My vote for a SS ad. They use FDR, we use Reagan (idea came from Kos - I'm just adding a recommendation for footage)
"For too long, too many people dependent on Social Security have been cruelly frightened by individuals seeking political gain through demagoguery and outright falsehood, and this must stop," Reagan said. "The future of Social Security is much too important to be used as a political football." Martin Wolk - MSNBC

It appears increasingly likely that Bush will lose the SS fight, and it is the very 'boy crying wolf' over the WMD issue that is standing in the way of his 'SS is in crisis' talk. I believe there is enough skepticism (there should be a damn sight more outright incredulity but you fight the president with the press you have, not the...etc.) to keep his smirky assertions from gaining any real traction this time.

U.N. Secretary General Kofi Annan will appoint the Bush administration's outgoing secretary of agriculture, Ann M. Veneman, as head of the U.N. Children's Fund next week, senior U.N. officials said.
Veneman was one of three candidates the administration proposed to succeed UNICEF Executive Director Carol Bellamy, who will step down in May after leading the agency for 10 years, the officials said. ...
Bellamy, 66, a Peace Corps director during the Clinton administration, had long been a target of social conservative critics who faulted her for promoting children's rights and reproductive health services for poor women.
Veneman, 55, is a political conservative who has served under Republican administrations dating back to President Ronald Reagan. Her views on many of the most politically sensitive issues confronting the United Nations' leading advocate for children, including access to sex education and reproductive health care services, remain unclear, according to U.N. officials.

As for the Williams=Kos nonsense, the wingers have decided to try to play a money=money argument. Our focus might be better directed to the Administration side of the equation. Appropriations bills all have a section prohibiting publicity or propaganda, and the WH already has a record with VNR boo-boos from HHS and Drugs are Bad m'kay office. Citing the violation of the law that has occured on the administration side cannot be met with anything about Kos and Jerome. In short, forget Williams and focus on Paige.

Warning - blatant quiltwhoring.
WTF - The past two hours I have not been able to get anything but a blank screen for Eschaton. Oh well.
Last weekend DWD and I decided to trade. He would send me a signed copy of his book Silent Screams of a Survivor and I would send him a quilt. DWD chose this quilt.
I started to read Silent Screams and it is quite good. No surprise there as we can all tell from his posts here that the man can write.

Well, I've been saying for years that GWB out-reactionaries Reagan--here's the proof.
Apropos of an earlier thread, could anyone lead me to the column in which David Brooks endorsed torture? I've Googled, and searched the NYT, but I haven't found it.
And in case anyone hasn't taken it yet, I just discovered on the 4/4/04 Eschaton (through the unofficial Paul Krugman archive) a link to a quiz that asks which New York Times Op-Ed columnist you are. I took the quiz and I'm Bob Herbert.

With less than a week to go until her husband's second inauguration, Laura Bush on Friday defended the decision to hold the $40 million celebration as planned despite a war abroad and the tsunami disaster in the Indian Ocean.
Inaugurations, Mrs. Bush said, are "an important part of our history."
"They're a ceremony of our history; they're a ritual of our government," she said in a round-table interview with reporters in the White House map room. "And I think it's really important to have the inauguration every time. I think it's also good for Washington's economy, for people to come in from around the country, for the hotels to be full, and the restaurants to be full, and the caterers to be busy. I think that's important."
She added: "I think there's a symbolic aspect of the inauguration that - and because of that, the symbol of the inauguration, you never want to - for any reason - cancel it or not have it."
As for the parties themselves, Mrs. Bush said she was "all ready."
"Not all the new clothes are in the house," she said, "but they've all had their last fitting."
Now where did I leave my guillotine? (Kidding, of course!)

Speaker tells California middle schoolers stripping can be lucrative
by the Associated Press
SAN FRANCISCO — The principal of a Palo Alto middle school may not invite a popular speaker back to an annual career day after he told girls they could earn a good living as strippers.
Management consultant William Fried told eighth-graders at Jane Lathrop Stanford Middle School on Tuesday that stripping and exotic dancing can pay $250,000 or more per year, depending on their bust size.
"It's sick, but it's true," Fried said in an interview later. "The truth of the matter is you can earn a tremendous amount of money as an exotic dancer, if that's your desire."
Fried has given a popular 55-minute presentation, "The Secret of a Happy Life," at the school's career day the past three years. He counsels students to experiment with a variety of interests until they discover something they love and excel in."
Ba'al pronounces himself pleased.

