Before I hired in at the borg I had an interview in White Plains. The trip involved a subway trip, a Metro North ride, and a cab ride (because the job was six miles from the train station and there was no local transportation). I have no idea why I even went on the interview. There was no way it was going to happen. But there were a lot of people in that office doing that very commute.

Another junk gardening tip, for Arizonians (and maybe others). I have a few hanging baskets that I am growing flowers on my porch in. Sometimes the combo of heat and wind dry them out so that you no longer want the plants. What I've started to do is to dump them in areas I 'might' want to start gardening in, water them. Sometimes they'll make a recovery after a few weeks or months. I've gotten some nice patches of what appears to be permanent flowers growing in those spots.

The three hour one-way mentioned in the first sentence doesn't sound right.
La Jolla to Coronado Island via the bay bridge is a minimum of 1 hour in light traffic.

Do you make preserves from the prickly pears?
I never have. I did try to make some cookies made from mesquite flour recently. They were not that good, though I guess you could eat this if you were hungry enough.

The 5 miles from my home to where I work (in downtown Austin) takes 25 minutes. Riding my bicycle takes the same amount otime, plus I get exercise. I try to do at least half my commutes by bicycle.

I lived in Houston in the early 80s, about 8 miles from where I worked near downtown. It took almost 2 hours to get there in the morning. We had to leave very shortly after 6 to arrive at 8 (I had to be there on time without fail, but it was never less than an hour and a half).

An ex-comrade bought a house in the Poconos.
The buses come right down to Wall St. so it's bad but not undoable.
Then he got a job in Jersey City. So he takes the bus to the WTC station and then the PATH.

The myth about Suburban areas to raise kids in is that they can be 'free range children'. This won't happen in most ticky-tack developments, nor in McMansion ones. Parents need to not helicopter so much for the children to be brought up to be able to organize their own activities.
My son has recently told me about his group of friends activities:
Breaking open an irrigation dam lock,
tormenting a bee keeper's bee hives,
going fishing,
'borrowing' a boat on a privately owned lake,
pick-up baseball games,
having a mid-night party deep in the forests.
Some good activities and some shockingly delinquent.
