I've always been a good customer of B&N. I would only go Amazon if what I was looking for couldn't be had at B&N when I wanted it. But that only happened twice. Amazon can burn in hell now.

That ChooseTheBlue web site looks a bit dodgy. It lists Time Warner (i.e. AOL) as 77% ($1,713,621) D and 23% ($511,860) R, and the New York Post (owned by News Corp) as 61% ($689,549) D to 39% ($434,224) R.

Would you still like the site as much if they became neutral in their presentation? In terms of raw data, they're just as useful to us red-state folks as to you all; could they (or someone) just provide the information neutrally and still be attractive?

From Pandagon:
While I'm generally enthusiastic about translating political beliefs into economic decisions, I'm a bit tentative at this trend. I'm ecstatic to drop corporations that violate ethical boundaries (sweatshops, child labor) or use their PACs to push an ideological agenda that I detest. That's why, to this day, I've never set foot in a WalMart. But cases like Amazon are more complicated. If you look at where the money's going, the trend is less ideological and more pay-to-play. Utah Republican Chris Cannon, for instance, got the most in congressional contributions, with $4,000. But he's been a leader on the internet tax moratorium. And following Chris Cannon is Democrat John Dingell, with $3,500.

There's something seriously wrong with choosetheblue.com list.
Going by their list, I should get a subscription to The Weekly Standard and the NY Post since both are listed as predominantly Democratic contributors -- because, as someone pointed out above, their corporate daddy, Rupert Murdoch's News Corp., has contributed more to Democrats than Republicans.
Obviously, The Weekly Standard, the NY Post and News Corp. are anything but progressive.

We think it's a little more complicated than looking at a list and picking blue companies. If we did so, then we would have to subject ourselves to 24 hours of FOX. Just the thought makes us hack up furballs. No thanks, we'll stick with Amazon for our cat toys.

I hate to point out something that I just realized when I mentioned my own CD: A lot of progressives, e.g. Molly Ivins and Jon Stewart, are perfectly happy to have the distribution that Amazon provides.
I mean, I have no problem with going through B&N or Powell's or my local Little Professor or wherever, but I somehow suspect that we're not going to hurt Amazon that much. On the other hand, remember when Franken's Lying Liars... came out, and blew the crap out of their best-seller list? That was us.
Amazon isn't the only game in town, but it's one of the most visible. We might be able to target some specific items and do the equivalent of a Google-bomb on them, while still giving most of our business to stores we prefer politically.

Do you have a locally owned hardware store? I'm lucky enough to have a very old family run hardware store (I think they've become a True Value franchise, which helps them with marketing costs) that I can get most anything at. Plus, they know what they're talking about.
The list I've been using is buyblue.org - they seem to have really accurate information.
Heh, yesterday someone at my office told me that we had to boycott Starbucks because they wouldn't donate free coffee to the troops in Iraq because (and she said this in the most sneering tone, like it was some sort of moral failing) "they don't support war efforts here or abroad". And then I smiled, put down my venti cappucino and said, "gee, then I guess I'll be spending more time there."

From the Choose The Blue site:
"Many people have commented about the fact that News Corp, owner of Fox News, is a blue company whereas they would have expected it to be red. News Corp has many subsidiaries and many of them are in the entertainment industry which is traditionally very blue. This is reflected in the political donations given by the employees of News Corp as a whole."
This may explain this oddity. http://tinyurl.com/3rmp4
Or not. Pretty weird, I thought.

Not only is Amazon Republican, they treat their workers like shit.
I'd prefer people used Booksense, the independent bookstore website, but avoiding Amazon is good for any number of reasons. Make sure you let them know you're not shopping with them anymore, and why. You'll get an email back from them saying they could basically give a shit, which will make the decision to avoid them all the sweeter...

