GravatarPractically every writer for Slate is a tremendous tool.

I used to enjoy reading Slate years ago. I'm not sure if it was better then or if I was just stupider or something.

I like to think it was just better (of course). If so, I don't know what the hell happened to it. Now it is a steaming pile of canine feces. When they hired Christopher Hitchens, it became clear that there was no hope for them.

Gravatarseriously now, this appears to me to be accomplishing two things for theM:

1) Discredit Dean's candidacy for the DNC by sliming him with some claim that he paid for positive coverage

2) stir up the wurlitzer to direct attention away from the Williams NCLB story

OK, maybe one more:

3) Spread distrust about bloggers intentions (like most of us who actually read blogs give a shit what the WSJ has to say)

They really ARE afraid of Dean, aren't they?

GravatarThis is absurd. Some guy on the internet gets paid to work for a campaign and he tells everyone about it. That's supposed to make it okay that the Bush Administration secretly used taxpayer money to pay a prominent radio and TV journalist to push policy?

Comparing the Williams fiasco with the Dean blogger isn't just "misleading," it's downright immoral.

GravatarI was wrong about the rethuglicans... they ARE evolving. Adaptations like using blogs to bring the final solution about is advanced thinking. Evil, hateful, but advanced. Tom Daschle was targeted that much more specifically only because of his speakership. The less prominent are next. It took Rome 300 years to fall, we may be in this mode for a lifetime. Watch the dominoes fall.

GravatarI think traditional "journalists" make the mistake of thinking that the people who read blogs are more credulous than those who read newspapers for some reason. Suellentrop says:

Which, if any, of them paid Moulitsas for the honor of directing his grassroots minions to part with their wallets? If you gave one of Moulitsas' preferred candidates money, wouldn't you like to know if Moulitsas' endorsement was purchased?

So now Kos has "minions" that he can order to give money to people?

If I gave money to one of his candidates, I should have had the common sense to do a little research on that candidate, and not just take someone's word for it. Anyone who donates just based on one person's endorsement isn't in much of a position to complain.

GravatarIts simple really.

Kos was paid for HIS information and expertise.

Williams was paid to say what Bush wanted him to say.

What's so hard about that?

Start repeating it so it sinks in.

GravatarThe point of all this is to make us forget about Armstrong Williams. Don't let that happen! This is another Rovian maneuver to make us look elsewhere than at the real problem: that the government is paying journalists to transmit hidden propaganda, and the money comes from taxes. Who is responsible within the Bush administration? That's the next question they are trying to steer us away from.

GravatarI posted this at Steve Gilliard's (commenter Jeany at Digby's came up with a beautiful word today, describing Little Ricky Vandal, but I'm stealing it: "spamabout") and then I emailed it to Suellentrop, which activity I hope qualifies me to use the phrase "I'm on spamabout":

OK, here's the story as it now stands:

Zephyr was in contact with two WSJ hacks, with a third WSJ hack on background. WSJ hack #3 got on the phone with Laura Gross, of DFA, and asked her about the story and concluded from their on-background conversation, that there was, in fact, no story.

Meanwhile, WSJ hacks #1 and #2 took the crap Zephyr spewed out for them AND took the on-background stuff from Laura Gross and KNOWINGLY LIED--they made up a story to smear Dean, Kos and Jerome, and to serve as a smokescreen for the Williams payola.

WSJ hacks #1 and #2 KNEW they had no story. WSJ hack #3 had already found that out, from her conversation with Laura Gross.

The WSJ hacks knowingly, on purpose, LIED. They made it up. They lied.

The WSJ was in full possession of all the facts, and made a conscious decision to smear Dean, Kos, and Jerome.

They. Lied.

GravatarThis whole thing makes me want to throw my hands up and leave the whole country to the wingnuts. Isn't it just too much work? A lie travels around the world before the truth gets its boots on - as long as it's a lie told by a Republican - or at least a newly minted DINO.

(Or maybe it's just Democrats whose names start with "Z.")

Just another example of the fact that the media will never be liberal: Even in the blogosphere, only the rightwing blogs can get traction.

GravatarThe only way this stuff will stop is if there are consequences. I think Zephyr Teachout should have her fellowship taken away. Of course, if she was a, y'know, ethical person, she'd give it up voluntarily and enroll in a class in remedial ethics -- like a kindergarten somewhere.

I'm writing the folks at the Berkman Center that it's laughable to hold a conference on blogging/journalism/ethics/credibility with Zephyr as a fellow. I left a viscous comment at her blog, too, rare for me but warranted.

Here's a link if anyone wants to share a thought with the BC folks, too.

GravatarSee, that's the thing: the VRWC has this machinery in place so that when Williams gets busted for payola, the story--the history--becomes about how Dean paid bloggers to shill for him, thus discrediting Dean (and his run for DNC Chair), the left-wing blogosphere, and the Williams payola story. All at once. It's economical. It's efficient.

What will we do about it? We see the same thing happen over and over. What do we do about it?

GravatarDean looks bad no matter how you slice it.

