Speaking of CPAC (From Daily Kos):
"A mole at the CPAC conference reports in:
"Today, while teaching an Internet Activist Seminar, Mike Krempasky told his conservative youngens, 'Daily Kos is a site built by the hard-left. There is no doubt, they are effective - they are freighteningly effective...It's probably bigger than the Washington Times right now.'
"He was less sparing about Atrios:
"'Atrios is a raging left-wing blogger. He actually hates America. He hates apple pie, he even hates his own mother.'"
I will go on record as saying I hate apple pie but love cherry, I have issues with my mother but don't hate her . . . and I hate what our counrty has become, but love the idea that we can make it better.

Note: Lies are made true (in the consensual reality) by repetition. To my knowledge the only person on the liberal/progressive/left who has gotten this is our favorite Mr. Aravosis--- he has repeated the message about hypocrisy over and over and over. Obscenity
For all of the world you would think the moralists in charge of our government actually care about issues such as obscenity. To listen to them as they rail incessantly about easily accessible pornographic pictures on the internets, the sinners in Hollywood, and the general moral decay of the homosexual community you would think they actually care.
To me, there is nothing more obscene than poverty, hunger, and a general lack of opportunities in our society. It is odd to find the triggers that ignite my disgust. Often, I have no idea of where this contempt arises: this time is different; I know exactly where it came from. Watching TV last night with Mrs. DWD there was an advertisement for a brokerage firm. It featured a lovely woman steering a large sailing yacht in fog and dangerous waters. While attractive on the surface, the underlying messages are most troubling.
First of all, a yacht this size is close to a million dollars. That is an immense sum: even an obscene sum., to spend for something that gives pleasure to so few. Where is the virtue in monopolizing so much of the world’s resources? I am teacher and my children are very poor: very poor. They suffer from the usual lack of everything. We have a mobile dentist who comes to the school and this is the only time my children see a dentist. We often provide clothes for those who cannot afford them (most of them) winter coats and feed them lunch. But this pretty lady can go sailing on her million dollar yacht without feeling guilty. Amazing.
The second conclusion is that if you are thin and pretty, then these things are your right and this company will help you claim what is yours by steering your investments. The families whose students I teach have no investments: they have bills. One of the most common dinners for my students is sugar rice. Never heard of it? Simply, a couple of cups of rice with sugar on it. Cheap and filling - who cares if it is not nutritious, these are poor people and matter little. We have to keep the world safe for the pretty lady and her yacht. That is obscene.
Poverty is obscene. Ostentation is obscene. Celebrating either is beneath contempt, yet we do it every day. We blame poor people for being poor, while forcing them into situations where it is amazing they are doing as well as they are. Cutting aid to the poor, cutting medical services, cutting wages at the low end: all of these give us the pretty lady with yacht. That is obscene.

For Watertiger who graced the blog with her picture last night, "Nearing fifty-five scared the hell out of the man. Old enough to die. He knew this absolutely as he read the obituaries every evening and it was there in black and white. The fact that he knew few of these people did nothing to change the fact that people his own age, and younger, were dying. . . The fact that he was nearly old enough to be the father of all that he found attractive caused him much consternation. And when he considered that he was old enough to be the grandfather of some of them: nothing he had ever learned had prepared him to become his grandfather!"
FDA says, "No!" But I would think that having a photo of Mann Coulter plastered prominently near your computer, in the bedroom, etc. would act quite nicely as a Cox-2 inhibitor.

OT, but how many of these "green millionaires" are driving gas-guzzling SUVs? Just curious:
Millionaires' Green Mansions
Forbes.com
By Sara Clemence
These days, it's a lot easier being green.
Solar power is cheaper than ever for homes, American families are using geothermal heating and cooling systems, and efficient wind turbines make it a breeze to generate electricity without using polluting fossil fuels.
...[S]tate and federal incentives can help home owners install renewable energy sources or implement energy-efficient strategies in their houses.
But some high-end home owners are shifting to innovative energy practices--and not for financial or environmental reasons.
"Some of our high-end clients literally never see their energy bills," says Steven J. Strong, founder and president of Solar Design Associates in Harvard, Mass. "They are basically putting a higher value on having more control over their energy destiny. This is a hedge against uncertainty."
Chris Cox is my Congressman. I'm always in the 26 percent that votes against him. He used to be a quiet, reasonable unassuming right wing ideologue. Lately he's gone round the bend. Tsk.

Well, for what it's worth, the Gannon story is unstoppable now. I knew it when I saw Leslie Stahl on Bill Maher's show last night, talking about how it's impossible that Gannon could have gotten around the background security check to gain access to the White House over and over and over again. It took the salacious aspect of the story to get it this far, but now it's gone too far to be put back in the bottle, since no one is relying any longer on Mistah Kurtz's failure to bother reviewing the evidence to decide what it's all about.
My main concern at this point is that it doesn't backfire; i.e. that when Gannon's sugar daddy is identified, that it's not turned into an excuse for the rightwing to say "see, this is why gays can't be trusted, they're too easy to blackmail" or whatever. Because I believe that this is where we're headed if we don't steer this thing very carefully.
Also I'm loving how the SCLM is trying to take credit for having found Gannon out...only to then have to backpedal and admit they "found Gannon out" by reading bloggers - who were doing the real investigation that reporters are supposed to do. Gotta love Jon Stewart for pointing this out.

