Guaranteeing a certain number of positions in government for certain ethnic groups is not without precedent, though. Lebanon, for example, has a power-sharing arrangement among its main sectarian groups.
I can't believe we've reached the point where we're looking at Lebanon as a model for Iraq. There are a few reasons for which Lebanon might not be the best model. Then again, I do think that a comparison between the two is very fruitful. Confessionalism did not work in Lebanon largely because the Christians (and particularly my kinsmen the Maronites) attempted to maintain power, largely through undemocratic means ("locking" the distribution of power in despite the shifting demographics of the country, deliberately neglecting censuses for the same reasons). If the Iraqi consitution provided checks and balances against these kinds of abuses, confessionalism might work.
Confessionlism is on its way out in Lebanon, and would probably have been abandoned long ago if not for the shaky political system in that country - a shaky political system that owes much to the deficiencies of confessionalism. Federalism is much more appropriate, IMHO.

"Imagine the bursting blood vessels on George Will's forehead if someone proposed instituting proportional racial representation, or even suggested interesting ideas to encourage more minority representation in government..."
That's actually not true. The Republican Party has, in the last decade or so, been a propoenent of 'majority minority districts'. Why? Because if enough democratic-leaning minority voters are grouped together in a district, that tends to make safe Republican districts elsewhere in the area.

Hey, remember that one of the goals of this Project in Democracy was to produce an Arabic Middle Eastern state that would be friendly to Israel.
If we're going to placate the Sunnis with proportional representation, we also need to make sure that pro-Israelis have a strong say in the new Iraqi government, even if they have to be imported or invented.
It would be only fair.
(An insane idea, to be sure. But I bet we could get some loonball Fighting Keyboarder to support it & make it a Crusade. After all, if you don't support insane plans for Middle Eastern nation building, you hate the Baby Jesus--and on His birthday, too!)

Merry Christmas to all

Proportional representation is also practised in India, the world's largest democracy. About 120 seats (of 545, I think) in India's parliament are reserved for weaker social sections (those who were considered untouchable). Over the last few years, there have been proposals to allot a fixed fraction of parliamentary seats to women, but (surprise, surprise) the
move has not yet gained enough parliamentary votes to be legislated.

Shiite politicians are willing to tell us anything we want to here to get to the elections because they know that they're going to win them. After that all bets are off cause then we'll have what is basically a Shiite superpower in the Gulf with Iraq and Iran. We could well end up losing both Kuwait and Saudi Arabia before this is over if they start to look outside they're respective countries for new converts and resources.

I just don't know how to satisfy people. For goodness sakes, the last time anybody checked, the Mesopotamians had their hearts set on a monarchy or at the very least, a US Mandate. (The King-Crane Commission Report, August 28, 1919:
Report of [the] American section of Inter-allied Commission of mandates in Turkey. An official United States government report by the Inter-allied Commission on Mandates in Turkey.)
American Section
"4. ...we recommend that the Government of Mesopotamia, in harmony with the apparent desires of its people, be a Constitutional Monarchy, such as is proposed for Syria; and that the people of Mesopotamia be given opportunity to indicate their choice of Monarch, the choice to be reviewed and confirmed by the League of Nations. It may be fairly assumed that the 1,278 petitions from Syrians for the independence of Mesopotamia-68.5 per cent of the total number received-reflects the feeling in Mesopotamia itself; and such contact as we have been able to secure with Mesopotamians confirms the assumption, and leads to the belief that the program, presented at Aleppo by representative Mesopotamians... would be generally supported by the Mesopotamian people....
...Now it seems so unlikely that America could or would take a mandate for Mesopotamia, in addition to the possible consideration of Syria and Asia Minor, that the Commissioners recommend that the Peace Conference assign the mandate for Mesopotamia to Great Britain: because of the general reasons already given for recommending her as mandatary in Syria if America does not go in there, because she is probably best of all fitted for the particular task involved, in view of her long relations with the Arabs; in recognition of the sacrifices made by her in delivering Mesopotamia from the Turks,....
These reasons make it probable that the largest interests of the people of Mesopotamia as a whole will be best served by a British Mandate, in spite of the fact that from the point of view of world-interests, in the prevention of jealousy, suspicion, and fear of domination by a single Power, it were better for both Britain and the world that no further territory anywhere be added to the British Empire. A British mandate however, will have the decided advantage of tending to promote economic and educational unity throughout Mesopotamia and Syria whether Syria be under Great Britain or America-and so will reflect more fully than ever before, the close relations in language, customs, and trade between these parts of the former Turkish Empire.
In a country so rich as Mesopotamia in agricultural possibilities, in oil, and in other resources, with the best intentions there will inevitably be danger of exploitation and monopolistic control by the Mandatary Power, through making British interests supreme, and especially through large Indian immigration. This danger will need increasingly and most honestly to be guarded against. The Mesopotamians feel ve

OT, but it seems that Argentina's middle finger to the IMF has paid off:
But three years after Argentina declared a record debt default of more than $100 billion, the largest in history, the apocalypse has not arrived. Instead, the economy has grown by 8 percent for two consecutive years, exports have zoomed, the currency is stable, investors are gradually returning and unemployment has eased from record highs - all without a debt settlement or the standard measures required by the International Monetary Fund for its approval.