Yeah, the hard sell is on the way - the media shows some signs of a pulse, but it is hard not to believe that they will win. They are ruthless, evil liars and 51% of our countrymen are too stupid or evil to oppose them. AND - they have big, big money on their side.

Ha ha. The states that voted for Kerry heavily subsidize the states that voted for Bush, i.e. they pay more in federal taxes than they receive in federal benefits. The redder the state, the bigger the federal subsidy it gets. Just a fact.
Also kind of funny how it's those liberals who "hate freedom" who are the ones who defend civil liberties, while it's the conservatives who want to control our sex lives, force us to pray in school, and repeal the first and fourth amendments.
Just weird how these people believe the exact opposite of the truth.

No, we aren't a self-deluding crowd. It was a very close race, and our turnout was greatly improved, but so was theirs. A combination of 'convienient errors', outright fraud, voter supression, simple public herd mentality about "keeping us safe from terrorist" and the like, took it away once again. Nixon won big in '72, the Dems had their asses handed to them in that race, and we still got the SOB. Someone earlier quoted Marshall McLuhan about how it is only the small lies that need protecting because the big ones are protected by public incredulity. That's true up to a point, we often stammer in hair pulling amazement that the country hasn't yet seen through this joker and we forget that in reality there are a vast number of people who aren't paying very much attention. If they did, they very well might see through him, some will side with him because they don't like us, some will run away in disgust, some will join us. It's a shitty fact that dragging a country out of a war is a thousand times harder to get support for than cheering them into one.
Sigh, enough lecturing here, I'll be starting my blog up again on Monday, I'll try to save the pontificating for there and just come here to do puns and silly songs and beg for kitty pictures and the like.

"And I think it's really important to have the inauguration every time. I think it's also good for Washington's economy, for people to come in from around the country, for the hotels to be full, and the restaurants to be full, and the caterers to be busy. I think that's important."
And it's so important here on America's last plantation for all the lackeys to keep busy servicing me and my friends. What? They have no voting representation in Congress? Let them eat Texas barbeque!

Heartlanders hate anyone who worships differently, Freedom, the world, and Fair Markets. They are scared that their blue state counterparts worked harder and smarter than them, and seek to extort wealth from them by fiat. We coastals see through you elitist relativists, and we will fight on to preserve freedom, fairness, and the republic, in spite of you.

Without a doubt, the thing that I find most irritating about this blogger crapstory, is finding myself for the second day in a row, defending Kos to people who should goddamn well know better (no one here, of course).
And having said that, I don't know which annoys me more, the fact that I have to defend Kos over this, which I don't find questionable in its practice though he does other things I am not thrilled with but is his right to do so, or the fact that people who should know better about the motives of those behind this, don't.
The blogging world is going to have a problem if it continues to keep its head in the sand while the MSM, in its never ending quest to pee in the corners of every possible room, goes about its merry way, trying to lynch people like Kos and Jerome by the blog thread.

Blue state assholes, anyone?
Let me get this straight. Someone who tells the truth about a corrupt, illegal regime is a BAD role model and an embarassment?
God, has this country gone ass-backwards or what?
Sounds like this Hammond dickhead is a Bushtard. I would like to know what HE has ever accomplished!
============================
"Moore Gets No Love From Old High School
DAVISON, Mich. - Oscar on the shelf or not, Michael Moore is not getting much respect at his old high school. Despite his fame and many honors, the filmmaker has been rejected all four times that he has been nominated for Davison High School's Hall of Fame.
"Would you want him as a role model? Would you want your son or daughter to be like him?" asked Don Hammond, a member of the Hall of Fame selection committee. "I haven't talked to anybody yet who's for him. The word to describe Michael Moore is embarrassing. He embarrasses everybody."
Ryan Eashoo disagrees. The 1997 Davison High graduate has spent 80 hours the last two weeks and $600 of his own money trying to get Moore elected.
"We've been blacklisted," Eashoo, 25, told the Detroit Free Press. "I'm a huge Michael Moore fan. He's a great producer, great filmmaker, always sticking up for minorities. He's kind of an underdog."
So far, Eashoo has 300 signed nominations of Moore. His goal is 2,000 by Feb. 1. The committee meets Feb. 11 to choose its inductees.
Moore's film "Fahrenheit 9/11" attacked President Bush's rationale for the war in Iraq and accused him and his administration of fostering fear for political gain. Moore spent the weeks before the election traveling across the country to urge Americans to vote Bush out of office.
His "Bowling for Columbine" won the Oscar for best documentary in 2003.

