Did anybody else catch that Bush actually said "35 billion" in his remarks to the press the other day? And that the SCLM, across the board, without exception (I looked on google news several times) graciously corrected this rather glaring error without comment? Sure, a slip of the tongue, but does he know (or care) about the difference? Next time look for him to announce that the figure has been upped to 35 gazillion.

European nations have pledged millions in aid to South Asia relief. Britain said it was donating $95 million; Sweden promised $75.5 million; Spain, $68 million; and France, $57 million. Aside from the military commitment, the United States has announced an initial $35 million aid package. WaPo
Sure, Dubya's sending $350 million now, after this hits the papers. See that, George? It's called accountability. Results. You didn't measure up, and the whole world saw it.
The important thing is that we are now giving a respectable amount of aid. Assuming the check really gets sent.

The next two years are going to be bad. We all know that, don't we? It will be just one obvious lie after another after another after another. Meanwhile the value of the dollar will continue to drop, pushing the cost of everything (food, fuel, toilet paper, etc.) up. Interest rates will go waaaay up, causing any number of people to declare bankruptcy from credit card debt. The housing bubble will burst, causing that source of income to vanish.
And through it all, the Bu$h admin will just keep saying everything is peachy keen and whatever isn't is Bill Clinton's fault.
And the sheeple will believe it. Yes, they will.
Excuse me, I need a drink. A stiff one.

Yeah, it's all very nice that Bush has finally been shamed and strong-armed into offering something akin to meaningful help. But where was he in the critical hours when it could have counted for something on the world stage? Crapped out in Crawford ala the runup to 9/11. By him he's a leader; by his mother he's a leader; but by a leader, he's no leader.

Actaully, the Bush administration could get away with saying they are withholding aid until the Sri Lanka government ensures that the aid will go to those who need it most, not simply be used to ensure that foreign tourists are able to continue thier plush vacations.

BAN NAM KHEM, Thailand - While foreign survivors of the ocean's onslaught were put up in an international school complete with beds, TVs and Internet connections, Thais from a devastated fishing village slept outside, many without blankets, burning wood to keep warm and keep mosquitos at bay.
The locals said Friday that they are torn between wanting to help the foreigners, who are the lifeblood of the area's economy, and getting what they can from the relief effort.
But Wimol Thongthae said there was no help at all the first day in Ban Nam Khem, where he said more than 2,000 people — half the village — had disappeared. Eight of his 15 family members remain missing — including his 3-year-old daughter.
In India, survivors complained of feeling insulted by piles of secondhand clothes dumped at roadsides for them. At a makeshift relief camp for women inside a marriage hall in the southern coastal city of Nagappattinam, refugees grumbled about the perceived condescending attitude of relief workers.
That's just great. Treat these people like secondhand citizens in thier own country while their loved ones are dead or missing, and all we do is create increased resentment of white foreigners. Too bad it's their own people doing it this time. We have no excuses for blaming Bush on this one.

I think it was the first person who compared the the size of the donation with the price tag of the coronation. Plus, this is one of those no-brainers that all but the most Ayn Randian of wingnuts would agree with. Not a politically savvy move, stiffing the Muslims.
But I think he was a little late and a lot of people will remember his sluggish and boorish response.

up2date, you may have seen the same item I did on Sunday or Monday morning. The State Dept. (?) authorized the US embassies in/near Asia to cut $100,000 checks immediately for the tsunaimi victims. After rereading it, I don't think that was anything but an immediate reaction, while trying to figure out how bad the situation was. It was never meant to be the total contribution.

Well. I should have retiterated in the top paragraph that the article covered Thailand mainly but also mentioned Sri Lanka. I was trying to associate the all around group of nations that were affected by this. This is not he first article to mention how the locals were being given second class treatment compared to foreigners.

