Gravatartooooooo sweet.

GravatarCute cat.

I just started Friday Sex Toy Blogging over at my lowly (and rarely updated blog). I thought that might be a way to get me to post more often. Nothing else has worked!

GravatarMy Exclusive Interview With Former Sen. Birch Bayh

This morning I had the unique opportunity to interview former Indiana Democrat Birch Bayh from his office in Washington, DC. Bayh was a Member of the United States Senate from 1963-1981, during which time he served on the Judiciary Committee, the Appropriations Committee, and the Environment and Public Works Committee.

Senator Bayh authored two Amendments to the Constitution -- the Twenty-fifth Amendment on Presidential and Vice Presidential succession, and the Twenty-sixth Amendment lowering the voting age to 18 years of age. He is the author of Title IX to the Higher Education Act, which mandates equal opportunities for women students and faculty; co-author of the Bayh-Dole Act, which revitalized the nation's patent system; and chief architect of the Juvenile Justice Act.

Jonathan Singer: When you were first elected to the Senate in 1962, your freshman class included notable liberals like Abe Ribicoff, George McGovern, Dan Inouye, Gaylord Nelson, and of course yourself. That group didn't arrive from nowhere, though. What was happening in the 50s and early 60s that helped foster your generation, and can it be replicated today?

Bayh's answer, plus the entire interview, available here

Gravatarnice hands.

GravatarThat looks like you're trying to tango with that cat!!

CS, that was farking hilarious!!

GravatarWell, Mr. Gonzales, what is your attitude on kitty torture?

GravatarSmalfish:

Hey, what the heck. Don't get too excited. I'm starting with something that definitely won't get me in trouble, and I'll, er, work my way up. Let's see just how far I can push that envelope.

GravatarI love cats so. That is a sweet photo. Off to dinner. More cats please, sir?

GravatarRexroth's Daughter

Nice catch, I've never been lucky enough to site a big cat in the wild.

GravatarOur cat would never let us hold him like that. He thinks he's much too dignified for our hu''man"-handling.

GravatarRexroth's daughter, now that is WAY cool!!

A bobcat outside your window. I don't know if I'm more jealous about the bobcat or the window.

GravatarI love little pussy
Her coat is so warm
And if I don't hurt her
She'll do me no harm...

GravatarUmmmm! Kitties...

Gravatargeor3ge! Haven't seen you in ages.

GravatarThe things ya gotta do for tuna around here....

GravatarLooks to me like some bright young blogger bites his fingernails.....

Gravatar"I'll bide my time."

GravatarAnother Bruce--
I tried to get a shot of those cats for three years. I moved to Washington, and the person who replaced me got the shot just like that (snap of fingers here). He sent it to me.

GravatarLJ Ummmm interesting blog entry. Now excuse me while I go jump into a vat of ice.

GravatarCause I have neither bobcats or windows at work.

GravatarThe vibrator is fully inserted and on high, now where is that pussy.

GravatarCS - not only is it kitty porn, they're definitely underage. Contributing to the delinquency of kittens!

GravatarFourlegsgood--
If you had windows, what would you see? Are you better off without them?

GravatarI'll give you 5 seconds to let go of my paws.

I mean, look has his eye's, hard to tell if that's contentedness or I'mgonnafuckyouupness.

GravatarCats!!!! Blog with No Name: Friday cat blogging

GravatarFLG, or both.

GravatarHere you go, Atrios!

GravatarIf you had windows, what would you see? Are you better off without them?

Ummm, I'm on the edge of campus so the view would be fairly nice.

I'm moving in a week to another building off campus and I have a gigantic window and a view of a golf course.

It's off campus though so I'm pissed off.

GravatarAwww, lil' puss-puss play patty-cake with Daddy.

GravatarAtrios,

A key of Catnip for the kitties... may they purr in peace 'til the great maker calls them home to the big fishbowl in the sky...

Gravatar4LG--
Actually no matter what's out the window, it's always good to have the light, that frame of reference, otherwise, you might was well be in a sensory deprivation tank.

GravatarAtrois is playing patty cake with kitty?

GravatarPlay a recorder. It drives the cats wild. They'll try to get inside it.

GravatarIt's off campus though so I'm pissed off.

