I had a conversation with WH'ho about this, and s/he thinks that williams is a really isolated case. i confess i'm less believing in the morality of our jounalists today, and i suspect the reason it's not a major story has to do with additional guilty parties not wanting this to be looked into in detail, for fear of where else the trail may lead.

I saw Danny Schechter on a Boston PBS program called Beat the Press, where they talked about this, and the whole conversation was about A Williams's ethics and how that compared to Kos and all that crap. Danny was good, of course, but even he never mentioned that it's outrageous for the government to be secretly buying the opinions of commentators with taxpayer money, for chrissake! That aspect of it seems to have escaped even him, for some reason. I sent him an e-mail about it but he didn't respond. Also John Caroll and Mark Jurkowitz. Weird.

With the corporate talking heads in full drooling kow tow yesterday amid the tanks, fences, spyplanes and wall to wall to wall to wall police does anyone seriously think there will be any press advance of Armstrong's commonly practiced crime?
As "our youngest citizens" scramble to die for Brian Williams and his sniveling ilk and as Europe recoils in shock from freedom's bushfire we few free thinkers need to knoe deep in our bones that we are exiles in a land stolen before our stunned eyes.
It was an icy day.
We buried the cat,
then took her box
and set fire to it
in the back yard.
Those fleas that escaped
earth and fire
died by the cold.

Williams is just the most egregious example because he took money. Enron, lack of WMDs, lying about air-quality post 9/11 or any of the other 34 scandels, the media doesnt think that we can wrap our fat little heads around. They dont sizzle and its too easy for the GOP to bring out the pundints and through chaffe in the air and inslute the man.

Washington had warmed up, the swift storm of the previous day had passed, the sky was overcast but the air wasn't painful in a wind-chill way, and the capital was full of men in cowboy hats and women in long furs. In fact, the night of the inaugural balls became known this year as The Night of the Long Furs.
'The Night of the Long Furs?' WTF is up with this kind of reference?

four legs good: I'm on a mac, so I don't have to deal with messy tech issues.
Aaaa-heh. Not dealing with it is the problem, in this case, I suspect. You might need to download a later codec (compressor/decompressor) for your video player of choice, likely available at microsoft.com, or get the latest version of Media Player for Mac, also at that URL.
I used to use only QuickTime for web vids, but it's a bit glitchy at times (abruptly clipping the last few frames, or adding audio glitches at the end of the file), so I've been using WMV lately. Sorry.

today I heard the news say something about how the prezistump only stayed a grand total of 46.3 minutes at the inaugural functions yesterday, and then went home.
Obviously that 8 o'clock bedtime beckoned. And when you are done up on cocaine all day, you have to rest because it is no joke to your heart at that age.

Grotesqueticle
I live in a big very blue city. I only see the "W" when I leave the comfy confines. My problem is that I feel helpless in the political process - if you think the Republican party has a stranglehold on politics, you haven't seen the Chicago Democratic machine. I have to venture out into Red land to make a difference.

Clone Wolf...good points. Enron and the other stories you mentioned are complicated and hard to tell, particularly on television. That's why TV goes ape over a story like Scott Peterson. As for print, its share of the public's attention continues to decline. Most cities have only 1 newspaper now, and chances are its owned by a chain bent more on maximizing revenue and stock prices than journalism.

Don't assume because nothing new has been written about Williams and anyone else involved in the Payola Scandal, that reporters are giving up. Williams and the DOE were busted because of a FOIA request. There were many more filed after that one came out, but these things take a little time. What's it been, 2 weeks? There will be more, since there's no way in hell these corporate thugs only bought off one guy. Ain't no way.

OT--but i really feel that this story must not be buried:
A Boulder Roman Catholic church's plan to bury the remains of fetuses from a local abortion clinic was assailed Thursday by the clinic's director, who called it "a cynical exploitation of private grief for political purposes" by the Catholic Church and the mortuary that gave the ashes to the parish.
Dr. Warren Hern, director of the Boulder Abortion Clinic, issued a scathing statement in response to Sacred Heart of Mary Church's announcement that it would stage a ceremony Sunday morning to bury the ashes of what Hern describes as surgical tissue from abortions and what the church describes as babies. The event marks the 32nd anniversary of the Roe vs. Wade Supreme Court decision legalizing abortion.
On Thursday, the reaction split along the expected lines, with abortion-rights supporters calling the burial a devastating invasion of privacy and abortion foes framing it as opportunity for wounded women to grieve.
A state health official said the arrangement between the church and Crist Mortuary doesn't violate state laws.
The mortuary, which says it has an agreement to retrieve the tissue from the abortion clinic and cremate it, has been delivering the ashes to the parish without Hern's knowledge since 2001.