I was trying to associate the all around group of nations that were affected by this. This is not he first article to mention how the locals were being given second class treatment compared to foreigners.
Honestly. I used to wake every morning with my mantra swimming in my head, “I hate school, I hate school.” (There is a long and varied history to his mantra that I will not insert into this thin document. Suffice it to say that after twenty years of panaceas from every quarter, the schools become sort of tiring. But the children remain wonderful and that is why I am still there.) Now from the moment I wake until I finally go to sleep, my mantra has become, “I hate Bush, I hate Bush.”
This is not a rational way for a person to go through life, but it is an honest appraisal of my feelings toward this dork. For the life of me I cannot get the image of Charlie and Algernon out of my mind. Maybe if we had some procedure we could perform on the Bush boy to make him into an intelligent and compassionate human: he would not be so bad. I would no longer have to read the lies in the newspapers or hear them presented as truth on TV. Maybe he would become circumspect enough to end his vacation during a catastrophe and lead the richest (Well, at least so far) nation in the world. Maybe instead of a cockamamie figure like 15 M, he could have answered this way, “We are helping with the relief effort in every way that we can. I have alerted all branches of the government to prepare plans to help deliver and distribute whatever is needed in the affected areas. I do not know how much this will cost as the full extent of the damage is unknown. But whatever the cost, we will bear it happily as we feel an obligation to the world.” But no, he did not do that. He came up with a figure that is roughly one third of what his next coronation will cost.
Then I look in the papers and read the news on the web and things in Iraq are going from bad to worse. Maybe if Algernon’s operation could help him, we would not have to deal with the hatred of the world and the citizens of Iraq. He might be smart enough to just get the hell out of Dodge without trying to turn the place into a neocon economic laboratory. But no, he is not even quite as smart as the rat. So, twenty four hours a day, seven days a week: “I hate Bush, I hate Bush” are the likely words escaping my lips.

The initial offer was $5M with an probal $10M to be added later.
The day after the initial offer of only $15M, there were several idiot pundits on CNN, including Karen Tumulty of Time and Roger Simon of USNews who were claiming that the accusation of "stinginess" was unfair and even factually wrong, whatever that could mean. Now, regardless of to whom the "stingy" remark was meant to apply, isn't it pretty obvious that if $350M is in any way appropriate, then even $35M was grotesquely short of a reasonable or generous offer, not to mention the $15M?
But our media cretins were out there, defending the administration like the best paid whores on God's earth.

I think it was the first person who compared the the size of the donation with the price tag of the coronation.
Four letters along those lines, basically, in the St. Pete Times yesterday. One suggesting Bush donate 48% of the obscene cost of his coronation to help -- in recognition of the people who didn't vote for him and are disgusted at the $30-40 mil going toward "baby back ribs, lobster and booze."
That initial offer should NOT be allowed to disappear down the memory hole.

It's all been a lean job the whole way. The disaster goes down Saturday night out time, and the next day Bush is "thinkin'" about his inauguration and, oh, sending out a few condolences to people. Then they low-balled some figured when the EU was talking about putting in some real money. It wasn't until the guy from the UN and Clinton spoke that Bush started spinning out like the DT's were kicking in and bugs were crawling up his arms. Then it was the 15 million, then he added another 20 million in what will be "loans."
Now that Briton and the World Bank really upped the stakes Junior is trying to look like we're going all in and he's buying the pot.. He hates being shown up for the small minded and cheep little turd he is. But again, this is a pledge. The bastard has pledged money before and come up way short. Doesn't mean he can't get it: he pulled 2 billion out of his ass in short order for his brother's state during an election year (not to mention the other 3 billion that showed up later), and he'll go to the well to get another 100 billion for Iraq. But for something like there, which doesn't do him any visible good, he's gonna try and buy this off for as little as he can. I do truly believe that he could give a rat's ass about what happens in Aceh. He's probably like a lot of the wingnuts who believe the place was a haven for terrorist, so fuck 'em, the tsunami did a good job for us.
Words do not convey just how much I loath this asshole.