Amazon is an outstanding service in all of it's forms. I use it at least twice a month. I read that they were a 60-40 contributor to the Thugs, and I immediately sent off an email explaining how I could not possible use them again and why. I also told the how sad I was about it because they are so great. The next day they wrote back a very nice email explaining how and why they make their political contributions. I still couldn't buy it, because as far as I'm concerned this is a war. Bummer, I loved Amazon.

i have bot books at b&n for some time now, and i am glad to hear that they are on our side.
off topic, but i was just over at a site called escapeartist.com. the proprieter, roger gallo, provides information on how to relocate to foreign countries. and he says that since the election here, interest has basically gone thru the roof! young, bright people-recent college grads, are basically looking to leave! and we are talking about relocating-not vacationing!
all the talk on this site from people who want leave is apparently more than just talk! people are really doing it.
most interesting.

i have bot books at b&n for some time now, and i am glad to hear that they are on our side.
off topic, but i was just over at a site called escapeartist.com. the proprieter, roger gallo, provides information on how to relocate to foreign countries. and he says that since the election here, interest has basically gone thru the roof! young, bright people-recent college grads, are basically looking to leave! and we are talking about relocating-not vacationing!
all the talk on this site from people who want leave is apparently more than just talk! people are really doing it.
most interesting.

I'm in need of a new clothes dryer. Looking over the list, I guess I'll buy GE, although they're red (67% to the Repugs). Maytag is 100% red and Sears ranks 76% red. What's a blue-blooded boy to do?

If I were serious about dropping Amazon, I would do my own research and not trust one site that says something. A reader posted something from Pandagon - in the comments section were some posts of people who worked there. I would prefer to shop where I want and like myself, and not have corporations giving ANY money to purchase my Congressman's or Senators vote.

FOX is a big contributor blue? So too is ABC/Disney? Didn't ABC/Disney Radio give us Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, and other right wingers who bash Democrats on a minute by minute basis?
I wonder if Choose Blue was setup by G.Gordo Liddy or if FOX and ABC are just setting up the pins for their bowling ball radio jocks to knock downs for the redneck audience.

I've been on a tear about this Amazon business after I read about it at Alterman's site a few weeks ago.
I'm usually good for at least $500 at Amazon for Xmas presents, but no more. I took my business elsewhere this year.
cobb24.com is another site tracking corporate political donations that I find useful. One nice feature is that they account for each corporation's donations via its PAC and also through its individual employees.
And they're tracking which ones are giving to the inaugural festivities.

Piss on the Internet tax moratorium. Just wtf is so damned special about the Internet? So damned special that corporations using it should get a break? Bullshit. Just who do you think is going to pay the taxes THEN? The poor, those w/out computers, or the facility to use the Internet, that's who.

Speaking of Starbucks...
It was Thursday morning when I stumbled upon a Starbucks' stunner: A looming espresso emergency at local stores.
Because a blizzard closed portions of Interstate 80 and Highway 50, no espresso shipments were able to get through to any Starbucks west of the Sierra Nevada. Furthermore, there won't be any until Monday.
While I could never get anyone officially to confirm this on the record, I heard about it first-hand. I saw it myself. I was there.
Late for work, I rushed into my favorite Starbucks in Vacaville where everybody knows my name. All the baristas know I take a simple grande house blend.
Fortunately for me, I stopped adding two shots of espresso a couple months ago. Others are not so fortunate, and I shudder to think of what they are enduring this New Year's Eve morning. What a terribly unfair way to start a new year... while I waited for my coffee, I overheard the baristas talking. A Starbucks official had called that morning to inform them that road closures prevented the espresso beans from being delivered from Carson City, Nev., where they are roasted. The next shipment would not arrive until Monday.
"We'll never make it,'' exclaimed one harried barista, her hair falling into her face as she pumped whipped cream into a cup.
About then, a young man from another Vacaville Starbucks came into the store, his face etched with desperation. His store was running out of espresso beans.
The shift supervisor, naturally, sent him away empty-handed.
With my espresso-less coffee in hand, I went back to The Reporter newsroom and started making phone calls. But what should have been a simple story turned into a daylong struggle to get somebody to acknowledge that there would be no espresso at local Starbucks.
One employee told me, off the record, that she had only six pounds of espresso left - enough for "about 212 hours,'' she said.
Another employee, who like all the others begged to remain nameless, said pretty much all of the stores were out of - or running out of - espresso. And yet, a barista at the Dixon Starbucks said she was not yet aware of the problem.
One Starbucks employee said she received a shipment from Seattle on schedule. It had included coffee makers, apple juices, pumpkin spices, sugar and frappacinos - but no espresso.
"The espresso is what we use in all of our bar drinks,'' she explained. "Mochas, lattes, cappacinos, basically everything except for frappacinos and our regular brewed coffee. Basically everything is made with espresso. The only thing we put into those machines is espresso.''
But there are alternatives, she added.
"What we do usually if we run out of espresso, we'll replace it with a dark roast, like Italian or French,'' she said. "But it isn't quite as smooth and caramelly.''
Customers will be told when they order drinks that ther

Already done. I'm glad you've switched. Barnes and Noble are good people. There's a lot to be said for real live book stores too.
When I don't (can't) do locally owned blue, I do B&N. Nice store. Great service. I actually know the people who work at the local Barnes & Noble & they will find anything for me.
Their online services are good too.
And, out here in red America, blue businesses matter even more.