In what parallel universe? The one in which all candidates look bad for hiring consultants and producing ads? That's all this is; "Look, Bushco got caught STEALING taxpayer money and giving it to a so-called "journalist" to shill its policies in column inches owned by other people (media companies) and on airwaves owned by other people (the public) and never revealed he was a paid propagandist - but this Dean guy...HE took private funds and paid a couple of guys who owned PRIVATE websites to do consulting, and they disclosed it. See? Democrats are even WORSE than Republicans!"

Look, I know it's discouraging that some people are stupid enough not to know bullshit when they see it, but there's no way ANY of this "looks bad" for Dean, any more than it "looks bad" for a candidate to pay someone to do an ad voice-over saying nice things about the candidate. It's a non-issue, other than for the fact that the WSJ knowingly slandered Kos and Jerome Armstrong, for which they should be sued. It's the only way the real facts will ever get any play in the SCLM.

Great, social analysis from somebody named "Boomer".

Hate to generalize, but I can count on one hand the number of times I've heard an athlete say something intelligent.

I'm from a blue state, and I thought Moss's "gesture" was very ill-advised.

Granted, that's mostly because I cannot for the life of me understand why wide receivers feel the need to become mimes whenever they score a touchdown.

I disagree. This smear job was done to discredit the left blogs, and Dean. Bushco and the right-wingnuts know that interest in lefty blogs is on the rise.

This was a chance to take them done a peg. Put them in their place,as it were.

To compare this to Armstrong Williams is ridiculous.

If you try to email him, you get the standard email page which then goes blank on its own.

GravatarI worry about the Dean thing, because I worry that there are a lot of party members/officials who are so skittish and afraid of giving the other side "ammunition" who might be scared off of voting for Dean for DNC chair.

In other words, this "scandal" itself doesn't worry me so much as the Dems' fears about what the Right will say about it do.

Gravatar"I worry because it makes Dean look bad"

Look bad to whom? To those who will pick the new DNC chair?

They're not neophytes. As opinion-leaders, they've all been hired by campaigns in the past. They'll see this for what it is.

GravatarI agree with Jennifer - that's just stupid. The last person who "looks bad" over this is Dean. The people who look bad are Zephyr (and she better hope she never runs into me if I have clippers on me - I'd be happy to revive that lovely old tradition of shaving the heads of collaborators -), and the WSJ.

I do not for the life of me see how Dean could look bad for not doing anything wrong, for pete's sake. The only reason Dean might look bad is because they are trying to make him look bad.

Goddamn it.

I'm paraphrasing from memory, but after the initial pre-interview chitchat she says something to Bush like, "Okay, if you're ready, let's begin the torture." And everyone has a hearty chuckle.

Didn't anyone at ABC cringe when they watched that footage?

GravatarIs Boomer Eisiason an asshole or what? He just said that you probably think Randy Moss's fake moon shot was ok if you're from a blue state.

I thought the Randy Moss thing would easily win most outrageous overblown and ridiculous story of the week. But nooooooooooooo. The week finished strong.

1. This incredibly fucking LIE from the Right-Wing facilitated by Zethyr Teachout, the QUISLING of the blogosphere.

2. President Fuckup saying he had absolutely no regrets.

What a fucking joke of a week.

GravatarRealize that , I'm sure, a large percentage of the offended comment worriers, no matter how they self-describe their politics are, like so many C-SPAN callers, plants meant to disrupt the conversation and skew it into odd new dimensions. And, as many know, the whore press fan these flames to score Nantucket beach houses and gratis dinners.
I don't think l'affair Cummings is a setback...I mean are their huge numbers of Rethug-types reading print articles? They are hearing snippets and misdirected book-review-treatment snippets of some of what was discussed in print...they fact that these "brain cheetos" don't stick to gray matter explains why the Bob "Spank Me I'm a Dirty Boy" Walker-types have to keep hammering the ever-changing fantasy mantras.
That these "stories" progress as far as they do on the intellectual side is more damning evidence against the lazy inept hacks filling the top established ranks of the Democratic Party. I mean everybody wants a Nantucket beach house, right?
Attack, attack, attack and force messy public legal squabbles when appropriate...airtime, airtime, airtime...Democratic leaders, including some who have been keeping their powder dry, who want to retain power will get with the paradigm shift.

GravatarMeanwhile, a complaint by the Kerry campaign about the conduct of two Dean campaign volunteers led Dean officials to terminate the volunteers' involvement in the former governor's organization.
In a letter late Thursday to the Kerry campaign, Iowans for Dean State Director Jeani Murray said the two staffers "however earnest, misrepresented themselves and the campaign" and "can no longer work for our campaign in any capacity."
She added, "Our field organizers' guide clearly states that people who work for Howard Dean shall abide by ethical standards and a code of conduct that subscribes to high standards."
Murray declined to provide additional details.

Today's story.

WASHINGTON - The chairman of the Federal Communications Commission (news - web sites) ordered an investigation Friday into whether conservative commentator Armstrong Williams broke the law by failing to disclose he was paid by the Bush administration to plug the president's education agenda.

This is still news, and we have to make sure it stays that way.

Also Friday, two Democratic senators asked the Government Accountability Office, Congress' investigative arm, to review whether any other federal agencies have paid commentators to support the administration's agenda.

Sens. Byron Dorgan, D-N.D., and Ron Wyden, D-Ore., asked the Government Accountability Office to investigate whether the Education Department's payment to Williams violated a ban on propaganda — and, if so, to determine who should be held accountable.