Yes, Jebbie has all that hurricane disaster experience, so he'll be really helpful with the tsunami damaged areas.
While he's there (in a hotel, of course) do you suppose a couple of hookers will show up uninvited, just like when Neil Bush went on his business trips?
What a shame Rudy Guliani has so much to worry about. With all his 9/11 disaster experience, wouldn't he be a good person to send to Sumatra? /snark

Gotta go with Big Daddy Mars here.
Talk is cheap. Also heard Bush wants to "by-pass" the UN, get some other countries to meet with him, decide what to do. No hurry, right?
But for now: show me the money. AIDS funding in Africa, anyone?

permit me to add a bit of variety to your mantra, by sharing my own (for which I have been roundly reviled, as provoking violence, but which I insist is nothing more than wishful thinking): "Dime-sized hole." Speaking of those who look up to Beavis and Butthead, for a true helping of bile, check out Wesley Pruden's latest column at Jewish World Review. A small sample:
Mr. Egeland, a Norwegian who throws up at the idea that anyone should spend his own money without bureaucratic guidance, says the trouble is rooted in the fact that Americans are not taxed enough. Americans would love to pay more taxes if only they could. Collecting more swag and turning more of it over to the United Nations would enable Kofi Annan to invite a few hundred more bureaucrats, maybe even thousands, to join the easy ride through Manhattan. Isn't that what we all want?
When Colin Powell reminded him that Americans are the most generous people in the world and have the record to prove it, Mr. Egeland went back to the Stinge-O-Meter for a second reading. Mr. Egeland, who knows who pays for his sweet life, decided that his churlish remarks had been "misinterpreted," though "stingy" is a word not easily misinterpreted.
...
America the stingy fits with The [Washington] Post's view of a world where all news is bad, the sun shines only on the rich, the rain falls only on the frail, and everyone is a victim -- of homophobia in Peoria, AIDS in Afghanistan, an outbreak of teenage pimples in San Diego, a tsunami in Sri Lanka, the scarcity of vegetarian restaurants in Topeka, a woman who got winked at in Cleveland, a shortage of condoms in St. Paul. Some days there are so many victims there's hardly any room for the news on Page One.
There's more like that, if you can stomach it. Pruden doesn't think much of his rival paper, does he? Or the UN. Or Clinton, which me mentions further on.
BTW, I recently got a call from a Washington Times telemarketer. She told me that she read the WT every day, and that it was exactly the same as the Washington Post. She also told me that the Washington Post was a very racist paper. When I asked her to justify her claim, she replied "you tell me." If memory serves, it was when I pointed out that if both statements were true, the Washington Times was also a racist paper, that she hung up on me. To be fair, when I reported this to their circulation department, they apologized.

Hey, our initial offer was for them to kiss our big American ass. But after the booze and coke wore off we decided to go the more traditional route - for PR purposes.
To actually collect the aid money though (hehe, and this is my favrit part), each applicant must sign an affidavit stating that they: 1) never had nor ever will use birth control, 2) never had nor ever will obtain an abortion, 3) must forevermore practice abstinance, and 4) will unquestioningly accept me as thier personal savior.
Hehe! You see, the great part about being the King is that you don't have ta follow any rules. Dumb peasants.

A Rush Limbaugh caller wants to know where all the foreign aid from other countries for America was during the Florida hurricanes.
OK all you Limbaugh listeners, try to follow along at home as I walk you through this. No matter what you've heard, the US is a very, very wealthy nation. The per capita income in the US is about $35,000. Hurricane Charley hit on Friday, August 13th. By Tuesday, August 17th, FEMA had already issued more than $2 million in checks for disaster relief. Ten days later President Bush asked Congress for $2 billion dollars for aid (he wasn't on vacation then, and its possible that the election had something to do with the amount). Since then the Small Business Administration alone has provided more than $1 billion to Florida businesses to fix hurricane damage.
Meanwhile, Malaysia's per capita income is $3,550, Thailand's is $2,000, Sri Lanka's is $850, India's is $450. The US poverty level for an individual with no children is just over $9,000.

A committment of measely fucking dollar, per person in the US, would have amounted to less then $300 MILLION, but would have been seen as an amazingly generous gesture.
Oh, yeah: and they don't have to 'loan' my dollar, either. Just give it the fuck to 'em...
btw: my last ex-wife and I agreed the other night to jointly donate $500 to Red Cross...
another thing: the stock markets in the affected areas are going nuts, just slobbering, over the opportunity the tragedy presents to steal money from the sudden influx of funds to the region...