That poor Major however Regular he may be - well, the likelihood of his ever seeing his colonelcy is pretty slim - certainly I've known of at least one other in a similar position who was nailed for being as truthful. Did I read that Chalabi is also going to be running for some sort of office there, too, or did I just imagine it? It was in the last couple weeks I read something to that effect.

1) I'd like to stop quoting 'admin officials'. Their testimony is furiously-spun hearsay, at best, and the practice of quoting them only serves to confuse the American public more. And we get the indirect effect of *not* getting straight answers from the Administration. They feel no pressure to answer questions from the press in an honest manner because the pressure valve has been relieved by sicking these anonymous officials on the public. If we don't get an official position statement from the government, it didn't happen, period. That's my 2 cents, anyways. Of course, if the media played their role as government watchdog they would question such questionable statements.
2) Shorter Administration:
We're not going to change the numbers, we're just going to change the numbers.
It's like, we're not going to kick them out of Fallujah, we're just going to firebomb the city. Great.
OT: Listening to the Shaq/Kobe pre-game hype. It's like a Dynasty reset. Funny. Kobe was clapping like a madman during Shaq intro - dude be scared. Bout sh*tted in his pants.
And on Christmas Day's 6 o'clock news, see what went down on the basketball court with Kobe and Shaq! Also, Rumsfeld caught groping Iraqi detainee on recent trip to Iraq. See you at 6.

Everybody must be full of turkey and dressing and all lying around digesting full as a tick flipping the remote control and unable to post or something. My old mom called me wanting me to come over. She's outdid herself again apparently but I'm almost at the point of a nervous breakdown and I just can't deal with it and I love her so much. I just want to be alone. Is that selfish of me?

This is consistent with previous moves (cancellation of odious debt, various "socialist" programs, etc) and a solid part of the pattern wherein they tried total privatization and cronyism, were forced to admit it is a fantasy, and are doing things in a hybrid of cronyism and real practical steps, but also of the pattern of hypocrisy: for one after another, each of the standard rightist positions finds an exceptrion in Iraq, so they can hurry up and maske it look something other than failure. Just like once economic sanctions belonged all over the world, until you get to South Africa, which had to be spared them because after all everyone knows economic sanctions don't work.

Meanwhile, at 'Little Green Footballs', cut-n-paste guy Charles Squeaky Johnson, has this interesting Xmas day post:
"Morlocks Roasting on an Open Fire".
"Morlocks", if you didn't know, are non-right wingers. Squeaky here demonstrates his utter inability to come up with any thought that isn't either cheering on war-activites or bashing the 'left', (ie anyone not right-wing). Since 99% of Johnson's posts are cut-n-paste articles, often the whole thing, it's interesting how he makes his money: reprinting other peoples work for whatever he can rake in from his site. I have a strong suspicion that LGF is funded by some well-heeled Far Right institutions, who could drop (say) $5K/Month to keep the Pro-War, Pro-Likud, Pro-Bush set pumped up with anti-arab and anti-muslim propaganda. Anyway, his latest post, "Morlocks" just demonstrates how utterly shallow Squeaky is, and how fast he dances to keep his regular blood-thirsty crew busy hating.

Yeah, she just totally outdoes herself during the holidays, probably with a big ham and cornbread dressing. She sends it all home with me because I'm the only family member who's single and you can't eat it all. Nobody can. But I've just been really nervous lately and don't want to deal with family functions. I'm comfortable with going to work later and being left alone.

OT but VERY IMPORTANT.
My son is giving his girlfriend a kitten (With her parent's blessing and complicity.) and he is highly upset that the thirteen week old kitten (from a shelter) is acting strangely. He wants the kitten to be a lapsitting, purring, cuddle of joy. I explained to him that cats are sort of feral animals and do what they want to do on their own terms. But since I am father and a dog lover I know not what I am talking about. The kitten is hiding everywhere and acting a little agressively. Are there any of you cat owners and lovers willing to give the boy a bit of comfort? (He thinks he has a defective kitten.)

