Well, as I posted below, Mr. McAuliffe certainly has his finger on the pulse:
Outgoing Democratic Party chairman Terry McAuliffe sent a defiant message to members as Republicans celebrated Mr Bush's inauguration.
"Today... Republicans are hoping that we'll fade into the background," he wrote. "They're hoping that for the next two years we'll sit on the
sidelines, and let them ram their agenda through.
"But we Democrats will never step aside. While Bush tries to build his
legacy on a series of attacks against working families, the middle class and seniors, Democrats will be there to stand up."

Nothing short of complete control will do. Until the media is willing to present nothing but conservatives and conservative views, then they simply demonstrate how liberally biased they are.

Privatized Social Security
The column by Morton Kondracke in The A-J on Jan. 12 was very good. I wish Mr. Kondracke would have included some facts which would have bolstered his case for privatizing Social Security.
I would refer you to an article several years ago that appeared in the Investor's Business Daily publication. It points out that three counties in East Texas pulled out of the Social Security System in 1981 and set up their own privatized retirement program. Congress closed the loophole that allowed that two years later.
The Texas program makes more money than Social Security writes the author, Stephen Glass. Besides retirement, it functions as a generous life-insurance policy, paying the survivors a minimum of $50,000.
The counties involved are Galveston, Brazoria and Matagorda. The employees and employers kick in an equal amount, just as in Social Security, but the money doesn't go to Washington. Instead, the fund works like a private annuity.
The results have been far superior to Social Security. Since 1981, it has averaged 6.5 percent annual return, compared to 2.2 percent for a worker on Social Security.
Burt Jamus, a 40-year-old middle manager for Galveston County, figures he will receive $5,474 a month after he retires, compared with $1,042 under Social Security. I wonder if he wishes he were still covered by Social Security?
Let your readers reconsider their position on whether Social Security should be privatized!

Exactly. Can't convince students on campuses of the merits of conservative philosophy? Attack administrators for hiring "biased" faculty. Can't convince the populace of the merits of conservatism (especially since it is unclear what that means these days)? Launch a full-fledged propaganda channel and bully every other outlet to fall in line. Can't convince African Americans that your racist, piece of shit party will ever represent their interests? Hire Toms to promote your policies in exchange for cold hard cash. One would think that the party of personal responsibility wouldn't have to resort to these measures to promote its now-disjointed and incoherent philosophies.

After how the Dems rolled over the certifying the electors and the bowing to Rice at her hearing (so far), I find that laughable.
And it's easy for Terry to say that when he's one foot out the door. The Dems (as a unit) had plenty of opportunity to shout that Bush had no clothes during the 2004 election.

Well, look at what the Repug upstarts did in Kansas and look at the kind of organization and coordination MLKJ was in charge of.
People like us across the nation, who are experiencing some liberal fire in their hearts, should get involved in their local politicas. Get elected or help a friend get elected. Take it over.
Atrios should try to start coordinating stuff, instead of just providing a place for us to learn about things and... vent.
We should organize something as to how we're all going to spread the truth around our communities, on a consistent basis. Just like the anti-abortion movement did.

