I want to go on some rant about how our country insists on lying to itself just to sleep at night. At all levels it just seems the facts are easily ignored and the regression toward fascist behavior is comfortably accepted by a large percentage of the public without comment.
If we taught history, the real facts not the sanitized version, would the educated public be able to delude itself so well then? We have learned these lessons so many times.
Oh, but the community would never allow us to get to some history. The principal's phone would ring off the hook.

Payback is going to be hell, we are not always going to be the world's superpower. And yeah, the rest of the world is going to have a long memory.
It always reminds me of the old story of the school yard bully, that finally gets his ass kicked. As he is laying on the ground with two broken legs and a broken arm crying for help, everyone just walks on by. What country in the world is going to come to our aid in twenty years or so? My guess is nobody.

What is the point of being a Superpower. People keep thinking we have to keep that title, but is it real? Did we win a contest for this?
The fact we are influential at a level above other nations was earned. Our conduct is eroding that influence again. When it is titled as being a SuperPower, the implication is we do things by force or influence things with the illusion at least of backing it up by force.
I feel, until recent events, despite our traumatic history we earned our stripes in the influence game. We have still the best document for a people to govern themselves by and the best system. However we can see the flaws. These people we rail against have exploited those flaws, not fixed them, using acts of cynical self-promotion. They are easily seen and our influence is not only diminishing but not to be trusted at our leadership level. We are not a Superpower, but we were the likely best option. Those days are gone at this point.
Yes to discuss what form of torture is right or wrong is the ultimate decline. Our ideals have been back burnered.

Has anyone told Bush his entire career is fiction?
Interesting point. Looking at Bush's career, it has been like watching a Fortune 500 company roll out a new product. Lots of hype, smoke and mirrors, but no substance. What convictions does the man have? He's just a empty suit with Rove's hand up his ass. At least when I listened to his father, or even Jeb, they seem to have some core beliefs. Bush - All I see is a sociopath.

I hate what our country has become. I hate those who have led so many of our people astray. And I want so much for both our government and our religious leaders to be held responsible by the same laws they claim to uphold.
Torture. How can they possibly condone torture, and call themselves human, let alone American?

Atrios,
C'mon, man.
You gotta spend the time to compile a "Best of Eschaton 2004" retrospective.
It will cost you a lot of time and probably money that you will never recoup.
It will never be adequately appreciated and will dissolve from the fruit fly attention span before you are even finished with the effort of producing it.
BUT I WANT IT! WAhhhhh!
Seriously, cull the best of the best.
I've seen some very good stuff here.
It's been a remarkable year.

We did, sorta. After World War 2, we were unscathed, compared to the other industrial powers. We had a bit of a leg up when it came to commerce and power. It's frightfully more complicated that that, but I think that's a good place to pin the medal of "superpower."

Correct, the debate is never reached. They compromise good people even if the issue creating the compromise is false. Look at Kerry and the Swiftboat folks. The Right knew if things got over the top and the truth heard, they could step back, issue mea culpas and toss the SwiftBoaters over the wall. I can Bush and his folks issuing statements how they were fooled by these men and how shameful it was for the Swiftboaters to put up this sham. They went for the gold with a constructed patsy.

And, pseudolus, sorry, friend, but we've got some great debaters. Unfortunately, the Right engages in shouting matches, character assassination, and cheap shots, all playing to people's fears. The main purpose of 'high stakes testing' is to intimidate students into wholesale, thoughtless, mindless, stupid orthodoxy...
Here's how it works:
High stakes tests, in effect, determine the future for all but the most elite students. The tests are referenced to the curriculum. If you do not get 'the curriculum' you don't pass the tests. If you are suspended, or ostracized, or censured in school (for, say, thinking too much or talking too much), you are denied access to 'the curriculum' and are thereby penalized when it comes time to take the tests...
It's very effective...

Plus, and I wish I could properly credit the person who wrote this here a couple weeks ago, but the level of debate in this country has sunk to this (as seen in the Kerry-Bush debates):
Kerry: Here is a finely nuanced but clear and common-sense answer to a weighty problem.
Bush: Nope. He's wrong. Burn! I win!
Magnify by a thousand times through megaphones like Fox News and Limbaugh and the left is effectively boxed-in.

EkCenTriK -
The conventional meaning of superpower conveys military superiority. I use it more in the context of, in 1960, we had 5% of the worlds population, and accounted for 40% plus of the worlds economy. Flash forward to current, we have about 4% of the worlds population, and now account for about 20% of the worlds economy.
Roll forward twenty years, and we may only account for 10% or less of the worlds economy. The USSR was a superpower (militarily), but look where that got them. I just see us in somewhat the same boat, overspending on the military so we can be unilateral (the bully image we have around the world).
Hell, if China, Japan, and India want to take us down a notch, they can do it in 24 hours by dumping a trillion dollars or so of our bonds (embellishing the point). Obviously they are going to do it slower by just turning down the cash spigot so they don't hurt their own economies in the process.