"Morlocks", if you didn't know, are non-right wingers.
This is fascinating, because of course Wells had them as the evolutionary end of the capable, practical, ruthless proletarian feeding on the effete, helpless, lazy upper-class eloi once nature took over the imposed unnatural state of class. Again and again we come to the question of rightist ideologiy just being a simple reverse of truth.

DWD--all animals are the same. If you invest attention (especially from youth on) you will get an attentive pet: if you stick it outside and make it aware of a reliable food source you get a wild but well-fed thing. Patience, diligence and attention to detail are very necessary here, it's just like parenting. The boyfirend is either asking his girl to devote a lot of time to civilizing it, or volunteering to raise it himself. It is not a baby jesus butt plug.

Tell him the kitten needs to get used to it's surroundings, first. What I did with my wonderful Saddie was pen him up in a cat carrier and put my previously worn t-shirt in with him. He stayed in the carrier a week - Mainly for his own protection at that time, but also (the shirt) to get him to bond to me. He bonded alright!

The kitten is hiding everywhere and acting a little agressively. Are there any of you cat owners and lovers willing to give the boy a bit of comfort? (He thinks he has a defective kitten.)
Perfectly normal in my experience. A cat needs to adjust to a new environment. At first they hide in the most impossible places (under the refrigerator, for example) and are not friendly. Once ensconced in their final environment, they adjust in a week or two to other animals, people, objects, etc. At that point, of course, they own all they survey.

Well, what, you just have to let a cat do their own thing. Art Bell said that there comes a point when you and the cat know in each other's minds you've bonded. You kids are probably too young to understand that. My cat and me aren't at that point yet but he's at my feet right now sleeping. He may get up later and lie in the sunshine up in the window he's discovered.

Kittens are just shit-scared little creatures. Very lovable, but not necessarily tractable. That's how they are. Tell your son to cut the little kitty a bit o'slack and to be willing to help his lady friend acclimatize the new pet. It would be a nice "group project."
Patience is key.

DWD: Are there any of you cat owners and lovers willing to give the boy a bit of comfort? (He thinks he has a defective kitten.)
Cat owners? [She titters.] First lesson: CATS are the owners, we exist only to serve them.
Along those lines, patience and paying close attention to what the kitten is demanding of you will pay off in the long run. Once you can read the signals and understand when the little darling wants to be fed, to nap, or to bounce off the walls, he/she will gradually come to tolerate being a lapsitter and even purr for you on occasion. Remember, tho, it will be when he/she chooses, not when you are the one looking for comfort.
With these simple guidelines, your son and his GF will find being owned by a cat to be a truly joyful experience.

David Brooks is recommending "mind-expanding" essays from "public intellectuals".
This should be good, considering that reading Bobo as a public intellectual is akin to eating at Chili's to experience gourmet.

Can't we just send our electronic voting machines over there? The repugs won't need them for almost two years.
It would be funny if they did and forgot to reprogram them and Bush won 51% of the vote over Sistani.

Morlock Hunter: amazing how you morlocks just spew invective towards our leaders and operate out of pure hate and spite!
Morlock Hunter
Now, now. There was absolutely no invective, that's pure projection. My post was an observation about Johnson continuously stirring the pot and wondering about the ethics of his posts being largely other people's work, for which he is making money. There are other sites who have had to agree not to post wholesale articles, 'fair use' being the issue. Johnson, it seems, is not a writer or commentator, merely a cut-n-paster who throws in snarky remarks. Most of what he cut-n-pastes is suggested by his commentators, so he's got a good thing going here. Not much work involved.

Forget about the ethics of making money. How about the psychological element?
Can you imagine your life's work being to stir up hatred against one religious/ethnic group?
That's got to cause some deep spiritual damage after awhile.

One needs to get through the short run to make it to the long run.
Given that reality, consider the effects of the big-state/small-state compromise reached in the drafting of the United States Constitution: about 650,000 residents of Alaska control 3 electoral college votes, and in the Senate - 2% of control. Entrenched minority privilege can lead to bad results.
In Washington, where I live, somewhat more than 6 million residents control 11 electoral votes and 2% control of the Senate.
So, a single voter in Alaska is about 4 times more effective than I am in the electoral college, and about 9 times more effective in the Senate where (among other things) international treaties and federal judgeships are ratified.
If I lived in New York or California, of course, the disparity of senatorial influence would be even more striking.