And lib up at the top of the thread has a GREAT idea about Reagan. I say Harry Reid should listen up and do it, baby.
But I ws surprised by responses on some other threads around the net on this topic.
It wasn't that everyone didn't know about this, as Slate's article would assert. That's just bullshit.
It's that no one had yet LIED in public about it, hence, there were no bloggers out there to be surprised (!) at a story which was told from the complete bullshit POV.

I like the conclusion to the NY Books piece:
After all the recriminations and all the analyses of how the party must change, the fact remains that the Democrats came very close to bringing off an almost unprecedented achievement: turning out an incumbent president in a time of war. They failed, but not entirely; they now confront a narrowly reelected president, encumbered with a grim and intractable war, constrained by a huge deficit of his own creation, and faced with increasingly extreme demands that will be satisfied only at great political cost.

On a lighter note, Susan Candiotti (sp?) of CNN is telling us what a light hearted, friendly guy that sick fuck Granger (creul torturer of Iraqis and inpregnator of L. England) is. Would someone please do an act of kindness and shoot me?
bigvic - 10:15 am
From 1995-2000, while Bush served as Texas governor, that state led the country in state-sponsored executions. In 1996, guards at the Brazoria County jail staged a "drug raid" on inmates that was videotaped for training purposes. The tape showed several inmates forced to strip and lie on the ground; a police dog attacking prisoners, biting one on the leg; guards prodding prisoners with stun guns and forcing them to crawl on the ground; and guards dragging injured inmates face-down back to their cells.
"The levels of abuse, the humiliation and degradation, the lack of oversight and accountability ... there were many parallels with Iraq," said Michelle Deitch, who teaches criminal justice at the Lyndon Baines Johnson School of Public Affairs at the University of Texas.
Despite the military's claim that the torture at Abu Ghraib was the result of "poorly prepared and untrained" military police officers, it seems more likely that the training Graner and Frederick received in U.S. prisons contributed to the problem.

stripping and exotic dancing can pay $250,000 or more per year, depending on their bust size.
Great - let's teach all young girls that their success in life depends on the bust size. Don't they get enough of this message from the media. Do we really want to re-enforce it in the schools.

lb0313, it's a good topic, I agree, it might well seem that we get lost in an echo chamber, and there is no doubt that a very good argument for that can be made. I guess I would just note that we are more frustrated that our message doesn't seem to get out through the SCLM and into the ears of the general public whereas the 'Freedom's on the March (KABOOM) crowd gets all the press. We thought we were going to win the election, we know damn well we're losing the war.
So the wingers wound CBS and we can't make a dent in that steaming pile of crap FOX. They play by different rules it seems and I'll admit it I'm stumped sometimes. I am reminded of Bill (Bells and Whistles) Bennett shaking his head sadly on Larry King that the public was wrong to have a positive opinion about Bill Clinton. I guess I know how he felt sort of.

Sorry, I don't like football and being around Pittsburgh makes me a bit tetchy.
It does raise questions when a scribe doesn't seem to be aware of the essential characteristics of their nym, as (Unless I'm confusing you with a diffrent Harrison Bergeron.)

