Prior to the election I wrote a propaganda piece about how Karl Rove would spin the story if President Bush were caught having homosexual relations in the White House. In light of the past weeks revelations, it might be appropriate to post this story somewhere. I am wondering if I should post the story and if so, where should I post it.

What I noticed was (here's the weird part) how gangsta rappers remind me of current conservatives. Bear with me---
--the similarities: They're both violent, mysoginistic, and gay-hating, they have both co-opted and destroyed the reputation of a valid form of expression (in one case, old-school conservatism, in the other, old-school rap), and in both cases, the majority of them are macho frauds and pussies (or maybe even on the "down low"), desperately trying to get people to believe what badasses they are.
What a waste of good weed. Or maybe it wasn't good weed. Maybe he didn't inhale. There's no way he had a good hit and turned out to be as big a prick as he is. The coke and booze fit his persona, but certainly not weed.

I'm on a literacy board that oversees a one-on-one after-school tutoring program for 1st-2nd graders. Most are out of the Chapter 1 program. Our director and parent coordinator think this year is the worst since our program started almost 15 years ago. The children are very needy; but not just poor needy, but also starved for attention.
Is this just occuring in our area or is this a larger problem? By the way, all our tutors are volunteers from the community and a good mix of male/female, ranging from highschoolers to one in her 80's.

I never know what to make of Ice-T and his offspring. He's obviously a pretty good self-promoter, as he was able to go from having the cops officially revile his ass over "Cop Killer", to playing one on L & O.
As for my comment: One reason this occurs to me is the airy, self-important attitude of my former asshole boss, who dismissed rap without having the slightest knowledge about it. Some of these guys strike me as jerks, but I've never had a hardon for that music genre. Things are always more complicated than some people make them out to be.

Granted, pot doesn't work for everyone...or, frankly, most people. Way too many potheads I know use it to shut their minds down rather than open them up.
yeah, I think pot can be a real positive thing, but it's wrapped up in a negative aspect of the culture- because it;s persecuted- so that if you're smoking pot, there's a fair chance that your total lifestyle, on balance, is not very proactive or positive, so as a result your pot-use, as well, turns into just another thing that's mucky in your life instead of something that's appreciated, not overdone, and something that you try to make the absolute most out of.
I think I'd go so far as to say that you're missing out if you've never been stoned; but doing it too often gets to be a drag.
Having said all that, I'll just add I haven't smoked in maybe 6 years!
But it's important for the left to stick up for marijuana more, I think. Marijuana needs to be completely removed from any culture of violence and it's a shame that anyone should have to go to jail for marijuana possession. Legalization is the answer. I think criminalization is an aspect of social control.

Swan,
I don't know how deep one can get into the "lifestyle" - whatever that means - before it "takes over" one's life...whatever that means. I know plenty of cats who smokes shit-tons of pot and nevertheless manage to get up for work, take care of their families and do a whole lot more than just sit around smoking pot. They just do it stoned. Then again, I know plenty of folks who all they do is get as seriously fucked up as possible as often as possible. Generally, though, these are the same folks who get fucked up on cough medicine and horse tranquilizers. Rarely do the two mix, unless one's buying from the other.
I wonderful if the main thing drugs do, if you really get into them, is expose just how much bullshit modern life really is. All the trappings - money, power, prestige - none of it really matters. The first group, I like to think, accepts the revelation and then goes out and enjoys life. The latter try to fuck themselves up to shut life out. And then there's people still caught up in the Game but have no idea why they're so fuckin' miserable.
And pot is illegal, lest we forget, while booze and cigarettes are not only legal to buy but almost encouraged. Then there's the multitude of fix-it pills like Zoloft and Viagra and Prozac, guaranteed cure-alls for every little problem in your life, dammit, believe us!
I often wonder if the government's not so much pissed about people taking drugs and more upset about who's getting the money for it. I can grow weed in my closet if I so chose to, and the government - despite what it claims - doesn't care for folks enjoying life without properly paying for the privilage.
That's why I hope that even if pot is legalized, the fuckin' corporate-toady government stays out of it. They fuck everything else up.

