Sorry, but I wouldn't want Goldberg and a rifle, together, anywhere near me. He'd be a danger to himself, to his unit, as well as to any passing civilian or the enemy. Besides, I think the Army and Marines try to weed out the psychos: nobody wants a sadist on board.
Besides, I hear you have to have a high-school degree.

Damn! Atrios is whippin' them out!
I know some 50-year-olds who are going to the Sunni triangle in the next few weeks. Wife and children aren't exactly a good reason as compared to some.
However, I tend to agree with the basic premise. Unless there's a better reason than I've seen, taking a father away from a child is not a good thing. Of course the problems is that this applies to all the fathers over there. On both sides. Or all sides...

Well, I kinda think the hawk pundits should be in their own unit and sent on cannon-fodder hopeless suicide missions so they don't get any of our other troops killed. After all, anyone who *wanted* the war, should get to go ahead of someone who just joined up so they could get some education, right?

My cousin in the Minnesota National Guard is currently away from his wife and two daughters. He is protecting "an embassy" in Baghdad.
His wife is working three jobs. They have move out of their house and into a trailer. (She has turned down offers from family to move in with them)
When he got out of the Army in 1999, he signed with Guard to help his home state. He figured that he would be filling sandbags on the banks of the Mississippi.
He did not figure he would be playing policeman in Baghdad. The only "kill zone" that he knows is the one in which he is standing.

Sorry to go OT, but my head is exploding. Just read this at southknoxbubba.com
God have mercy.
...get tough on those having a tough go of it:
WASHINGTON - President Bush's budget will propose slashing grants to local law enforcement agencies and cutting spending for environmental protection, American Indian schools and home-heating aid for the poor, The Associated Press learned Saturday.
Bush molded the roughly $2.5 trillion spending plan for 2006 as a response to a string of record federal deficits, and is sends it to Congress on Monday.
The budget, the toughest he has written since entering the White House four years ago, seeks about half the increase for school districts in low-income communities he requested last year and a slight reduction for the National Park Service.Of course, the Pentagon gets 4.8% raise for their fine performance of late. Apparently the EPA hasn't been doing such a good job destroying things, so they get a 6% cut, not to mention a 3% cut for the National Park Service.
Oh, and I guess he can cut funding for law enforcement and coordination between agencies, because John Ashcroft advised in his letter of resignation that America is now safe from terrorism.
But, hey. We gotta come up with that $2 TRILLION it will take to fund the handouts to Wall Street, er, privatization of Social Security somewhere.
And excuse me, but a $2.5 TRILLION dollar budget proposal? Those tax-cut-and-borrow-and-spend Republicans are killing us.
OK, then.

isn't in the kill zone
Wotta dork. Notice how the Republicans argue:
He says, "lots of people think this is a searingly pertinent point," without giving an answer as to why it's not a pertinent point-
and by throwing that modifier "searingly" in there, he invites the audience to assume that anyone who wonders why hysterically ardent supporters of the war aren't joining the military themselves is exagerrating.
He offers a few facts about himself, without making the first bit of effort to explain why those facts are reasons that he shouldn't be expected to join, and he thinks he can get away with saying that they don't "ever seem to suffice." Well, duh.
He tries to make it seem as if the answers to our questions are obviously implicit to his little bit of smokescreen- a few sentences which don't themselves say anything much at all.
What he's really saying is that he just doesn't want to go to "the kill zone," but he pulls off a lot of distortion to make it seem like there's actually some reason that has more weight. But he can't produce it, because there isn't any.

Think of how you'd argue the point with the guy rationally, not emotionally, if you met him face to face.

If you have no prior military experience and are over the age of 34, you can't currently enlist in any branch of the Armed Services.
The guys you are reading about who are over 34 are either career military or are Reserve/Guard guys whose initial military enlistment came when they were younger.
There was no need for this guy to talk about his kids. His age disqualifies him, unless he previously served.
They don't really want 35 year old guys out on the obstacle course in basic.