GravatarDuring the presidental campaign, establishment Dems didn't want Dean, and while I know he goofed up at times, they still worked very hard to capitalize on his mistakes and undermine his candidacy. Remember "Dean is unelectable"? The establishment Dems started this meme and then made sure the prophecy was fulfilled.

I think we are seeing a similar campaign by Clinton, Kerry and other establishment DNCers to bury Dean. Teachout and Trippi are just willing foot soldiers in the war against him, and I'm afraid that, once again, the establishment will win. Once they get the guy they want, we will all be told to fall in line and give our full support and cooperation to the winner.

And, of course, we probably will. What are our alternatives? We are the useful idiots of the party.

While I didn't watch I've heard the Pretzeldent with Barney was hysterical...Wawa, after watching the dog ignore Jr. and cringe when he came close, apparantly said, "He (the dog) doesn't seem to know you, Mr. President...
Then, when Paxil, I mean, Laura was showing off her hideous purple and orange redo of the Lincoln bedroom, Wawa said, "Don't you think it's a little garish?" Our Paxil, always a quick one replied, "Well, maybe a little."
Several gracious ladies I know said the moment was almost painful but quite funny.

Gravatarpie, Jennifer, Tena--all of you, I hope you're right. I'm worried and angry because I remember the whole "scream" lie.

I think this might very well keep Dean from getting the DNC Chair. I think that might be part of the point of this whole crapfest.

The good news is, they fear him. The bad news is, he seems to be surrounded by spies and moles and incompetents.

I will be happy if you all are right.

But you should remember that just because you're smart and reasonable and kind and honest doesn't mean other people are.

It's like a Tower of Babel situation, in a way. Completely different languages.

There must be a way to fight back that hasn't been rendered useless and foolish by the rabid right.

I don't think any of my friends doubt that I will do this.

My local Ralph's grocery has his book (in paperback) in the book section. I always read a few lines, just so I can say,"Yeah, I've read some of his book."

I always call Colin Powell a piece of human garbage. If I had something stronger to apply to Hannity, I would use it.

What an ass-hat!

So if you hear on the "news" that some master's student slugged Hannity, you can say, "That guy must be Hoosier X!"

The Kleenex Corporation today released a statement warning of an impending shortages in all of its soft paper products, especially facial tissue and toliet paper.

GravatarThere must be a way to fight back that hasn't been rendered useless and foolish by the rabid right.

Hello, Sarah

We all have to keep trying, and doing what we can with our resources and our skills.

I'm almost out of time here at the library, but I am working on an essay that will be on my blog, mushtown.blogspot.com, about my own methods of having personal discussions with these ass-hats.

GravatarSusan,

you are right, if it turns out that this is dirty tricks from the Dems, to smear Dean, then they are finished. That will be it, end of story. Dig the grave and bury them.

GravatarSusan - that's fine - you are free to do what you will. But intimating that the rest of us "will probably fall in line" and that we are "useful idiots," is hardly fair.

And if this entire situation begins to devolve into another protracted argument on the left over Dean vs. Kerry - we might as well put the barrel of the gun to our collective temple and pull the trigger.

GravatarHoosier X - too true about Esiason. Watching him, there wasn't a doubt in my mind that he's angling to be the next block-headed ex-jock/sports analyst to run for office as a repig (see: J.D. Hayworth, J.C. Watts, Tom Osborne, Steve Largent).

What I got a kick out off was that they did a cute little animated "Thursty Awards" show (kind of a "hall of shame"). Moss took home the big prize and the character then mooned the podium. The MC exclaimed "Holy Warren Moon! Well, if Joe Buck thinks that's the most disgusting thing he's ever seen, he hasn't watched FOX lately."

They cut back to the panel and Boomer looked like he'd just been force-fed a handful of thumbtacks. It was bee-uty-full.

GravatarOT I got the following tidbit from someone at the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid services regarding the Drug Benefit Card.

One of the statistics the agency is tracking is the number of people with the card over time. The expectation was that the number would increase as more people opted for the card. In reality, the number decreased. The reason of course is that more people who already have the card are dying then are signing up. In order to make the numbers look better, the decision was made to not remove the dead people from counts.

I'm soooo glad that I'm spreadin' the Lizardoid Word all over the internets and letting everyone know how smart your average lizard is. I'm nearly famous!!!!

Gravatar"On Dean’s campaign, we paid Markos and Jerome Armstrong as consultants, largely in order to ensure that they said positive things about Dean. We paid them over twice as much as we paid two staffers of similar backgrounds, and they had several other clients. While they ended up also providing useful advice, the initial reason for our outreach was explicitly to buy their airtime. To be very clear, they never committed to supporting Dean for the payment -- but it was very clearly, internally, our goal."

versus

"For the record, I will not discuss my role within the Dean campaign, other than to say it's technical, not message or strategy. I will also not discuss any of my other clients, including their identities ..."

Someone is lying. Apart from "atrios", I mean.

GravatarHardly surprising that a blog operator who had built one of the largest operations on the net would be paid more than someone else with otherwise "similar background" by a campaign that was seeking to revolutionize politics by netroots activism and fundraising.