The official death toll, five days after a quake below the Indian Ocean sent killer waves up to 30 feet high crashing ashore without warning in south Asia, now stands at 124,000
people. Five million people are homeless in the region.
But the worst may be yet to come...
These people -- our fellow human beings -- need our help.
What they do NOT need is the kind of "help" that the United Nations brings -- but apparently, the United States is preparing to turn over millions of taxpayer dollars to the UN and its agencies, supposedly to relieve the immense suffering of millions of people.
This is OUTRAGEOUS, especially given the latest scandalous news about the United Nations, including the "oil-for-food" scandal in which UN officials and their designates received millions in payoffs, the way the UN oversaw the genocide in Rwanda, and the way UN officials in the Congo have turned a "relief effort" there into one giant sex slavery ring.
We don't need to give our money to the UN to help the tsunami victims. We need to give to an organization that
has people on the ground there NOW -- people with a heart and passion only to serve... people who are ACCOUNTABLE.
We believe we have just the right organization: the Advancing Native Missions Organization (ANM). ANM stands behind 3,500 indigenous or native missionaries who are reaching their own people in more than 60 countries of the world.
Headquartered in Charlottesville, Virginia, the Advancing Native Missions Organization is an inter-denominational, evangelical, non-profit missions organization founded in 1992 that serves as a bridge between native missions
organizations and the body of Christ in North America. In the Asian area alone, they are partnered with over 50 local ministries, including Indonesia, India and Thailand.
And unlike the United Nations... ANM is actually *accountable* for all of its funding. THIS is the kind of
organization that can help the tsunami victims -- NOT the UN.
As Joseph Farah wrote about the UN at
WorldNetDaily.com, "Giving these predatory monsters our money and a new relief mission is tantamount to giving them a new license to rape and pillage people who need love and compassion."

Agreed. Just when I don't think I could get any more disgusted with Bush and his corporate sponsors, they do something new that proves me wrong. What really infuriates me is Bush's environmental policies. We might be able to bring back our broken economy, and restore our damaged reputation, but once a mountain has been leveled and dumped in a stream, it won't grow back. These folks make me nostalgic for the rabid environmentalism of James Watt, or the integrity of Richard Nixon, or the compassion of Ronald Reagan.
Alas, I have to go now. Happy New Year everybody, and happy conversing!

In other words, they could have promised $35 kajillion-zillion in tsunami aid, because Bush is all talk when it comes to doing the right thing.
Which makes it all the more peculiar that he *didn't*. Only interpretation I can make is that he didn't even care enough about the brown people to *pretend* to be generous...
Or that for some reason he thought he wouldn't be able to get away with it, but that would be, well, unprecedented.

Funny story from the invasion: when Bush was trying to build the Coalition of the Willing, at first, he wouldn't bribe. He would promise bribes. Turkey looked into his planned spending and saw not a wooden cent set aside for all this pie in the sky: in fact, as is still a Dumbya policy trademark, they found program after program with no serious funding planned at all. They said no, and they said it because they caught the US lying to their face.

As usual, the American media have missed the big picture here.
Much of the coverage and debate in the United States has centered around whether or not the initial U.S. $35 million aid package is, in the words of U.N emergency coordinator Jan Egeland, "stingy." Lost in the petty bickering and wounded American pride is a unique opportunity for the United States to change its badly weakened global image by leading and funding a massive relief package. Ushering in a new era of altruistic and on-going foreign aid to rival the post-war Marshall Plan, the U.S. can start winning back the hearts and minds worldwide lost over the past four years.

Or--and I admit this is in the grey area between 'disgusted cynic' and 'tinfoil hat'--it took a few days for Cheney to realize that there's an opportunity for more no-bid reconstruction contracts.
Think about it. Bush creates another 'coalition'. They set up a special committee to control the funds, with no congressional oversight. The usual suspects (Halliburton, Bechtel, etc.) are contracted by the White House to run things. Where concerns about the way the money is spent in Iraq is slandered as "unpatriotic," concerns about US tsunami relief can be painted as "insensitive" and, predictably, "un-Christian." And they all make out not like, but as, bandits.
Sigh. I think I'll start my NYE drinking early.

You must go to the DemocracyNow.Org site and listen to/read about Perkins' book. He was interviewed today by Amy Goodman. He gave detailed info on what you just said, because he was a big part of it. His book is big on Amazon, but only because of the independent media. The mainstream won't touch it, or interview him, because they are such a huge part of it. Double oy.