FLG, you're in academia? You know being pissed off is in the job description.

Atrios, your kitty has a pretty profile.

GravatarThere is another thread up, in case it hasn't been mentioned.

GravatarRexroth's Daughter, I agree... I don't use to overhead lights at all.

My office is full of lamps with full spectrum bulbs. It's the best I can do.

Gravataryou might was well be in a sensory deprivation tank.

Not unlike certain public servants, who shall remain nameless but cursed in this thread.

GravatarLJ, I, umm, agree with your comments on the colors. I'd suggest color-coordination on the locks, though.

GravatarFLG, you're in academia? You know being pissed off is in the job description.

I'll say. It's always the administrators that drive you crazy.

Our problem is too many people, too many students, very old building. It sucks ass.

GravatarCats are cute, but check out Nudibranch blogging - they are truly beautiful creatures:

Just read about Bob Cats. Seems thier making a major come back, and out perform coyotes in suburban sprawl.

One of thier favorite prey in that setting, House Cats!

But I'd love to see one.

Heard a mountain Lion once. Camping in the Sandias, wait, I think I aready told that story.

Yes, being pissed off is in the job description in academia. That's why having windows and sunlight is so important. It's a good balance to the whole toxic atmosphere that permeates campus administration.
I know a couple of people who moved off campus at UC Santa Cruz, and they loved it. They were in town, and away from the ongoing madness.

GravatarFour legs good,

I'm interested in hearing about the watergate symposium. You were saying....?

GravatarI mean the musical instrument but I remember the late "Hannah" going nuts when the radio played a piece for clock organ. She had one of the worst attitutdes I've ever seen on a cat. Orange and white, foundling.

GravatarBGK, most elegant felines.

I think I might have seen one of them in the original The Time Machine - or maybe Star Wars...

GravatarBGK, OMG is that a devil cat?

holy moly!!

DON'T STOP, DAMNIT!!!

GravatarAgave--
It's true, bobcats are making a comeback. But mostly housecats are vulnerable to coyotes, who also prey on bobcats.
I've never seen a mountain lion, but they definitely roam the hills around Santa Cruz, and there have been kills of deer on campus.
There is something very evocative about seeing wild cats-- We often see prey (deer, rabbits, squirrels), but predators are very shy and mysterious.

Gravatarfoundling

Yeah, forgot about that word, getting OldTimers already, I guess.
That's our LC.

GravatarPhil, just incredible.

Rexroth's Daughter

So true.

So, I'll briefly tell my story.
Camping in the Sandia's, the mountains you see in Albuqueque.
All by myself, nobody around for miles.
I'm spacing out standing there staring into the darknes, when I hear, KAWROWOUUU. Close and loud.
I back slowly up to the camp fire, and hear it again, but thankfully farther away. Heard it again way up on a ridge.
Gives me goose bumps just typing about it.

.

GravatarNudibranchs RULE.

And LJ, good luck with the blog.

GravatarAnd LJ, good luck with the blog.

It has the same birthday as me. Very auspicious.

GravatarOkay portia, I was trying to figure out where everyone was.

Basically they had two panels today- the first was Bob Woodward, Richard Ben-Veniste, Richard Reeves, John Taylor, and Stanley Kutler.- this one was about Nixon himself. I missed most of it because I was having a lunch meeting with a reporter talking about smalfish's problems.

The second one that I did attend had Carl Bernstein, Anthony Lewis, David Greenberg and Bob Schieffer. The topic was the press and the first amendment.

Bernstein started out by making a statement about Watergate, how he thought what it was really about was how an aberrant president engaged in a criminal conspiracy to undermine a presidential election.. And that Watergate never was have been revealed if they hadn't been able to give guarantees of confidentiality to their informants.

The really interesting part was when Tony Lewis spoke. He said, "I'm going to take a different tack." Then he went off on a rant about how Bush was so much worse than Nixon and listed everything chimpy had done wrong, including lying about WMDs, breaking american law by disregarding the geneva conventions and the conventions against torture..... and on and on and on.

He said (I'm paraphrasing), "When it comes to criminality, compared to GW Bush, Nixon was an amateur." He got an enormous ovation at the end of it, though there were a number of rethugs there who were shaking their heads "No!!! oh no, not my chimpy!!"