Customers will be told when they order drinks that there is no espresso.
"We want to make them aware, but it's going to taste about the same. Unless you're an avid espresso drinker, you probably wouldn't even notice the difference. Unless you're getting a straight shot of espresso, nobody is going to know the difference ... I hope.''
One Starbucks public relations person returned my call to say that she had spoken to district managers in Solano County, who would say only that "their shipment has been delayed ... They have not been impacted by that.''
Huh?
That's like saying the turkey has imploded, but our Thanksgiving dinner won't be impacted.
Then, she added that she is not an official spokesperson for Starbucks, and could not connect me with one.
"Just attribute it to Starbucks,'' she said.
"But Starbucks is a corporation,'' I pointed out. "Corporations don't talk. People do.''
Sorry, she said.
She also wanted to know which employee had dared to allow me to interview her.
I refused to reveal her name. After all, I need my Starbucks every morning.

Atrios, it's sad how much power you have. All of these people have blindly converted to BN and all of these other "blue" companies. You should also have a post converting anybody who watches NBC or MSNBC to Fox News. NBC is red (evil) and Fox News is blue (awesome). In all seriousness though, this site looks rather messed up. Can anybody confirm this? I dunno, it seems too weird. I'll trust my instincts and still not watch Fox News.

Not really. NBC, a division of GE, is more monolithic about its contribution than News Corp. This was explained above and on the site. If you can't figure this out for yourself, than just don't fucking bother. It really ain't rocket science, kids. In fact, you have to be willfully obtuse to find this all so "complicated"...

Joe - there's a big diff between individuals voting with their wallets and government-sponsored destruction of individual careers based on absolutely no evidence 'cept your say-so.
Funny how you guys hate communism, but as soon as we on the left flex our economic muscle in the marketplace, the "genius of capitalism" needs you to rise to its defense. STFU.

The site shows that Amazon contributed mostly to Dems, so it is a mischaracterization to imply they aren't good Dems.
It's not good business or good citizenship to blindly contribute to only one party. Remember how crappy the Democratic Party is at the moment. You know what I regret? Giving all my money to the Dems and then having very little left to contribute to tsunami victims. The Dems ought to take a good chunk of their bank account and send it to Sri Lanka.

I second Nancy's post. Support independent bookdealers, which allows greater diversity of thought and opinions than if all our books pass through the corporate gatekeepers of most publishing houses.

It really ain't rocket science, kids.
You know what is rocket science though? Percents. Amazon has given more to blue than BN has. Great, take out Amazon and now we're ending up hurting blue more than red.
Okay, back to watching Fox News, sir. I'm such a great Democrat.

I'm in need of a new clothes dryer. Looking over the list, I guess I'll buy GE, although they're red (67% to the Repugs). Maytag is 100% red and Sears ranks 76% red. What's a blue-blooded boy to do?
Buy a perfectly good used dryer via the classifieds?
Do what we do in Vermont: beat your clothes on a rock in the stream behind the house, then hang them out to dry on a clothesline (clothesline manufacturers are invariably Dem-leaning).

Dave, Money apparently doesn't talk, since the dems are worse off than they were last year. Our leaders are doing what with that "mandate" from the grass roots? Triangulating on social security? I feel like a rube. Which makes B&N an even bigger rube. No, I'm not a troll, just irritated this morning.
(also my husband works for Amazon and we need his job!)

"So, when are you going to dump your Dell ?"
Not that I researched R vs. B, but according to FedEx tracking, my new Alienware AMD box is somewhere between Orlando and Eugene. Mmmmm, 64 bit processors (insert homeresque gurgling drool sound here).
Oh, and Right. My love of my country is precisely that which inpires my hatred of Bush (and other traitors/war criminals). Try to keep up, 'kay?