Did these people have a Merry Christmas?
Dad Tries to Sell Christmas Gifts on EBay
HOUSTON (AP) -- The kids were naughty, Dad put the presents on eBay instead of under the tree - and Mom's been crying ever since. Now, even the tree's down.
Sometimes you have to make good on what you say so that the kids will know you mean it.
Years and years ago, when my son and my youngest neice were youngsters, My other neice, K, (a couple years younger than I) the kids, and I were driving somewhere and we were going to stop for hamburgers/fries to take to the park. The kids were being unruly and K told the kids that if they didn't behave they would get beans. Sure enough, they would not behave. We stopped and got burgers/fries then stopped at a convenience store and picked up some beans and a can-opener. When we got to the park, the kids were shocked to find out they actually were getting beans for lunch

How about we give 51% of the seats to women?
Sounds like a plan to me. Provided they are drawn from that pool of Iraqi women who have college educations, professions, work outside the home.... Oh that's right. That would acknowledge that "Before the Gulf War in 1991, the UN graded Iraq's standard of living equal to that of Greece. And the status of Iraqi women reflected this.
Within two decades of Ba'ath Party control, literacy for women was 88 percent, up from 23 percent in 1970. In the 1970s and '80s, facing a labor shortage, the government actively encouraged women to join the work force. In 1974, it decreed that all university graduates would automatically be employed.
New laws prohibited sex discrimination on the job and sexual harassment. Much-needed reforms were begun regarding divorce and inheritance. Abortion was not legalized, but contraception and family-planning information were widely available.
Iraq's educational system was legendary for its accessibility and efficiency. The government built new schools, trained teachers and doctors and scientists. More than half the university student population was female. Working women typically got six months fully paid maternity leave and an additional six months at half pay. Equal pay for equal work was common.
It was unimaginable that Iraqi women would be molested for not wearing the facial veil or for walking down the street unaccompanied by a male, as in Saudi Arabia. They were not segregated at work or in the mosques, and of course they drove cars and voted both illegal in Saudi Arabia. Women were notably active in public life and commonly in positions of management over male employees."

VATICAN CITY - Pope John Paul II offered Christmas wishes Saturday for a world where he said timid but hopeful efforts at peace co-exist with worries over Iraq, the Holy Land and several tragic conflicts in Africa.
Hey, 71% of his "flock" voted to hand Preznit Jerkoff another four years to wage even more wars.
His bishops told the "flock" not to vote for John Kerry because fetuses were more important than the people being killed in Bush's war.
I find it very hypocritical that JP II can talk about peace when RCs supported King George the Warmonger so overwhelmingly!

An excellent example is the opposition of the GOP to DC statehood. It does not matter to them that the arguments they offer would also deny statehood to a certain mountain state but the idea of two additional Senators who would probably be Democrats upsets their tenuous grip on the levers of power and is unacceptable.

The kitten is fine. Love it on its own terms and feed it the same way. Have food out at all times. Don't let small children pull its tail. Let it hide and rub its face on everything.
Never hit it or punish it physically, humans are much stronger than they know to animals and forget the damage they can do too easy. Remember, it's not only an animal, always smaller than you, but it's also a baby with an undeveloped understanding of the world.
I used a squirt bottle to the backside (not ears or face) to discourage the two bad habits my kitten had. Climbing the screen and getting on the table. The habits are pretty much extinguished when I'm home.
It'll grow up and be the boss, but it'll love you and let you live in its house and keep "your" bed warm for you.

When I got my cat she was 18 months old. She immediately ran and hid behind the couch. I left her alone and just made sure that food, water, and litter box were close to her hiding spot. For about 2 weeks she would never come out when I was there. Eventually, she'd come out once all the lights were off and I was in bed. Now, she's sitting on my shoulder, watching what I type. You just have to give them time to get used to a strange, new place.

oh, one more thing on kittens! Walk in socked feet not hard shoes until they become aware of the dangers of feet. Gently close all closet doors until they are no longer curious about the dark interiors.
It's unlikely that any kitten will grow up without an encounter with a foot or a closet door.
yes, my kitties are total mama's boys.

I think everybody has post traumatic stress disorder from the stolen election. I guess what we need to do right now is what we're doing and that's healing and hopefully we'll be able to reverse what's going on in the near future. I realize I haven't been too helpful with my antics and I'll try to chill some of that.

His bishops told the "flock" not to vote for John Kerry because fetuses were more important than the people being killed in Bush's war.
I find it very hypocritical that JP II can talk about peace when RCs supported King George the Warmonger so overwhelmingly!--Terry C

I'm surprised that the version of Democracy that Bush is introducing to Iraq doesn't include gerrymandering. It would be the only way to make it a level playing field on the up-an-up.
It is one way to evenly separate and divide large, close-knit ethnic groups, while giving small groups an even chance to participate.
Governing requires a bit of forethough. Without it, you end up with anarchy.

Why don't they just send Diebold, Blackwell and Katherine Harris to Iraq. They have teamed up to steal two elections in America. Iraq should be simpler. However if you get caught there you might get shot. Here you just get promoted.