I see structural biases that have continuously accumulated to the point where those out of power are constantly undercut before they get out of bed in the morning.
Just one example: Who says that the media MUST serve as the government's
stenographer, taking down and reporting every official pronouncement as it it were fact? No wonder the American public can't get a clear and accurate picture
of what's being done in their name. Without verification, governmental claims should not be given headline billing no matter who they originate from. If CBS can be chastised for failing to verify a story claiming to document Bush's escape from service, then every news media ought to be chastised for conveying claims by the administration without first getting dissenting opinions.
The model for political news ought to be the current model for science news. No matter how authoritative a pronouncement is in science news magaines, reporters are obliged to call up and get the responses of a wide range of experts, and any dissenting views (and praise) are reported at the same time as the
original announcement.
The news media have this thing about being first with breaking news--even if they are reporting BS. Frankly, most of the public couldn't tell you who got a story out first. I suspect only people in the news profession even care. Within minutes of any urgent news, one can get the same information from a dozen sources.
The media would be a hundred times more useful if routine governmental announcements that are timed just before deadlines were automatically delayed 24 hours in order to allow reporters to check out the veracity of the claims. I'm a news junky, but I find very little news that couldn't wait 24 hours for a thorough doublecheck. I generally prefer weekly news magazines that make such an attempt to get a range of views.
Instead of 50 or more reporters sitting in the White House pressroom (talking to each other) and waiting for the word from on high, I'd have them out researching stories in every nook and cranny. The story that readers deserve to get is not what officials say but what they do when they are not in front of the
cameras. Stop showing the President waving to non-existant crowds. We've seen enough of President's waving for a dozen lifetimes.
The media is acting like an arm of the government. That encourages and
reinforces governmental spin and outright lies. If TV news is going to boil the day's news down to a few headlines that get repeated from 3 to 5 times in hype for the show, then they damn well ought to insure the listeners that they have verified or tried to verify the picture they are presenting.
I've watched Bryan Williams for years with interest because I admired the insight and candor he tried to bring when he was on CNBC. Now that he's the anchor of NBC Evening News, he is squeezed into even smaller slots between a dozen prescription drug commercials. Although an occa

Key findings indicate that, in general, the Galveston Plan offers higher initial benefits than Social Security to workers with higher earnings and/or in cases where there are no dependents that would qualify under Social Security. Social Security tends to offer higher initial benefits than the Galveston Plan to workers with lower earnings and/or to families with dependents who qualify for Social Security benefits.
The biggest issue, I think, is whether 'Galvestonizing' Social Security en masse would distort the market for conservative guaranteed minimum funds. Any economists want to chip in?

If in the marketplace of ideas conservatism is unable to withstand the competition of liberalism, does that not mean that it is the weaker idea? Seems to me this need to eliminate all dissent/liberalism demonstrates the inherent weaknesses of modern American conservatism, and not the weakness of liberalism. If liberalism was really so weak then it would simply have failed on it's own when there still was something resembling balance/fairness in the coverage time each received.
If conservatism is so powerful, so strong, and so correct, then it should be able to withstand scrutiny, critiques, and criticism without fear and without the need to claim any other POV is somehow inherently anti-American/treasonous. Yet despite the current stranglehold the conservative POV has in the corporate media market on top of the dominance of the conservative media (talk radio&FoxNews) there is such fear of the competing POV that the conservative critics of media have to still claim that the media is run by the "liberal elites" to rebut anything that contradicts the "all-powerful" conservative viewpoint.
Then of course there is the inherent "shrillness" liberalism is supposedly full of, yet when people like A coulter publish screeds denouncing all liberals as Traitors (titling the book that way as well as hailing it as the base premise), that isn't shrillness, it is simply the reality of the situation according to those that claim liberals are being shrill. The degree of inherent contradiction between the words of conservatives these days and the actual reality is staggering in it's scale, and it is hard to see how it maintains this without collapsing at some point under the weight of it's own deceptions.
What is really tragic is that this method requires the willing blindness of its followers to work, and that America is unfortunately really prone to such. Look at the anti-intellectualism that is rampant throughout conservatism these days in America. One only finds isolated pockets that do not see intellectual capability as inherently a bad thing. So it is no wonder that myths like liberal media bias and the idea that conservatism/religion is under siege/persecution in today's America.
This is truly sickening to see in a country that has legally mandated freedom of speech/expression, particularly political speech from its inception.

You have got to be joking.
This week they interviewed some nutjob from FreeRepublic claiming that letting innauguration protesters have an area set up for them was like setting up an area for Osama Bin Ladin and Saddam Hussein.
Also, they interviewed Karl Rove and when questioned about Bush's low ratings, Rove responded that there are plenty of polls that say Bush is doing great. The interviewer didn't think to ask, "What f'n polls?"

