matzoh ball story! I love to cook and bake, but it is truly learning by experience. One time, when I was silly and in my youth, I thought I'd take the easy route to toasting a corn tortilla shell for a tostada. I put it in the toaster. Started a kitchen fire. I didn't think it would, burn, honest.
filkertom, it is frickin' freezing here, too. I don't have a choice. Christmas is my mom's favorite time of year, and out of respect to her, I must go visit them, even in a blizzard. Mmmmmm, Christmas tacos! Happy Merry to the coolest cat in Ann Arbor!

People here in the Northeast panic during any sort of snow event. After the blizzard of 78, if the weather people say an inch of snow, you can't get near a grocery store.
You should see it here. They're forecasting *possibly* an inch of snow and sleet accumulation here on the MS Gulf Coast and you'd think they were forecasting the beginning of the next Ice Age.
Fucking sheep...
Anyway... you guys and ladies are all fantastic and I wish I could have bought you all a Fristmas present, but I couldn't. Deal with the disappointment.
Besides, I do Festivus... which is kind of bothering me at the moment because I don't really have any grievances to air with you people. However, for the Feats of Strength I choose Jenny From The Blog to wrestle me and she can't leave until I've been pinned...
Seriously... I wish all of you the best for the holidays.
I'm going to kill a wild turkey for dinner.

The first time I cooked a duck I assumed it would be just like cooking a chicken.
Chinese Turkey!!!!
Wild turkey is great... tastes good and no tryptophan-induced coma mid-afternoon... they're generally smaller than domesticated birds, too, so there's not an overabundance of leftovers to try to figure out different ways of dealing with.
BTW: My Christmas gift from my doctor was finding out that I have a bone spur on my 5th cervical vertebra and a herniated disc between C6 and C7.
Neck surgery... Merry Fucking Christmas.

Here's an interesting bit of Christmas Trivia:
Male and female reindeer grow antlers. The males lose theirs after the breeding period, usually in October/November. Females retain their antlers until after they give birth.
Since all of Santa's reindeer have antlers in late December, they must all be female.

Holy Shit! - how did you ever become so spectacularly misinformed?!!!
In just the month of May, all businesses and government offices close (à la Christmas) ONCE A WEEK for various CATHOLIC holidays. I forget the names of all of them, but at least one is 'The Assumption of Mary" and I think another one is "The Ascension of Christ." Then, say a week or two later in early June, everything's closed again for "Pentecost MONDAY." Oh, and all this follows on the heels of "Easter Monday."
And I'm not talking about Italy or Spain - I'm talking Germany, France and Austria (but you can add Italy and Spain to that list too - and there's others as well.)
Then, you gotta deal with the fact that the governments of those countries actively support the Catholic Church (financially - lots of big bucks), AND ONLY THE CATHOLIC CHURCH, the excuse being that Catholic structures are of "Historical Cultural Value to Society." So, do two hundred year old (or older) Protestant Churches get financially supported by those governments too? - not a penny! And don't even think of synagogues getting a penny of support, or Muslim Mosques, or Buddhist Temples....
But Europeans will be the first to crow that they have "Separation of Church and State" (like they're the ones who actually thought up, and first implemented that idea. They think the same about Social Security, which always gets me chuckling....)
I have European businessmen arguing with me in disbelief, that their governments do not support the Catholic Church, as that would violate their "Separation Clauses" So, when I point to their governments' own fiscal records, they immediately change the subject and start attacking America instead of sticking to topic.... It's that mature of them?
Oh yeah, use Europeans as your example of people who "have it all together!" Boy, THAT'S rich!
People who believe that, have never lived and WORKED in Europe for any length of time (1 year student-stints don't count for shit), or have their heads so far up their asses and are ideologically "true believers in the Europe-Religion", that they are willing to suspend all objectivity and are therefore no better than the Americans they revile for voting for Bush "no matter what."
You think the AMERICANS are stupid for voting for BUSH? (yes, I know that's kinda a rhetorical question...) Criminal investigations were ongoing involving Jacques Chirac during his last Presidential campaign. No one in France denies, that if he weren't re-elected, he would be in prison right now. Period. So what did the enlightened French do? They RE-ELECTED HIM!!! So, now as President of France again (and potentially for the rest of his life - there are no term limits), HE CAN'T BE TRIED WHILE IN OFFICE. And he's already arranged it, so

And he's already arranged it, so that he'll be pardoned by his successor!
Then, of course, there's always the example of Austria; I was told by that countries top, in-power, politicians in 1987, that the reason they voted for Kurt Waldheim in spite of his Nazi SS record of executions, etc. was because "America told us not to vote for him because he was a Nazi, so we voted for him to show America that we can make a Nazi our President if we want to."
Wow, CAN'T ARGUE WITH THAT LOGIC!
Oh yeah! Europeans are SOOOOO much wiser than our imbecile Redstate Americans!!!
Now, for a little Holiday wish for every self-proclaimed "progressive, secular American" who ALSO thinks "Europe" is so consistently hip and "with-it" ON ALL FRONTS compared to the States:
I CURSE you this Christmas Day to have to live AND WORK in Europe for at least two years (and pay 78% of your quite modest earnings in taxes to support "European Social Programs," like I do.) Oh yeah, and that's "on the Continent " - and not with a foreign lover or spouse either! (who can otherwise influence your opinions by playing the emotional card).
You know how a lot of you get kicks listening to bebe comment on Liddy Dole's cavernous twat, or perhaps someone else's comical musings regarding "Chimpy", String fisting Magoo, or what not?
You know what really gets me laughing? People looking to Europe like "Yeah, now THEY really got their acts together..." "Yeah, we should be following THEIR lead."
Now THAT IS hilarious!!!!