The Dean people probably would have been better off hiring asshat, given his gargantuan success as a hit and run poster with zero credibility.

Contrast this with that paragon of Republican virtue George Will:

George Will was among a number of prominent individuals to receive $25,000 per day of conversation on a board of advisers for Hollinger International, a newspaper firm controlled by magnate Conrad Black. Although Will has often scorned the convenient forgetfulness of others, the Times reported that "Mr. Will could not recall how many meetings he attended." But an aide confirmed the annual $25,000 fee.

Several paragraphs of the column featured quotations from a speech by Black. The laudatory treatment began high in the column as Will referred to some criticisms of Bush policies and then wrote: "Into this welter of foolishness has waded Conrad Black."

But Will claimed in a December interview that nothing was amiss. "Asked in the interview if he should have told his readers of the payments he had received from Hollinger," a New York Times article reported on Dec. 22, "Mr. Will said he saw no reason to do so."

The Times quoted Will as saying: "My business is my business. Got it?"

GravatarWell, to give "hat and run" his due, he didn't use the dreaded "Duncan" in his post (almost as scary as "moonbat").

It sure helps to come here and reaffirm that not all americans are self-interested bastards. Plus, you occasionally run across something like this article. For some reason, when I read "one also felt compelled to go out to the lake and scream and dance naked and break something from the past that needed to be broken" Hecate came to mind.

BTW, I found it when looking for the lyrics to "underwear goes inside the pants." Must be heard to be appreciated.

GravatarFielding - "underwear goes inside the pants" calls to mind my nephew's fetish for what he called "big boy pants" when toilet training.

When his room was about to be redecorated, I asked him what he would like me to paint on his walls - giving him several choices of illustrations from children's books - Curious George, the Wild Things, Dr. Suess, etc.

His request? "Big boy pants."

Needless to say, we ditched the idea of creating a mural on the wall for him. Somehow I don't think paintings of underwear would have survived the test of time. (though I'm still disappointed I didn't get to do a Wild Things bedroom for him, it would have been so cool!)

They recently upped the limits to $250,000 when it looked like they weren't going to make their target. Still may not, but stiffing the district will let them buy a few extra swizzle sticks.

GravatarOffice of the Commissioner of Baseball

That bastard bud selig -- he raped the Milwaukee Brewers by borrowing out the team equity and then telling the state of Wisconsin to build him a ballpark or else. Tommy Thompson played a key roll in construction of Miller Park. Then, he practically ran the franchise in the ground, finally cutting its payroll to about the lowest in MLB (while all along the fans were promised that the "new revenue" streams would "guarantee" a competitive team).

He put his daugher in charge of the team -- she had no real, meaningful baseball experience (please understand -- this is not a sexist remark, I am sure there were more qualified women!) The team was the laughing stock of baseball and attendance at the park fell in HUGE numbers after the 1st year in the new park.

Wendy was so unpopular and demonstrated no compentence at running the team (her husband was also given an important position) The seligs brought in a local, popular, african american to be in charge of the operation -- telling him they were committed to a quality team with their "new" revenue streams. Then they cut the payroll and fired him when he questioned the move. At least they sold the team now -- but it will take years to bring many fans back.

Now MLB is a major coronation supporter. Sounds like a typical republican "values" to me.

GravatarOver at Smirking Chimp, there's a long article called "The Madness of GWB" by Paul Levy, identified as a Jungian psychologist and Tibetan Buddhist. He's assigned himself the task of naming the illness affecting W and about half the nation. The name is "malignant egophrenia," which he takes some pains to explain in medium-thick Jungian jargon. A recurring theme of the article is that ME is widespread, with W just an important focal point. The article includes a section comparing epidemics of ME under W to Hitler, which he does with a straight face and no apology. Here's a sample:

"At the root of Bush’s process is an unwillingness and seeming inability to experience his own sense of sin, guilt and shame, as if he is afraid of being exposed, of being found out. He’s clearly unable to feel any remorse and experience his own weakness and vulnerability, his own sense of failure. This threatens his narcissism too much. One aspect of Bush’s pathology is ‘malignant narcissism,’ as he reacts sadistically to others who mirror back his guilt and don’t support and enable his narcissism."

GravatarFielding -As for abortion, I've seen enough from the inside to know that while the grass roots folk are impassioned, the real emotion is not for the fetus - it's against the feminist movement, which is really women taking power back after 5,000 miserable, subjugated years of patriarchal domination.

Thanks for that link - that was great. I loved the paragraph about abortion - that was perfect.

GravatarI thought it appropriate to post the chimperor's supporters list because reasonable people can question if their dollars are the only "vote" that counts. Of course, both coke and pepsi are on that list -- is that 95% of the national soft-drink market or what. What ever happened to free markets? This is crony capitalism, IMHO, indistinguishable from socialism.

I was listening to a local radio talkshow yesterday (in Pittsburgh we actually have a liberal talkshow!) and the subject was the coronation. Some mook calls in, regular Joe Workingclass, who said he sent $500 to the coronation fund. Because it's what America is all about. Then he claimed to be a Kerry voter.

What frightens me is he might've been telling the truth.

You can enjoy soda pop without drinking Coke or Pepsi.