Great - let's teach all young girls that their success in life depends on the bust size. Don't they get enough of this message from the media. Do we really want to re-enforce it in the schools.
Ten students between the ages of 11 and 12 were strip-searched as officials at their charter school tried to find a missing $10 bill.
Seven girls and three boys at the Mainland Preparatory Academy were searched down to their underwear Thursday after one of the girls reported the money missing, said Principal Wilma Green. The money was not found.
"It's not illegal," La Marque Police Chief Richard Price said. "We don't see it as a criminal offense." But he said an investigation was underway.
The search angered at least one parent, who filed a complaint with police and pulled her four children out of the school.
"I have never signed a consent to let my kids be strip-searched -- never," said Shelli Owens, the mother of a 12-year-old boy who was searched.
Green said the school has conducted such searches in the past without calling parents.
"Never had a complaint," she said. "I can't say if it happened again I wouldn't do the same thing."

Canada Immigration Minister Quits in Pizza Scandal
Fri Jan 14, 2005 10:25 AM ET
OTTAWA (Reuters) - Canadian Immigration Minister Judy Sgro, already embroiled in a scandal over a Romanian stripper, resigned on Friday after a pizza shop owner said she reneged on a promise to give him asylum in Canada.
Sgro became the first government minister to quit since Liberal Prime Minister Paul Martin took power a year ago.
"She met with the prime minister this morning and handed over her resignation," an official told Reuters.
Sgro quit after learning that the pizza shop owner had filed an affidavit which accused Sgro of offering him help to stay in Canada in return for pizza deliveries and assistance with her election campaign.
Parts of the sworn statement -- filed in Canada's federal court -- were quoted in the Toronto Star. The newspaper said Sgro would step down so she could clear her name and CBC television said she would fight the allegations.
Sgro, who took up her job in December 2003, was already under investigation for her decision to grant a temporary residency permit to a female Romanian stripper.
Sgro also extended the expired work permit of the stripper, who had worked on her election campaign. Sgro denied doing anything wrong, saying she acted on humanitarian grounds.
CBC television said Sgro's responsibilities would be assumed by Joe Volpe, currently the human resources minister. The official declined to confirm that.

Please see them if you want to know what I am talking about -- I want to keep this post short. Are these actually from an insider -- I have no reason to doubt it. They paint a scary picture of the chimperor.
Like some other sources, claim the death counts from Iraq are wrong and that the media ban on photographing coffins is all about preventing anyone from doing a recount (sound familiar to anyone). He talks about terrible atrocities there because if we violage the Geneva Convention - those that hate us ain't going to.
He closes with a suggestion for action (I always like that):
This really awful business is a top priority secret but I will make the shits happy by letting it out and if I can get the actual figures, I will give them to you, names and all, to post alongside the official lies. Why don’t you ask survivors to send you the names of their lost sons and husbands and then check them against the Pentagon Lie List? Better, publish the entire roster of Official Dead and ask anyone whose relatives, sons or husbands are not on it to contact you. You are in the position of doing all of us a great favor if you do.”
Assuming reports like this are true -- doesn't this type of thing give us our best opportunity to go after smirky? Are we really just looking at the Pentagon Papers all overagain? Wouldn't this derail the "mandate" thing and whole undermine his credibility on every other issue? (i.e. Social Security "Bancrupcy") Has anyone seen such a list or have any infor? Thanks!

He CAN lose it...and then what will be the reaction of the talking head pundits who were predicting it as a MUST WIN!!!
Historically, isn't it true that so-called "lame duck" presidents do not accomplish great things in their 2nd term. Do you think that might be true even for the ones that didn't win election for the first time? (I won't say anything out the second -- not a popular topic here).
Don't you think that chimpy's handlers will accept that he carried their agenda for him -- bancrupting the federal government and throwing billions to the military industrial complex while cutting taxes. If chimpy is just a monkey on a string, wouldn't the real political forces behind him be turning their attention towards the next cycle.
Do you think that at some point, those behind him which I will refer to as the "power elite" might just enjoy laughing at his ineptitude and the havok they have reaked on the system? After all, IMHO, expecting good govenment from the neocons that proclaim they oppose it (while racking up gov't debt) is insanity.