ΤΏΤ - I have a small suggestion. Think about maybe going over to your Mum's to-morrow for Boxing Day, and taking Stringey with you. This will be a chance to see how he does in the car, and to show him other nice people. Also, your Mum would be happy to feed you and him both.
For everyone else, I recommend a more strenuous time starting with the 7am opening of your local Target for the acquisition of such fine things as 5cent packages of crisp tissue paper, 10cent rolls of wrapping paper and those really kuhl cellophane wrapped baskets of obscure but desirable foodstuffs at 75% off. I've gotten bottles of white truffle oil for $1.25!
All of this will allow you to properly celebrate the birth of Baby Jesus' younger brother, Bubba, as you wait for 6 January and the arrival of the Epiphany of John Kerry.

Wrong or partially right. You never do it unless you are married AND want to make a baby. Any other time, keep it zipped. The woman, subservient to her husband, has no say as to when she wants to get pregnant. Men, of course, only want to fuck when they want to create a baby. The rest of time they are more than will to find, uhm, other avenues.

Unconceding on January 6? Could it be?
I've had a feeling that jfk dropping off the face of the earth was weird. But I really can't get my hopes up that this is going anyplace. If the election is thrown into disarray, I guess the Congress would have to vote on whether or not to validate the electoral college vote.
Frankly, I want them to force a vote, because it has not ever (? Tilden Hayes) happened before and would thus add another asterick to W's* place in history. I will settle for that. Then we won't be the only ones taling about the BFEE.
* The only man to serve two terms as president who was never legitimately elected.

Incog - I think you are wise to not take String to a strange house with a lot of people he doesn't know - he'll just freak and hide, most likely.
But if you ever want to take him places in the car, it would be good to start him young. Get him a carrier - you don't want him loose in the car if you are alone with him. Cats head right for the driver's feet and for some reason will get under the pedals and stay there. Makes it impossible to brake or drive.

Tee-hee! Incog it's only been like ten or fifteen days! I'm with Tena on this one - maybe before anything, take Stringey out to the car and let him explore it. Don't go anywhere, just get in with him and let him see what it is. Lots of smells and nooks and many crannies.

It kind of makes sense that JFK, the former prosecutor, would be quietly building his case in the background, and then hit them out of the blue when they are unprepared. See, I just said I'm not getting my hopes up, but, Please, oh please let this happen.
If it happens, I promise to be a good woman for the rest of my life. I will turn myself over to my husband and do whatever he wants me to forever (pretty safe promise since he has never asked me to do anything I didn't want to do anyway). But really, this could turn me into a praying woman.

String is too wild. I mean he's really wild and only barely tolerates me after all this time. Anything sends him bolting shot like an arrow from the room even the tea kettle whistling.
It's only been a couple of weeks. Give him time. I second leaving him home. My cats never adjusted to car. But by all means, visit your poor ole mum for a bit and get some good home cooking.

I've had an idea for some time that Kerry's rapid retreat was strategic - a means of misdirection. I hope so.
strategic and graceful. If, as the article says, he wins by the results being found to be false and never has to unconcede or challenge the mighty villain in court, the bastion of liberal justice.
Oh, goodie...boy king may not be allowed to take the crown? I can't even get my hopes up...but if it's found to be true...I'll get my torch and manure fork out.

No, he needs to become familiar with his environment so that he isn't frightened. That's your job - you're his Person. You have to show him the way stuff is around where he is now. Otherwise, you would be living by the side of the track and he would be looking out for you.

Just exactly what I was just thinking. Won't the pundits have to scramble and retool after all these weeks of hammering the moral values mandate idea. That alone would be worth it.

I'm laying off the Hypnotiq martinis for the rest of the night. Bush's plan doesn't sound like Democracy to me. It sounds like a quota system. Isn't the person's accomplishments supposed to count above all things?

So do we get to say that all the "Dems need to be more accommodating" crap is just that--crap?
The right will come unglued. And I don't know how all of this will play out if Ohio's votes come under fire. It could go a lot of ways.
I do know that, if it goes Kerry's way, JFK part II will face a rightwing counterattack that made Clinton's admin seem like Hobbiton on Xanax.

i just finished dinner with mom and g'mom, and g'mom was all about religion. now, she voted for kerry and hates bush with the fire of a thousand suns, but for some reason i can't get her to stop watching TBN. she was going on and on about how islam is evil, TBN ministries are saving hatians and africans from starvation thru jeebus, and how there is nothing wrong with TV preachers owning private jets. it's maddening! she and i agree on every other issue, she even left saying, "i'm so proud i raised my family liberal" and i can't stop her from sending the TBN people her money.