GravatarNot following the discussion, so apologies for breaking the flow:

But here's the practical side of this (and if this hasn't been mentioned by now, I'll be astonished):

It's all about Dean and the Democrats. Nothing else (although it might pretend to be).

All the "correcting" and "critiquing" and "fact-checking" and even blogging in the world won't divert this attempt to, once again, direct the Democrats to do as the RNC wishes.

Would Dean do that much for the Dems? Who cares? So long as the GOP can still pull the DNC's strings, what does it matter?

It is, after all, all about power.

GravatarFielding, thanks from me, as well. My granddaughter just turned 10 on the 13th. We were going to celebrate her bday today, but, alas, Portland has freezing rain. Has not gotten above 29 today in my front yard.

I've been speaking w/my dtr-in-law, a wonderful person I adore, about speaking w/my g-daughter re: what's going to happen to her in the next too-few yrs. Hair on her body in odd places, bleeding, breasts, so many questions. My DIL said, go for it, please. Sometimes, grannies can do what parents can't.

However, Fielding, the links you sent encouraged me. Hillary, for whatever any of us may think of her, got that title right. It does "take a village" to raise kids. So, I'll try to do my part as very best I can.

And, Tena - thanks, yes, I do write, and will continue to. Hell, might as well - and, actually, we had better. No other way we will be counted. And I intend to be counted!!

GravatarYes it is, but we're long overdue for an anti-cola movement in this country.

I have seen article in britain's online newpapers about a crisis in diabetes over there. It is my understanding that the numbers are at least as bad over here -- nary a work in the SCLM.

Perhaps I am wrong on this one, but I understand that the biggest problem might be corn sweetners (syrup) - created via the "miracles" of chemistry.

Yes, sugary water is probably not good for you -- but corn sweetner is probably worse. As I recall, it has something to do with it breaking down directly in the liver -- but I would have to google this as its been a while. All I know is I avoid it altother.

Ginger beer! Let's hear it for ginger beer!

I can summon the most amazing belches drinking that.

Did I just say that out loud?

GravatarRobert - You're right and this is likely going to end up being a huge test for the Democrats. If the DNC is stupid enough to go against what the activists in the party are telling them they want them to do, then they are asking to be sidelined completely as irrelevant.

I'd follow Dean into a new party in a minute.

And I wasn't a Dean person in the primaries, frankly. I didn't belong to anyone until Kerry stepped up and I freely admit that I fell for Kerry. I still think well of him, though I question some of what he's done since the 2d.

Would Dean do that much for the Dems? Who cares? So long as the GOP can still pull the DNC's strings, what does it matter?

It is, after all, all about power.

Thanks, humbly -- I know the textbook definitions and the relationship to the means of production. I was trying to refer to it from a functional point of view. Either way, the means of production are addicted to the "public teat."

Last night, john had a good way to "frame" this. To paraphrase what I think he said (and I am sorry, john, if I get this wrong): Under socialism, everyone gets reasonably good health care. Under crony capitalism, only the lucky and well-connected.

Gravatarspork - one of the radio bloviators here was spouting off about a few articles somewhere where the authors were criticizing the expenditure on the inauguration especially with the tsunami, and how it was all private money and rather late to cancel the big celebrations when the tsunami hit, and wasn't this just outrageous. Then the parade of outraged callers, who also tossed in about how Democrats don't work, all liberals are liars, yadda yadda. Finally, the host says something about how he hasn't gotten any liberal callers to come in on the side of these folks who wrote the offending articles, so of course I had to call, so I could be the token liberal.

So I said I'm a liberal and of course private individuals should have a right to spend their money however they want, and it is of course foolish to expect everything to be cancelled because the tsunami happened, most of the money is already spent, etc. But that I couldn't figure out why the Bush administration itself couldn't have seen the PR value if they had asked all these donors to instead donate money so our troops could have armor, so they would at least look really compassionate and like they had their priorities straight, but that of course it was their right to hold big victory celebrations rather than helping out the troops since it is, after all, being underwritten by private funds. Then I said, in the future, if you notice that no liberals are calling in to defend the unbelievably petty things you ascribe to them, it's probably a pretty good indication that you're throwing around a straw man and there really isn't any issue there, other than trying to get people whipped up against their neighbors over false assumptions.

Of course, that was the end of the call, his commentary after that was he really didn't "get" my point about the phony issue angle. I'm going to keep calling this guy and setting him straight.

GravatarMr. Bill -

Thanks for posting that list, I'd rather not give the coronation website any hits.

Going throught the list I was automatically thinking of the various payoffs that each of these contributors would expect in return. Lots and lots of finance/banking types on that list . . . a little SS rape anyone?

It also fun to speculate what all those individuals are angling for. Jeff Marcus (in for a cool $100 large) has already served a stint as an ambassador, wonder what's next?

Now I have no illusions that this list would looked a lot different under a Kerry inaugeration, but the Bush junta has been a seething meat-market for quid-pro-quo and this list sure gives a bit of insight into what's to come.

I live in a big ag state -- the kind that would want this. It is my understanding that it is a net energy loss when all the production inputs are considered. I believe they want to produce fuel from corn -- it takes an incredible amount of resources (and energy) to grow this crop year-after-year and the chemicals used are now in the groundwater.