The GOP has always been able to find a few self-loathing blacks to pimp for their policies by massaging their egos (and in Armstrong's case, pad a wallet). The latest laughable effort in the conservative PR minstrel show is known as Project 21. Sad and embarrassing.
It's a race to the bottom between the self-loathing queers, sell-out blacks and the wingnut women of the Concerned Women for America ilk when it comes to getting in bed with the GOP.
Hey, didn't the Enterprise destroy the power of Ba'al?
nope. check it out.
It was the God of Abraham. Whose lost some muscle mass over the years I'd venture-
"Then Jehu called a meeting of all the people of the city and said to them, "Ahab hardly worshiped Baal at all compared to the way I will worship him! Summon all the prophets and worshipers of Baal, and call together all his priests. See to it that every one of them comes, for I am going to offer a great sacrifice to Baal. Any of Baal's worshipers who fail to come will be put to death." But Jehu's plan was to destroy all the worshipers of Baal. Then Jehu ordered, "Prepare a solemn assembly to worship Baal!" So they did. He sent messengers throughout all Israel summoning those who worshiped Baal. They all came and filled the temple of Baal from one end to the other. And Jehu instructed the keeper of the wardrobe, "Be sure that every worshiper of Baal wears one of these robes." So robes were given to them"
"Then Jehu went into the temple of Baal with Jehonadab son of Recab. Jehu said to the worshipers of Baal, "Make sure that only those who worship Baal are here. Don't let anyone in who worships the LORD!" So they were all inside the temple to offer sacrifices and burnt offerings. Now Jehu had surrounded the building with eighty of his men and had warned them, "If you let anyone escape, you will pay for it with your own life."
"As soon as Jehu had finished sacrificing the burnt offering, he commanded his guards and officers, "Go in and kill all of them. Don't let a single one escape!" So they killed them all with their swords, and the guards and officers dragged their bodies outside. Then Jehu's men went into the fortress of the temple of Baal. They dragged out the sacred pillar used in the worship of Baal and destroyed it. They broke down the sacred pillar of Baal and wrecked the temple of Baal, converting it into a public toilet. That is what it is used for to this day." 2 Kings 10:18-27 NLT

Outgoing Democratic Party chairman Terry McAuliffe sent a defiant message to members as Republicans celebrated Mr Bush's inauguration.
"Today... Republicans are hoping that we'll fade into the background," he wrote. "They're hoping that for the next two years we'll sit on the
sidelines, and let them ram their agenda through.
"But we Democrats will never step aside. While Bush tries to build his
legacy on a series of attacks against working families, the middle class and seniors, Democrats will be there to stand up."

Vicki...yep, the GOP trots out the Lord, Uzis and the specter of gays every election cycle, and the tactic almost always works. Then the GOP mostly forgets what it promised. Miserable Failure, who just last summer was all atwitter that gays might marry, now says he won't pursue a constitutional amendment banning gay marriage as long as the Federal Defense of Marriage Act is constitutional. The reason Bushboy is never held accountable for his crimes:
Pre-POTUS: 1) Daddy was a congressman when Bushboy violated military law. 2) Daddy was POTUS when Bushboy violated SEC rules & regs at Harken Energy.
Post-POTUS: 1) The mass media is owned and operated by the corporations and they never sensationalize Bushboy's lethal crimes the way they did Clinton's
blow-job. 2) The American people stupidly elected a Gooper congress which wouldn't impeach or indict Bushboy if he was caught banging the cows on his ranch!

There is something very childlike about the Bush administration. Like children, they manage to make very unequal things equal. Like children, they cry that so-and-so did it too! And besides, everybody else does it! And, like children, they came into office thinking they were older than they really were. And, like children, they can't possibly do anything really serious or damaging or hurtful to anybody.