The Dutch logic of legalization was not hedonism or tolerance or any of the silly frilly non-reasons our airheaded tabloid media salon is so ready with. They said, "Look, it's all very well and good for the US to play cowboy like they always have, but be serious for a moment. The 'drug war' is a joke, it's like the high priest revealing that God wants money to go to the high priest, it accomplishes nothing good and is very expensive without any kind of profit. We simply cannot afford this tomfoolery any more than we can afford the tomfoolery of the arms race or star wars or the more expensive nonsense of lacking civilized socialized medicine." If we were serious about drugs, we would
-"cut off Al Capone's legs" so to speak with legalization
-end the nasty deaths celebrated in the commercials by regulating product (no more rat poison sold as ecstacy)
-treat addicts like people suffering a disease and not criminals who can magically make themselves better at any time (but choose to endure out of ungodly pride)

Re: Recreational Uses of Cannabis
Marijuana use is stigmatized, reprobated, and sanctioned for one reason and one reason alone: when under the influence of its wondrous chemical actifacients, it is invariably possible for the user to detect the effort to suppress any truth in the discourse of someone not under that benign and benificent influence.
Mostly, stoned people just laugh at liars. Unless they persist, thinkin' they're pulling one over on us. Then the jollity can acquire an edge, so to speak...

Ba'al proposes a quantitative measure of Democratic effectiveness. It is the number of words devoted by Bob Novak to his diseaased ravings to the effect that Democrats should capitulate completely and start to act like Republicans. The higher that number, the higher the Democrati effectiveness.

The deficit is not an accident, the deficit is the point. You know this whole thing about Bush smoking pot and snorting coke in the 70s reminds me of the old the Penthouse Forum letters I devoured when I was a kid. About half of them seemed to start with some sort of wild, partying substance abuse scene which ultimately led to a little nooky-nooky. Now the kicker here for me is that a certain portion of those drug oriented letters also had elements of male experimentation with bisexuality, which Penthouse seemed to be pushing as a minor editorial priority at the time. Given this whole Gannon thing, along with chronic White House pathological homophobia, along with that picture of Bush shaking hands with a gay porn star that was floating around the internet a couple of years ago...well, I sure would loooove to see some sort of coke addled bisexual skeleton in bell-bottoms fall out of an Oval Office closet sometime.
Now, that would be something to send into Penthouse!

kei & yuri,
That's all very nice and logical, but the U.S. government and it's various corporate subsidiaries stand to still make a shit-ton of money on the "drug war" while at the same time filling folks up with the fix-it pills to take care of their poopy moods, flagging boners and bald spots. A whole lot of folks got a whole lot of money invested in the Grand Illusion and you threaten that money, they'll slit your fucking throat...while claiming to do it "for the children".
Anyone remember a certain anonymous troll who came in late one night and went totally apeshit about pot smokers? He said, basically, my philosophy of life was "live high or die", yet never answered why he was fighting to illegalize alcohol or cigarettes. The government pretends to care for you, but you can buy shotguns and bullets at Wal-Mart at four in the morning and a carton of Marlboro Lights. The government doesn't give a shit about you. Demonizing pot is just another way to keep folks stirred up and preventing them from realizing that.

Yes but our point was a larger one that sort of crowns that like wispy clouds: among the gambits run by the government are the drug racket, the public interest (which actually turns out to be the corporate interest, yeah, sorry about that, now about moving your house so we can build a new office, yeah, we're going to need you to...) racket--and the permanent war economy racket, the last of which is bigger than any of the others, is the driving force behind and at once the main tool of the others.

I like Ice Cube. He's sharp and he seems really genuine. I heard him interviewed and I really liked what he said.
Tena, go check out the lyrics to "Givin' up the nappy dugout" and get back to us on that one.

We are currently working on a new pot that keeps people paranoid.
They smoke the weed, they get all giggly and horny, but there's a nagging doubt planted in the weed.
They will need a strong leader in a designer outfit to keep them secure.

Yeah, I'll definately give you that. There's always money to be made from killin' people. Who or why you kill is basically irrelevant, as long as there's a buck to be made. And if 20 years down the line, the children of the survivors are pissed off enough to be a bother...great! Might just be the last field of bidness in America that's got any sort of stability.

Yes, Dutch prostitutes carry a health card and have to be checked every so many days for diseases. They also have clean needle programs. They have made some effort to slow down the renting of apts for hydroponic growing after pressure from other EU countries (appears to be mostly for show). 60 minutes or one of those shows had an excellent expose on all the hydroponic growing a couple years ago. One apt could yield something like a million dollars or so of high grade hydroponic pot a year.