Hear, hear. If the DNC denies Dean the chair, he totally should bolt. I could see him even starting a Ross Perot-like third-party movement, except hopefully this time it would work a little better.

I wasn't really a Dean person in the primaries either, though after a while I started to really like the guy, and I too was won over by Kerry in the general election.

But the right-wing of the Democratic party needs to be defeated. If we can't take control of the party, we should think about starting a new one. I really think that a Dean-led party wouldn't just be a niche entity like the Green Party is, but would have the potential at least to be something that would appeal to a wide range of Americans.

GravatarMaybe this has been discussed, but why are we even discussing this bullshit about Kos and Jerome?

Learn something from the Right -- dismiss it. The right wing never defends a mistake -- they shoot it back at them. EG: Rather than apologize for Armstrong Williams or defend his actions, Limbaugh just went on the attack and declared it part of the liberal media conspiracy.

One way to handle stuff like this is to simply say -- Wrong, this is another bunch of lies from the Republican media, which we know is bought and paid for. End of story.

Put it on them.

GravatarGoing throught the list I was automatically thinking of the various payoffs

I am still "digesting" it -- I immediately posted it to make "amends" for perhaps being snarky when discussing action here. I just hope those that would like to see change can find small ways to work together on it.

Did anyone else think that OH appeared to be over-represented in this listing? Maybe that is my bias and that the "big O" tends to jump off the page/screen. thanks!

GravatarSorry to go OT, but I'm going back to Sarah Deere's question (from previous thread) about what we can do to combat the ass-hats.

The problem of how to deal with them one-on-one has been an ongoing project of mine for some time. One core problem, in my mind, is that these people are remarkably stubborn, and they have burrowed so far into a really evil and awful belief system, a system where you have to just buy into a whole bunch of nonsensical beliefs. If any one part of it doesn't work, the whole thing collapses.

The worst element to fighting them is the almighty power of rationalizion. They just can't be wrong! Ever! And so they are always clinging to the lamest rationalizations, most of which are talking points generated by the Repug press and the WH. For example, 1300 dead American soldiers aren't that big a deal, more people are killed in car accidents. (My response to lame rationalizations: Warn them against using rationalizations that Osama bin laden can use. "You know, bin Laden could use that, and say that 3000 people killed on Sept 11 isn't that bad.")
(to be continued)

I didn't say it was going to be a "ride on a rubber duckie" did I. Please don't construe that one as a call to arms for socialism. Perhaps free markets could be restored to this country -- but I don't need your lectures about what socialism is or is not either. Thanks for offering -- but no thanks.

Gravatar...it takes an incredible amount of resources (and energy) to grow this crop year-after-year and the chemicals used are now in the groundwater.

Say it again. Repeat it. Write your DINOcratic Senator.

We gave the DINOcrats what juice they had after they let the SCLM ice him last spring.

We heard them promise they'd count every vote.

But in the clinch, they again listened to their corporate donors, and blew off the rabble that incidently provide their votes.

Not that they gave a damn if they were counted or not.

GravatarIn America, you have the freedom to give your money either to Coke or to Pepsi, to ConAgra or Tyson, to Shell or to Exxon, and so on.

GravatarJennifer - That is so funny - I got into a very small but rather satisfying email exchange this past week with a local winger radio commentator who also has a column in the Dallas Morning News.

He wrote an op-ed titled: The Definition of Torture should be Changed. He was trying to argue expediency - the ticking bomb - and the loon used the previous night's episode of 24 Hours as a good example. I wrote to him that day and said: Mr. Davis, two things: first - 24 Hours is a TV show. It isn't real. Second - THE ENDS DO NOT JUSTIFY THE MEANS.

The next day I wrote again and asked him how much he was being paid to be objectively pro-torture. Then I asked him what the guidelines were going to be in this redefinition of human degredation and suffering. How much screaming will be allowed?

That provoked a response. He emailed me that it was the oldest trick in the book to accuse the opposition of being paid and how much was I being paid to mischaracterize points. He went on to say that he was talking about high field command making decisions on how to get information on a case by case basis. I answered him that I knew he knew about Armstrong Williams and that he shouldn't be disingenuous. I said it didn't become him - he'd already demonstrated that his ethics were situational. I told him to reread that part of his email about "case by case."

I didn't hear from him again.

Gravatar"In a capitalist democracy, rich and
poor alike have the freedom to
sleep under a bridge at night."

GravatarAside from the lame rationalization is the meme repeated so many times that they take it as faith. "Well, it's OK for Fox to be a little conservative because they are counter balancing liberal networks, like CNN."(The meme of the liberal media is one of my favorites to tackle with these ass-hats.) You deal with by not accepting ANY of their memes. Challenge everything they say. "The liberal media? How is CNN liberal? Do you have examples?" I used to be stunned at how well this works, but no longer. Only one person has ever even tried to counter this with an example, and it was so extraordinarily lame, I was in awe of his lameness. (He said that CNN was biased in the 1996 election in that it portrayed Bob Dole as a frail old man.)
(continued again)

You're right.

But the SCLM plays along with the GOPers.

CNN has already gone on about the "scandal" of liberal blogsters. I'd like to make this go away (I also wish a slow, painful death for Zephyr Teachout) but it's now a "story".

And who, among all the Dems, is going to speak out and say what you suggest? That's the key: you have to have someone, or someones, to speak out.