Boy, I'm feeling a little dense. So all this religious right nonsense is STILL about the Jews, even though they appear to be targeting gays, athiests and, to a lesser extent, Muslims?

I was brought up in Northern New Jersey. I went to a Protestant Sunday school and both my parents are Christians.
But my senior thesis advisor in college and my therapist are both (liberal and extremely secular) Jews and both have had far more influence on the way I think than the minister in the church I went to as a kid. I've never practiced Christianity and I'm an atheist and a liberal. I'm pro-choice and against teaching "creation science" or "intelligent design" in public schools.
Am I culturally more Jewish or Protestant?
Or do these traditional categories mean very little?
Personally I think the religious division in America is not Jewish vs. Protestant vs. Catholic.
It's Vatican II Catholic/Mainline Protestant/Secular Jew vs. Evangelical Christian/Conservative Jew/Mel Gibson Catholic.
Now where all those Hindu and Muslim immigrants fit in I have no idea. But I'd feel safe saying that Pat Buchanan, Bill O'Reilly and William Donohue are traditional anti-semites who have adapted, that they hate me as much or more than they hate Conservative Jews because (for all intents and purposes) they see me as a Secular Jew. They think in terms of traditional anti-semitic categories but have included non-Jews in the mix.
Don't know if that makes any sense. It's not Jew = Liberal. It's "we're nostalgic for a pre-60s/pre Civil Rights/monocultural America".

Oh yeah! Europeans are SOOOOO much wiser than our imbecile Redstate Americans!!!
Plenty of bigots in Europe that's true.
But nobody quite stupid enough to want to see "intelligent design/creation science" taught in public schools.
And even the right in Europe is willing to deal with global warming.

caj--well, here's the thing. For a long time now Jews have been safe, and even participants in attacks on nonsafe minorities (especially evil shifty-eyed sodomites). Naturally the present is a result of what went before, but something new is happening: a previously existing decision to go after liberal Jews with standard anti-Semitism and spare and protect useful Jews (Zionists and the religious nuts) may be fragmenting, from sheer carelessness, in the new radio-based rightist ("red state") populism. Besides, even when the attacks were laughable hallucinations, attacks on Jews always received more attention anyway. Just returned from a "Jew School" thread in which people bemoan Nazi gold while not mentining any other Holocaust victims, like the Roma, who get to have a pig farm deliberately placed on a historical site important to them in Czechoslovakia. Imagine Germany putting a pig farm right on Belsen-Bergen. Nevertheless, look at the recent spate of Jew-targeting rightist bile (George Soros, Anal Xmas, "Jews did that", etc). Something is happening.

"second witness, re that one chirac point: le pen."
So what's your point? If you have a facism running against a criminal, those are the only two choices in a multiparty election? I don't understand...are you glibbly supposing there are only two choices in French elections?
"so does this mean you won't be going back to civilization when your red meat/state diet forced you to require modern medicine? or maybe you'll go to the birthplace of xmas: the PRC... "
Oh Hun, I was born 10 miles from the point where my ancestors boat came ashore exactly 400 years earlier. I'm from the bluest of the blue states. Come to think of it, my various ancestors were founders of most of the blue states. Don't project your "redstate mentality" (whether European or American) onto me.
However, I'm assuming you've actually had extensive experience with BOTH Continental medicine, and American Blue State medicine, as I have, because if you haven't THEN YOUR JUST TALKING OUT OF YOUR ASS about a subject you have no experience with, right?
Medicine in France? Fucking "Theodoric of York!"
I have a good friend who is a doctor in a bourgeoise city in Northern France. A few years ago I injured my arm - badly, and it was swollen pretty bad. He suggested prescribing 300mg of Ibuprofen to be taken 4 times a day. I told him to save his prescription, I was already taken 600mg 4 times a day of my own over the counter Ibuprofen from the States.
He looked at me speechless, and finally responded "I can only prescibe up to 1200mg per day by law in France." From that time onward, he wanted to know about other American medical practices (i.e. in the sense of "advancements.")
I was just in the hospital at Cannes the other day talking to a specialist regarding auto-immune diseases (my sisiter was diagnosed with Sjogrens.) He was salivating with excitement, and wanted to pick my brain about every way the Americans diagnose and treat a number of different auto-immune diseases (Sjogrens, Lupus, M.S., CMT, etc.)
Then I went in to have an MRI of my brain. Fucking Planet of the Apes!.... They were ready to put me in the machine full-well knowing my skull was full of metal, but without being sure if it was titanium or surgical steel.
When I said I was almost sure it was titanium, but some of the wiring could possibly be steel, the DOCTOR'S remark was, "well, it's your choice, I think you'll be ok"
Do you believe that!!!!!!!!!!!!! Do you have even an inkling of what would happen to my face inside an MRI machine if the wiring were steel? So, I asked the doctor if I could have is opinion in writing before I had the scan.
At first he didn't get it, then he laughed and responded, "this isn't America, if your injured (upon my false council), that's your problem!" He's right. I've seen a number of cases in France where people were gravely injured for life (or dead), and the judgements were in the $20,000 to *50,000 ra