I gave my dogs their presents, and Hank loved his George Bush chewtoy. It has little Western boots and a book about English as a second language in the backpocket. Henrietta didn't want the Arnold the Governator one, which I knew because Henrietta is the boss of the house and bosses don't play. So Hank has two chewtoys.
THen they got peanut butter dog cookies and I gave them one each and left the room with the bag on the table. Which has always been safe. I came back to two fighting dogs and no dog biscuits left. Henrietta is twelve and Hank is five and they have never ever had a fight. This was a real one. What Christmas does to you!

And Kerry is not unconceding. He's just joining the Ohio suit which means pretty much nothing.
It's all like a game, and nobody wants to see that the game was played fraudulently, because that would collapse the whole system. So nothing will happen now, and the same farce will take place in two years time and so on.

Yes, but if he'd won on 11/2, that would have happened anyway. They're so filled with vitriol that they have nothing else. I actually think the staged antics in the Ukraine would have been on every street corner in America if JFK had seemed to have won.
But this is sort of what I've been stewing on all along, JFK on the Paths of the Dead, coming up the river from around the back to seize the day.

NYMary - But this is sort of what I've been stewing on all along, JFK on the Paths of the Dead, coming up the river from around the back to seize the day.
Merry Christmas to you and Thersites and the beautiful children of your union.
This is what I've had going on in the back of my mind, too, Mary. This is kind of goofy and weird, but right after the election, I threw the I Ching about it. I swear to y'all, this is what it led me to believe was going to happen.
Now, I'm aware that the future doesn't exist except as possiblities. That's kind of why I like the I Ching - it seems to be based on possibilites because it is based on movement (and fundamentally I'm more of a Taoist than I am a Buddhist.) However, it can be the most frustrating thing in the world to try to get an answer from. But right after the election I got a very clear answer, and this is pretty much what it said. Which doesn't make it real, just spooky. Really spooky.
[it's another guilty pleasure, like horoscopes. What makes it not quite as guilty is that it can be so obscure that a lot of times it's almost meaningless. When it's clear like this was, who knows?]

If it did, and voter fraud could be proven via electronic voting machines, wouldn't this open the door to investigations of other close races where repugs won and the same machines were used?

Best version of Hamlet ever is from Shel Silverstein.
HAMLET (AS TOLD ON THE STREET)
By Shel Silverstein
Now Francisco and Bernardo, they was guardin the castle,
Leanin on their spears, not lookin for no hassle,
Havin themselves a brew or two,
When out in the night they hear woo-wooo-wooo.
And here comes this ghost, lookin ragged and rank,
In a rusty suit of armor, goin clank, clank, clank.
They say, "Hey, Mr. Ghost, are you our dear departed king?"
But the ghost dont say one motherfuckin thing.
He goes, "Wooo-wooo-wooo." They say, "Hey, we better split,
And go tell Hamlet about this shit."
So they run find Hamlet, they say, "Hey, sweet Prince,
Your daddys ghost been seen runnin hither and hince.
Hes all full of maggots and hes grizzly and grim,
Somethins rotten in Denmark and -- whew -- we think its him."
Hamlet say, "Oh, are you sure its my pop?
Did he have matty gray hair with a bald spot on top?
Did he have bright blue eyes that never know fear
And a tattoo says GERTRUDE FOREVER right here?"
They say, "Hey, the thing just flittered by our station,
We didnt give him no physical examination.
And we dont know for sure if your daddy was the one,
But we do know a motherfuckin ghost when we see one."
Hamlet say, "Show me where you spied this spectral klunk
So I see if its my pop, or if you was both drunk."
So they bring ol Hamlet to the spot, and then
They wait five minutes and wooooo ---
Here he comes again.
He got gray skin, black teeth and hollow eyes,
Beckonin like this -- young Hamlet cries,
"Hold, spirit of darkness, are you a ghostly apparition?"
"No," says the ghost, "I look like this from malnutrition.
Of course Im a ghost, but don, dont be scared,
And Ill tell you some shit thatll fry your hair."
(There is more if anyone is interested)

Yes, he would have had it rough, but it would be worse now. Much worse. After they thought they had it locked up, and the Dems could be flogged at will for the next four years?
Echidne may be right. This may be going through the motions. I don't know. We can't really know, until it plays out.
I guess we'll have to do what we can to show we are willing to fight to the end.

Incog -
Honestly, you do not need to take String into a car. I'm sorry, but that's a ridiculous idea. The little guy needs to adjust. Your first instinct was dead on about this. Unless he needs to go to a vet don't start dragging him around. It will really set him back and is not necessary.
Off to see The Incredibles and Finding Neverland! Happy day to Incog, String, John Kerry the Magnificent and everyone else!