Speaking of Jonah enlisting, here is something I already posted on another thread. It is a TRUE STORY:
During the months of the propaganda assault that took place to manipulate and to lead the United States into war with Iraq, I remember reading a syndicated Goldberg column in which Jonah, advocated attacking Iraq.
At the time, I did not believe Bush about any of the reasons why Iraq supposedly needed to be attacked. And I was adamantly against any war with Iraq because I knew that a whole lot of people were going to be killed unnecessarily.
In a moment of inspiration and anger, I e-mailed Goldberg with something along the lines of the following message:
"Since you advocate so much for a war with Iraq, are planning on signing up to fight in it?"
I sent it off to him, and much to my surprise, he e-mailed me back.
His message went something like this:
"What a stupid point you make . . . to suggest that unless one fights in a war, one cannot advocate for it."
I replied:
"I suggested no such thing and you are distorting my meaning. What I am getting at is that in view of the fact that you advocate for this war so much, are you willing to put your own ass on the line and go sign up to go fight it?"
He replied again:
"I'll sign up to go into the military to fight if and when my country asks me to do so."
To which I replied:
"How dishonest of you. Your country has ALREADY asked you to join the military, and
does so everytime it runs a military recruiting ad on television."
Needless to say, he did not respond to this last message I sent him.

I'm sorry my father returned to service during the Korean War with a wife and two sons under 3 yrs. If you believe in this war, go sign up. My uncle died fighting in WWII, I saw what it did to my grandmother, and at least she knew the sacrifice was for a just cause.

As for Sweet Jonah being over 35, well, certain skills, like nurses, are eligible up to the age of 40.
Furthermore, there were many over-40s who volunteered -- and were accepted as volunteers -- in WWII. Many were accepted as officers, but we could have our own Lincoln Brigade full of guys like Sweet Jonah, giving the anti-US forces what for.
As for his wife...heck, she can join, too! Sweet Jonah's readers are all for family values! I'm sure one of them can keep his kid while hubby and wife are out protecting America.
I just think Sweet Jonah hasn't protested enough. I think that if Sweet Jonah wants in the armed forces bad enough, he can find a way to get in, even if he has to lie.

Actually, "you can't advocate a war unless you fight in it" is EXACTLY what you are saying. It goes well beyond implication. There's really no room to doubt that this is your point.

You can support a war without going. But, when you question the integrity and patriotism of those who aren't suffciiently enthusiastic about the war, and impugn the motives of all critics, screeching about "national security" and then your little war goes badly and military recruiting goals aren't met and the national guard gets depleted, I'd say at the very least you should be doing a bit of soulsearching about the whole enlistment idea. What will you fight for then?
That is a question that has been circling my mind for a while now. I think I have the answer now. I will fight for America. Not the America that fights undeclared wars against an ill-prepared foe based on ideology rather than facts. Not for an America that will destroy the lives of anyone over the age of 53. Not for an America that specializes in hate and eschews the considerations of half of its population. Not for an America that actively discriminates against its own population. Not for an America that believes that we are always right: no matter how wrong we prove ourselves to be.
But I will fight for an America that will stand as a beacon on the hill for freedom and democracy. I will fight for a country that believes that those who work the hardest, will succeed the most. I will fight for an America treats its friends with respect and its enemies with honor. I will fight for an America that will treat its least citizens with honor and respect. I will fight for an America that fulfills its obligations to those promised.
I am so sick of these asshats that I am ready. If the Republicans try to disenfranchise people who do not believe as they do; then they want to see nuclear - let’s bring it on. I am ready to fight for my retirement. I am ready to lay waste to anyone who would counter the vision of America. How about you?

There was no need for this guy to talk about his kids. His age disqualifies him, unless he previously served.
That might be relevant had this war not started while Jonah was younger than 35 and eligible to enlist.