A lot of the problem came from the "Lord of the Rings" view of the war. That we're "good", and therefore we're allowed to be as evil as we need to be.

Look, all Bush has to do to resolve the issue is to issue a pardon. He should start with Alberto Gonzalez.
It would be perfectly in keeping with the modus operandi of this administration.
Brazenly violate the law and normal standards of human decency, and then flaunt how those who disagree can't do a damn thing about it.

I'm afraid I don't agree. The point of LOTR is avoiding evil. Power corrupts, and it corrupts the intentions as well as the deeds. The forces of good did their best work when they cooperated, supported each other, resisted the tools their foes used, and stayed true to themselves. When they strayed from those ideals, and those tactics, bad things happened.

And, pseudolus, sorry, friend, but we've got some great debaters. Unfortunately, the Right engages in shouting matches, character assassination, and cheap shots, all playing to people's fears. In a real debate, with facts and figures and references, we kick their asses time and again. So they've changed the game, and sadly our side keeps playing it.

Filkertom,
You may be right. I've only seen the first movie. I just use that as a reference because I've heard wingnuts use "Lord of the Rings" in their rationale for why we needed to invade Iraq in the first place.
Why people are using fictional movies to determine what we should do in real life is pretty scary, but it happens a lot and I worry it's why the "Terminator" is now in charge of California.

thehim -- yeah, well, even the Terminator became the good guy in the last two films.
The original books and all three films -- especially in the Extended Editions -- continue with the theme that the Ring corrupts. Aragorn is one of the only men with the will to resist it. The hobbits, as a race, seem better suited to resist its lure because they really don't have a need or inclination to lord it over anyone. Sorcerors like Gandalf and Galadriel, already accustomed to wielding power, were actually more susceptible to it -- think of all those jokes about someone whose last words are, "Don't worry, I got i-"

Tired of being stupid yet?
There ARE actions that can be taken.
We don't need to complain.
Think about it.
What do repugs and war mongers care about and how do they keep their power?
Suppose we all called in sick for a month from our jobs?
Took all of our money out of the banks and stopped spending for a month?
How long would it take to save enough money to live on for a month and just coordinate our efforts and go down at the same time?
Stock up on food and water. Turn off the TV. Gather up our ethical, logical, and passionate courage and work everyday on a variety of projects we never get to do. Meet our neighbors. Have meetings in our churches about what is religion for anyway, but to learn compassion and forgiveness. And if we are about that, why the paradox of causing war?
In the meantime, their contest among themselves that keeps hurling us toward absense will embarrassingly fall way below standards and who knows, they may even implode on themselves.
Don't go to war. Just don't go. Don't get yourself killed for duplicity and greed. Hide out. Leave the country.
Fight to get our regulations that provide safety and security in public trust back into focus and back into play.
We are rapidly becoming a third world country. This admin and its followers may actually be creating an illusion of armeggedon and are so raptured up in the power to create this illusion that they are willing to "romantically" go down with it, while we are the protesting sitting ducks.
Where is this American spirit we are supposed to be so proud of?
How come the Ukranies can stand against fraud and we cannot?
Have we all become wimps? Fuck you wanna be like the rich comforts... that won't matter if the bombs and the gestapo set in...
To be proud to have gone off to kill Iraqis is quite sick.
This is pychobabble and those towers imploded by design, not by airplane.
when will Americans snap out of denial and begin to see the patterns in this horror story we are caught in?
You are right that they are wrong and that as we currently hold it, we are powerless. Any individual that stands up will be murdered, or silenced or ridiculed.
But what can they do to the masses? Especially if we act all at once?
Even one week of shutting them down will cause major bankruptcy and reveal the perpertrators.
Everything is auditable. Everything that has to do with money is traceable unless you no longer get your original documents back from the bank... guess what... ? we are in a world of shit.
shit stinks, and it holds the miracle of life in its cells..... when it mingles with the dirt it is meant to feed.

I remember watching a debate on choice on PBS. The wingnut said something about a connection between breast cancer and abortion. Citing some obsure minor study funded by a wingnut organization. The prochoice person pointed this out, then proceeding to cite mainstream, peer reviewed studies disproving the theory. It was eerie cause the wingnut didn't even look at the pro person, did not dispute anything she said, just spurted out another lie.
That's how they debate. Lie, lie, lie.