I see this as the hand the WH is gonna play. "Oh, we didn't know they were gay; gee, if we'd only known this sort of thing was going on . . ." That's when people gotta come back with wanting to know how it all came about. This wouldn't have happened if it were a heterosexual situation? Bullshit. People like Chris Cox live in a fucking dream world, where Bush is a truthful, benevolent leader, and the source of all goodness in the world. The sad thing is that this isn't an especially isolated way at looking at the world. There are millions of ignorant suckers like Cox clogging every mall and main street in America.
And it's not like Cox doesn't have access to information, he's wilfully ignorant. People like him agressively ignore reality to keep their belief system propped up. Everybody wants to be slim, blonde, and rich, right? Everyone wants the American Dream, and, uh, make that 5500 square feet with solar panels, please. (It's the land consumption and material costs, including the energy to manufacture and transport the materials, that provide the worst hit from McMansions, not the energy costs of heating and cooling it.) And if I put $50 into my 401(k) every two weeks for 30 years, I might just afford a small boat when I retire, but by then I'll be too old to hoist the sail, much less afford all the sundries. And if my gun is used against me by a bad guy who breaks into my house, or my angry wife after she finds the blonde pictures on my computer, well, it's still mah raght under the 2nd Amendment to keep a gun, dang it all. After all, I'm an American! Quick quiz-
Which NYT columnist wrote the following:
Have we entered another world, where up is down and rationality is irrational?
If you guessed Krugman, you would be wrong. It is none other than David Brooks.
I don't actually recomend reading the column because it is typical of Brooks, one kernel of truth in an otherwise illogical tirade. This time he calls for generational war. What is funny is that while Brooks and the Right are trying to fan the flames of a generational war to end Social Security, anytime Democrats mention the fact that the tax cuts have only made the rich richer and the poor poorer is guilty of class warfare. Hypocrits.

Cox comes from the rich, white, right-wing enclave of Newport Beach, California, which in turn is located in Orange County. My understanding is that over the most recent years, even Orange County has been becoming more liberal and more Democratic. Apparently, this has not occurred in Newport Beach (where they named an airport, incidentally, after John Wayne.)
Growing up in Los Angeles, I never liked Newport Beach. It held no appeal for me.
Now, I have yet another reason with which to rationalize that dislike.

Tort Deform
By Molly Ivins, AlterNet. Posted February 15, 2005.
(There is no "flood of frivolous lawsuits" – in fact, tort claims are declining and only 2 percent of injured people ever sue for compensation to begin with.)
Sometimes the ironic timing of events in our public life is so striking as to cause one to wonder if the Great Scriptwriter in the Sky isn't trying to make a point. Thus, the word that the U.S. Senate voted for tort deform last week came just a few days after the news that seven executives of W.R. Grace and Co. were indicted on criminal charges for knowingly exposing their workers and the public to asbestos ore.
Hundreds of miners, their family members and townsfolk in Libby, Mont., have died, and at least 1,200 more are sick from breathing the air polluted by the mine. Since the ore was shipped all over the country and was used as insulation in millions of homes, the total health effects are incalculable. The Seattle Post-Intelligencer deserves credit for bringing Grace to public attention with a series back in 1999.
The executives and the company were indicted on 10 counts of conspiracy, knowing endangerment, obstruction of justice and wire fraud.
W.R. Grace & Co. "categorically denies any criminal wrongdoing," said a spokesman.
The indictments and the P-I's series were based on tens of thousands of internal communications among the top health, marketing and legal managers at Grace about how to conceal the danger of asbestos in both the ore from the Libby mine and the products that were made from it. Their memos include discussion of how to keep investigators from studying the health of the miners, how to keep safety warnings off their products and how to hide the hazards of working with asbestos ore.
A lawyer with a Montana firm that has been trying to help families of the dead and dying for years said: "The prosecution cannot eliminate the death and disease in Libby. But there is comfort in the hope that criminal convictions will say to corporate America: Managers will be held criminally accountable if they lie and watch workers die."
According to an article in the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, W.R. Grace filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in 2001 because of a "sharply increasing number of asbestos claims." However, in 2002, the Justice Department intervened in a bankruptcy proceeding for the first time ever, alleging that before Grace asked for Chapter 11, it concealed money in new companies it bought. The Justice Department said it was a "fraudulent transfer" of money to protect itself from civil suits.
Just before the bankruptcy trial was to begin, Grace returned almost $1 billion to the bankruptcy court. The company currently has annual sales of about $2 billion, more than 6,000 employees and operations in nearly 40 companies.