Poll Allows Americans to Choose the Perfect Nipple, Highlighting
Variations and Cosmetic Correction
While Votes Are Cast for the Perfect Size and Projection, Help is Available for Those Who Need Nipple Correction
/24-7PressRelease.com/ - Marina del Rey, CA January 9, 2005 -- A new online poll at www.NippleRepair.com shows visitors a gallery of areolas and nipples and asks them to weigh in on the perfect size and projection of this most sensitive area. Viewers can participate in the informal poll or can go straight to the results page to see where America stands on the issue of the perfect nipple. While the poll gathers popular vote, it also allows women a chance to see how their own nipples compare to others, which can be especially helpful for those who are self-conscious or worried about their own nipple size and shape.
How does this impact future earning streams?

As to my brother...haven't gotten around to that yet. Don't really want to deal with it...

rorschach,
Wow, you had quite a night last night! I guess you could take it as some sort of perverse compliment. I guess.
Thankfully for me, I'm not worth name stealing, nor is my blog worth trolling. It affords me a peaceful anonymity.

The real rulers who own our so called media won't be happy until they crush bloggers.
Fuck them.
Elaine Supkis
Can I tell you something disturbing, though? Telling people you are a blogger gives you a weird instant street cred, especially in the nooks and crannies of the world. *I* have a certain credibility among the sub-sub-sub-category I blog about, and that's just bizarre.
Makes me wish I was doing something important, like Atrios.

Liberals hate God, Freedom, America and Free Markets.
Hey we already killed Christ (and I'm assuming the Jews who killed Christ were "liberals") so why exactly does God feel safe?

Well, hell - we god fearin' MURKANS have to do SOMETHING to counteract all this commie talk that these girls have gotten from them thar fem'nists all them years.
Cuz we all know that women should be either behind a man or under him, right?

Why don't they tell these girls how much money a call girl can make?

It appears increasingly likely that Bush will lose the SS fight,
catalexis | Email | Homepage | 01.15.05 - 9:53 am | #
No.
This won't even be a close fight.
We've already lost.
The pussy democrats will cave on this just like they have everything else. They will have no plan, show no courage, will talk about bullsh*t rather than facts when on the talk shows, they will completely pussy out on this.
And if certain republicans manage to oppose Bush on this then Delay and Frist will unleash a terror campaign of threats and bribes on each and every member until they too cave.
This isn't even going to be a fight.
Nor do I have even the slightest faith in the democratic party to use this against the republicans come the 06' elections.
The democrats are just too wussy-like to show any courage or competence on the subject. Not to mention the number of democrats who will sell their opposition to Delay and Frist on either future legislation or some other subject. We'll lose from within before we lose from without. We've seen this before. It's been like clockwork the last 4 years.

The lesson of "Memogate," then, is that journalists may be punished for bad reporting-- if they have offended the wrong people. If they have merely helped steer the country into war under false pretenses, their careers can continue unimpeded.
Well, duh! Of course someone who attacks the president during time of war should be investigated, it saps our resolve and morale. There were no false pretense for war, we did the right thing.
Support our troops, morons. They are fighting for your freedom to whine and complain and hate them. How long before you are on your own, in a sea of Heartlanders, with nobody to protect you from the marketplace of ideas and the patriotism of true Americans? We will make short work of you all.

bush on his weekly radio segment is still in crisis mode about Social Security and all it would take to derail him is for one high profile Dem. Senator to call him "Chicken Little".The media would pounce upon it and debate it.All the facts would spill across the airways.
No doubt bush would strike back,so another Dem would have to call him "The boy who cried wolf",or Pinocchioand link it all to those missing WMD and the phony threat Iraq posed to the nation. Is that asking too much?

WASHINGTON - Social Security taxes will have to rise by half if lawmakers don't revamp the giant program, President Bush's budget chief said Friday as the administration sought support for its overhaul plans.
etc.
------------------------
Their trial balloons are so pathetic. Next week we will get "The president does not need the consent of Congress or the UN to save Social Security."

I'll believe that when I actually see some elected and up-for-election Dems in swing states go on the record as being pro-gay.[=crickets chirping=]
Remember, when cornered, most Dems in close races this past cycle either:
* supported marriage amendments
* punted with support for civil unions (that don't deal with federal issues, like Social Security benefits or taxes), or
* said the issue wasn't something to deal with by amendment unless there was "judicial activism" in their state threatening marriage as we know it.