GravatarFriday Nudibranch Blogging in the house, y'all.

I think you'll be amused by its presumption.

It's a naive domestic nudibranch, and it doesn't appear to *be* breeding... but nonetheless, I am highly amused.

GravatarAgave--
I have a very healthy fear of the big cats. I used to bike ride to campus everyday. I had to ride about a mile through a long winding meadow on the bike path. It was definitely in mountain lion country. I was always alert-- not that it would have saved me.
I bet that mountain lion sound will stay with you always. The best part of a good adventure.

GravatarFLG, that sounds like it was inspiring. Did the rest of the panel react?

GravatarIt has the same birthday as me. Very auspicious.

June 7? Funny, I didn't even notice the date, really. That's my wingnut brother's birthday, too. Damn. I might have to delete that first post, just to erase the bad karma he'd bring to anything...

GravatarPhilalethes,

Exquisite looking. How large is that creature?

GravatarRexroth's Daughter

What's that park in CA where a biker was killed and another hurt my a Big Cat?

Saw it on National Geo.

A park that a development had come up against, and became a favorite mountain biking place.

.

Gravatar4LG--
I think Bush makes Nixon look like an amateur thug, which he was. I can't wait to see what will finally be Bush's undoing. It's got to be something, doesn't it? These deeds won't go unpunished, will they? That would be so unjust. I just hope I live long enough.

GravatarDamn, almost no-one cool has the same birthday as me. I think Thurman Munson and Prince are the best I can do.

Maybe Liam Neeson, but he kinda bores me (almost made a freudian typo: "Laim Neeson").

GravatarThere is indeed a new thread, but Blogger is playing its coy www/not-www games again.

GravatarThing is, Nixon was dishonest, paranoid, secretive, and generally amoral and sleazy, but he was intelligent and competent, and actually did some positive things. As opposed to putting his foot on the handbasket accelerator.

GravatarFirst there is a new thread, then there is no new thread, then there is...

(I know, I know, bad form, but it just has so many uses)

GravatarFLG, that sounds like it was inspiring. Did the rest of the panel react?

They all agreed. And it was inspiring. I irritated the crap out of the bald winger in front of me by yelling, "Hear! hear!!"

Ya know, sometimes I actually believe democracy lives.

When they took questions some idiot asked Shieffer about Rathergate.

Then Bernstein told the story about how they'd been publishing the stories in the Post for a couple of months and still no one believed them.... then CBS news and Cronkite ran 15 minutes one night and 7 the next summarizing the entire mess. And that gave the story legitimacy.

Bernstein asked Schieffer if he thought CBS would ever do that on Abu Ghraib- and he said, yes, he thought the would.

Bernstein said, "oh really? we'll hold you to that."

Tony Lewis also said he thought that the torture stuff went all the way to the top. All the way.

Let's see, what else? they talked about what the problem with the media was- Bernstein said he thought that most people aren't looking for information, they're looking for validation of what they already believe.

GravatarI didn't even notice the date, really. That's my wingnut brother's birthday, too. Damn. I might have to delete that first post

Just go into edit posts and change the time stamp.

GravatarPersonally, I find Liam Neeson rather cool.

Here are some others from that day, Eli:

07-Jun-1848 Paul Gauguin - Hey, he was cool!
07-Jun-1909 Jessica Tandy - Great actress
07-Jun-1917 Dean Martin - Ugh
07-Jun-1940 Tom Jones - Ugh
07-Jun-1946 Jenny Jones - VERY UGH
07-Jun-1952 Liam Neeson - Kinda cool
07-Jun-1958 Prince - Um... He has his moments?
07-Jun-1972 Karl Urban - Mmmmm. Eomer...
07-Jun-1975 Allen Iverson - Well...
07-Jun-1981 Anna Kournikova - BIMBO
07-Jun-1981 Larisa Oleynik - Who?

GravatarTheri:

Thanks, my friend. I forgot about that. See how little I do that blogging thing?

GravatarAgave--
The park was down in southern california in Orange County, a few miles east of Irvine. They were on a bike trail when the cat pulled the front rider off of her bike. The cat had already killed another biker, who had stopped to fix his bike chain. It was quite a story. Certainly made me think twice about riding my bike on a trail that had posted at its entrance: "you are entering mountain lion habitat." I rode anyway, but not without thinking about it.