Also please don't shop at Overstock.com. They used to be my favorite online store, but then they started advertising the shit out of "Farenhype 9/11." I emailed the CEO to ask why they were doing that when I had never seen them advertise a specific product before -- I made no mention of political affiliation, simply asked why they were doing it. I got a big fuck you email back -- "we're doing it for economic purposes and no one ever questioned us when we carried "Farenheit 9/11" and it's not my problem that Michael Moore is an idiot." Ooooookay, hey, I was just asking a question, asshole. I complained directly to their board that their CEO was rude and arrogant to perfectly good customers, and they said, yeah, but he makes us money.

Patrick makes very good points here. Atrios clearly didn't look very carefully at the data, and also wrote a terrible post. "Choose Blue" implied that by buying from Amazon you were "choosing red," which clearly is not the case. You want to be a blind loyalist, that's your business, but don't insist on others doing it, too.

Here's the link to Choose the Blue's breakdown of News Corp. donations. Note Fox News, News America, Fox Sports, and Fox PAC all have donated more to the brownshirts than the Dems. HarperCollins and 20th Century Fox have donated more to Dems than the dark side.
Oh, and Choose the Blue shows Amazon as "blue" - except Barnes and Noble and affiliates is 98% blue compared to Amazon's 58%.
BTW, another good resource is Responsible Shopper.

Thanks, Atrios, for having the conviction to put your money where your mouth is. I, too, have cut Amazon off, and am trying to fuel my purchasing power to "blue" companies (Progressive Insurance, anyone?) It was hard after Burger King's pull out of Sinclair Broadcasting. A somewhat befuddled drive-through attendant nodded while I explained to her that I was buying a Whopper Jr. for my dog for political reasons...
Happy new year!

Don't waste your money on any piece of shit appliance manufactured (or, claimed) in the US. They're mostly all junk, and your service calls will be directed to India or elsewhere.
Give me a couple of days until I can talk to my friend, whom purchased an electromagnetic washer & dryer recently when they purchased a new (to them) home.
I can't remember the name, but they are made in Europe somewhere, and the efficency and quality of them are phenomenal. The cost was amazing, considering the little amount of energy they consume.
I'd be happy to get back with you on this.
BTW, we had to purchase a new refrigerator this fall, and after much research and shopping, ended up buying a Samsung. For the money, quality, energy efficiency, coverage and length of warranty, beat anything else hands down.

Thanks, Atrios, for having the conviction to put your money where your mouth is. I, too, have cut Amazon off, and am trying to fuel my purchasing power to "blue" companies
But Amazon is more blue than a lot of the blue companies you are going to be using in other industries, where the choice is between moderately blue and all red, all the time. Amazon gave $119,000 to Dems, B&N gave $102,000. If you go to the only remotely blue gas station, Shell, you will find that they gave $115,000 to Dems (54%).
I'm not saying that we shouldn't reward good behavior. I'm just saying that it's not as simple as this post and the discussion following, makes it.

I'm in need of a new clothes dryer. Looking over the list, I guess I'll buy GE, although they're red (67% to the Repugs). Maytag is 100% red and Sears ranks 76% red. What's a blue-blooded boy to do?
I need to find out if KitchenAid is red or blue. I've been looking and can't find a donation history for them.
Speaking strictly as a consumer, they get my vote for any appliance, quality products and: Best.Damn.Customer.Service.Anywhere.
Customer service like they have is definitely blue hearted.
Truth be told, even if they went red with their money, their customer service is so incredibly good that I'll probably still buy from them if they've got a reasonably competitive product.
We bought their dryer last year. I love it.

Happy 2005 all!
Can any Canadians vouch for B&N's service to Canada? Any problems with orders or delivery? Out of necessity, I'd previously been using Chapters/Indigo (much as I despise Heather Reisman, she who deemed Mein Kampf unsuitable for sale... grr... plus the fact they've swallowed a lot of smaller book places), but I found Amazon much better in terms of service and selection. I'm willing to try other places, but I know some companies out of the US sometimes have problems with their Canadian service. Not trying to weasel out of doing research, just seeing if any fellow Canucks have any personal accounts of dealings with Barnes & Noble.
(Oh, and Patrick? If you want to present a dissenting viewpoint, try being polite about it.)