How about the NYPost today, whining that that the conservatives only influence 20% of media. As "nine tenths of editors and national reporters vote Democratic."
There are out of the closet Dems. in the news media who clearly have a conservative bias because they are liberal and do not want to be perceived as being biased: I give you Nick Kristoff as an example. Interestingly, many conservatives do not have such a fear of even apparent impropriety.
Additionally, even if the majority of reporters and editors are libs, the important questions are who controls what stories are pursued in the first place and who are the big names in punditry and deciding editorial content. In both cases, even if these people are nominally Dems., they are entirely beholden to moneyed Republican interests and know that if they stray from the Rethug party line they will get necklaced. Look at what happened to Dan Rather vs. what hasn't happened to Judith Miller.
As Greg Palast points out, it may very well be the case that the majority of people in the news biz are Dems., but the media is in it for the money and power and the money and even more importantly the power comes from cozying up to the Rethugs.
I am sure Woody Guthrie's guitar might have a few things to add here ...

Hilton Faces Theft & Vandalism Charges
Socialite Paris Hilton is to face charges of theft and vandalism after allegedly stealing a copy of her One Night In Paris DVD from a Los Angeles newsstand last month. Images from the newsagents' surveillance camera have already appeared in US tabloids and seem to clearly show the Simple Life star reaching out for a copy of the X-rated DVD and then putting it in her bag. And now, according to scandal show Celebrity Justice, the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department is getting involved. Swing News newsstand employee Jerry Castro, who was on duty when Hilton paid him a visit, claims the socialite was in great spirits until she saw her DVD was on sale. Castro says, "As soon as she saw that we were selling her videos and we had her on display she was livid. She was using profanity to the ultimate. She threw her eighty cents change at me and took the video and said, 'I'm taking this and I'm not buying it.'" The surveillance video seems to back up Castro's claims that Paris not only took the DVD but also tried to rip a poster advertising it.

Human beings are no different than bacteria. You give them the perfect growing medium and nutrients, which we've had for the last several hundred years, and their population will boom. S/he went to the dep't mailroom with a bundle and placed them in the mailboxes of about 2 dozen notorious losers s/he couldn't stand, or had just heard nasty gossip about.
It was the talk of the dep't for several days, profs and grad students and even secretarries asking "Did you get a Final Exit?" People recognized the pattern soon enough of assholes getting the books.

spork--Tom Carson, who was a Village Voice film crit at the time liked "Ishtar" and wrote a nasty letter about it to Andrew Sarris and David Edelstein, both of whom were dismissive (but not hostile). Carson's take was that "Ishtar" reminded him of Beckett--two no-talent hacks stranded in the desert facing serious discomfort and probable death for a dishonest cause they didnt understand, but who continued to sing cheerful songs. Carson though that with the credit "Story by Samuel Beckett," critics would have fallen over themselves to praise it.
That said, the production of "Ishtar" lent itself to major skepticism. In my favorite incident among many, they spent a fortune to shoot on location in Morocco, then, once there, decided the desert was too flat. So they spent more money hiring bulldozers to sculpt the sand into dunes--i.e. make it look like a Hollywood backlot desert. One of many.

Furthermore, I think they are told that over and over by Rush and others. Unfortunately for them, the culture is not going to do a 180 and suddenly be focused on a bunch of middle Americans in sansabelt slacks and pull on pants with sparkly sweatshirts.

OT: Why does the stock market hate the Bush inauguration? Down about 240 pts since Wednesday.

let me recommend to you "the treasures of darkness" by thorkild jacobsen. although the theory is dated, this is a great book for facts about the mesopotamian pantheon. the annunaki are a set of dieties understood to be just below the main gods in the hierarchy of the pantheon. i actually disagree with a lot of the rest of the dominant ideas about what to make of them, but essentially, their main function is in ritual and narrative, where they are used when individuals want to call upon a "complete" roster of gods.