GravatarBerstein's a fairly observant dude, then. Of course, he's validating my opinion...

GravatarNow you know the magnitude and nature of my pain, LJ.

GravatarThing is, Nixon was dishonest, paranoid, secretive, and generally amoral and sleazy, but he was intelligent and competent, and actually did some positive things.

Both Schieffer and Bernstein told a bunch of stories about how nixon really went after the press, and especially dan rather.

Apparently Nixon goons went after Bill Paley and threatened him. Paley, to his great credit, never told the newsroom guys that the WH was trying to pressure them.

Those were the days, I guess.

Gravatar(I do like Jessica Tandy... *and* Tom Jones - but maybe not together)

GravatarPaul Gauguin was born on June 7.

Dorothy Parker AND Henry Miller died on June 7.

GravatarBerstein's a fairly observant dude, then. Of course, he's validating my opinion...

Hee hee. But he is though. I talked about the idiot culture that's drowning everything out.

He said good journalism is still being done, but people aren't listening, or it gets drowned out by the o'liellys of the world.

Gravatarflg,

Thanks for sharing that info. I agree with Rexroth's Daughter. Bush is worse than Nixon. and the comparisons between the two are unavoidable, especially during the election campaign.

The biggest difference between Bush and Nixon is that Bush has the press in his pocket, as willing participants in spinning his agenda. Nixon didn't trust the press. Bush does, and with good reason.

GravatarHey hey HEY, no dissin' on Tom Jones. He just kinda got shitty songs -- but those lungs are hard to top.

GravatarDorothy Parker AND Henry Miller died on June 7.

You're really not helping...

GravatarThey all agreed

Even Bob "thanks for giving my brother the ambassadorship" Schieffer?

GravatarHe said good journalism is still being done, but people aren't listening, or it gets drowned out by the o'liellys of the world.

*cough cough Hersh cough cough cough*

GravatarYou're really not helping...

No, s'pose not, but it could be kind of a darkly interesting cocktail-conversational point.

GravatarHey hey HEY, no dissin' on Tom Jones. He just kinda got shitty songs -- but those lungs are hard to top.

And to put 2 of them together, he did a great cover of Prince's "Kiss" with Art of Noise!

GravatarEli, Sy Hersch's name came up several times.

Schieffer said politicians are so managed up these days and "on message" that he wants to jump over the desk on Face The Nation and throttle them.

Oh, best quote of the day. Tony Lewis, when the conversation turned to "why don't amuricanns want to hear the truth" said he had to quote Bertold Brecht from right after the failed revolt in eastern germany.

He said, "We have to get a new people."

GravatarNjbrad,

Very small. Less than an inch, I believe.

GravatarWell, Eli, you could have February 3. What a horrid day.

03-Feb-1811 Horace Greeley - Yeah, we all remember him.
03-Feb-1874 Gertrude Stein - Thanks for the brownies, Alice.
03-Feb-1894 Norman Rockwell - Had his moments, but usually schlocky.
03-Feb-1907 James Michener - Even longer-winded a writer than yours truly.
03-Feb-1918 Joey Bishop - Half-ass comedian
03-Feb-1926 Shelley Berman - Um....
03-Feb-1940 Fran Tarkenton - Decent QB
03-Feb-1947 Dave Davies - Yeah, we all know how much he contributed to the Kinks.
03-Feb-1950 Morgan Fairchild - I know the guys like her, but she couldn't act her way out of a paper bag.

GravatarEli - Bob Dylan is a gemini.

ok, i think i'm actually drunk enough to sign off with this:

the door opens, and a blast of chill air refreshed the apartment room. two lithe, tall figures regard each other, eyes brown and blue, hair fair and dark. a spirit of contention and challenge fills the air...

dark skin on light, softly melding in the fading afternoon. warmth, hot breath, dancing sparks of intellect and desire. who will take the lead? and slowly, one pulls out the tools of pleasure, knowing the evening long, cold and lonely.

"what do you want? from me? for yourself?" one asks the other.