Don't you mean corporation?
No, I meant company.
Atrios is owned and paid for.
Owned by whom? What evidence can you cite?
Truth hurts, huh?
Not at all. You must be mistaking me for someone who engages in hero worship and thinks it's wrong for people to generate revenue streams. 'sides, I still have no idea what 'truth' you're talking about.
Pithy one-liners add nothing to your cred or my understanding.

I'm in need of a new clothes dryer. Looking over the list, I guess I'll buy GE, although they're red (67% to the Repugs). Maytag is 100% red and Sears ranks 76% red. What's a blue-blooded boy to do?
giss
Consider a Bosch or a Miele? Expensive, I know, but there are plenty of options in clothes dryers, believe me.
In all honesty, I think it's more complex than which party gets a corporation's political donations. Like, for example, what are the values of the company? How do they treat their workers? What is their position on corporate and environmental responsibility? How much do they rely on outsourcing?
For example, UPS is technically "red", but they have a heavily unionized workforce and their workers retire with pensions and health benefits.
Do your homework, find out all you can about the company. Then make an informed choice about where you want to spend your hard-earned money.

You could always consider other factors. Last time I checked, only one of these companies manufuctured nuclear reactors, and had huge defense contracts.
So what is wrong with manufacturing nuclear reactors? The waste problems can be handled and they don't contribute to global warming.

It's not a question just of red or blue, but green -- as in environmentally responsible. And labor rights responsible.
For example, instead of Amazon vs. B&N, the question in books should be:
"What publishers are outsourcing the highest percentage of their printing to China?"

OT -- I just got back from a visit to NW Georgia. I was pleasantly surprised to see the local paper, the Rome News/Tribune take the Bush administration to task for its policies. LTE's were quite critical of the Bushies as well, although Rome is in the middle of Bible Belt country.
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution had an article by Ralph Peters called "The Defense Secretary We Have," which enumerated all of Rumsfeld's sins and why he should be fired.
http://tinyurl.com/67am4
There was also a "balancing" piece in there by Newt Gingrich that was so short of facts that it was laughable.
It IS after the elections but I expected to still see Bush bumper stickers everywhere. I didn't see many at all, and perhaps they don't think they need them around there since they are mostly Bushies. However, I only saw one Kerry bumper sticker in Georgia. After I left the state, I saw lots more.

(also my husband works for Amazon and we need his job!)
Tomato Observer
Tomato Observer - I really enjoy Amazon.com and as mentioned by others, percentagewise, they outdid B&N in the blue. I plan to continue to use them. Sometimes, I ordered through Eschaton, but probably not as often as I should've. I will probably also buy from B&N. - Depends on who has what at what price.
To whoever asked if someone else was going to get rid of their Dell? I have a Dell and it works perfectly fine. Money's already spent so no need to buy anything else. Just future purchases may be made to a different company. Who knows?
As far as other purchases, I plan to shop the self-employed businesses as much as I can.

If we want energy to power all our goodies like these computers we are all using and the clothes dryers discussed above, we have to get it from somewhere. Nuclear looks to be about as good a way as almost anything else when all the costs are considered. There are problems, but they can be handled.
Incidentally, did you know that the stuff coming out of the stacks at coal burning power plants often includes uranium and thorium?

Let's handle it then by making George W. Bush's Crawford ranch a nuclear waste repository.
We get our electricity and the president can show America that nuclear waste poses no threat to human health or the environment because hey, look, the president lives right next to a waste dump!

The fact that a single U.S. citizen has enough money to pony up 100 times more than the entire government has offered is sick.
The worst thing Shrub could have done after showing his ass and offering a pittance would be to follow it up with offering a pittance plus $1.
And he did.
He's a dick, an asshole and a puss all at the same time.

Short story: a girlfriend of mine

Lenny made sure her health
insurance paid every dime that
was necessary, kept her on the

and gave her the corporate jet
to take her to and from the hospital
where she was being treated.
What other company would do anything
even remotely similar?

I'm not saying that we shouldn't reward good behavior. I'm just saying that it's not as simple as this post and the discussion following, makes it.
Granted. You've got to use a bit of common sense when interpreting the data -- chump change NewCorp donates to the Dems can't make up for the damage they do on a daily basis through Fox News. However, when the choice is between a company that clearly has its heart in the right place (Barnes & Noble), versus one that is trying to hedge its bets (Amazon), the choice to me is clear. Barnes & Noble didn't give as much, in total, because it isn't the online monolith that Amazon is.
BTW, did anyone notice that buyblue.org has taken their list down?
Temporarily down. We are combing over our numbers with a fine tooth comb because we think credibility is important as well as legal defensibility.
Must've gotten some guff. Maybe they're having an impact?