Unfortunately for them, the culture is not going to do a 180 and suddenly be focused on a bunch of middle Americans in sansabelt slacks and pull on pants with sparkly sweatshirts.
Maybe, but I think there are already zones of the country where "their culture" dominates. The scene on Planet Seattle is different from, say, Planet Little Rock or Planet Deep South. There won't be one dominant culture, but a mosaic of cultures. The "red Americans" who feel left out only feel that way based on the victimology programmed into their heads that "their" culture is being endangered by "them" when in fact they don't understand how all the different strains of art can intermingle freely.
Maybe there should be a sort of Exchange program. Seattle or San Francisco send their Teatro Zinzanni and "red" states send us Blue Collar Comedy Tour. That way, we understand each other.

Cat deaths.
Absolute favorite cat of all time, died of a stroke. Actually, had a stroke, and we put him to sleep.
We let his "brother" out (they'd been indoor cats since we got 'em, as we had apartments mostly), and he roamed the grounds of the house. Until a month or so before we left town to go to seminary.
I ran over his head in the driveway. Never have quite forgiven myself for that.
Lost 3 cats since marriage, all told. Have all of 'em, as ashes, in little wooden boxes. Figure I'll join 'em someday. and will it all to my daughter.

End of Days?
Honestly, the world has gone from strange to passing strange in a great hurry. Little vignettes of thoughts intertwine in my mind to create a pastiche of uncertainty. CBS Radio news reports that Billy Graham thought the Lord interceded in the election. (Hey, Billy, that was not the Lord. Perhaps you should talk to Oral Roberts about the presence of evil in the world.) Dick Cheney promising the Cheney anyone who messes with the USA. Jingoism pushed beyond extremism into barbarism. And on and on.
I have never felt more uncertain of my country. Those of you who blithely answer, two years and we will take back the House and Senate are sadly mistaken. With the media so tightly controlled and the gateways to American thought dominated by fruitcakes and losers: how exactly are you going to get the message out? You say it will become obvious: it already has, but only to those with the will to perceive. Those who oppose us apparently can believe damned near any piece of bile expelled with great force by the Talking heads and monkey butts on the television and radio.
So, we have decisions predicated on misinformation and presented my means of misdirection as viable truths when they are nothing more than banality multiplied exponentially by the dreadful deadfall of the airwaves. Unless you can explain what is happening to the people, your chances of success are nil. If you cannot find the means to communicate this information: you are less than nil.
I am with WGG. It is high time to stop wishing and hoping that things will get better. It is time to take to the trenches to expose the evil incarnate these men who would be kings truly represent.

While critics focus on the dating ban, the prestige of the university's academic programs outside Christian studies has increased under Jones' leadership, said Republican state Sen. Mike Fair. Fair said Jones increased the visibility of other degree options and the standards for those programs.

Facts have, so far, not been an impediment to the Republican impulse to whine a lot about how they are being suppressed, even though they own the mass media and control (by hook or by crook) the three branches of our government.
It matters not that what they say is completely and obviously false. They just keep saying it, knowing that their hardcore base of brain-rotted morons will believe it.

I'd like to dissent on the truism that language acquisition skills "close" after childhood. I know about Chomsky's wired grammar and it's essential to learn at least one language before you're 5.
But the Modern Language Association has conducted several studies showing that adults familiar with parts of speech can learn new languages, especially written ones, faster than kids. What adults lack is the imitative skill, so they never get the accents and inflections or certain phonemes just right. Languages like Navajo, where every last iterative nuance is crucial, are nearly impossible for all but the best adult mimics.
But you can learn to read and write a language faster than a kid, and can speak most of them with some help from an accent coach (and biofeedback screens). I find many lazy Murkins (not anyone here) using this too-old truism to avoid foreign language study, while hiring foreign nannies to speak to their kids.

Tena,
That is the rub, isn't it? WGG and I remember what it was like in the early sixties. Remember, this has happened before. When MLK travled the countryside trying to get people to become aware of the evils of racism his message would have been lost except for the civil disobedience.
Nightly pictures on the TV of the hate that these people represent was enough of an elixer to get the engine of change started. With Lester Maddox and his ax handle barring African Americans from his diner, and police gleefully waterhosing or setting their dogs loose on the crowds of peaceful protesters filling the TV screens: people began to change.
Make no mistake: these are the same people who reveled in Jim Crow and the other means of keeping people down. The only antidote to such a thing is civil disobedience.
I am not saying it is easy, for it is not, but we need something beyond a bunch of people being herded into protest zones. We need a general uplifting of the people.