"I tink it's really valid cultural criticism- and not only that 'conscious' crapola from the likes of Common or Kanye West"
I just don't 'get' rap, despite liking almost all other forms of music and also liking The Last Poets.
It could be a generational thing...just like my parents didn't even know how to approach the stuff I listened to and liked back in the 60's-70's.

Ok couldn't resist. one of my favorite stories is how my grandmother (brought up on a Canadian farm) would slave away cooking dinner and one time she grew tired of waiting for the perfunctory "oh how delicious" and finally asked how it was. apparently Gramps was really tired that evening
and sarcastically replied, "Well I'm eatin ain't I?".

in looking at music threads in the lefty blogosphere, there seems to be a dislike of rap. I tink it's really valid cultural criticism- and not only that 'conscious' crapola from the likes of Common or Kanye West. Stuff like NWA, early Ice Cube, even to the more current stuff........

Tarzan,
My mom was like that. She told me a few years back that it sort of hurt her feelings my dad, my brother and I never lavished praise on her cooking after every meal. Momma's a damn fine cook, and we told her and other people that a bunch, but it was the timing, aparently.
I told her, "Momma. How many times did you have leftovers? How many times did you have to replace dinner plates because ate so hard, the ones we were using went skidding off the table?" Appreciate was expressed by food being slap gone at the end of suppertime, but there is timing to consider.

Pharoah Monch in "Rape" (track 4, internal affairs) uses rape as a metaphor for his forceful conquest and steady control of the medium of rap. Elsewhere in the same song he uses theft as a simile for manipulating a jury, and of course everyone uses murder as a hyperbole for great success (it killed, it slew them).
This is how we know rap is art (orature, to use Asanti's term, as opposed to literature): parts you get, parts you see genius in, and then you come against something that, like a God who twiddles his thumbs during the Holocaust, might be intellectually "explained" by some Philosophy prof but which you can never accept as anything but worthlessly deliberately obscene.

"In Secretly Taped Conversations, Glimpses of the Future President"
By DAVID D. KIRKPATRICK
Click homepage for link...
WASHINGTON, Feb. 19 - As George W. Bush was first moving onto the national political stage, he often turned for advice to an old friend who secretly taped some of their private conversations, creating a rare record of the future president as a politician and a personality. In the last several weeks, that friend, Doug Wead, an author and former aide to Mr. Bush's father, disclosed the tapes' existence to a reporter and played about a dozen of them. Variously earnest, confident or prickly in those conversations, Mr. Bush weighs the political risks and benefits of his religious faith, discusses campaign strategy and comments on rivals...."
Covered in the first ten postings in this thread, and hilarious commentary on it throughout. Homepage has kos article.
People are suggesting this is a distraction tactic.

Attacks on Shiites -- well, are efforts to sow sectarian strife.
noni
How do you know that? Because CNN told you? Did you ask the "terra-ists" why they were bombing Shiites?
The US is "required" to maintain military occupation of Iraq until security and stability is established. (even though out of the other side of the Bushevik two-faced lyin' mouths comes the argument that since Syria cannot provide stability in Lebanon after 1 car bomb that Syria should end the military occupation of Lebanon and the Syrian-backed government should quit.)
And I'm deeply puzzled why these Iraqi "terra-ists" are kidnapping journalists, when every insurgent manual in the world tells of trying to curry favour with journalists to win the propaganda war.

Hecate was right--Junior's pot daze do not matter to the people of the lamb. That a Kerry did pot does matter to them because Kerry does not offer himself up on the altar of fundie forgiveness. It is all about how one absolves sin and for many in Americur, few Dems could ever and I mean EV-ER meet their standards. Trying to run-down Dumbya for pot is a dead-end. A gay ho' might be another matter... But even then, the fundies will just absolve Bush of the sin of ignorance and they will not suspect a thing and defend him all the more.

Backslider, depression is much more than poopy moods. It is a black cloud that takes over your life. It is a disease, and if a biochemical corrective can help you face the normal ups and downs of life, so be it.
Now as for GWB, maybe it wasn't the pot he was smoking. Maybe somebody laced that pot with something very powerful that still hasn't worn off.

John Kerry is a devout Catholic who takes a Bible and a rosary with him on his travels, and he may well have confessed his pot smoking to a priest. But it's all for nought, in the mind of a true Bush believer, because true repentance would have made him a rt-winger.