Tort Deform
By Molly Ivins, AlterNet. Posted February 15, 2005.
...
On Feb. 2, President Bush again referred to "frivolous asbestos claims."
Against this timely reminder of what the tort system is designed to deter or punish, the Senate voted for the "Class Action Fairness Act" (love those cute names they keep giving rotten bills) 72 to 26. There is no "flood of frivolous lawsuits" – in fact, tort claims are declining and only 2 percent of injured people ever sue for compensation to begin with.
Public Citizen did a study showing that corporations themselves file four times as many lawsuits as do individuals, and they are penalized much more often by judges for pursuing frivolous litigation. "Corporations think America is too litigious only when they are on the receiving end of a lawsuit," said Joan Claybrook, president of Public Citizen. "But when they feel aggrieved, businesses are far more likely to take their beef to court than are consumers."
The administration came up with a weird fix for this nonexistent problem (so reminiscent of nonexistent WMDs, the "crisis" in Social Security and other non-problems): It severely limited the right of individuals to file class-action suits against corporations by moving such cases from state courts to federal courts.
If the aggregate claim is over $5 million or the defendants and the plaintiffs are in separate states, the suit goes into the federal system – and that definition pretty well encompasses all class-action suits. And federal judges are less likely to certify a group of aggrieved consumers as "a class" because such cases often involve conflicting state laws – victims of a bad product can live in any state, and the company that made the product is often in another state.
On top of that, in case you haven't talked to any federal judges lately, the whole federal system is under-funded and overburdened now. The net effect is less accountability for corporations that violate health, safety, consumer and civil rights and environmental laws. Happy Enron, WorldCom, Tyco and W.R. Grace to all.
This abominable bill was also much-sought by Republicans for nasty political reasons, which makes their rhetoric about justice all the more nauseating. It's a big win for the insurance industry and for big business, both heavy donors to Republicans. It also strips potential cases from trial lawyers, a group notoriously given to supporting the Democrats. How clever of Karl Rove.
Frankly, I think both the trial lawyers and big business can take care of themselves – it's the rest of us I worry about.

After WGG: There is a problem in the judicial system, but screwing the people who need it is not the answer.
Fix 1. There are persons and persons representing companies and corporations who will commit acts of fraud and misrepresentation regarding products and services. These persons do this out of greed, and are rarely held personally accountable.
Fix 2. There are persons in the legal profession who “play” the system for personal benefit rather than the benefit of their clients. These persons do this out of greed, and are rarely held personally accountable.
Fix 3. There are persons who use the legal system to gain an unfair advantage, and sue or threaten to sue others in order to perpetrate fraud or personal gain. These persons do this out of greed, and are sometimes held personally accountable, being just persons and not corporations.
Fix these things before cutting off access to the discovery of the truth and fairness to all concerned.
And donuts. More people would settle if they gave out donuts in court.

I nodded and murmured something about enlightenment principles and empiricism. He cut me off. ''That's not the way the world really works anymore,'' he continued. ''We're an empire now, and when we act, we create our own reality. And while you're studying that reality -- judiciously, as you will -- we'll act again, creating other new realities, which you can study too, and that's how things will sort out. I think we must remember that even if there were or are WMD's in Iraq, the war was still unjust. If we harp upon this particular governmental failure in truth-finding or truth-telling we will find ourselves we seem to concede a point that is in no way obvious-- that if WMD's were found the war would have been proper. The are countries out there with real WMD's and unless we start making the point that their possession of these weapons is not a sufficient reason for starting to kill, we are going to have no ground on which to argue against the next war.

Chris Cox is also the moron behind the Cox Report, which the GOP wanted to use to push Chinagate (aka "Klintoon and Hitlery have sold us out to the damn squint-eyes!").
Of course, if anyone was guilty of giving America's secrets to the Chinese, it was in fact prominent California Republican fundraiser -- and longtime Chinese spy -- Katrina Leung. But the GOP/Media Axis of Evil didn't dare go after her.

If a president forces the nation into a needless and disastrous war, you would think he'd be held accountable.
If a president causes US debt to explode out of control and then wants to double or triple the already unmanageable debt, you would think they'd be dismissed as fiscally irresponsible.
If a president permits polluters to toxify the environment so they can better profiteer at the expense of the public's health, you would think that this would be a more impeachable offense than getting a blow job in the oval office!
If a president seeks to subvert the press by inserting faux journalists into the WH press corp, you would think this would be a scandal that the media would never tolerate!
And yet, with a few exceptions (Keith Olbermann & Anderson Cooper), there seems to be little interest in Bushboy's latest impropriety.
Alas, fascism is alive and well in America and our vaunted watchdog "free press" has become a capitalist contented lapdog!