The "left" can really overthrow the most heavily armed government on earth.
UPI Intelligence Correspondent
Published 1/15/2003 7:14 PM
Israel is embarking upon a more aggressive approach to the war on terror that will include staging targeted killings in the United States and other friendly countries, former Israeli intelligence officials told United Press International.
Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon has forbidden the practice until now, these sources said, speaking on condition of anonymity.
The Israeli statements were confirmed by more than a half dozen former and currently serving U.S. foreign policy and intelligence officials in interviews with United Press International.
But an official at the Israeli Embassy in Washington told UPI: "That is rubbish. It is completely untrue. Israel and the United States have such a close and co-operative intelligence relationship, especially in the field of counter-terrorism, that the assertion is ludicrous."
With the appointment of Meir Dagan, the new director of Israel's Mossad secret intelligence service, Sharon is preparing "a huge budget" increase for the spy agency as part of "a tougher stance in fighting global jihad (or holy war)," one Israeli official said.
First impulse is to just ignore this. Then I remember the USS Liberty and think, why would our government stop them?

Refused to help the S. Vietnamese. Denied the slaughter was happening. Blamed it on the CIA Couldn't figure out why all those Vietnamese were taking to the seas in home made rafts. Guess the were trying to save money on a cruise.
The last US soldier departed Saigon in march, '73. Stayed behind, some 10k defense department personnel. Also stayed behind: a whole lot of aircraft in Thailand, and a whole bunch of aircraft on carriers off the coast. The last american fatal casualty in vietnam occurred some time in late April, '75.
Nixon, and then Ford (with the notable assistance of one Don vonRumsfeldt) had been in charge for 7 years by that time. more SOUTH Vietnamese were killed in the war AFTER Nixon took over than had been killed before. It is one of the supreme, tragic ironies that immigrant Vietnamese see their loyalty as being to the GOP.
The flight of refugees from Vietnam, and the infliction of outrages upon those collaborators unlucky enough to be caught, are (in the brutal real-politik which inspired bush's invasion of Iraq) pretty much natural consequences in the aftermath of decades'-long civil strife. Remember, like VonRumsfeldt remarked in the ruins of the looting of iraq: Democracy is not orderly, and people can make mistakes with freedom...
Or did you miss that one, shitwipe?
I inform you of these facts in order to set a context in which to insist, again, that you provide sources and cites to substantiate your intemperate assertions. Alternatively, esad...

Air America Radio, the liberal talk network that was dismissed, derided and unceremoniously yanked off the air in LA two weeks after its April debut, is returning to the airwaves here--this time under the aegis of the nation's largest radio chain.
Clear Channel Communications is announcing today that its KXTA-AM (1150) will switch to "progressive talk" on Feb. 3...'We have the Rush Limbaughs and the Sean Hannitys now, who have moved pretty far to the right. So there's all this constituency to the left of that,' said Gave Hobbs, vp of news, talk and sports programming for CC, which owns eight stations locally and more than 1200 nationwide..."

GMT: 'the rights policies are fucking pwned' do you mean owned? please clarify!!!
Uh, it might be clearer to you if you didn't clip the quote, dumbass.
steve s.--I find it easy to believe that even obnoxious trolls don't like Bush and didn't bote for him. I mean they're capable of getting on the 'nets, navigating HaloScan and dealing with hostility, which is more than W can do. Maybe that's just me thinking positively that even trolls are better than W. Or negatively, from a world-historical perspective.
In any case, I'm dying for someone to ask me to translate the Hawaiian refrain from Warren Zevon's "Hula Hula Boys." Doozer left the thread last night when it was relevant to his comment, but you'll do if you care. Don't tell me you know already