Phoenician! I remember you from lurking over at A.Y.'s rantfest. How you doin'?
I spent New Year's Eve in a hospital ER waiting for a surgeon to look at an abscess on my leg, and I'm currently spending New Year's Day with said leg up, scoffing acidophilus yoghurt in the hopes that the antibiotics don't screw my whole system up.
My friends are all out of town, I spent Christmas with only a cat for company, and the friend I have a crush on is dating someone else.
Someone, please, give me a good wingnut to beat up on!

Indian press, one of the toughtest in the world, generally gave high marks to Dr. Manmohan Singh govt
for handling the tsunami situation. Donations from Indian corporations and individuals came pouring in and the govt moved fast. Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh toured the affected areas for two days and announced on the spot grants worth $100M, distributed to the 4 affected states based on losses.
Families of every person lost are being compensated with cash grants
and he vowed to build houses and schools and give them boats (most of the losses occured in fishing villages). He declined western aid for India, announced $23M to Srilanka and Indonesia and airlifted a hospital to Sri Lanka and sent in army to help out.
Sent 2 ships to Indonesia. The govt also announced they will build a $20M tsunami warning system.
All this because the Indian economy is doing well.

The Jeb and Colin 'tour' is going to do what, exactly? What can they see by going there they can't see from here in the US. What about the demands (security, logistics) the visit will place on their hosts? The last thing SE Asia needs to be doing is providing photo-ops for the Bush Cartel. What's needed are helicopters, lots of heavy lift helicopters and lots of JET-A to keep them flying every daylight moment. There are US helicopters all over Europe. They should be migrating now to SE Asia. Chinooks and Blackhawks. Thats what's needed. The supplies won't do any good sitting in distribution centers. Roads are washed out. By the time 'expert' Jeb tells his Chimpy brother, how many more people will have died? How many lives is this 'fact finding' trip gonna cost?

At least get the story straight. I know its hard for you Atrios not to bash Bush when he is doing the right thing. While Kofi Annan was off on skiing holiday, Bush said this "I assure those leaders that this is just only the beginning of our help" when he put forth the initial aide pledge. It was never $15 million and that's it! That was a starting point that has led to $350 million (which is pissing off the Ayn Rand crowd).
Just suck it up, Atrios. Just do the right thing and admit that the Bush administration has been doing the striving to help the tsunami victims from the start. If you think that $35 million, an aircraft carrier, 11 task force ships, C-130s, P3s, KC-135s and 15,000 sailors and marines was stingy, please show us another nation on Earth that pledged as much from the start. And we will all drop why you couldn't lift a finger to link to an aide organization to the help the dark skinned people (as liberal blogs like to point out) for 5 days after you promised.
Since you are such a righteously moral person and more compassionate than any Republican, why don't replace your bleg for presents from Amazon and replace with it a link to their Red Cross donation page? Then you could wax on how doing more for the tsunami victims than [insert right wing blog here] because they don't like helping dark skinned people (as left wing blogs like to refer to the victims of this horrible tragedy).

The housing bubble will burst, causing that source of income to vanish.
It's already happening. Housing starts have dropped to the lowest level in 10 years. Lumber prices are down 30%. Formerly-booming real estate markets like Las Vegas have slowed to a crawl.
The real estate market is a helluva lot bigger than the stock market, and a lot of regular people without cash to spare have very large, very leveraged bets on it through their mortgages.
This ain't gonna be pretty.

Not one penny of that $350 Million is going overseas. Its $350 million in credits that can ONLY be used to buy US grown food at whatever prices the producers decide to charge... likely at about 10x market price. Its a big fucking giveaway to US farmers. Do your homework!!!

Jeb gets on the satphone to his brother after the trip with Powell:
Jeb: 'Hey, George. Jebby here'.
GWB: 'Jeb, how many times..'
Jeb: 'Sorry. Mister President...'
GWB: 'So what did you find?'
Jeb: 'I think it's gonna be okay.'
GWB: 'Yeah, why?. Condi thinks he already has a book deal'.
Jeb: 'He'll take a seat on the board.
GWB: 'Danm. I knew that was a good move. Nothin' like a long plane ride to hammer out a deal..... Well done, Bro.
Jeb: 'Thank you, Mister President.'
GWB: 'I'm gonna be calling you that, someday soon'.