Wow, we hadn't done an iChing reading for probably 20 years, but on election day, we did. We remember it being a very favorable outcome. How interesting that you did the iChing too. I don't usually make too much of these things, but I sure enjoy the concurrence.

Most interestingly about horoscopes have been those from the English astrologers concerning the election. They are not the same as those coming from the US.

1-George Bush aint leaving until the oil wells run dry.
2-The only Sunni's who will be part of the government the US intstalls will be 100% US approved Sunni's. "Uncle Sunni's," something like Uncle Toms.

What they are is total bullshit....except when they're true.
A strange thing about astrology...
The less you believe in it, the MORE likely you are to fit the description for your Sun or Moon sign.
I remember a rant Carl Sagan had against astrology once. He was dissing it because people always guessed he was a Gemini, when in fact, he was a Scorpio. And these two signs are miles apart in personality and temperament. About as far as two signs can be.
Didn't take long to look up his Moon sign. You guessed it: GEMINI.

Rexroth's daughter - Me too - things like that interest me - synchronicity.
Somewhere I have the hexagrams still that I threw and the resulting treatises. It was basically step by step (I had one changing line) that first, nothing could be done because evidence needed to be gathered more or less quietly and the opponent was too strong. Then it developed, more people came to his side until there was a large number supporting him. Finally everything broke out into the open and good triumphed, basically.
And as for the right freaking out - if there is clear evidence that this election was rigged by the Repugs - fuck their getting pissed off - fuck them raw. I think it will piss off a lot of people.

I don't remember which hexagram came up, just remember that it was very favorable. Between that and the exit polls, DPR and I were positively giddy when we took a walk, imagining R F Kennedy, jr as head of the EPA. Needless to say, we've put away that little box of hope in a very dark closet.

And since we're talking divintation, the Tarot kept telling me that Kerry would win the election right up until Nov. 2. On the morning of Nov. 3, I asked who would be president and I pulled the King of Swords, which I took to mean whoever was more determined would be president. I'd been assuming that was Bush, but it would be fascinating if it turned out to be Kerry. Also very big on strategy is the King of Swords.

THOMAS L. FRIEDMAN continues to write columns as if he has no memory of his past writings or current history. Every column he writes seems to be that of a newborn babe who has just opened its eyes -
"We face two gigantic national challenges today: One is the challenge to protect America in the wake of the new terrorist threats, which has involved us in three huge military commitments - Afghanistan, Iraq and missile defense. And the other is the challenge to strengthen American competitiveness in the wake of an expanding global economy, where more and more good jobs require higher levels of education, and those good jobs will increasingly migrate to those countries with the brainpower to do them."
What has Iraq or missile defense got to do with "terrorist threats"? Not a thing, of course. When did Conservatives start caring about public education or public anything? They don't. This is a man that literally wouldn't know his ass from a hole in the ground.

I did the research myself on him. Hee hee. And what Scorpio man ISN'T fond of himself? I know. I've been on collision courses with about half of the straight Scorpio men on this planet.
Also very big on strategy is the King of Swords.
Well, strategy implies the ability to think. So that rules out Bush. Unless you're realistic enough to think that Rove or Cheney is really President. In that case, Bunnypants gets to keep hopping around the WH Rose Garden.

Tarot cards? I Ching? Horoscopes? Bargaining with god for your sils and the election? This sounds more like new age California than anything reality-based. Just saying.....

I will even try, very, very hard to forget the fact that she tried to acquire the items left to me by my mother; including the furniture I was then (and still am) using. Also the family jewels.
GWP:
I believe you. One of my cousins told her father that she wanted her share of her inheritance now, thanks much. Um... Dear old Dad isn't even pushing daisies yet, nowhere near it (too mean to die).
My brother is raising a shit fit that my mother's current husband will get part of her estate when she's dead. Not even the 50% that Texas probate would give him. My mother's leaving my stepdad 25%. But that's not enough. Then he got mad because my mother realized that I might not know money very well, but I had good sense--I needed to be executor (executrix? ooh, sounds kinky!) of her will. I also have medical powers of attorney and all that for her. She doesn't trust him not to pull the plug on her if she doesn't wake up from surgery five minutes out of the operating room. Seriously.
I'm already prepared for him to go fucking nuts when my Mom dies. He won't be happy until he gets everything. Typical wingnut.