I see no advantage to supporting Left fascism as I would in supporting Right Authoritarianism.
Speaking only for myself, i have seen no evidence in anything you have deposited in this thread or others that have borne the insult of your presesnce which conduces me to regard you with anything but contempt. I don't give a rats fart in a furnace what you feel the advantage of supporting. It would not make me feel more certain of the correctness of it, and i would feel no more confidence in my position to know you or any like you endorsed it...

thanks by the way, you're a real sweetheart and it's really something to have you compliment me because I think you are one of the smartest people I've ever talked to.
Way way back when I first started blogging, I used to make this point. Once the media begins to get the idea that money can be made off of being liberal, being liberal will suddenly be a good thing instead of a bad thing. You're right - that's all it's about.
This sounds a lot like what Mr. Tena was telling me was in the WSJ yesterday. I don't have a subscription so I can't read it online. He reads it at work, so I'm just going by what he said.

Thanks, GMT. Good site. I think it is important that my sons see photos of what is really going on. It is very easy for boys to get "caught up" in the GI Joe mentality that pervades our pop culture, and I need all the help I can get to make them understand that war is not a movie.
So, I really appreciate the links.

NBCnews is publicly congratulating itself for not being as stupid as Dan Rather.
Shall we review their pathetic performances as journalists --the
reporting and lying on behalf of ARnold SChwartzenegger. They had to forced to fire Shriver and then moved her although she should have been asked to leave and if she weren't such a monumental ego maniac
she would have understood and left on her own.

Yeah, millions of Americans suffered when Clinton was president, and we always complained about being told what to do.

"DWD, you fail to understand that Tena values her personal comfort over liberty. She comes here to whine and spew, but when push comes to shove, she's just another docile do-nothing sheep. Don't expect anything from her except an endless display of arrogance, stupidity, self-esteem issues, and kneejerk/panicky antics."
Shit, I'm never had any beef with Tena, but I can tell you this, she's not a spewer, nor a sheep, and is never arrogant, never stupid, and shows little signs of knee jerk antics.
She, frankly, seems like a regular old nice person.
And Dearest Vicki, you finally fragged me! Suggesting that I was NP's Dooshbag? That was some cold shit.
As for NPD's last stand, (see tail dragging retreat) at least he got one thing right...

steve--Zevon lived in Hawaii where his son in middle school learned the native language. The chorus means literally "Go on and sing the chorus," but it's rarely used that way. It's used idiomatically to say "Stop stalling--get to the point." I like how the literal meaning is self-performative in the song and the idiomatic meaning applies to the cuckolded newlywed. I also like Zevon's sporadic falsetto whine to indicate emotional duress.

steve simels |

steve--I miss Zevon too--I couldn't believe him recording "Knockin' on Heaven's Door," much less doing a "straight" "restrained" version devoid of any irony except the big obvious one. That,in context, certainly tops any of Bryan Ferry's forays into ironic/unironic covers.
Which brings up the question, have you changed your opinion re "Bryan Ferry can't sing." I mean I know he can't but he can't in just the right way repeatedly, establishing a pattern of first rate off-kilter interpretations, if you care. I still love the "These Foolish Things" album, which you didn't, and I always heard as funny. "It's My Party" is the most obvious joke (Ferry in interviews said he didn't change the genders because he didn't want to compromise the innocence of the song by wondering who might think he was gay), but the real laughfest for me was always "Piece of My Heart," all the more so for loving the Janis J version.

Yes I have changed my mind about
Ferry. I'm still not wildly enthusiastic
about the cover stuff, but once
Roxy got into their moonlight and
roses phase I came around. Actually,
keep waiting for some smart alt-
country singer to do a cover of
"Dance Away."
Seriously.
True story: my first ex-wife went
out on a date with Ferry during the
first Roxy tour. She was maybe 17,
but Detroit had a very tight knit
rock community back then, which is
how she got fixed up with him.
Anyway, he pulled up at her parents
house in a sports car, and they
just sort of drove around. She said
all he did the whole time
was cry about how he
couldn't get it up.
Explains some of the songs, don't
you think?

