Thank heavens Xmas season is over I can sleep again. It seemed that the swells weren't spending as freely on their entertainment around here. They must have the money since Bush has been transfering it to them as fast as possible but they're hoarding it. They're as vulgar as ever and as boring. I'm not sure what this all means but I'm just glad it's over for another year.

P.S. GO Iowa!! What a lovely end to Rick Saban's LSU career. Losing as time expired after scoring with :48 seconds left in the 4th quarter.
I've despised Saban after he signed a multi year/million $$ contract at Michigan State (my alma matter) then promptly left after less than 2 years to coach at LSU.
I hope the Miami Dolphins (his next job) go 2-14 for the next 5 years.

Do what I do, read a biography or autobiography of someone like Nelson Mandela. It slaps me in the face and tells me that falling into despair isn't a luxury I've got a right to. And always remember I.F. Stone and Molly Ivins, you've got to have your fun while you're trying because you can't be guaranteed success.
I'll add have the fun because it's yours by right and it pisses the fascist bastards off.

If you can lay your hands on a copy, it's well worth checking out. Some things I never knew -
Kurt was a Zeppelin fan (there are tracks of them doing 'Heartbreaker' and 'Moby Dick'). And his love of the Vaselines and Huddie Ledbetter is quite endearing.
The package gets bonus points for not a single Courtney Love mention.
I'm a Nirvana fan, so I really dug the whole thing. Your mileage may vary.

I was going to rent Blue Velvet and Eraserhead as well, as I think they are the only two Lynch movies I haven't seen. Dune was pretty crap, trying to pull it off with 70's technology was a bad idea as was trying to put it all in one movie.
Anyone know how many series there were of Twin Peaks? Because the last episode I rented ended with the FBI guy being possessed and that was it. Did it continue after that?

Isabella Rossellini is the bee's knees.
She was on The Daily Show a couple of weeks ago and was charming as all get out.
As for Blue Velvet, I found it much more creepy than sexy. Well, maybe call it creepysexy.
Hm. That sounds like it should be the title of a Prince album.

WKD--are you kidding about Penny Marshall? She was either Laverne or Shirley on TV and Garry Marshall is either her father or brother. She directed Tom Hanks in Big, among other movies, and she likes to tell the story of throwing the writers off the Big set when one had the nerve to make a suggestion.

If you use the entire chicken, it's perversion.

A recent CNN/USA Today/Gallup Poll showed him with a 49% job approval rating - a wretched crazy train leading toward a slow-burning political death if you are a student of history - but even his closest advisors are getting worried less than a month after he declared that he had a mandate and intended to expend the political capital granted by his re-election, which since that time has amounted to little more than four weeks in the village stocks getting pelted by rotten fruit and rocks."

WKD - Let me try to explain without ruining it for you. It is a very freaky movie and Lynch used a lot of techniques that as far as I can recall have never been used the way he does. It is hard to watch because Lynch made it that way. It is excruciating in parts, and he does that with the sound track and the general freakiness of lighting and characters and situation.
I found it extremely difficult to watch, and so did both people I watched it with the two times. Mr. Tena had to leave the room for a bit during a couple of segments.

One of my guilty pleasures (along with Ed Wood movies) are those Japanese monster flicks.
I like the MST3K versions the best.
Does anyone know which film it was were godzilla stops in the middle of a big battle scene and plays xylophone on the spines of the gigantic dinosaur looking creature? that always cracked me up.

It is hard to watch because Lynch made it that way. It is excruciating in parts, and he does that with the sound track and the general freakiness of lighting and characters and situation.
Was it my imagination, or did the lighting get dimmer and dimmer as the movie progressed? It evoked that uneasy feeling I get around dusk if I don't have a light on.
Only movie to ever literally leave me with a bad taste in my mouth.

