WQXR just previewed tomorrow's op-ed page. Apparently Kristof says, after some blah blah about Bush's SS plan, that "the Democrats, however, have no plan of their own." Don't trust me, read the piece tomorrow, but my first thought was: why do we need a counterplan to fix something that really isn't all that broken? The great silence by left-leaning Western feminists, and other large parts of the left, to human rights abuses carried out in the name of Islam is, to see it as its kindest, caused by an overdeveloped sense of tolerance or cultural relativism. But it is also part of the new anti-Americanism. Look at American Christian fundamentalism, they say.
Dislike of George Bush's foreign policy has led to an automatic support of those perceived to be his enemies. Paradoxically, this leaves the left defending people who hold beliefs that condone what the left has long fought against: misogyny, homophobia, capital punishment, suppression of freedom of speech. The recent reaffirmation by Iran's Ayatollah Khamenei of the fatwa against Salman Rushdie has been met by virtual silence; as has the torture and murder in Iraq of a man who would be presumed to be one of the left's own - Hadi Salih, the international officer of the Iraqi Federation of Trade Unions. The hard left these days is soft on fascism, or at least Islamofascism.
The religious right in America would, if it could, wind back access to abortion and some other women's rights. But as far as I am aware, no Christian fundamentalist in the US has suggested banning women from driving cars, or travelling without their husbands' permission, or forcing them to cover their faces. Contrary to popular opinion, one is not the same as the other.

Lumberg certainly has a better record as a manager. At least nobody gets killed. And they probably get some actual work done that gets money made for the company.
I think Bush's analogue just might be David Brent from The Office. Gets caught lying to his boss on numerous occasions, somehow gets away with it. Makes a normal person want to chew his own head off just to get away from him. Et cetera.

Democracynow.org is speaking with a medical doctor from Harvard U. She is talking about how even the best of healthcare plans often require serious out-of-pocket money for rehab and other limitations that the Insurance Companies put in all their policies.
Dr. Woolhandler is the speaker and she is endorsing Kennedy's healthcare proposal as a good first step toward alleviating some of these problems.
Americans have no idea how vulnerable they are to bankruptcy due to medical costs, and how much Bushboy & the Goopers are doing everything they can to prevent them from getting affordable healthcare.

If it is true that the left now supports the oppression of women, then it has improved much since the days when those horrid Pankhurst women were agitating for sufferage.
There is progress at last!!! Liberals support taking drivers licenses away from women!!! Marvelous. Taking the franchise away!!! Even better. Putting them in binding garments and subjecting them to Biblical rule. Your socialists are far superior to ours.
But if this is in fact true, then wouldn't it be possible for women to pretend that they are gay men? Since the left seems to be excessive in its support of rights for homosexuals, any enterprising lady would simply dress in man's clothing and pretend to be an effeminate male.
Ah. It is so very difficult to construct a straw man, almost as difficult as building an empire.

Healthcare is a disaster thanks to the greed of the Insurance company execs which is what Bushboy caters to. A single payer healthcare system would save $300 billion/year in costs alone!

Stupid Americans. Wall Street needs this plan. SS "reform" will provide them with a annuity stream. Americans believe it is their god given right to retire rich. Everybody gets to be an effortless millionaire. Your house, the stock market, beanie babies - all guaranteed to go up double digits while longterm growth rate of the economy is one fifth of that. Americans were never good at math.
Democrats need to get smart. Where is the Senator holding a chart showing the Dow Close at the top in 1929 and when the market got back to the top in 1954. 25 years of nothing.
Or how about the last day of 1961 and the last day of 1981- the Dow closed those years with almost the same exact number. 20 yrs of nothing. Only sheeple buy and hold stocks forever. If you were on the verge of 40 when either one of those secular bears began you were fucked if you depended on the stock market for retirement.

President Bush spoke at great length about Social Security reform on Wednesday — but all anybody wants to talk about is The Hug. The president sent a clear message to the potentates of the Middle East that they need to start thinking about liberty — but all that seems to have paled next to The Hug.
The Hug is now one of the indelible images of the young century. It crystallized the feelings of respect, gratitude and the understanding of American sacrifice on the part of the Iraqis who themselves braved death at the hands of evil terrorists to help bring about a new future.
And it represented the sense among so many military families that their sacrifices — even the unendurable loss of a beloved family member — were not and are not in vain.
The success of the Iraqi elections is not just geostrategically important. It has also provided a salutary antidote to the assault on national pride that has been staged by those who believe the war in Iraq was unnecessary and meaningless.
It had become common for many on the Left to cry crocodile tears for the dead and injured, to use those deaths and injuries as an ideological weapon against the merits and justifications for the war.
But the tears we saw shed on Wednesday night, and the tears we shed ourselves while watching, were the real thing. Sgt. Norwood and all those who have served and are still serving in Iraq have made the world a better place. All glory properly goes to them at a moment of genuine triumph.

No, King Leopold, the plan is to rig out a fleet of mobile abortion mills. As you know, we liberals support Winnebagos of Mass Destruction.
Ah. Liberals would deny women the right to drive but deliver abortion clinics to them.
Thank you. That clarifies it.
Will these liberals allow women (whom they wish to see swathed in Islamic garments) to remove their Islamic garments in order to have homosexual sex or abortions?
One would think that it would be necessary to remove one's burka to kill one's child. Surely even American liberals see that?

I like what alias said. That could be the basis for a great ad:
show clip of Bush promising not to touch SS in the 2000 campaign.
"But as soon as he got into office, he broke the lock on the lockbox"
show graphic of Bush deficits, with legend that Bush is spending the funds he promised not to touch, some voiceover talking about his spending
"Now, like every other time in his life, Bush is asking everyone else to foot the bill after he ran the operation into the ground. Under his plan, your social security benefits will be cut in half. Not only that, but Bush wants to go another $2 trillion (or whatever) into debt to create a plan that only delivers half of the benefits you've been paying for your entire working life - that's money you'll have to pay back in the form of higher taxes or reduced government services.
The Bush Plan: Pay more, get less."

...and the tears we shed ourselves while watching ...
But I will shed even more tears when I finally realize how I have been suckered by Republicans for years and years and years. One day, the cobwebs will clear from my skull and I will realize that I am just another member of the Republican proletariat. How will I know this? I will be shaken to the core when I am invited to the home of the richest Republican in town, only to realize upon arrival in my Sunday best that my wife and I have been invited pick the trash out of the croquet field long after the last guest has departed. My wife will turn to me, her face screwed tight with rage, and shriek, "You said we'd be rich! You said we'd be one of them!" At that point, I'll have to admit that I am -- and always was -- and always will be -- their servant.

This Joe Scarborough fellow is quite brilliant on the traitorous ideologue Churchill and the infestation of America's universities by subversive college professors.
Public institutions of higher learning like the University of Colorodo should be shut down. The common people have no need for education or ideology that we do not approve of.
But I fear that this Churchill monster is going to become wealthy and famous because of this righteous criticism of him. Before this started, I had never heard of him. When I read his writings, they seemed poorly constructed and emotional. And yet now he is a constant presence on my television box.

What media? You mean GE(NBC), NEWSCORP(FOX), Viacom(CBS), Disney(ABC) - or Gannett(pick a couple hundred newspapers) - the only enterprise journalism being done by publicly traded corps are NYT, Wash Post, and WSJ. Two of those three are being squeezed by the cost of maintaining a quality newsroom - the Washington Post now makes most of its money from its education division.
Don't you think GE, Viacom, Disney, Newscorp, Gannett, Tribune Co. et al wouldn't mind having their stock pumped by a guaranteed cash inflow from privatization accounts?