I thought I had read McBobo's column before. In fact I had heard it before. To borrow a technique from billmon, here goes:
"They guard it because they have hope. A faint and fading hope that one day it will flower. A King will come,
and this city will be as it once was, before it fell into decay. The old wisdom bourne out of the west was forsaken. Kings made made tombs more splendid than the houses of the living, and counted the old names of their descent dearer than the names of their sons."
- Gandalf, Lord of the Rings: Return of the King
There's going to be a millionaire rising out of the country somewhere and he (or she) is going to lead a movement of people who are worried about federal deficits, who are offended by the horrendous burden seniors are placing on the young and who are disgusted by a legislative process that sometimes suggests that the government has lost all capacity for self-control.
.........
He's going to look at an event like that one, and he's not only going to be worried about the country's economic future - he's also going to be morally offended. He's going to sense that something fundamentally decadent is going on.
.........
The living and well organized are taking money from the weak and the unborn. Over the past decades we have seen a gigantic transfer of wealth from struggling young families and the next generation to members of the AARP.
.........
But what can't last won't last. Before too long, some new sort of leader is going to arise,
.........
It won't be a green-eyeshade economic crusade this leader will be launching. It will be a moral crusade, and it'll be quite a show.
- Mr. McBobo, NYT, Today

Ba'al presents this for your morning coffee.
Ministering to his flock — or fleecing them?
The Rev. Riley's 'gifting' program might be a scam
By ALLAN TURNER
Copyright 2005 Houston Chronicle
Sally Riley was hopping mad at the devil. Speaking in tongues, brandishing a wooden staff to vanquish God's enemies Old Testament-style, the co-pastor of the nondenominational Secret Place International Church reached a crescendo as she warned that sooner or later all good Christians would find themselves assailed by Satan.
Pink slips, cancer, crack cocaine, knuckleheaded kids — the devilish assault would be brutal. But God would prevail, toss the evil one into a fiery lake and reward his children in spades.
From a wing chair on the sidelines, the Rev. Sean Riley exhorted his wife to greater heights, clapping, shouting and swatting the air as if delivering a knockout punch to an unseen adversary.
"These hard times are small potatoes," Sally Riley assured her flock. "We've been surrounded and battered by troubles, but we've not been demoralized."
To some, the midweek service might have seemed unremarkable, a generic, if theatrical, admonition on the rigors of a Christian life. But for the Rileys, captains of the Humble storefront church and an international television ministry, the sermon resonated with meaning.
Riley, 37, a minister's son who strayed into drugs and alcohol before returning to Christ, now faces the biggest challenge of his life.
Earlier this month, authorities charged him with promoting a pyramid scheme to bilk the faithful and others out of thousands of dollars. When agents of the Harris County District Attorney's Office served search warrants at the church, 7211 FM 1960 West, and the couple's Lee Road mobile home in early February, they confiscated more than $8,000 in cash, computers and computer records, and forms linked to Elite Activity, an allegedly illegal "gifting" scheme with national branches.

More and more Texans hate America.
Poll: War support shrinking in Texas
Majority also believes attack on U.S. is likely
By DON JORDAN
Copyright 2005 Houston Chronicle Washington Bureau
WASHINGTON - A shrinking majority of Texans believe the war in Iraq was justified even though the United States has uncovered no weapons of mass destruction it claimed Saddam Hussein had.
Support of the war has dropped from 74 percent in the spring to 56 percent now, according to a quarterly Scripps Research Center poll released today.
Forty percent said the war was not justified and and 4 percent had no opinion, the study found.
"What we're seeing in these questions is that certainly this is not a very ringing endorsement of the war," said Ty Meighan, the poll's director. "Texans are still very concerned about how things are going in Iraq."
The Scripps poll was conducted from Jan. 27-Feb. 14, 2005. It surveyed 1,000 random adult Texans by telephone on issues related to war and terrorism.
In addition, a combined 63 percent of those polled say it is "very likely" or "somewhat likely" that the United States will fall victim to a terrorist attack in the next year.

Until you can provide a solution to what happened to Hussein's WMDs that every Democratic leader believed to exist before the Gulf War, from Clinton to Kennedy, I am not going to believe they never existed. Hussein had a history of shipping his weapons to enemies or burying them deep into the ground. Remember in the first Gulf War, he sent his air force to Iran to keep the planes from being destroyed by allied forces. The rest we dug up during the second gulf war. But it wasn't the real, the honest, the leaves-you-on-your-back-with-all-limbs-twitching COCKROACH WEED...
Last time I smoked any of that was in Hawaii...1981? 82? and there was some jamaican weed around at about the same time that was of the same character...

Here's something to make the trolls happy, and the rest of us not so much, given that we, you know, love the notion of America, the Constitution, and so forth:
LITTLE ROCK, Ark. -- The state House on Friday voted against affirming the separation of church and state in a resolution brought by a legislator who said he was fed up with a religious undertone at the Capitol.
The House voted 44-39 against the proposal. Only two Republicans voted for it, and one of them, Rep. Jim Medley, said he had intended to vote no but didn't get to his machine in time to change his vote.
Democratic Rep. Buddy Blair said he offered the measure because he was tired of conservative colleagues "making every issue into a religious issue."
"It's unbelievable to me. They have just voted against the U.S. Constitution and the constitution of the state of Arkansas," Blair said.
How many other states will now fall into line?