A terrible mistake has been made. Clay Aiken is not gay; he's just very cheerful.
Ummmm, it's my considered opinion that folks are all born sexual, and that sexuality--like intelligence, in Howard Gardner's work--is complex and not monolithic. We are all born with some greater or lesser degree of affinity for one (or more) sexual orientations. Bi-sexuality, or multi-sexuality is probably a much more widely distributed sexual characteristic than most folks would feel comfortable knowing about...

It was we who brought up Rossellini in the thread a few weeks ago about women who could make you change your mind: our point in BV vs NP was that in NP you had this kind of reversal which would be better than just staying "the bitch," and besides BV struck us as cowardly, as taking the audience to the abyss and then turning right fucking around back into the very unsmashed illusions in the beginning (this was also something like Ebert's opinion of it). But Pauline Kael called the bed-engulfment scene in Eraserhead the most perfectly erotic thing in cinema (not exact words).

Am I missing the point on this Social Security thing?
What is the problem that Bush is going to fix? I don't remember there being any big AARP rallys or talking-heads to announce any pitfalls in the system.
As Edith Bunker said on All in the Family..."If it isn't broke...Don't Fix It...".
What I find strange is that the change is not for the people on SS or us baby-boomers, but its for someone else. The BS about young workers investing in their future is a smoke-screen to hide the real reason for such a massive change.
Besides, Bush did not win by a landslide nor does he have a mandate. All he has is the Congress ready to pencil-whip whatever he wants. Harry Reid may known when to dance and when to fight, but I don't think will have a chance to step up to the plate.
Am I missing the point on this Social Security thing?
What is the problem that Bush is going to fix? I don't remember there being any big AARP rallys or talking-heads to announce any pitfalls in the system.

"We are all born with some greater or lesser degree of affinity for one (or more) sexual orientations."
WoodyGuthrie'sGuitar
Interesting comment. In my waking hours, I have never considered having a homosexual relationship. However, I occasionally dream about having sex with another woman and it is very erotic. I wake up confused.

But for kinky sexy - you can't beat the scene in The Night Porter when she breaks that glass in the bathroom and he comes and steps down on her hand.
i dunno .. but the kink found in "caligula" and another lesser-known flick "52-pickup" kinda raise debauchery to an art form ... i think these are the only two flicks that can still give larry flynt a hard on

Back to Clay Aiken...I read somewhere that Clear Channel won't play his music. Clear Channel not playing an artist is enough to make me buy their work whether I like it or not. I actually know nothing about Clay Aiken, but I have decided I am going to support people on our side, like the Dixie Chicks and Cher even though I may not love or even like their music. It's time to stick together.

filkertom,
I got really pissed at the fixed cannon Apaches, and Godzilla out-running a torpedo underwater, and an Abrams tank being stepped on and crushed. It's like people who think terrorists could've shot down that space shuttle. Fuckheads guide to technology.
I'm pedantic, so that shit really bugs me.
And the plot sucked anyway.

This thread is already making me hold my tummy in delighted laughter.
An Ed Wood western!? Kewl beyond words. I've got the soundtrack -- as in, god help us all, a released album with the entire audio track, of Orgy of the Dead.
David (Austin) -- y'know, I've never seen that one. I heard from a few people it was great, from a few that it was terrible, and from far too many that it was just boring, and boring is the worst crime I feel a movie can commit (besides being hideously offensive, of course). So, you think it's pretty good?
watertiger --[snort][spew]
Eli -- if she's living with you, sure. And it's not a dire macho challenge -- I know some folks out there have got to have a great hunk o' cinematic badness. However, I do have enough stuff over here to turn your teeth green and make strong men Quayle, not even counting the MST3K collection. The Conqueror in widescreen, Robot Monster in 3D, an actual un-MSTied copy of The Wild, Wild World of Batwoman....

Good stuff, sport. John Glover is the *man*.
Which reminds me of another couple offbeat movies, Ed And His Dead Mother (Glover, along with Steve Buscemi, Ned Beatty, Gary Farmer, and Miriam Margolyes), and Repo Man (same director or producer as EAHDM, I think). Yeah, everyone knows Repo Man, but no-one knows Ed And His Dead Mother, and it's a damn shame.