Sorry to be so nakedly partisan but the only Dem who can pull that off is Howard Dean. And he's the one who is the target here.

GravatarI'd say if you can torture any innocent person into saying whatever you want, torture is pretty useless as an intelligence tool.

Even with a ticking bomb.

The fanatic relishes it- torture after all proves the torturer is the bad guy. The innocent will say anything to avoid it. So where do they get off thinking it's effective?

GravatarLearn something from the Right -- dismiss it. The right wing never defends a mistake -- they shoot it back at them. EG: Rather than apologize for Armstrong Williams or defend his actions, Limbaugh just went on the attack and declared it part of the liberal media conspiracy.

Sounds like a lesson to me....

GravatarThe fanatic relishes it- torture after all proves the torturer is the bad guy. The innocent will say anything to avoid it. So where do they get off thinking it's effective?
Because (at the risk of sounding like a broken record) it's not about information...

...it's about power.

Why do I suddenly think of the old TV show, "The Prisoner"?

GravatarMule Kicker - Oh right, ignore it. Like that will make it go away.

I'm sure some people would just love for us to ignore all the shit the right says and does - after all, that's pretty much how the right got the stranglehold it has on the country. I know I ignored their bullshit for years and years. And this is what it got me - this fucked up fascistic nightmare.

I ain't ignoring anything. I'm yelling, I'm fighting and anyone who doesn't like it can just go to hell.

GravatarBTW, just for fun, here's Kos' page with his original disclaimer at the top.

Notice it's from a year and a half ago.

Also, the disclaimer links to Kos' original post where he announced he'd be working for the Dean campaign - also from a year and a half ago.

And that little item at the top of the page was there for months on end - even after Kos was no longer doing anything for the Dean campaign.

So who are the "prominent bloggers" who somehow missed this and how much are they paid to ignore such things?

GravatarTena sez:

He was trying to argue expediency - the ticking bomb - and the loon used the previous night's episode of 24 Hours as a good example.

I confess I'm a fan of 24 but the wingers always bring up that show to justify torture.

It's a TeeVee show. Not real life. The tortured guy on 24 picks up his paycheck at the end of filming. I doubt that the denizens of Abu Ghraib or "Gitmo" have that luxury.

Then again, Paris and Nicole are used to justify slutdom. It's a messed-up world.

.

GravatarWhy do I suddenly think of the old TV show, "The Prisoner"?

I think about it all the time.

A dose of "Free For All" would go good about now...

Be seeing you!

Gravatar...it takes an incredible amount of resources (and energy) to grow this crop year-after-year and the chemicals used are now in the groundwater.

...sssssso it's inferior to oil in your water? It's not perfect but we don't see how it's not head-and-shoulders above the current insanity.

GravatarTena - painful though it may be, I think we should each target a rwing media clone in our respective areas, and contact them repeatedly. I was really polite with the radio host, (I've called him several times before) because I want to be sure that my calls will continue to be taken. Ultimately I'd like to pull a Jon Stewart on him and his audience with my "you can't be a patriot if you hate your fellow citizens simply because their opinions differ from your own" bit, so I want to remain the civil voice of reason up until that point. And even then, deliver the bomb with a civil and reasonable tone.

We could call it Project Exploding Freeper Head or something and try to take it nationwide.

Gravatar"Susan - that's fine - you are free to do what you will. But intimating that the rest of us "will probably fall in line" and that we are "useful idiots," is hardly fair."

The two parties are "top down" orginizations. The reason Dean scares the crap out of the Democratic leadership is that he ignited a REAL grassroots movement and as a result, we realized that WE HAD POWER. Establishment Dems love to talk about the grassroots as long as it isn't organized and doesn't wield any real power. In other words, we aren't suppose to threaten them.

I used the term "useful idiots" because that's how the leadership PROBABLY views us. We are to behave ourselves, vote for the man they choose and not get too many ideas of our own.

Whether or not you "fall in line" with the choices made by the DNC is your business. I am just saying that usually we do because we don't have too many alternatives. What are we going to do, become Republicans??

Gravatar He was trying to argue expediency - the ticking bomb - and the loon used the previous night's episode of 24 Hours as a good example. I wrote to him that day and said: Mr. Davis, two things: first - 24 Hours is a TV show.

You know, I wonder how many wingers really understand that the torture committed by the Bush administration has nothing to do with the kind of thing you see on 24.

On 24, it really IS a ticking-bomb situation. Jack tortures people ---or even cooler, threatens to expose their daughter to a deadly virus and make them watch her painful death!--- when millions of lives are hanging in the balance.

THis almost NEVER happens in real life. How GOP wingnuts see ass-raping inmates with nightsticks at Abu Ghraib has anything to do with this is beoynd me.

Gravatar(continued)
Aside from the lame rationalization and the accepted meme, there are other "tactics." Cliches, logical fallacies, intimidation, lies, projection, etc. Do not even try to discuss anything with someone who relies on tactics. Attack the tactics. If they are using particularly vile tactics, don't be polite. Respond to them the same way they respond to you. Sooner or later (especially if they can tell you are well-informed or just smarter than they are) they will try to get out of it with a tactic, either "lighten up" or "you libs take this stuff too seriously" or "I didn't come here to have a fight over politics" (usually spoken by someone who called Kerry a traitor at a family gathering) or "liberals are nasty" or whatever. Never let them get off this easy. Always call them out on their tactics.