Re: Trools
it has long been a contention of mine that to assign an hitherto meaningful word to the vermin which scuttle around spreading toxic emissions in a virtual universe was to depose and assign upon them a gravitus they neither deserved not warranted.
Now it happened that, perhaps last summer, i was typing the word 'troll', but instead tapped out "trool" instead. And it struck me then as it still does, that the nonsense strong "trool" has advantages: 1) it is a totally unreal word, and is therefore wholly apt to nominate wholly unimagineable assholes...
2) it combines two nicely orthographic and suggestive memes: the dark, ugly stench of the traditional 'troll,' along with a sound which entails the act of 'drooling'.
Hence, may I proffer the suggestion that henceforth, when refering to such odious irruptions we discuss them in terms of 'trools'?
I thank you for your attention...

"When 35 Greenpeace protesters stormed the International Petroleum Exchange (IPE) yesterday they had planned the operation in great detail," reports the Times of London:
What they were not prepared for was the post-prandial aggression of oil traders who kicked and punched them back on to the pavement.
"We bit off more than we could chew. They were just Cockney barrow boy spivs. Total thugs," one protester said, rubbing his bruised skull. "I've never seen anyone less amenable to listening to our point of view."
Another said: "I took on a Texan Swat team at Esso last year and they were angels compared with this lot." Behind him, on the balcony of the pub opposite the IPE, a bleary-eyed trader, pint in hand, yelled: "Sod off, Swampy."
"Greenpeace had hoped to paralyse oil trading at the exchange," the Times notes. It's pretty clear who the thugs are here, and it's not the Cockney barrow boy spivs.

My father in law is a WWII vet (Marine gunnery sergeant, Pacific theater), devout Catholic, and retired toolmaker. That which has made his life better include labor unions, Social Security, Medicare, wage and hour laws, the list he gave me goes on.
Not to mention that he's the kindest man on earth. His devoutness tends to take on the form of taking care of friends and neighbors, housing and loving many cats, donating to charities, and never being too busy to talk. He does not judge.

The war was unjust even if there were WMD's. To even give the impression that the lack of truth telling or truth-finding by the government is the issue regarding the entry into war on this issue, leaves us open to the next war where a regime does have WMD's. "You complained about no WMD's the last time- but you can't this time." Without his gayness and his porn, you don't have a story, that's why bring it up.
Actually, that is false.
But what Gannon was up to was not just writing opinion columns or using a different technique to get information. He was a player in Republican campaigns and his work in the South Dakota Senate race illustrates the role he played. It is also a classic example of how political operatives are using the brave new world of the Internet and the blogosphere. Gannon and Talon News appear to be mini-Drudge reports; a "news" source which partisans use to put out negative information, get the attention of the bloggers, talk radio and then the MSM in a way that mere press releases are unable to achieve.
...it is the more routine part of Gannon's life that deserves serious scrutiny. Planting or even just sanctioning a political operative in the WH press room is a dangerous precedent and Karl Rove's hope to become a respected policymaker will be hampered if the dirty tricks from his political past are more apparent than his desire to spread liberty around the globe.
Karl's been a baaaaaaaad boy.

WoodyGsGuitar,
Re: Trools
When it shows up in the dictionary because it becomes a common place word in daily use, you'll get all the credit.
"Insurgent attacks killed at least 42 people Saturday, including a U.S. soldier, a Ministry of Defense official said, as Shiite Muslim worshippers around the country commemorated their holiest day of the year.
Insurgents carried out a steady stream of attacks using suicide bombers, mortars and gunmen, across the country, said Capt. Sabah Yasin, a defense ministry official. Among the deadliest attacks came when a suicide bomber blew up his car at an Iraqi army checkpoint in Latifiya, 30 kilometers (20 miles) south of the capital, killing nine Iraqi soldiers, he said.
At least eight suicide bombers staged attacks in and around Baghdad alone on Saturday, targeting religious gatherings and Iraqi checkpoints. An Associated Press count of the dead from those attacks alone totaled 24, but many more explosions were audible in the capital throughout the day."

Wingnuts are not ignorant, they’re just stuck mid-revolution. They clearly hate America as passionately as any truck-bomber. They hate the plurality of it, the tolerance, the check-and-balance crap that keeps them from curb-stomping gays and Liberals and “the coloreds” whenever they fucking well feel like it.
They adore the idea of a Strong Man lining up the degenerates and mowing them down. They jizz over their chubby, pink feet at the thought of stadia full of smart-ass “literates” being tasered into loving Jesus, and mass graves filled with dead feminists. To such people, the fact that their leaders are a gang of reckless liars, thugs and whores is a source of Pride.
So when Bush or his minions opens their bibble-spigots and drop another steaming pile of laughably ignorant shit all over the media, instead of being even moderately embarrassed or feeling like hypocrites, they’re thrilled. It's just that they’re still a few fascist Supreme Court nominations away from being able to come right out and murder their critics, so the best they can do for now is run in tiny circles, screaming incoherently at the tops of their lungs.