Moad-dib,
Josh Marshall has been doing great work with regard to the "crisis" of SS. The bottom line - there is no crisis. It's all made up.
The right wing did the same thing (on a much smaller scale) in my hometown when they created a "crisis" regarding parental notification for clubs at a local high school. It was all of the sudden critically important that parents allow or disallow their son/daughter to participate in a given club when...you guessed it...students formed a Gay Student Alliance at the school.
My point being - there was no crisis here, but they effectively set the narrative to indicate that there was.

I've got the soundtrack -- as in, god help us all, a released album with the entire audio track, of Orgy of the Dead.
My gf quotes that on www.moviequote.net periodically. Everyone on the Horror page now knows that "Topless interpretive dance" means Orgy Of The Dead.
if she's living with you, sure.
She's not, alas. But maybe this will give her an incentive! I'm not a diehard collector, so you probably have a leg up on, ahem, quality. But I'm incredibly unselective and omnivorous, so there's still a good chance I have more quantity.
Plus I have a B&W (variably tinted) musical comedy Western from Czechoslovakia called Lemonade Joe.

and excited?
well, why not?
i have noted here before (ad nauseam, i'm sure) that to parse sexuality as this absurd culture does is about as sensible as trying to fence in the ocean...(fence in the ocean, or fence-in the ocean, are both about equal as far as futility goes)...
humans are but another branch of the anthropoid apes, let's not forget. Our closest relatives, the bonobo (which will soon become extinct), are pan-sexual: within the troop hierarchy, of course, but everybody does everybody else all the time...by mutual consent, and low to no coercion...

Yes, I really like The Fifth Element. Gary Oldman plays a pretty cool bad guy, and Milla Jovovich is certainly easy on the eyes.
Some of it is really over the top. Chris Tucker's role as DJ Ruby Rhod is the classic narcissistic media personality, the choice of actors for the roles is perfect.
I liked Naked Lunch as well, but it was hard to watch the first time. The second time I saw it, it was much better.

Waters' last bit was all about moron morality (a plague of unrestrainable and deeply comical sexuality afflicts a "normal" community). He has the only line worth hearing in any Chucky movie (in the trailer to the last one, he laughs photographing Britney Spears crashing her car, saying of the extraordinarily boring doll who caused the crash, "God bless the little people!").
and needless to say Cecil B Demented is the definitive feature-length screed on Hollywood. (hey hey MPAA how many movies did you censor today?)

Incog, Naked Lunch is pretty much incoherant. The book is totally incoherant.
Tena, Mullholland Drive put me in a down state for about a week afterwards, and bugged me for some time afterwards as well. It was the first Lynch movie that I saw and the way he fucks with your moods is the reason I like him so much. So much pathos, such a little biscuit.
Filkertom,
Yeah, fuck yeah. As I mentioned, MI2 is about the only other one I can remember being as bad.

I love John Waters. I loved Hairspray and Pink Flamingos. I don't know what Waters is going to do now that Divine is dead.
My two favorites are Hairspray and Pecker. (I'd include Pink Flamingos in that, but it defies categorization. (My favorite review is "Like an explosion in a septic tank, this movie has to be seen to be believed.)) He's made quite a few films since Divine died, but I agree, there's something missing in them. I also miss Edith Massey.
The DVDs of his movies are pretty well done, too. His running commentaries are the best I've heard.

I have a B&W (variably tinted) musical comedy Western from Czechoslovakia called Lemonade Joe.

Ewww. Oh, man, that is so wrong.
I've also got the bad musicals collection, although it's a good deal smaller. I got the David Hasselhoff Jekyll & Hyde for, like three bucks, and I have the original cast albums for Bat Boy and Flowers for Algernon (starring Michael Crawford!), among others. I'd rather musicals were good, y'know?