I watched Timmy with Rahm Emannuel last week and noticed that he blindsided Rahm with a blind quote that happended to be from Clinton. He said "do you agree with this quote" w/o letting him know where it came from. Does Timmy do that often, or only to dems?
Live Free or Die |
01.21.05 - 7:05 pm | #
This is actually the dems fault. The DNC Chair should be there asking Timmy why do you have right-wing commentators and supposed middle of theroad people, while you never have left wing commentators? Until the dems take on the media, then it will always be this way.

Ha--I also remember a story from a Vanity Fair profile of Jerry Hall from the early 80s. She was understandably touchy on the subject of leaving Ferry for Jagger and volunteered how he was really the one who left. Why? She took him to meet the folks in TX and during supper a big roach crawled up the wall and Dad got up and smashed it. Bryan was never the same.... Do you remember that one? Jerry was on the cover, if that helps.
I also met a NY sound engineer briefly who had worked with many famous people. He said that in the studio Ferry was the nicest gentlemen he ever met, and genuinely geek-knowledgeable about sound engineer concerns. He also said Van Morrison was a grunting eye-rolling near psycho who could barely communicate anything, and even then only through assistants and with acute foul temper. Van would still make a superior Sec of State to the current nominee.

Dunno. Thought it was obvious.

Grand Moff Texan
This is an incorrect use of "pwned." The term (as I understand it) means "to dominate by some ridiculous factor" (mcnabb fuckin' pwnes limbaugh's fat ass!).
what you're suggesting is that the world abhors us policy. disgust and apprhension do not equal pwning.

Draco:
I know somebody who works with Ferry
and has for more than ten years.
She says he's dumb as dirt.
The problem with the left is that our whole model of changing opinions—that contrary facts will alter people’s views—is inherently flawed. Mundane, oafish Americans, in a national competition to see how many $3.99 “support our troops” ribbon magnets they can fit onto the backs of their Suburbans, simply aren’t interested in reality. These people won’t be convinced of any upsetting facts that they can avoid thinking about, or can stave off with the crude set of official denials and made-up stories the White House provides for them and the press dutifully parrots. Let’s face it; there is a sizable chunk of the population who deny the validity of evolution—evolution. Who are we kidding, thinking we can make them see the errors in Social Security privatization?
People don’t think much; they’re far more interested in feeling. God and country feel good; corruption and war crimes don’t. So when we see pictures of our soldiers engaged in less-than-admirable conduct, “values voters” cry out—against the reporters who brought it to our attention, who had the audacity to burst our imperial bubble. How dare these liberal media elites violate our right to not know?
This obsessive ignorance is a hallmark of the religious. It is a necessary reaction to encroaching reality. If you want to go on believing things that are simply and demonstrably untrue, you need to develop a selective blindness.
WMD. Jessica Lynch. Mission Accomplished. Pat Tillman. Liberation. All lies. Not mistakes, lies. Americans choose the lie every day. And why shouldn’t they? The truth is a stark void of insecurity, relativity, and struggle—who the hell wants that?

steve--"Dumb as dirt" doesn't rule out geeky sound engineer concerns or gentlemanly manners. I still find "DAD" hard to believe re Ferry if only for his appreciation of fin-de-siecle Viennese decadence and Weimar decedence applied to the 70s rock culture he made a point of standing apart from (He was always the debonair chicster weay of the scene and unlucky in love). If nothing else he was way canny in his choice of inimitable persona.
I don't know either--maybe he just looked at pictures from those eras.

An arab freep got offed in Jersey this week?
That's what's been going around. But the police went out of there way to say it was probably robbery. No Christian artifacts were desecreted. All of his money was gone. And there were no messages left indicating that it was politically motivated.
Of course his wife and kids got killed with him so you sound pretty cold about it. What a lot of people not in North Jersey aren't realizing is that there was another execution style killing in Newark the month before and it definitely wasn't political. That was probably a gang initiation.