Jeff Gannon, the former White House reporter whose naked pictures have appeared on a number of gay escort sites, says that he has “regrets” about his past but that White House officials knew nothing about his salacious activities.
“I’ve made mistakes in my past,” he said yesterday. “Does my past mean I can’t have a future? Does it disqualify me from being a journalist?”
Gannon chastised his critics, breaking a silence that began last week when liberal bloggers disclosed his real name, James Dale Guckert, and a Web page, which he paid for, featuring X-rated photos of himself. “Why would they be looking into a person’s sexual history? Is that what we’re going to do to reporters now? Is there some kind of litmus test for reporters? Is it right to hold someone’s sexuality against them?”
As for his critics, Gannon said: “People have said some of my writing expressed a hostile point of view” toward gays. “These people are willing to abandon their principles on the basis of trying to make me out to be a hypocrite. These are the same groups that cherish free speech and privacy.”
It’s difficult for me to express how utterly disgusting you Leftists are. In your frenzy of me-too-ism (look! we can bring down journalists too!), you have completely exposed themselves as the worst sort of hypocrites.

To quote my 86 year old father in law: "Anything that's made my life better, it's because of those on the left."
Absolutely.
If it weren't for the courage of black people, there would be no left.
That's certainly not too strong of a statement. And remember, a lot of these African American civil rights protestors were young kids, juveniles, getting hosed down by the right-wing cops because their parents had to got to work & couldn't protest. A perfect demonstration of the difference between left and right- right wing adults abuse little kids demonstrating their constitution rights to speech and to assemble :
left wing kids put their butts on the line to stand up for what's right.
Well, I just might do that... mainly, I just wanted to see if it compared to that dreamy picture of you!
she looks way better in a dress than i do.
If leftists were into eugenics, we'd get these two kids together to breed a super-race!
i might just have to change my mind about eugenics. doesn't seem so wrong when we hear how the wingers want to eliminate us. mayhaps it's time to breed them out.

"Further proof that the neo-Nazi wing of the Republican Party will lie anytime, anywhere, about anything, without any concern for being caught."
Why should they fear being caught? They are in control of the system. Those who do have the power to rein in their excesses are either encouraging the actions and/or turning a blind eye on their antics, thus letting the blood sport florish.
It's a real pity that a poltical party is encouraging such hatred against Americans. Even worst, the Congress is neutral as well. The Germans are well aware of where such hatred leads.

The unusually partisan phrasing prompted reporters and liberal groups to ask the same question: Who is this guy? Well, it turns out that Gannon is not really Gannon. His real name is James Guckert. It also turns out that a company he owns is the registered owner of several sexually suggestive Web addresses.
Most curious of all, though, is that it turns out he is not really a reporter, at least not if that term still denotes a disinterested observer of events. Rather, Guckert writes for a Web site, talonnews.com, which is linked to another site, GOPUSA.com. That site serves, as you might gather, to promote the Republican Party.
Guckert resigned last week, saying he and his family have been threatened and harassed. If true, that is deplorable.
But it's also deplorable that he was ever seated in the White House briefing room. As to how that happened, Bush spokesman Scott McClellan has pleaded ignorance, saying, "In this day and age, when you have a changing media, it's not an easy issue to decide, to try to pick and choose who is a journalist."
Which is patently ridiculous. Contrary to the press secretary's Hamlet-like agonizing, it's not all that hard to know who is and is not a reporter. If an individual reports for a recognized media outlet that observes customary standards of journalistic integrity -- even if it tends to view the world through a conservative or liberal editorial prism -- that person is a reporter. But if the person works for an outlet that simply promotes, or advocates for, one political party or another, then the line between reporter and shill has been well and truly crossed.
It's not brain surgery. So you'll have to forgive me for not extending the benefit of doubt to McClellan. My problem is that he speaks for an administration with a long record of manipulating truth. These are the folks who pay pundits to say nice things about them. The ones who pressure scientists to change science that conflicts with political goals. The ones who ignore their own experts when confronted with information they'd rather not believe. And this is a president whose news conferences occur with only slightly more frequency than ice storms do in Key West.
So planting a party stooge among the real reporters hardly seems out of character.
The thing is, a government that is not scrutinized by an energetic and adversarial press is a government that is not accountable for its actions. A government that is allowed to create its own reality is a government that can get away with anything.
So where is our outrage?
Frankly, the only thing more galling than the brazenness with which the White House abrogates the public's right to know is the sheep-like docility with which we accept it.
When the history of this era is written, people will wonder why we didn't challenge its excesses, why we didn't know the things we

That poster of Uncle W is just so wierd (at the Salon link)
I want to try to describe the feelings I get. It seems to say so much about where the wingers' heads are.
1. The whole "muscle-man, I'm gonna kick all yore asses" kind of attitude.
2. The inclusion of Bush's face is creepy, creepy creepy. "America is Bush (Classic royalty mentality)"
Plus, the indication that George W Bush is any kind of tuff-guy-macho-dude and like that's even important.
I don't know whether to puke or have a sick laugh, or maybe even cry, when I imagine that there are people in this country who identify with a poster like this.
They ARE going to start killing us, you know. Do we realize this? Do we not see the kristallnacht frenzy gathering before our eyes?
The next Cheneyco-sponsored terrist attack perps will have "extensively used the internet." (Hell, I can write CNN's news copy right now myself.) Emergency supplemental Patriot Act will immediately shut down all speech like this here.

does watertiger know she's being bandied about like this?
"I just don't understand how so many people happily perform valet service for a Republican party"
Che proved it and the repubs are seeing it thru...gurella warfare.
Che developed the idea of small cells of individuals with the sole purpose of attacking the establishment. Each cell acts on their own without any guidance from the top. That way if caught, they can't be tied to the leadership; they're working independently. The only guiding principle is to attack the establishment anyway possible, to the best ability of the cell, using their own ingenuity, imagination, and their own finances.
Satisfaction comes from being able to thwart the establishment and get away to attack it again without penality.
The cells are doing the dirty work and the Admin and Party can safely stay above the fray and not get their hands dirty.
But just for clarity (of concept, not artery): just the fry bread? or a whole Navajo taco swimmin in mutton fat? Or their more delicate cousin, the sopapilla? Stuffed?