Exactly. Be careful what you wish for, people. Another Great Depression is not something you want to go through. It's like the fundies wishing for the End of the World so they can watch us suffer from heaven.
A financial crisis could literally wipe out thousands and thousands of people's lives.

so can bombs and poison in our water, and pharmaceuticals that are not safe, and strokes, heart attacks from stress, and so can the hatred of others coming at us one at a time....
is this the fear everyone is in a holding pattern over? a financial crisis? Aren't we already having one?
a thirty year crisis in fact.
30 years ago we got 14% interest on our savings and could have enough in our savings to retire... now we get 1.75% and pay 14% for the debt we need to survive... and one or two layoffs and we are HAVING A FINANCIAL CRISIS>>>
but not some of us, huh? not yet.

Tena - It's not a matter of "wishing for", but more a matter of the inevitable. Just like all the wingers saying we wish for Iraq to fail. Of course we don't wish for that, it is just some knowledge and common sense made us know that we will fail.
With some sane financial policies, we could have extended our economic dominance well into this century. Instead, Bush has taken us to the edge of the cliff, and seems determined to take us over the cliff. You or I could not spend 20% more than we make forever, so how can the US do it? The answer is we can't, and the world banks have us by the short hairs. It ain't gonna be pretty...

About 4 years ago I saw Bayh Buchanan give a talk. It was rambling, pointless and incoherent. Even the young republicans that sponsored her seemed baffled so that in order to get a positive response she'd occasionally throw out a "red meat" talking point - the crowd would then go wild at her brilliant insight.
In Paul Begala's defense, his brain was probably in meltdown at her inanity and blatant dishonesty. Although, as a professional having to deal with the likes of bow-tie-guy you'd think he'd be able to fend better.

does anyone know how to transfer Favorites and/or Address Book from AOL to Firefox?
I don't know of any tools to do that, and I ask the obvious, have you asked Google? If you can't find anything I would suggest you get a good macro tool like Quickeys to automate the manual process of copying and pasting.
It will also give you some power to automate many of your computer tasks.

chris/tx - oh I agree with what you are saying. I'm quite worried because Mr. Tena is worried. He doesn't worry unless there is really good cause to. He said last night that 2005 had to be a better year for us personally, because 2004 really sucked, right from the start in terms of health issues and family. But he also said that he expected the economy to really be bad in '05. I believe it.
I just don't like to hear people say that that's what we need. There are a whole lot of ramifications of an economic crisis besides getting rid of a shitty administration, as I know you know. No matter how much we want to have people wake the fuck up, an economic crisis is sure a hideous way to achieve it. It scares me silly.

I am scared as well.
We are all frightened.
And we have going on in Iraq and Cuba as a nation is just a forwarning of what our dysfunctional American conflict oriented government is capable of, and from where they stand, we mean nothing.
Maybe if we are good and lay low and do our best to survive like good children, our big daddy won't turn on us?
I guess that is one way to shelve it for a while....

At $25 it may be worth it to you if you have a large address book. Otherwise I would still recommend a good macro tool like Quickeys $49 which you can use in any application to automate repetitive tasks like cutting and pasting (and tons of other stuff). Not recommended if you aren't up to some trial and error work or are computerphobic.
I enjoy it. Sort of like programming without having to learn some arcane language and grammar. Usually you can record your keystrokes while you accomplish some task, then tweak the resulting macro until it works for you.

It should be unthinkable that we would be having to debate about officially-sanctioned sadism.
Once again the right poisons the public well. Next thing you know we'll be debating whether slavery is OK in some states.
Dear Senator Feinstein:
In your analysis of this nominee, please remember that the Geneva Conventions were ratified by the United States to state clearly that this country does NOT condone torture of prisoners, as well as to prevent the mistreatment of Americans who are taken prisoner in time of war.
The nomination of Mr. Gonzales is a disgrace and an embarrassment to this country. The moral credibility of our country is at stake.
Please show that you stand for the fundamental principles of civilized people in opposing this nomination.

This is one awesome tool for customizing Windows. It is so powerful it can intimidate a lot of folks. But, damn! the tricks you can do with it are amazing.
There is a Yahoo forum with lots of smart generous folks who can help you out.

I don't agree. People like my older sister just don't have a clue. They are too busy to follow which cup the ball is under. There's the tragedy. Plus, Bushco excels at bait and switch.

I have never been so depressed and pessimistic heading into a new year except maybe 2000. Jesus, when will this fucking nightmare end? It's not that I wish for further disaster in Iraq or the economy, it's that I want to see the Republicans held accountable for any and all disasters that have occurred, or will inevitably occur.
But instead, we get continuing disasters without any accountability - the worst of both worlds.