I suppose a lot of people know all this. Should I go on? I confront people, inperson, on the phone, on the Internet, all the time. If someone supports Bush, and wants to discuss it without a bunch of tactics, I am fine with that. One of my best friends in the history program I am in supported Bush, and we have disussed it, no problem. But she is the rare Bush-supporter who isn't a maniac. (She does think he's an idiot, but she thinks the Middle East (where her family is from) is a mess that needs to be cleansed.)

SHe's the only one who wasn't a lie-believing, yelling, tactics-using whacko!

Don't let them get away with anything!

Gravatar
Why do I suddenly think of the old TV show, "The Prisoner"?

Could it be the bubble of negative media coverage that engulfs Howard Dean whenever he tries to tell his party anything?

GravatarJennifer - I think it's a good idea, but I've already snarked at Davis. Someone else would have to pick him up if it was going to work like you describe.

Otherwise, I intend to continue to snark at Davis often.

GravatarCould it be the bubble of negative media coverage that engulfs Howard Dean whenever he tries to tell his party anything?

It wasn't what I had in mind, but now it is.

That was very, very good....

GravatarI just cancelled my WaPo subscription because of that 100K. Fuck the media.

GravatarSusan - I didn't mean to be harsh to you, so if you took it so, I'm sorry. I understand what you're saying, though you could have made it maybe clearer. I'm sorry I just read it as we'd fall in line because we are useful idiots. I didn't realize you meant from some other standpoint.

But it honestly isn't that big a deal.

We fundamentally agree.

Gravatarrespond to them as they respond to you

break out the ball bats.

GravatarI know I ignored their bullshit for years and years. And this is what it got me - this fucked up fascistic nightmare.

I ain't ignoring anything. I'm yelling, I'm fighting and anyone who doesn't like it can just go to hell.
Tena

You'd make a great Wolverine.

Gravatarwe got turned off of Law & Order because of how often it proved to be lurid rightist fantasy. So much TV is all about arguing, through fantasy with no basis in reality, for racism, sexism, turning back the clock in general. A female character is only interesting if she concedes something ridiculous (unisex bathrooms on Ally McBeal showing an illiterate misunderstanding of sexual equality, etc). Or in the Sopranos: black people steal a car. Its rightful owner calls after them: "NIGGERS!" His wife chides him and he responds (evidently this was logical to the writer) "well, who else?!" There was this HBO original flick with Bill Pullman as Everycop, the entire thing was over-the-top stereotypes (the bad guy was an obsessed Latin lover and the Chief was a crusty Irishman with a growling voice who'd seen everything) and horrible lines that would've been overdone in a Thirties child crime drama.
The only thing worth watching on TV is the Daily Show with Jon Stewart.
And Totally Spies.

And if you get Canadian TV there's Rick Mercer, Venture, Fifth Estate, the institution that is David Suzuki, various random pieces and a few others.
But, in summary, everything is garbage.

GravatarThat was very, very good....

'Twas nothing, sirrah. You come up with better here routinely.

I have found it easier to be witty on a weekend than trying to post in the middle of the week after 10 hours at work and 4 hours with the kids.

Funny, that.

GravatarThe only thing worth watching on TV is the Daily Show with Jon Stewart.
And Totally Spies.

You're right, but you really ought to look up those old episodes of Secret Agent and The Prisoner.

Prophetic- or is it just deja vu?

Gravatar"We fundamentally agree."

Yes, Tina, we definitely do. Let's just keep on kickin' rears only not each others! (I'm winking!)

GravatarWe've watched most of the Prisoner on video in high school.

Gravatarkelley b. - You'd make a great Wolverine.

vis-a-vis Wolverine, I don't think I could be him. However, I could certainly do the Hugh Jackman verson of him.

GravatarDem bones, dem bones!
-

GravatarYes, I know "version" has an "i."

GravatarSusan - and the trolls say we engage in 'group think' here. Hee hee.

Gravatarsteve s., you probably intended to rephrase for your purposes, but I want to post this just because I love it so.

The law, in its majestic equality, forbids the rich as well as the poor to sleep under bridges, to beg in the streets, and to steal bread." - Anatole France

-

Gravatar"

GravatarWhat law is Anatole talking about? Is this Anatole a furrner who hates our chrupes?

GravatarTina, Just was over at Digby's and read your comment about wanting to shave Zephyr's head and brand her a collaborator.

Sure glad you're not mad at me any more!

Note to men: If Tina gets mad at you, and she's wielding her clippers, WATCH OUT!!

GravatarYes, I know "version" has an "i."

I know Tena has an *e*.

Hmmmmmmm.

And Tena, by Wolverine, kelley b. meant Michigan Wolverine, as in U-M.

But that's okay. It's only sportz.

GravatarOh, my bad. Tena with an E!

Gravatarwoowoo!

GravatarThanks, again, pie!

But she would fit right in here, you know.

GravatarBut she would fit right in here, you know.

She'd kick ass, fer shure.

'Night.

Gravatar'Night, pie.

May the Force be with you.