You know, I used to think they (Bush & Co.) were just bad at public relations. Then I thought they really don't care about public relations. Then I finally figured out it's their public relations strategy for the U.S. to be hated by the rest of the world. They take pride in that. It shores up the redneck vote (I guess). And many of their more educated followers are really deep-down appalled that the world now hates us, but they've covered it up with many layers of denial. They wave it off condescendingly as if it really doesn't matter. But beneath the denial, they know it does.

It's not *just* that, though. It's in their electoral interests to ensure that there is a neverending supply of terrorists and Islamic extremists to scare us with, since the War On Terror is probably their single biggest advantage and club against the Democrats.

It is not only the Democrats against whom the club of perpetual war will be wielded. It is a cudgel against the entire citizenry, the People as a Whole. And who can believe they will ever again (peacefully) relinquish that power?
My New Year's greeting:
yesterday evening i remarked, while watching the UNM Lobos irresistably crumble to the Middies, and considering the fact that UNM had not won a bowl game in dog years, that there was a difference between hope and optimism. This is precisely how I feel confronting 2005. My hope for you and yours, us and ours, knows no bounds.
I am not optimistic, however.
Glass half full? Glass half empty? Does it matter if, anytime you try to sip, you slice your lip?
But, anyway, cheers, chers.
Salud!
And good luck.

On All Things Considers this evening, they mentioned the new Justice Department memo on torture several times. Only once did they bother to mention a relation between the earlier memo and Alberto Gonzales. They made it seem as if the Justice Department was acting at this particular point in time in order to accomodate criticism from Human Rights organizations (ha! ha! ha!) instead of the Senate Hearings to confirm Gonzales as AG next week.

if this is indeed the greatest disaster in modern human history, then merely place a temporary $1 surcharge on every barrel of crude oil produced. financial resource problem is solved. and everyone on earth in one way or another shares in the relief effort.
let us see if the oil consuming and producing nation do this.

Even the preliminary reports made it clear that $15 million in aid was a complete joke. $15 million is what you spend on snow removal in New York.
But that's not the point. $15 million was the initial amount -- not $35m -- so that's how they should report it.

"Which begs the questions
"Who leaned on junior to up the kitty?"
Well, John, there are two options here:
a. junior "flip-flopped" on the aid package
OR
b. junior went by the poll numbers that told him the American people wanted him to up the kitty
BUT, since we know junior does not flip-flop, and since we know junior does not listen to polls to tell him how to govern, we can only conclude that God spoke to him personally and told him to up the kitty.
As an aside, I was driving up to San Francisco this afternoon with the trouble and strife and we chanced upon "Savage Nation" on the radio. Now the wife is from Thailand and when Savage started talking about how the tsunamis could have been the "wrath of God" for the sex trade and to wash away some Muslims, and then started ranting about how he didn't owe tsunami survivors "one dime" ... I watched her expression turn to horror (mine too, of course, though I'm more used to that kind of filth spewed on our airwaves than she is) ...
We were astounded to hear several callers call in and tell Savage they agreed with him on both counts ... of course, we turned the channel after our initial morbid fascination with the wingnuts who cannot turn off the spigot of their hate even in the face of a tragedy of this magnitude.

Actually, Herb, I think the initial offer was a glimpse in to the psyche of clinical obsession:
'Explaining the about-face, a White House official said: "The president wanted to be fully briefed on our efforts. He didn't want to make a symbolic statement about 'We feel your pain.' "
Which begs the question: Is there an event so catastrophic, an emergency so dire that it could dislodge the image of Clinton's penis that is ever-present in every wingers' mind's eye?

The U.N. that was formed to um, you know, try to prevent the "scourge of war"? So that the generations to come would not have to live through the horrors of war? The U.N. that tried to do its damnedest (?) to stop the U.S.' march to war - and failed, sadly. And is now mortally wounded and needs our help?