Yeah, right. That's why central Washington is one big Superfund site courtesy of Hanford and why cancer is rampant in the Tri-Cities area.
I said if "handled properly" When the Hanford disaster was created the approach to getting rid of just about any kind of waste was to either burn it or just dump it in a hole in the ground. Doesn't work for nuclear waste any better than for chemical waste.

Isn't it a bit one dimensional to choose your buyer solely because some list says they donate to Dems? What other corporate causes do the same companies give their money too? Chooseblue doesn't say, but how do you know that in buying from one company that is marginally more blue than the next you're not also giving money to causes you really don't support? So, for example, according to that list Starbucks is "good" because it gives money to Dems. Do we still feel so good about it if we factor in the reality that Starbucks invests bigtime in illegal West Bank settlements? Why not just encourage people to buy books from independent booksellers instead of declaring big companies worthy of support solely because they give a bigger corporate donation to the Dems than the GOP?

I'm one of the founders of buyblue.org. I just want to set the record straight about Choosetheblue.com's methodology that seems to be confusing. They rate corporations on percentage of total employee donations. That's how Amazon becomes blue in their eyes. It's just a different methodology. We at buyblue.org take a different approach. We only focus on PAC and executive donations because we want to take corporate influence out of politics. Individual employees usually donate out of principle - which is something we want to encourage. We've taken down our list for the time being because we are in the process of creating a much more comprehensive site that will judge companies not just on their political donations but how they treat the employees, consumers and environment. Our ultimate goals is to use the power of the free market to bring sustainable change to entire industries without the need for political change which, at this point, can take years. We have the power right now to encourage industry to curb pollution, increase employee benefits and take into account how their actions affect the citizens that keep them in business. We can do this by shifting our buying dollars to corporations that treat their employees and consumers like people instead of lines on a spreadsheet. Let's make the Costco's of the world (that pay a fair wage and offer all employees medical benefits) the model and envy of Wall Street, as opposed to Walmart.
The reason corporations resist regulation and change is because they feel it will hurt their bottom line. If they can actually make more money by being ethical they will have no choice but to move in that direction. This will benefit individuals AND corporations in the long run.
The beauty of this movement is that we are not asking corporations to have a conscious, they will only have to react to market demands in order to stay competitive. Imagine corporations having to be ethical to stay competitive! All weve been asking for in the last couple of decades have been lower prices well, its time we started thinking long term beyond our own needs to the needs of our children and grandchildren. We cant expect politicians and corporate executives to care about such things when their eyes are only focused on their next election or quarterly statement. In essence we are cutting out the political middleman and using the internet to collectively vote with our dollars and create real change.
We are in the process of creating a sophisticated database that will rate corporations on a multitide of categories. We are in dire need of programmers who can donate whatever time they have to give to this project. Email me at buyblue@gmail.com if have this kind of experience and would like to help.

Banana Pubic is a subsidiary of The Gap, which also happens to be Strom's pet name for my cooch. The Gap is red, but in my case, more pink than red, except when I've used Strom's toilet scrubber to pleasure myself.

On December 27 Kos linked to an article in something called the American Conservative indicating that some members of the republican party are members of the reality-based community.
Troll asswipes, know that if only a few people change sides, if only a few people stop buying into the lies, and things change dramatically.

Amazon, B&N, and Borders have caused the death of many, many indie bookstores (the latter two strategically open stores right near indies to knock out their business).
If you want to support Democratic businesses and also support independent, then go with Powells and Booksense. The latter links to whatever indie bookstore is nearest your location.

I did buy my climbing holds this year from E-Grips through Amazon. The holds are awesome, and Amazon handled the account well.
I posted the smarter alternative to spending a few weeks back on my own blog too. This research lead me to an excellent local supplier of lumber and GAF roof shingles. GAF is the way to go with roofing. And Lowes is doing solar in CA on their roofs.
I hope they also start looking into corporate culture as a family asset. Metroplitan Life is family friendly, as is Bank Of America.