Well, ummmmm okay....
But actually i think it's "Ignorance was comfortable...(for a time)".
Ward Churchill's 'sin' is to pin some guilt on the all-too willing corporate accomplices profiting from the world-wide regime of murder, theft, and grand exploitation in the name of US 'progress' and cultural hegemony. He takes literally (as she MEANT it) Hanna Arendt's maxim about the banality of evil: all the good fathers and brothers and mothers--the 'eichmanns'--doing technically 'good work' for evil purposes and ends...
and when we can blithely pass over the innocent dead slaughtered wholesale and willy-nilly in Iraq --whose fate is dismissed or glosssed as 'collateral damage'-- and we nod sagely and accept this murder as a necessary part of our agenda, how do we suspect that we should escape for ever the retribution so evidently deserved?
Sharkbabe said upthread that 'they' are gonna start trying to kill us. It is true, and it will start in the aftermath of the next, horrible (inevitable) 'terror attack.' Arm yourselves...protect your own...

Here's what happens when you Leftists get into fights with rightwingers:
“They grabbed us and started kicking and punching. Then when we were on the floor they tried to push huge filing cabinets on top of us to crush us.”
Ann Coulter (and need we remind you that the French refer to her as le skank) foams on about Ward Churchill:
"Even liberals don't try to defend Churchill on grounds that he is Galileo pursuing an abstract search for the truth. They simply invoke "free speech," like a deus ex machina to end all discussion. Like the words "diverse" and "tolerance," "free speech" means nothing but: "Shut up, we win." It's free speech (for liberals), diversity (of liberals), and tolerance (toward liberals)."
And ,because, Ann Coulter isn't a liberal, she can't say things like:
* "My only regret with Timothy McVeigh is he did not go to the New York Times Building."
* "When contemplating college liberals, you really regret once again that John Walker is not getting the death penalty. We need to execute people like John Walker in order to physically intimidate liberals, by making them realize that they can be killed, too. Otherwise, they will turn out to be outright traitors."
* "Whether they are defending the Soviet Union or bleating for Saddam Hussein, liberals are always against America. They are either traitors or idiots, and on the matter of America's self-preservation, the difference is irrelevant."
...and find work on MSNBC, Fox, Human Events, etc.

The best way to get Syria to withdraw from Lebanon in compliance with UN Resolution 1559 of 2 September 2004 is to begin negotiations with Israel on a withdraw from the Golan Heights. But Washington has imposed sanctions on Damascus and allows doubt to swirl around its intentions concerning the régime of Bashir al-Assad. Surely it knows that if al Assad is toppled, chaos will ensue.

"What makes you think you should lie to these people? Is it that you're out of your district and you figure these heartland types are just stupid? Is it the old 'They've drank the Kool-Aid' denial thing?

In the meantime, I will definitely be writing Cox. It's almost too bad I'm not in his district, 'cause I'm goona jump knee-deep into his shit, and it might count more if he had to worry about my vote, or my activism in his district.
How is what Chris Cox did any different from what Eason Jordan did?
Mr. Jordan is a private citizen who immediately retracted his statement, knowing it was wrong. Mr. Cox is a public servant and must be held to a higher standard.
Mr. Cox should resign at once and apologize to the American people.

John Gorenfeld - I kind of go by the rule that whatever they are saying about the Left means that it's what is happening on the Right. Thus, all this blather about the Left splintering (huh? I thought we might right after the 2d, but if anything, we've gotten tighter than before) is just because the Right is coming apart at the seams.
The fundies are making the rest of the Right crazy like I knew they would. It was just a matter of time, and it didn't take long at all.
They are all like maddened dogs who chase their tales until they catch them and punish them for being on their asses all the time. Bite, chew, bleed and wonder why they are in pain.

I don't know whether to LOL like Woody Woodpecker or shake my head in grouchy disbelief like Staedler and Waldorf.
All right, so there are a quotient of blame-America-firsters, but they're not the only ones to have suspected that there were few or no WMDs to be found in Iraq, or that in some way both W and Saddam were playing silly buggers with the rest of the world.