A trip to All Movie Guide informs us that Penny and Garry Marshall's original name was Marsciarelli and she got her start on the Ted Mack Amateur Hour, though it doesn't say what she did--presumably something other than singing.
Also, in case you were wondering why Jimmy Buffet did the soundtrack for Rancho Deluxe, he's screenwriter Thomas McGuane's brother-in-law.

I think Cronenberg may be the only director who could have made it. I loved Naked Lunch, but I really like Cronenberg. Dead Ringers is one of the most amazing movies ever. And it is erotic, too, in a very disturbing way.

On a serious note, peep this:
Statement of Democracy 21 President Fred Wertheimer on Changes in House Ethics Rules Being Proposed by House Republican Leaders
According to Democracy 21 President Fred Wertheimer, "The ethics changes being proposed by House Republican leaders would fundamentally undermine and damage the House ethics rules, and would constitute the biggest backtracking we have ever seen on ethics standards in the House."
Wertheimer said, "If House Republican leaders are allowed to prevail, they will have gutted the single most important ethics standard in the House and turned House Majority Leader Tom DeLay's multiple ethics transgressions into acceptable conduct for all House members."

I loved ("Twin Peaks". Even when it disappointed me.
And it was pretty disappointing. Supposedly, it was origially a mini-series (four or six episodes), then the network kept wanting more, and Frost and Lynch complied. Good website about the show here.
And remember - the owls are not what they seem!

Not to change your subject(s) but
I regularly check Drudge's site and it just dawned on me that he doesn't have any prominant or permanent links to any relief organizations on his page.
Now, I know the Internets is full of links to various relief groups' sites. It is tough to avoid finding pages or sites which don't have such links.
But, Drudge always boasts of his number of readers. So, why is it that he isn't prompting his readership* to donate?
So I was wondering if anyone would want to shame him into putting down some permanent, prominant links on his page?
If you run a blog, just do your usual thing: make surly citations of how self-absorbed Drudge is and how he "covers" the Tsunami daily
and yet he doesn't seem to get down with compassion by facilitating, and encouraging, donations..
Frankly, any of these right-wing nut jobs should be shamed if they don't show that they have open arms and are, in appearance, just hugging themselves.
So who wants to outfox GOopers in the shame game?
Say it loud, say it proud, YOU care about people's lives and the Republican party aparatchiks don't.
The reason I'm suggesting this is we and people we know need to hold a candle to these idiots feet. To shame Drudge into putting up links to UNICEF and other groups may seem insignifigant, but, if these people, the Republican echo chamber, feel that they are the owners of higher standards and values, we--the "unwashed masses"--need to show people that they are just hypocrites or charletons, or both.
*(that is so subjective of a term nowadays; as if Drudge is creating content for his site visitors on a daily basis...pfah)

Funny you should say that, because I remember getting very frustrated with the show after the first 6 episodes or so, because it just seemed like they were spinning their wheels and making it up as they went along. I ended up abandoning the show in disgust, and apparently missed out on a whole bunch of freaky shit.

Could be the terrifying/hilarious OBGYN inspection scene.
"This is solid gold! THE INDUSTRY STANDARD! MY INSTRUMENTS ARE PERFECT, YOU ARE THE ONE WHO'S WRONG!"
everybody's doctor's office nightmare. It's not like it's a purely female thing, you could easily do the same scene with a proctologist or a prostate exam or a circumcision.

...it just seemed like they were spinning their wheels and making it up as they went along.
To an extent, though there's also a line of thought, supposedly advanced by Lynch and Frost, that there was never going to be an actual "solution" to Laura Palmer's murder - it was just the mechanism to expose Twin Peaks' seamy underbelly, a la "Blue Velvet." You can pretty much go through the list of first season episodes and just pick out the Lynch-directed ones as the ones that hang together.
The message from outer space tie dissapointed me...
They never really developed it, but at the time, I thought it was pretty nervy - this was before "X-Files" pretty much exhausted the alien conspiracy thing.