"only your joy, to hear your cries of passion as my flesh and yours embrace in the dance of eternity. to know that intimacy is defined by our embrace..."

heavy breath. closed curtains. the soft beat of nameless music and smoking incense. a griding pulse that engulfs two lovers, the pacific beat which knows no space or time.

"you are....so beautiful. your skin is like silk. touch me, kiss me, feel me," she says.

"ah." some time passes without words or thoughts. a hand, a lilt, a sigh. the rhythm of the earth and ocean and heaven await them, they dance in union and bliss.

later...over smoking coals and wafting herb..."so, what do you do for a living?" satisfied eyes look up to their measure, fingers embrace in close touch.

"i'm a writer for the bush campaign."

the skies open, a thousand tears come pouring down. the fair haired denzien of the lover's nest recoils, her every oriface closing in storied fear and cold.

"it's time for me to go, hon. so sorry to have wasted your time...."

i wish i were kidding.

This, to me is so astonishingly obvious that I can't believe anyone would think otherwise. Folks, your troops only do what they are told to do or what they have been led to believe they can get away with. This is a Failure of Leadership. Or just plain evil.

And I think Deep Throat was James Jesus Angleton. Maybe.

I would imagine so... Tony Lewis = Anthony Lewis, the former NYT columnist, right?

Well, Eli, you could have February 3. What a horrid day.

GravatarThat remark surprised me. I thought Bob S was a on board with bushco.

Me too. I really think it's more that he's an old time gentleman.

He's just too well mannered to bitch slap chimpy like he really needs to be bitch slapped.

It will be interesting to see what happens when he takes over for Rather. If he does do 15 minutes on Abu Ghraib.

smalfish, email me with the name of the reporter that interviewed you. I may have some info for you.

Whatever you do, DO NOT GO TO THAT MEETING MONDAY WITHOUT A LAWYER. That's exactly what that asshole is hoping you will do. There's a racket here and you're just one of the latest victims. More later, I'm just so fucking tired tonight.

GravatarOh, and chicago dyke, I'm sorry about the crappy date. :-(

I'M KIDDING NOW! That was sad and sweet. And sad.

Rather liked that one. Also remember an interesting song I've managed to lose (it was on cassette) called "A Little Somethin' For Your Head."

CD: Well, THAT sucks. Okay, well, it sucked beautifully the way you wrote it, but it still sucks. Come back for hugs tomorrow.

Gravatarchicagodyke, I am really sorry. But, have you considered writing romance novels? I dont read them, but that is good stuff.

Gravatarschieffer's brother is a long-time bush friend/enabler/supporter. his payoff was ambassadorship to poland (not sure if he's still there).

Now that's hilarious!

I have a question for ya Mary. Do you ever worry about Thers turning your kids into little smart aleks?

Gravatar4legs,
Do you ever worry about Thers turning your kids into little smart aleks?

Nah, it's a joint project.

Seriously, we're raising kids who think critically, read, and ask questions. They'll rule the next generation, trust me.

GravatarI never understood "What's New Pussycat?" until I realized it's a pickup routine in a bar.

GravatarI saw Mars Attacks!! a couple of weeks ago on HBO and I've been walking around going ACK! AcK!! ever since.

Well, she's like a lot of Americans who have NO interest in the world beyond their job and friends and perhaps a sports team... I shake my head in despair and can't help but think of Jews For Hitler-type groups... but I keep trying to show her other voices, because she isn't a bad person, just ill-informed.

What does she have to say about all the anti-gay marriage stuff? I'm curious how she can rationalize that.

GravatarWhat a beautiful cat!

That's a noble profile.

GravatarI played a BBC sound effects record of cat noises for my cat once. The sound that got her the most excited to where she was looking for the cat was the sound of a cat eating kitty crunchies. Also, she really hates high whistling sounds like flutes and harmonica music.

Gravatargeor3ge! Haven't seen you in ages.

Busy as hell, broke as fuck, and only online when I have serious emailing to do, but I lurk from time to time. Stay well.

If you see Backslider, ask him if he knows any good bassists in Charleston.

Gravatardamn feline media. i want a Friday Dog Blogging section to counter-act the biased mainstream feline media.

GravatarAlso, she really hates high whistling sounds like flutes and harmonica music.

Years ago, I had a flute player over to the house to rehearse. My cat was enthralled when she started playing. Came right up on her lap.