Tena - I make fun of it, but if you take everything that the right says to be the opposite of what they're saying then their actions and their "words" start to correlate. I and a good number of otherwise sane and often relatively non-political friends were really thrown by this disconnect starting with the first Bush II reign.
As a corrolary, if they're blaming anything on the "left" you can make a sure bet that it's exactly part of their own plan of action.
Very confusing - again, part of the plan. I'd consider myself a paranoid delusional if it weren't testable and verifiable.

jimmyraybob - well, you've been around here long enough to test the hypothesis, as have I. It's so true that it's rather scary, really.
And just to repeat what I said upstairs - if y'all want to know what really has the trools upset, it is not that they are worried about Bush being JimmyDaleJeff's "bottom." It's because JimmyDaleJeff is the link from the WH to the freepers in Rathergate.
He worked for the WH and frequented freeper blogs. Did y'all really imagine that the freeps came up with the whole: "the docs are forged, look at the kerning" on their own?
They are scared shitless because Rathergate is about to blow open.
I'd bet my last dollar on it.

Tena, that's a good reminder ... not all Republicans are going ape at CPAC, and the embarrassment that is Iraq (no matter what Cox says), the dismissal of Hefley from Ethics because he wouldn't protect DeLay, and the more-lukewarm-than-expected response to Bush's Social Security plan suggests that these nutjobs are alienating the more reasonable in the GOP. (Granted, there are few of them, but we leftists can prey on any signs of dissent, just as the right did to us.)

Apparently some have swung by my TB'd post and have suggested I somehow missed the point, or was spoiling for a fight. That is not the case. I merely picked up on one portion of the post, making the point that the democratic party is indeed suffering shock and awe, if not worse. I said nothing about WMD, which as far as I know, while some little bits of this and that were found, the Bush administration long ago acknowledged problems with the intelligence gathering conducted under the very same CIA head which served clinton.
That is all. Thank you.

I wrote Mr. Cox a letter, suggesting that he was in receipt of information regarding WMD's that apparently the President of the United States was unaware of, it was incumbent upon him to immediately call hearings to investigate yet another catastrophic failure of American intelligence.
Tena:
I'll respectfully disagree with you about JimmyJeffTopper. To most of the 'Murican sheeple Rathergate/TANG is yesterday's news. They were able to turn it around on CBS and Rather long enough to get Chimpy thru the election - and that's all that matters.
What they're worried about is the impact on the base - and GOTV efforts in '06 - when its discovered that someone senior at the WH (Unka Karl?) has been enjoying JimmyJ's favors and has to be sacrificed.

Re: So-Called 'Blame-America-First (BAF)'
what kinda jingoistic, crap is that?
I started noticing (like, paying attention) sometime around 1965, when i was in the service and seeing the discrapancies (stet) between what I was seeing cross my desk (USAF Intel) and what was reported daily in the press.
The USA has engaged in countless examples of State Terrorism, since the founding. Check it OUT.
"U.S. State Department Policy Planning Study #23, 1948:
“Our real task in the coming period is to devise a pattern of relationships which will permit us to maintain this position of disparity [U.S. military-economic supremacy]... To do so, we will have to dispense with all sentimentality and day-dreaming... We should cease to talk about vague and...unreal objectives such as human rights, the raising of the living standards, and democratization. The day is not far off when we are going to have to deal in straight power concepts. The less we are then hampered by idealistic slogans, the better.”

There is a way to fix social security, but Bush only gets a portion of the problem into his head.
BY THE WAY, FUCK BUSH.
There is a way to help social security, and help the economy at the same time but because it does NOT put more money in the hands of The Shrubs rich people and the corporation, he is too ignorant to see it.
Leave the tax rate on contributions as it is, but raise the cap to $120,000.
In a typical small company of 25-50 people, how many are in that wage range? Maybe 2.
Now, go the other way. Lower the wage cap tax rate from a total 12.4% to a flat 10% and since we RAISED the cap to $120,000 from $90,000 lets lower it $30,000 to a figure of $60,000. Anyone making LESS than that figure would cap out at 10%, and be taxed no more once they reach the $60,000 threshold.
How many people in a small company make $60 thousand a year or less. Most of them. They would get, what could be considered, a tax break. This would give the employer more money in the company treasury to make improvements, add more machinery, maybe even hire more people.
This system would work folks, and help the economy at the same time it helps the social security problem.

Sharkbabe said upthread that 'they' are gonna start trying to kill us. It is true, and it will start in the aftermath of the next, horrible (inevitable) 'terror attack.'
It started after 9/11. Funny how the anthrax attacks were mailed only to 'librul' (in the reich-wing imagination) media figures and Dem legislators. Curiously, these were Dem legislators with little or no international or foreign-policy profile that might attract attention from Al Qaeda, but were bugbears of the domestic far-right.
Despite the use of weapons-grade anthrax, to which only a few hundred people in the country had access, Ashkkkroft's FBI just couldn't track down the culprit.
And if I remember rightly, at least some of these envelopes-of-death were mailed days BEFORE 9/11, which is either an incredible coincidence of timing (much like the 30x spike in short-sales of AMR and UAL) or implies foreknowledge of that attack, to exploit the chaos and hysteria in its wake.
Solve the mystery of who was behind the anthrax mailings and you will crack open a lot of other nagging questions about 9/11 and this mendacious, criminal maladministration.