Avestus - NPR reported it because Furious George had the gall to state in his speech that $35 million was the original offer.
Schwa - Do I follow you all over creation about the damn USS Abraham Lincoln hemming and hawing in port here in Hong Kong, so the boys could check out the strip joints a bit longer?
And if the roads aren't available, that's why they need helicopters. There are a few anti-submarine copters in the carrier group, but nothing for really doing heavy lifting. That's what the Aussies are bringing.
Right now, there is a scroll ticker on TV here with bank account numbers. You can go to my homepage and find some of the same ones. Go to your bank and do a freaking wire transfer. It's easy and the organisation won't have to pay credit card transaction fees.
and MYOB, I wrote about Ban Nam Khem a few days ago, before it hit the wires. (Bangkok Post story). Yes, there are issues with economic development based upon foreign investment that favours foreigners over poor locals.
Living in one of those (relatively) poor local areas inside Hong Kong, I can say that after the immediate problems are taken care of there needs to be a discussion on development policies that aren't designed around foreign investment to benefit foreigners.

Here's the bottom line:
The Chimperor played at the ranch on his mountain bike and with his chain saws and let his lackeys fuck things up with the initial $15.0 Million pledge.
After he sobered up, he got on camera in front of his "Western White House" banner, three days late, and lamely tied to cover his ass with a poorly read statement and the $35 Billion flub.
Today, the chimp handlers realize how badly they fucked up and thus they let out the $350 M pledge.
I seem to remember the Shrub once saying something about winning a war of ideas against the islamic radicals.
He had a golden opportunity to show how great this nation can be, and instead he fucks it up one more time.
And the rethug sheep just keep cheering him on.

The Bush administration, along with most everyone else, misjudged the extent of this tragedy at first, but as far as I am concerned, it's better to let that misjudgment go down the memory hole. For Chrissakes, it doesn't serve our national interests at all to detract from the major relief effort now underway. We are the good guys in this story. Let's stop beating ourselves up.
Besides helicopters, I hope they are sending a good number of those air cushion landing craft that the U.S. Marine Corps and Navy have (LCACs) Those suckers can land a 60-75 ton payload anywhere on the coast -- just what is needed. Much more effective than helicopters. And we need to help them get their fishing boats repaired, so they can fish again and feed themselves.
As for Jeb Bush, his inclusion in the delegation appears opportunistic. But he's the brother of the President, so there is a symbolic value. And the experience may be one that changes Jeb's worldview for the better.

The initial report I heard, on the radio, on NPR and the BBC that night, was the U.S. pledged $2 million, which was announced a short time later as BEING DOUBLED to $4 million. I remember this DISTINCTLY, and thought at the time it was a pretty fucking lame offering.
Now, maybe the intial pledge was $100K, but it appears that per other posters in this thread that it was four other countries that pledged $100K each.
This has all been done without a google search, and by the mighty remnants of my working brain and memory, of course. But I'd bet good money on it...
No. Bush is really stingy, and he deserved that insult by that UN official, and when Bush & CO knee-jerk-responded, it couldn't have been played any better.
Shit. They're all just a bunch of brown-skinned Buddhists, anyway. Who cares what they think?

Let's not forget this, too:
The $20 million promised on top of the initial $15 million is NOT a gift or a grant, but a "line of credit".
In other words, a LOAN. Which BushCo wants repaid. Probably with interest.
So our initial offer, no matter what, really was only $15 million.

We are the good guys in this story. Let's stop beating ourselves up.
It's typical that there are those that keep repeating this to themselves to reassure their own image of America as the greatest country on the planet.
Unfortunately what accompanies this attitude is the lack of inclusion of views outside the echo chamber.
Landing craft? After the beaches have been torn up by tsunamis and the ocean is filled with debris? And there has been massive changes in the underwater geography. *geesh* The Indonesian government has requested helicopters. They are on-site.
Either the Busheviks' Red Guards start listening to what the rest of the world is thinking and wanting or the rest of the world will politely leave the US to continue down the path of ruin that Furious George has charted. And the only people then thinking the US is no. 1 will be the Busheviks' Red Guards.
and don't forget... first impressions are the ones always remembered. That's why Furious George has gotten away so many times making big promises and never following through. Unfortuntately for his politics, he forgot this and made a HORRIBLE first impression to the world.