LJ - well, my dear sister-in-law was entirely unaware of the family history in these things. You see, on the nice, kind Oklahoma side, her scare tactics might have worked. But on the side derived from my 7th generation Irish Canadian Grandmama, and the Grandfather who not only, with his brothers, ran from the Prussian draft circa 1890, only to encounter the possibility of a Canadian draft in 1914, which caused him to first marry Grandmama and then run like hell even farther west, and then, ultimately cut out all his brothers from any kind of inheritance, and pass -that- legacy to his four sons, none of whom spoke to one another after the Old Man died because of the will - that is for 25 years.... well, let's just say her tactics were less than effective. The answer is, get an estimate of the value, pay it off half to the relative, explain that they'll get nothing out of you and tell them to go to hell. Works well.
The only problem is that now, my first cousin once removed is discovered to be a nice chap who owns most of the Cinnabon stores here in Phoenix and I can't figure a way to connect, thus depriving me of a real bennie.
And Spinoza - I would bargain with a great deal more malevolent spirits than Hecate's sister-in-law if it gained me John Kerry as president. And I, as an old Celt, know an awful lot of ways to open those discussions, tho they may imperil that which I would as soon not risk without cause.

Bob and I have always used sesame seed oil for our erotic bang bangs. But last night, finding we had none, Bob used a multiweight Pennzoil 15-45. Damn. When Bob shiftged his pencil gear from low into high, I had a viscosity number the other side of santorum. And the neat thing is if I don't shower I can get 3000 miles on a quart!

My sil only married my brother for what she thinks they'll inherit when my mom dies. She's as vain and shallow and vapid as anyone I've ever met. I mostly stay away from her if I can swing it.

And it's okay for Scorp men to be fond of themselves. Part of their appeal. Makes it easier to deal with them, in some ways. They're so busy loving themselves, you don't have to do it for them. Just let them control your life a bit when they deigned to notice you. Which usually left me free to deal with all those pesky Libras.

Just don't ever expect to know what's REALLY going on inside down there; Scorpios think that revealing that gives away too much power. It made for a very "interesting" adolesence, I can tell you.

well, old white lady, kerry is a fighter.
however if we get a domino effect, and other key states were shown to have been stolen too, a certainty!, then we will have a crisis!
the republicans will not give up the presidency! they will not!
if bush loses the needed electoral votes to elect him president, then the republicans will use some kind of emergency methods to make bush president.
but they will not give up the presidency.
that said, i hope that kerry goes through with this. we need to get this out into the open. could be an interesting 2005.

ΤΏΤ - Sweetheart, you talk to your Mum?
You know, right about now, I wish very much I could still talk to mine. My Grandmama too. I surely liked cooking with all of them, and knowing how things were supposed to be.
The other day I was devilling around in a drawer in my Grandmama's secretary, thinking I should clean it out and put things right. In it I found a clutch of letters from my Grandmama's Aunt Inez, sometime around 1960, about five years or so before Ine died - I believe she was born about 1875, up the road from the James boys, and she lived a fine, long life. One of the letters tho made me laugh - she was reporting on the produce she'd put up that year, along with the activities of her no-good son Edgar (who would have been around 65 or so), and as well on her acquisition of her new puppy, Brownie. This is a lady of nearly 90, telling my Grandmama how Brownie had gotten away from her and she'd had to run down the lane to bring him back.
I read it to Arthur and he appreciated it very much. Me too.
Call your Mum.

John - we are multitudinous - some of 'us' are sensible, some of 'us' are not, but very, very, very few of us are wicked, and none of 'us' are idiots. Don't underestimate the sincerity of the hopeful.

GWPDA-
Thanks for sharing parts of that letter with us here too. Letters from family are very few these days. We use email, and mostly that works just fine, but when I think of the future, I realize that none of my nieces or nephews are going to be holding any letters in their hands from their dear old auntie.

With the Bush admninistration in charge of bringing Democracy to Iraq, why in hell would anyone expect anything but fixed elections. Bush doesn't know any other way.
Whatever made anyone think that Conservatives could liberate anyone? If there is liberating to be done, leave it to Liberals.

dread pirate roberts - macushla - 'darling blood of my heart' in the gaelic - and the Irish were always sentimental and bloodthirsty and bloodyminded all at the same time. A good doggie to carry all that.

Elaine,
That's interesting; I don't interpret the King of Swords that way. He's a very determined man who's willing to fight for what he wants and is not too smart about knowing when to give in, but he's generally quite bright and able to use tactics to gain what he wants. But it depends a lot on the cards that show up around him, as all the cards do, I guess. I associated the swords with air, East, thought, communication. What deck do you use?

Rexroth's Daughter,
I realize that none of my nieces or nephews are going to be holding any letters in their hands from their dear old auntie.
Do you keep a journal? I have several that I've kept over the years filled with sketches and contemplations of my reality.

John, might become a born again Christian wingnut before he believes in astrology, but that's doubtful since he believes in science not fiction.