Completely OT, but here's an idea for some enterprising individual: invent a nailclipper that bags the clippings as you go. That way, you don't have to go searching for the ones that went flying off into the stratosphere, never to be rediscovered until the middle of the night when you're en route to the bathroom barefoot.
P.S. Guy, GREAT shot of the cat!

You're current blındness to realıty ıs demonstrated ın the last 20 years worth of electıons (yeah, Slıck Won...But now, Amerıca regrest ıt!).
You're missing the fact that conservatives have always won elections (in spite of being outside of the mainsream of American culture).
1.) The South was a one party totalitarian state until 1964. This allowed southerners in congress to amass a lot of seniority and influence. In the north, there were competetive elections.
2.) The Senate is biased towards small, rural conservative states. Wyoming and New York both get two Senators.
3.) The federal government passes out more "pork" to conservative states than liberal states. New York has a private sector. Mississippi really doesn't. This means that voters in "red America" get to the polls in a way voters in "blue America" don't. They're livlihoods depend on the government.
4.) You're missing one thing. That Massachussetts liberal went home to a better life than that Mississippi Republican. He has more money, more education, more options. Politics just isn't as important to him. I doubt he drives around looking at city halls around his neighborhood to check for nativity scenes.
So gloat all you want. It won't make your life any better.

Yes, but it was the same one under a different name. This week, he thinks he's stepping on the toes of the liberal elite by mocking our idols.

Thanks Tomato Observer and others who pointed out that the Amazon discussion is not so simple. While it is certainly telling to examine which businesses give to which party, it doesn't tell the whole story. Starbuck's supports Democratic candidates but has lousy practices that seek to put independent coffee shops out of business. I think this might have been a kind of a reactionary move by Atrios, especially considering that Amazon is more blue than red. Isn't that kind of like punishing our friends? Let's concentrate on places that really have an evil agenda, like Cintas and Walmart.

Susan in terms of the liberal elite, what is reality and what is not is often disputed, however reputable sources indicate that for the conservative side, a mirror is necessary, finding the following to be true when the conservative mindset is viewed straight on. Being pragmatic about ones appearance when donning the mantle as a cleric of the radical right is not pretty. Your mentors have a bit of a problem when presenting themselves in full measure to all the public. A description:
"The insect head is sometimes referred to as the head-capsule, and is the insects feeding and sensory centre, and supports the eyes, antennae and jaws of the insect. (Note -: insects do not breath through their mouths but through their thoracic and abdominal spiracles) The upper-mid portion is called the 'frons' below this is the 'clypeus' and below this the 'labrum' to either side of which may be seen the edges of the 'mandibles' in some insects various aspects of the 'maxilliary' palps may extend beyond and or below these even when viewed from front on."

Jared Diamond has a great article over at the NYT:
The Ends of the World as We Know Them
From the article:
A society contains a built-in blueprint for failure if the elite insulates itself from the consequences of its actions. Thats why Maya kings, Norse Greenlanders and Easter Island chiefs made choices that eventually undermined their societies. They themselves did not begin to feel deprived until they had irreversibly destroyed their landscape.
Could this happen in the United States? Its a thought that often occurs to me here in Los Angeles, when I drive by gated communities, guarded by private security patrols, and filled with people who drink bottled water, depend on private pensions, and send their children to private schools. By doing these things, they lose the motivation to support the police force, the municipal water supply, Social Security and public schools. If conditions deteriorate too much for poorer people, gates will not keep the rioters out. Rioters eventually burned the palaces of Maya kings and tore down the statues of Easter Island chiefs; they have also already threatened wealthy districts in Los Angeles twice in recent decades.

why it drives them so nuts with their "limousine liberal" bullshit while the repuke elite, whose balls they lick shiny, count their gluttony of money...
Something to do with hypocrisy, as best I can remember: the right-wing guy explaining it to me was saying "gargle blather hypocrisy woof woof tweet tweet" just before the red bullshit light started flashing and I woke up in Mexico City. I never did get to say to him, "Emulate Jesus much?" I think the mantises got him.