note that amazon.com has about 4 million going to the red cross at this point, and none of the UN folks count private donations (most of the US aid) or military (the first aid was 9 C-130s landed with immediate aid, before Koffie Annan even bothered to leave his skiing vacation in Jackson Hole Wyoming), or the naval aid (two carrier groups which have equipment to provide electrical power, clean water, medicine, engineering equipment and food). It should be noted that no one else in the world even has two super carriers, and darn few even have the equivalent of 9 C-130s.

don meaker - as I've said repeatedly, the japanese and greeks and aussies all had wheels up on transports and aid teams long before the first US carrier, the USS Abraham Lincoln, was preparing to leave port. The second carrier isn't a super carrier, but a helicopter carrier coming out of Guam. And it's headed for the Bay of Bengal.
But Don, feel free to go back and pat yourselves on the back and delude yourselves about the US providing the largest or most important contribution or being the best place to live on the planet.
(Though given the amount of energy the Busheviks and Little Green Raelians put in to shouting this everyday, I'd say you know the ugly truth in your heart and just can't admit that the US is no longer the shining city on the hill for the world.)

don ... you don't get to whine about kofi annan doing jack while skiing while your chimp in chief plays cowboy clearing brush, requiring four fucking days before sobering up adequately to address the world.
I KNOW we have lots of equipment, supplies, and personal donations. The stingy remark wasn't aimed at you, the chimp, or america ... you're just self-conscious enough (and stingy enough) at heart that the comment bothered you. ... clearly, all rich nations were included in an otherwise innocuous remark.
... and if it shamed the chimp into sending 350 million instead of 4 million ... then I don't really care if your panty is in a twist. the money (and other aid) is needed. this was never about you, so get over yourself.
this tsunami may have knocked the eart of its axis (and sped up rotation), but the world still does not revolve around you, the chimp, or america.

Anyone who followed News Hounds and their coverage of Fox News knows that the 350 million number came along and then "got changed" way downward.
now 350 million is up again.
Things that make you go hmmmmm. Is Chimpy in charge or is it a "committee?"
OT: The new year is not eight hours old EST and already a hot contender for lying media whore of 2005. Susan (think that's her name) on C-span just told a caller that they changed their phone lines from Democrats, Republicans, and Other to Supports President Bush, Supports the Democrats because back when Clinton was in office they had a hard time getting Republicans through.
A more obvious and larger lie might be possible from DC based media whores but this is a definite contender as anyone who watched Washington Journal during its campaign to impeach President Clinton can testify.

I noticed in one of the latest wire reports on getting the aid beyond the C-130s, that Frist will be travelling to India and Sri Lanka.
I guess that Jeb going with The Guy Who Resigned to SEAsia has opened the race for the 2008 Republican Presidential race. Congressman Leach is also going to SEAsia, but he actually is Chairman of the Subcommittee on East Asia and the Pacific (House Committee on International Relations).

And the experience may be one that changes Jeb's worldview for the better.
I'm sure brother Neil has told him about a few places in Thailand where he can get his "worldview" rocked like a mother.
And if Jeb brings anything back, will he at least declare it--unlike the last time when he and his wife tried to bring a boat-load of stuff back from Paris without putting it on their declaration sheets?
Yeah, I just love watching us put on a dog-and-pony show for the locals. Powell might serve a usual purpose, but Jeb? His ass is there to show people the Bush Dynasty is here to stay.
BTW, Japanese MP just kicked their pledge up to half a billion. If George is sober enough this morning, watch him go all in and offer more.

Not surprising that NPR would do this kind of reporting. They've been desperately trying to put a positive face on the Iraq invasion from the beginning. Add to all that the fact that conservative mole Juan Williams remains on their payroll, and you've got the radio equivalent of CNN.

OK, I could be wrong, but my understanding is that an LCAC is a hovercraft, so it is not going to be stopped by underwater obstacles, changes in the underwater geography, or floating debris (all of which you would have in combat landings).

From some of the comments, I get the impression that some don't appreciate the capabilities of the U.S. ships that are en route.
Of course, they couldn't be dispatched immediately because they had to be loaded for the task.