Filkertom, One of the stars of the Broadway production of Hairspray is a good friend of my oldest sons. She is a nice kid from Muskegon who is 20 years old. Amazing.
I saved the review from the Times for my son, here is what they said about the young lady, "And if the ensemble of high school students doesn't have the same disciplined precision as when "Hairspray" opened, its leading teenagers are, if anything, more vital than the originals. Certainly they are a sexier bunch.
The boundary-breaking Tracy is now played by Carly Jibson, in her Broadway debut. She exudes a bright zeal and conviction that rivals that of her Tony-winning predecessor, Marissa Jaret Winokur. Ms. Jibson, who is 19, combines the nubile glow of adolescence with the confidence of an old pro. When this Tracy sings of her devotion to the local teen idol, Link Larkin (Richard H. Blake), she elicits the sound of popping hormones from Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman's heartfelt pastiche ballads."

I still don't give a shit. Ted Nugent moving to Crawford, Texas means 2 less republican fuckwads here in Michigan.
So, it's a +2 for the Democratic party I say - since his wife moved with him.

I saw most of Twin Peaks post X-Files so I think aliens are dumb. There's one series that went on too long.
Woody, don't think I've seen that one. What is it about?

On the commentary to the Criterion for DR, Cronenberg couldn't say enough nice things about Bujold. She's a consummate professional and she's got that French actress thing where she's sexy while looking ordinary.

Invitation to Love.
I remember being shocked to learn that Passions (Spike on Buffy The Vampire Slayer was a big fan) was a real show. Even watched an episode or two. Weirdest subplot was the witch's talking doll who yearned to become a real boy. Apparently, he finally succeeded by getting on the list, and eventually receiving, a heart transplant...

In about 1969, i got outraged letters from some uptight readers of the paper in Albuquerque for which I then wrote, when i used the word 'nubile' in a piece describing a performance of traveling African dance company. The actual phrase was, iirc, "The youthfful dancers exuded a giddy, semi-nude excitement that gave new meaning to the word 'nubility'." Not William Burroughs by any means, certainly...yet it raised a small tumult of protest...

The tool-making bit was actually from Cronenberg's life; when he was a student he worked with a metalsmith and his project was gynecologic instruments for mutant women (of course gynecologic; never mind that being mutants they could've just been "surgical instruments for mutants").
Also, while staying in France a retired doctor friend gave him a book cataloging old medical woodcuts, and that's the source for the images in one of the best opening sequences in the eighties (was that the early nineties?).

Fargo is my favorite Coen movie, but those boys are incredible. Every damn movie is completely different and they are all good, right from Blood Simple forward.
I knew the story of Dead Ringers had been altered, but it does seem very plausible. I've been to see at least 2 out and out sadistic OB-Gyns. I never went back - one visit was more than enough. But they are out there. One laughed his head off while I was screaming. I've never had anyone hurt me that badly in a doctor's office. If I hadn't been so young and stupid I would have turned him in to the state medical board.

filkertom,
Ran was the first one I saw. Just randomly on late one friday night. Thought it looked like fun and four or however many hours later I was sitting there with my jaw open and thinking, what the FUCK was that? It was fucking spectacular. Seven Samurai was great, and so were Sanjuro and Yojimbo. Is there a third one of those? Because I believe Leone based his Man-With-No-Name movies on them, and I think there were three of those.
I did Throne of Blood for a high school history project, it was neat. The movie was based on Macbeth, and is similar to a period in japanese history as well. If you reverse all of the characters in Macbeth, you basically get the historical truth. Wierd in a way.

Do-des-ka'den is a parale about the reconstruction of Japan, really. It's kurusawa's first color film and it is not much like his sagas or his Shakespeare covers...it is an homage, to the industry and the diligence of his people recovering from the devasatation...(or not; the ambiguity may have undermined the film's reception)...
The central character is a homeless, probably orphaned boy, of perhaps 15 years, damaged by birth or the war or both, who 'pretends' (in quotes because HE'S not pretending) to be a trolley-driver making his rounds through the city and the people as they struggle to rebuild from the ruins. The title refers to the onomotopoetic device which the boy mutters to imitate the wheels of the real trolleys of which he is so enamored.