Or, hey, at the very least NRO can send him over to be an embedded reporter for a few weeks so he can report on the latest school opening

Yes, Atrios, he could in fact be an embedded reporter.
What he CAN'T do is enlist.
If a 35 year old guy with no previous military experience walks down to a recruiting station Monday morning, they will turn him away. He will not be allowed to enlist.
This entire entry is only redeemed by the fact that it doesn't look like Jonah knows that he flat-out isn't eligible, and is trying to justify his lack of service on other grounds [i.e. family obligations and economic hardship]. That tends to imply that he wouldn't consider enlisting even if he were eligible. Which he's not.

Actually, "you can't advocate a war unless you fight in it" is EXACTLY what you are saying. It goes well beyond implication. There's really no room to doubt that this is your point.
--Not quite. Goldberg set up a straw man by subtley distorting the whole thrust of what I was saying. Goldberg's straw man would make me attack, for example, crippled citizens who might think that a particular war is a good idea, but because of their physical handicap, can't go fight in battle. I was not saying that you can't advocate for a war unless you fight in it yourself.
--What I was saying was that assuming that you are able-bodied and in all ways qualified, you can't advocate for a war unless you are willing and ready to fight in it yourself.
--What I was really saying is, "Jonah, how much do you really believe your own propaganda about Iraq being a threat to us? If you really believe it so much, then why aren't you signing up to go fight in this war to protect your family and your homeland from this imminent threat you say Saddam presents?"
--Jonah understood what I was saying quite well.
--He's a lying little weasel of a shit. And his disengenuous come-back about his own country first asking him to fight before he joins (I suppose he meant a draft), just underscores that fact.

He could sign up to be a civilian contractor in Iraq - maybe a truck driver. That would let him earn good money to send back to his apparently near-destitute family.

OT: I´m in Chile. Watching TV, they have the FOX entertainment channel. CNN International has the Daily Show with a prior disclaimer that the news is not factual; actually, this is a good idea - they should have it for all American news broadcasts. Rotated watching the State of the Union broadcast between BBC & CNN. The people the BBC had on were much more critical whereas CNN´s coverage was all fluff.

Wondering if anyone has opinions about the Ward Churchill flap. Was flipping channels, and faux news had his attorney on.
Diogenes
Pretty transparent attempt by the repub noise machine to discredit mainstream progressives by association. Churchill may inluence people, but he doesn't make many friends. The book is 2 years old, so the question is "why now?" My answer: the Social Security fight. Just another way to distract the "American Idol idiots" from the facts by substituting a pop culture brouhaha, ala swiffer boat vets.

THE BANKERS AND THE DIPLOMATS
(Malvina Reynolds)
INTRO
Last night, I had the strangest dream,
I saw a big parade, with ticker-tape galore,
And men were marching there the like
I'd never seen before:
1. Oh, the bankers and the diplomats are going in the army:
Oh, happy day, I'd spend my pay to see them on parade,
Their paunches at attention and their stri-ped pants at ease -
They've gotten patriotic and they're going overseas.
We'll have to do the best we can and bravely carry on,
So we'll just keep the laddies here to manage while they're gone.
chorus: Oh, we hate to see them go!
The gentlemen of distinction in the army!
2. The bankers and the diplomats are going in the army
It seems a shame to keep them from the wars they love to plan,
We're all of us contented that they'll fight a dandy war -
They don't need propaganda they know what they're fighting for
They'll march away with dignity and in the best of form,
And we'll just keep the laddies [young folk] here
To keep [each other] the lassies warm.
3. The bankers and the diplomats are going in the army:
We'll have to make things easy, 'cause it's all so new and strange,
We'll give them silver shovels when they have to dig a hole,
And they can sing in harmony while answering the roll,
They'll eat their old K-rations from a hand-embroidered box,
And when they die, we'll bring 'em home and bury 'em in Fort Knox!

Jonah Goldberg, sorry-ass piece of crap, wants to fight wars from his keyboard. He's OK with fighting and dying for the good ole US of A - as long as he's not the one doing the fighting and dying.