The Republican elite doesn't want to make their kids go to school with blacks.
That and the fact that the white male power structure wants to wrest what little power women have gained in the past thirty years explains about 90% of what drives these people nuts.
I love that they have their panties in a twist over the Kinsey movie. God they still can't over the fact that women can enjoy sex with a loving partner. I remember when I was single (the dark ages) the clean cut types would complain that you had to have long hair to get laid. No. . .but I think a lot of women figured out that the long hairs took their time and tried to please their partners.
Or maybe all that guiter playing strengthened their fingers for, shall we say, extra curricula activities, if ya know what I mean.

Atrios,
maybe the trolls had been secretly laughing that your were linking to the wrong bookstore. Now you took their toy away.
It's always great to hit 'em in the pocket, but that's just a part of it... let's all remember in the New Year to keep talking about the issues to people...
Maybe writing your paper about that crummy Ann Coulter comment is a good first step: expose these people for what they really believe in...

When the fundies got their grubby little stinking hands on the public largesse through faith-based-pork, that's it. They now have unlimited resources with no transparency to force their will on this entire society on every front. I've offered the only solution which is to secede although knowing how impractical that would be. The only solution is to leave. You can all fight them until they wear you all down to a nub but I understand how impossible that is now.

I remember when I was single (the dark ages) the clean cut types would complain that you had to have long hair to get laid
And the guy at State U who majored in "Business" couldn't quite understand why the guitarist in the local bar band was getting more than he was.
So he contented himself with jerking off and speculating about how all the chicks would like him when he was rich. Later on, he started posting crap on the internet about how "all women only like assholes".
His Russian mail order bride wound up filing for divorce when she got all his money and her green card.

I'll tell you why ıt matters. Beacuase earlıer you saıd Rethugs don't want to send theır kıds to school wıth blacks. More bullshıt lıberal hypocrısy!
They don't. Once again, you're getting caught up in gossip, as opposed to sociology and hard news.
You're a textbook example of a Fox News watcher.
Ignore the mass of people for two famous examples.
Jimmy Carter sent his daughter to public school too, I believe, so there goes your examples there.

Fuck the rest of the Worls.
You mean the "rest of the world" that a) has more money than us; b) is buying our country's debt c) is connected to us financially, socially, environmentally; and d) is where most of us have relatives?
China and Saudi Arabia are well on their way to owning us. Doesn't that bother you a little bit?
Europe's already a bigger market than the US, and they have nuclear weapons. Know what that makes them, dumbshit? A superpower.
But hey, pump your tiny fist in the air if it makes you feel good. Unfortunately for you, you live on a tiny little ball of rock with lots of other people, and you're not always going to get your way. Get over it now, and avoid the rush.

for your next conversation with those red state relatives, you might use this (from uggabugga):
JOE REPUBLICAN
Joe gets up at 6 a.m. and fills his coffeepot with water to prepare his morning coffee. The water is clean and good because some tree-hugging liberal fought for minimum water-quality standards.
With his first swallow of coffee, he takes his daily medication. His medications are safe to take because some stupid commie liberal fought to insure their safety and that they work as advertised.
All but $10 of Joe's medications are paid for by his employer's medical plan because some liberal union workers fought their employers for paid medical insurance - now Joe gets it too. He prepares his morning breakfast, bacon and eggs. Joe's bacon is safe to eat because some girly-man liberal fought for laws to regulate the meat packing industry.
In the morning shower, Joe reaches for his shampoo. His bottle is properly labeled with each ingredient and its amount in the total contents because some crybaby liberal fought for his right to know what he was putting on his body and how much it contained.
Joe dresses, walks outside and takes a deep breath. the air he breathes is clean because some environmentalist wacko liberal fought for laws to stop industries from polluting our air.
He walks to the subway station for his government-subsidized ride to work. It saves him considerable money in parking and transportation fees because some fancy-pants liberal fought for affordable public transportation, which gives everyone the opportunity to be a contributor.
Joe begins his work day. He has a good job with excellent pay, medical benefits, retirement, paid holidays and vacation because some lazy liberal union members fought and died for these working standards.
Joe's employer pays these standards because Joe's employer doesn't want his employees to call the union. If Joe is hurt on the job or becomes unemployed, he'll get a worker compensation or unemployment check because some stupid liberal didn't think he should lose his home because of his temporary misfortune.
Its noontime and Joe needs to make a bank deposit so the can pay some bills. Joe's deposit is federally insured by the FSLIC because some godless liberal wanted to protect Joe's money from unscrupulous bankers who ruined the banking system before the GreatDepression.