Harp of Burma? Do you mean The Burmese Harp? That's a Kon Ichikawa film.
I once saw a (supposedly) rarely shown Japanese film made in the 1960s, about a soldier stationed on a beach during WW2 waiting for an invasion that never comes. Sounds completely pointless and boring, but it was magnificent.

Re Sanjuro and For a Few Dollars More--The related movies ore Yojimbo and Fisrful of Dollars, both based on Dashiell Hammett's The Glass Key (also a movie). The common plot thread is for a lieutenant to seemingly betray his boss and work for a rival. HHe connvinces everyone, including the boos that he's switched allegiences, but has really stayed loyal. The Coens recycled this plotline for Miller's Crossing

Watching the corporate bowls gives me a headache, yet I cant stop watching.
I wonder how many people refuse to see the influence the corporate raiders are having over their lives?
Did anyone see the new commercial Texaco has?A person riding around in a new Ford Mustang looking for gas at a Texaco. What a sight, yet somehow I get the felling no one but me noticed the inplications.
Blockbuster has a great stupid ad,too bad I cant remember the stupidity of it.

I know about Fistful and Yojimbo (and Last Man Standing) - I was just saying that their respective sequels are completely independent of each other.
I don't really see the Glass Key/Miller's Crossing (now *there's* a bloody great movie) connection, since the protagonist in Fistful Of Yojimbo is a stranger who comes into town and starts playing rival forces off against each other.

Eli - I have not seen those, but I'd like to. I understand that they are really good.
We got off on the director who made Tampopo and have seen both of his A Taxing Woman movies, which we loved, and one he did about a funeral that is just excellent.
I'm a huge fan of Haruki Murakami, the Japanese author who's about my age, who has written a whole bunch of really good books - Hard Boiled Wonderland and the End of the World; Dance, Dance, Dance; A Wild Sheep Chase; The Wind-up Bird Chronicles. I wish someone would make a movie from one of them. He's got a new book out in English - I need to remember to look for it.

If you like horror, "Tell Me Something" and "Into The Mirror" are both very good. I probably have a few more, but they're not coming to mind at the moment.

filkertom,
I didn't like Braveheart to tell the truth, and it is pretty much the same movie as the Patriot. I'd have to say that the dialogue in the Lethal Weapon movies was nicely scripted, because in the 3rd movie (I think, the one with Jet Li in it) the to and fro between Glover and Gibson sounds like a real conversation, it just has that made up as we go along spontaneous feel to it. Flame me if you will. I have yet to see the first Mad Max movie, in fact I will get it tonight!

A good Chinese Horror flick is The Eye.
About a blind woman who gets retinal transplants and regains her sight. The woman who donated the retinas was a psychic who saw how people died.
Really good movie, except for one part where the two main characters, the woman and her doctor travel to Thailand to find out about the donor.
But the ending makes up for that section.

Tena, I loved Tampopo, although I haven't seen it since college. Like Big Night (also brilliant), it should not be watched without access to a lot of food, preferably similar to the food in the movie.
The original Ring was slow, but very creepy, especially towards the end. The sequel was incredible. The prequel, well, I haven't watched it yet, but I'm pretty sure it's good too. Ju-On: The Grudge is unbelievably intense, malevolent, and unrelenting.
If you want to branch out a little, I very highly recommend The Eye (HK, but by Thai brothers) - it's a little Sixth Sense-ish, but much much creepier. Some of the ghosts are just seriously scarybadwrong. Ditto for the sequel, although it's not as good overall.

WKD -- why flame? Lots of people loved the Lethal Weapon films. I myself don't, but then I don't like that kind of film.
And I'll give Gibson props as an actor, and even as a director. It's just that, overall, I'm not as much a fan of his stuff as a lot of people. And I don't want to be in whatever dark echo-y corridor of his head The Passion of the Christ was bouncing around in before it came out.
Must go for awhile. Catch you all later!

"Burma!"
"Why'd you say Burma?"
"I panicked."
Intercourse the penguin!
Anyway, Apartment Zero I saw in the late 80's. I remember it being quite creepy.
Keep an eye out for a late 80's Kiwi film The Quiet Earth. Just about the freakiest ending ever.

I loved Tampopo, though it made me want to lick whipped cream off... well, never mind.
The scene in the restaurant when the businessmen are ordering lunch is one of my favorite scenes of all time.
A Taxing Woman is another great film by Itami. You wouldn't think that a comedy about the Japanese tax police would have much appeal, but it does. I wasn't as impressed by the sequel, but I only saw it once.

Toshiro Mifune - I can't believe I forgot his name. He was so wonderful. I had a major crush on him. There is a wonderful early Kurosawa (IIRC) movie about a cop during the Occupation, who loses his gun and goes on a long trek to try to get it back. I can't remember the name of it. I think Mifune played the cop, but it's been so long since I saw it that I can't remember for sure.
I'm pitiful, really. I should be ashamed that I can't remember that stuff.

f - We've seen The Taxing Woman movies and we loved them - but I agree that the 2d wasn't quite as good as the first. The first was brilliant and hilarious.
The Japanese have the most amazing sensibility. The traditional sensibility is so refined, so graceful and among the loveliest in the world; the contemporary sensibility is just mad as a hatter and I love it. Murakami's books are like that - just mad, crazy and it works.

Stray Dog has a similar plotline to The Bicycle Thief and was made about the same time. II'm sure some film student has milked the similarities for a paper about the defeated nations of WW II. I suspect Paul Thomas Anderson borrowed from Stray Dog for the John C. Reilly sequences in Magnolia.

Kind of a what would ultimately happen if the world of 1984 and Farenheit 451 were combined, and continued to evolve for 50 years

I have always wondered how Lucas was able to accomplish that.
I guess the most elegant explanation would be that Duvall & Pleasance were having a gay affair with each other, and Lucas had pictures.
Or maybe it had something to do with Francis Ford Coppola being the executive producer, but that just kind of shifts the question without really answering it...

WKD--I recommend the movie sites AMG All Movie Guide and imdb.com for you; they'll tell you that High and Low is indeed the kidnap movie and they'll tell you the cinematographer and the make-up artist too. Japanese names that mean nothing to me, but dedicated connoisseurs will like all the info.

Waiting--8-ball is the only pool game I've played extensively, and sinking the 8 on break qualifies as an automatic win according to some rules (as scratching on break qualifies as an automatic loss). My Uncle John was especially adept at sinking the 8 on break when that was to his advantage--he tried to insist on it for the rules. People who knew him wouldn't give him that option.
Apparently you need a lot of english on the cue, hitting the third ball down on the triangle precisely at the center to have a decent chance of sinking the 8-er on break. You also need a tight rack, so Uncle J's opponents made a loose rack all the time.
What rules were you playing by?

yeah we gave him the game making score 5-3. i have been breaking on an angle trying to hit between first and second ball cos it seems i would scratch if i tried further down triangle but i did not know that was the trick. rack was probably tight cos i thought that was better too. i just read this to him and being the sweet guy that he is he says i should tell you it's the first time he's won in about three weeks!

Cronenberg kicks serious ass. And he's Canadian. What could be better?
I've probably mentioned this before, but Qin Song (The Emperor's Shadow), 1996, has stayed with me like few other movies. It was on IFC once about two years ago, & I've seen nothing of it since. For fun, odd horror I recommend Versus (except for the bizarro, seemingly tacked-on ending) and Little Otik.
Also, just finished watching MST3K - The Space Children ("Y'know, he has a real screen absence.") Might stop laughing eventually.
